- 0:10I'll lived to you, Joel. I promised good name. My name is
- 0:23Steve. I play bass and act like an idiot on stage. Hi,
- 0:28and Menderson, I've been the drummer for about three weeks. Thanks for joining
- 0:36us today, guys. Yeah, that's all right, thanks for having us,
- 0:40Hi pleasure. So for those with Brooklyn Comic guys, first, we'll
- 0:44start off tell us a bit about the band. The band's been around for
- 0:49just just over a year. I started writing music pretty heavily during the Second
- 0:56Lockdown as a as a means of just kind of aiding my mental despair,
- 1:02I suppose, and and yeah, so basically we have one mission statement,
- 1:07and that's to raise awareness for mental health. And yeah, I like to
- 1:11scream into a microphone and that kind of helps. So yeah, Oh,
- 1:18you recently premiered your latest single, Charlie's Song, So I know it hasn't
- 1:22been that long, but how's the earlier reception being for it. It's been
- 1:25really good so far. Yeah, we've had a lot of a lot of
- 1:27love from it. So yeah, we're just going to keep pumping it and
- 1:32yeah, people hopefully keep enjoying it. So tell us a bit more about
- 1:37the song from a musical point of view and what you were going for with
- 1:38it, well, I was listening to like a lot of balanced composure,
- 1:44a lot of movements, that kind of thing at the time that I was
- 1:47writing Charlie song and a couple of other songs are going to be coming out
- 1:49this year, and musically, I just wanted something that would really build as
- 1:59as the song kind of just progressed too in a sense, kind of like
- 2:04symbolize exactly what the song's content is about, which is like being in a
- 2:10situation where you're in a relationship with someone who has addictive qualities or is addicted
- 2:20to something, and you're trying to help that person out, but you see
- 2:25that's at the end of your own the detriment, sorry, the detriment of
- 2:29your own mental health, so you need to take a step away. So
- 2:34yeah, that's basically what the song is about and what I was kind of
- 2:37going with musical as well. It comes with a pretty cool video that showcases
- 2:40the band playing in a room with two figures in white sheets playing chess in
- 2:45front of your life. What's going on there? I'm trying to figure it
- 2:47out, but I had no idea. Basically, like the ghosts are like
- 2:52a symbol forearm for the addiction that you might you might face, and they're
- 3:02basically battling it out while we're while we're playing the song like around them.
- 3:07So there's always going to be that, uh, that that ghost that you've
- 3:13got in your head or uh, that's always around and it's kind of your
- 3:20opportunity whether or not you want to you want to fight against it or with
- 3:23it. So yeah, you're saying that songs are basically about addictions and the
- 3:27repercussions of it, and you're also think a lot about mental health. So
- 3:30are they have sort of things that focused to the band? Like, is
- 3:34that like basically a common theme running through all your music heavily? Men?
- 3:38Mental health is is is a very heavy theme. Every every song that we've
- 3:43written is about mental health in some way, whether that be through circumstance or
- 3:53like through indoctrination, Like there's different ways of dealing with trauma that you've grown
- 3:58up with. So yeah, that's a it's a heavy focus on the band.
- 4:02And is Charlie's song a standalone song or if you're part of a bigger
- 4:06picture album or EP picture and be part of a three track that we've got
- 4:13that. We're just pushing pushing out sporadically throughout this year, so we've got
- 4:19that one plus two more for the rest of the year. I do want
- 4:23to tell us a bit more about the other three songs or do you want
- 4:25to leave that surprise when they come out? Oh, like, now we're
- 4:30gonna have to really leave it in a surprise. We've got an acoustic track
- 4:32that's coming out after this, which is called night Drive, and it's basically
- 4:42very very similar, very similar concepts to how Booklyn's been in the past as
- 4:46far as mental health is concerned. This song is about coming to terms with
- 4:53the way that you that you're coping through a three your mental health and whether
- 4:57or not that's a beneficial way being able to cope, or whether that's a
- 5:04more of a more of a cover up or more of a distraction from what
- 5:10you're trying to deal with. And then we have skin Deep, and skin
- 5:14Deep is to put it easily enough, it's about a break up, but
- 5:20yeah, it's there's a lot more involved with it, a lot of introspection
- 5:25coming to terms with even though you're not at fault with a breakup, what
- 5:29can you do to be a better person. I'm moving forward that kind of
- 5:32thing. So, yeah, how Everson, you've been really quiet there,
- 5:36mate. So you're the new the new card in the pack, only been
- 5:39there three weeks. Introduces yourself and tell us what you bring to Brooklyn Comics.
- 5:45I lay drums, It's not it now. I've known Jane for like
- 5:55five years at this point. I used to do music lessons at the place
- 5:59that he taught her, and I just run into him at them all a
- 6:02couple of months ago and it was like, I want you, I want
- 6:05you to play drums for my band. So I was in another band before
- 6:11this, and that you know, all fell to pieces. So I was
- 6:15really excited to get with these guys and start jamming with Brooklyn because this kind
- 6:20of music has always been like the best kind of music in my heart and
- 6:25what I've always listened to since I was young. Like I've got my chemical
- 6:28romance shot on, and it's a really good opportunity for me to like step
- 6:32back into the music industry and have a bit more of a professional go other
- 6:36things. So very well, very excited. Where are the professionals? What
- 6:42are you talking about? Professional? From my last yeah, loosely put guys
- 6:53like your sound. It's got a bit of a blending of hardcore and emo
- 6:56there most other things. So where does that come from? It's not like
- 7:00not a likely pairing. Oh, it comes from a range of like influences
- 7:05that I've grown up kind of listening to, anything from saying like my Romance
- 7:10to bands like The Used and Balancing Composure. So the yeah, the elements
- 7:17are screaming and singing and hardcore elements just based around just just music that I've
- 7:23kind of just grown up listening to and get heavily influenced even now. Yeah,
- 7:29Yeah, it's an unlikely blend where some stuff, you know, it
- 7:32comes across very pop punk and then just like it goes straight into like a
- 7:35heavy rule scream. But it's it seems to work on that point, Like
- 7:44they are pretty much opposing genre. So how hard is like in the writing
- 7:46and the creative stage, how hard is it to get a balanced right?
- 7:49Like how do you know when you've gone too far with one and maybe not
- 7:53far enough with another? Like trial and error to put it, like,
- 8:01We've got some real like brutal songs, especially in our LASTP I got a
- 8:05couple of like really brutal songs, which yeah, in context they work well.
- 8:09But then like for example, playing live, uh make it make it
- 8:16quite diversive. I suppose towards towards the crowd, depending on the kind of
- 8:22crowd that we're playing, Like where if we're playing a show with like that's
- 8:24more of a pop punk show, you'll notice that people are a little bit
- 8:28kind of taken back from the heavy elements, and then they kind of come
- 8:33back when we have like the pop punk chorus or a song like Melancholy,
- 8:37which is like yeah, very very pop punk. So yeah, speaking of
- 8:41shows, if you've got anything coming up that you want to push, oh
- 8:43we do, we do. We've got an Emo night in Woongong. La
- 8:48La LA's in Woongong next Saturday, the twenty third, and we'll be playing
- 8:54with with the Best Season and Headstrong, So that's going to be an awesome
- 9:00night. So I'll wait for that one. And Lars is such a great
- 9:05venue as well, so we're really looking forward to playing there again. Well
- 9:07where can people find out more information? I'll get tickets? Oh yeah,
- 9:11they can just go to our Instagram, go to our link tree. The
- 9:15tickets are there, or they can go on the yours and ours Instagram or
- 9:20website or even ampm Emo Night. They can go on there and find the
- 9:24tickets there as well. Yeah, well, thanks very much for your time,
- 9:28guys. The song Charlie's song is out now and he's a crack a
- 9:31very very different piecing of songs, but it works well. Guys. So
