- 2:00little bit later on, Tim Brady from the Charleston Convention and Visitors Bureau is
- 2:02going to be joining us in studio. You know, there was the big
- 2:06announcement was made last week about this. Basically the capital city is becoming the
- 2:09epicenter of bicycling, I mean kind of leading into the Olympics, and it's
- 2:16really a big deal for Charleston and Tim Brady's going to talk about that a
- 2:20little bit later on. Plus, last week he announced he is running for
- 2:23Secretary of State and he announced he's changing parties. Doug Scaff, former State
- 2:28Senator House of Delegates member, mister Scaff, will be in studio this morning
- 2:30to talk about his party change from Democrat to a Republican and about his what
- 2:35do you hopes will be his new role as Secretary of States for the great
- 2:38sit of West Virginia. That's coming up a little bit later on as well.
- 2:40Plus, as always, your phone calls and texts are welcome. It
- 2:44is Monday, which means we do a thing we call Mayor Monday, and
- 2:47every Monday we bringing a different mayor from here in the Canal Valley surrounding areas.
- 2:52Talk about things going on in their particular town this week, I'm proud
- 2:55to welcome in the mayor of the city of PoCA, West Virginia, William
- 2:59Wimpy Jones. Good morning, sir, how are you. How are you
- 3:01doing today? Thank you for being here, appreciate it. And you brought
- 3:06your I promised I wouldn't put her on the air, but you brought your
- 3:07lovely wife here with you too. We will not mention her one more time,
- 3:10I promise, thank you. We'll just put her back in the corner
- 3:13over there. Okay, Actually, I think she probably keeps you in the
- 3:15corner more than anybody, probably more than you do her. Well, it's
- 3:20just spoken like a typical married gap. So thanks for being here. You
- 3:23folks are just a couple of weeks removed from your Fall Festival. How did
- 3:27everything go there, the polk? The Fall Fest went great this year.
- 3:30We had a lot more fenders and crafters. Also, I think part of
- 3:36a lot more citizens came in to see. I mean, we was talking
- 3:40to death. I mean it really got a little bit bigger this year.
- 3:43Yeah, that's good. It's always a big event, but it gets it's
- 3:46getting even bigger or this paste one I understand the pictures I saw and what
- 3:51I talked to people that went it was a whole lot bigger. What's uh,
- 3:53we got new in the in the town, in the land of the
- 3:55dots. What do you got? Well, we finally did all rive and
- 3:59cutting open for the Poka Fall or the Poka Plaza. Of course, we've
- 4:04got the supermarket there now, Poka Supermarket, which we needed it and finally
- 4:09got everything up and running. It's doing good. We also got new businesses
- 4:13in which is the Valley Cakes Cafe and catering. She's at location across from
- 4:19Eddie's Tars Center there in Poka. She'd be moving down to the new Clausea
- 4:25here once her area is completed, which is going to be at about I
- 4:30think around seven thousand square feet area compared to what she's got now. And
- 4:35I've actually had her food before. It's really good stuff. That is good
- 4:41dessert, good food. You'd happen to bring any with you. Did you
- 4:43know they want to open the day? I guess that's you're the mayor.
- 4:47You're the mayor, tell them to open, well, I usually do.
- 4:50Don't listen. Okay, let's talk about this supermarket now. I mean it
- 4:57had set you know vacant where there was a market there went out of I
- 5:00guess it went out of business. And uh you had you had some local
- 5:02entrepreneurs that stepped up and made this happen for the community. Talk about that.
- 5:06Yes, the person stepped up was Kirk Hick and Bottom who owns Putt
- 5:12and Holding. We really appreciate everything he has done for our town. Also
- 5:18the Puttman Development Authority, uh, which would be Morgan and Ashley. As
- 5:29far as with the chambers, they all helped in getting everything set up,
- 5:32getting it run and stuff. And the new guy came in, the owner
- 5:38which is mister Jamison. I think that's how he say his last name.
- 5:42But he's understanding. It's doing real good. One thing about it. You
- 5:46can get checked out by somebody. You don't have to do self check.
- 5:49Actually, a month or so ago, my wife and I a Saturday decided
- 5:53to drive over there. Of course, the hick and botha family I know
- 5:56them very well, and we went over there and that's one of the things
- 5:58we remarked to. And this is a big old, big old supermarket.
- 6:00I mean you know the area and what was there before it was before it
- 6:04was uh it was food fair the food Fair. Yeah, okay, the
- 6:08name escaped me there from it, so it was food Fair. So this
- 6:10is a major supermarket and just another one, you know sometimes, you know,
- 6:15we have we got an abundance of supermarkets in the area, but there
- 6:17really wasn't one in PoCA, I mean not at all. I mean you
- 6:20had inconvenience stores and so on and so forth, but she didn't really have.
- 6:24And that's a full on grocery store with a great deli and everything.
- 6:28And I like about it too. If you see something that they don't have,
- 6:31you can talk to Brittany, who is the manager, and they put
- 6:34it on the list and try to get it in for you. A lot
- 6:38of places don't do that right, right, but they helped real a lot.
- 6:42I think Poka is one of the one of the great small towns in
- 6:46West Virginia. Any time I've ever had any dealings with anybody from PoCA,
- 6:48and I lived kind of, you know, on the other end of the
- 6:50county. But great people, great businesses, great events, just just a
- 6:58great place to be all around. What is it to make Pocus so special
- 7:00to you? Mayor? I think it's called where small town and everybody knows
- 7:03everybody, and if somebody needs help, there's always someone there to lean in
- 7:08a hand to help them. Yeah, it's just it's just a neat place
- 7:14to me. Have you lived in Poker your whole line raised down, Black
- 7:17Betsy and okay, you know we've been in post five miles away something like
- 7:21that. Yep, yeah, yeah, But I went to school at Poker,
- 7:26graduated Poka High School, kept up my hometown. Did you hear last
- 7:30week? I think it was the North Carolina State game. I was watching.
- 7:32I'm a big herd guy and I was watching Marshall North Carolina State,
- 7:36and the announcers made reference to Poka talking about the pain Boys, you know,
- 7:41and and the color commentator and I don't remember who it was. A
- 7:44color commentator even said do you know the nickname of their school is the Dots,
- 7:47And they talked about that. Hey, any take any kind of publicity
- 7:51you can get, right, that's right. The mask Off is one of
- 7:55a kind. It is certainly for sure. It's getting national attention. There
- 7:59again, we're talking with Mayor Whippy Jones from the town of Punk. All
- 8:01right. I got to ask you where'd the nickname come from? It came
- 8:05from coach Darby and his wife Dory in nineteen sixty five eating cheeseburger. I
- 8:11was gonna say, was there a cheeseburger tie in there? Because people that
- 8:13are, you know, the the iconic whimpy character from the Popeye cartoons.
- 8:18I didn't know if that was if that was the reason why that they called
- 8:22you that, They nicknamed me that, and it just kind of grow,
- 8:26growed and stuck like glue. I guess, I guess, well, you
- 8:28know, there's I guess there's worse things to be called them, whippy.
- 8:31What do you what else you got coming up in the town. Well,
- 8:33we got glad that CMC Primary Care open up in the New Clauset also,
- 8:39and you got the looking Glass Boutique which is in there. We got another
- 8:43business which is called the AI t X, which mister Hickenball and owns ad
- 8:50it's a transport service. And then we got a construction company name, uh
- 8:54excuse me, which is King's Quality Constructing, construct Contracting. I get to
- 9:01hear beating with their upstairs and they're the one that doing most of the work
- 9:05in town there for mister hick and Bottom. So you know, a lot
- 9:09of exciting things going on. Of course, this time of year, you
- 9:11know, we started thinking about it's one after another. You got Halloween followed
- 9:16by Thanksgiving and Christmas. Anything big going on in the town for the time
- 9:18around Halloween. Well, uh, we're just normal host that we don't you
- 9:24know, really do something real big the kids and stuff, you know,
- 9:28goes around and stuff. This year we're not We don't have a trunk of
- 9:33treat because we feel it's pretty safe in the area of Coaurse. We've got
- 9:37policemens that watches the kids when they're out on Halloween. Okay, and uh,
- 9:43Christmas it's always a big deal. Yeah, with your parade and whatnot.
- 9:48Well, we're hoping to have parayed this year. Been people called being
- 9:50asked about it, and I'm going to talk to counsel about it. And
- 9:54also every year we always do the Sanna and Missus calls at the gazebo and
- 10:00one nighttime and the Poka show car always sings for us. They're there singing
- 10:05Christmas songs and stuff. So it'll be good and have hot chocolate and cookies
- 10:09for the kids. If before we let you go, mayor if if you
- 10:13know as a mayor of a small town, you know you end up having
- 10:16to be the big cheerleader for the town and nobody can. I've you know,
- 10:20it was just talking to you in the green room there you're and your
- 10:22wife and I and I can tell that you love your town. What is
- 10:26it about PoCA? Kind of touched on a little bit earlier, But if
- 10:28you had a message right now, we've got all kinds of people moving into
- 10:31the area, I mean with new core and everything. A lot of them
- 10:35are choosing to live in Putnham County. Yes, what would your selling point
- 10:37be to people that are thinking about possibly moving into the area. What is
- 10:41it that makes Poka the place that people need to be right now? Mayor?
- 10:45I think it's a friendliness of our town or a small town. And
- 10:50but yeah, everybody, like I said, everybody's real friendly and everything,
- 10:52and it's a clean area. Uh, we got good police officers that As
- 10:58far as our crime rate, it's very very low. And I don't know,
- 11:05it's just it's one of a kind. It is all right. Well,
- 11:09Mayor, I t I appreciate you taking time at your schedule to be
- 11:11here with us today. We'll have you on again. Don't let this be
- 11:13the last time you do. Mayor Monday. We'll have you on again because
- 11:16I love love to bring people into talking about their towns. And you've got
- 11:18a great town there in Poker and we'll we'll have you back on again soon.

- 14:50a Republican after being a Democrat, and he's going to explain that decision of
- 14:54why he's running for Secretary of State. Coming up a little bit later on.
- 14:56Tim Brady though from the Charleston Convention Visitors Bureau joins us. Now,
- 15:01Tim, good morning, How are you good, Dave? How are you,
- 15:03brother? I'm fine, Thank you for being here. Big announcement last
- 15:07week, Charleston about to become the epicenter I'm told for bicycling over the next
- 15:11few years. Talk about them. Yeah. Beginning next year in twenty twenty
- 15:16four, Charleston will be the host for USA Cycling's Professional Road National Championships.
- 15:22That's going to be May fifteenth through the nineteenth here in the capital city.
- 15:26And we're excited because we have this event now for five years. We'll have
- 15:31it twenty twenty four through twenty twenty eight. And what's significant about that,
- 15:35Dave, is that it gets us two Olympic cycles. So cyclists that are
- 15:39here competing in May of twenty four, there are qualification elements. The winner
- 15:46of this event in Charleston will be seen cycling in Paris in the twenty twenty
- 15:52four Olympics. And we'll get that same situation again in twenty twenty eight.
- 15:56So that five year commitment for US is huge because it gets us those two
- 16:00Olympic cycles. And this is I mean, you know these big events are
- 16:03are you know, like a one off when you come in. Like you
- 16:06said, Tim, this is not going to be just a one off.
- 16:07This is not just a single big event. This is a major, major
- 16:12deal for Charleston. Yeah, it's a huge valley. Yeah, it's a
- 16:15huge deal for the whole metro valley. And here's why, you know,
- 16:19we we've hosted some big things this summer. We've hosted in partnership with USA
- 16:22Table Tennis, they're the International Table Tennis Federation, pan Am Games, Junior
- 16:27pan Am Games. We had athletes from twenty plus countries here. In September,
- 16:33we hosted in partnership with USA Volleyball, Men's Continental Championships, Men's Olympic
- 16:37teams from all over North America, Central America, and the Caribbean we're here.
- 16:41And those are of great events. They're inside the coliseum. They're tough
- 16:45to see this unless you buy a ticket. Right, this is going to
- 16:48encompass the entire city of Charleston. There's three courses. There's a road course,
- 16:52that we'll have some elevation to it, so we'll be up and down
- 16:55some of the hills and throughout town. The second course will be a time
- 16:57trial course, most likely along the boulevard because it has to be flat,
- 17:03so out and back on the boulevard multiple times. And then the third component
- 17:06is what's called a criteria, and that's just a tight little one mile loop
- 17:10around town, around the center of the city, over and over and over
- 17:12and over again. So there are lots of spectator opportunities that are free.
- 17:17The community can come out, and I've watched videos of this event it's been
- 17:21in Knoxville for the last three years, just enormous crowds. If you've ever
- 17:25watched the Tour de France on TV, I have this vision of people lining
- 17:30the walkway Upbridge Road, watching cyclists climb Bridge Road as a part of this
- 17:36competition. Start finish line is going to be in front of the Sheraton by
- 17:38four points and across from Hadad Riverfront Park. It's going to be a real
- 17:42party, festival style atmosphere. There's just so much opportunity in the city for
- 17:48this event, and it's going to be so highly visible and what's the time
- 17:53frame we're looking at for this, so it's May fifteenth through the nineteenth of
- 17:56next year, and they'll set the dates for twenty five after that. The
- 18:00other thing that I want to make sure that I mentioned a couple of things.
- 18:03One, it's going to take some volunteer effort. So we are going
- 18:07to do some volunteer recruitment and I'll make sure to pass all of that information
- 18:11along to you and you can help us spread the word on volunteers. For
- 18:15now, if you want to go to Charleston WV dot com and just scroll
- 18:18down, there's a big heading for USA Cycling. If you click on that,
- 18:21it'll take you to the USA Cycling event landing page and there's volunteer sign
- 18:25up information there. But we've also had a lot of participation from the community
- 18:29and just getting to this point, you know, we put together a really
- 18:30great local organizing committee spearheaded by some guys like Ted Armbreckt and Todd Goldman,
- 18:37Eric Showalter, Bradley Schmaltz, Jacob Vetti, Greg Cook, and some of
- 18:42these guys were involved in the Old Kmart Classic. If folks have some historical
- 18:47memory of that, it's been a couple of decades but it used to be
- 18:49a big bite grace here in the city. So I just want to make
- 18:52sure I thank those guys too, because they really helped us push this across
- 18:56the finish line and get this event in the city. But none of it
- 19:00would have been possible without the the help, the assistance, and the involvement
- 19:04of the City of Charleston and specifically Marry Me Goodwin, because uh, this
- 19:08is going to involve a lot of street closure. The city is a big
- 19:11partner in this, and uh, there's absolutely zero chance this event would be
- 19:15coming to Charleston if Mayor Goodwin had not been so enthusiastic about welcoming them to
- 19:19the city. Now you talk about the need for volunteers as we get closer,
- 19:22but logistically speaking, otherwise, this is gonna be take a lot to
- 19:26pull this off. To him, it is, and I'm going to tell
- 19:27people now some streets are gonna be closed. Get ready. It may take
- 19:33you a few more minutes to get to work a couple of mornings. We're
- 19:36going to close some streets. But the nice thing about this is, generally
- 19:40speaking, especially in the road courses, the rider's kind of ride impacts so
- 19:42a lot of the street closure will just be rolling. It won't be shut
- 19:45down for like hours and hours and hours on end. But but yeah,
- 19:49I'm gonna give you guys a heads up. It might inconvenience you for a
- 19:53couple of days, and but we're all gonna all gonna get through it together.
- 19:57So from their perspective, why Charleston A couple of things. One,
- 20:03and I mean this sincerely, the enthusiastic response of the city, because it
- 20:06does take a lot of resources to get this done, and specifically, you
- 20:11have to be willing to close some streets. And as I told them when
- 20:14they came in, I said, listen, we're the kings of closing streets
- 20:18in Charlestown. But also all jokes aside the geography and the topography, you
- 20:23know a lot of opportunity for both climbing and flat level riding all within the
- 20:27city limits of Charleston. When you think about you know, Bridge Road and
- 20:30Loudon Heights on the other side of the river, You've got you know,
- 20:33Garrison and Watson, some of the stuff on the west side that I think
- 20:37will be incorporated as well. But then you've also got a lot of flat
- 20:40land. So we offered that perfect combination of rise and fall and flat level
- 20:45riding all truly, and I think it's probably going to be the first time
- 20:49in a long time they've been able to do everything within the city limits of
- 20:53one municipality, because even when they were at Knoxville, they had to take
- 20:56their time trials out to oak Ridge, which is like forty five minutes away,
- 21:00because they couldn't get the flat length of the run. So for Charleston,
- 21:03it was an ideal situation because they could get it all in one city.

- 21:27Died net for Pinnacle Consultants because what you don't know can hurt you. So
- 21:33just how big tim potentially could this be, not only for Charleston, but
- 21:37for the entire region. Well, it's gonna be big for the entire region
- 21:42in a couple of ways. You know, we're not one hundred percent sure
- 21:45how many riders we're expecting, but in excess of two hundred competitors. But
- 21:52they all travel with teams, So one cyclist is probably going to bring at
- 21:56minimum five or six people with them unless they have bike mechanics and nutrition is
- 22:00and I mean these are pros, right, so they're traveling with large teams.
- 22:03Also, you know, it's gonna be great for the hotel community because
- 22:06we're going to welcome in all not only all of those riders and their teams,
- 22:10but also volunteers. It's also going to be good for the airbnb community
- 22:14because some of the larger team riders are going to look for houses to stay
- 22:17in so that they can put all of their people together in a more private
- 22:21sort of setting. So it's going to be good for the hotels, it's
- 22:22going to be good for the airbnbs. And anytime you bring this number of
- 22:26people to town, you know it's going to be good for the restaurant community,
- 22:29the retail community. So you know, I'm trying to shy away from
- 22:33putting some type of like expected number on the economic impact. I can just
- 22:37look you in the eye and say this is gonna be big, and it's
- 22:38gonna be big for five years in a row. I'm gonna take a break
- 22:41and kind of get away from the cycling just from when we'll get back to
- 22:45it. You mentioned something there that kind of put a little idea in my
- 22:47head. That's about airbnbs in the Charleston area. You know, these things
- 22:49have been big nationwide for some time. I don't know that people realize how
- 22:56many Airbnbs that there are, not only in Charleston but the entire metro valley.
- 22:59There a lot of them out there. Team yeah, there are.
- 23:00It's there's a robust airbnb community here in Charleston. People are investing in their
- 23:07properties and you know, we do our It's a little bit difficult with a
- 23:11hotel. You know, there's a Marriott there and there's you know, three
- 23:14hundred plus rooms and it's visible and you see it. With Airbnb, sometimes
- 23:18it's tougher for us to get our hands around that. But if you go
- 23:21to our website Charleston WV dot com and scroll down on the lodging page,
- 23:25there is a link to the directly to airbnbs in Charleston, and there's way
- 23:30more than people realize. And that feeds our economy as well, and it
- 23:33feeds our budget because they collect the same hotel motel tax that hotels do,
- 23:38so it comes back to us. But when you look at Charleston, you
- 23:41know, through Putnam County into Barbersville and Huntington, through this metro Valley corridor,
- 23:47there are way more airbnbs then you might realize. Yeah, and I
- 23:52know a couple of people that travel for work. I mean it's been like,
- 23:56you know, three hundred, three hundred and thirty days a year out
- 23:57on the road and that's all they'll stay in. And with all due respect
- 24:02to our hotel chains, which do a great job, this is kind of
- 24:04what they do. I mean they that they actually prefer them, and to
- 24:07me, that's the beauty of the airbnbs. And you know, we represent
- 24:11the hotel community, but we also do represent the airbnb community because they're part
- 24:15of the overall sort of lodging landscape of the city. I'm a hotel guy.
- 24:19I want to stay in a hotel where it's clean. I know I'm
- 24:22gonna get room service every day and my you know, clean towns and all
- 24:26that stuff. Some people prefer that Airbnb experience, so for us, it's
- 24:29nice that we're able to offer both in the city of Charlestown. Yeah,
- 24:32exactly. You know, Tim, it's just been one big thing after another
- 24:36over the last couple of months here in the capital city and the surrounding areas.
- 24:40Tired day. Well, I mean, we just came off a two
- 24:41day music festival at Go Mark Ballplay the I Beat, and let's also talk
- 24:45about speaking the concerts. That's kind of where I was going to go with
- 24:48that. You just had some major you know, Ringo and Jelly Roll,
- 24:51Lauren Daego, Lana del Rey, as you mentioned, the down in Dirty
- 24:53music festival, get Trans Siberian Orchestra covered up. I've been a lot of
- 24:57entertainment going on in Charleston late man, just crushing it. And that's a
- 25:02credit to Patrick Lahey and his team at the Colisseum and Convention Center. Andy
- 25:07Sheha at Gomart Ballpark is a great partner as well. But you know,
- 25:11they're just they're doing a great job of not only booking a diverse array of
- 25:15acts. I mean, when you think about what you just said, just
- 25:18in one week you went Jelly Roll, Lauren Daego, Lana del Rey,
- 25:22and then the next week you follow that up with Ringo Star. I mean
- 25:25that runs the gamut from you know, country to contemporary Christian pop, classic
- 25:30rock, A diverse array of acts, and we're not even talking about the
- 25:33stuff going on at the Municipal Auditorium in that same time, like RuPaul's drag
- 25:37Race and some of the fun stuff over there. A diverse array of acts
- 25:41doing a great job of marketing, and people are are hungry and desirous for
- 25:45quality entertainment options and they're coming out and we're just setting record after record at
- 25:52the Colisseum and Convention Center. And that's a testament to the team that they've
- 25:55assembled over there. Can I give you a couple of texts because you have
- 25:57a couple of text with question since here one says the city and the CV
- 26:02be very quick to release economic impact numbers for Regatta, It's been six weeks
- 26:07no numbers have been released for Multifest. Is that something that you are a
- 26:11part of. Yeah, So I've I've spoken with with Tamra you Banks,
- 26:15the executive director of Multifest, and we had hoped to have her Economic Impact
- 26:19report ready last week. We work with a company called Zartico that provides visitor
- 26:25analytics, and they're just a little backed up, I guess because it's the
- 26:29summer fall season. But we anticipate having those numbers. I'd hope to have
- 26:32them by Friday. We anticipate having those numbers this week, and I think
- 26:34you're going to hear multifest economic impact numbers probably in the next in the next
- 26:41few days. We're just waiting on some very important data that helps us compile
- 26:47those numbers. And one other text before we let you go about the potholes.
- 26:51There are plans to fill the potholes. That's the text. So out
- 26:53there with your shovel, tam I can. I can tell you that USA
- 26:56Cycling is coming in in a couple of weeks to do a final ride around
- 27:00and finalize the roots. And we've already had conversation with the city about making
- 27:04sure that the paving schedule has set such that we provide not only a quality
- 27:12course for these guys as far as you know rise and fall and flat cycling
- 27:17surface, but also smooth surface. So we're gonna we're gonna turn the grates
- 27:22the right way and we're gonna fill the potholes. Sounds good. Tim.
- 27:26I know we've got a lot of things going on in addition to this,
- 27:29but as we get into the holiday season, it's like I was talking to
- 27:30Bear Jones in the last segment, So we'll have you back on again.
- 27:33Sim It's good stuff for Charleston, man and the surrounding areas. I appreciate
- 27:36it, and David, I just appreciate you giving us a platform to come
- 27:38in and talk to folks about what's happening. You know, we're excited about

- 31:56leader, We can now call him for a Democrat, now Republican, and
- 31:59now candidate for West Virginia Secretary of State. Doug's scaff is here, Douglas,
- 32:02Good morning, Welcome to the Chip. Good morning, Dave. Happy
- 32:05Monday to you. Happy Monday. As if there is such a thing,
- 32:08well that's might have been, Doug, the worst kept cigarette in the world.
- 32:10The party switch and the run for secretary of State. Now, you
- 32:14pretty much explained it all on Hoppy last Thursday, But just in case anyone
- 32:17may have missed it, let's start with the party change. Now, you
- 32:21were actually a Republican before you were a Democrat. A lot of people perhaps
- 32:25did not know that. Yeah, back in my college days, I was
- 32:28a Republican and actually won my first race and the House of Delegates in Bond
- 32:31County, a very democratic area as a republic and it still is. I
- 32:35mean primarily that I won my first race in the House for the House of
- 32:38Delegates as a Republican up there. So why the change now, Doug?
- 32:42You know, I left the state guy a chance to come back and be
- 32:44with my family and be with my parents and get here and work here and
- 32:47raise a raise, you know, my kids. It's just the bottom line
- 32:52is the party left me. The Party's left so many people West Virginians.
- 32:54I'm not the first and I won't be the last. The bottom line is,
- 32:58we just can't relate to the national democratic scene and what's going on over
- 33:01there. It's just not us. It doesn't identify us as West Virginians.
- 33:05You look at the voter registrations you talk about in twenty twenty one, you
- 33:07know how Republicans kind of took over the majority and our population from two thousand
- 33:13and twenty ten and twenty twenty it kept declining. So it wasn't because one
- 33:17hundred and fifty thousand Republicans, like I said this before, moved to West
- 33:20Virginia. You know, it was those same registered voters whose values stayed the
- 33:24same. They just happened to be registered Democrats who finally got so fed up,
- 33:29couldn't relate, felt like the party left them, so they switched their
- 33:30party affiliation to Republican because it represented their values. And so I, like
- 33:36many other West Virginians, switched my party affiliation and fill them home. So
- 33:42why did it take you to now to do that though, Because I mean
- 33:44this change that has been going on, you know, for some time.
- 33:49And as you said, you're not the first, you won't be the last
- 33:51of people that have changed their party. They felt the national Party didn't identify
- 33:53with their particular values and whatever. But why did it take till now?
- 33:58I mean why? Why? It's the real question. You know, there
- 34:00was so much, There was a it was a big tent. Republicans have
- 34:02a big tent. The Democrats had a big tent, you know, that
- 34:05big ten of Democrats. There was these blue dog these these moderate conservative Democrats
- 34:09for so long. That's that's shrinking. Those are the one switching parties.
- 34:14And I thought I could, I could, I could get in there,
- 34:15I could work together, I could bring people together, help bring it more
- 34:19towards the middle. But that's just not happening. It's not happening. I
- 34:22tried to bring the Democratic Party back towards the middle, to alast to reflect
- 34:25the true West Virginia values, but instead it kept going the other way,
- 34:30It kept going towards the fo Do you think that is? Why do you
- 34:31think that is here in West Virginia? Is it because of the national thing
- 34:36and that they're just trying to identify I do I think you have the fringe
- 34:37in both parties. Let's be honest. You have the fringe on both sides.
- 34:40You have the fringe on the right, you have the fringe on the
- 34:43left, and it's unfortunate that both party chairs feel like they have to continue
- 34:45to cater to the fringe. You know, West Virginians just want to work
- 34:50with West Virginians. We get things done. Forget about it. I mean,
- 34:52you see what's going on in DC right now. We don't even have
- 34:54a speaker. We don't even have a speaker right now because we can't get
- 34:58that within that whole party. It should be proud that the party is in
- 35:00control. You know, it's Raley behind one person and let's move. Instead,
- 35:04we're fighting amongst ourselves. That's what happened with the Democratic Party. It
- 35:07got so big here in West Virginia that these different facets broke apart and they
- 35:09tore each other down, you know, in the Republican Party, you know
- 35:12in DC, that's what's happening. Now. What kind of Republican is Doug
- 35:15scaff Because as you said, there are different types of Republicans. There are
- 35:20different types of Democrats too, But what kind of Republican will Doug scff?
- 35:22Here's a great question. You know, I've always been a pro pro business,
- 35:25pro coal, pro gas, pro energy type of guy. I've been
- 35:30probably been pro life. I was raised my whole life pro life. Now
- 35:31there's some votes out there, people say, oh, you've got different votes
- 35:34out there. Listen, I am who I am. I vote for the
- 35:36issue. I'm an issue oriented person. I'm not beholder to anyone or anything
- 35:39or any organization. Bottom line is I do what's right for the majority of
- 35:43West Virginians. Majority of West Virginians ask you to go out and represent them.
- 35:45That's what you should be. That's what a good leader does. My
- 35:49values have never changed. I've always been there. I've been fighting for the
- 35:52coal miners, the coal companies, the coal workers that call everything has to
- 35:54do with coal, to keep our energy going, to keep our lights on.
- 35:57I've been fighting for the gas industry, which is the future we need
- 35:59to be in energy independent. I've always been that way, and sometimes it
- 36:01made it tough, made it tough within the Democratic Party to go speak my
- 36:05mind on how I felt about certain projects. I'm a pro business guy.
- 36:07My track record small businesses, large businesses. I have businesses with five employees
- 36:12and businesses with over two hundred employees. I love making people and their families
- 36:16successful, helping people get back on their feet. Give them a hand up,
- 36:21not a handout. That's what I'm all about. That's what my values
- 36:22is. I want people to to live, work, raise their families here,
- 36:25be happy, be proud to be in West Virginia. Give them the
- 36:29tools and resources. So everything I voted on, everyone says, hey,
- 36:31why didn't you just stay in the House of DELI gets as a Republican man,
- 36:35that's a great question. Why didn't I switch parties and change? That's
- 36:37great because you got to prove. You got to show some good votes out
- 36:40there. I've got twelve years of votes. I've got good votes, I
- 36:43got bad votes. I've got team player votes that I just went along with
- 36:45the team. There's Republicans in there right now. That threw some team votes
- 36:49out there that maybe they didn't dis that they didn't agree with, but they
- 36:51just went along with the team votes. So that happens as a record,
- 36:54and you have a record. So why what does one sixty days this next
- 36:58spring do for me? A twelve year history and I thought it was important
- 37:01to run for I could have switched parties, been a Republican. But you
- 37:05know what, in January, I would have been doing a disservice to the
- 37:07people I represented because I need to get out of Charleston, out from under
- 37:10the dome and go around the state and meet people as a candidate for Secretary
- 37:15State. We're going to get to that here in a couple of moments.
- 37:17But I do want to ask you, and I I was texting you back
- 37:21last night just to you know, verify that you were going to come in
- 37:22on the show today, and you jokingly refer to yourself as a unifier because
- 37:27you realize that both the heads of the parties, Doug Republican and Democrat,
- 37:30but hate you equally. Maybe hates a strong term, but they have issues
- 37:36with you. So yeah, you are the great unifier. We're gonna send
- 37:37you to the Middle East next that's because you were able to bring these people
- 37:40together. What would you say though, because the Republicans issued a statement,
- 37:45I mean right afterwards, and it was negative toward I mean, come on,
- 37:49it was negative toward you because it was basically saying, well, while
- 37:52we welcome people and I'm very much paraphrasy, while we welcome people into the
- 37:55Republican Party, be careful. And this has happened with other camp this switch
- 38:00not just you be careful, make sure that they're true conservative and and and
- 38:06that that was kind of a language used. Your thoughts on any of that,
- 38:09well, you know, I don't know where to start, you know,
- 38:10I mean where you got pushing on this show a lot. You have
- 38:14a Democratic Party. I mean, you see all the comments out there,
- 38:16Well, he was never a real Democrat. He was not a true Democrat.
- 38:20He you know, I mean, listen, you live in a glasshouse.
- 38:22I'm not gonna throw stones. I'm not gonna say anything about any particular
- 38:25person. But I mean, you know, some some people feel like Pushkin
- 38:29was the best thing that happened to the Democratic Party. For the Republican Party,
- 38:31they celebrated when he became party chair. And you know that's where we
- 38:35are today. I mean, he makes uh you know, he makes he
- 38:38makes the narrative for the Republicans. So they celebrated him when he became chair.
- 38:42As for the Republican Party chairwoman, you know, I'm not gonna I'm
- 38:45not gonna say anything. I'm not gonna engage and in that type of behavior
- 38:50or language. I don't even know her she doesn't even know me. I
- 38:52reached out to her, I made a call to her, tried to get
- 38:53to know her. You know, that's what's that's what's different about me.
- 38:57I'm not beholding to anybody. I'm not part of the old good old boy
- 38:59system, whether the old good old boy Republican system, old little boy Democratic
- 39:02assistan. And that's part that's what's wrong with our system today. I am
- 39:06who I am. I have a track record, I feel like I'm a
- 39:08good leader. I'm just disappointed that those comments came out for people like the
- 39:13chairwoman. I mean, she's our chairwoman to state party. Go over to
- 39:15DC, help us find a speaker so we can move our country forward.
- 39:19I mean, if she's got that much power, instead of worrying about a
- 39:21Secretary of States race, I mean, the bottom line is, get to
- 39:23know me first, get to know politics should be local, the state party.
- 39:28I do want to say this, I kind of saw it a little
- 39:30hypocritical. I mean, we've got so many Democrats that have switched over in
- 39:34the past few years and didn't even give me a chance, didn't even give
- 39:37me a chance to talk to me. And you have our governor, for
- 39:38God's sake. He won as a Democrat, but then the Republican Party embraces
- 39:42him because he then he became the governor. You have look at this.
- 39:45Donald Trump went out and switched his party affiliation right before he ran for president,
- 39:50and the Republican Party accepted him. Maybe it took it a little while,
- 39:52but they accepted him. We embraced him here in West Virginia. We'll
- 39:55embrace him again here in West Virginia. Senators delic it's county commissioners that you
- 40:01can't be a hypocrite. I mean the party, the Republican Party it is
- 40:05today, was made up of former Democrats who has lost their way with the
- 40:09national political party and have switched to the Republican Party. That's the bottom line.
- 40:14So why they're run for Secretary of State? What is it about this
- 40:15office, Doug that intrigues you so much? Well, this office has always
- 40:21intrigued me. You know, this is an office that the more glamorous part
- 40:23is about the election side of things, you know, But the election side
- 40:27and make our safe, secure, accessible, fair elections. I think we
- 40:30need to be on the forefront. The current Secretary Warner, he's done a
- 40:32fabulous job in his staff working with the county clerks. You know, county
- 40:37clerks are backbone of our state. The bottom line is they know their politics
- 40:40is all local. They know how to run an election. Give them the
- 40:43tools and resources. But we need to stay on the forefront. I'm not
- 40:45saying our elections aren't safe right now, but we need to continue to ensure
- 40:47they are always things pop up. Partner with Marshall University and the Cybersecurity School
- 40:52what we can do to ensure that our elections remain safe. But then the
- 40:54three force of the office is the business side of the office. That's the
- 40:58part that really intrigues me. Business background, my acumate, my working with
- 41:01businesses of all sizes traveling around the country. That is really the front door.
- 41:07The Secretary State's Office is literally the front door you have to register your
- 41:09business, and before you become a business in West Virginia, you start at
- 41:13the business portal the Secretary of State's Office. That's what really excited me working
- 41:16with businesses, helping West Virginians of all businesses who are putting their families first
- 41:22and one to be successful. We want to give them the tools and resources
- 41:25they need. The current West Virginians to make it as easy and efficient as
- 41:30possible to do business in West Virginia. Some of the other people that are
- 41:32going to be running, we know the Putnham Kenny Clerk, Brian Wood is
- 41:36in the race. He's been on the show card. Delegate Chris Pritt,
- 41:37former legislator, can read maybe some others coming in, possibly hearing that there
- 41:42could be more names in or the race. What sets Doug scaff apart.
- 41:45No, that's great. You know, I have a track record of leadership
- 41:49and communication. I think in this role you have to be somebody that can
- 41:52bring people together. We joke about it. The Secretary States Office should be
- 41:55one that doesn't wear stripes. You can't. You can't. You have to
- 41:59reppers that all registered voters in West Virginia. You shouldn't wear stripes. You're
- 42:02like a referee. You give the clerks the tools and resources to be successful.
- 42:07But as far as a business office, it doesn't matter if you're a
- 42:10Republican by trade or a Democrat. You need to support all West Virginians who
- 42:15want to start a business in West Virginia, regardless of their party affiliation.
- 42:19So I think I have a track record. Hey, look, we joked
- 42:21about it. I brought both party chairs together to question question me running for
- 42:25Secretary of State. So I think it's one of those things we're listening that's
- 42:29old school politics. Quit thinking that way. We need to put the right
- 42:31people in the right place at the right time. With my experience in business,
- 42:36with my love for the election process, bringing people together, just get
- 42:38a chance to know me. Keep it local. I may not have the
- 42:42experiences that somebody would have, you know, on the clerk side, but
- 42:45I probably have more experiences a lot of people have on the business side.
- 42:47So I think we compliment each other and you put a good team around you.
- 42:52That's what I'm I'm not going to go into this office because it needs
- 42:53an overhaul. This office is functioning fantastic. They're moving forward to doing a
- 42:58great job. They just need somebody that can come here and work together,
- 43:00think differently, be creative, bring everybody together, and continue to move forward.
- 43:05I'll close with this being that you are the president of HD Media,
- 43:07owners of the Gazette Mail, the Huntings and Herald Dispatch and other papers around
- 43:10the region. Are you worried, Doug, that there could be allegations at
- 43:14owning and media conglomerate like that would give you an unfair advantage in the race.
- 43:19No, I don't. I mean, that's my day job. You
- 43:22know. I run the business side of things. I don't mess with I
- 43:23have thirteen newsrooms. People say, y'all, you know you're in charge of
- 43:27the Gazette Mail. You're in tragedy. No. I get the Herald,
- 43:29Dispatch, the Logan Banyoner, I got the Coal Valley News. We got
- 43:31thirteen newspapers, and I am not involved in any of the day to day
- 43:35operations when it comes to news. I run the business side. I go
- 43:37out there. Commercial printing is a big deal. I focus on that.
- 43:39I go out and try to bring new assets to the table. From a
- 43:43business side. We do a lot of streaming. But no, not at
- 43:45all. You know, I think over the last five years being involved at
- 43:49the newspaper, you can see that I've kept my independence from that. There's
- 43:53been nothing, no interference as all from you could talk to anybody about that.
- 43:57I did have one question here as it relates to the paper, and
- 44:00uh the person wanted to know if I could ask mister scaff what does the
- 44:04Gazette Mail do with all their newspapers that do not sell both in their building.
- 44:08What's a distribute with a distribution so on and so forth? And would
- 44:12you consider collecting all of them and donating to the animal shelters to be used
- 44:15to for the for the cages. Absolutely, we recycle. We recycle as
- 44:20many papers as we can get our hands on. We recycle everything. But
- 44:22yeah, if they need the newspapers for the amily, that's that's one thing
- 44:25I didn't think about. But we'd be happy to do any guess of that
- 44:29there, you know, we got plenty that would be great, great idea,
- 44:30bringing people together. That's what Doug scaff does, bringing people together and
- 44:35animals together. Now, so we want to help the animal shelter out,
- 44:37But no, it's it's it's been a great and I am who I am,
- 44:39Dave. The bottom line is I'm the same Doug Scaff that everybody gets.
- 44:42Just get a chance to know me, and I think you'll realize that
- 44:44I love this state, I love the people, and we can work together.
- 44:46Whether you're a Republican or Democrat or independent or anything in between. This
- 44:50office needs to function for the people in West Virginia. I believe I have
- 44:52the leadership and skill sets to help continue to make it grow Doug scaff now
- 44:57Republican candidate for Secretaries. Say appreciate you being here man. We'll talk soon
- 45:00and thanks a lot. Five etdy Live brought to you a part by General

- 47:31I got a ton of text to get to from the scaff interview, as
- 47:35you may imagine, but I did want to get this in there. This
- 47:37was sent to me the there's a new poll out and it has to do
- 47:42with with the governor's raised. Now, this is from West Virginia Statewide dot
- 47:46Com. This has Patrick Morrissey in at forty seven percent, Mac Warner,
- 47:52current Secretary of State, seventeen point eight percent, Chris Miller fourteen point eight
- 47:57percent, More Capito the the current delegate, thirteen percent, and JB.
- 48:00Mccusky, the current state auditor, at four point nine percent. That is
- 48:05according to West Virginia Statewide dot Com. The legislature back in town for interims,
- 48:13and well, I'll tell you what Brad and I Well, I'll have
- 48:15Brad mclahanny and the show. We'll talk about that tomorrow. Let me try
- 48:19to knock out some texts here. Texas. Dave scaff beets all I've ever
- 48:22seen in and out of state politics for years, and always a DEM.
- 48:24Now the same day he announces a run for secretary of state, he switches
- 48:29parties. I guess your bud Pushkin will be next to switch. I'm gonna
- 48:31go ahead and write that down as a note that Pushkin's probably not gonna switch.
- 48:36He's gonna throw that out there. Probably not. Text says Doug railed
- 48:40against GOP platform issues on the floor for years. Does he renounce those comments
- 48:45today on the air? Well, we'll have him back on again several times
- 48:47between now an election to see about that. Scaff's is a TEXTRAI is a
- 48:52political opportunist. It's demeaning and offensive to West Virginia citizens that would fall for
- 48:58Scaff's excuses. We know exactly what he's doing. Tex says, worry about
- 49:01a Secretary of States race? Are you kidding me? We and the Republican
- 49:06Party are very worried about it. We don't need the president of the Gazette
- 49:09running our elections in West Virginia. That's a disaster in the making, Texas,
- 49:14Scaff just agreed on the radio toil I was product to be pooped on
- 49:16by talks and cats appropriate according to it. I'm sorry. It takes a
- 49:22lot to make me laugh, but that was actually that was actually pretty funny.
- 49:28Tex says. Is the Charleston newspaper going to switch parties too? I
- 49:34don't see that happening, Tex says, Doug knows he can't win an election
- 49:38with a d The real reason he switched just to be honest, well,
- 49:42let me just say this, on a state wide level, there's not going
- 49:46to be any Democrats are gonna win. I'm sorry, but that's just kind
- 49:50of where we are right now. Though they'll pick up some House seats and
- 49:52maybe a couple other seats here, but it's just not gonna happen. I
- 49:55mean that that you're going to see on state wide level any Democrat win.
- 50:00With all due respect to Honetyton mayor Steve Williams who was in the race for
- 50:04governor. Mister Williams is a good man, but one of those people I
- 50:07mentioned earlier, the Republicans are going to be your next governor at the state
- 50:12of West Virginia. Tex says, if West Virginian values are found in today's
- 50:16Republican values, then West Virginians must value sex, abuse of enabler's clan,
- 50:21sympathizers, seditionists, fraudsters, corporate welfare and conspiracy theorists. West Virginia politics
- 50:27makes me feel embarrassed to live in this beautiful states Texas. Scaffs pointed the
- 50:37just joined I'm sorry, the women haters club. Glad he is gone,
- 50:43Texas. What sets Doug apart? He is the only Democrat running as a
- 50:45Republican and rules over liberal newspapers. According to a Texter Texas, Trump registered
- 50:51as a Republican in Manhattan in nineteen eighty seven, switched the Reform Party in
- 50:54nineteen ninety nine, the Democratic Party in two thousand and one, and back
- 50:58to the Republican Party in two thousand and nine. Question from mister scaffold,
- 51:04it's a mailed Okay, we already covered that one. I'm sorry. Every
- 51:07elected official is to represent both the West Virginia and the US constitutions. According
- 51:13to a texture, TEXTA says you had to protect your boy from tough questions.
- 51:21He's my boy now. Next time he lies about the National Democrats making
- 51:24him switch parties, ask him why he's drawn to a party controlled by a
- 51:28rapist. According to a texture, politics are local according to scaff but he
- 51:32allegedly was national politics and made to switch parties. Can we all agree that
- 51:37scaff isn't consistent and has no principles? Tech says, I suppose Doug Staff
- 51:43doesn't agree with healthcare for veterans, infrastructure, semiconductor manufacturing, voting rights,
- 51:47broadband investment, major energy products, The lowest unemployment in fifty years, and
- 51:52fourteen million jobs. All this from Democrats in the past two years. All
- 51:58right, we got to get Oh I did not get to all the texts.
- 52:00I'll do my best to try to make him up a little bit later.
- 52:02I knew that was gonna happen. I knew it was gonna happen.
- 52:06Jeff, I'll blame Hollywood. Jeff Ptty, my producer. Coming up on
