- 0:00Speaker 1: For the first time we saw what the Eagles of
- 0:05Speaker 1: fast observations from Andrew to Checko, who's covering the birds
- 0:10Speaker 1: for Inside the Birds, and he joins us now with
- 0:13Speaker 1: a look at the Eagles OTAs. Now, how's it feel
- 0:15Speaker 1: to see the team back on the field there, Andrew,
- 0:18Speaker 1: after months of just conversation, to actually see the helmets
- 0:22Speaker 1: and the guys out there.
- 0:25Speaker 2: It feels like always right in the sports world.
- 0:28Speaker 1: I love it, all right, So give us a little
- 0:32Speaker 1: observation on the offense of what we saw. You've been
- 0:36Speaker 1: around this team in the last couple of years, I
- 0:38Speaker 1: mean everybody's Is it noticeably different? What did you see
- 0:41Speaker 1: from the offense that everybody wants to know about the
- 0:44Speaker 1: changes that they're making.
- 0:47Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, look, it's always important to note that
- 0:51Speaker 2: OTAs are a portion of the offseason where you're doing
- 0:55Speaker 2: some mixing and matching. You're installing, in this case, a
- 0:57Speaker 2: new offense, so you never want to read too much
- 1:00Speaker 2: to it. But there were plenty of observations to go
- 1:03Speaker 2: off of, and I don't know where to start. I
- 1:05Speaker 2: guess we'll start with the rookie third round pick MARKL
- 1:08Speaker 2: Bell starting at right tackle in place of Lane Johnson,
- 1:11Speaker 2: who wasn't there on Wednesday, And I thought for Jalen Hurts,
- 1:15Speaker 2: there was a lot of under center looks, a considerable amount,
- 1:17Speaker 2: I would say, And it makes sense, Mike to do
- 1:19Speaker 2: it right now, because the last thing you want to
- 1:22Speaker 2: do is kind of shoehorn it in and during training
- 1:25Speaker 2: camp you want to build this thing from the ground up.
- 1:27Speaker 2: And a majority of his reps were under center. He
- 1:30Speaker 2: was making quick decisions getting the football out. Saquon Barkley
- 1:34Speaker 2: was active as a receiver. Makai Lemon had a couple
- 1:36Speaker 2: of receptions, had to drop on a crosser that he
- 1:39Speaker 2: was open on, but it's all part of the process.
- 1:42Speaker 2: And then defensively, I saw some interesting things in terms
- 1:46Speaker 2: of how they were deploying certain players and personnel groupings
- 1:50Speaker 2: and so on. But there is you know, football is back, man,
- 1:53Speaker 2: There's a ton to There's a ton to gain from
- 1:55Speaker 2: being there and really being able to absorb what's going on.
- 1:59Speaker 1: One thing that you just said that stood out to
- 2:01Speaker 1: me Barkley as a wide out, how much more do
- 2:04Speaker 1: we anticipate the running backs, maybe not just particularly Barkley,
- 2:07Speaker 1: but utilizing some of their skill sets in the past
- 2:10Speaker 1: game more in this in this offense.
- 2:13Speaker 2: Well, I'm curious to see how that develops, because it
- 2:16Speaker 2: seems like whether it was DeAndre Slip, Miles Sanders, Saquon
- 2:20Speaker 2: Barkley will ship. The running backs have always been a
- 2:23Speaker 2: focal point in training camp and during OTA's in the
- 2:26Speaker 2: passing game, but then when the regular season rolls around,
- 2:29Speaker 2: they're not really incorporated in that capacity. So in an
- 2:34Speaker 2: offense that's predicated on getting rid of the football quickly
- 2:37Speaker 2: and it's going to be timing based, one would think
- 2:40Speaker 2: that those outlet receivers being the running backs here would
- 2:44Speaker 2: make a lot of sense to make sure you're involving
- 2:45Speaker 2: them a little bit more consistently in the offense. But
- 2:48Speaker 2: until I see it happen in the regular season, it's
- 2:51Speaker 2: hard for me to believe that that's going to be,
- 2:54Speaker 2: you know, a mainstay within the offense.
- 2:56Speaker 1: You know, the wide receivers. Obviously aj Brown not there.
- 2:59Speaker 1: The anticipation that is will not be here. When do
- 3:02Speaker 1: you see what's left over? Well, what do you make
- 3:04Speaker 1: of and obviously you have a first round pick out there,
- 3:07Speaker 1: You've got a different room. Is the perception of hey,
- 3:12Speaker 1: more depth is better, or hey two top end stars
- 3:16Speaker 1: is better? What is the makeup of this room and
- 3:18Speaker 1: how different it is from last year.
- 3:21Speaker 2: Well, anytime you subtract Aj Brown, your team's going to
- 3:24Speaker 2: be worse for it. But there's also another way you
- 3:26Speaker 2: can look at it, and I kind of equate it
- 3:28Speaker 2: to the modern MBA where the old guard it was
- 3:33Speaker 2: predicated on building it upon star power. I look at
- 3:36Speaker 2: the Miami Heat from years ago. Now you have to
- 3:38Speaker 2: have depth, and that's something that plagued the Sixers and
- 3:41Speaker 2: the Eagles right now, they're going to be a team
- 3:43Speaker 2: that's going to facilitate the ball to a number of
- 3:46Speaker 2: different options. They have sort of like a basketball team
- 3:49Speaker 2: of wide receivers. You have your Hollywood Brown who's about
- 3:51Speaker 2: five foot nine. You have don Tavian Wick at six'.
- 3:54Speaker 2: One you have Devodday smith who can do a little
- 3:56Speaker 2: bit of. Everything you Have Johnny wilson who's six foot.
- 3:59Speaker 2: Six in an offense like this where you're going to
- 4:02Speaker 2: spread the ball, AROUND i think that maybe it'll serve.
- 4:05Speaker 2: It it'll be just. Fine but make the mistake about,
- 4:08Speaker 2: it you Subtract Aj brown from your. ROSTER i mean
- 4:11Speaker 2: that that's a pretty big. Blow AND i still view
- 4:13Speaker 2: him as an elite player at the, Position but, YEAH
- 4:16Speaker 2: i like the depth that The eagles have acquired over the.
- 4:19Speaker 2: Offseason and Don tavianwix was not there, yesterday but he
- 4:24Speaker 2: was there on the first, day which Was, tuesday and
- 4:26Speaker 2: so he has an understanding of this offense AND i
- 4:30Speaker 2: think that he offers some upside. Here The eagles are
- 4:33Speaker 2: clearly intrigued with, Him that's why they traded for. Him
- 4:35Speaker 2: And Devontae smith has been the number one receiver before
- 4:38Speaker 2: go back to twenty twenty. One he's handled that responsibility
- 4:42Speaker 2: in the, past SO i have really no concern over
- 4:45Speaker 2: his ability to kind of take the mantle.
- 4:46Speaker 1: There what is your thoughts On we were just talking
- 4:49Speaker 1: before you came. On we were reacting to a bite
- 4:53Speaker 1: that asks and wonder What Jalen hurts is WITHOUT Aj,
- 4:57Speaker 1: Brown and his numbers are significantly different WHEN aj he
- 5:00Speaker 1: does not. Play so IS Aj brown a necessity For
- 5:06Speaker 1: Jalen hurts to be?
- 5:07Speaker 2: SUCCESSFUL i THINK Aj brown is in necessity for any
- 5:13Speaker 2: quarterback because he's a top. Receiver BUT i don't necessarily
- 5:17Speaker 2: view it through that lens within this, offense or at
- 5:19Speaker 2: least what we're expecting to see from this, offense BECAUSE
- 5:22Speaker 2: i Think DeVante smith is more than capable of being
- 5:25Speaker 2: that top. Guy and you add In Makayle, lemon who's
- 5:27Speaker 2: going to thrive over the middle of the field at
- 5:29Speaker 2: least in, theory and you also Have Don tavwis is
- 5:33Speaker 2: more of an underneath player who can work the shorts intermediate.
- 5:36Speaker 2: Levels it's a really balanced group and there's not so
- 5:39Speaker 2: much PRESSURE i guess On Jalen hurts to facilitate the
- 5:42Speaker 2: ball at his top. Receiver you can spread it around
- 5:44Speaker 2: and find the open, guy and that's going to be
- 5:46Speaker 2: the main appeal for this. Offense it should make life
- 5:50Speaker 2: easier on the quarterback because you have those built in.
- 5:53Speaker 2: Decisions you have those quick decision making and that's where
- 5:57Speaker 2: timing becomes so. Paramount but you're going to have a
- 5:59Speaker 2: lot of players based on the route concepts that we're
- 6:02Speaker 2: Expecting Josh grizzard And Sean madnian to develop here where
- 6:06Speaker 2: it should once it properly, executed open things up for
- 6:10Speaker 2: the quarterback and make things a little.
- 6:12Speaker 1: Simpler and to check out football at four burns back
- 6:15Speaker 1: on the, field some reactions and, observations what'd you think About?
- 6:19Speaker 1: LEMON i mean just his, speed his, size as, hands
- 6:22Speaker 1: his ability to.
- 6:23Speaker 3: Corral what was your first impressions of the.
- 6:26Speaker 2: Rookie compactly, built sharp route, runner AND i THINK i
- 6:31Speaker 2: KNOW i said it, HERE i said it elsewhere as.
- 6:34Speaker 2: Well he reminds me a lot Of Steve smith and
- 6:36Speaker 2: his body type and his competitiveness and ability to attack the,
- 6:39Speaker 2: football AND i do believe that his skill set translates
- 6:44Speaker 2: favorably to This West coast. Style, now how heavily The
- 6:49Speaker 2: eagles utilized the middle of the field remains to be.
- 6:51Speaker 2: Seen but he's someone that is going to be able
- 6:54Speaker 2: to settle in and find the soft spots and the.
- 6:56Speaker 2: Zone AND i saw a little.
- 6:57Speaker 3: Bit of that.
- 6:58Speaker 2: Yesterday made it to off catching traffic and then had
- 7:01Speaker 2: to drop and then there's a miscommunication on another instance
- 7:04Speaker 2: THAT i can. Recall but he looks the, part AND
- 7:07Speaker 2: i think that he's going to have an early impact
- 7:09Speaker 2: on this. Team all.
- 7:11Speaker 1: RIGHT i want to get your thoughts too when it
- 7:14Speaker 1: comes to the last thing on the. Offense will flip
- 7:16Speaker 1: over to the defense after, this but you, know you,
- 7:19Speaker 1: know one of the things on the offense it's going
- 7:22Speaker 1: to be doing different this year is tight end and
- 7:24Speaker 1: how much different that tight end position and the usage
- 7:27Speaker 1: of that tight end Spot wille because we've been hearing
- 7:29Speaker 1: for a year Like goddard has more in him and
- 7:31Speaker 1: then he would get. Hurt but is this an offense
- 7:34Speaker 1: that because we obviously Saw Green bay the way they
- 7:38Speaker 1: used their tight end and then when he got hurt last,
- 7:40Speaker 1: year that really hurt their.
- 7:41Speaker 3: Offense so what was your impression on how the tight
- 7:43Speaker 3: end could change?
- 7:44Speaker 2: Here there wasn't a ton to really base an opinion off.
- 7:50Speaker 2: Of but If i'm going off of some of the
- 7:52Speaker 2: influences and the offense that he's coming from With Tucker
- 7:55Speaker 2: kraft And Luke, musgrave those two players there were heavily
- 7:59Speaker 2: involved both, ends and in A West coast, offense tight
- 8:04Speaker 2: ends are a focal. Point And Dallas goddard had was
- 8:08Speaker 2: on the receiving end Of Jalen hurts his best throw
- 8:10Speaker 2: of the. Day it was he rifled to pass over the,
- 8:13Speaker 2: middle and you could clearly see if they have that rapport,
- 8:15Speaker 2: already you, know to, me you, know in mid season,
- 8:18Speaker 2: form because that that's something that we see every. Offseason
- 8:21Speaker 2: between those. Two Johnny mutt had a reception during team
- 8:25Speaker 2: drills as the number two tight end working with the first.
- 8:29Speaker 2: Team so, YEAH i mean There's there's not a ton
- 8:32Speaker 2: That i'm dissecting, here but it is something That i'm
- 8:34Speaker 2: expecting to be incorporated pretty heavily within this.
- 8:38Speaker 1: Offense all, right let's go to the defense because we
- 8:41Speaker 1: all are looking forward to What Vic dangio's unit will
- 8:44Speaker 1: goe to up bring. Here and last week about this,
- 8:46Speaker 1: time he spoke and he talked About Cooper dejen playing,
- 8:50Speaker 1: safety and is that an eye opening? Thing is that
- 8:53Speaker 1: something that's not so? WILD i, mean they've used him
- 8:57Speaker 1: mostly as a corner because they played most of their defense.
- 9:00Speaker 1: Nickel but in the base, defense do you think we
- 9:03Speaker 1: see more Of Cooper jene playing strictly safety this?
- 9:07Speaker 2: Year, well The eagles aren't in base very. Often eight,
- 9:11Speaker 2: twelve fifteen plays you know a. Game but you, know
- 9:14Speaker 2: it's not really. SURPRISED i look At cooper's skill. SET
- 9:16Speaker 2: i think he can really thrive. Anywhere he's a unicorn
- 9:19Speaker 2: as far as defensive backs. Go one of the best
- 9:21Speaker 2: pure football players on The Philadelphia. Eagles and when he
- 9:24Speaker 2: was coming out of the, DRAFT i actually evaluated him
- 9:26Speaker 2: as a. Safety so he's just a really good, tackler
- 9:29Speaker 2: has a good feel for, space reads the field, well
- 9:32Speaker 2: has A mac for reading the eyes of the, quarterback
- 9:35Speaker 2: and so, YEAH i do believe it that'll be something
- 9:39Speaker 2: that that you'll you'll notice him making an, impact but
- 9:41Speaker 2: it's going to be, very very. Sporadic they don't they're
- 9:43Speaker 2: not operating in base defense all that.
- 9:46Speaker 1: Often all, right one of the guys you mentioned over
- 9:49Speaker 1: At inside The birds Dot com was a veteran, Cornerback Jonathan.
- 9:53Speaker 1: Jones and you know it's an under the radar signing,
- 9:56Speaker 1: here but you know that room With woolen. Here, NOW
- 10:01Speaker 1: i don't know where you're Putting cooper if he's still
- 10:03Speaker 1: included in that Spot quinna And, mitchell but you Bring
- 10:07Speaker 1: Jonathan jones in, here see a guy that you think
- 10:09Speaker 1: will have and under the radar role on this.
- 10:11Speaker 2: Team, Yeah cooper's a nickel and a. SAFETY i don't
- 10:16Speaker 2: necessarily view him as an outside. Corner But Jonathan, jones to,
- 10:21Speaker 2: me could represent one of the eagles most under the
- 10:25Speaker 2: radar fridge and. Signings and WHAT i mean by that,
- 10:28Speaker 2: is this is a veteran corner who's played in one
- 10:31Speaker 2: hundred and forty four, games starting seventy, eight played in twelve,
- 10:34Speaker 2: games started seven last season For. Washington at thirty two,
- 10:37Speaker 2: years it'll be thirty three By. September but he's coming
- 10:40Speaker 2: in with a lot of experience and positional, versatility and
- 10:43Speaker 2: now you have someone that you feel a little bit
- 10:45Speaker 2: more comfortable going to if an injury should arise at
- 10:50Speaker 2: Either Quinnon cooper Or Riq, wollen as opposed to last,
- 10:55Speaker 2: season when you were just toggling Between Keey ringo and
- 10:57Speaker 2: A Dori, jackson you could barely settle on a starting,
- 11:00Speaker 2: corner let alone feel confident about your depth. Option SO
- 11:04Speaker 2: i Think Jonathan. Jones and yesterday he had a pick
- 11:06Speaker 2: six Of Andy. Dalton it's, OTAs but he made the,
- 11:10Speaker 2: play and that's an encouraging sign smart football, player just
- 11:15Speaker 2: just a pros pro and he showed up and he.
- 11:17Speaker 2: Delivered SO i like that. Signing AND i like it
- 11:20Speaker 2: even more as long as he's able to stay, healthy
- 11:23Speaker 2: because he did miss some time last. Year he was
- 11:25Speaker 2: ON ir with a hamstring. Injury something to keep an
- 11:27Speaker 2: eye on as an older, player but someone WHO i,
- 11:29Speaker 2: think if, healthy will help The eagles next. Season and
- 11:33Speaker 2: you hope you don't have to see him on the,
- 11:34Speaker 2: field but he does give you that.
- 11:36Speaker 1: Luxury, Yeah and then the safety, spot you Got mkooba back.
- 11:39Speaker 1: There a little glowing review On Marcus EPs last. Week
- 11:43Speaker 1: you know that was good to hear in terms of
- 11:45Speaker 1: your App, So Michael, carter he's in the. Mix one
- 11:48Speaker 1: GUY i don't think he practiced yesterday was the draft
- 11:51Speaker 1: Pick cole Was, nowski But fanjo didn't make any mention.
- 11:54Speaker 1: Him Andre, SAM i know he's a guy that you've
- 11:56Speaker 1: liked over the. Years so the other safety's in that,
- 11:59Speaker 1: Spot epps And carter And Andre. Sam what is your
- 12:03Speaker 1: read on the safety spot now that you got a
- 12:06Speaker 1: chance to kind of see everybody out.
- 12:07Speaker 2: There, Yeah so first mccooba, looked you, know he looked
- 12:12Speaker 2: as his normal self before the. Injury he was moving
- 12:15Speaker 2: around really. Well he headlines this. Group of, COURSE bix
- 12:18Speaker 2: season for him entering year, two But i'm more curious
- 12:22Speaker 2: to see how the depth shakes. Out and you Mentioned Marcus,
- 12:24Speaker 2: evs he's a veteran. Player he got the nod to
- 12:27Speaker 2: start seven on sevens and team drills Alongside drew. Mccouba
- 12:32Speaker 2: and then the second team was comprised That Michael, carter
- 12:34Speaker 2: the second who's an interesting, player does have a lot
- 12:37Speaker 2: of prior history With Joe. Casper they were At duke
- 12:40Speaker 2: together and they spent some time together last, season so
- 12:44Speaker 2: there's obviously confident confidence there that he can translate to this.
- 12:48Speaker 2: Position just a little bit more on the undersized. Build
- 12:52Speaker 2: it was him And andre sam as the second team.
- 12:55Speaker 2: SAFETIES a third team Was Brandon, johnson A Maximus Pulley
- 12:58Speaker 2: Brandon johnson a second Year Maximus point undrafted free. Agent
- 13:02Speaker 2: and you mentioned Wiz nesky was not, There, well he was,
- 13:05Speaker 2: there but he didn't, practice so with an undisclosed. Ailment so,
- 13:10Speaker 2: yeah so that's that's their safety room right. Now AND
- 13:13Speaker 2: i think you owe it to these players to go
- 13:15Speaker 2: out there and you, know at least prove it to
- 13:18Speaker 2: the coaching staff if they need to look for external,
- 13:20Speaker 2: health get do you want to see what you have
- 13:22Speaker 2: first before you go looking for a reinforcement and right
- 13:27Speaker 2: now everything you, know we're still very early into this,
- 13:29Speaker 2: process and that's the group that they're at the moment
- 13:32Speaker 2: going to take into training.
- 13:33Speaker 3: Camp, yeah you wrote that according to you, know the eye.
- 13:37Speaker 1: Test, Anyway Nolan, Smith, Cooper Dejen, Tank bigsby look like
- 13:42Speaker 1: they're bigger. Guys Nolan smith an interesting. Guy obviously got
- 13:45Speaker 1: into a little trouble with the speeding. Ticket the Other
- 13:47Speaker 1: day big season for? Him Is smith a guy that
- 13:52Speaker 1: is kind of on notice this, year like this is
- 13:54Speaker 1: a big year for.
- 13:55Speaker 2: Him i'd also Add Ty robinson's that. List he looks
- 13:58Speaker 2: like he added some strength to him over the. Offseason, yeah,
- 14:03Speaker 2: yeah defensive.
- 14:04Speaker 3: Tackle.
- 14:04Speaker 2: Yeah For Nolan, smith this is a big year for.
- 14:07Speaker 2: Him j Loox hunting j Loox, hunt in my, opinion
- 14:10Speaker 2: has sort of leaped them in the pecking. Order but
- 14:13Speaker 2: that's gonna be a really interesting battle to keep an
- 14:15Speaker 2: eye on in training camp because it's not a surefire
- 14:19Speaker 2: determination that Jalox hunt's going to be the edge rusher
- 14:22Speaker 2: Opposite Jonathan. GRENARD i think he has a little bit more.
- 14:26Speaker 2: Upside But Nolan, smith if he goes out there and
- 14:29Speaker 2: he really performs and he gives you nine ten, SACKS
- 14:34Speaker 2: i mean that's that's a luxury and he could, really you,
- 14:37Speaker 2: know state his case to command a long term deal
- 14:40Speaker 2: for The eagles as, Well but not with With NOLAN
- 14:43Speaker 2: i think pound for, pound he's one of the more
- 14:45Speaker 2: physical edge rushers in the. Game he throws his body
- 14:47Speaker 2: around much in the mold of a throwback, player and
- 14:50Speaker 2: he just hasn't been able to stay. Healthy so that's
- 14:52Speaker 2: an area of concern there and maybe as the third
- 14:55Speaker 2: edge rusher in this, instance it would take some of
- 14:59Speaker 2: them and some of the tread of on the tire
- 15:02Speaker 2: off and preserve him more for the stretch down the
- 15:06Speaker 2: at the end of the season and keep him. Fresh
- 15:08Speaker 2: so that's kind of the way That i'm doing it right.
- 15:10Speaker 2: NOW i Think jay Looks hunt right now has more
- 15:12Speaker 2: of the inside track to be that number. Two very.
- 15:15Speaker 1: Good last, GUY i want to ask you about His,
- 15:16Speaker 1: woolen the free agent, acquisition who obviously is a big
- 15:21Speaker 1: dude to play. Corner when you see him in that
- 15:23Speaker 1: with those other, corners he's got to stand.
- 15:26Speaker 2: Out, yeah he really stands apart from all of the defensive,
- 15:31Speaker 2: backs and you don't see many six foot four, corners
- 15:34Speaker 2: AND i can tell you seeing him in, Person, Mike,
- 15:36Speaker 2: yeah he's every bit of six foot. Four he used
- 15:39Speaker 2: his length to his advantage on one occasion Where DeVante
- 15:43Speaker 2: smith got behind him down the. Sideline the pass was
- 15:46Speaker 2: underthrown and woman didn't necessarily have the best, position but
- 15:50Speaker 2: he kind of got his, uh you, know he used
- 15:53Speaker 2: his length to deflect the pass. Away and when Vic
- 15:57Speaker 2: vangio offers praise in the way that he did About.
- 15:59Speaker 2: Riek one thing that the audience should know is That
- 16:02Speaker 2: Vic fangio doesn't offer hollow praise and if it's, warranted
- 16:06Speaker 2: he's going to say. It and so when he says
- 16:09Speaker 2: those things and was curious as to How wollen didn't
- 16:11Speaker 2: have a larger market and free, agency that tells you
- 16:15Speaker 2: how he views the. Player and SO i think that
- 16:18Speaker 2: his skill, set if he's able to be technically sound
- 16:21Speaker 2: and detailed and really takes to the, system he's going
- 16:25Speaker 2: to be a big, option a big time option for this.
- 16:29Speaker 2: Team AND i kind of view him as AN x
- 16:30Speaker 2: factor because if he is settled in and entrench in
- 16:34Speaker 2: that cornerback spot OPPOSITE. Quinnya, mitchell it just provides so
- 16:37Speaker 2: much more optionality for What Vic vangie can do in
- 16:40Speaker 2: terms of deploying his. Personnel SO i, think you, know
