Transcript
- 0:00[SPEAKER_01]: Good morning, everybody.
- 0:01[SPEAKER_01]: Welcome back to the Graham Hawking Lane Patreon channel.
- 0:03[SPEAKER_01]: This episode is going to be coming out in February where the theme on the show is going to be Voodoo in pop culture.
- 0:10[SPEAKER_01]: I have a lot of really incredible content on the main show and over here on the Patreon.
- 0:14[SPEAKER_01]: And we get to hit some characters that don't get a lot of focus.
- 0:18[SPEAKER_01]: Today, we're going to be talking all about Tanta Maddie, who is a really interesting character that I had not given a lot of thought to, but now I love her.
- 0:26[SPEAKER_01]: She's amazing.
- 0:27[SPEAKER_01]: I am thrilled to be joined by two of my dear friends, who are real-life friends, but I've never interacted with you both at the same time.
- 0:33[SPEAKER_01]: We're sorry.
- 0:34[SPEAKER_01]: And Erica Schultz are here.
- 0:36[SPEAKER_01]: Let me hear a little bit about your friendship.
- 0:38[SPEAKER_01]: How did the two of you meet?
- 0:40[SPEAKER_01]: You're like pretty good buddies as I understand it.
- 0:42[SPEAKER_00]: Darrell's my brother.
- 0:43[SPEAKER_00]: I introduce your brother to people because he's my other brother, Darrell.
- 0:49[SPEAKER_02]: We met at a con, right?
- 0:50[SPEAKER_00]: Did we meet through the convention?
- 0:52[SPEAKER_00]: Did we meet through the podcast?
- 0:53[SPEAKER_02]: I think it was convention first.
- 0:55[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it was like 2010 or so.
- 0:58[SPEAKER_02]: Probably, I don't know.
- 0:59[SPEAKER_02]: It's like double digits now after that.
- 1:00[SPEAKER_00]: You can never get in a really long time.
- 1:02[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
- 1:03[SPEAKER_00]: Really long time.
- 1:04[SPEAKER_02]: Way to long.
- 1:05[SPEAKER_02]: We get in a lot of trouble at cons.
- 1:07[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, we do get a lot of get into a lot of trouble.
- 1:09[SPEAKER_00]: And Darrell's oldest cousin who's kind of like the matriarch had adopted me.
- 1:14[SPEAKER_00]: So I am now part of the Taylor family.
- 1:17[SPEAKER_01]: That's excellent.
- 1:18[SPEAKER_01]: How often do you see each other in real life?
- 1:19[SPEAKER_02]: We see each other in real life.
- 1:20[SPEAKER_00]: We see each other in real life.
- 1:21[SPEAKER_02]: But we, you know, we, very directly, we hung out at the, what was it?
- 1:25[SPEAKER_02]: The Stephen Colbert?
- 1:26[SPEAKER_02]: Was it Stephen Colbert?
- 1:27[SPEAKER_00]: Oh yeah, we did, we did the Stephen Colbert show.
- 1:29[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, because they didn't come for the to that one.
- 1:32[SPEAKER_02]: So I went, yeah.
- 1:33[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, we did.
- 1:34[SPEAKER_00]: And then you were at New York.
- 1:35[SPEAKER_00]: And then you had your cousins wedding.
- 1:38[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
- 1:38[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
- 1:39[SPEAKER_00]: So we didn't do Baltimore.
- 1:41[SPEAKER_00]: You didn't do Baltimore because you had your cousins wedding.
- 1:43[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, I had to be in a wedding for that.
- 1:46[SPEAKER_02]: I was so happy to be at weddings.
- 1:48[SPEAKER_02]: I love them so much.
- 1:49[SPEAKER_01]: I love when I meet friends and make friends, but I love when my friends are friends with each other.
- 1:54[SPEAKER_01]: So I get to be the fun third wheel, but I also have chips with you both, so this is going to be a good time today.
- 2:00[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, that's great.
- 2:02[SPEAKER_01]: Let's open up with Gambit.
- 2:05[SPEAKER_01]: Gambit is kind of a focal character from the X-Men, a more recent addition.
- 2:10[SPEAKER_01]: He is a Claremont creation, but it was initially created in 1990, if I'm remembering correctly,
- 2:17[SPEAKER_01]: beef.
- 2:17[SPEAKER_01]: He's got an interesting power set.
- 2:19[SPEAKER_01]: He has interesting costume.
- 2:21[SPEAKER_01]: He's got that really deep French quarter, New Orleans accent.
- 2:25[SPEAKER_01]: He's a bowstaff and like pink body armor with like a trench coat who charges and throws playing cards.
- 2:32[SPEAKER_02]: He's an odd character.
- 2:34[SPEAKER_01]: I think man animated series obviously propelled this character to huge heights in the early 90s.
- 2:41[SPEAKER_01]: Shortly after he first appeared, he debuted right around the same time as Bishop and a few other kind of key characters who've gone on to become kind of a big deal in the X-Men.
- 2:49[SPEAKER_01]: Now, Gambit is a character for a long time that I didn't love.
- 2:53[SPEAKER_01]: It took me a while.
- 2:54[SPEAKER_01]: It's more recently on the show as I've explored some of his early origins and done some character episodes kind of loosely around Gambit.
- 3:02[SPEAKER_01]: The first one being Dementa and I did the character Fontanelle from this series we're going to review from Fabianisi as of today.
- 3:09[SPEAKER_01]: So he's an interesting character and has a lot of deep lore in the X-Men world that's never really been touched on.
- 3:15[SPEAKER_01]: Why did you guys both first meet Gambit?
- 3:17[SPEAKER_01]: What is it that you like or latched on to about this character?
- 3:20[SPEAKER_00]: In the Claremont run and meet in Genesis and watching the X-Men animated series.
- 3:28[SPEAKER_00]: And he was the devil-make-hair character.
- 3:30[SPEAKER_00]: He was the bad boy that everybody loved, kind of thing.
- 3:34[SPEAKER_00]: I remember in one of the, it was with Brother Voodoo, there was a mini series that I think John Laman wrote it.
- 3:40[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah.
- 3:41[SPEAKER_00]: And Gambit makes a comment about like, not everybody can pull off pink.
- 3:45[SPEAKER_00]: I just remember I was like, yeah, he runs around with like, fuchsia and turquoise.
- 3:50[SPEAKER_00]: Nobody says anything about it.
- 3:53[SPEAKER_00]: In my mind, I think that Gambit is the guy that every girl wants to sleep with and every guy wants to be.
- 3:59[SPEAKER_01]: But also every guy wants to sleep with.
- 4:02[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
- 4:02[SPEAKER_00]: Well, that's the thing is I think that Gambit is very fluid.
- 4:06[SPEAKER_00]: He's basically your perfect example of the shape shifter from Joseph Conrad where he will do whatever he has to do in order to get out on top if he has to align with the bad guy in order to survive he will do so if he has to align with the good guy.
- 4:24[SPEAKER_00]: Now, he's now like 100% a good guy, but back in the day like when you're talking about the whole situation with like the meat and massacre, but I will say the gambit and rogue are very, very close to my heart as my husband and I had gambit and rogue action figures on our wedding cake.
- 4:38[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, that's great.
- 4:41[SPEAKER_00]: I love gambit and rogue and I'm so glad that they're married.
- 4:43[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
- 4:44[SPEAKER_01]: So I know you're writing Rogue currently and I know you're working close with Bill Simone who's writing Gambit and Rogue and I feel like and I I really like Gale a lot.
- 4:53[SPEAKER_01]: I haven't befriended Gale in the way that you and I've become friends If I was critical of Gale's run, it's almost that Gambit and Rogue get the only focus in the book outside of the kids.
- 5:03[SPEAKER_01]: I feel like a Wolverine Jubilee in that crawler just kind of I agree with that.
- 5:07[SPEAKER_01]: God, did she love Gambit and Rogue?
- 5:08[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah.
- 5:09[SPEAKER_01]: What's it been like collaborating with Gale as you're working on Rogue and Gambit?
- 5:12[SPEAKER_00]: Gail is great.
- 5:13[SPEAKER_00]: She and I collaborated together on a sorts of sorrow for dynamite was a big dynamite crossover about 10 years ago and she has always been lovely.
- 5:22[SPEAKER_00]: She has always been a huge cheerleader for me and I I adore her for that.
- 5:27[SPEAKER_00]: I do agree that gambit and rogue do get like the main focus in uncanny.
- 5:32[SPEAKER_00]: I think Wolverine in a team book though can be a little frustrating because he has his own ongoing.
- 5:37[SPEAKER_00]: A rather has several of the solo books.
- 5:40[SPEAKER_00]: And so it's kind of difficult to try and weave him into the team book, but also he's doing his solo missions and this is that in the next slide.
- 5:49[SPEAKER_00]: So I think that's why Logan kind of takes a back seat to certain things, but I love to see Gambit and Rome together and happy and hot and heavy.
- 5:58[SPEAKER_01]: They're excellently written by Gail there, and I'm really excited for your roadbook.
- 6:02[SPEAKER_01]: Adele, what's your connection to Gambit?
- 6:04[SPEAKER_02]: Well, I was reading, I spent even before Claremont, so I'd followed it all the way through, and like Gambit, I liked Gambit because he was the next Wolverine, because Wolverine was the shitster back when he was in the book, right?
- 6:19[SPEAKER_02]: And when he started out in the book with Cyclops and now Gambit,
- 6:23[SPEAKER_02]: became in the 90s.
- 6:24[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, Gambit became the one who fucked with Wolverine all the time and made him mad all the time.
- 6:30[SPEAKER_02]: And I was fun to see the old man get fuck with.
- 6:33[SPEAKER_02]: Even I think there's even times where he said in panels is just what it was like for a Cyclops Scott having to deal with me all the time because of the shit that I give.
- 6:43[SPEAKER_02]: So I always, I'm the opposite.
- 6:45[SPEAKER_02]: I'm the divorce guy.
- 6:46[SPEAKER_02]: I like gambit single.
- 6:48[SPEAKER_02]: I like him like unpredictable because he's kind of predictable now because he's he's always going to be loyal to broke.
- 6:55[SPEAKER_00]: He's never going to portray them in the in the X factor Peter David sleeping with the boss's wife.
- 7:01[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, yeah, I like him being just the person who's like he's watching the room.
- 7:07[SPEAKER_02]: He's seeing what he who he can kind of change.
- 7:10[SPEAKER_02]: I like the command aspect of him.
- 7:13[SPEAKER_02]: I kind of missed the command style of him, but you can't really do that in the team book.
- 7:17[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I like it's fun to see a couple.
- 7:20[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, because you don't see this in comics a lot.
- 7:22[SPEAKER_02]: But Gail is not afraid to show how
- 7:25[SPEAKER_02]: Mary couples can be super attracted to each other, though, right?
- 7:29[SPEAKER_02]: Like she's not scared to say it.
- 7:31[SPEAKER_02]: Usually when they marry off a character in comics, they just make them just, you know, kind of boring.
- 7:37[SPEAKER_02]: Like they don't get to flirt with each other really.
- 7:39[SPEAKER_02]: It's usually, they playfully complain about married life.
- 7:43[SPEAKER_02]: But no, Gail is like, no, we, we fuck a lot all the time.
- 7:48[SPEAKER_02]: We have fun with it.
- 7:50[SPEAKER_02]: I don't care if we make you disgusted when we do this.
- 7:55[SPEAKER_01]: He uses a lot of narration for Gambit where he's talking about how complicated and prickly rogue can be and how he just loves every piece of that.
- 8:04[SPEAKER_01]: I like him as the loyal husband, but he's got this stuff going on with this, you know, agamotos eye that he's carrying around corrupting it.
- 8:11[SPEAKER_01]: We'll see how that goes.
- 8:12[SPEAKER_01]: It's fun to see him in the featured role.
- 8:13[SPEAKER_01]: Now, I'm not going to delve deep into Marvel lore here, but I do think it's important to do a little bit of setup.
- 8:18[SPEAKER_01]: Claremont had control of the ex books for a long time.
- 8:21[SPEAKER_01]: Now, things started to get a little wonky after Jim Shooter came on board.
- 8:25[SPEAKER_01]: There's a lot of history there.
- 8:27[SPEAKER_01]: Exfactor got launched featuring the original X-Men, which, and Claremont had this ability to kind of reinvent the
- 8:33[SPEAKER_01]: So there was an era where all the characters passed through like the sea's perilous and there was like a while Where all the characters were just kind of scattered around storm got de-aged to like a kid form Well, Danny and the orphan maker and then it gambit gets introduced as like her her like
- 8:47[SPEAKER_01]: thief partner, right?
- 8:49[SPEAKER_01]: So they're like having some misadventures.
- 8:50[SPEAKER_01]: It is not very long after that before Gambit gets wrapped up in all of the crazy murailin saga, the extinction agenda.
- 8:58[SPEAKER_01]: He just becomes kind of a part of a huge ensemble, but I don't think people had a deep relationship with him.
- 9:03[SPEAKER_01]: then the 1993, which book 1991, excuse me, the new volume of X-Men adjectivless launches.
- 9:10[SPEAKER_01]: There's the X-Men blue team where the book sold a million covers, and gambit and rogue are on the team with the siloic and cyclops in beast and oh, someone else is there.
- 9:20[SPEAKER_01]: Anyway, there's a lot of character focused stories and then the X-Men gold team is over on the other side where Bishop is kind of the brand new player alongside the older heroes.
- 9:29[SPEAKER_01]: So Claremont left the book shortly after this.
- 9:31[SPEAKER_01]: He launched this new title.
- 9:33[SPEAKER_01]: They made him do some stuff with Magneto.
- 9:35[SPEAKER_01]: He didn't like.
- 9:35[SPEAKER_01]: And then Scott LeBdele kind of comes on as like the Wunderkin writing initially alongside Jim Lee.
- 9:43[SPEAKER_01]: So gambit kind of gets his first big focus in that arc in X-Men volume two, like number eight.
- 9:49[SPEAKER_01]: Abdullah Dhanabudro for shows up.
- 9:51[SPEAKER_01]: We meet the thieves guild and then a lot of really deep lore starts happening.
- 9:55[SPEAKER_01]: Meanwhile, Phoebe and E.C.A.A.
- 9:57[SPEAKER_01]: has built over in the, excuse me, over in the x-force title, the externals, these long live mutants, and eventually we start trying out some more solo X-Men books that are starting to get more limited series, something they've kind of only done with Wolverine up to this point.
- 10:10[SPEAKER_01]: But in the early 90s, Storm and Rogue and Gambit, and all these characters started getting solo mini titles, which is something we've been seeing a lot more under
- 10:22[SPEAKER_01]: So gamut number one, debuts in 1993, just a few years after.
- 10:26[SPEAKER_01]: And this is where we start getting deep into the lore of gamut in New Orleans.
- 10:30[SPEAKER_01]: He grew up in a thieves guild.
- 10:32[SPEAKER_01]: There's a very Romeo and Juliet kind of style story between his guild and the assassins guild.
- 10:38[SPEAKER_01]: A thief versus a assassin is kind of a fun thing.
- 10:40[SPEAKER_01]: If you have ever played D&D, there's a lot of tropes to be explored.
- 10:44[SPEAKER_01]: And there's a ton of characters that we won't get a lot into today, but we do have to touch on a few of them.
- 10:50[SPEAKER_01]: I've done an episode on Candra with my dear friend Sarah Galey, if you, I hope you laughed all the way through that.
- 10:55[SPEAKER_01]: It's delicious.
- 10:56[SPEAKER_01]: But Candra is this external who's been around for a long time, who has formed both the thieves guild and the assassins guild in New Orleans as a way to get personal power.
- 11:05[SPEAKER_01]: She trades favors with both groups.
- 11:08[SPEAKER_01]: She keeps them kind of pitted against each other and she awards particularly for the assassins, but for both she rewards superpowers through like this elixir of life.
- 11:16[SPEAKER_01]: that she likes to keep between her boobs.
- 11:17[SPEAKER_01]: One time Gambit like Kister and somehow got his hand down her blouse and still be mixer without her noticing, which tells you a lot of the kind of kisser that Gambit is.
- 11:26[SPEAKER_01]: So there's a lot of these characters kind of running around.
- 11:28[SPEAKER_01]: There's a lot of kind of birthright, you know, Gambit is kind of the air to the guild.
- 11:33[SPEAKER_01]: There's a one arc recently a few years back where he becomes the king of all the, all the thieves on
- 11:39[SPEAKER_01]: like the Thee Island.
- 11:40[SPEAKER_01]: So the Thee's Guild has been established to exist in quarters all around the world.
- 11:45[SPEAKER_01]: Reed, Judd and K's recent Black Cat run, where there's Odessa Drake introduced and like the New York Assassin, or Thee's Guild is like a huge part of this.
- 11:53[SPEAKER_01]: But the Bella Donna Thee's Guild in New Orleans is like a franchise that she opened up herself a long time ago, where the Assassin's Guild seems to be something that she started herself if I'm reading that correctly.
- 12:04[SPEAKER_01]: And then we have these two kind of groups kind of pitting for power from candra with each other with a lot of cast of characters going on and family connections for each one.
- 12:15[SPEAKER_01]: So gambits, dad, Belladana's family, et cetera.
- 12:18[SPEAKER_02]: So I always kind of dug that kind of stuff because I like to read a lot of stories and watch a lot of movies with head ninja clans and it would always be like different fractions between the,
- 12:31[SPEAKER_02]: the clans and there's always one side that once piece and the other side that once wore and the whole thing of this woman that he loved and you know they couldn't be together but they loved each other and then you know with Bella Donna and then when they he kind of fell out of love with her and you know their whole thing was rogue and
- 12:49[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know, I kind of dug that hole because Gambit kind of.
- 12:53[SPEAKER_02]: He was like, all right, I guess Bella Donna's dead.
- 12:55[SPEAKER_02]: Rogue, we can like really hook up now and be together.
- 12:58[SPEAKER_02]: I don't worry about it.
- 12:59[SPEAKER_02]: It's cool.
- 13:00[SPEAKER_02]: And we read that in some of the issues with he just flips.
- 13:04[SPEAKER_02]: He can flip so fast between who he loves, who he says he used to love, who he doesn't love anymore.
- 13:11[SPEAKER_02]: And it's
- 13:12[SPEAKER_02]: it's just funny how that world allows him to do it and they look cool.
- 13:16[SPEAKER_02]: Like, Lee Weeks I think was the first was probably to this day my favorite artist on the Gambit stuff because he makes everyone look like just so cool badass sexy the whole thing.
- 13:28[SPEAKER_01]: Now, Gambit is written by Howard Mackie, the first limited series with Art by Lee Weeks.
- 13:34[SPEAKER_01]: It's very Romeo and Juliet.
- 13:35[SPEAKER_01]: It's good.
- 13:36[SPEAKER_01]: But one of the things this series does right away is give Gambit an entire world outside of the X-Men to play in.
- 13:42[SPEAKER_01]: Wolverine has that.
- 13:43[SPEAKER_01]: It's easy to tell a little bit of a story.
- 13:45[SPEAKER_01]: But Roge is like, mystiques her mom and there's all these connections to other characters and she's got the Carol Danvers thing.
- 13:52[SPEAKER_01]: We've now given Gambit an entire realm outside of the X-Men to play in and then it's like a sandbox for the X-Men to play in on occasional adventures.
- 14:00[SPEAKER_01]: Now the plot of Romeo and Juliet, I'm way over simplifying.
- 14:03[SPEAKER_01]: We've got the the two young children in the rival plans who fall in love and then there's some key characters along the way.
- 14:11[SPEAKER_01]: uh, Juliette's love or cousin gets killed by Romeo's friend and then she feels so betrayed but she and Romeo end up together.
- 14:20[SPEAKER_01]: If we're looking at these roles here, this this initial thing with like Bella Donna as Juliette, she has a brother who gets killed and her assassin from things going on and and Tantamada who we're going to introduce here, uh, I'm going to say
- 14:38[SPEAKER_01]: is kind of the nurse role if you've read Romeo and Juliet.
- 14:42[SPEAKER_01]: She's kind of that person that Juliet can go to to confide in and she's willing to kind of work behind the scenes on both sides.
- 14:49[SPEAKER_01]: She's got connections to both guilds.
- 14:51[SPEAKER_01]: It's an interesting role for this character to play as a black woman who has a certain set of kind of mystic mutant abilities based in New Orleans.
- 15:01[SPEAKER_01]: Now, I open the show in February with an incredible interview with an academic about Voodoo in Hollywood.
- 15:08[SPEAKER_01]: So I'm already recorded, it's excellent.
- 15:10[SPEAKER_01]: We talked a lot about the difference between Haitian Voodoo and New Orleans Voodoo and the difference between the actual spiritual roots.
- 15:16[SPEAKER_01]: But I'll introduce this very quickly here.
- 15:18[SPEAKER_01]: Voodoo being the Hollywood version of that is based off of religious practices that got kind of combined and carried on by families who were sold into slavery.
- 15:30[SPEAKER_01]: So it's kind of a spiritual practice and a deep grounding for characters, well, and Holly would for characters to drop on, but it becomes kind of the white man's playground.
- 15:39[SPEAKER_01]: Before, let's tell these creepy stories about shrunken heads and voodoo dolls and zombies and things we don't understand.
- 15:58[SPEAKER_00]: As a black woman, she has the privilege, and I know I'm using that word in a loaded sense, but she has the privilege to travel between both guilds, both the thieves guilds and the Assassin's guilds, and as the nurse in Romeo and Juliet, she goes between the monstogues and the capitalists, because she is a healer, because she is seen as someone who is advantageous to both of them, they will sort of
- 16:24[SPEAKER_00]: look past the fact that she's laid hands on an assassin and then laid hands on a thief.
- 16:30[SPEAKER_00]: I think that it's great to show the fact that she is revered by both sides and that she is the first one to tell Bella Donna to shut the hell up and Bella tries to sort of back talk and she's like, no, no, no, listen, I was there when you were born, I was there when you fell off your bike, I was there in your skin journey, I was there with all that shit like you do not talk to me like that and it's interesting how Bella tries so hard to stand up to her, but at the same time,
- 17:00[SPEAKER_00]: feels like as, as strong as I am as the leader of the assassin's guilt, I still can't fuck with this lady because I know that she knows how to take all of us down.
- 17:09[SPEAKER_01]: Bella Donna as a character is very headstrong.
- 17:13[SPEAKER_01]: She's a white woman with kind of, uh, I don't know, corn roots.
- 17:17[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, like she was braided here.
- 17:20[SPEAKER_01]: She's got an interesting cultural place.
- 17:21[SPEAKER_02]: Like the princess in a way.
- 17:23[SPEAKER_01]: She's a great assassin.
- 17:25[SPEAKER_01]: She's quite entitled.
- 17:26[SPEAKER_01]: And it's almost like gambits that one guy that got her soft side.
- 17:30[SPEAKER_01]: And when he betrayed her, she would never forgive him.
- 17:34[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, he's from the streets.
- 17:35[SPEAKER_02]: He's a gutter rat.
- 17:36[SPEAKER_02]: They would call him sometimes.
- 17:38[SPEAKER_02]: Like he's that kind of character, the rose.
- 17:40[SPEAKER_01]: You know, but also maybe if she threatens his life, then he'll come back to her, right?
- 17:43[SPEAKER_01]: It's almost, she's willing to do a lot of things.
- 17:46[SPEAKER_01]: No, and it talks a maddie is very willing to keep the peace between the gills.
- 17:51[SPEAKER_01]: Like she loves rogue, she loves Belladana, she loves Gambit.
- 17:56[SPEAKER_01]: And she wants to keep the peace, but she's kind of an elderly woman, pulling the strings of power to try to keep things from going a particular direction.
- 18:03[SPEAKER_01]: Bella Donna, I do think has the right to be enraged.
- 18:06[SPEAKER_01]: When she's in a coma in that first series, Rogue touches Bella Donna's hand and absorbs her memories of having been intimate with Gambit and Rogue's not allowed to be intimate with Gambit.
- 18:18[SPEAKER_01]: So when Bella Donna does wake up from this coma, Rogue has taken her intimacy, her vulnerability, and I kind of get her rage a little bit in a way that makes her a compelling character.
- 18:28[SPEAKER_01]: Gambit has a
- 18:29[SPEAKER_01]: ton of side stuff, go it on.
- 18:33[SPEAKER_01]: Fabian, UCS explores this character in Gandet Volume 3.
- 18:36[SPEAKER_01]: If you've ever read this series front to back, it's one of those that it takes you like an hour to read each issue.
- 18:40[SPEAKER_01]: They're very dense and you have to really pay attention because the stories are extremely layered.
- 18:45[SPEAKER_01]: There's a lot of characters weaving in and out.
- 18:47[SPEAKER_01]: And UCS have just built this incredible lore for this character.
- 18:50[SPEAKER_01]: The gambit who is a prophesied child, known as the white devil in French, we don't know who his parents are, and there has been some correlations to people thinking he might have supposed to have been the other summer's brother, which has never happened before, but he has an extreme amount of power.
- 19:06[SPEAKER_01]: And there are stories told by Fabian Eceza with the character The New Sun, which is an alternate world version of Gambit where if his kinetic powers kick in at too high of a degree, he can basically destroy all life on the planet.
- 19:19[SPEAKER_01]: He like burns everything out.
- 19:20[SPEAKER_01]: I'm oversimplifying here, but Gambit has a ton of potential, but he's kind of the messianic child in some ways, and then becomes the child of privilege.
- 19:27[SPEAKER_01]: So he has a lot of his stuff going on in his own family as well.
- 19:32[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, if you haven't been reading all of this prior, it's it's like you get hit in a face with like a ton of info like that's it's like Fabian is great for for world building, but it's so much like you hit you it's so much of it that even even when you read this stuff you're like oh man I forgot that that was you know that little detail was there and
- 19:55[SPEAKER_02]: But it gives Gambit this look of I'm worldly.
- 19:58[SPEAKER_02]: Like you need Gambit to be someone like Wolverine was like he was the one that traveled the most.
- 20:04[SPEAKER_02]: He would go off and do things on the side and then come back and never want to tell anybody what he did.
- 20:10[SPEAKER_02]: So you needed that kind of build up to be like he's been all over the place when he meets somebody and they're like
- 20:15[SPEAKER_02]: It's like the Han Solo thing where they go somewhere and it's like you damn, you know, Gambit, how dare you do what you did.
- 20:22[SPEAKER_02]: And he, you know, and he just looks and smiles and he's like, oh, it's fine, monomy, it's no big deal.
- 20:28[SPEAKER_02]: But you kind of need that build up to make him so popular.
- 20:31[SPEAKER_02]: I think that helped making popular because you felt like you kind of got who Gambit was through all of the back law lore.
- 20:39[SPEAKER_02]: because Nora Leans was his mentor for Wolverine.
- 20:42[SPEAKER_02]: Like that, Nora Leans was his world, right?
- 20:45[SPEAKER_02]: I never want to go back there, but he always goes back there because someone needs help, so.
- 20:50[SPEAKER_00]: My husband's best friend is gamut, okay?
- 20:52[SPEAKER_00]: So my husband's best friend is his guy named Jeff.
- 20:55[SPEAKER_00]: And Jeff is handsome and smart and has been all around the world and has had stories that he doesn't want to talk about and literally is any, like you walk into any place in New York City.
- 21:09[SPEAKER_00]: and everybody knows Jeff.
- 21:10[SPEAKER_00]: I always thought that this idea, especially in like the Fabian run of X-Men, it was like, oh my god, I'm reading the story of when Jeff was in Brazil came back and didn't tell anybody what happened or you know like I'm reading
- 21:24[SPEAKER_00]: the secret story of, you know, when this happened, you always ask, and it's always just this like, smirk, and then nothing else.
- 21:33[SPEAKER_00]: You don't get anything else or that's story for another time.
- 21:36[SPEAKER_00]: And that time never comes.
- 21:37[SPEAKER_00]: I think that if you've never read a gambit book starting with the run that Fabian wrote might be too much, I would say maybe start with something
- 21:49[SPEAKER_00]: James Asmson claim man's run just because it talks about how he has a lot of lore, but it's a little it's a little on the lighter side, but Gambit is such a complex character at one point.
- 22:01[SPEAKER_00]: I mean originally, I think he was supposed to be like a clone of sinister or something like that, or an agent for sinister or an agent of least you associated with sinister at one point, which is where I think maybe the alternate summers brother kind of came from maybe that idea sort of was linked to that because you know sinister always wanted to get
- 22:19[SPEAKER_01]: There's not a whole lot of how like he helped set up the marauders, which is right in the nanarticas, the big result.
- 22:24[SPEAKER_01]: But you know, Gambit has the vulnerability about it.
- 22:26[SPEAKER_01]: He's got a lot of swagger, but he's also the kid that was never chosen.
- 22:29[SPEAKER_01]: The kid who's had to do things on his own terms.
- 22:31[SPEAKER_01]: I like part of his character.
- 22:32[SPEAKER_01]: Again, I've become increasingly fond of this character.
- 22:35[SPEAKER_01]: let's talk about Tontamati in the first series and then we have some complications we have to introduce very quickly.
- 22:41[SPEAKER_01]: So if we're jumping into the first limited series and if you guys have the dialogue pulled up here, Erica will you read Tontamati's dialogue when we get there and so it's we're focusing this on Tontamati specifically.
- 22:52[SPEAKER_01]: But
- 22:53[SPEAKER_01]: It's summer in New Orleans, and Remi LeBos have been called back home to settle some family affairs.
- 22:57[SPEAKER_01]: The tie of collector is out.
- 22:59[SPEAKER_01]: Don't worry about it.
- 22:59[SPEAKER_01]: It's a creepy assassin guy.
- 23:01[SPEAKER_01]: He's out collecting for Kendra, the benefactor of the Assassin's Guild.
- 23:05[SPEAKER_01]: And Remi's love, Beladana Boudro, has taken ill among thieves' guild.
- 23:09[SPEAKER_01]: It's a whole story from the X-Men run we talked about earlier.
- 23:12[SPEAKER_01]: And Tantamadi is there watching over here.
- 23:14[SPEAKER_01]: As Beladana is leg, her braided hair spread over a white pillowcase.
- 23:18[SPEAKER_01]: And Rogue is also keeping watch as a favor to Gambit.
- 23:22[SPEAKER_01]: is a stroking Belladana's hair back.
- 23:25[SPEAKER_01]: She's an orange.
- 23:25[SPEAKER_01]: She's wearing a headband, holding back her thick black hair.
- 23:29[SPEAKER_01]: She has these huge orange dangling earrings.
- 23:31[SPEAKER_00]: And she says, that Remy was always a scamp and a heart stealer.
- 23:35[SPEAKER_00]: But he got a hearty gold himself.
- 23:36[SPEAKER_00]: I remember when he first be sparking this little flower here.
- 23:40[SPEAKER_00]: He come to me and say, Tantamati, you'll be having a love potion I can use.
- 23:44[SPEAKER_00]: I tell him, boy, I'm a healer.
- 23:46[SPEAKER_00]: Now you go when Belladana over proper.
- 23:48[SPEAKER_01]: Now, tons of money is very much written like Gambit with that very thick New Orleans accent.
- 23:51[SPEAKER_01]: We're not going to do that for y'all today.
- 23:53[SPEAKER_01]: We're just going to read the dialogue, but there's you'll see, you'll notice all the apostrophes and the little sounds taken out to kind of keep that voice alive for this character.
- 24:02[SPEAKER_01]: Rogue replies y'all a doctor.
- 24:04[SPEAKER_00]: I'm a healer girl, much better than anyone trained in them fancy medical schools.
- 24:08[SPEAKER_00]: I've got the eye and the touch rogue, and it don't be taken no special powers to see that you love Remi.
- 24:13[SPEAKER_00]: Don't you?
- 24:14[SPEAKER_00]: And here you are watching over his wife, you poor thing.
- 24:17[SPEAKER_00]: Remember child, the good lord don't give us any bigger burden than we can carry.
- 24:22[SPEAKER_00]: Now you keep an eye on her.
- 24:23[SPEAKER_00]: I'll be stopping in every day girl.
- 24:25[SPEAKER_00]: Bell's daddy's been trying to all sorts of magic to keep her alive, but she's slipping away.
- 24:29[SPEAKER_00]: I hope Remi can come through.
- 24:31[SPEAKER_00]: There's only so much healing that I can do.
- 24:32[SPEAKER_00]: you call me now if anything changes.
- 24:35[SPEAKER_01]: I'll be here, Tanta says, Rogue, we're going to jump forward.
- 24:38[SPEAKER_01]: So let's keep a bullet point on the word healer for just a moment.
- 24:42[SPEAKER_01]: We're going to jump to issue four, and this is after Rogue is touched by Madonna taking some of her memories.
- 24:47[SPEAKER_01]: Tanta Maddie returns to find Bella Donna having convulsions and says,
- 24:51[SPEAKER_00]: What happened here, girl?
- 24:52[SPEAKER_01]: What happened to Bella Donna to start her convulsing like this?
- 24:56[SPEAKER_00]: Well, talk to me, girl.
- 24:57[SPEAKER_00]: I can't be helping the child if you don't tell me what happened.
- 24:59[SPEAKER_01]: And then the child's collector attacks sets the place on fire, knocks tantamadi out, and there's a massive superhero fight, Bella Donna gets saved, and Kendra and the child's collector are defeated, and no one fucking checks on tantamadi.
- 25:12[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, she's fine.
- 25:13[SPEAKER_02]: I'm sure she's fine.
- 25:14[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, she's fine.
- 25:15[SPEAKER_01]: Now, she's a healer, but we have Howard Mackie bringing this character back in Gambit Volume 2, and I think Gambit Volume 2 is lesser known by a lot of readers, along with Volume 4, which is what Erica referenced earlier by John Layman.
- 25:28[SPEAKER_01]: There's a fallen star that crashes to earth, and several people immediately recognize it as one of the Gregory, the fallen angels, who walk between heaven and hell.
- 25:38[SPEAKER_01]: So literal biblical shit.
- 25:40[SPEAKER_01]: And this particular Grigory, her name is Annie L, A-N-I-E-L-L-E, is a powerful, but innocent, and her fate could tip the balance between salvation and damnation.
- 25:52[SPEAKER_01]: Tonsumati is one of the few people who understands the cosmic stakes.
- 25:56[SPEAKER_01]: She's deeply connected as a follower of the Grigory, and she has an idea related to kind of God's unfinished business.
- 26:03[SPEAKER_01]: So this woman has a deep reference for what she considers holy.
- 26:06[SPEAKER_01]: We'll keep that in mind for a minute from now.
- 26:08[SPEAKER_01]: Now she starts to act as a quiet guide who kind of nudges events in particular directions, other people are seeking out on a L for corruption or control, and Matty believes that the grigory exist in kind of morally gray areas of small angels.
- 26:22[SPEAKER_01]: They're not purely good or purely evil.
- 26:24[SPEAKER_01]: There's a guy named Father Bonavita who recognizes NEL's nature and wants to give her a chance to return to heaven.
- 26:31[SPEAKER_01]: So he sends out a couple of Vatican agents named Katrina and Marcelo to help guide her and protect her.
- 26:36[SPEAKER_01]: But meanwhile, the villain Oliver Stoker wants NEL for power, believing the Gregory can be bound, twisted, and used.
- 26:43[SPEAKER_01]: So it's a war between heaven and hell.
- 26:44[SPEAKER_01]: with this fallen angel in the middle.
- 26:46[SPEAKER_01]: When Gambit enters the story by chance, Tonsamati deliberately pulls him into the conflict.
- 26:51[SPEAKER_01]: She knows he's flawed, but compassionate.
- 26:53[SPEAKER_01]: And the Gregori respond to people who live in moral ambiguity rather than rigid faith.
- 26:58[SPEAKER_01]: So, Matti repeatedly appears to gambit at key moments in this title, pushing him forward while denying that she's doing so.
- 27:05[SPEAKER_01]: any else being hunted across continents, it becomes clear that she's not a mutant, but she's, quote, pure living light, a being whose existence disrupts demonic forces, like these threats like civil and her locusts that show up.
- 27:17[SPEAKER_01]: The Gregory are shown not as monsters but as beings burdened by choice and consequence.
- 27:22[SPEAKER_01]: Stoker ultimately corrupts Katrina turning her into the black cat that was one of the agents of the the Vatican if you recall.
- 27:31[SPEAKER_01]: So this proves how easily humans can fall when exposed to angelic power without understanding it and this mirrors the ancient fall of the Gregory themselves.
- 27:39[SPEAKER_01]: So in the end,
- 27:40[SPEAKER_01]: On a L chooses her own fate rather than being used by Heaven or Hell, she willingly goes with Stoker, not out of submission, but to end the conflict on her own terms, and her choice reinforces Tantamati's core belief, free will matters more than purity.
- 27:55[SPEAKER_01]: So after everything is over, Tantamati denies her involvement entirely.
- 27:58[SPEAKER_01]: She leaves Gabe with a final lesson.
- 28:00[SPEAKER_01]: The world is not divided into saints and sinners, angels and demons.
- 28:04[SPEAKER_01]: The Gregorian exists in between and so do people.
- 28:08[SPEAKER_01]: Gambit returns the stole and cross meals briefly, fades away, changed, but still unresolved.
- 28:14[SPEAKER_01]: So we have this interesting thing because Todd's a body as a healer and we're gonna see more of the shortly.
- 28:19[SPEAKER_01]: represents this like I use these the things from my culture.
- 28:23[SPEAKER_01]: We see her using herbs and potions and you know magic if you will to do healing.
- 28:29[SPEAKER_01]: But she's also deeply Catholic is something that we're seeing here as well.
- 28:33[SPEAKER_01]: And the mix of those cultures is really interesting to me.
- 28:36[SPEAKER_01]: It's the role that will be called Burke has played for E.
- 28:39[SPEAKER_02]: Like it is just like it is just what I'm used to right like you you want to make it I think they they do the food and stuff with characters like this, but then to not turn away American, you know, Christian Yeah, I had by all the Davis and mind for talking about him But now I love will be going very soon.
- 29:00[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, I saw all I say I because I've watched all those movies back in the day Like she's played the house mom where she saved doogie houses.
- 29:07[SPEAKER_02]: It was the time when the
- 29:08[SPEAKER_02]: when she was the one who helped Duki Housa through his anger problems, and the household where their parents were distant, right?
- 29:15[SPEAKER_02]: Like, she has played that role countless times.
- 29:18[SPEAKER_02]: Gainin is basically this character, right?
- 29:20[SPEAKER_02]: Like, she has this mysterious abilities that we never learned what they are.
- 29:25[SPEAKER_02]: To this day, we still don't know what they are really.
- 29:28[SPEAKER_02]: She's always giving counsel to people all the time.
- 29:31[SPEAKER_02]: She net they all you always get a sense that she knows more about you than you even know about yourself But she'll never tell you and she'll never tell you what to do But she'll kind of guide you to the right way and that's that's kind of the character that we all kind of like I mean, that's why it's been that tropes been used a million times the stand
- 29:51[SPEAKER_02]: you just keep going, like it's been, it's been a character catalyously used in American cinema books, comics, like it's just a, it's just a, it makes me go feel comfortable.
- 30:01[SPEAKER_01]: In the series of the Times is late 90s, I was collecting the books.
- 30:04[SPEAKER_01]: They had an opening page that would introduce the characters, and when it says, Tons of Maddie Baptiste, a mystical healer from New Orleans, she was an advisor in front of the thieves in Assassin's Guild, taking special interest in the young boy Remy Lobo, Tons of Maddie, has aided gambit physically emotionally and spiritually
- 30:21[SPEAKER_01]: And on the first page when the angels falling, the captions tell us as the celestial portant streaks earthward taunts a matty batteased, a healer of the caging people in New Orleans, is struck with a divine vision of the stars, fallen angels, and of a lone thief who seeks to repent for the sins of his past.
- 30:37[SPEAKER_01]: So listen to her name alone, her last name is Baptiste, which is a very Catholic as well.
- 30:42[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, I kind of gravitate towards because I have grandmother's and I was very close to my grandmother.
- 30:48[SPEAKER_02]: So she kind of was that way a lot of times.
- 30:51[SPEAKER_02]: And so I, you know, kind of go with that.
- 30:54[SPEAKER_02]: Historically funny because there have been so many, you know, through slavery, where
- 30:59[SPEAKER_02]: Black, you know, were enslaved women were basically the mothers to these children to all of these white Southern children and they wanted to be closer with these, you know, slaves than they were.
- 31:14[SPEAKER_02]: their own parents at times.
- 31:16[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, so it's historically it's ingrained in America, even though we don't like to talk about that part of it.
- 31:23[SPEAKER_02]: We always skip over that and we go with, you know, the happy black woman who's helping this family.
- 31:30[SPEAKER_02]: This Medea, like this is Medea too.
- 31:32[SPEAKER_02]: Like all of this kind of, you come in, this black woman comes in and she's happy and she's, you know, motherly and she's comforting and she's,
- 31:41[SPEAKER_02]: you know, and she saves, you know, the family, the matriarchs, she encourages them to do better in all that.
- 31:47[SPEAKER_02]: So it's like a, it's like a thing that you constantly see in America, even now when America's trying to get rid of anyone that doesn't look a certain way.
- 31:55[SPEAKER_01]: Now, okay, I'm all for what the gold bear playing this character.
- 31:58[SPEAKER_01]: I do not need Tyler Perry to play something.
- 32:00[SPEAKER_01]: No, no, no, we don't want that.
- 32:03[SPEAKER_02]: But he's been able to get away with that and get more fans, more white fans than anything else.
- 32:11[SPEAKER_02]: So it's a crazy phenomenon.
- 32:13[SPEAKER_01]: Another piece about this limited series that's interesting, any other fallen angel is like a really bucksome blonde woman who's naked, like hair just covering her breasts through it.
- 32:23[SPEAKER_01]: You know, and she doesn't know who she is.
- 32:25[SPEAKER_01]: She doesn't know what to choose.
- 32:26[SPEAKER_01]: The only character who seems to have a very clear vision is Tom's body.
- 32:30[SPEAKER_01]: who throughout the series is appearing to Gambit almost as a spirit.
- 32:33[SPEAKER_01]: It's almost like she's like a Jiminy Cricket or the ghost that's like guiding in Gambit.
- 32:39[SPEAKER_01]: We have to do the Lord's works, boy, you move this direction.
- 32:42[SPEAKER_00]: She's definitely his conscience, but one of the things that I thought about was because she is appearing to him spiritually.
- 32:50[SPEAKER_00]: There's...
- 32:51[SPEAKER_00]: There's a part of me that wonders if she sort of asked really projecting herself to him to communicate with him.
- 32:57[SPEAKER_00]: Or is this gambit's own psyche manifesting Tonsumati as the person who he's taking advice from?
- 33:06[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, I think it's her, but I do understand the idea there, but I love that it's her actually because I don't know, I love that she's this woman behind the scenes pulling the strings as a black woman she is given a lot of power to be able to she's basically she's untouchable by both guilds if you think about it, she's basically higher than anyone if you want to talk about who really is leading the thieves and assassin guilds.
- 33:35[SPEAKER_00]: they respect her so much, they follow her word.
- 33:38[SPEAKER_00]: And I think that it's great to see her, to see a black woman in that position.
- 33:44[SPEAKER_00]: But at the same time, she's still sort of like demoted as in service of, or lack of a better term.
- 33:51[SPEAKER_01]: She's of the story, but not in the story.
- 33:54[SPEAKER_00]: Exactly.
- 33:54[SPEAKER_00]: Thank you.
- 33:55[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 33:55[SPEAKER_01]: Talking about healer, we've been talking about Voodoo versus Catholicism, by the way, we don't know if this character is a mutant, but we also have Tantamadi as a person who is very, I mean, she looks like she's a woman in her late 50s early 60s.
- 34:09[SPEAKER_01]: She's got a little bit of weight on her.
- 34:10[SPEAKER_01]: She talks about her creaking bones and that kind of thing, but she's well over 100 years old, which might be more old than Kendra.
- 34:17[SPEAKER_01]: And so, Kendra, as this white woman who's pulling the strings and manipulating events, giving out the elixir of life, but Tantamani is the healer who's kind of guiding everything through.
- 34:26[SPEAKER_01]: Let's jump to the road-limited series, not the upcoming one, written by my dear friend Erica Schultz, which I'm very excited about, but the original one, Rogue, this is the Cody Robbins thing.
- 34:34[SPEAKER_02]: Right, Rogue, Kister first boy, and now he's been in a coma ever since.
- 34:38[SPEAKER_01]: So in this series, at Belladana's request, Tantamati is looking in on Cody Robbins.
- 34:43[SPEAKER_01]: He's in a coma and Tantamati is always going to protect the vulnerable.
- 34:46[SPEAKER_01]: Belladana captures her kidnaps this boy as a revenge plot against rogue to her where it hurts.
- 34:52[SPEAKER_01]: Let me get her where she's vulnerable.
- 34:54[SPEAKER_01]: The captions tell us on the outskirts of the city of New Orleans within sight of Mississippi, sits a house built on death, a house of assassins.
- 35:02[SPEAKER_01]: Tantamati is now wearing lavender.
- 35:04[SPEAKER_01]: She's looking very worried.
- 35:05[SPEAKER_01]: She says,
- 35:06[SPEAKER_00]: This is no God.
- 35:07[SPEAKER_00]: The boy is going to die if you don't be letting him back into the hospital.
- 35:11[SPEAKER_00]: His body is full of sickness and too weak to fight it.
- 35:14[SPEAKER_00]: He needs a doctor's care.
- 35:15[SPEAKER_00]: You keep him here and you'll be responsible for his death.
- 35:18[SPEAKER_01]: Belladana says, uh, others that can be talking, excuse me, others that can be taking that responsibility time to Maddie.
- 35:24[SPEAKER_01]: So you just, uh, do what I tell you to do.
- 35:27[SPEAKER_01]: It says the foxy daughter.
- 35:30[SPEAKER_00]: Now don't you be talking that trash to round me child.
- 35:33[SPEAKER_00]: I don't care that you the biggest ass in later now.
- 35:35[SPEAKER_00]: I know you since you were a little girl Bella and I'm telling you, you've got to let this boy hear go.
- 35:40[SPEAKER_00]: He's done nothing to you.
- 35:41[SPEAKER_01]: Thoughts it?
- 35:42[SPEAKER_01]: I love you.
- 35:43[SPEAKER_01]: I respect your powers, but never question my authority again.
- 35:46[SPEAKER_01]: Now go at which woman I can't, which is nope.
- 35:52[SPEAKER_01]: If you can't be helping me, then you do nothing.
- 35:55[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not be doing your bidding bell.
- 35:57[SPEAKER_00]: And I won't let you kill this boy.
- 35:59[SPEAKER_00]: Someone's going to stab you, girl.
- 36:01[SPEAKER_00]: Someone.
- 36:01[SPEAKER_01]: I'm sure someone will try a ton to it.
- 36:03[SPEAKER_01]: I'm counting on it.
- 36:04[SPEAKER_01]: And I don't want to take it here.
- 36:05[SPEAKER_01]: But this is a little bit giving me the help, where Viola Davis is telling us.
- 36:09[SPEAKER_01]: Why girl, you as time, you as beautiful.
- 36:11[SPEAKER_01]: Now this girl is going up to be a bitch.
- 36:14[SPEAKER_01]: So, Tanta makes an appearance to rogue, forming herself out of pond water that takes on her form.
- 36:20[SPEAKER_01]: So again, she's got some power to like form herself.
- 36:23[SPEAKER_01]: She says to rogue.
- 36:24[SPEAKER_00]: Hush child, I don't have much time.
- 36:26[SPEAKER_00]: My Parisian what they once was.
- 36:28[SPEAKER_00]: Now you listen to me.
- 36:29[SPEAKER_00]: I know all about what Bella's gone and done.
- 36:32[SPEAKER_00]: I know about the beaten you got from Fiefle.
- 36:35[SPEAKER_00]: I know about the threats bell made against you and Gambit.
- 36:38[SPEAKER_00]: And I know about the boy Cody.
- 36:40[SPEAKER_00]: I don't want you to worry none about him.
- 36:42[SPEAKER_00]: The boys safe for now.
- 36:43[SPEAKER_00]: I'll see to that, but you got to be looking after your man.
- 36:46[SPEAKER_00]: Don't be acting coy with me, girl.
- 36:47[SPEAKER_00]: We've got no time for such nonsense.
- 36:50[SPEAKER_00]: You know who I'm talking about.
- 36:51[SPEAKER_00]: Remi is in danger.
- 36:52[SPEAKER_00]: You can't be letting him go.
- 36:54[SPEAKER_00]: Belle, she's just not right in her mind.
- 36:56[SPEAKER_00]: She hasn't been since she came out of that coma and she's the head of the guild that right now.
- 37:00[SPEAKER_00]: She's sending people assassins after gambit tonight.
- 37:03[SPEAKER_00]: I want you to go help Remi now, girl.
- 37:05[SPEAKER_00]: You hear me?
- 37:05[SPEAKER_00]: Bell is dangerous.
- 37:06[SPEAKER_00]: And if she thinks she can get to you because of him, you don't think I came all this way using up all my powers and wasn't planning on being some help to you.
- 37:15[SPEAKER_00]: I'll point you toward him.
- 37:16[SPEAKER_00]: The rest is up to you.
- 37:18[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm cutting out Rung's dialogue here, but Tanta is influencing events because she's seeing how bad it's going to go.
- 37:23[SPEAKER_01]: Later we see her sitting by Cody's bed again.
- 37:25[SPEAKER_01]: She says,
- 37:26[SPEAKER_00]: Don't you worry child, help us coming.
- 37:27[SPEAKER_01]: So Bella Donna comes into confront her.
- 37:29[SPEAKER_01]: You have betrayed me old woman, betrayed me to help her.
- 37:33[SPEAKER_01]: This ain't going to happen again.
- 37:35[SPEAKER_01]: I know she's coming down here.
- 37:36[SPEAKER_01]: And when she does, I'll be ready, ready and waiting.
- 37:40[SPEAKER_01]: Now there's a bunch of assassins shit happening through all this.
- 37:42[SPEAKER_01]: And we're not going to just delve it.
- 37:43[SPEAKER_01]: But there's assassins named Gregory.
- 37:45[SPEAKER_01]: is a very voodoo focused character that I almost did an episode on, but I then ended up here, uh, FIFA-lay, singer, quest, uh, these are all characters that might be mutants, or they might just be powered up by Kendra.
- 37:56[SPEAKER_01]: But they, they, they see that Kendra has gambit, Cody, and Tantamada captive.
- 38:01[SPEAKER_01]: and ends up being Belladona versus Rogue, Gambit breaks free.
- 38:04[SPEAKER_01]: Talk to a modicant tell that Cody is nearing death, and sure enough, Cody dies before the battle is over.
- 38:09[SPEAKER_01]: Rogue is in shock.
- 38:10[SPEAKER_01]: Cody's in her arms, obviously.
- 38:13[SPEAKER_01]: I'm keeping this slowly focused on Maddie.
- 38:16[SPEAKER_01]: Maddie says to Rogue and come for it.
- 38:17[SPEAKER_00]: The child is over.
- 38:18[SPEAKER_00]: The boy needs to go on to a better place.
- 38:21[SPEAKER_00]: There's nothing to do but let them go.
- 38:23[SPEAKER_00]: It's not right that you can't make your peace.
- 38:25[SPEAKER_00]: Say you're goodbyes.
- 38:26[SPEAKER_00]: I could help if you wanted.
- 38:27[SPEAKER_00]: Just breathe easy now.
- 38:28[SPEAKER_00]: Let it happen.
- 38:29[SPEAKER_00]: Let the light wash over you.
- 38:31[SPEAKER_01]: And at Tonomari's touch, Rogue is able to commune with Cody's spirit and see him on to the next life.
- 38:37[SPEAKER_00]: You can't blame yourself child.
- 38:39[SPEAKER_00]: His time was coming anyway.
- 38:40[SPEAKER_01]: So here we see her powers amplified.
- 38:42[SPEAKER_01]: She's a healer, but what does that mean?
- 38:45[SPEAKER_01]: So again, a question I'm going to be asking in a little while.
- 38:47[SPEAKER_01]: We're now going to jump into Niseez's volume three.
- 38:50[SPEAKER_01]: There's a character named Fontanelle, who is the daughter of the black womb.
- 38:54[SPEAKER_01]: It's truly crazy lore.
- 38:56[SPEAKER_01]: Go listen to the Fontanelle episode.
- 38:58[SPEAKER_01]: But she's jumping around in people's dreams.
- 39:00[SPEAKER_01]: She looks like
- 39:01[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, she's looks like an elderly dominatrix, like stage makeup, smoking cigarettes, while she's trying to figure out the truth about herself and Gamma.
- 39:11[SPEAKER_02]: Helen Mirrod, good player.
- 39:13[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, absolutely.
- 39:14[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 39:14[SPEAKER_01]: Helen Mirrod could do it, but would she?
- 39:18[SPEAKER_02]: It's kind of fun that day.
- 39:19[SPEAKER_01]: She's a little I almost almost want Merrill Streep to play fontanella now.
- 39:24[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, she could do for that boy need to be I would Um, so we get a series of flashbacks of Tantamati throughout this and I'm just going to kind of review these kind of quickly But we get a flashback the narration says again bit volume three number two
- 39:37[SPEAKER_01]: She can't run much longer, she's young, though she was only recently allowed to wear Kentiers, her first pair of shoes, the moccasins are hand me down and badly worn, her feet hurt, she's out of breath, they will catch her soon, unless she finds a refuge under the grace of God.
- 39:53[SPEAKER_01]: And we flash back, there's an image of a young black woman in a pale green dress running from a mob of white men who are carrying a noose.
- 40:00[SPEAKER_01]: Fontanelle is in the dreams of Tontamati,
- 40:02[SPEAKER_01]: conversing with this sobbing girl in the dream who is afraid for her life.
- 40:07[SPEAKER_01]: Fontanelle says it is on phalmsum to expect the traitor in training to hear someone as sick as dukely's budroi.
- 40:14[SPEAKER_00]: Who?
- 40:15[SPEAKER_01]: Oh I can understand, I understand your fear of tantamati, your frustration.
- 40:20[SPEAKER_00]: As you know, my weight, Saint John's Church, the Ma, I'm a little girl.
- 40:24[SPEAKER_00]: This is 1891.
- 40:24[SPEAKER_00]: I'm dreaming.
- 40:26[SPEAKER_01]: The camera cuts now to an older woman in leather, smoking in front of the church, cross, who just appears in the dream.
- 40:31[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, very good, child.
- 40:32[SPEAKER_02]: I do so rarely dreamscape anyone capable of realizing it.
- 40:36[SPEAKER_01]: Can't we front and out?
- 40:38[SPEAKER_01]: I am by profession, something of a therapist.
- 40:40[SPEAKER_01]: But for now, I've been consigned to play the part of detective.
- 40:43[SPEAKER_01]: You've learned much in your long life, taunt a matty.
- 40:45[SPEAKER_01]: But as interesting as it would be to scrape around your subconscious for a while, I'm here with very specific interests.
- 40:53[SPEAKER_00]: But if I know this is dream, why am I so scared?
- 40:57[SPEAKER_00]: Like, I really was.
- 40:58[SPEAKER_00]: They've been mad.
- 40:59[SPEAKER_00]: Do clues was powerful, Muglie, a church manan.
- 41:02[SPEAKER_00]: I told them I didn't have a powerful enough sachet to treat to heal him.
- 41:05[SPEAKER_01]: So she was a healer back in the 1890s.
- 41:08[SPEAKER_01]: A white man needs her to heal.
- 41:09[SPEAKER_01]: She says, I can't do it.
- 41:10[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not powerful enough.
- 41:11[SPEAKER_01]: Now he's sending a mob after her with a news to kill this young woman.
- 41:15[SPEAKER_01]: We'll talk to him soon.
- 41:17[SPEAKER_01]: Yep.
- 41:17[SPEAKER_01]: Frontanel says, and they didn't listen.
- 41:19[SPEAKER_01]: Brutes, here you are trapped with an angry mob closing in, I wonder.
- 41:24[SPEAKER_01]: Just how did you manage to survive and live to the ripe old age of what is it now?
- 41:28[SPEAKER_01]: 1928, and then right there at the Dream Gambit shows up to save her.
- 41:33[SPEAKER_01]: So there's a time-tamp traveling gambit who it's a whole story.
- 41:36[SPEAKER_01]: Nisi is a run who has a brief appearance in 1891 and saves this young woman from this mob.
- 41:43[SPEAKER_01]: Tantamadi says,
- 41:44[SPEAKER_00]: Is this what you wanted to find out about Remy Lobo?
- 41:47[SPEAKER_01]: Yup, which raises the delicious question did Gandett time travel to show up in 1891?
- 41:52[SPEAKER_01]: Is she a lot older than we think?
- 41:54[SPEAKER_01]: Ciao for no!
- 41:56[SPEAKER_01]: And talk to my, this is my favorite single moment for the character.
- 41:59[SPEAKER_01]: I love it.
- 42:00[SPEAKER_01]: She wakes up in bed, dead alert, and says, uh, wrinkles are back.
- 42:04[SPEAKER_00]: I'm awake.
- 42:05[SPEAKER_00]: She gone.
- 42:06[SPEAKER_00]: Remy, what kind of trouble you got yourself into this time?
- 42:08[SPEAKER_01]: This woman in her dream is young for a moment.
- 42:10[SPEAKER_01]: Her first one.
- 42:11[SPEAKER_01]: I'm waking up.
- 42:11[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, my wrinkles are back.
- 42:15[SPEAKER_01]: these are good again.
- 42:17[SPEAKER_01]: In issue 4, we jump to Slightel Louisiana.
- 42:20[SPEAKER_01]: The house has over looked Lake Pongchon train for 100 years, prime real estate, but the owner refuses to sell.
- 42:26[SPEAKER_01]: She watched her daddy build it with sweat and soul.
- 42:29[SPEAKER_01]: She's not about to give it up.
- 42:30[SPEAKER_01]: We see a small home, well-stocked with books and artifacts inside.
- 42:33[SPEAKER_01]: Tons of Maddie sits before a makeshift altar.
- 42:36[SPEAKER_01]: With a tribal mask, candles, and a skull on it, her hair is beaded intricately and in walks
- 42:43[SPEAKER_00]: That's so quiet, I don't know your hairboys.
- 42:46[SPEAKER_00]: You step between old pain and new problems, Remy.
- 42:48[SPEAKER_02]: Star in my life.
- 42:50[SPEAKER_02]: Why'd you ask me to meet you here, instead of nodding?
- 42:53[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, you just saw the Remy, do you some good?
- 42:56[SPEAKER_02]: Bump with the Bump with exhaust fumes on route 11 did trick.
- 42:59[SPEAKER_02]: Thanks so much.
- 43:01[SPEAKER_02]: You know how I feel about coming back home.
- 43:03[SPEAKER_02]: Time to money.
- 43:04[SPEAKER_02]: This better be important.
- 43:05[SPEAKER_01]: The caption still has the tons of Matty was as close to a mother as Gambit has ever known.
- 43:10[SPEAKER_01]: They also tell us the tons of Matty is a Cajun Tritur, a TR-A-I-T-I-E-U-R, a mystic and a healer.
- 43:19[SPEAKER_00]: Had a dream, someone was looking for you, name a fontanelle.
- 43:22[SPEAKER_01]: Uh, so she blows smoke rings, showing images of Fontanelle and the antiquary.
- 43:26[SPEAKER_01]: Don't worry about it.
- 43:27[SPEAKER_01]: Look that character up on your own.
- 43:29[SPEAKER_01]: That's a prophecy character that's involved in gamut being the savior child.
- 43:33[SPEAKER_01]: Jean-Luc Labo gambits dad steps out of the shadows with a boy in a school uniform named Jerome Mochea, who the antiquaries interested in.
- 43:41[SPEAKER_01]: And he says he was attacked by a vampire named Francois Chocolte.
- 43:44[SPEAKER_01]: Uh, some old assassins thieves guild history is brimming to the surface.
- 43:51[SPEAKER_01]: In issue 12, Gambit is summoned by the thieves guild and appears before Jean Luclabo and Tantamati.
- 43:57[SPEAKER_01]: Now Jean Luclabo has his own interesting history.
- 44:00[SPEAKER_01]: There's a scene in the series where Kendra strings him up as a boy to like whip him.
- 44:04[SPEAKER_01]: It's very Emma Frost with I don't know.
- 44:07[SPEAKER_01]: It's it's an uncomfortable image for sure.
- 44:09[SPEAKER_01]: In this issue, Tantamati is wearing purple and gold, hair, bearded.
- 44:13[SPEAKER_01]: She is sitting before a row of lit candles.
- 44:15[SPEAKER_01]: They're hosting a religious ceremony, the revelation of dead life.
- 44:18[SPEAKER_01]: And they let Remi know that they have a photograph that was taken of him over a hundred years ago.
- 44:23[SPEAKER_01]: He's a child of prophecy.
- 44:25[SPEAKER_01]: And all this is inspired Remi to go on a time traveling adventure into the past.
- 44:28[SPEAKER_01]: There's a lot of happens here.
- 44:30[SPEAKER_01]: In 16, we see the Boudreau Mansion on the Mississippi River.
- 44:34[SPEAKER_01]: Tantamati has a meeting with Bella Donna.
- 44:36[SPEAKER_01]: She says.
- 44:37[SPEAKER_00]: Thank you, Belladana, and the whole Assassin's Guild for indulging in old women.
- 44:41[SPEAKER_01]: Turns out that she heard Belladana took payment for the Assassin's Guild to go after Gambit, which was a problem, and Belladana says, you're as much a part of our clan as anyone here at Tantamati, though, understand why we've seen so little of you consider in the problems, the thieves guild faced in recent months.
- 44:57[SPEAKER_00]: About that, wish on Luke Lebowgon, the thieves guild is in disarray.
- 45:01[SPEAKER_00]: I know about your most recent contract.
- 45:03[SPEAKER_00]: It's a wrong child.
- 45:04[SPEAKER_00]: Now is the time for unity, Bell.
- 45:06[SPEAKER_00]: You take that contract, you'll tear the guild apart.
- 45:08[SPEAKER_01]: You prefer I help to reunite the gills for the first time in thousands of years, like my marriage to Remy was supposed to have done, that it'd be nice, taunts her, and no disrespect intended, you are our trade tour, our healer.
- 45:21[SPEAKER_01]: As much a mom, it's most of us, as our real mothers were, but to the assassin's guilt, a contract is a sacred bond.
- 45:27[SPEAKER_01]: And because of that, Remy Labo is as good as dead, and she lights a wedding photo of her in
- 45:34[SPEAKER_01]: In 17, we jumped a man, Hatton, Tantamati is sitting at the, before the remains of the New Orleans thieves guild, thinking of herself as their mother figure.
- 45:42[SPEAKER_01]: The harvest master, again, in Fiora and Marso, the harvest disseminator, Jeanaud Aluet, Zoe Ischihar is here, Ema Leipin, Claude Poitier, Mercy Lebo, the sister-in-law gambit.
- 45:53[SPEAKER_01]: These are all characters, the Nisea's is weaving in and out.
- 45:56[SPEAKER_01]: And Tantamati is tending to gambit who was stabbed through the abdomen by bullsye, because the assassins put a head out on him.
- 46:03[SPEAKER_01]: Remi's power has been amped way up, so that warning I gave earlier, that's what this is building toward.
- 46:08[SPEAKER_01]: And someone is after him.
- 46:09[SPEAKER_01]: Belladana attacks with her assassins, Greek grief, faithfully, singer, and quest stuff.
- 46:13[SPEAKER_01]: And they hold the guild briefly, and Deadpool intervenes, and there's a huge explosion, and Remi and Belladana get buried alive.
- 46:21[SPEAKER_01]: But Tantamati praise and can feel that they are still alive.
- 46:24[SPEAKER_01]: And when they return, they announce that there will now be peace between the guilds.
- 46:27[SPEAKER_01]: I'm jumping through a lot.
- 46:29[SPEAKER_01]: Tantamati says,
- 46:30[SPEAKER_00]: This is Joyce News, the series for Told of a Guild Unification that would lead to the resurrection of the Old Kingdom.
- 46:37[SPEAKER_01]: In 21, we see what we call the unveiling ceremony, deep in the Assassin's Guild headquarters, where the ministers, formerly of the Antiquaries clan, who are now incorporated into the unified guild,
- 46:48[SPEAKER_01]: Uh, Gregory is here, known as the first kill, Fiora and Marso is the Harvest Master, Belledana, Tons and Maddie.
- 46:54[SPEAKER_01]: They are all invoking the prayers to conclude the ceremony.
- 46:57[SPEAKER_01]: And they take a small casket out of the deepest vault.
- 47:00[SPEAKER_01]: One that's been there for over 200 years, prophesied to be opened on this day, to reveal the true history of the falling out between the clans.
- 47:08[SPEAKER_01]: But they find the casket empty, which I think fucking can't do a plan the whole time.
- 47:13[SPEAKER_01]: Gambit wonders of maybe there's no mystery at all.
- 47:16[SPEAKER_01]: Tantamati hopes that she did not help raise a fool.
- 47:19[SPEAKER_01]: It's revealed that Gambit's the prophesied Messiah to the groups, but it turns out that Jean Luc Labo has ordered the contents of the box destroyed.
- 47:26[SPEAKER_01]: And this puts Remi's leadership of the clan in question.
- 47:29[SPEAKER_01]: There's a vote to put Gambit in charge or not.
- 47:33[SPEAKER_01]: And Tantamati votes.
- 47:35[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and and won't anyone who won't give this boy a fair chance to walk us down the righteous path.
- 47:41[SPEAKER_01]: Bella casts the deciding vote in favor of Revy, and he now becomes out as the leader of both the assassins and the thieves guild who are unified.
- 47:50[SPEAKER_01]: It is not lasted, but that's where we're going to wrap the conversation about this series up, even though it continues on from there.
- 47:56[SPEAKER_01]: The only place we see Tantamati in modern history is in the incredible series, Mr. and Mrs. X.
- 48:02[SPEAKER_01]: It ends in, this is Rogan Gambit's, Mr. and Mrs. Smith adventure, right?
- 48:06[SPEAKER_01]: They're having adventures across the X-Men universe.
- 48:09[SPEAKER_01]: And in the final issue, Tantamati shows up.
- 48:12[SPEAKER_01]: Jean-Luc is here as well.
- 48:14[SPEAKER_01]: They're reunited with Rogan Remi, who are now married.
- 48:16[SPEAKER_01]: Tantamati is a bit heavier.
- 48:17[SPEAKER_01]: She's in pink, she has an apron on, she says.
- 48:20[SPEAKER_00]: When we child, I swore I was going to yell at you, but I'm just so happy to see you.
- 48:24[SPEAKER_02]: And thank God for that.
- 48:25[SPEAKER_02]: It's good to see you talking, buddy.
- 48:27[SPEAKER_02]: I'm sorry.
- 48:28[SPEAKER_02]: It's been so long.
- 48:29[SPEAKER_02]: And I'm about to win.
- 48:30[SPEAKER_00]: Hush, now.
- 48:30[SPEAKER_00]: Bro, girl, marriage agrees with you.
- 48:32[SPEAKER_00]: You're positively glowing.
- 48:34[SPEAKER_01]: It's been too long.
- 48:35[SPEAKER_01]: I'm sorry.
- 48:36[SPEAKER_00]: Enough with the apologies, or we'll waste our whole time saying sorry.
- 48:39[SPEAKER_00]: Although.
- 48:40[SPEAKER_01]: Oh no.
- 48:41[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not usually the kind to push a thing on a sweet young couple, but as punishment for the lack of visits and lack of wedding invite, I'm going to go on ahead and ask when I can expect to hear the pitter-patter of little feet.
- 48:51[SPEAKER_00]: Any time soon?
- 48:52[SPEAKER_02]: Talk to the body.
- 48:53[SPEAKER_02]: We can barely survive our own honeymoon, and you think it's safe for babies?
- 48:57[SPEAKER_01]: Roaks is ha!
- 48:58[SPEAKER_01]: Remi's kiddo when he says that, taunt a matty, although it's funny you should mention babies as Remi's been seeing imaginary children just about everywhere, might be a sign.
- 49:08[SPEAKER_01]: And that's the last time we've seen her.
- 49:10[SPEAKER_01]: So, okay, I'm in a lot of few questions your way.
- 49:12[SPEAKER_01]: We just covered a lot.
- 49:13[SPEAKER_01]: They'll talk to us a little bit about the flashbacks we see.
- 49:16[SPEAKER_01]: We hear Tons of Motties determination through the narration to keep the house she saw her father built.
- 49:21[SPEAKER_01]: We see her as a young girl as a patron of this church where because she can't heal someone they chaser down with nooses.
- 49:28[SPEAKER_01]: We have the time-tambric traveling gambit that saves her.
- 49:30[SPEAKER_01]: There's not a lot there, but there's a lot of work with there, which is fascinating.
- 49:34[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, there's a thing though that they do with these characters where they make them kind of passive in a way, right?
- 49:43[SPEAKER_02]: Like they're forgiving.
- 49:44[SPEAKER_02]: Like even even with Bella Down and if you're giving for all the bad things they do, and I went sometimes I wonder when I watch something where there's these horrible people that do these horrible things, and then look,
- 49:55[SPEAKER_02]: The good guys are supposed to like go and kill them and they don't because they're stopped by like a tattoo body who says You know, we need peace more than anything else.
- 50:05[SPEAKER_02]: It feels like it's a guilt thing to kind of be like I don't I don't want these characters to be too powerful or too aggressive.
- 50:14[SPEAKER_02]: I mean black characters the black woman to stop
- 50:17[SPEAKER_02]: the violence over and over to always want peace above everything else and time the body lets Bella down and get away with a lot of shit that she does throughout you know the way she talks to her the way she tries to kill Gambit all these times the way to shit she did the robes was after like it's just that she was used to forgive like my time the body is always the forgiving one and every scene that she's used and I don't know it just makes me think about that every time I see that in the story.
- 50:43[SPEAKER_01]: He's not the character of focus, but I feel like she knows a lot more about what's going on.
- 50:46[SPEAKER_01]: So, Eric, I love this one your way.
- 50:48[SPEAKER_01]: This is not canon, but it fucking fits.
- 50:51[SPEAKER_01]: Gillesumone just last year in uncanny X-Men gave us the character Henry at a Benjamin, who is a black woman, who's the victim of racism, who comes to this area like Haven House.
- 51:01[SPEAKER_01]: There's this whole thing about black people, who are different, who are mutants.
- 51:05[SPEAKER_01]: They don't call them mutants.
- 51:06[SPEAKER_01]: who are there and there's a deal made which opens that dark artery and now she's like the guardian of Penumbra, the realm of the dead and it's right there and it's very voodoo focused and it's very connected.
- 51:18[SPEAKER_01]: I love the idea of Tons of Maddie being connected to this realm and having this ability to channel this space.
- 51:27[SPEAKER_01]: It's not canon but I think it's just it's right there.
- 51:29[SPEAKER_02]: He gave it to seeing children, right?
- 51:31[SPEAKER_02]: Like what if he's seeing these children?
- 51:33[SPEAKER_02]: Like that's what I was thinking too.
- 51:35[SPEAKER_02]: And when I went that part again and then I thought about it again, it was all these years that what if he's seeing all these children he's supposed to help in the future and they were like giving him a message.
- 51:45[SPEAKER_01]: I love that like Maddie could have entered Penombo, but it's chosen to stay alive and like doing this because she sees this vision, these prophecies.
- 51:53[SPEAKER_01]: Or even if she has access to ancient prophecy,
- 51:56[SPEAKER_00]: I wonder what would happen if she did enter her number in the sense that would she lose some of the power that she has now, or would she lose the ability to communicate as easily as she does, would would that change her in some way?
- 52:10[SPEAKER_00]: But I love the fact that she is still, I mean, in this last Mr. Mrs. X, she kind of has like the, what's the phrase where she's like,
- 52:20[SPEAKER_00]: you know, just like, ancient my mom will kind of thing like, oh, look at you too.
- 52:24[SPEAKER_00]: What am I going to get babies?
- 52:26[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, for a kind of thing.
- 52:27[SPEAKER_00]: Versus her actually having something I think more significant to say.
- 52:32[SPEAKER_00]: Like, I think it would have been interesting.
- 52:34[SPEAKER_00]: And this is no shade to the series, but I think it would have been interesting if instead of having this like give me babies thing, she almost had like a prophecy for them.
- 52:44[SPEAKER_00]: Like, today's your happy day, but just realize that like, shit's coming down the pipe.
- 52:48[SPEAKER_01]: I almost wonder if, again, this has to be a future story, but she knows like their child has a certain prophecy in relation to something.
- 52:56[SPEAKER_01]: She's been gently manipulating events toward the birth of the child of Rogan Gavit, which is also interesting.
- 53:02[SPEAKER_01]: Do we want to comment on this scene with her being pursued with the group with the news?
- 53:06[SPEAKER_01]: The white man from the future having to save her is not my favorite.
- 53:09[SPEAKER_02]: No, that's what I meant by that aggressive you know like they don't want her to be too aggressive instead of you know fighting those those people off instead you get Remi coming in to be the hero to save the day with that.
- 53:22[SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, so she could be a magic user
- 53:26[SPEAKER_01]: She could be a mutant.
- 53:28[SPEAKER_01]: She could be both, right?
- 53:29[SPEAKER_01]: She has these connections to kind of voodoo and mysticism, but also Catholicism and faith.
- 53:35[SPEAKER_01]: So she feels a couple different tropes here.
- 53:37[SPEAKER_01]: She's the healer.
- 53:38[SPEAKER_01]: She's the mother.
- 53:39[SPEAKER_01]: She's the woman of faith, but she's also the manipulator behind the scenes.
- 53:43[SPEAKER_01]: And I think there's some fascinating potential for this character, who my favorite thing about her is her fondness for the week or the vulnerable.
- 53:51[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 53:51[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, she looks for the best in everyone.
- 53:53[SPEAKER_01]: She sees where the sign is and guides events toward a particular place.
- 53:57[SPEAKER_01]: So when the angel falls to earth, she's gonna help that angel figure out what to do.
- 54:01[SPEAKER_01]: But in a more subtle space, she's working with some of the most dangerous people on the planet.
- 54:06[SPEAKER_01]: It's the biggest narcissistic ego maniacal people.
- 54:09[SPEAKER_01]: But she's the one kind of twisting events in particular directions.
- 54:13[SPEAKER_01]: Do we have thoughts on her potential?
- 54:14[SPEAKER_01]: I think she's fucking great.
- 54:15[SPEAKER_01]: I liked this character so much.
- 54:16[SPEAKER_02]: It totally did a great version of this in sinners with Annie.
- 54:20[SPEAKER_02]: Oh yeah, you could see that she'd had all these adventures learning from all these different, you know, women who also dealt with the mystics arts and taught her all these things that she used in the movie.
- 54:33[SPEAKER_02]: But any is assertive.
- 54:35[SPEAKER_02]: She doesn't wait to be saved in the movie, like she cares.
- 54:39[SPEAKER_02]: She loves people.
- 54:40[SPEAKER_02]: She's protective.
- 54:41[SPEAKER_02]: Like I loved how cool there was like we can do all that in all the nurturing stuff, but we can still make her a badass.
- 54:48[SPEAKER_02]: who can kill vampires at the same time and knows what to do.
- 54:51[SPEAKER_02]: Like, that's the part that I would love to see more of a character written that way.
- 54:56[SPEAKER_01]: Like a character with like a lot of deep grief, but like a ton of power if she channels it right.
- 55:01[SPEAKER_01]: I love that read on her.
- 55:03[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I would love to see that.
- 55:04[SPEAKER_00]: I think that you were saying, is she a metric user, is she a mutant, is she both, I have to wonder if she, I think the scene of her chase being chased as a young girl and her saying I'm just not powerful enough that kind of makes me feel as if she might be a mutant because if she's like 12 13 years old and she might have gotten a hint of mutant power that she has but it hasn't but she hasn't learned how to
- 55:30[SPEAKER_00]: truly harness it and how to truly manifest what is what it is she wants to do.
- 55:36[SPEAKER_00]: And I wonder if she was immune and then started learning the mystic arts as a way to amplify her mutinability but also as a way to help try and understand her mutin ability more.
- 55:50[SPEAKER_01]: The one version of this character I will not accept, but I hope no one ever does it.
- 55:53[SPEAKER_01]: This character is not over a hundred years old because Kendra gave her a potion.
- 55:58[SPEAKER_01]: That is the version I want to expect.
- 55:59[SPEAKER_01]: But we don't know the origin of the elixir of life, either.
- 56:02[SPEAKER_01]: This is giving people powers handed out by Kendra.
- 56:05[SPEAKER_01]: I love the idea of Tantamati being connected to this deep lore.
- 56:09[SPEAKER_01]: If you guys have read strange academy in the last few years, there's a ton of
- 56:13[SPEAKER_01]: like New Orleans, Voodoo, mixed in with the Dr. Voodoo stuff there and these kids that are making deals with these people in the shadows.
- 56:19[SPEAKER_01]: And then there's the the Penumbra underneath it all with Gail.
- 56:22[SPEAKER_01]: There's a there's some there's a fertile ground for this area to be like a lead character in a title or even like the the leader of some sort of team of mutants or mistakes.
- 56:33[SPEAKER_01]: I want her as more than just the the old mother of woman who comes into like be kind at people's heads, right?
- 56:42[SPEAKER_01]: I don't want help version of taunt of body as well.
- 56:44[SPEAKER_01]: I want like her kick it ass.
- 56:46[SPEAKER_01]: I think she's cool.
- 56:47[SPEAKER_00]: I think that what you were saying is about her leading a group.
- 56:52[SPEAKER_00]: I think that would be pretty amazing.
- 56:54[SPEAKER_00]: If something happens, we're broken gambit, have to take time off.
- 56:58[SPEAKER_00]: from the Louisiana X-Men you have tons of money there to be like oh yeah I'm not just here to babysit I'm here to kick all your asses I'm here to show you what you can do I'm here to make you better I think that would be pretty awesome yeah it gives also given us this family that's like living at Hayden House with the X-Men these characters of color who are almost kind of filling that role of like we're where the caretakers who there's a lot of potential but they're
- 57:24[SPEAKER_01]: Maddie, what is Maddie short for?
- 57:26[SPEAKER_01]: It could be Matilda.
- 57:27[SPEAKER_01]: It could be Martha.
- 57:28[SPEAKER_01]: It could be there's a lot of options here as well.
- 57:30[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah Maddie could have been training these kids too because you could have been helping to train them because she would understand their powers more since they're not mutants per se but a little bit more than that.
- 57:41[SPEAKER_02]: I think she would be great if she was in the story.
- 57:43[SPEAKER_01]: So I hope this has been fun for everyone.
- 57:45[SPEAKER_01]: The border between good and evil, the border between voodoo and Catholicism, the border between mutant and magic, the border between the thieves guild and the assassins guild.
- 57:55[SPEAKER_01]: There's just a tremendous amount of potential for this character.
- 57:58[SPEAKER_01]: And I hope someone hears this.
- 57:59[SPEAKER_01]: It decides to do something with her.
- 58:01[SPEAKER_01]: America Shelts is right here.
- 58:04[SPEAKER_01]: I love you both.
