Transcript
- 0:16Hi guys, it's Megan from Vigilante Vibes and I'm here
- 0:19with another mutant Marvel character, Breakdown, and today
- 0:23I want to talk about Allison Blair AKA Dazzler.
- 0:27Pretty much anyone in the Marvel Universe could turn out to be a
- 0:30mutant, which means there's a huge range of paths they can
- 0:32take. Some, like the X-Men, use their
- 0:34powers to protect the world and their fellow mutants.
- 0:37Others go down a darker path and using their abilities to cause
- 0:41chaos. Though those types are actually
- 0:44a small part of the mutant population.
- 0:45And also they are really, really cool.
- 0:49A lot of mutants just want to live their lives in peace,
- 0:51avoiding trouble. Then there are those who find
- 0:54creative ways to use their powers in everyday life.
- 0:57Take Dazzler for example. Allison Ally Blair can turn
- 1:01sound into light, anything from sparkly visuals to full on laser
- 1:05blasts if the noise is loud enough.
- 1:08But Ally's never been into using her powers for fighting.
- 1:11She's more about putting on a killer show.
- 1:14For years she's stayed away from the whole superhero scene, even
- 1:17turning down the X-Men so she could focus on her music and her
- 1:20own life. That's part of what makes her
- 1:22such a unique and entertaining character.
- 1:25She even has had her own 42 issue solo comic and she she
- 1:32just wants to be a pop star, which I think is so cool.
- 1:37A lot of comic book characters come about because a writer or
- 1:40artist has a cool idea. But Dazzler's origin was way
- 1:43more planned out. She was actually created as part
- 1:46of a big collaboration between Marvel and Casablanca Records,
- 1:50meant to be a full blown multimedia star with comic
- 1:54appearances and real music released under her name.
- 1:57Before she became the Dazzler we know and love, she went through
- 2:00a bunch of changes. Her stage name bounced between
- 2:04Disco Queen, Disco Dazzler before they settled on just
- 2:07Dazzler. Her real name changed from
- 2:10Evelyn Free to Allison Blair. Even her powers were totally
- 2:14different. At first she was supposed to
- 2:16make people tell the truth, but that eventually evolved into a
- 2:20cool sound, into light power she's known for, which I think
- 2:23fits so much better. One of the most talked about
- 2:28changes though, was how she looked.
- 2:29Originally, artist John Romita Junior based her on Grace Jones,
- 2:34inspired by her influence on the black disco scene, but Marvel
- 2:39ended up changing her into a white blonde woman to resemble
- 2:42the actress Bo Derek, hoping Bo would play her in a movie or
- 2:45some kind of project. Romita wasn't thrilled with the
- 2:48change, and in the end, nothing ever came of it.
- 2:51Anyways. Casablanca Records ran into
- 2:53financial trouble and the whole plan fell apart.
- 2:56That left Dazzler kind of directionless.
- 2:59At first, her comic was only meant to be a one shot, but when
- 3:02the bigger plans fell through, Marvel scrambled to turn her
- 3:05into a regular character. So her debut wasn't exactly on
- 3:09her own terms. Instead, she popped up in other
- 3:12stories, most notably Uncanny X-Men #130 where she started to
- 3:16make a name for herself with fans.
- 3:19Uncanny X-Men #130 dropped right in the middle of the iconic Dark
- 3:23Phoenix Saga, but that didn't stop Dazzler from shining.
- 3:26The issue kicks off with the X-Men on the hunt for the newly
- 3:30detected mutant, and the whole setup taps into the same themes
- 3:34of sexual freedom and temptation that we're running through.
- 3:38Jean Grey Storyline Jean ends up in the nightclub during the
- 3:42search, which is where she encounters Dazzler for the first
- 3:45time. Even though Dazzler wasn't the
- 3:47main focus and didn't join the X-Men by the end of it, she
- 3:50definitely left an impression. After that, Marvel started
- 3:54weaving her into the universe with some quick cameos, like in
- 3:57Fantastic Four, Number 217 and Amazing Spider man #2O3.
- 4:03It was a subtle way to make her feel like a part of the bigger
- 4:06picture without throwing her straight onto the team.
- 4:09She quickly built friendships, pretty casual friendships with
- 4:12other heroes, and even if she wasn't close to them or itching
- 4:16to jump into battles, she knew she could count on them if
- 4:18things got bad. In Uncanny X-Men #130 there's
- 4:23this moment where she's clearly intrigued and a bit overwhelmed
- 4:26by the wild energy of the club crowd, which becomes even more
- 4:30fitting when we learn the mutant everyone's after is a pop star.
- 4:35From there, the story heats up across issues 1:30 to 1:31 and
- 4:40the X-Men clashing with the Hellfire Club and Jeans slipping
- 4:43deeper in under Masterminds control.
- 4:46It was an intense arc, but Dazzler still managed to stand
- 4:50out amid all of the chaos. Dazzler's back story was
- 4:54actually pretty engaging and got a lot more attention once her
- 4:57solo comic Dazzler launched. Ali grew up in a tense
- 5:01household. Her parents were always fighting
- 5:03until her mom suddenly disappeared.
- 5:06Her dad was super strict and had his heart set on her becoming a
- 5:09lawyer. But Ali had other ideas,
- 5:12especially after her mutant powers kicked in during a school
- 5:15dance and she realized how much she loved music.
- 5:18She ended up breaking away from her dad's expectations after
- 5:22college, and they she became estranged when she chose to
- 5:25follow her dreams instead of the path he laid out.
- 5:29Once the first issue of Dazzler hit shelves, it set up things
- 5:32really, really well. It gave readers a solid sense of
- 5:35who Ali was, her personal struggles, her ambitions, all
- 5:39while throwing in some big name guests like Galactus and Spider
- 5:43Woman to draw more attention. Marvel even made the comic a
- 5:47direct market exclusive at first, so it wasn't sold on
- 5:50regular news stands to make it feel more of a special event.
- 5:55The series started strong with great sales and a fun mix of
- 5:58genres. It had a bit of everything,
- 6:00romance, family drama, everyday life stuff, wild crossovers.
- 6:05It really tried to appeal to as many people as possible.
- 6:08But over time, sales began to drop and the book kept shifting
- 6:11its tone and direction. Different writers and artists
- 6:14came and went, which made it tough for the series to really
- 6:17find its voice. Eventually, things took a weird
- 6:21turn when Dazzler decided to try her luck in Hollywood.
- 6:24That led to Marvel Graphic novel #12 Dazzler the Movie, a pretty
- 6:30infamous flop that marked a low point for the characters early
- 6:35days. The book was poorly placed and
- 6:37borderline misogynistic, though it had one decent plot element.
- 6:42The whole world learned Allison Blair was a mutant and her
- 6:45career actually suffered for it. This choice led to the Dazzler
- 6:49series to to a tailspin without real direction, the character
- 6:53supporting cast and core themes having been quickly forgotten.
- 6:57Ally's unique angle as a super powered music star struggling in
- 7:02the big city had been brushed aside in the favor of generic
- 7:06action movie heroics that diluted the series identity.
- 7:11It lost relevancy over time and was cancelled at issue #42 with
- 7:16many plot threads being rushed or thrown aside.
- 7:19Dazzler ended with a whimper. Even though Dazzler didn't end
- 7:25on a high note, Marvel wasn't ready to give up on Ali just
- 7:28yet. When her solo series wrapped,
- 7:30they brought her into the X-Men, moving her away from her
- 7:33original stance of wanting nothing to do with the superhero
- 7:36lifestyle. She ended up teaming up with
- 7:38Beast, who's Hank McCoy, and the two even had a short lived
- 7:42romance in the Beauty and Beast miniseries.
- 7:45Not long after that, she officially joined the X-Men
- 7:47during Claire's Claremont's run on Uncanny X-Men, sticking
- 7:51around for about 40 issues. Claremont was known for rescuing
- 7:55underused or overlooked characters and giving them
- 7:58depth, and he did a great job with Allie.
- 8:01He tied up a few loose ends from her solo book, like having her
- 8:04movie The Dazzler the movie actually get released, and even
- 8:08built a surprising but strong friendship between her and
- 8:11Rogue. This was especially cool
- 8:14considering Rogue had tried to kill her on a few occasions back
- 8:18when she was still a villain. Dazzler really brought something
- 8:21fresh to the team. She was funny, she had good
- 8:24chemistry with the others. She gave the X-Men a bit of a
- 8:28light hearted flair. She became one of the several
- 8:32characters whose solo books hadn't worked out, but who found
- 8:36a new life as part of an ensemble cast.
- 8:38She stood out during the Outback era and the whole Mojo World
- 8:42storyline, where she also started dating Longshot, another
- 8:46move that helped keep her from fading into obscurity.
- 8:51Marvel even gave her a new costume, moving her away from
- 8:53the disco jumpsuit and signaling that she was now fully on board
- 8:57with the superhero gig. But her time as the team player
- 9:01came to a halt when she lost her memories and was written out for
- 9:04a while after that. She popped in and out of various
- 9:08X-Men related titles like New Excalibur, some of Matt
- 9:11Fraction's run, but she never quite reached the same level of
- 9:16popularity or momentum that she had back in the 80s and early
- 9:1990s. Now, what is Dazzler up to in
- 9:22more recent times? Dazzler continued popping up in
- 9:25various X-Men stories throughout the late 90s and 2000s.
- 9:29In New Excalibur, she even got a surprising new power.
- 9:33She could basically come back to life after dying.
- 9:36Some fans thought it might be a secondary mutation, but it never
- 9:40really explained or followed up on, so it just kind of was
- 9:43there. During that time, she also
- 9:47reconnected with Longshot, but their relationship fell apart
- 9:49again thanks to his amnesia. Over the years, Ali's pop star
- 9:54persona kept resurfacing because it had added a fun twist to her
- 9:57character and gave her some unique challenges.
- 10:00She also found herself working with some unexpected teams like
- 10:03SHIELD and the Offbeat X Terminators.
- 10:06While it was super brief, she finally made her live action
- 10:10debut in a blink and you'll miss It cameo in 2019's Dark Phoenix,
- 10:15which nodded to her comic book first appearance.
- 10:19More recently, she was chosen to join the main X-Men team in the
- 10:22X-Men Hellfire Gala 2023 One shot, which was a big deal,
- 10:26especially since it was one of the most diverse lineups of the
- 10:29team that has ever had. But in classic X-Men fashion,
- 10:33the celebration didn't last long.
- 10:35Dazzler was killed almost immediately by Nimrod, kicking
- 10:38off the Fall of X event. Thankfully, she didn't stay dead
- 10:42for long and quickly brought back to help lead an attack
- 10:46against Myra Mctaggart and newer developments.
- 10:50Ali was on tour with her mutant band in her own solo series
- 10:54Dazzler, written by Jason Lowe. He also wrote The Concert of
- 10:58Champions one shot, which centered on her concert and
- 11:01explore how she was processing everything emotionally after the
- 11:04events of her main series written by the same writer.
- 11:08So yeah, she's, I think she's pretty underrated.
- 11:10The people who like her love her.
- 11:13The people who don't like her don't know her.
- 11:16To know the Dazzler is to love her.
- 11:18She is phenomenal. So like always, I have some
- 11:22comics for you to check out. Allison Blair even better.
- 11:25Eve of Destruction Xtreme X-Men volume to the Dazzler run from
