- 1:16Speaker 1: We do the occasional bickram Hot yoga class here in
- 1:20Speaker 1: New York City, and I was sitting down with Marcus
- 1:22Speaker 1: and Tebby, the founder of Juice Press, and he suggested, Hey,
- 1:27Speaker 1: why don't you.
- 1:28Speaker 2: Sit down with my friend Jeff. Well, yeah, he's one
- 1:32Speaker 2: of a kind.
- 1:32Speaker 1: And it's so funny because born and raised in the
- 1:34Speaker 1: New York area, but talking to him, you'd swear.
- 1:38Speaker 2: The guy was from the West Coast.
- 1:40Speaker 1: He studied at New York City's School of the Visual Arts,
- 1:43Speaker 1: but the last thing.
- 1:44Speaker 2: He wanted to do after college was get a job
- 1:46Speaker 2: in graphic design.
- 1:47Speaker 1: After tackling his first tandem jump with friends, he was
- 1:51Speaker 1: absolutely hooked, and in today's episode, we talk about the
- 1:54Speaker 1: hurdle moment he faced postcrad deving head first put intended
- 1:58Speaker 1: into his passions, relocating to Arizona and buying a trailer
- 2:01Speaker 1: to work at the Number one skydive school in the country.
- 2:04Speaker 1: This guy's one of the pioneers of the high speed,
- 2:07Speaker 1: high stakes skydiving discipline of swooping and just can't get enough.
- 2:12Speaker 1: We talk about a lot of good things today, including
- 2:14Speaker 1: how he hooked up with the Red Bull Air Force,
- 2:17Speaker 1: what it's like to train government agents, and the insane
- 2:20Speaker 1: jump heeded landing on a barge in the Hudson River. Yeah,
- 2:24Speaker 1: this one's all sorts of interesting. As always, head up
- 2:27Speaker 1: Hurdle on Twitter, on Instagram, on Facebook. I love getting

- 2:49Speaker 1: dot us and today I'm just going to get right
- 2:52Speaker 1: to it with that. Let's get to hurdling. I am
- 3:02Speaker 1: so amped to be sitting here with Jeff Provenzano. He's
- 3:05Speaker 1: a good friend of mine and he's also a skydiver
- 3:07Speaker 1: and Red Bull sponsored athlete.
- 3:10Speaker 2: Yeah, what's going on? Man?
- 3:11Speaker 3: What's up? Emily? How you doing?
- 3:13Speaker 2: I'm great.
- 3:13Speaker 1: Jeff and I usually get to connect in New York City,
- 3:16Speaker 1: but we're both on the West Coast, so why not
- 3:18Speaker 1: do it here right now?
- 3:19Speaker 3: I know, this is awesome.
- 3:20Speaker 2: This is awesome and it's so funny.
- 3:22Speaker 1: I actually, uh, last week sat down with Marcus and
- 3:26Speaker 1: Tebby and Marcus was like, you need to sit down
- 3:28Speaker 1: with Jeff, and I thought, I sit down with Jeff sometimes,
- 3:32Speaker 1: but we never sit down for hurdles. So now's the time.
- 3:34Speaker 1: Oh cool, now's the time, Now's the time. He had
- 3:37Speaker 1: very good things to say about.
- 3:38Speaker 3: You, Marcus. Yeah, oh man, I've known that guy for
- 3:41Speaker 3: a long time.
- 3:42Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:42Speaker 3: Yeah, he's a good dude.
- 3:44Speaker 2: He says, you guys do is a yoga together?
- 3:45Speaker 3: Yes? Yeah, we'll do a little bit of you know,
- 3:48Speaker 3: we used to work out a little bit together too.
- 3:50Speaker 3: But I've known I've known that guy for years and years,
- 3:54Speaker 3: and he's awesome. He's motivation, yeah for me, and I
- 3:59Speaker 3: like to think into his creative mind from time to time.
- 4:02Speaker 3: It's always good when I hit a roadblock. He's one
- 4:04Speaker 3: of the guys I'll call at like seven am.
- 4:07Speaker 2: You know, seven am, I need your help wake up?
- 4:11Speaker 1: Yeah, okay, So what I feel like I need to
- 4:15Speaker 1: start this out by saying, a I've never skydived, and
- 4:18Speaker 1: be it frightens the hell out of me when you
- 4:22Speaker 1: first when you first started skydiving, and we'll get into
- 4:25Speaker 1: how this all kind of came to be your career path.
- 4:27Speaker 2: But were you scared?
- 4:29Speaker 3: Absolutely?
- 4:30Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, totally.
- 4:31Speaker 3: It's like I think it's not I think if you're
- 4:34Speaker 3: not scared, something's wrong with you. Yeah, definitely should go
- 4:37Speaker 3: get checked out.
- 4:38Speaker 2: You know. I think heights are probably like my top
- 4:42Speaker 2: thing that I'm nervous about.
- 4:43Speaker 3: I think most people, to be honest, Yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 4:46Speaker 3: it's it's it's interesting. Actually a few of my friends
- 4:49Speaker 3: who are professional, like my team, not just friends, but
- 4:51Speaker 3: like my teammates, like guys just like me, are deathly
- 4:56Speaker 3: afraid of heights. Yeah, but yet they have twenty thousand
- 4:59Speaker 3: plus and thousand plus bass jumps.
- 5:02Speaker 2: How many dives do you have now?
- 5:03Speaker 3: Twenty thousand?
- 5:04Speaker 2: Oh, just twenty.
- 5:06Speaker 1: Thousand times that I jumped out of a plan. Yeah,
- 5:10Speaker 1: oh my goodness. Okay, So let's rewind it back a
- 5:12Speaker 1: little bit and start from the beginning.
- 5:15Speaker 2: The beginning the beginning man.
- 5:17Speaker 3: Like the dinosaurs.
- 5:18Speaker 1: I mean, maybe not the dinosaurs, but maybe skydiving.
- 5:23Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, well, you know what. To be honest, it
- 5:25Speaker 3: was just something I saw on TV. Actually, do you
- 5:28Speaker 3: remember point break? Yeah, yeah, of course, right point break
- 5:32Speaker 3: soft point break, And I was like, oh my god,
- 5:35Speaker 3: I have to do that.
- 5:36Speaker 1: Where are you living at the time, New York? Okay, yeah,
- 5:39Speaker 1: are you from there originally?
- 5:40Speaker 3: Yeah, I grew up outside the city in Westchester County.
- 5:43Speaker 3: And yeah, I saw that on you know whatever in
- 5:48Speaker 3: the movie. And I also saw it on it was
- 5:50Speaker 3: a TV show called MTV Sports Yeap with Dan Cortez. Yeah,
- 5:53Speaker 3: he was the host, and they did a little like
- 5:56Speaker 3: segment once on bass jumping and skydiving, and actually it
- 6:01Speaker 3: was just base jumping, to be honest, but parachute. All
- 6:03Speaker 3: I saw was a parachute. I was like, oh my god,
- 6:05Speaker 3: I gotta do that. That looks sick.
- 6:07Speaker 1: Before we jump into this unintended skydiving coming out of
- 6:12Speaker 1: a plane.
- 6:13Speaker 2: Yes, base jumping.
- 6:15Speaker 3: Off of objects like bridges, buildings, okay, cliffs.
- 6:19Speaker 2: Do you have to get a permit for all of
- 6:21Speaker 2: that stuff?
- 6:22Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean if you're jumping off of a building, yeah,
- 6:24Speaker 3: for sure. But there's plenty of you know, national land
- 6:28Speaker 3: out there that it's completely legal. Yeah, you could just
- 6:31Speaker 3: you know, go out hike around and jump off something.
- 6:33Speaker 1: I feel like that you would have to be slightly
- 6:36Speaker 1: more out of your mind to base jump than skydive.
- 6:40Speaker 3: A little bit, a little bit. And I think in
- 6:42Speaker 3: the beginning, you know, because not knowing anything about either
- 6:47Speaker 3: of those sports, people are just attracted to, you know,
- 6:51Speaker 3: whatever like looks cooler or whatever. And I think with
- 6:54Speaker 3: base jumping over the last few years and wingsuit base jumping,
- 6:58Speaker 3: everyone's seen d of you know, wing suits flying past
- 7:02Speaker 3: mountains and stuff, and I think I think people just
- 7:06Speaker 3: kind of gravitate towards base jumping right away, like I
- 7:08Speaker 3: want to do that. Like that's when it when they
- 7:10Speaker 3: when they kind of like do their homework and and
- 7:13Speaker 3: and find out that you have to learn how to
- 7:15Speaker 3: skydive first in order to base jump.
- 7:17Speaker 2: And when you find that out, yeah, how do you feel?
- 7:21Speaker 3: Well, some people are like, oh, well, you know, yeah,
- 7:24Speaker 3: they're they're not too stoked on you know, the level
- 7:26Speaker 3: of commitment that they have to entraining and preparation that
- 7:29Speaker 3: they have to put towards learning how to base jump,
- 7:31Speaker 3: and then you know, through that process, once you do
- 7:34Speaker 3: learn how to skyt dive and you you know, you
- 7:36Speaker 3: kind of dive into it and you you do your
- 7:38Speaker 3: first uh you know, you get your license, so you
- 7:41Speaker 3: start to learn the difference between scotving and base jumping
- 7:44Speaker 3: and how much more like exponentially, like twenty times more
- 7:48Speaker 3: dangerous base jumping is, yeah, sure to skydiving. But you know,
- 7:52Speaker 3: these are all things that without the knowledge of the
- 7:56Speaker 3: sport and really what it's about and all the details
- 7:59Speaker 3: of it, you would never know that that it's really more.
- 8:02Speaker 1: Dangerous, right right, Okay, so you see this movie and
- 8:07Speaker 1: you're like, I've got to go skydiving basically.
- 8:10Speaker 2: And how does one even start to get into skydiving?
- 8:13Speaker 3: So for me at the time, we're going back nineteen
- 8:18Speaker 3: ninety five, I found the skydiving center in the Yellow Pages.
- 8:22Speaker 3: Just with three buddies of mine from high school. We
- 8:25Speaker 3: basically just drove up to the skydiving center.
- 8:28Speaker 2: And it's expensive, isn't it.
- 8:29Speaker 3: Yeah it was. I don't remember how much it costs
- 8:31Speaker 3: back then, but you know, yeah, it's not a cheap sport.
- 8:35Speaker 3: This is a really really expensive sport, especially for like,
- 8:37Speaker 3: you know, a kid, right, when I was eighteen and
- 8:41Speaker 3: had no money to like pool together one hundred or
- 8:44Speaker 3: two hundred bucks to go make a tandem skydive with
- 8:47Speaker 3: your friends. I mean that was like, that was a
- 8:49Speaker 3: major thing for me at the time.
- 8:51Speaker 2: So so you go for your first time with your
- 8:53Speaker 2: buddies sick.
- 8:54Speaker 3: I went from the first time with my buddies really
- 8:56Speaker 3: with the intention of making one and only skydive. Yeah,
- 9:00Speaker 3: And immediately as I when I landed, I walked straight
- 9:04Speaker 3: to the school and was like, yo, I gotta do
- 9:08Speaker 3: this again. What's what's the deal? I see people out here.
- 9:12Speaker 3: They're jumping, They're going up and down, up and down,
- 9:15Speaker 3: up and down all day long. Yeah, I wanted, yeah,
- 9:18Speaker 3: you know.
- 9:19Speaker 2: And you're so you're in high school at this point,
- 9:21Speaker 2: you're graduating.
- 9:22Speaker 3: I graduated already. I was just finished my first year
- 9:24Speaker 3: of college.
- 9:25Speaker 2: Actually okay, yeah, I was just And where were you
- 9:27Speaker 2: at school?
- 9:28Speaker 3: School? Visual Arts Street did four years there. It was awesome.
- 9:36Speaker 1: So you're in college and you're getting hooked on skydiving,
- 9:39Speaker 1: and you're talking to people at the school, and what
- 9:41Speaker 1: do they tell you.
- 9:42Speaker 3: They're like, oh, yeah, basically, it's you know, half your
- 9:45Speaker 3: bank account or all of it. And every weekend of
- 9:48Speaker 3: your life from here on in, you know, at the middle,
- 9:51Speaker 3: because two things it's got, you know, it's it's time
- 9:53Speaker 3: and money. Like definitely it costs both. Yeah, you know,
- 9:58Speaker 3: you need to spend a lot of time. And it's
- 10:02Speaker 3: not cheap anything aviation is not cheap, right once you
- 10:05Speaker 3: start bringing airplanes into the mix. And because you have
- 10:09Speaker 3: to pay every time you go up on a jump,
- 10:12Speaker 3: it's another ticket. It's not like you don't get a
- 10:13Speaker 3: season pass to make it cheaper. So each jump costs.
- 10:18Speaker 3: And then you know, all the gear and then traveling
- 10:21Speaker 3: to you know, that all goes along with it to
- 10:23Speaker 3: get to these different destinations.
- 10:25Speaker 2: Do you remember distinctively what that first jump really felt like?
- 10:31Speaker 3: Yeah, I remember, well, it was very scared in the plane,
- 10:34Speaker 3: very nervous. Thank god I was strapped to some dude,
- 10:37Speaker 3: because if I had to jump out of my own
- 10:39Speaker 3: I would have never probably done it. Like I was
- 10:42Speaker 3: that nervous for sure, But you're kind of you know,
- 10:43Speaker 3: you're strapped to dude. He's just kind of like pushing
- 10:45Speaker 3: you towards the door. You're just holding onto your own harness.
- 10:48Speaker 3: And when he says you're ready, even if you say no.
- 10:53Speaker 3: I think it sounds like go in the airplane when
- 10:56Speaker 3: it's really loud. So that's all he hears is be
- 10:58Speaker 3: you ready, no, go okay.
- 11:01Speaker 2: And he pushes you out, He pushes you out.
- 11:04Speaker 3: All I remember was seeing the airplane. We did like
- 11:06Speaker 3: a flip, and I remember seeing the airplane like falling
- 11:09Speaker 3: away from the plane, and I can see it, like
- 11:11Speaker 3: catch a glimpse of the plane, and I'm like, oh
- 11:14Speaker 3: my god, yeah, there it go, like that's my life,
- 11:17Speaker 3: that's that's my boat, that's my Life's like I don't
- 11:20Speaker 3: know how to swim. I don't know how to fly.
- 11:21Speaker 3: Like yeah, it's like being in the ocean. All of
- 11:23Speaker 3: a sudden you just jumped off a boat into the
- 11:25Speaker 3: water and you don't know how to swim. That's how
- 11:27Speaker 3: I felt, just looking back at this plane falling away
- 11:29Speaker 3: from it, going like oh my god. And then I
- 11:32Speaker 3: remember feeling like at that moment like okay, like accept it,
- 11:37Speaker 3: you know, yeah, like the fear kind of went away
- 11:41Speaker 3: right right around that time, like five or six seconds
- 11:43Speaker 3: after after we jumped out. I just remember like, well,
- 11:47Speaker 3: you're here. Now you're falling. You can't unfall.
- 11:51Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean I feel like that kind of tether
- 11:54Speaker 1: is to a really big life less time that I've
- 11:56Speaker 1: been trying to appreciate lately, which is when shit hits
- 12:01Speaker 1: the fan. Sometimes you just need to accept that that's happening,
- 12:05Speaker 1: and instead of being if only this wasn't happening, be like, Okay,
- 12:09Speaker 1: this is happening.
- 12:10Speaker 2: What do I actually have control over?
- 12:13Speaker 1: And sometimes it might be nothing like in this instance,
- 12:15Speaker 1: all you had control over was your mind.
- 12:18Speaker 3: Yeah no, literally at that point it was like you
- 12:22Speaker 3: you're you're not doing anything.
- 12:24Speaker 2: Yeah no, that's just just just just what's happening.
- 12:27Speaker 1: So you they tell you that it's going to be
- 12:30Speaker 1: all this money and all this time, and you're a
- 12:33Speaker 1: full time.
- 12:34Speaker 2: College student at the time. Yeah, so what happened?
- 12:38Speaker 3: So I just you know, picked up a few extra
- 12:40Speaker 3: shifts and I was delivering some pizzas and I was
- 12:44Speaker 3: actually working at a golf course on the weekends caddying,
- 12:48Speaker 3: So I just tried to pick up as many extra
- 12:51Speaker 3: loops as I could do out there, and I was
- 12:53Speaker 3: working at an ad agency, so yeah, whatever extra work
- 12:56Speaker 3: I could do, freelancing, doing any kind of freelance art
- 12:59Speaker 3: work at the time to like everything, like I just
- 13:03Speaker 3: Scott having almost immediately became very, very very important in
- 13:08Speaker 3: my life to a point where like I didn't know
- 13:11Speaker 3: I was going to do it, as you know, I
- 13:12Speaker 3: didn't think it was going to become a lifelong thing
- 13:14Speaker 3: or career. But at that time, it was like, I
- 13:17Speaker 3: have to do whatever it takes to get in the
- 13:20Speaker 3: sky again. Yeah, get back in the air.
- 13:22Speaker 2: Yeah, okay, So you start skydiving more, so.
- 13:25Speaker 3: I start skotdving more. I do it when I can,
- 13:28Speaker 3: you know, like, yeah, I'm in school, I'm juggling school
- 13:30Speaker 3: jobs and trying to make time to go Scottive once,
- 13:35Speaker 3: you know, ideally once a week, which was impossible. It
- 13:38Speaker 3: was more like once a month, and then through the
- 13:40Speaker 3: winter months that went away too. You know, like you're
- 13:43Speaker 3: not doing any sky diving in New York in November, December, January.
- 13:47Speaker 2: Foreveryone, which makes sense.
- 13:49Speaker 1: But at first, until you said that to me the
- 13:50Speaker 1: other day, I didn't even put two and two together
- 13:52Speaker 1: that obviously you can't go up there when it's freezing.
- 13:55Speaker 3: I mean you can, it's just very uncomfortable.
- 13:57Speaker 2: Yeah, it sucks, So you'd rather so.
- 13:59Speaker 1: Most people, people that you know that live in the
- 14:01Speaker 1: Northeast do they travel a lot to Sidi in the winter.
- 14:03Speaker 3: Yeah, most north. Yeah, people in New yorkle slow down
- 14:07Speaker 3: into wintertime. Yeah, maybe make a trip or two to
- 14:10Speaker 3: like Florida or you know, to Arizona or southern California
- 14:14Speaker 3: or something. Okay, so just do like a little vacation.
- 14:16Speaker 2: So you graduate college.
- 14:18Speaker 3: I graduate college, and I'm like, I'm taking a year off,
- 14:23Speaker 3: yeah from I'm not doing art. I'm not going to
- 14:26Speaker 3: get a graphic graphic design job right away, that's for sure.
- 14:30Speaker 3: I'm just gonna I'm gonna move out West. I'm gonna
- 14:32Speaker 3: go to Arizona. I'm gonna move to the world's largest
- 14:34Speaker 3: skydiving center, and I'm just gonna go be a skydipe
- 14:38Speaker 3: bump for like a year.
- 14:39Speaker 2: What did your parents say?
- 14:41Speaker 3: They were okay with it at the time. I mean
- 14:44Speaker 3: they were okay with me, not like pursuing a career
- 14:48Speaker 3: in you know, in the arts right away. Like they
- 14:51Speaker 3: understood like, okay, yeah, finished school, you want to travel
- 14:54Speaker 3: for a year, you know, do your thing, be a
- 14:56Speaker 3: hippie whatever. Cool. They were still trying to understand skydiving,
- 15:02Speaker 3: I think at the point at that time, like trying
- 15:04Speaker 3: to understand like their son is doing this, like really dangerous,
- 15:08Speaker 3: crazy thing. You know, at least that's what everybody thinks, right,
- 15:11Speaker 3: it's crazy, crazy and dangerous. But it took them a
- 15:17Speaker 3: few years to like accept it and get comfortable comfortable
- 15:22Speaker 3: with it. Yeah, you know, and those those first couple
- 15:25Speaker 3: of years, they were just like, oh, this is just
- 15:26Speaker 3: a fad or a thing, a phase. I'm going to
- 15:28Speaker 3: like whatever, I'll stop eventually.
- 15:32Speaker 1: How did that feel for you, though, that the people
- 15:34Speaker 1: that you cared about so much were a little hesitant
- 15:36Speaker 1: in supporting something that literally felt like absolutely everything to you.
- 15:41Speaker 3: I don't think I cared as much at that time.
- 15:43Speaker 3: I was still like, you know so much as a kid,
- 15:47Speaker 3: you know, you just don't think that way. As a kid,
- 15:48Speaker 3: you don't think about how other people are affected. Yeah,
- 15:53Speaker 3: you know, you just or you might think that, but
- 15:56Speaker 3: not as much as adults do totally, So you know,
- 16:00Speaker 3: it's just more a selfish mind state, like, nah, I
- 16:03Speaker 3: gotta you know, go do something awesome and fun and
- 16:07Speaker 3: do what I want to do because I got this
- 16:09Speaker 3: freedom now, this you know, this new freedom. And yeah,
- 16:13Speaker 3: I don't think I really I just I just was like,
- 16:15Speaker 3: I have to do this right, and you're not getting
- 16:19Speaker 3: in my way. To making me not.
- 16:22Speaker 2: Do this exactly. So you go to Arizona.
- 16:24Speaker 3: So I go to Arizona with nothing in my pocket.
- 16:28Speaker 3: I I don't even know in the car at the time.
- 16:31Speaker 3: I actually don't have a car, but I I moved
- 16:33Speaker 3: to Arizona with a friend who had a car at
- 16:35Speaker 3: the time, so I did have transportation out there right right.
- 16:40Speaker 3: And I think I went out there. I think I
- 16:42Speaker 3: took I had like four thousand dollars like to my name. Yeah,
- 16:46Speaker 3: I saved up through like high school jobs and whatnot.
- 16:51Speaker 3: And I got out to Arizona. And the first thing
- 16:53Speaker 3: I did was I bought a trailer. I was like, well,
- 16:56Speaker 3: I need a home. So I bought this like this
- 16:59Speaker 3: rinky old RinkyDink old like trailer. Bought it for a
- 17:03Speaker 3: couple thousand bucks, you know, and had to put ten
- 17:08Speaker 3: layers of like whatever ceilant on the roof because it
- 17:13Speaker 3: leaked so much when it rained, this trailer, it was hard.
- 17:16Speaker 3: It was just like, thank god it was Arizona too, right,
- 17:18Speaker 3: that doesn't rain that much. But parked it right at
- 17:20Speaker 3: the Scoutiving Center at this on this airport in Eloy, Arizona.
- 17:23Speaker 2: And how did you find this particular skydiving sit.
- 17:25Speaker 3: It's the world's largest scodiving center. So it's kind of
- 17:28Speaker 3: like once you get into the sport and you read
- 17:30Speaker 3: your first Scoutbbing magazine, you'll you know, you quickly figured out, like,
- 17:35Speaker 3: what's this place right, scot of Arizona, right, Why are
- 17:38Speaker 3: all the pictures from there? Right? And you know, just
- 17:40Speaker 3: because of the fleet of aircraft that the place has
- 17:43Speaker 3: and the weather made it the largest scotoping center, right, Okay,
- 17:48Speaker 3: good airplanes and great weather.
- 17:50Speaker 2: And how was it once you got there?
- 17:52Speaker 3: Which was amazing? It was awesome. I had my trailer
- 17:54Speaker 3: on the airport. I felt like I had just signed
- 17:56Speaker 3: up for adult summer camp and it was like three
- 18:00Speaker 3: and sixty five days a year.
- 18:01Speaker 2: Yeah, totally.
- 18:02Speaker 3: I wasn't a counselor yet, but I was like a junior.
- 18:05Speaker 2: Counselor, and so you're working there.
- 18:08Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, I started working there. I got a job
- 18:11Speaker 3: at the skydiving center packing parachutes, and which is kind
- 18:14Speaker 3: of like the for a lot of people in the sport.
- 18:17Speaker 3: It's there like entry level type of job because in
- 18:22Speaker 3: any of the any like becoming an instructor or a
- 18:26Speaker 3: video guy or any of that sort of stuff, you
- 18:28Speaker 3: need to have the experience skydiving first, right, So as
- 18:32Speaker 3: you're building that experience, you know, packing parachutes like you're
- 18:35Speaker 3: making some money, you're learning about support around it. You're
- 18:39Speaker 3: you know, you might be on the job zone all
- 18:41Speaker 3: day packing parachutes all day, and there's like a couple
- 18:44Speaker 3: opportunities throughout that day to get on on an airplane
- 18:46Speaker 3: and make a couple of jumps. So you know, you're
- 18:49Speaker 3: just around it making a few bucks. And it doesn't
- 18:53Speaker 3: like the other thing. It doesn't. It's not really hard
- 18:56Speaker 3: to pack a parachute, right, Like I can teach you
- 18:58Speaker 3: in about an hour to get You're gonna be a
- 19:01Speaker 3: slow packer for a while and it'll just take you
- 19:04Speaker 3: a long time to actually pack a parachute. But within
- 19:08Speaker 3: a month you're gonna be like fast, You're gonna just
- 19:11Speaker 3: be like slamming these things down. You know, a couple
- 19:13Speaker 3: hundred pack jobs in and you're just like you can
- 19:16Speaker 3: pack pair sets in like five minutes.
- 19:18Speaker 1: So you're packing parachutes, you're taking opportunities when you can
- 19:21Speaker 1: to get up there and jump. How many jumps do
- 19:23Speaker 1: you have to do and what kind of training goes
- 19:25Speaker 1: into actually becoming a skydive instructor.
- 19:29Speaker 3: Well, there's different like there's different types of instructors and
- 19:33Speaker 3: different requirements for them, and all the requirements, they're all
- 19:36Speaker 3: like basic minimum requirements that you need. Yeah, like five
- 19:41Speaker 3: hundred jumps, is I believe what you need to become
- 19:45Speaker 3: like Tannemon instructor so to take other people on skydives. Yeah,
- 19:50Speaker 3: you have to have a minimum five hundred scotives and
- 19:52Speaker 3: then you would have to go through the tandem like
- 19:55Speaker 3: course that teaches you how to become a Tannem instructor.
- 19:58Speaker 3: And that's you know, that takes about a week. It's
- 20:02Speaker 3: more or less about twenty five jumps that you're doing
- 20:06Speaker 3: with instruct experienced guy. You know, they're just like just trying.
- 20:10Speaker 3: Like the guy that you're strapping to you, the guy
- 20:14Speaker 3: that's getting strapped to you is basically a very experienced
- 20:16Speaker 3: scout ever who's trying to like throw you through the
- 20:19Speaker 3: ringer and give you like every worst possible scenario situation
- 20:23Speaker 3: and see how you handle it and teach you how
- 20:26Speaker 3: to handle.
- 20:26Speaker 2: It, so eventually you do that out.
- 20:28Speaker 3: There, I actually skip that stage that card. I actually
- 20:33Speaker 3: I packed for a couple of years and I went
- 20:34Speaker 3: straight to just coaching. Yeah, because through those years of packing,
- 20:39Speaker 3: like I said, I was taking every opportunity to scottdive,
- 20:41Speaker 3: and usually when I would go jump, I would go
- 20:43Speaker 3: jump with my friends who happen to be all really
- 20:45Speaker 3: good scottivers because I lived at the biggest Scout diving
- 20:49Speaker 3: center in the world where all the world champions are,
- 20:51Speaker 3: so I got to all my friends were really good.
- 20:54Speaker 3: You know, I'm there with a couple hundred jumps and
- 20:57Speaker 3: I'm jumping with guys you know, they have more world
- 21:00Speaker 3: records on their world championships under their belts and thousands
- 21:04Speaker 3: and thousands of skydives. So I have like the best
- 21:07Speaker 3: mentors and coaches around me throughout these years as I'm packing.
- 21:13Speaker 3: So my skill level is you know, kind of just
- 21:16Speaker 3: going pretty good trajectory, good trajectory.
- 21:22Speaker 1: Yeah, when you say someone has a world championship in
- 21:24Speaker 1: skydie like, what are you doing to earn a world
- 21:28Speaker 1: championship in skydiving?
- 21:29Speaker 3: Okay? So there's yeah, that's a whole big thing. There's
- 21:34Speaker 3: different disciplines that basically you can look at skydiving almost
- 21:36Speaker 3: it's two sports. There's like the body flying sport and
- 21:40Speaker 3: then there's the parachute flying sports, right, So it's two
- 21:44Speaker 3: sports and one both are very very different. You know,
- 21:47Speaker 3: what goes into learning to fly your body and what
- 21:49Speaker 3: goes into learning how to fly a parachute, the technical
- 21:52Speaker 3: sides of it. It's like, I mean, it's two different
- 21:56Speaker 3: apples and oranges within each one of those, like say
- 22:00Speaker 3: the body flying side of the sport. You have different
- 22:04Speaker 3: styles of flying. Yeah, so you have what traditionally what
- 22:10Speaker 3: most people are familiar with with movies and stuff, it's
- 22:13Speaker 3: called relative work. Are belly flying this is what we
- 22:16Speaker 3: also call it, and you're just basically in that basic
- 22:19Speaker 3: skativer position that we all know falling belly to earth,
- 22:23Speaker 3: arms wide, legs wide.
- 22:26Speaker 2: And.
- 22:28Speaker 3: Our w is relative work. So you get a group
- 22:30Speaker 3: of people as a team. There's different there's four way
- 22:34Speaker 3: basically fore man team version of it, an eight man
- 22:37Speaker 3: team version of it. There's different different breakdowns of it.
- 22:40Speaker 3: But you see how many formations you can build in
- 22:43Speaker 3: like a thirty five second time so from exit like ready, set, go,
- 22:48Speaker 3: you leave the plane thirty five second clock to see
- 22:53Speaker 3: how many of these points that you can do, and
- 22:55Speaker 3: all these points that come from these there's like a
- 22:57Speaker 3: pool of moves that get rent that's anomally drawn before
- 23:01Speaker 3: each round, and it's like okay, it's this's these four
- 23:04Speaker 3: moves and you just do them over and over and
- 23:06Speaker 3: over and over again.
- 23:07Speaker 1: See how like in figure skating when you watch figure
- 23:09Speaker 1: skating and they have to execute all these different things
- 23:11Speaker 1: and then how they ex depending on how they do it,
- 23:15Speaker 1: they get a certain amount of points.
- 23:17Speaker 2: Yeah, so okay, I'm following. I understand.
- 23:19Speaker 3: Actually it's done more. This is more like a speed thing.
- 23:21Speaker 3: So how many actual points do you get? It's it's
- 23:25Speaker 3: if you if you are a faster team, you score
- 23:28Speaker 3: more points.
- 23:29Speaker 2: Got it?
- 23:30Speaker 3: You win?
- 23:31Speaker 2: You win.
- 23:32Speaker 3: But that's just like that's like a really basic version.
- 23:34Speaker 3: There's other versions of that that are you know, more
- 23:37Speaker 3: what we call free flying, which is more like a
- 23:39Speaker 3: three dimensional type of flying. So you're flying your body.
- 23:42Speaker 3: You might be upside down, right side up, on your
- 23:45Speaker 3: belly or on your back. Yeah, and you are able
- 23:49Speaker 3: you're flying with another person, you know, maybe it's one
- 23:52Speaker 3: other person or maybe it's three other people. This also
- 23:55Speaker 3: has many different breakdown Like you have a solo disciplines,
- 23:59Speaker 3: you have two way, you have four way, you have
- 24:01Speaker 3: a way. Same thing. God is like team individual, different
- 24:05Speaker 3: type different type things, different type things.
- 24:07Speaker 1: Okay, so you're you're learning from some of the best
- 24:10Speaker 1: of the best of the skydive school.
- 24:12Speaker 3: Yeah, the best of the best.
- 24:14Speaker 1: And when how long? Like at this point, how long
- 24:19Speaker 1: have you been at the skydive school? Because at first
- 24:21Speaker 1: you're like, I'm going to take a year off, and
- 24:23Speaker 1: then now where are we at?
- 24:25Speaker 3: Because I say, like forward into like two years, like
- 24:28Speaker 3: one year, taking one year off turns into taking two
- 24:31Speaker 3: years off. Yeah, now, my you know, I have some
- 24:33Speaker 3: skills in the sky. I'm getting a little tired of
- 24:36Speaker 3: packing parachutes and being on the ground most of the day.
- 24:39Speaker 3: There's also a lot of work on your hands. Yeah,
- 24:42Speaker 3: it actually hurts. It's painful. It can be very painful
- 24:45Speaker 3: packing all day, like your fingers bleeding. I'm starting to
- 24:49Speaker 3: meet people at the drop zone who are like, how
- 24:51Speaker 3: do you do this? How do you I'm like, oh,
- 24:53Speaker 3: you want me to coach you? You know, huh, I
- 24:55Speaker 3: can show you this. I can show you that. I
- 24:57Speaker 3: start basically picking up like these like students that want
- 25:01Speaker 3: to get coached. So they're experienced scottivers that might have
- 25:05Speaker 3: a couple hundred jumps under their belt ready or maybe
- 25:07Speaker 3: even like a thousand jumps under their belt, right, but
- 25:09Speaker 3: they just want to hone in and dial in their
- 25:11Speaker 3: their body flying skills or maybe maybe get become a
- 25:14Speaker 3: better pilot with the parachute, you know, so we call
- 25:17Speaker 3: it cannoy piloting. I think a year goes by and
- 25:19Speaker 3: I'm pretty much like booked every day.
- 25:22Speaker 2: Yeah, everyon I want to learn.
- 25:24Speaker 3: People who want to learn, they're just like, hire me
- 25:25Speaker 3: out to teach them how to fly better, how to
- 25:29Speaker 3: do it better.
- 25:30Speaker 1: And is anyone giving you any feedback about the fact
- 25:32Speaker 1: that you're doing this while you aren't, but like there's
- 25:35Speaker 1: other guys that are certified to do this and you're
- 25:37Speaker 1: just kind of doing that.
- 25:38Speaker 3: So not really because the certification really only you only
- 25:44Speaker 3: need that when you're working with beginner students, right, like,
- 25:47Speaker 3: if you're doing taking someone on a tandem scout, I've
- 25:49Speaker 3: got it, or if you're taking someone out on their
- 25:51Speaker 3: first solo scout, I've to teach them right so they
- 25:55Speaker 3: can go do so solo scouts.
- 25:57Speaker 1: And you like, obviously you're starting to make a career
- 25:59Speaker 1: out of it, which must have been kind of crazy.
- 26:02Speaker 3: Because no, there was no there's no like form, Matt,
- 26:06Speaker 3: there's no like, hey to step one two ABC, Like
- 26:10Speaker 3: just no one wrote this. There was no book written
- 26:13Speaker 3: on like how to be a professional scout ever the time, right,
- 26:17Speaker 3: and and I was kind of taking a very different
- 26:19Speaker 3: route at that time. The discipline that I was involved in,
- 26:23Speaker 3: which was free flying, was still fairly new, and free
- 26:27Speaker 3: flying is a three dimensional type body flying that we
- 26:29Speaker 3: do and the sky so we're like upside down, right
- 26:31Speaker 3: side up, spinning, flipping like all this stuff that's that
- 26:35Speaker 3: discipline was like kind of emerging at this time. So
- 26:37Speaker 3: people were like, man, we want we want to learn this.
- 26:41Speaker 3: There wasn't a lot of coaches out there that could
- 26:43Speaker 3: teach it. There was a lot of people that could
- 26:46Speaker 3: do it or you know, could do it and willing
- 26:49Speaker 3: to teach it. So not that I knew how to
- 26:51Speaker 3: teach it because I didn't. I think in the beginning
- 26:55Speaker 3: really didn't know how to teach it. I was figuring
- 26:57Speaker 3: out how to teach it as I was teaching it.
- 27:00Speaker 3: But I think everybody was, yeah, because it was a
- 27:02Speaker 3: new discipline, we're all kind of just trying to figure
- 27:05Speaker 3: this out. And even though you can do it, it
- 27:07Speaker 3: was like how do you do that? You'd like sit
- 27:08Speaker 3: down and think like, how am I doing that? What
- 27:12Speaker 3: part of my body? What am I using to push
- 27:14Speaker 3: on the wind when I do that? Like's in my
- 27:15Speaker 3: upper bodies and my lower body, and I using my
- 27:17Speaker 3: hips and I use my right So you really had
- 27:19Speaker 3: to like figure it out. So I kind of, you know,
- 27:23Speaker 3: messed up way. I mean, I wouldn't do that now
- 27:25Speaker 3: because now the level of knowledge, the general level of
- 27:30Speaker 3: knowledge of the sport is just so much greater and
- 27:32Speaker 3: high elevated. Yeah, it's elevated everybody. There's also there's a
- 27:36Speaker 3: lot more coaches. There's hundreds of coaches out there that
- 27:39Speaker 3: can teach us, right. They can teach it ten times
- 27:41Speaker 3: better than I can ever teach it now.
- 27:43Speaker 1: So when you're at the school and you're starting to
- 27:46Speaker 1: get all of these people to coach and you're talking
- 27:48Speaker 1: them through it, and you're discovering this new trendy way
- 27:51Speaker 1: of the sport, kind of is everyone kind of like
- 27:54Speaker 1: are you just going to stay out there?
- 27:55Speaker 2: What's going on? Are your parents like you're going to
- 27:57Speaker 2: come back to New York.
- 27:58Speaker 3: I remember getting a couple of phone calls and conversations
- 28:01Speaker 3: with my mom like that, like okay, so you know
- 28:05Speaker 3: what's going on? When are you gonna like come back
- 28:07Speaker 3: and get a you know job at a graphic design
- 28:10Speaker 3: studio an ad agency, you know, and you know, little
- 28:17Speaker 3: things were changing. I was always like going from a
- 28:20Speaker 3: packer to an instructor, to like competing to like gaining
- 28:24Speaker 3: some sponsors. So every time, like I got a question
- 28:28Speaker 3: like that, I kind of would throw back like I'm like,
- 28:31Speaker 3: you know, how I was accelerating and progressing through this
- 28:35Speaker 3: this this this realm. So that's how I find And
- 28:38Speaker 3: I would always make my mom or dad feel a
- 28:39Speaker 3: little uncomfortable like, oh oh oh that's awesome. Oh you're
- 28:43Speaker 3: doing something like stepping it up.
- 28:44Speaker 2: Well, So then when does red Bull come into the mix?
- 28:47Speaker 3: Red Book comes into the mix? Around two thousand and one,
- 28:51Speaker 3: which I'm in Lake Tahoe, California, I am scouting at
- 28:56Speaker 3: a scoutping center, Scout of Lake Dahoe, and there there's
- 29:01Speaker 3: a couple other guys we actually the guy who owned
- 29:04Speaker 3: the Scott Eving Center was Charles Bryant. He was a
- 29:07Speaker 3: red Bull sponsored Scott Ever. He was like pretty much
- 29:10Speaker 3: like the first like red Bull sponsored Scott Ever, I believe,
- 29:16Speaker 3: and he pulled on a few people onto you know,
- 29:21Speaker 3: into that world and Rebel was still pretty young at
- 29:24Speaker 3: that time, right in America at least, and he pulled
- 29:27Speaker 3: a few people on and it just it just grew.
- 29:30Speaker 3: So it was like right time, right place, with the
- 29:33Speaker 3: right people. Here's the other thing. So, why Red Bull
- 29:36Speaker 3: in Lake Tahoe? Actually, when Redbell first came to America,
- 29:41Speaker 3: there are two test markets. Was Lake Tahoe and I
- 29:43Speaker 3: think Vale, Colorado. So some of the first rebels, you know,
- 29:48Speaker 3: the first rebel skiing athlete, Shane McConkie, he was living
- 29:51Speaker 3: in Tahoe. You know, everything was based in these two places, right,
- 29:55Speaker 3: So to be around that, I think was it was
- 29:59Speaker 3: a big part of it and kind of grew with
- 30:01Speaker 3: Red Bull from those early early years.
- 30:10Speaker 1: Taking a break from today's episode to give my sponsor
- 30:13Speaker 1: Athletic Greens a little bit of love. I get a
- 30:16Speaker 1: lot of questions asking me all of the things about
- 30:19Speaker 1: Athletic Greens. Does it taste good? Do you actually drink
- 30:23Speaker 1: it every day? What's the deal, et cetera, et cetera. Yes,
- 30:26Speaker 1: I start every day with the Greens powder. Right when
- 30:29Speaker 1: I get back into my workout, I shake it up
- 30:31Speaker 1: with about ten ounces of water. And as someone who's
- 30:33Speaker 1: never really been a green juice person. Trust me, this
- 30:37Speaker 1: stuff tastes great and like I said, it's also got
- 30:41Speaker 1: all of the vitamins and minerals, superfoods, adaptagens, prebiotics, probiotics,
- 30:45Speaker 1: all the things I need to feel like a better me.
- 30:49Speaker 1: They're offering Hurdle listeners a special deal. It's twenty free
- 30:53Speaker 1: travel packs a ninety nine dollars value with your first purchase.
- 30:57Speaker 1: Just head on over to Athleticgreens dot com slash hurdle.
- 31:00Speaker 2: To claim it. No code necessary.
- 31:03Speaker 1: Again, that's Athleticgreens dot com slash Hurdle. Let's get back
- 31:08Speaker 1: to it. So what does that mean to be a
- 31:17Speaker 1: Red Bull sponsored athlete?
- 31:18Speaker 3: Basically means you wear the hat, You wear the hat,
- 31:24Speaker 3: and you're like very proud of wearing that hat. Yeah,
- 31:26Speaker 3: because that hat's awesome. Only Redbell athletes get the hat, right,
- 31:31Speaker 3: And yeah, you represent you know, you go do your sport,
- 31:34Speaker 3: you crush it and you try to represent.
- 31:37Speaker 2: The brand of the best as you can.
- 31:38Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 31:39Speaker 3: Yeah, And I think with Red Bull it's very natural
- 31:41Speaker 3: and easy for us because well, first of all, their
- 31:44Speaker 3: motto is Rebel gives you wings, right, So what better
- 31:48Speaker 3: sport really than like a sport where we're where magic backpacks,
- 31:52Speaker 3: where wings pop out in our backs, basically like Rebel
- 31:55Speaker 3: gives you wings. And you know the guy who started
- 31:57Speaker 3: Red Bull's he really loves aby. He's got a hanger
- 32:01Speaker 3: in Austria with all these cool vintage air planes and stuff.
- 32:04Speaker 3: So for other sports, it's normal to be a sponsored
- 32:06Speaker 3: athlete and just think about your sport and competing and training.
- 32:09Speaker 2: And that's it.
- 32:11Speaker 3: In skydivan, we didn't really quite have that yet, right,
- 32:13Speaker 3: you know it, it's still a pretty young sport. Not
- 32:16Speaker 3: a lot of people were able to do it. People
- 32:18Speaker 3: weren't thinking to just be that. You could be a
- 32:22Speaker 3: like athlete in this sport, right as you would be
- 32:25Speaker 3: an athlete in another sport. You had to be an instructor,
- 32:29Speaker 3: you had to be a video guy or a parachute
- 32:33Speaker 3: packer or some kind of rigor to be a professional skydiver. Yeah,
- 32:37Speaker 3: but you couldn't really be a professional competitor. Things started
- 32:41Speaker 3: changing a little bit around this time, and I started
- 32:45Speaker 3: gaining some sponsorships and I was able to actually gain
- 32:49Speaker 3: enough sponsorship to just kind of focus almost entirely on
- 32:54Speaker 3: competing and swooping, and that was it.
- 32:57Speaker 2: Swooping.
- 32:58Speaker 3: Swooping is what we call it. There's like ten different
- 33:01Speaker 3: words for everything we do in this just focusing on So, yeah,
- 33:05Speaker 3: they canopy piloting parachute piloting competition, we call it swooping
- 33:11Speaker 3: and yeah, and that's pretty That was That was. That
- 33:14Speaker 3: was like the first discipline that I kind of started
- 33:17Speaker 3: competing in and being recognized for it. And it was honestly,
- 33:20Speaker 3: at the time, it is the only discipline that was
- 33:25Speaker 3: entertaining for spectators. You're landing in front of people. The
- 33:29Speaker 3: rest of it is like, oh, you're drive falling out
- 33:31Speaker 3: of an airplane three miles away. You're a little dot.
- 33:35Speaker 3: You get close enough. So the only way to really
- 33:38Speaker 3: judge anything else is through video, you know, And people
- 33:43Speaker 3: can't relate I think the general public too. They don't
- 33:46Speaker 3: relate to Scott to free fall. They just see you
- 33:48Speaker 3: floating around and moving. They don't understand what it takes
- 33:51Speaker 3: to actually fly your body and to be balanced and
- 33:53Speaker 3: to actually control yourself on the wind the way you do.
- 33:56Speaker 3: Like you watch a video of someone flying in the
- 33:59Speaker 3: in the wind tunnel, it just looks easy. Yeah, you
- 34:03Speaker 3: try to go in it the first time and you're
- 34:05Speaker 3: like bouncing off the walls. You're like, oh my god,
- 34:07Speaker 3: this is going to take me thousands of hours to
- 34:09Speaker 3: get to that, to that guy's.
- 34:10Speaker 2: Level, right, right.
- 34:13Speaker 1: It must have been kind of difficult to be one
- 34:15Speaker 1: of the first in the sport because it's not like you,
- 34:17Speaker 1: like you said, you didn't have any particular pattern to follow.
- 34:20Speaker 1: And then also along those lines, it wasn't like anyone
- 34:24Speaker 1: else could look to you and be like, yeah, this
- 34:27Speaker 1: is what he's doing now, because there weren't other examples
- 34:30Speaker 1: to provide to show them like, this is my career path,
- 34:33Speaker 1: this is what I'm doing. Can't you see that I'm
- 34:35Speaker 1: doing it really well and winning all these things?
- 34:37Speaker 3: I don't know? Yeah, No, you have to explain it
- 34:40Speaker 3: all the time because it's not a well known sport,
- 34:42Speaker 3: so you're always explaining got very you know, used to
- 34:44Speaker 3: explaining to people, Yeah, what is it that I do?
- 34:47Speaker 1: Yeah, which can be exhausting, especially if like you didn't
- 34:51Speaker 1: always think that this is what you were going to.
- 34:52Speaker 3: Do, yeah, yeah, especially when like most people's reaction is
- 34:56Speaker 3: like you skytive, Why would you jump out of a
- 34:59Speaker 3: perfectly good airplane? Yeah, Like, oh, I haven't heard that
- 35:02Speaker 3: one before, right, Why wouldn't you not you trust that airplane.
- 35:08Speaker 1: I mean, your attitude is just different than like ninety percent.
- 35:12Speaker 3: Hey, you know you either get in line or you know,
- 35:15Speaker 3: I'm not the type of person to get in lines.
- 35:17Speaker 1: I feel like that it must teach you so many
- 35:19Speaker 1: life lessons being willing to kind of take that risk.
- 35:23Speaker 3: I think. So I think more in hindsight now I
- 35:25Speaker 3: can kind of like reflect and you know, come up
- 35:28Speaker 3: with all these analogies and metaphors and things like taking
- 35:33Speaker 3: that blind leap, and you know a lot of motivational
- 35:36Speaker 3: type speeches can come out of it. Yeah, but I
- 35:39Speaker 3: think at the time, you didn't you know, you just
- 35:40Speaker 3: you didn't. I didn't know, Yeah, I didn't know. It's
- 35:43Speaker 3: just kind of grinding through.
- 35:44Speaker 1: How do you feel like these days you're kind of
- 35:46Speaker 1: applying those like that mental side of things to your
- 35:51Speaker 1: more everyday life because obviously you no longer live in Arizona.
- 35:54Speaker 3: Yeah, well I'm kind of based there still. Yeah, still
- 35:56Speaker 3: have a place there. Everything that I do in this
- 35:58Speaker 3: sport is you know, maybe maybe it's just like controlling
- 36:03Speaker 3: your emotion, your fear, you know, just trying to like
- 36:05Speaker 3: settle down, you know, your heart rate starts going up.
- 36:08Speaker 3: You know, maybe I'm going to do a speech, you know,
- 36:11Speaker 3: and I try and I get nervous before I talk
- 36:13Speaker 3: in front of like a large audience. Not so much
- 36:17Speaker 3: in like this setting. I'm not nervous right now, but
- 36:20Speaker 3: like in a large audience, I still get nervous, like
- 36:22Speaker 3: standing on stage and talking to people. And you know,
- 36:25Speaker 3: I'll try to use those mental tricks I know that
- 36:30Speaker 3: I use in the plane to like slow my heart
- 36:34Speaker 3: rate down, gain control of like where my thoughts are.
- 36:38Speaker 2: So a lot of people find that kind of grounding
- 36:41Speaker 2: through meditation meditation.
- 36:43Speaker 3: As we've spoken about this before, it kind of comes naturally.
- 36:47Speaker 3: In skydiving, you're kind of forced to meditate, you know,
- 36:50Speaker 3: whether it's just like even just visualizing, you know, visualization
- 36:55Speaker 3: is definitely a form of meditation, you know, just trying
- 36:57Speaker 3: to visualize that perfect performance. That's one way, and another
- 37:03Speaker 3: way is is really just trying to like really like meditate,
- 37:06Speaker 3: like trying to clear your mind of everything, you know,
- 37:11Speaker 3: and just relax and zen and just zen out, find
- 37:14Speaker 3: that zen spot, that place in your head where you're
- 37:17Speaker 3: not thinking right, overthinking anything right totally. I've done some
- 37:21Speaker 3: meditation with you know, like proper meditation, not just like
- 37:24Speaker 3: me sitting in an airplane meditating, but I've been walked
- 37:27Speaker 3: through meditations and it's really like it's a very similar
- 37:31Speaker 3: experience experience where you go in your head. Especially, you know,
- 37:35Speaker 3: because skydiving it's always like being nervous or being afraid.
- 37:38Speaker 3: You're trying to really control being nervous or afraid.
- 37:42Speaker 2: When you became a Red Bull sponsored athlete, and then
- 37:45Speaker 2: you were doing more and more competition, you were doing
- 37:49Speaker 2: more and more competitions, you then also started to do
- 37:52Speaker 2: some other kind of contract work through this.
- 37:55Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, so through Yeah, right around the same time
- 37:58Speaker 3: I started working for them government.
- 38:00Speaker 2: So what do you do for them? That's insane?
- 38:03Speaker 3: Train military? Yeah, they don't do anything much not much
- 38:08Speaker 3: different than we do it. You know, they're all just
- 38:09Speaker 3: trying to do the same thing. Jump out of an airplane,
- 38:11Speaker 3: land safely, so you know, land safely.
- 38:17Speaker 2: I guess someone's got to teach them.
- 38:18Speaker 3: Someone, someone's got to teach them. And internally, you know,
- 38:21Speaker 3: they just don't have you know, they've they figured out like, hey,
- 38:25Speaker 3: let's get an expert at this, you know, because in
- 38:27Speaker 3: the military, they'll have a guy Scott, a instructor in
- 38:31Speaker 3: the military. That's not all he does. He's got like
- 38:35Speaker 3: twenty other things he trains, and you know, so of
- 38:37Speaker 3: course hire a civilian specialist. That's all they do all
- 38:42Speaker 3: the time. They're really good at it.
- 38:45Speaker 2: And where are you training them?
- 38:46Speaker 3: All over? Yeah? Yeah, I mean mostly mostly in Arizona,
- 38:50Speaker 3: but all which I travel a lot.
- 38:52Speaker 2: Yeah. So where have been some of the craziest places
- 38:55Speaker 2: that you've jumped from?
- 38:57Speaker 3: I mean New York was, honestly, yeah, I mean there's
- 39:01Speaker 3: a lot, a lot of places. I've jumped so many places,
- 39:03Speaker 3: even here in La. Like I was just actually on
- 39:06Speaker 3: a on the Santa Monica Mountains yesterday, was it yesterday
- 39:11Speaker 3: for a little hikeers yesterday or day before now. We
- 39:14Speaker 3: were looking out over the whole valley, you know, all
- 39:16Speaker 3: of LA and I'm like, oh my god, I've landed there.
- 39:18Speaker 3: I've landed there, I've landed there, Like picking out all
- 39:21Speaker 3: these spots like in the city on the beaches and
- 39:24Speaker 3: places I've landed my parachute. Yeah, and I've landed. I've
- 39:29Speaker 3: jumped in so many places. But New York. New York
- 39:31Speaker 3: is just super special, just you know, from growing up
- 39:33Speaker 3: there and after you know, after nine to eleven with
- 39:38Speaker 3: all the restrictions on flying and flight restrictions getting permission.
- 39:42Speaker 3: The fact that I was able to get permission to
- 39:44Speaker 3: jump over New York City was like five years ago.
- 39:48Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 39:49Speaker 3: Yeah, I still can't believe that.
- 39:51Speaker 2: Yeah, Like, where did you land when you did that?
- 39:53Speaker 3: On a barge in the Hudson River. So that was
- 39:56Speaker 3: the only way the city allowed it. I presented five
- 39:59Speaker 3: or six other project to the city before this, from
- 40:02Speaker 3: base jumping, buildings and base jumping the Statue of Liberty
- 40:06Speaker 3: to which I found Statue of Liberty actually is has
- 40:10Speaker 3: nothing to do with New York even it's like it's
- 40:12Speaker 3: national But anyway, trying to present all these projects to
- 40:16Speaker 3: New York to do a cool project there, and they
- 40:18Speaker 3: were like no, no, no, no no. But when I said,
- 40:21Speaker 3: we fly the wingsuit up the Hudson River, we open
- 40:24Speaker 3: a parachute, and then we land on a barge in
- 40:26Speaker 3: the river, and we're never over the city and we're
- 40:29Speaker 3: not landing in the city. That's a big thing. They
- 40:31Speaker 3: don't want us to land in the city, right, Oh
- 40:33Speaker 3: you're gonna land on a boat. Oh yeah, sure, perfect,
- 40:35Speaker 3: have fun.
- 40:36Speaker 1: You kind of talked before a little bit about like
- 40:38Speaker 1: all the different musculature that it takes to be really
- 40:41Speaker 1: good at your craft. What are the things that you're
- 40:43Speaker 1: doing outside of skydiving that really keep you balanced and
- 40:47Speaker 1: like ready to perform at your top level?
- 40:51Speaker 3: Just staying active I think, you know, just living an
- 40:55Speaker 3: active lifestyle can do it. Yeah, you don't need to
- 40:59Speaker 3: be the strong is the fastest, you know, the most flexible,
- 41:03Speaker 3: but all those things really help, you know, especially at
- 41:06Speaker 3: my level, on any on a lower level, if you're
- 41:08Speaker 3: just like learning a skydive, you don't have to be
- 41:10Speaker 3: in shape. To be honest, you don't have to be
- 41:12Speaker 3: You can come straight off the couch into an harness
- 41:17Speaker 3: and throw you out a plane and you're gonna be fine.
- 41:19Speaker 3: But taking the sport to like level that I'm at,
- 41:22Speaker 3: you know, you definitely want to look after yourself. So
- 41:25Speaker 3: I'm very conscious of, you know, my diet and my training,
- 41:28Speaker 3: my cross training and stuff I'll do. Like here at
- 41:32Speaker 3: Red Bull, I'm here been training at their High Human
- 41:35Speaker 3: Performance Jim. We've got trainers and nutritionists, massage there, like
- 41:41Speaker 3: a great team of professionals to help not only me
- 41:46Speaker 3: but all the other athletes at Red Bull in everything
- 41:49Speaker 3: from you know your you're training to even maybe you're
- 41:51Speaker 3: injured and doing some kind of physical therapy recovery type stuff.
- 41:56Speaker 1: So obviously the lifestyle that you're living can lead to
- 41:59Speaker 1: a little bit of instability and that you're not always
- 42:02Speaker 1: in the same place for a long time. You're kind
- 42:03Speaker 1: of bouncing around a lot, always either on a plane
- 42:06Speaker 1: going from point A to point B, or on a
- 42:08Speaker 1: plane to jump out of it. Yeah, so what kind
- 42:11Speaker 1: of keeps you grounded when you're constantly all over the place.
- 42:15Speaker 3: I don't know if I've ever grounded, to be honest,
- 42:18Speaker 3: I struggle with that one. Yeah, traveling. Traveling is crazy.
- 42:25Speaker 3: I mean it's kind of I was just having this
- 42:27Speaker 3: conversation with someone yesterday or the day before or whatever,
- 42:30Speaker 3: and it's like, you know, with social media, everyone always
- 42:34Speaker 3: looks at social media and I'm always doing something cool
- 42:37Speaker 3: or I'm like at this event or doing this or that,
- 42:40Speaker 3: and I am I'm either surrounded by hundreds of people
- 42:44Speaker 3: and I'm the center of the attention and you know,
- 42:46Speaker 3: the the talent or whatever, you know, the center of
- 42:50Speaker 3: the attention, or it's a complete opposite. I mean, you
- 42:53Speaker 3: travel to a lot and spent endless hours in airplanes
- 42:59Speaker 3: and hotels, and you know that side of it is
- 43:01Speaker 3: very like lonely in a way. It's like most of
- 43:04Speaker 3: it I do alone, you know, I feel like, so
- 43:07Speaker 3: there's this it's it's like zero or ten. Yeah, it's
- 43:10Speaker 3: like at the party or I'm like sitting in the
- 43:14Speaker 3: corner in my room from all the dunce hat on.
- 43:17Speaker 1: But what keeps you happy? Like what makes you happy?
- 43:22Speaker 1: Isn't it weird when someone asks you that and you
- 43:24Speaker 1: have to articulate it. It's actually been something that I've
- 43:26Speaker 1: been trying to work on a lot because I feel
- 43:28Speaker 1: you in the like zero to one hundred, and everyone
- 43:30Speaker 1: has an opinion on how you're executing your life, and
- 43:32Speaker 1: like everything looks really great and everyone thinks everything is
- 43:35Speaker 1: going really well.
- 43:36Speaker 2: But there are those lonely moments.
- 43:37Speaker 1: And so I've been working more to figure out what
- 43:40Speaker 1: are the things in my life that bring me joy.
- 43:43Speaker 1: For me, those things are my close relationships, so my
- 43:46Speaker 1: friends that know what's going on with me outside of
- 43:49Speaker 1: social media, which I think is important, and being able
- 43:52Speaker 1: to call out a friend who like maybe has been
- 43:55Speaker 1: a little distant, be like, this is what's going on
- 43:57Speaker 1: with me, and just because maybe like I've been following
- 44:00Speaker 1: you and you've been following me, Like, let's have a
- 44:01Speaker 1: real talk about what's up. So deep relationships make me happy.
- 44:06Speaker 1: I know you share this, Like yoga practice makes me
- 44:09Speaker 1: so happy. Writing things down makes me happy. And being
- 44:12Speaker 1: able to like articulate if I'm feeling a little bit alone,
- 44:17Speaker 1: all right, what do I have control over to change that?
- 44:20Speaker 2: Like who can I talk to? What can I do?
- 44:22Speaker 1: What can I do to bring that brings me joy
- 44:24Speaker 1: that I can like shift the conversation that's going on
- 44:26Speaker 1: in my head.
- 44:27Speaker 3: I probably share a lot of those details. Yeah, I
- 44:30Speaker 3: think in general, if I think, like what makes me happy?
- 44:33Speaker 3: Like when am I happiest? It's usually just when I'm
- 44:37Speaker 3: busy kind of have things going on, and when I'm
- 44:39Speaker 3: doing things that I'm occupied and I'm you know, there's
- 44:41Speaker 3: just something a goal and I'm in it, yeah, trying
- 44:46Speaker 3: to achieve it. Yeah, you know, the downtime makes me
- 44:50Speaker 3: less happy.
- 44:51Speaker 1: Yeah, speaking of goals, like what are the goals coming up?
- 44:55Speaker 3: I really want to travel to more new places. You know.
- 44:59Speaker 3: I tend to go to the same places over and
- 45:02Speaker 3: over and over and over again. You know. Yeah, dozens
- 45:04Speaker 3: of times I've been to Dubai, like over twenty times. Wow,
- 45:07Speaker 3: you know, I'm so tired of sitting on an airplane
- 45:10Speaker 3: for fifteen hours. Like I love Dubai. It's awesome, and
- 45:14Speaker 3: I have great friends there and it's hot, but I
- 45:16Speaker 3: definitely want to like travel to more new places, right
- 45:19Speaker 3: just sit in that airplane and go to the same
- 45:21Speaker 3: spot and traveling because everything's always new and exciting and first,
- 45:28Speaker 3: like it's very stimulating. Like I'm very happy when I'm traveling. Yeah,
- 45:33Speaker 3: you know, I like being around new things and just
- 45:35Speaker 3: absorbing all of that and making new friends, seeing old friends.
- 45:41Speaker 3: It's just exciting.
- 45:43Speaker 2: How do you feel when you're skydiving?
- 45:46Speaker 3: Uh? How do I feel when I'm skotted? Well, you know,
- 45:49Speaker 3: I feel every emotion when I'm skotming. Sometimes, you know,
- 45:52Speaker 3: some skydives I feel very relaxed. Others I feel very
- 45:56Speaker 3: oh my god, I can't wait till this jump is over,
- 46:00Speaker 3: and I'm just on the ground safe. So it it
- 46:02Speaker 3: really just depends on like what what it is I'm
- 46:05Speaker 3: doing in the sky. Is this regular scout? Is this
- 46:09Speaker 3: a routine jump at home with my like best friend,
- 46:13Speaker 3: or are we doing the next sickest stunt that you
- 46:17Speaker 3: know requires every ounce of focus and concentration. So I've
- 46:22Speaker 3: I've felt every emotion in the air.
- 46:26Speaker 2: Has anything ever gone wrong?
- 46:28Speaker 3: Little things go wrong all the time, Like what openings
- 46:33Speaker 3: parast openings are you know, they're can open a million
- 46:37Speaker 3: different ways it opens, but there's a lot of times
- 46:40Speaker 3: where you get like a little thing like you know,
- 46:42Speaker 3: the the steering line might be a little stuck or yeah,
- 46:46Speaker 3: it opens like in a twist, or it's spinning, you know,
- 46:49Speaker 3: and you got like line twists and you kind of
- 46:50Speaker 3: have to like kick out of them or stop the
- 46:53Speaker 3: parachute from spiraling out, you know, because it opens in
- 46:57Speaker 3: a spiral at the ground or something sort of like
- 46:59Speaker 3: little things that you constantly have to fix and correct.
- 47:01Speaker 3: But I think, you know, when that's a very common
- 47:05Speaker 3: question like oh my god, like what's the scariest thing
- 47:07Speaker 3: that ever happened? Or what's you know, I think a
- 47:10Speaker 3: lot of people are just so shaped by Hollywood. Yeah,
- 47:13Speaker 3: and you know, because not a lot you don't know.
- 47:16Speaker 3: Most people don't don't know the sport, and they don't
- 47:18Speaker 3: know the details and like details about it and what
- 47:21Speaker 3: it's just it's it's all a mystery to them. So
- 47:24Speaker 3: Hollywood has kind of painted I think the picture of
- 47:27Speaker 3: what Scott havings like and what the problems are like.
- 47:30Speaker 1: You know, like, yeah, I hear you in those moments
- 47:33Speaker 1: of chaos, Like is the visualization that helps you keep
- 47:36Speaker 1: your cool?
- 47:36Speaker 2: How do you keep your cool?
- 47:38Speaker 3: Experience? You know what? I think there is no keeping
- 47:42Speaker 3: your cool. There's no time to like get heated or
- 47:46Speaker 3: anything about it. Right, You're just you're there in the
- 47:48Speaker 3: moment when things are going bad. You're just reacting to that.
- 47:52Speaker 3: And it's I think it's all experience in training that
- 47:55Speaker 3: kicks in. It's all your subconscious A lot of these
- 47:58Speaker 3: things aren't like you're not going to sit there and
- 47:59Speaker 3: constant and be like is this better or that better?
- 48:01Speaker 3: Should I do this or that? You're just going to
- 48:03Speaker 3: react and do something. And it's usually during those moments
- 48:06Speaker 3: you're not scared and freaking out. It's after you land,
- 48:09Speaker 3: you know. It's like it's like being in an almost
- 48:12Speaker 3: a near car accident on the highway. You just react,
- 48:15Speaker 3: you know, you move that wheel, whatever you got to do,
- 48:18Speaker 3: slam on the brakes, turn the wheel, whatever it is,
- 48:22Speaker 3: and then after you pass all of it, then you're like,
- 48:25Speaker 3: oh my god, oh my god, oh my god. And
- 48:28Speaker 3: then you start freaking yourself out.
- 48:32Speaker 2: You know.
- 48:33Speaker 3: It's that's yeah, And I'll freak myself out before the
- 48:36Speaker 3: sky dive sometimes visualizing because I visualized, Yeah, visualize every
- 48:41Speaker 3: performance obviously the way you want to do it, perfect
- 48:45Speaker 3: and flawless. But I visualize everything going as ship and
- 48:49Speaker 3: I want to everything like how how is this going
- 48:53Speaker 3: to be? Like? How could this go wrong? And I
- 48:56Speaker 3: think that's you know, that's smart for what I do.
- 48:59Speaker 3: I think it's really smart. It's not what you want
- 49:01Speaker 3: to focus on right before the performance, but I think
- 49:03Speaker 3: it's something you want to be very aware of to this,
- 49:06Speaker 3: especially when it's like your life.

- 49:32Speaker 3: do not need to like get in any line and
- 49:35Speaker 3: follow some path because someone else had this idea for you.
- 49:40Speaker 3: You know, if I can make a career out of
- 49:43Speaker 3: jumping out of airplanes and playing with parachutes, and flying parachutes.
- 49:47Speaker 3: I mean, I think you can make a career out
- 49:49Speaker 3: of anything. You know. It's really like it really is
- 49:52Speaker 3: just that is like find something you love, do it
- 49:55Speaker 3: a lot, master it, and you know the other pieces
- 49:59Speaker 3: will fall into place. I mean, you got to work
- 50:01Speaker 3: hard for it. It's not just going to fall on
- 50:03Speaker 3: your lap. You have to make sacrifices. You have to
- 50:07Speaker 3: work hard and sweat and grind. It can be anything.
- 50:10Speaker 3: It doesn't have to be what you know your guidance
