- 0:00Speaker 1: Chapter twenty six of the Communion of Saints. One, all
- 0:07Speaker 1: saints that are united to Jesus Christ their Head, by
- 0:11Speaker 1: his spirit and by faith, have fellowship with Him in
- 0:16Speaker 1: his grace, sufferings, death, resurrection, and glory, and being united
- 0:23Speaker 1: to one another in love. They have communion in each
- 0:28Speaker 1: other's gifts and graces, and are obliged to the performance
- 0:33Speaker 1: of such duties public and private, as do conduce to
- 0:38Speaker 1: their mutual good, both in the inward and outward man. Two.
- 0:45Speaker 1: Saints by profession are bound to maintain an holy fellowship
- 0:50Speaker 1: and communion in the worship of God, and in performing
- 0:54Speaker 1: such other spiritual services as tend to their mutual edification,
- 1:01Speaker 1: as also in relieving each other in outward things, according
- 1:05Speaker 1: to their several abilities and necessities which communion, as God offers,
- 1:11Speaker 1: opportunity is to be extended unto all those who in
- 1:15Speaker 1: every place call upon the name of the Lord Jesus. Three.
- 1:21Speaker 1: This communion which the saints have with Christ does not
- 1:25Speaker 1: make them in any wise partakers of the substance of
- 1:30Speaker 1: His Godhead, or to be equal with Christ in any respect,
- 1:35Speaker 1: either of which to affirm is impious and blasphemous. Nor
- 1:40Speaker 1: does their communion one with another, as saints take away
- 1:45Speaker 1: or infringe the title or propriety which each man has
- 1:50Speaker 1: in his goods and possessions. Chapter twenty seven of the
- 1:56Speaker 1: Sacraments one ers are wholly signs and seals of the
- 2:03Speaker 1: Covenant of Grace, immediately instituted by God to represent Christ
- 2:08Speaker 1: and his benefits, and to confirm our interest in Him,
- 2:14Speaker 1: as also to put a visible difference between those that
- 2:18Speaker 1: belong unto the Church and the rest of the world,
- 2:22Speaker 1: and solemnly to engage them to the service of God
- 2:26Speaker 1: in Christ according to his word. Two. There is in
- 2:32Speaker 1: every sacrament a spiritual relation or sacramental union between the
- 2:38Speaker 1: sign and the thing signified, whence it comes to pass
- 2:43Speaker 1: that the names and effects of the one are attributed
- 2:47Speaker 1: to the other. Three. The grace which is exhibited in
- 2:53Speaker 1: or by the sacraments rightly used, is not conferred by
- 2:57Speaker 1: any power in them. Neither does the efficacy of a
- 3:01Speaker 1: sacrament depend upon the piety or intention of him that
- 3:06Speaker 1: does administer it, but upon the work of the Spirit
- 3:11Speaker 1: and the word of Institution, which contains, together with a
- 3:15Speaker 1: precept authorizing the use thereof a promise of benefit to
- 3:20Speaker 1: worthy receivers. Four. There are only two sacraments ordained by Christ,
- 3:27Speaker 1: our Lord in the Gospel, that is to say, baptism
- 3:31Speaker 1: and the Supper of the Lord, neither of which may
- 3:34Speaker 1: be dispensed by any but by a minister of the
- 3:37Speaker 1: Word lawfully ordained. Five. The sacraments of the Old Testament,
- 3:43Speaker 1: in regard to the spiritual things thereby signified and exhibited,
- 3:49Speaker 1: were for substance the same with those of the New
- 3:54Speaker 1: Chapter twenty eight of Baptism. One. Baptism is a sacrament
- 4:01Speaker 1: of the New Testament ordained by Jesus Christ, not only
- 4:05Speaker 1: for the solemn admission of the party baptized into the
- 4:08Speaker 1: visible Church, but also to be unto him a sign
- 4:12Speaker 1: and seal of the covenant of grace, of his engrafting
- 4:16Speaker 1: into Christ, of regeneration, of remission of sins, and of
- 4:21Speaker 1: his giving up unto God through Jesus Christ, to walk
- 4:25Speaker 1: in the newness of life, which sacrament is by Christ's
- 4:30Speaker 1: own appointment, to be continued in his Church until the
- 4:34Speaker 1: end of the world. Two. The outward element to be
- 4:39Speaker 1: used in this sacrament is water, wherewith the party is
- 4:44Speaker 1: to be baptized in the name of the Father and
- 4:47Speaker 1: of the Son and of the Holy Ghost. By a
- 4:49Speaker 1: minister of the gospel lawfully called thereunto. Three, Dipping of
- 4:55Speaker 1: the person into the water is not necessary, but baptism
- 4:59Speaker 1: is rightly administered by pouring or sprinkling water upon the person. Four.
- 5:05Speaker 1: Not only those that do actually profess faith in and
- 5:09Speaker 1: obedience unto Christ, but also the infants of one or
- 5:13Speaker 1: both believing parents, are to be baptized. Five. Although it
- 5:19Speaker 1: is a great sin to contemn or neglect this ordinance,
- 5:24Speaker 1: yet grace and salvation are not so inseparably annexed unto it,
- 5:30Speaker 1: as that no person can be regenerated or saved without it,
- 5:35Speaker 1: or that all that are baptized are undoubtedly regenerated. Six.
- 5:41Speaker 1: The efficacy of baptism is not tied to that moment
- 5:46Speaker 1: of time wherein it is administered. Yet, notwithstanding, by the
- 5:51Speaker 1: right use of this ordinance, the grace promised is not
- 5:55Speaker 1: only offered, but really exhibited and conferred by the Holy
- 5:59Speaker 1: Ghost to such whether of age or infants, as that
- 6:04Speaker 1: grace belongs unto according to the counsel of God's own
- 6:07Speaker 1: will in his appointed time. Seven, the sacrament of baptism
- 6:13Speaker 1: is but once to be administered unto any person. Chapter
- 6:19Speaker 1: twenty nine of the Lord's Supper. One our Lord Jesus
- 6:26Speaker 1: in the night wherein he was betrayed, instituted the sacrament
- 6:30Speaker 1: of his body and blood, called the Lord's Supper, to
- 6:34Speaker 1: be observed in his church unto the end of the world,
- 6:37Speaker 1: for the perpetual remembrance of the sacrifice of himself in
- 6:40Speaker 1: his death, the sealing all benefits thereof unto true believers,
- 6:45Speaker 1: their spiritual nourishment and growth in Him, their further engagement
- 6:50Speaker 1: in and two all duties which they owe unto Him,
- 6:54Speaker 1: and to be a bond and pledge of their communion
- 6:58Speaker 1: with Him and with each other as members of His
- 7:01Speaker 1: mystical body. Two. In this sacrament, Christ is not offered
- 7:08Speaker 1: up to his father, nor any real sacrifice made at
- 7:12Speaker 1: all for remission of sins of the quick or dead,
- 7:15Speaker 1: but only a commemoration of that one offering up of
- 7:18Speaker 1: himself by himself upon the cross once for all, and
- 7:24Speaker 1: a spiritual oblation of all possible praise unto God for
- 7:28Speaker 1: the same. So that the popish sacrifice of the Mass,
- 7:33Speaker 1: as they call it, is most abominably injurious to Christ's
- 7:37Speaker 1: one only sacrifice, the alone propitiation for all the sins
- 7:42Speaker 1: of his elect Three, the Lord Jesus has in this
- 7:47Speaker 1: ordinance appointed his ministers to declare his word of institution
- 7:52Speaker 1: to the people to pray and bless the elements of
- 7:55Speaker 1: bread and wine, and thereby to set them apart from
- 7:59Speaker 1: a common to a holy use, and to take and
- 8:03Speaker 1: break the bread, to take the cup, and they, communicating
- 8:07Speaker 1: also themselves, to give both to the communicants, but to
- 8:11Speaker 1: none who are not then present in the congregation. Four
- 8:16Speaker 1: private masses, or receiving this sacrament by a priest or
- 8:21Speaker 1: any other alone. As likewise, the denial of the cup
- 8:25Speaker 1: to the people worshiping the elements, the lifting them up
- 8:29Speaker 1: or carrying them about for adoration, and the reserving them
- 8:33Speaker 1: for any pretended religious use, are all contrary to the
- 8:37Speaker 1: nature of this sacrament and to the institution of Christ. Five.
- 8:45Speaker 1: The outward elements in this sacrament, duly set apart to
- 8:49Speaker 1: the uses ordained by Christ, have such relation to Him
- 8:53Speaker 1: crucified as that truly yet sacramentally only. They are sometimes
- 8:58Speaker 1: called by the name the things they represent to it,
- 9:02Speaker 1: the body and Blood of Christ. Albeit in substance and
- 9:06Speaker 1: nature they still remain truly and only bread and wine,
- 9:10Speaker 1: as they were before. Six, That doctrine which maintains a
- 9:16Speaker 1: change of the substance of bread and wine into the
- 9:19Speaker 1: substance of Christ's body and blood, commonly called transubstantiation by
- 9:26Speaker 1: consecration of a priest or by any other way, is
- 9:30Speaker 1: repugnant not to Scripture alone, but even to common sense
- 9:34Speaker 1: and reason, overthrows the nature of the sacrament, and has
- 9:39Speaker 1: been and is the cause of manifold superstitions, yes of
- 9:45Speaker 1: gross idolatries. Seven Worthy receivers outwardly partaking of the visible
- 9:52Speaker 1: elements in this sacrament, do then also inwardly, by faith,
- 9:57Speaker 1: really and indeed, yet not carnally and corporally, but spiritually,
- 10:03Speaker 1: receive and feed upon Christ crucified and all benefits of
- 10:08Speaker 1: his death, the body and blood of Christ being then
- 10:12Speaker 1: not corporally or carnally in with or under the bread
- 10:16Speaker 1: and wine, yet as really but spiritually present to the
- 10:20Speaker 1: faith of believers in that ordinance, as the elements themselves
- 10:24Speaker 1: are to their outward senses. Eight. Although ignorant and wicked
- 10:31Speaker 1: men receive the outward elements in this sacrament, yet they
- 10:35Speaker 1: receive not the thing signified thereby, but by their unworthy
- 10:40Speaker 1: coming thereunto are guilty of the body and blood of
- 10:43Speaker 1: the Lord to their own damnation. Wherefore, all ignorant and
- 10:48Speaker 1: ungodly persons, as they are unfit to enjoy communion with Him,
- 10:53Speaker 1: so are they unworthy of the Lord's table, and cannot
- 10:56Speaker 1: without great sin against Christ, while they remain such partake
- 11:00Speaker 1: of these holy mysteries, or be admitted Thereunto Chapter thirty
- 11:06Speaker 1: of Church Censures, one, the Lord Jesus, as King and
- 11:13Speaker 1: head of his Church, has therein appointed a government in
- 11:17Speaker 1: the hand of church officers, distinct from the civil magistrate
- 11:22Speaker 1: sec Two. To these officers, the keys of the Kingdom
- 11:26Speaker 1: of Heaven are committed by virtue, whereof they have power, respectively,
- 11:31Speaker 1: to retain and remit sins, to shut that kingdom against
- 11:35Speaker 1: the impenitent, both by the word and censures, and to
- 11:41Speaker 1: open it unto penitent sinners by the ministry of the Gospel,
- 11:45Speaker 1: and by absolution from censures, as occasion shall require. Three
- 11:52Speaker 1: Church censures are necessary for the reclaiming and gaining of
- 11:56Speaker 1: offending brothers, for deterring of others from the like offenses,
- 12:01Speaker 1: for purging out of that leaven which might infect the
- 12:05Speaker 1: whole lump, for vindicating the honor of Christ and the
- 12:08Speaker 1: Holy profession of the Gospel, and for preventing the wrath
- 12:12Speaker 1: of God which might justly fall upon the church if
- 12:16Speaker 1: they should suffer His Covenant and the seals thereof to
- 12:19Speaker 1: be profaned by notorious and obstinate offenders. Four. For the
- 12:25Speaker 1: better attaining of these ends, the officers of the Church
- 12:29Speaker 1: are to proceed by admonition, suspension from the sacrament of
- 12:33Speaker 1: the Lord's Supper for a season, and by excommunication from
- 12:37Speaker 1: the Church, according to the nature of the crime and
- 12:40Speaker 1: demerit of the person. End of Chapter thirty
