Latest / Vigilante Vibes Podcast / Ep. 229. Who is Typhoid Mary in Marvel Comics?!
Transcript
- 0:10Hello Marvel fans, comic geeks, and all nerds in between.
- 0:12My name is Megan with vigilante vibes, and today I'm here to
- 0:15talk about another character. And her name has been thrown
- 0:18around a lot recently due to the speculation of Sadie Sync
- 0:21possibly playing her in Spider Man Brand New Day.
- 0:23Let me be very clear, as much as I would love that Mary's already
- 0:27been done in Iron Fist. Now if Marvel decides to pretend
- 0:32that didn't happen, which I highly doubt, then Typhoid Mary
- 0:36would make a lot of sense given what we've seen in the Spider
- 0:38Man trailer. So what better time is there to
- 0:41discuss Typhoid Mary than now? She first showed up in daredevil
- 0:46#254 in January of 1988 and was created by Ann Nosenti and John
- 0:52Romita Junior. Mary Walker's life started off
- 0:55pretty horrendously. She was born into a really
- 0:58unstable home, with her parents constantly fighting even before
- 1:01she was born. After she came into the world,
- 1:03things got so much worse. Her father began abusing her
- 1:07while she was still an infant. One night when he came into her
- 1:10room again, something and Mary snapped.
- 1:12She mentally retreated deep inside of herself and a
- 1:15secondary personality emerged that violently attacked him,
- 1:19rightfully so. After that, her father never
- 1:22touched her again. So in a twisted, really twisted
- 1:25way, that alter ego became her protection.
- 1:28Over time, that need to protect herself 'cause this second
- 1:32personality to develop powers. Subtle mind control, telekinesis
- 1:36and even pyrokinesis. These abilities were actually
- 1:40mutant in nature, and they first showed up when Mary found a dead
- 1:44pigeon and accidentally burned it and then brought it to life.
- 1:48The fires at home she unintentionally started around
- 1:51the house only made the hostile environment even worse.
- 1:55Around this time, she also developed a very intense
- 1:58attachment to Catholic imagery. Because of her unusual mental
- 2:03state, Mary became a subject of interest for researchers and
- 2:06spent most of her life in institutions.
- 2:09Her main personality? Mary.
- 2:11Who's Mary Walker was gentle and cooperative, but also physically
- 2:16weak, sickly, and prone to seizures.
- 2:19She had no idea her other personality even existed.
- 2:23But that second personality, though?
- 2:26That second identity was a whole problem.
- 2:28It was the complete opposite of Mary Walker.
- 2:31Violent, unstable, and constantly feverish.
- 2:35It became known as Typhoid Mary. While institutionalized, that
- 2:39alter ego was mostly focused on developing her psychic powers.
- 2:44Unfortunately, Mary's condition made her an easy target.
- 2:48A group of researchers got hold of her and subjected her to
- 2:51intense psychic brainwashing as part of a Weapon Plus program
- 2:54called Project Psyche, trying to turn people like her and do
- 2:58sleeper agents. At one point, while she was in a
- 3:02psychiatric hospital, she met Elektra, who helped her escape.
- 3:06So Elektra's a girl's girl. After getting out, Mary actually
- 3:10managed to build a pretty normal life for a while and became a
- 3:14very successful stage actress. But she disappeared again, not
- 3:18surprisingly, likely because of her other personality.
- 3:21Eventually, she ended up working in a brothel.
- 3:24That's where she first met Matt Murdock, before he even became
- 3:27Daredevil. He showed up to attack someone
- 3:30there and things went very sideways.
- 3:32And during the chaos, he accidentally knocked Mary out of
- 3:34a window. That moment stuck with her.
- 3:37She swore she'd never let a man hurt her again.
- 3:39And from then on, Typhoid Mary really took over.
- 3:43And to put it in perspective, that moment also stuck with
- 3:46Daredevil as well. Matt was haunted by her falling
- 3:51out of the window, and it shows in his comics.
- 3:56Later in Chicago, she built a reputation as a criminal,
- 3:59getting into robbery and blackmail before moving to New
- 4:02York City, where she became both a vigilante and a murderer.
- 4:06That caught the attention of Wilson Fisk, the Kingpin.
- 4:09Impressed by her abilities, he hired her to emotionally destroy
- 4:13his enemy Daredevil. That Daredevil lives in
- 4:18Kingpin's head rent free and I find it hilarious.
- 4:23She approached Matt Murdock in his civilian life, pretending to
- 4:26be kind and trustworthy, even making up a story about caring
- 4:29for her blind father who was not blind and wasn't cared for by
- 4:35Mary because he was a piece of garbage.
- 4:38She quickly gained his trust and got close to him, even helping a
- 4:41blind child recover to strengthen that bond.
- 4:44Before long, she had Matt completely focused on her,
- 4:48pulling him away from Karen Page, which Mary loved.
- 4:53At that time, she was secretly attacking him as Typhoid Mary,
- 4:57keeping him confused and off balance.
- 4:59Ironically, her Mary side started to genuinely fall for
- 5:03him. She kept working for the
- 5:06Kingpin, manipulating people and carrying out his plans, but her
- 5:10mental state kept getting worse. Eventually, her personalities
- 5:14clashed hard enough that she broke down mid fight with
- 5:17Daredevil and she had to flee. Realizing her softer side was
- 5:22becoming a problem, Typhoid Mary recruited a group of assassins
- 5:25to help her take Daredevil down. They brutally attacked him and
- 5:29she ultimately tried to kill him by throwing him off a bridge.
- 5:33That act caused even more fallout, especially with
- 5:36Kingpin. Kingpin was actually infuriated
- 5:39that Mary tried to off Daredevil and that pushed Mary to finally
- 5:44realize she had multiple personalities, which caused Mary
- 5:47to become suicidal. When she later found Daredevil
- 5:51alive, she actually saved him and got him to a hospital while
- 5:55also revealing the truth to Karen Page, but not in a
- 5:58friendly way. She was absolutely tormenting
- 6:01Karen Page, which is, you know, it happens to the best of us,
- 6:05you know. Things escalated even further
- 6:09when she teamed up with a demon, Mephisto, during a chaotic
- 6:12crisis in the city, trying to exert her control over the
- 6:16Kingpin and fight Daredevil before disappearing again, as
- 6:19she tends to do. From there, her life kept
- 6:24spiraling. Mary worked for different
- 6:26villains, manipulated heroes, went through more experiments,
- 6:30and kept switching between identities.
- 6:33She crossed paths with people like Wolverine, Ghost Rider,
- 6:36Spider Man, and the X-Men, sometimes as an ally, but a lot
- 6:40of the times as a threat. At one point, Typhoid Mary even
- 6:43developed a third personality, Bloody Mary, which was even more
- 6:48violent and targeted abusive men specifically.
- 6:52There were moments where she tried to get better, using
- 6:54medication, joining communities, even attempting to live a normal
- 6:58life, but something would always push her back.
- 7:01She was repeatedly captured, experimented on, or manipulated
- 7:04by powerful figures like the Kingpin, government programs, or
- 7:08other villains. She even teamed up with Deadpool
- 7:10at one point, who had actually tried to rehabilitate her, but
- 7:15gave up helping her when Mary used manipulation on Deadpool
- 7:18himself. Do you know how wildly unhinged
- 7:21you have to be that Deadpool tries to calm you down?
- 7:26That, that should tell you a lot.
- 7:29Eventually, after a lot of chaos, she managed to integrate
- 7:33her personalities more fully for a time, and even worked
- 7:36alongside Daredevil when he took over the Hand so he could put a
- 7:40stop to their violence. She later reunited with the
- 7:43Kingpin and their relationship evolved in a surprisingly
- 7:47emotional way. Over time, they grew close
- 7:50enough that he proposed to her and she accepted.
- 7:53Mary Walker became his wife, effectively the First Lady of
- 7:57New York, during his time as mayor.
- 7:59Even then, things were not stable.
- 8:02There were invasions, betrayals, and even more battles.
- 8:07At one point, she bonded with a symbiote, further fracturing her
- 8:11mind. Still, she and Fisk remained
- 8:13connected and even escaping together after his fall from
- 8:16power. Later, as a mutant, Mary claimed
- 8:19citizenship in Krakowa and lived there with Fisk during a major
- 8:24mutant crisis, which was the 3rd Hellfire Gala if you guys know,
- 8:29and they were separated. Mary ended up in another realm
- 8:32called Vanaheim alongside a few other mutants including Marrow
- 8:36Magic, Mirage and Dust, and even as Guardian allies, before
- 8:40eventually making her way back. Most recently, we saw Typhoid
- 8:45Mary in the new Alias comic, which was released on the 25th
- 8:50anniversary of Jessica Jones, and now she's teaming up with
- 8:53Jessica, but I'm awaiting the second issue, so I have no idea
- 8:56what's going to happen next. And I'm very, very interested to
- 8:59find out. She's still very much with
- 9:01Wilson Fisk. She's still very much unhinged,
- 9:04and we love her for it. In the end, despite everything.
- 9:08Abuse, experimentation, fractured identities, a long
- 9:12history of violence. Mary Walker AKA Typhoid Mary AKA
- 9:16Bloody Mary AKA at one point Mutant 0 remains A deeply
- 9:21complicated figure, constantly caught between her different
- 9:24selves, her past trauma, and her attempts to find some kind of
- 9:28control or peace. So that is Mary Walker, that is
- 9:33Typhoid Mary. I am very interested to see if
- 9:36Sadie Sync is actually playing her because we got to be honest
- 9:39guys, she'd we she can't play Jean Grey.
- 9:43You just it. It makes no sense to me and I, I
- 9:48don't get it. So yeah, that's Typhoid Mary.
- 9:51I hope you enjoyed this episode. I hope you learned something and
- 9:54I hope you will like and subscribe.
- 9:55So with that being said, have a marvelous day.
