- 0:42I am your host,
- 0:44Mindy mcculley Extension Specialist for instructional support.
- 0:48My guest today is Doctor Ahmad Kke,
- 0:51associate professor of Prosthodontics.
- 0:54Welcome,
- 0:54Doctor Cut Cut.
- 0:56Thank you.
- 0:57I'm excited to talk to you about common questions about dental implants because I think that this is probably a topic that a lot of people might have questions about,
- 1:08but they don't really know where to get the answers.
- 1:11So I think we're gonna answer some of those questions.
- 1:15So my first question for you is what are some things that we need to deal with before we ever talk about dental implants?
- 1:26Do we really need to talk about good oral and general health.
- 1:30First.
- 1:32Yes.
- 1:32Uh First of all,
- 1:33I would like to thank you again for the opportunity and uh addressing this important issue to the public.
- 1:39Uh This is a great initiative.
- 1:42Uh Definitely the good oral hygiene.
- 1:45Good general health is a main factor for making the treatment any kind of dental treatment successful for the patient,
- 1:55especially dental implant.
- 1:56Because dental implant involves surgical procedures and some treatment that needed prior to the actual implant,
- 2:06uh placement and restorations,
- 2:08maintenance,
- 2:09oral hygiene,
- 2:10cleaning,
- 2:11brushing,
- 2:11flossing.
- 2:12These need to be addressed before even thinking or planning for uh this type of treatment.
- 2:19So if we can at all possible,
- 2:24we want to maintain that natural truth,
- 2:27right?
- 2:28Yes,
- 2:28it's really important to do our best to maintain the tie that we have.
- 2:35Um God gave us which you know,
- 2:37cannot be replaced with anything else at the same quality and same material.
- 2:42But thankfully,
- 2:44we have the opportunity in cases that implant or any dental treatment needed.
- 2:50Uh We have that option uh available to restore uh function and uh chewing ability for patients who need the treatment.
- 3:00So what exactly are dental implants?
- 3:05Good question dental implants.
- 3:07Simply a small device needed to replace a missing tooth.
- 3:12So if we are thinking about uh the actual human tooth,
- 3:16uh the tooth has two parts,
- 3:19the root that embedded in the bone and the crown that showed the oral cavity.
- 3:29So if we gonna replace that natural tooth by an implant.
- 3:33We have to think about merely these two components.
- 3:37The root component which is like a screw or post inserted in the bone and the other component involved in the crown portion to mimic the natural tooth crown.
- 3:52The material that used for dental implant is titanium.
- 3:56And the best benefit of titanium is integrating to the jawbone,
- 4:03that means it's very compatible.
- 4:05So the body accepted doesn't reject the implant to replace that missing tooth.
- 4:11The other component that needed is the connecting the crown to the implant fixture that replacing the the root of the tooth.
- 4:21Uh what we call the connector is abu so the abutment is connecting the implant crown to the implant fixture to fully have the implant completed in three component or three parts,
- 4:35the implant post,
- 4:37the abutment and the infant crown that fabricated to match the natural teeth.
- 4:45So this replaces one tooth that's missing,
- 4:49not the when where we see on television,
- 4:53maybe somebody who has lost all of their teeth and has to get denture.
- 4:57Yes.
- 4:58Uh So when we talk about a single replacement of a tooth,
- 5:02that's the implant component as implant fixture,
- 5:06Ament and crown.
- 5:07When it comes to the fully entous patients who had no teeth,
- 5:12then we have different ways of replacing the missing teeth with like either infant supported dentures or,
- 5:21or implant,
- 5:22uh fixed kind of crown and bridge option.
- 5:26Uh So we can talk about different modality treatments with entous patients who have no teeth.
- 5:34But definitely the implant can improve the patient's quality of life and satisfaction with their dentures if they are unhappy with it.
- 5:42Ok,
- 5:43so I'm guessing then that's one of the benefits of dental implants.
- 5:47What are some other benefits of dental implants?
- 5:50Yes,
- 5:50this is a,
- 5:50a great question.
- 5:52We need to think about uh the consequences of missing teeth.
- 5:56What happened after the patient lost a tooth if we don't replace that missing space or the gap in the patient's mouth,
- 6:05first,
- 6:06we're gonna lose the bone,
- 6:07then we're gonna have teeth shifting around to fill in that gap.
- 6:13So we have ac causal problem,
- 6:16biting issues that may create other problems for the patient.
- 6:22So the best benefit of the dental implant is replacing the missing tooth to fully gain the chewing ability function and eating most of the patients.
- 6:35They do not find differences between the dental impact and the nature of tooth,
- 6:41you know,
- 6:41after replacement.
- 6:43Uh So that's a great deal.
- 6:44Actually,
- 6:45they can eat normally,
- 6:47they can brush and plus normally when we talk about single infant replacement,
- 6:51the other benefits can be considered as improving the patient's satisfaction with their dentures by adding implant to retain or keep the denture in place with different ways of treatment.
- 7:08The denture itself may create more damage to the ridges and so they have more bone loss and wear on their jaw,
- 7:18bone so the infant can keep maintaining that bone for a longer time.
- 7:24And I'm guessing that improved quality of life or satisfaction with their appearance might be another benefit.
- 7:30Absolutely.
- 7:31Yeah,
- 7:31that's another benefit because they maintain their uh facial architecture and facial smile and facial support to their lips and cheeks and they can look normal when they have that option.
- 7:44The treatment that,
- 7:46that definitely sounds good.
- 7:48So,
- 7:48are there downsides to den dental implants?
- 7:51Uh dental implants is uh a surgical procedure to place that implant before restoration.
- 7:58Any surgical procedure has a risk of infection failure.
- 8:05These are the most common complication after dental implant placement surgery.
- 8:11But it's not that common though.
- 8:12The success rate of the implant treatment is very high.
- 8:15It's 98% in many cases.
- 8:19So it's very safe procedure,
- 8:21very successful.
- 8:22However,
- 8:24some patients may be not good candidate for that.
- 8:27Not all patients can tolerate surgical procedures.
- 8:32Sure.
- 8:33How would I know if I was a good candidate?
- 8:35Good question.
- 8:36Basically,
- 8:37if the patient has missing one or multiple teeth.
- 8:41Uh and in their general,
- 8:43like good general health,
- 8:45they don't have any contra indication from the systemic diseases like bone disease or they don't have uh medication that probably make the surgical procedure a risk factor for like complications.
- 9:03Uh then uh dental implant is really a valid and good treatment option uh to replace missing teeth and enhance the patient's experience with their dentures if they are unhappy with the denture work or the bridge work.
- 9:19Uh Some cases,
- 9:21if there's insufficient bone available for infant placement,
- 9:25that's probably another factor limiting the ability to place the implant for the patient.
- 9:31In general.
- 9:32Technology is enhancing and making the treatment much easier.
- 9:37Uh The advancement in dental material or biomaterial for drafting that needed uh prior to the implant placement also is a promising uh field that can help most of the patients receive their implant safely and successfully.
- 9:55Ok.
- 9:56Is this an expensive procedure?
- 9:58You know,
- 9:59uh it depends,
- 10:00it depends on,
- 10:01on,
- 10:01on a number of implants uh on the case like single replacement or multiple replacement of teeth or fully in like we're gonna replace like full mouth rehabilitation to restore all missing teeth.
- 10:15Uh So various treatment reflect different cost.
- 10:20Uh but if you think about replacing a single tooth,
- 10:23either a bridge or an implant,
- 10:27you can think about it uh in in a way that you can save the adjacent teeth without modification or preparation to put that bridge to replace that missing tooth.
- 10:38On the other hand,
- 10:40single implant replacement cost wise may be similar to the three unit of bridge if if not cheaper.
- 10:47In some cases,
- 10:48if you wanna add root canal treatment uh or other treatment that needed to make that bridge successful,
- 10:55probably single in replacement,
- 10:57considered a bitter option,
- 11:00financial wise.
- 11:02And I'm sure that depending on what type of insurance you have uh that might have an impact as well.
- 11:07Absolutely.
- 11:08Yes.
- 11:09Doctor Cut Cut.
