- 0:02Speaker 1: Happy Friday. It's Perzinski Friday with Kratz and me. So, guys,
- 0:09Speaker 1: we have a lot to cover today. AJ there's two
- 0:11Speaker 1: things I want to do at the top. One is,
- 0:13Speaker 1: of course, talk about your favorite team before we dive
- 0:15Speaker 1: into the judge injury. The Cubs game was really fun
- 0:18Speaker 1: to watch yesterday because they had been so bad at
- 0:21Speaker 1: home for a while and then the PCA thing happens.
- 0:24Speaker 1: The reason I'm bringing this up is sometimes when people
- 0:26Speaker 1: ask me where my allegiance is, I root for cool
- 0:28Speaker 1: stories and storylines. For example, when you see PCA miss
- 0:33Speaker 1: a baseball out there, get lost in the lights, team
- 0:36Speaker 1: can't win a game, and then he hits a homer
- 0:37Speaker 1: and then he has the walk off. I like that stuff.
- 0:40Speaker 1: And one other example from yesterday Carmen Macinski who pops
- 0:44Speaker 1: up in the bullpen with four innings of one run
- 0:46Speaker 1: ball for the Pirates to piggyback Gared Jones in a
- 0:49Speaker 1: win for Pittsburgh and really help the team that has
- 0:52Speaker 1: a really bad bullpen right now, those two storylines, for me,
- 0:55Speaker 1: that's what I root for.
- 0:58Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean PA has had a rough go, the
- 1:01Speaker 2: Cubs have had a rough go, and PC eight does
- 1:03Speaker 2: the thing where he loses the inside the park to
- 1:07Speaker 2: Shay Langoliers and then all of a sudden, they score
- 1:10Speaker 2: all those runs at the end of the game to
- 1:11Speaker 2: come back and win a PC up to walk off
- 1:13Speaker 2: of redemption whatever you want to call was pretty cool.
- 1:15Speaker 3: It's actually really awesome.
- 1:17Speaker 2: And then yeah, the Pirates needed it, and they got
- 1:21Speaker 2: it from the guy who they had just restricted. Right,
- 1:24Speaker 2: but he figured it out. He came back and said,
- 1:26Speaker 2: you know what, I need to be a part of
- 1:28Speaker 2: this team. And he did a great thing. And he
- 1:29Speaker 2: gave him four innings, one run, got a save, which
- 1:33Speaker 2: I don't know if he had him getting any saves
- 1:35Speaker 2: on his card for this year, but he got him
- 1:37Speaker 2: a nice save, and the Pirates won a game that
- 1:39Speaker 2: they needed to win.
- 1:39Speaker 3: It was It was a nice redemption night for a.
- 1:41Speaker 4: Couple of guys.
- 1:43Speaker 1: Yeah, hey, doesn't that count an arbitration Kratz, because I know,
- 1:47Speaker 1: you know, you can be pissed if you're a guy
- 1:49Speaker 1: with the mid three Zra you get sent to the bullpen.
- 1:52Speaker 1: But you know, in arbitration he could be like, excuse me.
- 1:55Speaker 1: During let's say he ends up spending a month in
- 1:57Speaker 1: the bullpen. I picked up three saves during that time period,
- 2:00Speaker 1: including the three inning plus variety, which sometimes can mean
- 2:04Speaker 1: even more because you're picking up innings.
- 2:07Speaker 4: So first time arbitration eligible guys twenty eight years old
- 2:11Speaker 4: with three saves and seventeen wins under their belt. Eh,
- 2:16Speaker 4: I don't think the three saves are really getting there
- 2:18Speaker 4: unless he becomes their closer. What a story.
- 2:23Speaker 1: Hey, that could happen too anyway. I thought that was
- 2:27Speaker 1: fun from yesterday. Now the bad stuff from yesterday. Let's charge.
- 2:35Speaker 1: What do you have for us? We've been covering this
- 2:37Speaker 1: all week.
- 2:37Speaker 4: AJ the.
- 2:39Speaker 1: Rib situation for Aaron Judge a stress a stress fracture
- 2:43Speaker 1: of the first rib on his right side of the
- 2:45Speaker 1: Yankees announce. So he's not out four to six weeks.
- 2:48Speaker 1: He's going to be reassessed in the next four to
- 2:51Speaker 1: six weeks. Who's got the construction action going on?
- 2:55Speaker 2: I think that's me. I think there's someone in my
- 2:58Speaker 2: in the backyard beeping. I don't know who it is,
- 3:00Speaker 2: but sorry, I can't control I can't control the cars
- 3:02Speaker 2: that are around.
- 3:03Speaker 4: Me that brings truck. That's what it is.
- 3:06Speaker 3: Yeah, for Aaron Judge, exactly. Yeah, this sucks.
- 3:11Speaker 2: I remember we talked about this yesterday Scott. What's the injury?
- 3:14Speaker 2: We didn't know where is it, how did it happen?
- 3:15Speaker 2: All these questions we had, and now we know his
- 3:19Speaker 2: first rib. So that's like way up here right like
- 3:21Speaker 2: that's I think at one point they thought he might
- 3:23Speaker 2: need the the what is it where they go in
- 3:25Speaker 2: and they have to open.
- 3:26Speaker 3: The vein drastic outlet. That was one of the worries.
- 3:30Speaker 3: I think for a while.
- 3:31Speaker 1: It's not littled out yet.
- 3:33Speaker 3: Oh well, that's that would be worse.
- 3:35Speaker 2: That would be what Zack Wheeler had, right, So I
- 3:39Speaker 2: at least they think they figured out what it is,
- 3:41Speaker 2: stress reaction in the right rib, but it's so high
- 3:43Speaker 2: up there it's hard to get imaging of it. They
- 3:46Speaker 2: figured it out now that now he's got to get better.
- 3:48Speaker 2: But these stress fractures can last a long time. He
- 3:50Speaker 2: can't really do anything. So even if he's out, let's
- 3:52Speaker 2: say he's out four weeks, they reassess he's better, then.
- 3:56Speaker 3: He's got to go.
- 3:56Speaker 2: He's gonna have to go on at least probably a
- 3:58Speaker 2: two week rehab to once he starts being able to
- 4:00Speaker 2: do stuff. So I mean, I think minimum he's out
- 4:03Speaker 2: six weeks, and that sucks for the Yankees. They can
- 4:05Speaker 2: cover it because they're swinging the bats. Well, they're pitching
- 4:07Speaker 2: really well. But it sucks, and you can, you know
- 4:10Speaker 2: what's the craziest part. You can pretty much take him
- 4:13Speaker 2: out of the MVP discussion.
- 4:14Speaker 4: Now, yeah, well I didn't even think about that part
- 4:18Speaker 4: of it. But obviously when you hear thoracic outlet and
- 4:20Speaker 4: you think of Wheeler, you're like, like, if we're talking
- 4:24Speaker 4: blood clots, that's like life altering, not to sport altering.
- 4:28Speaker 4: Haven't heard anything about blood clots. But basically, when you
- 4:31Speaker 4: have that pinching, if there's if there's no space there,
- 4:36Speaker 4: the rib can get irritated, the you know, your arm
- 4:39Speaker 4: can get irritated. How long was he dealing with it?
- 4:42Speaker 4: Was it caused by something? Hopefully we find more information out,
- 4:45Speaker 4: but this is this is a big blow for any
- 4:49Speaker 4: lineup to lose their MVP candidate. I don't care what
- 4:51Speaker 4: he was hitting. It's a big blow.
- 4:54Speaker 1: How big. Let's assume that it's about two months eight weeks.
- 4:58Speaker 3: Right.
- 4:59Speaker 1: Let's assume that it some point in that four to
- 5:01Speaker 1: six week window, he gets checked, he gets cleared, and
- 5:04Speaker 1: returns a few weeks after that. Right, Let's say it's
- 5:07Speaker 1: five weeks and then three weeks to get him back
- 5:09Speaker 1: in terms of rehab, and then eventually in even just
- 5:12Speaker 1: a week of games. AJ, how much does it hurt
- 5:14Speaker 1: the Yankees? Do you think that it could risk their
- 5:17Speaker 1: playoff chances? Or do you think there is enough around
- 5:21Speaker 1: him with Ballinger and Trent Grisham was unlucky in the
- 5:26Speaker 1: beginning of the year, now playing better, John Carlow on
- 5:29Speaker 1: his way back, Jason Dominguez on his way back. I
- 5:32Speaker 1: mean I don't have to name every player. Obviously, Ben
- 5:34Speaker 1: Rice has been their superstar. He's been better than Judge.
- 5:36Speaker 1: Numbers wise, we're showing one chart here, Yanks year by
- 5:39Speaker 1: year without Aren Judge twenty nineteen, they went forty two
- 5:43Speaker 1: and eighteen without him. But since then, since twenty twenty
- 5:47Speaker 1: I did the math here real quick. There are one
- 5:49Speaker 1: hundred and thirty eight games over five hundred when he plays,
- 5:52Speaker 1: there eight games under five hundred when he's not in
- 5:56Speaker 1: the lineup. And the one other caveat I'll mention AJ
- 5:59Speaker 1: is how how much does it affect the rest of
- 6:01Speaker 1: the offense being that they'll be focused on more Like,
- 6:04Speaker 1: now you can circle Ben Rice, but this guy can't
- 6:06Speaker 1: beat us.
- 6:08Speaker 2: Well, they can just play five hundred. Even if there
- 6:09Speaker 2: are a couple of games under five hundred. With the
- 6:11Speaker 2: way the American League is, they'll be fine. Again, They're
- 6:14Speaker 2: pitching has been so good. I mean, they're twelve games
- 6:17Speaker 2: over right now, right, they're thirty seven and twenty five,
- 6:19Speaker 2: so we're sixty two games and they have one hundred
- 6:21Speaker 2: games remaining. Let's say he misses two months, that puts
- 6:24Speaker 2: him into August. That's eight weeks. You know, just guessing here.
- 6:28Speaker 3: If they go.
- 6:30Speaker 2: Twenty five and twenty five and those next even if
- 6:33Speaker 2: they go you know, a couple games under twenty two
- 6:36Speaker 2: and twenty four or something like that, you know, whatever
- 6:39Speaker 2: the numbers are, they'll be fine because I don't see
- 6:42Speaker 2: another team that's gonna jump and catch up, even the Orioles. Right,
- 6:46Speaker 2: they're three games under. They'd have to go fifteen games
- 6:49Speaker 2: over five hundred in those two months to get back
- 6:51Speaker 2: to Yankees if they just play five hundred, and I
- 6:54Speaker 2: think because their pitching is so good, and Ben Rice,
- 6:56Speaker 2: like you mentioned, some of these other guys have really
- 6:58Speaker 2: stepped up Stanton's coming back, I think they can do that.
- 7:01Speaker 2: I think they're going to be okay and I think
- 7:03Speaker 2: when Judge comes back, it'll be like, hey, we got
- 7:04Speaker 2: another guy from the trade deadline. Now we're rolling with
- 7:07Speaker 2: our captain. Here we go, boys and slide right into
- 7:10Speaker 2: the playoffs and see where they're at.
- 7:14Speaker 1: Kratz. I know you love dad jokes. This is not
- 7:16Speaker 1: a joke. Ridges five and one Travel Power Bank is
- 7:19Speaker 1: the answer to all of your messy wires all over
- 7:22Speaker 1: the place issues.
- 7:24Speaker 4: Yeah, one hundred percent. I don't need more tube socks.
- 7:26Speaker 4: I need this because somebody is going to use my
- 7:28Speaker 4: phone that I fully charged and then dies halfway through
- 7:32Speaker 4: the softball game that I go to. So this will
- 7:34Speaker 4: lock it in and my friend next to me who
- 7:36Speaker 4: forgot to charge his phone.

- 7:46Speaker 1: of your issues. So many elite features, mag Safe wireless charging,

- 8:10Speaker 1: you purchase the last where you heard about them, Please
- 8:12Speaker 1: support our show and tell them we sent you.
- 8:15Speaker 4: I think everybody gets pissed about John Carlow getting hurt,
- 8:18Speaker 4: but you know what, when he's out there and he's
- 8:21Speaker 4: on his streak when he's on, when he's on, I
- 8:25Speaker 4: mean he's he's clipping five homers a series. So to me,
- 8:29Speaker 4: I think Gee's close enough to coming back. This gives
- 8:34Speaker 4: them enough flexibility. And I also think they're still athletic
- 8:37Speaker 4: enough to be able to say, okay, belly slides over,
- 8:43Speaker 4: Spencer Jones comes up. Now, Spencer Jones gets to play
- 8:46Speaker 4: his natural position that he's played his entire career. And
- 8:49Speaker 4: they still in the minor leagues, and so I think
- 8:53Speaker 4: they're structured well enough. The lineup is never going to
- 8:56Speaker 4: be the same without him in it. Teams just do
- 9:00Speaker 4: not They would much rather pitch to Cody Bellinger, Ben Rice,
- 9:05Speaker 4: Paul Goldschmid, whoever it is, with nobody on base, but
- 9:09Speaker 4: they sure as heck do not want to let Aaron
- 9:11Speaker 4: Judge do what Aaron Judge does and score a run
- 9:15Speaker 4: by himself by hitting a homer. So that's why a
- 9:17Speaker 4: guy like Judge changes a line up more than anybody
- 9:21Speaker 4: else in the game.
- 9:22Speaker 1: And he had a nine oh seven OPS this year.
- 9:24Speaker 1: But Chris Kershner in The Athletic pointed out he's chase
- 9:27Speaker 1: pitches out of the strike zone at his highest rate
- 9:29Speaker 1: since twenty sixteen, swung at pitches inside the strike zone
- 9:32Speaker 1: at his lowest rates since twenty sixteen, swung at the
- 9:35Speaker 1: fewest meat balls aka pitch is thrown in the heart
- 9:37Speaker 1: of the strike zone since twenty sixteen, and his ground
- 9:40Speaker 1: ball rate was the highest since twenty twenty one. So
- 9:43Speaker 1: it's still produced a nine oh seven OPS. But for Judge,
- 9:45Speaker 1: that's not good enough, right Judge wants to be the MVP,
- 9:49Speaker 1: best player on the planet, best hitter on the planet
- 9:51Speaker 1: that he's been, and so for the Yankees, you try
- 9:54Speaker 1: and take that exchange. I know it sucks to not
- 9:55Speaker 1: have him, but AJ if he actually can completely heal
- 9:59Speaker 1: and come back and be thousand plus opss, Aaron, Judge,
- 10:02Speaker 1: that's what you want. I would trade one or two months,
- 10:05Speaker 1: especially with the supporting cast. Now, this is not twenty
- 10:07Speaker 1: twenty three when they went twenty five and thirty one
- 10:09Speaker 1: without him, and there are only two above average hitters
- 10:12Speaker 1: that season by ops plus were DJ Lemayhew and I
- 10:17Speaker 1: just lost my spot. But there was one other back then,
- 10:20Speaker 1: and this year is very different. They have five guys
- 10:23Speaker 1: with above apps pluses. It was glaber tourists. There's five
- 10:27Speaker 1: guys now and that's not including gold Schmid and Rosario
- 10:30Speaker 1: not qualifying. But they've been good off the bench. They
- 10:33Speaker 1: have way more offensive depth.
- 10:35Speaker 4: Yeah, that's what he said.
- 10:36Speaker 1: That's what he said.
- 10:38Speaker 4: That's what he said.
- 10:40Speaker 1: That's what he said. The quality of the baseballs, it
- 10:46Speaker 1: will always, well for the near future, be a topic
- 10:49Speaker 1: in our sport until we get a uniform baseball. So
- 10:53Speaker 1: let's cue the latest. First off, did you guys see
- 10:56Speaker 1: the other day Ronald Cunya Junior was staring at two
- 10:58Speaker 1: baseballs and apparently he was at actually trying to see
- 11:01Speaker 1: what the difference was. Mark Bowman asked him what he
- 11:04Speaker 1: was doing there, and he laughed and said he had
- 11:05Speaker 1: kept staring at the baseballs because it looked like one
- 11:07Speaker 1: was bigger than the other. Stay tuned for further updates.
- 11:10Speaker 1: So that was kind of funny. And then a day
- 11:11Speaker 1: later we actually get a story out that Bailey Ober
- 11:15Speaker 1: has filed an official complaint with Major League Baseball. So
- 11:18Speaker 1: he's on the IL right now, and he's got a
- 11:21Speaker 1: mild flexer strain, right flexer strain. This is Bob Nightingale
- 11:24Speaker 1: putting this story out, and I'll reach you some quotes
- 11:28Speaker 1: from the story with Ober talking about the baseball's in
- 11:32Speaker 1: his last start in Boston before he hit the shelf
- 11:34Speaker 1: as the worst in his six year career. He said,
- 11:36Speaker 1: I haven't dealt with poorly rubbed up baseballs to that extent. Ever,
- 11:40Speaker 1: the only way to be able to throw slick baseballs
- 11:42Speaker 1: is to grip them harder so you can execute your pitches.
- 11:44Speaker 1: If not, you're not going to know where the ball
- 11:46Speaker 1: is going, especially with breaking pitches. Everyone that came in
- 11:49Speaker 1: after me, the believers, they all said the same thing.
- 11:51Speaker 1: Then he said he checked on the other clubhouse two
- 11:53Speaker 1: with some of his friends there, like Sonny Gray and
- 11:55Speaker 1: Danny Klum right after the game. They both said the
- 11:58Speaker 1: same thing. So, AJ, do we think we have a
- 12:02Speaker 1: problem here? When someone mentions the worst baseballs he's ever
- 12:05Speaker 1: dealt with.
- 12:09Speaker 2: You hear about this sometimes you hear about guys complaining
- 12:11Speaker 2: about the balls. I mean, everyone rubs up the balls differently.
- 12:14Speaker 2: It's not like there's a uniform way to rub up
- 12:16Speaker 2: the balls. The umpires look at them. Usually before the game,
- 12:18Speaker 2: they get a big bag of them or two where
- 12:21Speaker 2: someone usually the bullpen catcher, someone on the home side
- 12:23Speaker 2: has rubbed up the balls.
- 12:25Speaker 3: And I don't know, maybe they didn't.
- 12:27Speaker 2: Use enough of the what is it the Maryland mud
- 12:29Speaker 2: or the Delaware mud or whatever the specific mud they
- 12:32Speaker 2: have to use. Maybe they got a bad batch, maybe rained.
- 12:35Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 12:36Speaker 2: I've heard guys complain about the balls, but usually they
- 12:38Speaker 2: just throw them out and find one and they're like, Okay,
- 12:41Speaker 2: this one's good, I'll use this one. Oh, that one's
- 12:43Speaker 2: not good. You see guys throw them out. So I've
- 12:45Speaker 2: heard guys complain. I've never said I've never heard anyone
- 12:47Speaker 2: say they got injured because of it. But I just
- 12:50Speaker 2: don't know why we can't figure out some sort of
- 12:53Speaker 2: something to put on the baseball like they do in Japan,
- 12:55Speaker 2: to make them tacky and make them sticky, and make
- 12:58Speaker 2: it uniform so nobody has to worry about this anymore.
- 13:00Speaker 2: It seems like an easy fix, but it also seems
- 13:03Speaker 2: like we're not anywhere close to that we don't want.
- 13:06Speaker 4: Them tacky tacky though, so we just want them a
- 13:08Speaker 4: little tacky, but not tacky tacky. This is some people
- 13:11Speaker 4: will say, oh, he's making excuses and the fact that
- 13:14Speaker 4: when ronald'cuny's thing where he had the two baseballs, that
- 13:19Speaker 4: that's what I said the next day, like I was like, yeah,
- 13:21Speaker 4: that's how you would you feel you can tell a difference.
- 13:25Speaker 4: And that's a position player. That's a dude that plays
- 13:28Speaker 4: right field that barely touches the baseball. A pitcher comes
- 13:32Speaker 4: out and complains this much, this boldly, They one hundred percent, no,
- 13:37Speaker 4: they know if there's like they grip the ball, wait
- 13:40Speaker 4: a minute, they look at it and one side feels
- 13:43Speaker 4: different than the other one. You one hundred percent know
- 13:46Speaker 4: when you are that specific in your craft, you one
- 13:50Speaker 4: hundred percent know if there's something different in the ball.
- 13:53Speaker 4: And I think something needs to be seen about or
- 13:54Speaker 4: checked about this because if Bailey Ober did hurt his
- 13:59Speaker 4: elbow because of this, because there was some kind of
- 14:01Speaker 4: negligence or there was some kind of like, oh, we're
- 14:04Speaker 4: trying something different, then somebody needs to be held responsible
- 14:09Speaker 4: because this is what guys complained about when they took
- 14:12Speaker 4: the spider tack or any tackiness or any sticky anything
- 14:16Speaker 4: that you can put on the ball. You had to
- 14:19Speaker 4: grip it tighter. You have to grip it tighter to
- 14:21Speaker 4: have that same feel, which ultimately, when you grip a
- 14:25Speaker 4: ball tighter, you can see my forearm flexes more, which
- 14:30Speaker 4: gives more pressure to that elbow. And anybody that argues
- 14:34Speaker 4: against that, they are have never thrown a baseball over
- 14:38Speaker 4: ninety miles an hour.
- 14:42Speaker 1: So aj I guess the question I have is, because
- 14:45Speaker 1: it comes up every year, do we need to work
- 14:49Speaker 1: harder as a sport to fix it? Or it comes
- 14:52Speaker 1: up a few times and then it goes away. Right,
- 14:55Speaker 1: it costs money. I mean the league spends money on
- 14:58Speaker 1: other stuff. I just we have a hard time looking
- 15:01Speaker 1: at our world being like, all right, we can go
- 15:03Speaker 1: to the moon, we might go to Mars. We can't
- 15:05Speaker 1: have uniform baseballs.
- 15:08Speaker 2: Japan figured it out, right, The other leagues have figured
- 15:10Speaker 2: it out. It's just Major League Baseball that hasn't figured
- 15:12Speaker 2: it out. Everyone out Japan. You go to Japan, they're like, oh,
- 15:15Speaker 2: the balls are a little bit sticky, and pitchers love them.
- 15:18Speaker 2: They get used to them. They know what they're going
- 15:19Speaker 2: to get every time. So and the fact that baseballs
- 15:22Speaker 2: are still hand stitched in Costa Rica is also amazing.
- 15:25Speaker 2: And you know, they'll never say that they can change
- 15:29Speaker 2: how tight or how loose they're wound, but we all
- 15:33Speaker 2: have our theories on that. So it's just amazing to
- 15:36Speaker 2: me at this day and age and we can't figure
- 15:37Speaker 2: out how to make a uniform across the board. They
- 15:40Speaker 2: used to have practice balls that were softer that teams
- 15:42Speaker 2: would pay pay for for batting practice, so they wouldn't
- 15:45Speaker 2: go as far and they'd save money on baseballs or
- 15:47Speaker 2: batting practice. So it's just crazy in twenty twenty six
- 15:49Speaker 2: that we can't figure this out, especially for the highest
- 15:52Speaker 2: level of baseball in the world.
- 15:54Speaker 4: It's all about money in the end. It's all about money.
- 15:58Speaker 4: It's who is paying what to get what certified and
- 16:02Speaker 4: to allow a certain stipulation. And Major League Baseball they
- 16:07Speaker 4: tested I wish I remember I couldn't find it when
- 16:10Speaker 4: you were talking there, Aj, But it wasn't just our theory.
- 16:15Speaker 4: There was proven evidence that the balls from I think
- 16:20Speaker 4: it was twenty nineteen, correct me if I'm wrong, But
- 16:24Speaker 4: there was proven evidence when they were testing those baseballs,
- 16:27Speaker 4: and it's just a It was a ploy by Major
- 16:29Speaker 4: League Baseball to be able to maybe help offense, maybe
- 16:34Speaker 4: change what was happening with offense without anybody noticing. And
- 16:40Speaker 4: you notice big leaguers noticed, like whoa, how did that
- 16:43Speaker 4: ball go out? WHOA? Why did that ball not go out?
- 16:46Speaker 4: Wait a minute, Certain fields are using it in certain times,
- 16:49Speaker 4: certain humidifiers or turned a different error, like all that stuff.
- 16:54Speaker 4: You change little things with elite athletes and it has
- 16:57Speaker 4: big consequences. But you talk about money if it's about
- 17:00Speaker 4: money that they're not getting this ball like ball uniform
- 17:03Speaker 4: thing done. Injuries cost money. If your picture gets injured.
- 17:08Speaker 4: If you're the Twins ownership and you do care about
- 17:11Speaker 4: winning in your picture's health, you need to be the
- 17:14Speaker 4: first one banging the table saying we need a uniform
- 17:17Speaker 4: baseball because I lost one of my big lead pictures
- 17:19Speaker 4: and that's costing me. However, many millions of dollars Baillyover
- 17:23Speaker 4: is making this year.
- 17:24Speaker 1: Well that's my point, Kratz. I know you mentioned money,
- 17:27Speaker 1: but the money saved if you actually get one or
- 17:32Speaker 1: even one or two by pictures, Yeah, that's it. That's
- 17:35Speaker 1: the whole thing, right, We're not This isn't like a
- 17:37Speaker 1: one hundred million dollar project. This is preventing a few
- 17:41Speaker 1: guys from getting hurt and being worth it. But that
- 17:44Speaker 1: that's the whole arm injury epidemic in general. AJ, is
- 17:48Speaker 1: that whatever you're able to figure out, even if it's
- 17:52Speaker 1: little things or big things right now, like the baseball,
- 17:55Speaker 1: it's going to prevent injuries and save all of baseball
- 18:01Speaker 1: money from guys going on the injured list. Right il,
- 18:05Speaker 1: and we're going to talk more about the injured list
- 18:07Speaker 1: later in a cool story. Iel stints are like the
- 18:11Speaker 1: costliest thing in the game, right I mean teams suddenly
- 18:14Speaker 1: having forty man rosters that become sixty man rosters because
- 18:18Speaker 1: so many guys are hurt.
- 18:20Speaker 3: Yeah, that's what happens. I mean injuries.
- 18:22Speaker 2: Whatever the reason, they want to have bigger training staffs
- 18:26Speaker 2: and bigger this and bigger that. But guys are getting
- 18:29Speaker 2: injured more now than ever. So if it's a little
- 18:30Speaker 2: thing like the baseball, maybe we need to figure that out.
- 18:33Speaker 3: Again.
- 18:33Speaker 2: I don't know, I've never heard of this. I've never
- 18:36Speaker 2: I've heard guys complain about balls. I've never seen a
- 18:38Speaker 2: guy complain out this publicly. But Baiyover has his thoughts
- 18:41Speaker 2: and if he thinks that's what it was, then we
- 18:43Speaker 2: need to be better as a sport and figure out
- 18:45Speaker 2: figure it out how to make it safer for everybody
- 18:48Speaker 2: and make the ball's uniform.
- 18:51Speaker 1: I would love to bring him on. We've had him on.
- 18:54Speaker 1: I would love to just do twenty minutes on this
- 18:57Speaker 1: because he's dealing with it. He's outspoken about it, so
- 19:00Speaker 1: I'd love to just dive in more.
- 19:02Speaker 4: Or even last year, like guys pitching in Sacramento. I
- 19:06Speaker 4: think Correa sat out the last game in Sacramento because
- 19:10Speaker 4: he was like, you could definitely feel it, you can
- 19:13Speaker 4: feel the box was I think he said getting harder
- 19:15Speaker 4: or so. I don't one hundred percent remember the quotes,
- 19:18Speaker 4: but there shouldn't be. And I know it makes players
- 19:22Speaker 4: sound bougie. It makes them, well, we know my high
- 19:24Speaker 4: school team played on a goat drive the other day.
- 19:27Speaker 4: Like these areas who are doing things at the highest level,
- 19:32Speaker 4: and if we don't provide them, we as in like
- 19:35Speaker 4: people who provide the field and the baseballs and the
- 19:37Speaker 4: uniforms and all this stuff with the best quality that
- 19:41Speaker 4: give makes them the safest. We're not putting the best
- 19:43Speaker 4: product out on the field, and we're not really caring
- 19:45Speaker 4: for the player's health and the game's health. In an
- 19:49Speaker 4: overarching statement.
- 19:52Speaker 1: Goat track baseball catching strays. It's like goat yoga. I mean,
- 19:55Speaker 1: come on, dude, you don't like playing baseball with baby
- 19:58Speaker 1: goats running around.
- 20:00Speaker 4: I don't like I don't like watching kids. I don't
- 20:02Speaker 4: play anything anymore. So it's beautiful, but I don't like
- 20:04Speaker 4: watching kids having to go to a baseball game at
- 20:07Speaker 4: a city at a city field where the dirt baselines are.
- 20:12Speaker 4: The entire field is just the baseline. So you got
- 20:14Speaker 4: to lip between first and second, and you got a
- 20:18Speaker 4: lip in the back of first and second. There's no dirt.
- 20:21Speaker 4: There's like like it's high school. That's high school baseball.
- 20:24Speaker 4: We shouldn't have little things like this in the big leagues.
- 20:29Speaker 1: A right, good talk. Let's get to the next topic here.
- 20:31Speaker 1: And that's what he said. And it's Brian Bayo getting optioned,
- 20:37Speaker 1: so aj he got roughed up again yesterday. He's going
- 20:41Speaker 1: down Christian Campbell's down there in Woosted. That's one hundred
- 20:44Speaker 1: and twenty five million bucks and guaranteed money. Hanging out
- 20:47Speaker 1: in the minor leagues to try and get themselves fixed
- 20:50Speaker 1: up right that tweet pointed out by John Martinello, it
- 20:55Speaker 1: actually just sparked a memory of rus Snake Castillo for them,
- 20:59Speaker 1: and now he had to down there. That was different.
- 21:01Speaker 1: There was a formality there. We can talk about another time.
- 21:03Speaker 1: But your thoughts on Bao first, and then he was
- 21:06Speaker 1: asked postgame, of course about starting versus bulcaning reliever, and
- 21:11Speaker 1: he seemed kind of pissed off about the question. We've
- 21:14Speaker 1: certainly smashed that, although I have said BeO different for me,
- 21:17Speaker 1: he's been in the league now for a minute, couldn't
- 21:18Speaker 1: figure out the first inning. You want to try something,
- 21:20Speaker 1: go for it with a baby who just gets called
- 21:22Speaker 1: up to the league. That's different for me. But anyway,
- 21:24Speaker 1: your thoughts on what he's dealing with.
- 21:28Speaker 2: Uh, he was good a couple of years ago, right,
- 21:30Speaker 2: I mean, he was my luck all the time for strikeouts,
- 21:33Speaker 2: and then it's it's like he hasn't improved.
- 21:37Speaker 3: He was really good and then he's kind of leveled
- 21:38Speaker 3: off and if anything, he's declined.
- 21:40Speaker 2: And I don't know if it's an injury thing, if
- 21:42Speaker 2: it's a mental thing, I don't know what it is.
- 21:44Speaker 2: But he hasn't taken the next step. That's why they
- 21:46Speaker 2: gave him that contract. They thought he'd take the next step.
- 21:48Speaker 2: Maybe down in Worcester he can figure it out. Maybe
- 21:50Speaker 2: he's a trade candidate, maybe Christian Campbell. You know, they
- 21:53Speaker 2: did that to Vaughan Grisham after he didn't work out,
- 21:55Speaker 2: So we'll see. But he shouldn't have to answer the
- 21:59Speaker 2: starter vers bulk. He wanted to be a starter and
- 22:02Speaker 2: they made him a bulk reliever and he hasn't pitched
- 22:04Speaker 2: good in either.
- 22:04Speaker 3: So he's in triple it.
- 22:08Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, Beo's everybody's gonna say, this is a
- 22:11Speaker 4: new guys that have strikeouts. If you don't strike out guys,
- 22:15Speaker 4: this is the type of thing that's gonna happen. He's
- 22:17Speaker 4: got to figure it out. He's got to figure out
- 22:19Speaker 4: how to continue to He's not a strikeout pitcher. He
- 22:24Speaker 4: is a contact, weak contact type of pitcher, and it
- 22:28Speaker 4: has not been weak contact this year, and so hopefully
- 22:31Speaker 4: he can figure that out and what that is for him,
- 22:33Speaker 4: probably more pitches down in his zone, probably being able
- 22:36Speaker 4: to locate that change up to both sides of the
- 22:39Speaker 4: plate a little bit better, and getting ahead if he's
- 22:43Speaker 4: not getting ahead and his walk rate is upwards. His
- 22:45Speaker 4: ball rate is up, his walk rate, I don't think
- 22:48Speaker 4: he's actually that much higher, but he's not throwing as
- 22:51Speaker 4: many strikes ahead, so he's always behind in the count.
- 22:55Speaker 4: So he needs to get that get that back, and
- 22:58Speaker 4: he needs to be able to reassess his value or
- 23:02Speaker 4: he's gonna be making a lot of money in Worcester.
- 23:06Speaker 1: Thoughts on the Red Sox development. I don't want to
- 23:11Speaker 1: say issues, but you know the name that pops up
- 23:14Speaker 1: right now is yet Kyle Harrison right there? What happened?
- 23:21Speaker 1: You know? Why did the Brewers take him in? And
- 23:24Speaker 1: he's one of the best pitchers in baseball so far
- 23:26Speaker 1: in the first third of the season. Am I being
- 23:27Speaker 1: too harsh? I'm not. I'm not even trying to like
- 23:30Speaker 1: shit on them right now. I'm just saying this is
- 23:32Speaker 1: a guy homegrown they invest in who has not gotten better.
- 23:37Speaker 1: I'm bringing up a res example of someone who leaves
- 23:40Speaker 1: under their watch and immediately shines with another ball club.
- 23:44Speaker 1: And there's some other examples too, And I know you
- 23:45Speaker 1: can find this aj with any almost any team. You
- 23:48Speaker 1: can cherry pick right and be like, even even the
- 23:51Speaker 1: Rays have guys like Christopher Sanchez.
- 23:53Speaker 4: Hey, what happened.
- 23:53Speaker 1: What did you guys do? Why did you trade him away?
- 23:55Speaker 1: But in the recent history here with Boston is their
- 24:00Speaker 1: concern that the plan they have behind the scenes is
- 24:03Speaker 1: not really working.
- 24:05Speaker 2: Yeah, I think you can look at the position player
- 24:07Speaker 2: side for sure. I mean, I know that Roman Anthony's
- 24:12Speaker 2: a star, but he's been hurt a lot, right Marcelo
- 24:15Speaker 2: Meyer hasn't been great for him, when's a lot. Tristan
- 24:18Speaker 2: Kassas another guy who'shurt all the time. Look at their
- 24:21Speaker 2: roster right now. It is guys who were either developed
- 24:24Speaker 2: or signed from free agency, especially the position player side,
- 24:27Speaker 2: so it hasn't been a great track record the last
- 24:29Speaker 2: few years. And then the pitching side of it. Crochet
- 24:31Speaker 2: was traded for a lot of their guys. Yes, now
- 24:33Speaker 2: they've done a little bit better for me on the
- 24:35Speaker 2: pitching side, but for me, where are the position players
- 24:38Speaker 2: that they've developed. That's a big question. And people are
- 24:40Speaker 2: going to say Roman Anthony, I know he's hurt, but
- 24:43Speaker 2: he did it for what half a year last year,
- 24:45Speaker 2: and he did he was great, But he's going to
- 24:48Speaker 2: have to do it for years on end, especially with
- 24:50Speaker 2: that contract. So it's a question that needs to be asked,
- 24:53Speaker 2: but I don't know if we're going to get an answer.
- 24:56Speaker 4: Obviously, what Kyle Harrison's doing that sucks for the Red Sox.
- 25:00Speaker 4: It's great for the Brewers, but you traded essentially, you
- 25:05Speaker 4: salary dumped Raffie Devers. And Kyle Harrison said it when
- 25:08Speaker 4: he was on the show early this year. You know,
- 25:11Speaker 4: there were some things, you know, I got sent down
- 25:12Speaker 4: to Triple A, and there's some things that I didn't
- 25:15Speaker 4: one hundred percent agree with pitch development, and he goes
- 25:19Speaker 4: to the Brewers and allows them to be them. So
- 25:22Speaker 4: maybe they're getting a little bit of flak right now.
- 25:24Speaker 4: But I think in general, I think the Red Sox
- 25:27Speaker 4: are doing a good job of developing players. I think
- 25:31Speaker 4: they had the players to be there, just not the
- 25:33Speaker 4: players that are going to lead a team to the
- 25:36Speaker 4: playoffs or to the World Series. And I think that's
- 25:38Speaker 4: where the front office needed to supplement other guys in there,
- 25:41Speaker 4: and I think they fell a little short in that sense.
- 25:45Speaker 1: There have been articles about how things are getting lost
- 25:47Speaker 1: in translation at times there right, I mean we joked
- 25:50Speaker 1: about it, Craig Breslow having an interpreter, but could there
- 25:53Speaker 1: be some communication issues with what the team thinks the
- 25:57Speaker 1: players should do right Kyle Harrison. In this case, I'll
- 26:00Speaker 1: bring up one other example I read about this morning. AJ.
- 26:03Speaker 1: Did you hear about Caleb Durban. A couple things just
- 26:05Speaker 1: came out over the last twenty four hours, so he
- 26:08Speaker 1: was off to a super slow start, and it's only
- 26:10Speaker 1: been a week that he's smashing the ball. He is
- 26:13Speaker 1: now before every game driving to Waltham to hit at
- 26:18Speaker 1: a swing facility with a private hitting coach. Watham with
- 26:21Speaker 1: a private hitting coach. It was Carlos narvaias the Red
- 26:25Speaker 1: Sox catcher, one of the catchers there, who said, hey,
- 26:27Speaker 1: you should look into this, and he did, and he's
- 26:29Speaker 1: swinging the bat much better in the past week. A
- 26:31Speaker 1: small sample size, I get it, but I remember that
- 26:34Speaker 1: story came out with key Brian Hayes a few years ago,
- 26:37Speaker 1: and a lot of guys have private hitting coaches. But
- 26:39Speaker 1: this is like the extreme May Before every game, I'm
- 26:41Speaker 1: going to this facility and I'm going to work with
- 26:44Speaker 1: essentially an outside coaching staff because it's not working for
- 26:47Speaker 1: me right now for the first start of the season.
- 26:51Speaker 2: Yeah, I've talked to hitting coaches about this, and a
- 26:54Speaker 2: lot of them are okay with this. They have to
- 26:56Speaker 2: figure out how to work with this. Because guys do
- 26:57Speaker 2: have their own hitting coaches. There was never I mean
- 27:00Speaker 2: playing there was nobody had their own hitting coach. You
- 27:01Speaker 2: had the hitting coach that was on the team you
- 27:03Speaker 2: were playing for, and you talk to him and you
- 27:04Speaker 2: figure it out, and there might have been an assistant
- 27:07Speaker 2: hitting coach. And I remember when we first got an
- 27:09Speaker 2: assistant hitting coach. I'm like, man, what's assistant hitting coach
- 27:12Speaker 2: going to do? But this is what guys do now.
- 27:15Speaker 2: They have their own guy. They believe in certain things.
- 27:18Speaker 2: It's someone they've known for a long time and they trust.
- 27:20Speaker 2: And that's the hardest job of being a pitching a
- 27:22Speaker 2: hitting coach is you got to earn the players trust.
- 27:25Speaker 2: But sometimes players don't give you that opportunity, and then
- 27:28Speaker 2: they go to their own guys. And every time I
- 27:29Speaker 2: talk to every time I talk to hitting coaches, they say,
- 27:32Speaker 2: you know what, guys have their own guy. I need
- 27:34Speaker 2: to talk to them. I need to figure out what
- 27:36Speaker 2: they're telling our guys because I'm around them every day.
- 27:39Speaker 2: What happens when Durbin goes on the road. You can't
- 27:41Speaker 2: go to Waltham that day, so how does he figure
- 27:43Speaker 2: it out that day. So the hitting coach has to
- 27:44Speaker 2: be on the same page. So it's a tough job.
- 27:46Speaker 2: As a hitting coach used to say, the hitting coach
- 27:49Speaker 2: makes his money at the bar after the game, because
- 27:51Speaker 2: everyone go to the bar and we talk about our
- 27:53Speaker 2: bats and have a beer and talk to the hitting
- 27:55Speaker 2: coach and he'd pump you up even if you were
- 27:56Speaker 2: in a slump. But nowadays they go to their own guy,
- 27:59Speaker 2: and you got it. As a hitting you got to
- 28:00Speaker 2: be on that side. You've got to be able to
- 28:02Speaker 2: relate what you see along with what their personal guy says.
- 28:06Speaker 4: Kobe Rasmus got in deep, deep with Tony LaRussa because
- 28:12Speaker 4: he was taking He was going in the morning hitting
- 28:15Speaker 4: at a high school field in Saint Louis with his dad,
- 28:19Speaker 4: his personal hitting coach, and trying to get him right,
- 28:21Speaker 4: and he got hot and he found out about it.
- 28:24Speaker 4: LaRussa found out about it and called the high school
- 28:27Speaker 4: coach and told him to lock the field and not
- 28:29Speaker 4: let him there. So Kobe Rasmus didn't play that long ago.
- 28:33Speaker 4: So for hitting coaches to say, hey, I'm letting my
- 28:36Speaker 4: guy or letting their guy go see their guy, then
- 28:39Speaker 4: you know time has changed, but I remember Kolbe told
- 28:42Speaker 4: me that story and the Razzle Dazzle was not too pleased.
- 28:46Speaker 1: Yeah, times have changed. It's still definitely hurts the egos
- 28:49Speaker 1: when you hear about that, especially at the guy's success.
- 28:51Speaker 1: But ultimately, if you're the team, you should want the
- 28:53Speaker 1: guy to have success. I did want to dive deeper
- 28:56Speaker 1: into the Padres guys for a moment. Aj. I know,
- 28:59Speaker 1: we talked about them for a bit yesterday and then
- 29:01Speaker 1: asked Ken. They've lost nine to ten. They went zero
- 29:05Speaker 1: to six and an eleven day span against the Phillies.
- 29:08Speaker 1: They have the worst offense in baseball, and you add
- 29:10Speaker 1: that all up and I mean they're still not in
- 29:13Speaker 1: a bad spot, but just wondering if it looks like
- 29:17Speaker 1: some spiral or a team that they just matched up
- 29:19Speaker 1: really poorly against in Philadelphia. I mean they had their number.
- 29:25Speaker 3: No, they can't hit. This has always been the thing.
- 29:27Speaker 2: If you have Tattoos, Machado and Jackson Merril all three
- 29:31Speaker 2: not hitting, that's a lot of offense to try to
- 29:33Speaker 2: make up from guys like Gavin Sheets and Miguel and
- 29:35Speaker 2: Duhar and some of the others. So's it's a weird
- 29:39Speaker 2: situation in San Diego. They're still in a good spot
- 29:42Speaker 2: for the postseason. They're pitching really well, they're bullpen as
- 29:45Speaker 2: always again really well. They've gotten huge hits from a
- 29:47Speaker 2: lot of people so far this year, but right now
- 29:50Speaker 2: they need Machado, Tatis and Jackson Merrill to start swinging
- 29:54Speaker 2: the bats.
- 29:57Speaker 4: It's amazing because people are going to bang the drama.
- 30:00Speaker 4: They don't have enough slug well, they don't and do
- 30:03Speaker 4: a lot of other things either. Besides Sheets, they have
- 30:05Speaker 4: no regular everyday player over an eight hundred ops and
- 30:10Speaker 4: Gavin Sheets is just barely over at eight oh six.
- 30:14Speaker 4: So it's one of those things that they clearly made
- 30:18Speaker 4: the roster to be the type of team because we've
- 30:22Speaker 4: seen this for the last few years. And for them,
- 30:25Speaker 4: they have to play really good defense. They have to
- 30:27Speaker 4: shorten games with their bullpen, and unfortunately, when you have
- 30:31Speaker 4: a team that has four or five good guys in
- 30:33Speaker 4: the bullpen, you're gonna win one run games. But you
- 30:37Speaker 4: could actually help and save those guys by scoring a
- 30:41Speaker 4: few more runs and not needing to go to Maury
- 30:44Speaker 4: home Estrada and Adam and Mason Miller on back to
- 30:49Speaker 4: back to back to back nights and you start wearing
- 30:52Speaker 4: those guys down when it could get really bad. In July.
- 31:07Speaker 1: A good week, and I just want to shout out
- 31:08Speaker 1: a lot of the FT Network shows with episodes that
- 31:11Speaker 1: feature some cool guests. Pablo Lopez on Today. We'll show
- 31:14Speaker 1: some of these clips next week, but if you want
- 31:16Speaker 1: the full episode. Pablo Lopez on Twin Cities Territory orl
- 31:19Speaker 1: Hirscheis are talking about christ for Sanchez and rookies Zaki
- 31:22Speaker 1: for that matter. He had some good comments there on
- 31:24Speaker 1: Dodgers Territory. Our Dirt from the Dugout show that is
- 31:27Speaker 1: led by Karl Ravis had Dusty Baker on this past week,
- 31:30Speaker 1: so if you want to hear about what Dusty's up to.
- 31:32Speaker 1: Zach Britton was on Birdland Territory. They asked about the
- 31:35Speaker 1: famous game what was it? Twenty fourteen fourteen?
