Latest / Sea Hawkers Podcast: for Seattle Seahawks fans / Seahawks Camp Check-In: Byron Murphy, Depth Chart Battles, and a Real Concern
Transcript
- 0:09Adam: Welcome to the Sea Hawkers Podcast.
- 0:12I'm Adam Emmert.
- 0:13I'm joined by my good buddy Clinton Bonner.
- 0:15And Clinton, you'd gotten with me here maybe, like, Friday or so and
- 0:18said, "Hey, this weekend let's, let's talk a little training camp."
- 0:21And you had some ideas of things to go through here.
- 0:25We're gonna talk a little bit about, wide receivers having big camps
- 0:29and, what that looks like.
- 0:31Mm-hmm, mm-hmm.
- 0:32A little Byron Murphy, a little bit of An- Anthony Bradford, and we'll do it
- 0:36without, disparaging him for a change.
- 0:38Yes.
- 0:38Clinton: I think
- 0:38Adam: so.
- 0:38also too with the wide receivers having big camps, should we be
- 0:43concerned about any of the DB play?
- 0:45We're gonna talk a little bit about Jalen Milroe and some of
- 0:47the reports we've heard about him.
- 0:49And not that we have anything new on the Robbie Oots front, but it's
- 0:53not something I've talked about.
- 0:54So those are all topics we're gonna get into.
- 0:57Clinton, you did an awesome job curating all this.
- 0:59Man, lots of news, lots of action happening in training camp.
- 1:03Clinton: Tons of action.
- 1:04We got action early here as we got Dogzilla Monster saying, "The
- 1:07biggest storyline so far, D-Hall's big truck," and of course the
- 1:11short shorts, which we all love.
- 1:12What's up, Dogzilla?
- 1:13Good seeing you there.
- 1:14But yes, it says four biggest camp stories.
- 1:17We talked about it.
- 1:17Scratch that.
- 1:18We're gonna go…
- 1:19What is that?
- 1:20I'm not sure what the percentages are.
- 1:21Five, six,
- 1:21Adam: seven.
- 1:21I don't know.
- 1:22Four, yeah.
- 1:22Till we're done talking about big stories.
- 1:24Clinton: Yeah.
- 1:24It'll be more.
- 1:24Big, big stories, big humans, big movements, and we had a lot happening.
- 1:29Plus we had the, the scrimmage, the, the Fan Fest, and that just added
- 1:32some, some ideas to the fire as well.
- 1:34But you ran that down then perfectly.
- 1:36Adam, I really wanna always remind people, of course, first and foremost,
- 1:40if you're out there, like and subscribe.
- 1:41That's great.
- 1:42We love you.
- 1:42Please do the thing.
- 1:43But Adam, this entire off-season, I'm pretty sure the Ram…
- 1:47Did the Rams win a Super Bowl?
- 1:48because the entire off-season I thought it was the Rams
- 1:51that maybe won the Super Bowl, 'cause it's just so Ram-centric.
- 1:54Am I wrong?
- 1:55Is that not what happened?
- 1:56Adam: Oh, hadn't you heard?
- 1:57They, they bought a Super Bowl already.
- 1:58It's done.
- 1:59Like, they won.
- 1:59Oh, oh, it's done.
- 1:59It's over.
- 2:00I don't even know why we're doing training camp at this point.
- 2:02Oh.
- 2:03Clinton: Oh, okay.
- 2:03Adam: Like, we should just forfeit the rest of the games going
- 2:05forward- Oh … is what I heard, even though that, we're world champs.
- 2:09Clinton: Yeah, okay.
- 2:09So- We're, we're the
- 2:10Adam: champions.
- 2:10Clinton: Right.
- 2:10Yeah.
- 2:10Okay.
- 2:11Thank you for reminding me, 'cause I, I've- Yeah … I saw this image back on,
- 2:14you know, Twitter and then the, the, the internet interwebs of the s- the
- 2:17ring we have that says we won the Super Bowl last, this- Right … last year, and
- 2:22we're the current Super Bowl champions.
- 2:23So just wanna remind folks that we are, of course, the champions, not the stupid
- 2:27Rams, and I just don't care what they do.
- 2:30We don't play them till Christmas.
- 2:31I care what they do, but we're gonna beat them anyway, and we'll
- 2:33get into some of those reasons, I think even why in this episode.
- 2:36We do have some news and notes to get through that will not be the
- 2:39six topics you teased at the top, so hang around for all six of those.
- 2:42But a couple things that I thought were at least interesting going from
- 2:45left to right on screen, Adam, first thing is Greg Bell's reporting that
- 2:50Nick Emmanwori is still about four weeks out.
- 2:53And if I'm doing some fast math, that really puts week one, week two kinda
- 2:58in jeopardy if he's four weeks out.
- 3:00How you feeling about the newest news there?
- 3:02Adam: just be here week eight Like, that's all I care.
- 3:05Like, just be here by week eight and we're good to go.
- 3:08- Week
- 3:09Clinton: eight?
- 3:09Look, we- That's, that's pretty far, no.
- 3:10Adam: I know it's pretty far.
- 3:11Yeah.
- 3:11That's how loaded this team is.
- 3:13That's how many games they can win going into week eight.
- 3:16We want him for the back half at the very least and rolling into the playoffs.
- 3:20Now, could he be here much sooner?
- 3:22Absolutely.
- 3:22Would that be perfect?
- 3:23Yes.
- 3:24Let's do that, please.
- 3:25But there is zero concern on my part.
- 3:28They will get Nick Emmanwori back when it's time for him to be back,
- 3:31when he's healthy, and he will be a demon on the field once again, so.
- 3:35Clinton: great.
- 3:36Okay.
- 3:36Adam: yeah.
- 3:37I- It's one of those things where, look, there's other players that they
- 3:41can use in that kind of nickel, do everything position, whether that's Spoon
- 3:46or we're talking a lot of De'Anthony Bell being used in that role here in camp.
- 3:50there's options for Mike McDonald, and since he's a, a bonafide genius,
- 3:56I'm pretty sure that we'll be fine.
- 3:57Clinton: All right.
- 3:58We'll talk more about that when we do talk about the DB room and
- 4:00the corners, et cetera, et cetera.
- 4:02And look, I want, I want Spoon back way…
- 4:04well, not Spoon.
- 4:05I want even Emmanwori back way, way sooner.
- 4:06Not saying you don't, I know you do, but I'm not willing
- 4:09to wait, wait till week eight.
- 4:10I'm just not gonna do it.
- 4:11On the right-hand side we got J- some Jadarian Dave, Jadarian Price updates.
- 4:16Basically, no, seems like no big deal.
- 4:18Some soreness.
- 4:20You know, Mike Mac actually kinda like laughed it off a bit.
- 4:23He kinda made a li- light joke about it in the presser after the, the
- 4:27fanfare day there, and I don't think it's something you'd be joking about,
- 4:30Adam, if it were any more serious.
- 4:32But from Mike's lips, he's basically saying this is a couple of day
- 4:36thing, nothing more than that.
- 4:38Little bit of relief from, from my standpoint.
- 4:40How about you?
- 4:41Adam: Oh, for sure.
- 4:42E- 'cause we're all looking at the running back position, and we're
- 4:45relying on Price with the loss of Kenneth Walker, no doubt about it.
- 4:48And look, when I heard the first, part of this, you know, leg soreness-
- 4:54Yeah … it was like, okay, they're not talking about, like, an injury.
- 4:57We're talking about a rookie who's ramping up his usage throughout his
- 5:02first NFL training camp, while he was the backup back in college and didn't
- 5:08even get the full starter reps back then.
- 5:11yeah, probably he's gonna get a little sore at some
- 5:14point, maybe need a day or two.
- 5:16it- that's part of the rookie adjustment to the NFL, and it really
- 5:20does kinda hit all the guys, and you just manage it smartly, and it sounds
- 5:23like that's exactly what they're doing.
- 5:24Mike not worried, me not worried.
- 5:26Clinton: Me not worried either.
- 5:27I like that.
- 5:28And we got Rubbles coming in saying, "Bro, I'm telling you, the Rams are overrated.
- 5:32They're gonna disappoint.
- 5:33Much hype," and all those things.
- 5:35Look, I, I hope so.
- 5:36I hope so.
- 5:36Mm.
- 5:37I think, I don't know that they're overrated.
- 5:39I don't…
- 5:40You know, they were, they were a good team.
- 5:41I'm not sure they are over or underrated, but I can tell you the hype is all about
- 5:46them, and I'm, at this point I'm- I'm rolling over to the it's beyond fine.
- 5:51I'm actually, I think the Seahawks team, and we'll talk about Byron Murphy
- 5:55a- a little bit later, I think he is one of those emblematic players that's
- 5:59probably embracing the fact that even after a Super Bowl, there's, you know,
- 6:04we as a franchise still not getting the limelight and a player like Murphy,
- 6:08still not getting the kudos that he deserves while, you know, people
- 6:11put, put some love onto Jalen Carter.
- 6:13And frankly, from my point of view, he's a better player than
- 6:16Carter, but we'll get to that.
- 6:17And we got Shane also, Shane Turner Acoustic coming in, he said, with a 2.99
- 6:22Australian super chat saying, "Any word on who would be outside,
- 6:26with, if Spoon is playing nickel?"
- 6:28They got a couple different options, you know, there.
- 6:31It, it could be Nehemiah Pritchett.
- 6:32you know, there's- there's a few younger players there as well.
- 6:36I- I'm going to butcher the name until I get it right, Adam, the- the DB
- 6:40with the hard to pronounce last name.
- 6:42It's- it's still not crisp in my brain, so-
- 6:45Adam: Nope
- 6:45… Clinton: yeah, him.
- 6:46I think we all know who that is.
- 6:48I- Oga-
- 6:48Adam: Oganaga-bee?
- 6:49Clinton: Yeah
- 6:49Adam: Or, yeah.
- 6:50Thank you, Chris.
- 6:50We'll- we'll get it, man.
- 6:51We'll put some respect- Yeah … on that man's name
- 6:53Clinton: at some point here.
- 6:54Exactly.
- 6:54Yeah.
- 6:54Exactly, yeah.
- 6:54We're- we're not trying to be like that, it's just, it's just I- I haven't
- 6:57worked it into my brain just yet.
- 6:59But I think those are the two options, Shane.
- 7:01maybe there's some others there.
- 7:03We did see a report just before we got on that, that Terion Arnold,
- 7:07the, the kind of the Detroit high round pick, is coming in for a visit.
- 7:11He really washed out with the Lions really rather quickly.
- 7:14He's coming to camp and, I don't know about you, Adam, but a Mike
- 7:17McDonald maybe rehab on a high, high talented DB that kinda just flamed
- 7:24out maybe in the wrong situation.
- 7:26I, at- at least I'm intrigued.
- 7:27Color me intrigued on something like that.
- 7:29Adam: Well, he ought to be because of the history that the Seahawks
- 7:32have shown under John Schneider's leadership and when Pete was here,
- 7:36and now with Mike McDonald here.
- 7:38They've gotten a lot out of corners.
- 7:40I mean, Josh Jobe, we're not talking about Josh Jobe, right?
- 7:42We're like, "Oh, we got one of the spots locked down."
- 7:44Clinton: Correct.
- 7:44Adam: Yeah.
- 7:44Josh Jobe was a dude that the Eagles let go.
- 7:47He was at the bottom of their depth chart, and now he is a full-time starter
- 7:52for the Seahawks and a damn good player.
- 7:54You, you think about Kendricks last year and what they did with him.
- 7:57They…
- 7:57Mike McDonald is able to develop these guys and put
- 8:00them in position to look good.
- 8:01Not to mention, how do you make a back end of a defense look better
- 8:06just almost instantaneously, Clinton?
- 8:07Clinton: well, you put pressure on the quarterback-
- 8:10Yeah … and you stop the run.
- 8:10Yeah, yeah.
- 8:11Adam: Yeah, you have badasses up front on the D-line that- Yep …
- 8:14give, generate a lot of pressure and make things really difficult.
- 8:17And then if you have somebody who's a legitimate top one schemer in this league
- 8:22when it comes to defense, putting all those guys in the right position, it sure
- 8:26does allow you to get the most out of guys that maybe struggled at some other point.
- 8:30And you're talking about Terryán Arnold a little bit.
- 8:33Yeah.
- 8:33And look, one of the things Mike's super famous for is his ability to take
- 8:37something super complicated, distill it down into something that players
- 8:41are able to understand, and I heard DeMarcus Lawrence talking about how
- 8:45there's basically, for one play call, 10 plays could be run out of that, right?
- 8:50Mm-hmm.
- 8:50But yet it's clear, it's simple, it's something they can do.
- 8:52And that's what makes these guys look like they have 12 dudes on the field.
- 8:56Look, you bring in somebody like Terry Ara- Arnold, maybe the,…
- 9:00Let's see, who would it have been?
- 9:01It would've been, not Terry Glenn.
- 9:02It was the, the c- current coach of the Jets, the former, cornerback,-
- 9:07Clinton: Aaron Glenn?
- 9:08Adam: Aaron Glenn, not Terry Glenn.
- 9:09Yeah.
- 9:09Aaron Glenn.
- 9:10maybe his defense wasn't explained well.
- 9:13Maybe it was too complicated for Terryán Arnold.
- 9:15This could be a spot where he comes in and we get the best
- 9:19version of him, whatever that is.
- 9:20Maybe that's backup level, maybe that's starter level.
- 9:22Maybe that's not even on the 53, maybe that's part of the ready squad.
- 9:26Hard telling, not knowing at this point, but- Worth a flyer.
- 9:30Clinton: Yeah, I think so too.
- 9:31We'll s- we'll see.
- 9:32You know, it, there's a little bit of character concerns,
- 9:34and that's why he's available.
- 9:36Beyond also some, the play wasn't…
- 9:38Look, we all know in the NFL, like, if there are, quote-unquote, "character
- 9:42concerns," but you're amazing at your job, you don't lose your job in the NFL.
- 9:45You might, you might, you know, have to go into, what's that thing they made
- 9:48Puka go do that's not actually rehab?
- 9:50What's that, whatever they call that thing, right?
- 9:52So that thing
- 9:52Adam: people- fake rehab.
- 9:53Clinton: Yeah, fake rehab.
- 9:54There you go.
- 9:54Yeah.
- 9:54So they throw you into fake rehab nowadays and say, "Oh, yeah, he's,
- 9:57he's, getting the help he needs."
- 9:59if you're really great at football, you find your way on the field.
- 10:01That's just the facts of life.
- 10:02but maybe the reclamation project.
- 10:05We'll see.
- 10:06We probably spent two minutes too long on Terry and Arnold, seeing
- 10:09as he's coming in for a visit.
- 10:10We will keep you posted.
- 10:11I did have this information too, because not only…
- 10:15I, I'll gonna change the slide in a second for those on YouTube, and for those
- 10:18listening on audio, we are gonna play a game this week versus the Dallas Cowboys.
- 10:22It's pregame, you know, pregame, preseason Game 1.
- 10:25But, but Adam, I start to look ahead, and I don't take joy in doing
- 10:30this, but I- Hmm … but it's part of just kind of reporting what's
- 10:32happening across different camps.
- 10:35what's on screen here is a key player for week three, week six, and week eight.
- 10:40It's kinda funny you flagged week eight for Nick Emmanwori 'cause we'll talk
- 10:42about that guy on the right-hand side, you know, on this slide last.
- 10:46But first and foremost, week three, Laremy Tunsil tore his triceps.
- 10:51He's out for, you know- The year
- 10:53maybe the whole year.
- 10:54Yeah.
- 10:55He's out for significant portions.
- 10:57They have problems keeping Jayden Daniels upright to begin with.
- 11:01They just lost their tackle they brought in.
- 11:04Bad news bears for this Commanders team, and that's week three, very, very early.
- 11:08Benefit for Seattle, and you feel for Tunsil and the Commanders fans.
- 11:11Adam: Oh, for sure, and you hit it right on the head with the Commanders
- 11:15having a hard time keeping Jayden Daniels from taking those big hits-
- 11:18Clinton: Yeah
- 11:18… Adam: and having those big injuries, and, you know, we saw the
- 11:21Seahawks, injure him, the last time that we played, right?
- 11:24With the- Mm-hmm … elbow, so-
- 11:26Clinton: Yeah.
- 11:26Adam: and I'm a big Jayden Daniels guy.
- 11:28You should be.
- 11:28I- he was my number one, quarterback in that draft class coming in.
- 11:32love his game, love what he can do.
- 11:35It'll probably help that they won't have, Kingsbury there and running
- 11:38his rinky-dink Mickey Mouse,- … offense, that would get him killed.
- 11:42But Tunsil's- Yeah … a huge loss, man, a huge loss.
- 11:45And, get well to him- Yeah … no doubt about it, and we'll see what
- 11:50happens for the poor Commanders there.
- 11:52Clinton: Yeah, really good player.
- 11:53He's b- been around a long time now, and, hope he heals as quick as he can.
- 11:57Benefit for our Seahawks come week three, and then there's a couple just to look at.
- 12:01Jalen Waddell is still limping.
- 12:03He's, he's got an injury, and so they're saying it could be multiple week.
- 12:07He might be back pretty darn soon, so I'm not gonna put too much emphasis on
- 12:12this one right now, but Waddell was a big off-season get for the Broncos, who really
- 12:16need a little bit more additional help.
- 12:18I see you waving there.
- 12:20the, the papers say, the Pravda says- Hmm
- 12:23a big, a big off-season get.
- 12:25But Waddell might be out.
- 12:26I think even potentially more significant, maybe a better player,
- 12:30Luther Burden of the Chicago Bears, he tweaks a groin just yesterday, and
- 12:35he was having, from all reports, a sensational, camp, where it's like
- 12:40this dude is, like on the cusp.
- 12:43And I think he showed a lot last year.
- 12:44Week eight's halfway through the year.
- 12:46it's a groin.
- 12:47They can be very, very tricky, but you got two weapons here that now we gotta keep
- 12:52on the radar because they might not be…
- 12:54Maybe they're in, but maybe not 100%, like, running the
- 12:58way these guys intend to run.
- 13:01Adam: Well, let's hope for Luther's sake the groin is
- 13:03less tricky than more tricky.
- 13:04that's for sure.
- 13:05And as you put it, early returns for Luther Burden, they looked promising,
- 13:10and so that is a blow for them.
- 13:12look,- Jaylen Waddle a big addition for the Broncos.
- 13:17I mean- They sure
- 13:18Clinton: paid, they sure paid like it was.
- 13:20They paid heavy for that.
- 13:21Adam: Him and Tee Higgins can go to their own little island of the most-
- 13:24overrated number twos in the entire freaking league.
- 13:27Like, I, I just, wake me when you've done something that actually matters,
- 13:32like for real, with Jaylen Waddle.
- 13:34- Look, y- Yeah … once Tyreek Hill was toast down there in Miami,
- 13:39what happened to that offense?
- 13:41Clinton: Well, yeah, it, it went, the whole thing went sideways, so for sure.
- 13:44Yeah.
- 13:44So, yeah, and Weld- Waddell had some nice years with, with
- 13:47Hill as a nice complementary too.
- 13:49but I also thought the Broncos overpaid when they went and got
- 13:53him this off season too, so I, I wasn't super high on that.
- 13:57And his thing is speed and, you know, just getting open, kinda u- quickness
- 14:02and, and some good amount of speed.
- 14:03And, and if he's, if he's dinged, if he's not 100% operational, I'm not
- 14:09sure he's, he's all that effective.
- 14:11So again, something to watch with, with these upcoming opponents.
- 14:15And also Broncos, one of the tougher opponents, and I think the Bears will be
- 14:19one of the better teams we face this year as well, certainly an ascending team.
- 14:23And of course you don't know how the season's gonna go, but
- 14:26I think, Adam, that takes us…
- 14:27Yeah.
- 14:27Oh, one more reminder that we're- Okay … Super Bowl champions.
- 14:30We're gonna take it back over here to the full screen.
- 14:32So we got our, those are the news and notes.
- 14:34We want you liking, we want you subscribing, all those things are
- 14:38to keep the comments pouring in.
- 14:39We appreciate it.
- 14:40But we teased six topics at the beginning.
- 14:43Adam, where would you like to begin?
- 14:45Adam: let's get through wide receivers first.
- 14:47Clinton: Get through.
- 14:48I, the, the language, please, Adam, the language.
- 14:51Yeah.
- 14:51Get through.
- 14:52Yeah.
- 14:52All right.
- 14:52Adam: So- I chose the words on,- … very specifically.
- 14:55I did.
- 14:55Clinton: I know you do.
- 14:56All right.
- 14:56So-
- 14:57Adam: Yeah
- 14:57… Clinton: so the way I, I'll frame it real quick from my perspective.
- 15:01Yeah.
- 15:01My perspective was last year in, camp, you heard a lot of the
- 15:07Seahawks are getting no separation.
- 15:08We brought in Horton, he was just a, yeah, just a rookie fifth rounder, and the
- 15:14Seahawks are having a hard time getting separation throughout camp last year.
- 15:18Okay?
- 15:19JSN then goes and wins Offensive Player of the Year.
- 15:21He got some separation during the season.
- 15:24but this year it's almost like flip the script, where it's, there is a
- 15:28lot of open wide receivers and certain players that we'll talk about just,
- 15:34maybe having a really strong camp.
- 15:36So how are you feeling about this wide receiver room, and is the buzz
- 15:40worthy, I think is maybe the question.
- 15:43Adam: Wide receiver room is loaded, and it's funny because the
- 15:46buzz isn't around the guys that make this bonafide loaded, right?
- 15:51Like-
- 15:51Clinton: Yeah
- 15:52… Adam: the buzz isn't around JSN, who's- Right,
- 15:54Clinton: right
- 15:55… Adam: the best receiver in football and the reigning Offensive Player of the Year.
- 15:58The buzz isn't around Rasheed Shaheed who just got paid and was
- 16:02a big addition on special teams and had some moments offensively, and
- 16:06seems to be really clicking with Sam Darnold here through training camp.
- 16:09We're getting a little buzz on Shaheed, like, to be fair.
- 16:12Right?
- 16:12Little.
- 16:12Tory Horton- Yeah … coming in and doing some good stuff coming back
- 16:15from injury a- and looking good.
- 16:18And, you know, even Cooper Kupp having a nice training camp to this point.
- 16:23But the buzz, Clinton, is about some of the guys closer to the
- 16:27back end of the roster- Mm-hmm
- 16:28or potentially towards the back end of the roster.
- 16:31And that's interesting because look, this isn't an easy defense to go up against,
- 16:37but you've got a damn good quarterback who is comfortable in a system with
- 16:42guys that he feels comfortable throwing to, and so you're gonna get a lot of
- 16:46completions and that sort of thing.
- 16:48Also too, just remember these guys towards the back of the roster that we're gonna
- 16:52talk about here, whether that's Foster or Henderson- Yeah … those would
- 16:55be the two that come to mind, they're going up against mainly the threes
- 16:59and the fours and maybe even guys that aren't gonna be with this team when
- 17:02training camp is all said and done.
- 17:04So is it a positive thing that you're hearing good things about these players?
- 17:07Yes.
- 17:09Do I believe it until I see him at least suited up in preseason?
- 17:13No.
- 17:14A- and that's- … kinda like with anything that comes out of training camp.
- 17:17We- I've been doing this for 13 years now, Clinton, and there's years I've been
- 17:22just bamboozled by the, you know, hype during the off-season and training camp.
- 17:27And, you know, I know enough these days to be like, "Cool news.
- 17:31We'll see."
- 17:32Clinton: Yeah.
- 17:33I think the, it's e- it's very easy to get excited, especially in
- 17:36training camp, about wide receivers.
- 17:38And I guess the, the juxtaposition of last year where it's like we can't
- 17:41get separation, to like, oh, this looks a l- heck of a lot smoother.
- 17:46bar, kinda sans the actual scrimmage from yesterday, which was more of
- 17:49a, a defensive day it sounded like, versus the offense really humming.
- 17:53But you ment- you mentioned Foster, you mentioned Henderson.
- 17:56Cody White still, still doing, still doing really well out there.
- 18:00Mm-hmm.
- 18:00these are dudes, like with Foster, I, I think he's name, I
- 18:02think you pronounce his name Mon- Montaria, Montar- Mon- Montario?
- 18:05That
- 18:05Adam: feels right.
- 18:06Clinton: Yeah, I think it's Montario, I believe, right?
- 18:08Foster Jr.
- 18:08and if I have that wrong, please correct.
- 18:11And every time you turn on Twitter or something, even, even, you
- 18:15know, they're not talking about him too, too much, publicly, but
- 18:18everybody else who's watching it's gonna be like, "This guy's, this
- 18:20guy's every day making huge plays."
- 18:24It is a little excite- e- e- easy to get excited about wide receivers
- 18:28when it's not full go, you know?
- 18:30Yeah.
- 18:30And the defen- the DBs can't do everything that they're actually gonna do out there.
- 18:35And if a quarterback lays out a hospital ball and a guy plucks it
- 18:39out of the air, but it's like, you know, in the game, a safety's gonna
- 18:42take that guy's head off, right?
- 18:44And it's actually not a ball that you, you wanna throw.
- 18:46Not saying that's what's happening, but that's the kinda stuff you get in training
- 18:50camp, just because you're not, you know, taking dudes' heads off at that point.
- 18:54it is exciting.
- 18:55It is, it's easy to get excited about that crew.
- 18:58I do wanna pivot back to the buzz, and you know I'm gonna
- 19:01go back there for Cooper Kupp.
- 19:02Mm.
- 19:03'Cause it's a little bit about, hey, he really looks youthful this y- Okay
- 19:07… more youthful this year than last year.
- 19:09Sure.
- 19:09Like, quicker.
- 19:11Like, things of…
- 19:12So, all the things we love about the Coach Kupp and all that jazz, cool, cool, cool.
- 19:16But I'm kind of excited to hear, hey, he just looks like he, he
- 19:20regained a year or two in terms of his quickness, which is part of- Mm
- 19:25his game.
- 19:25I know you're the biggest Cooper Kupp fan, but how's that news
- 19:28hit you compared to last year?
- 19:31Adam: Five pounds heavier, faster than ever, blah, blah, blah.
- 19:35That's how that news hits me.
- 19:37Is Cooper Kupp young or old?
- 19:39Clinton: well relatively- For football … he's older,
- 19:43but he's in great shape Okay.
- 19:44These dude, these dudes stay in remarkable
- 19:45Adam: shape nowadays Yeah, it doesn't come back, Clinton.
- 19:47It doesn't come back.
- 19:48The quick ti- twitch stuff does not come back.
- 19:50So really what the explanation is, is this, because Kupp's biggest asset by far,
- 19:56and it was on full display in Hard Knocks, and it was on full display last year with
- 20:00the way that he unlocked JSN and helped Tory Horton develop and how he's worked
- 20:04with Shaheed over the off season here.
- 20:07It's his brain.
- 20:09That is the number one thing that really sets him apart from almost anybody else
- 20:14who's playing the position these days.
- 20:16So one more year in this system, in that sort of famil- familiarity, he's gonna
- 20:22look faster because he processes that much more quickly and is able to get his body
- 20:30moving that direction a little faster.
- 20:32Is he faster?
- 20:33There's a 0% chance he's faster this year.
- 20:35Clinton: Okay.
- 20:35All right.
- 20:36Well,
- 20:36Adam: we're gonna- Like, you don't get older and get faster.
- 20:38Clinton: Well, A- You don't … Amy was there You don't.
- 20:40It's not- A- Amy's on screen.
- 20:41She was there.
- 20:42Sure.
- 20:42We, we love Amy.
- 20:43She says, "Ku- Kupp's"- I love Amy Kean … serious- I know you do.
- 20:45Kupp seriously looks way faster than last year.
- 20:48Now- Do not believe this … is it pos- is it possible that, yes, he
- 20:51was healthy last year, but maybe he wasn't 100% up to his health standards
- 20:57and we just didn't know about it?
- 20:59That's a possibility.
- 21:00Yeah.
- 21:00Right?
- 21:00I mean-
- 21:02Adam: Y- yeah, sure.
- 21:03A- again, I just, when you have receivers that, we can all agree that
- 21:08Kupp isn't Triple Crown Kupp, right?
- 21:11Like where,
- 21:12Clinton: where
- 21:12Adam: he was-
- 21:12Clinton: Right.
- 21:12Yeah, yeah, no, for sure.
- 21:13Yeah.
- 21:13We can't- I don't wanna be hyperbolic about it.
- 21:15I- Yeah,
- 21:15Adam: exactly
- 21:15… Clinton: I'm licking on the edges, looking around the edges a bit, and
- 21:18really for me, the question and debate is where do all these footballs go?
- 21:23Like that, that's- Mm-hmm … whether Kupp is a smidgen faster or not,
- 21:26he's just, he's more successful in an offense with year two.
- 21:29Mm-hmm.
- 21:29You know, if we're playing the more likely game, maybe that's more-
- 21:32Yeah … likely and totally cool.
- 21:33But where are these footballs going with Horton doing what he's doing, with, with
- 21:38the, the bench we have- Yeah … with Arroyo having a very nice camp, A.J.
- 21:42Barnes- Yeah … not, not even sniffing the field just yet, but we know he's,
- 21:45he's due back, and he'll be on time.
- 21:47And we have a, a, a, a, a, a head, not, not head coach, offense OC that
- 21:53likes to get the ball in the hands of, of running backs, clearly, right?
- 21:58So- Yeah … or le- at least coming from a system that did a lot of that.
- 22:02I'm just like, "Where, where are all these footballs gonna go?"
- 22:05Because I don't think there's enough to go around with the depth we have.
- 22:09So that's really- Yeah … where for me that I think is more interesting than
- 22:13the grading of Kupp's, y- m- maybe getting a little better on the edges.
- 22:18Adam: Yeah.
- 22:18Look, that's kind of why I'm, not losing my mind about, you know, Foster
- 22:23and Henderson and the cool stuff that they've been doing through training camp
- 22:27because whose minutes are they taking?
- 22:29Like I- it's hard to find them, hard to find those snaps that they would take and
- 22:34those balls that they would catch outside of, you know, your top three or four guys.
- 22:38I did wanna pull up here a, a comment from our good buddy Michael Knight.
- 22:43Mm-hmm.
- 22:43"Adam, it's ridiculous to say you don't get faster, man.
- 22:47If you had nagging injuries last season and they are, and they are gone now."
- 22:52Cooper Kupp's had nagging injuries for the last four years.
- 22:55Ag- You don't magically become physically better as a whole as you age in the NFL.
- 23:04It's not, this isn't quarterback, right?
- 23:07Like, where Tom Brady blew the lid off of, okay, you can get
- 23:11old and be super productive.
- 23:12This is receiver.
- 23:13So when I was asking you earlier, he's not triple, Triple Crown Cooper Kupp, right?
- 23:17No,
- 23:17Clinton: he's not.
- 23:17Adam: No.
- 23:17Like, okay.
- 23:18I mean- So, like, we've seen the peak, we've seen where it's been,
- 23:21and, you know, the production has steadily been in decline.
- 23:24A little bit of a bounce-back last year because he did manage to stay
- 23:27healthy, not being as much of a focal point of the offense as he
- 23:30was when he was with the Rams.
- 23:33Now, with that said, I remember peak DeAndre Hopkins, and then when D-Hop
- 23:38goes to Tennessee, was he still D-Hop?
- 23:40No.
- 23:41Like, I remember Julio Jones when he left and, like, you know, goes to Tennessee.
- 23:45He didn't magically get faster and find it again.
- 23:47Mike Evans isn't gonna magically find the fountain of youth next
- 23:51to the substation- No he won't.
- 23:54No he won't … and become faster and more durable and all that.
- 23:56Cooper Kupp is an exceptional human.
- 23:58Cooper Kupp is an exceptional wide receiver, and has had an exceptional
- 24:01career, and has been an absolute godsend in terms of the knowledge and
- 24:07mentality that he has brought to this team, and is really a big reason why
- 24:11we are current Super Bowl champions.
- 24:12He is on the other side of the hill.
- 24:15Like, it just is what it is.
- 24:17Like, even Jerry Rice couldn't outrun Father Time.
- 24:20I'm quite certain Cooper can't either.
- 24:23Clinton: Well, you got two legends there, wide receiver legend- legends for
- 24:26the Seahawks, Jerry Rice and Cooper Kupp.
- 24:28So, and you know, Rice, that year with Dilfer, he had a nice…
- 24:31He actually had a nice year.
- 24:32A, he had pr- good production, specifically for his age.
- 24:35He was really old at that point, and he had some nice production.
- 24:38And I think that's really what I'm after, is like, can he be even
- 24:41more impactful, even if, if it's on the edges, than last year?
- 24:46And Adam, I think your point of, hey, what he's really bringing is the fact that he's
- 24:51literally a coach on the field and in, and in the, the entire team sees him that way.
- 24:57cool.
- 24:58You know, very- Yeah … it worked, it worked last year, right?
- 25:00And, and that kind of thing is gonna keep marinating.
- 25:03I like the idea that maybe he's getting sharper, and therefore
- 25:06things might be picking up.
- 25:08But I also do believe that if he had the nagging injuries, maybe he did have some,
- 25:12and maybe he's just a little bit quicker.
- 25:14Maybe, maybe.
- 25:14Again, we're talking about edges here.
- 25:16Sure.
- 25:16It is, it is pre-season.
- 25:17Hey, I got you to say sure.
- 25:18I'll take it.
- 25:19All right, so but that's the wide receivers.
- 25:21It's deep, it is aplenty, and there are not enough footballs to go around, and a
- 25:26guy like Foster, who is just absolutely kicking butt so far, we'll see
- 25:31what happens when there's games on.
- 25:33I'm sure he'll get a lot of play.
- 25:35We'll see.
- 25:35Can the Seahawks sneak a guy like that to the practice squad if he's,
- 25:40if he has a, a monster pre-season?
- 25:42Now, usually in the, the NFL, most often, unless you're Drake Thomas and
- 25:46we, we snag him, most often you get all bent, or at least I do, I get all bent
- 25:51out of shape and, "Oh my God, is this guy gonna get to the practice squad?"
- 25:54And like nine times out of 10, or maybe, maybe even more, Adam, they do.
- 25:57They, they get to the practice squad somehow, and we just kinda keep them for
- 26:01another year of learning inside a system in an organization that clearly treats
- 26:06its players with a lot of priority.
- 26:08Adam: Oh, for sure.
- 26:09And look, this year it might be a little tougher to sneak guys to the practice
- 26:13squad, considering that we are the reigning Super Bowl champions, and, you
- 26:17know, other teams like to pick off some guys that have been around that program
- 26:21and can maybe bring a little bit of that special sauce to their organization.
- 26:25Clinton: Yeah.
- 26:26Awesome.
- 26:26All right.
- 26:27So that's wide receivers.
- 26:28We got five more topics.
- 26:29we could go to DBs and, and look at the flip side of that, or save that.
- 26:33Where do you wanna go next?
- 26:34You're, you're bored, dude.
- 26:35Adam: yeah.
- 26:36Let's, w- let's go to DBs because it kinda goes hand in glove with,
- 26:40- Yeah … the excellent, receiver play that we've seen so far.
- 26:43Clinton: Yeah.
- 26:44So we've seen great receiver play and I think, again, compared, just compared
- 26:48to last year and what Mike McDonald's known for, and we get our glimpses
- 26:52into hard knocks and we can listen to the same pundits that others listen
- 26:55to that have access, and the ESPNs of the world, et cetera, et cetera.
- 26:59The DB room, specifically the corners, look a little bit,
- 27:04certainly less deep than last year.
- 27:07So- Yeah … level of concern, is it a major concern for you at this point?
- 27:11And if, and is, is it a sign if we're bringing in Atarian Arnold for a
- 27:15visit, do you think there's a little bit, a little bit of smoke here?
- 27:19And no, I'm not trying to make a smoke joke with Spokane
- 27:21going on, but I- Not a joke.
- 27:23But is there, is there a little to be concerned about because of these reports?
- 27:28Adam: Spokane smoke jokes are too soon?
- 27:30Okay.
- 27:30Just, I'm glad to know.
- 27:31I, I'm glad
- 27:32Clinton: to know.
- 27:32I just don't want, you know, don't want anybody thinking I'm making a joke
- 27:34about Spokane, 'cause that ain't cool.
- 27:36Adam: Oh, gosh, no.
- 27:37No, we all, you know, look at those folks over there
- 27:40and, and wish for the best.
- 27:41You know- Yes … we've got some wildfires raging right outside,
- 27:44our place up here in the mountains.
- 27:45So, you know, it's a little bit everywhere.
- 27:47We'll all get through it, no doubt.
- 27:48But the smoke that is coming from the VMac regarding the DBs- On a scale of
- 27:54one to 10, I give this about a four.
- 27:57I mean- That's
- 27:58Clinton: not, that's not nothing, though.
- 27:59That's,
- 27:59Adam: that- It's not nothing
- 28:00… Clinton: right.
- 28:01Adam: But also, too, I mean, our top two corners are Spoon
- 28:04and Jobe, and they can play Spoon outside, and w- that'd be just fine.
- 28:09I, even though I said, you know, eh, as long as- Right … Emmanwori's back by
- 28:12week eight, like, we're fine, he's likely back before then, so that's gonna be fine.
- 28:17De'Anthony Bell's been having a nice camp, much to your
- 28:21delight, I'm sure, which is awesome.
- 28:23Clinton: Yeah.
- 28:23Adam: a- and also, too, you've heard good things about
- 28:26Fuller, being out there.
- 28:28Mm-hmm.
- 28:28You know, the late round draft pick or the, was he late
- 28:31Clinton: round draft pick or- I think it was seventh round, Andre Fuller
- 28:32Yeah P- pretty sure seventh round Yeah,
- 28:32Adam: undrafted, one of the two, but he's had himself a nice camp.
- 28:36And then, it's, it feels like Neal's supposed to be back
- 28:39real quick or, or is- I think
- 28:40Clinton: soon.
- 28:40Yeah.
- 28:41Adam: Yeah.
- 28:41So, you know, there's answers there, and then also-
- 28:44Clinton: Well, may- there's s- potential answers there.
- 28:46We don't know yet, right?
- 28:47So in fairness, we don't.
- 28:49There's spins, there's spins there with some talent.
- 28:53Adam: Absolutely, and it's, we're not trying to fill three
- 28:55out of the four DB spots.
- 28:56We're trying to fill third corner.
- 28:58Clinton: But we do play third corners a lot, and, and if Emmanwori-
- 29:02Yeah … is out for a bit and they have to do the things where it's, you
- 29:05know, Spoon playing- Yeah … playing nickel, et cetera, et cetera, you
- 29:08know, we play a lot of three, DBs.
- 29:10We're, we're nickel a ton, and we're a dime some.
- 29:13And, you know, so it's, maybe it's some early season pressure.
- 29:17And I was thinking just today about this a little bit, you know, maybe
- 29:20it's a, just a little bit of the cross you also bear when you have a season
- 29:24that goes as long as our season went.
- 29:26Yeah.
- 29:26You know, so you have a player like Emmanwori getting a surgery y- quite
- 29:30a bit later than, than they would have.
- 29:32Now, you just take that and say, "Well, yeah, that's how it goes in the NFL."
- 29:36but it really does feel like Nick Emmanwori is, is more than, I mean,
- 29:41he's only a r- rookie last year, but somehow such a keystone to allowing
- 29:46McDonald to do what he wants to go do.
- 29:48And so that depth becomes, at, at DB, becomes, it's, it's under the
- 29:54microscope right away with the, with the way the wide receivers are performing,
- 29:59and really the whole pass catching unit is performing so far in the pre-season.
- 30:03So I'm not sure that there's a…
- 30:06I don't look at it right now and say, hey, I don't have, like, a lot of
- 30:09comfort, I guess, Adam, right now, if it's like, hey, if, if it's Pritchett
- 30:13starting as the third CB that, that I'm like, "Okay, y- we're locked in.
- 30:17We're fine," and he, and he won't get picked on.
- 30:20at least a little bit, and I think he's progressing.
- 30:24I think year two to year one was much better, but still maybe not- knocking
- 30:29socks off, I guess, is the way to say it.
- 30:31Adam: Well, if Pritchett's been able to stay with the team and stay
- 30:34on the roster being a later round draft pick, wasn't he a sixth?
- 30:38Clinton: Well, it was the five and six, right?
- 30:39'Cause they
- 30:40Adam: cut the- Yeah, the two kids from the same school.
- 30:41Yeah.
- 30:41Clinton: Yeah, from Auburn, 'cause they cut the- Yeah … the other one, he
- 30:44went to the Patriots for a bit last year.
- 30:46And then Pritchett stuck- Right … and w- and even in the first year it was
- 30:49like, ooh, is he gonna make the roster?
- 30:51And then he did, but to his credit, which is your point, now he's- Yeah … two
- 30:54years into making the roster, and he made some big plays last year.
- 30:58So,-
- 31:00Adam: Mm-hmm
- 31:00… Clinton: yeah.
- 31:00So-
- 31:01Adam: And two years into being acclimated to Mike McDonald's system,
- 31:05and the rest of the players around him.
- 31:07And let us not forget, too, there's other ways that they could go to
- 31:10try to alleviate this extra corner situation that is, to be honest,
- 31:15the weakest spot or the biggest question mark on the entire roster- Mm
- 31:21for the Seahawks.
- 31:22No doubt about it.
- 31:23That's why we're talking about it.
- 31:24But maybe they run a bunch more three safety stuff with Okara and Bud Clark.
- 31:29Like, that, that's in range as well, and he's such a versatile piece and
- 31:33a, a dog that can play down by the line of scrimmage and is a ball hawk
- 31:38as well, and maybe play the back end.
- 31:39Like, yeah, exactly, to, yeah, to our…
- 31:43Let's see, I, I always forget, because it's not Andrea- It's, I always forget
- 31:48who, who's attached to that account.
- 31:50Clinton: Me too, and I always feel bad.
- 31:51Sorry, I'm not great with names.
- 31:52I, I often feel bad.
- 31:54Ah, I'm the worst.
- 31:55But yeah, just please put your name, your first name in there, not Andrea's husband.
- 31:58well the Bud- But- The Bud Clark piece- Good point … is interesting
- 32:01too because- Yeah … yeah, good point.
- 32:02But the Bud Clark piece, you know, Mike, McDonald- clearly called
- 32:07him out a little bit at the presser after, after the, the scrimmage,
- 32:11and it was just simply, it really sounds like Bud's not there yet.
- 32:15Like, he is, he, right th- right now, right now, so it's still August, but right
- 32:19now he is not sniffing NFL time right now.
- 32:22He's, he's competing for a backup spot, and it's not very clear if
- 32:26he'll be the backup safety right now.
- 32:28So, but there's a lot of time to go, including real football games, where,
- 32:32hey, some dudes, I think it's Gruden or others that talk about this, or you
- 32:36might remember, the coach, I'm sure multiple coaches do, but some dudes,
- 32:40when the lights turn on, it, it, the, the lights at the, physical lights
- 32:44turn on on the field, the lights turn on upstairs and things start to click.
- 32:48We might be talking in a couple days, watching the Cowboys game, be
- 32:51like, "Oh my gosh, Clark had a sack and an interception," or something,
- 32:55you know, something radical like that where he pops off the field.
- 32:59That would not, it would not shock me if that's the case, Adam.
- 33:02Adam: Yeah, for sure.
- 33:03I mean, there's a reason why he was drafted where he was drafted.
- 33:06He's a talented player, and, you know, we are as a society so wired for
- 33:13instant success or instant failure.
- 33:15Right.
- 33:15And, you know, if it's not that, then it's no good.
- 33:18And, yeah, maybe it takes a, a, a minute for Bud Clark.
- 33:23Maybe we don't even see the best of Bud Clark till year three.
- 33:26Still makes it a great draft pick, y- you know?
- 33:28Mm-hmm.
- 33:28And I'm just saying that there's bodies, there's talent, there's different ways
- 33:32that a mastermind like Mike McDonald can work around the idea of having one
- 33:38of your corners be a little weaker than it was last year, potentially, because
- 33:43let us not forget, it's not like they're replacing The perfect corner who never
- 33:48made massive mistakes in huge moments.
- 33:51Clinton: That's true.
- 33:51Right?
- 33:52That's…
- 33:52Look, Tariq Woolen, very good cover corner, man-to-man corner most
- 33:57times, but then he'd have the, he had egregious mistakes which, which,
- 34:02caused a lot of consternation, right?
- 34:03A- and he…
- 34:04You gotta remember too, the NFL, of all the teams, gave him a one-year,
- 34:08$15 million deal, where, where this guy, talent-wise, looked like he'd be,
- 34:13be rolling into a second contract for multiple years at a pr- at, I would
- 34:18say, maybe not double, but somewhere into the 20s for his talent level,
- 34:23which was met with, you know, just some, some gaffes on the field.
- 34:28And we do have, Josh Tehuman who's on screen here saying, "A.J.
- 34:31Finley was great."
- 34:32Oh.
- 34:32Josh was out there recently with, a slew of Seahawks pundits, and he, and
- 34:37Josh is gonna be on the show, we think Wednesday, to come on and tell us all
- 34:41about what he saw out at Fan Fest and his, his, his training camp visit, so we're
- 34:45excited to have him out there as well.
- 34:47Josh, interesting to hear A.J.
- 34:48Finley was great.
- 34:50I heard the interception he got was, like, a really bad ball that
- 34:53should never be thrown type thing.
- 34:55So I just wonder if it's, like, more than just a ball that
- 34:57shouldn't have been thrown.
- 34:58Cool you made a play, very cool, but was there more to the A.J.
- 35:02Finley being great than making a pick that the ball should not have been thrown?
- 35:06So, but Adam, I do wanna segue.
- 35:08You said something about a guy getting, you know, maybe even better in year three.
- 35:13I'd like to talk about a guy that might be ascending into year four.
- 35:17You probably know who I'm talking about, 'cause he's a big, literally,
- 35:20physically, a very big human
- 35:23Adam: The, yeah, I mean, you, this is, this is year
- 35:25three for Murphy though, right?
- 35:27Not year four
- 35:27Clinton: Oh, no, I was going, I was going across the line.
- 35:30Adam: You're going across the line?
- 35:31I was- Are you going for, for, for Big Anthony in a
- 35:34Clinton: contract year?
- 35:34I, I was talking about Bradford.
- 35:36We're talking about…
- 35:37Yeah, but we could…
- 35:37Right, that's how good and deep and young this team is.
- 35:39It is.
- 35:40We could…
- 35:40And we are gonna talk about Murph in a second, but I wanted to go across the
- 35:43line and go to the offensive side of the ball and say, Anthony Bradford, I will say
- 35:48it quickly as I can and toss it to you.
- 35:50Look, we all know the gaffes, talking, speaking of gaffes, we see them on
- 35:55Twitter also, and he misses his block.
- 35:56He's turned around.
- 35:57He stops during a play sometimes, and then he plays, as we start to run
- 36:02the ball really, really well down the line, plays pretty darn clean and just
- 36:06gets better and better and better into year three, helps us win a Super Bowl.
- 36:10Year three was better than year two.
- 36:12Year two was better than year one.
- 36:14And if you're listening to, again, the pundits that are, that are out there
- 36:17watching with their eyes, they're saying, "Hey, there are days out there
- 36:21and weeks where Bradford looks like the most capable lineman out there with
- 36:25a unit that's together for year two."
- 36:29Adam, am I, am I bullish on Anthony Bradford?
- 36:32'Cause I think I'm blushing th- about it, man.
- 36:35I think I might be bullish.
- 36:36What do you think?
- 36:38Adam: You know, it's interesting because I think this happens in all
- 36:40facets of life, where the pendulum swings one way so dramatic that…
- 36:46I knew it was Nick, God damn it.
- 36:49I, it took me- For,
- 36:50Clinton: for our audio listeners, we just found out that it's Nick- Yeah
- 36:52o- on, on YouTube.
- 36:53There's Nick.
- 36:54Adam: For, i- yeah Thank you.
- 36:55Thank you … for, and Andrew Springer's husband's account there.
- 36:57Yeah.
- 36:57Yeah.
- 36:57all right, so anyways, the pendulum does seem to swing,
- 37:02really hard when things kind of go to a more extreme end of things.
- 37:05And last year, I think that all of us can agree, and it's not trying to dump
- 37:10on a Super Bowl championship player in right guard Anthony Bradford, but he
- 37:14was overall the most inconsistent and the weakest link of the offensive line.
- 37:19Clinton: Correct.
- 37:19Adam: And so he got the largest amount of crap.
- 37:21And then when you're a massive human, the way that he is, that when you do
- 37:26have a whiff, it looks pretty bad.
- 37:28Clinton: Yeah.
- 37:28Adam: You know, and it's hard to hide, right?
- 37:30And so the hate had just, like, poured out towards Anthony Bradford, you
- 37:35know, even through the off-season and the draft and all of that.
- 37:39Now, I think, I feel as if- the pendulum is almost overcorrecting, you
- 37:47know, back to the other, other way.
- 37:48And like, to Brandan's point here in the chat, you know, most capable?
- 37:52Are we sure?
- 37:54Yeah.
- 37:54There we go, Brandan.
- 37:55Oh, Bradford can elevate to okay and still be the weakest.
- 37:58Like, exactly.
- 37:59I think we're overcorrecting a little bit here, and some of the media that,
- 38:03covered him throughout last season feels a little bit guilty for taking
- 38:09his name through the mud a little bit more than maybe he deserved.
- 38:13Now, that doesn't mean that he didn't have bad moments and he was the weakest link.
- 38:17He was.
- 38:18Like, he, he, he just was.
- 38:19And two things can be true at the same time, Clinton.
- 38:22Mm-hmm.
- 38:22Yeah.
- 38:22He's gotten better each and every single year, and not that it's
- 38:26always a continual, you know, upward trajectory to awesomeness- Right,
- 38:31Clinton: right
- 38:31Adam: but you should expect that Anthony Bradford, another year in
- 38:35this system, looks a bit better.
- 38:37He is clearly the strongest of the linemen from everybody who does
- 38:42seem to watch him up close in camp.
- 38:44I know Dave Wyman can't get enough talking about, you know- Mm … Anthony Bradford
- 38:48throwing people around like rag dolls.
- 38:50But I think he's always gonna struggle a bit in this system to a
- 38:54degree, when you're reliant on zone schemes, and being quick and moving
- 38:59laterally and things like that.
- 39:01That's gonna be tough for him.
- 39:02It- Yeah … it's just his body type.
- 39:04It's always is.
- 39:05Now, if they get a lot more into power and duo and things like that throughout the
- 39:09year, that's gonna play to his strengths.
- 39:10So, he definitely seems to have a stranglehold on the job.
- 39:15It sounds like Bo Stevens, well, according to Grey Zabel, better than
- 39:19him when he's come into camp this year.
- 39:22not seriously pushing for the job.
- 39:24And Christian, who?
- 39:26is a, an afterthought.
- 39:28So-
- 39:28Clinton: Okay.
- 39:28So the, the U- Yeah … UConn slander for Christian Haynes.
- 39:31Hey- Yeah … may- hey, look, there's reports out there that Christian
- 39:34Haynes is having a better camp, right?
- 39:36So again, we'll see.
- 39:37We'll see.
- 39:37Hey, that's, that's all good.
- 39:39If there's more competition there, more the better.
- 39:42I think for me, it's simply, I've kinda gotten won over by Bradford's,
- 39:48like you said, it's not a linear progression, 'cause usually
- 39:50progress is not linear that way.
- 39:52But slow and steady bettering, and I also just really appreciate that after
- 39:58now three years of this, you don't hear the dude yapping off on social
- 40:03media ever He, he's- No … he's never out there compla- I don't think he
- 40:06Adam: cares.
- 40:07Clinton: I don't think so either.
- 40:08He's not out there complaining.
- 40:09Yeah.
- 40:09He's not out there, like, arguing with people.
- 40:11He's, whether he's thick-skinned or just is like, it just blocks it
- 40:14out completely, after three years of it, I, I could at least as a human
- 40:18be like, "Okay, I appreciate that," that he's just focused on getting
- 40:22better, and seemingly I think he is.
- 40:24I like your points about, hey, you know, with Jalen Sundell and Grey Zabel and,
- 40:28and others like that, and Cross being different types of athletes.
- 40:32Abe, a very good athlete, but also just a stronger dude himself,
- 40:36the right side being a little different than the left side.
- 40:38- Yeah … for sure.
- 40:39I like the point though that, hey, with what we want to run, Bradford
- 40:44is likely never going to be the most fleet of foot looking out
- 40:47there, and that's, but that's okay.
- 40:48That is absolutely okay.
- 40:49Again, if you are a, a competent guard in the NFL and you're not drawing lots
- 40:54of penalties, and you're limiting your mistakes, plus you're on a su- successful
- 40:59team, and nobody's really talking about you- Yeah … that'd be very nice.
- 41:03So, so I like the progress for Bradford.
- 41:05It's good to hear that he's getting a little bit of love in camp this year.
- 41:09Maybe he just kinda turns into this, this Seahawks darling, 'cause like, look, I
- 41:13think he's a dude that at the end of it, let's say he has a okay to good year.
- 41:18Like, okay to good.
- 41:19Yeah.
- 41:19And you could go re-sign him, and it's not like, you don't gotta break
- 41:22the bank and you keep him in a system where it's like, oh, or you do the
- 41:25James Carpenter thing, or others where you let them go to organizations
- 41:29and they kept getting better.
- 41:30Adam: Yeah.
- 41:30That's-
- 41:30Clinton: It's like, did we, did we get him to a point and then say,
- 41:33"Okay, bye bye," and he's gonna sign an okay contract somewhere else?
- 41:38Or maybe he earns the right, I guess, looking forward, to get a second contract
- 41:43with Seattle, which if you rew- rewind the clock 18 months ago, this conversation
- 41:48I don't think would be happening.
- 41:49Adam: It would sound absurd if you're- … if you had rewound
- 41:52the clock to 18 months ago.
- 41:54And with that said, you know, Josh was talking in the comments here
- 41:59regarding, you know, him getting a second contract and, and all of that.
- 42:02Now, I'm kinda with him on this.
- 42:04Look, John said one of the things that he learned the most from after the
- 42:08first Super Bowl run with the LOB guys is that you just can't keep everyone.
- 42:11Clinton: Right.
- 42:12Adam: And Ken Walker's a great example of this.
- 42:14Like, really good player.
- 42:15Is he one of your exceptional heartbeat players of this team?
- 42:18No?
- 42:19Okay, then he has to go.
- 42:20Mm-hmm.
- 42:20Right?
- 42:21And you gotta figure out a way to replace him, if you can.
- 42:25'Cause the sad truth is, is that if Anthony Bradford plays to a mid-ish level,
- 42:32throughout this year, which is pretty close to where he was last year- Right
- 42:36like, he wasn't a complete dumpster fire by any stretch.
- 42:38Clinton: Nope.
- 42:39Adam: 45% of the teams out there want him.
- 42:42And you're gonna be outbid.
- 42:43You're not gonna be able to afford to keep him.
- 42:45And that's okay.
- 42:47That's okay.
- 42:48And I hope Anthony Bradford gets a fricking bag after this year.
- 42:52Keep getting them checks, brother.
- 42:53And, I can't wait to see what two-time Super Bowl champion Anthony
- 42:58Bradford gets on the open market.
- 43:00Clinton: Love it.
- 43:01Okay, great, great way to close out for him.
- 43:03We discussed, we, so now we got Murph, and we have, we got three more topics:
- 43:07Murph, Milroe, or the mystery injury for Ouzts and how that might impact things.
- 43:12Where do you wanna ta- where do you wanna go?
- 43:14Adam: let's get bummer things out of the way first.
- 43:15Let, let's- Okay
- 43:16get the Ouzts thing out of the way, I think we're all still learning to decode
- 43:22Mike a little bit, even though he's very forthright as a whole, but he doesn't
- 43:26give away the farm either when he talks.
- 43:28And the presser when he's talked about initially Ouzts's injury, and
- 43:32then asked, in the subsequent one any updates, he's just like, "No."
- 43:36that was discouraging to me.
- 43:39That sounded like, oh, no, are we talking about another neck thing?
- 43:43Mm-hmm.
- 43:43Are we talking about something that's gonna make it so that, you know,
- 43:47fullback of the future is not Robbie Ouzts?
- 43:49Like, that- I know … that's, that's my gut feel on it with no
- 43:53information, anything like that.
- 43:56But, it stinks because, you know, Fleury with his exposure to Shanahan
- 44:03for as many years as he has, it seems as if fullback was gonna be a big part
- 44:09of what he wants to do, the way, similar to the way that Shanahan uses Juszczyk.
- 44:15Clinton: For sure.
- 44:16I, I agree on the usage, and, like, Ouzts started the season last year, I thought
- 44:21actually a little, a little rough.
- 44:22Rough, y- and I…
- 44:23He was, like, my favorite guy coming in.
- 44:24I'm like, "I love this guy.
- 44:25I love the stache.
- 44:26I love everything."
- 44:26I did a hype video for the guy, like I'm excited.
- 44:28Yeah.
- 44:29I'm excited that we took this tight end convert, and I'll get, get into, into the
- 44:34athleticism comparison in, in a second.
- 44:36But I thought last year he kind of was kinda targeting a little bit
- 44:40awkwardly, on the move, not at, not as smooth as I thought he would be.
- 44:44Then he got injured, then he came back, and I thought that second time around,
- 44:47which, oh, by the way, you can get better, especially as a rookie, but the second
- 44:52time that he got his chances, I was like, "Oh, man, he's markedly better already,"
- 44:56and this is coming off an injury.
- 44:58And then he gets dinged again and, and you know, that, that was kind of a, a
- 45:01sad way for him to end the year, and he's still, still got some, seemingly,
- 45:05lingering things going on there.
- 45:07We'll see.
- 45:08Now, we bring in Brock Lampe, and Brock Lampe's a fullback
- 45:11that was at Northern Illinois.
- 45:13So he was playing for Coach Hammock when Coach Hammock was the head coach
- 45:16there, who's now the running back coach, who's gotten, who's getting
- 45:19all the love or hate depending on what side you're on for, the,
- 45:23the, the, Hard Knocks and his- Oh,
- 45:25Adam: is he getting crap for, for that?
- 45:26Clinton: Well, just like s- some, well, some are like, "Man, he's
- 45:28just out there not really coaching, just like f-bombs everywhere."
- 45:31And some others are like, "I love this guy.
- 45:33This is my guy.
- 45:34I love exactly how he's talking to the running back room."
- 45:36So it's a little Tale of Two Cities with your perception o- of Coach Hammock.
- 45:40But they bring in Lampe.
- 45:42So I, I went to, you know, I went out today and looked
- 45:45at some of the, metrics.
- 45:47I was like, "Okay, what are we getting with Brock Lampe?"
- 45:49In case folks don't know who this dude is yet, he was an, a UDFA
- 45:52that signed with the Patriots.
- 45:54Now he signs with the Seahawks, but again, he played under, Coach Hammock
- 45:58as head coach at Northern Illinois.
- 46:00But 6.1,
- 46:01250, real- fast for a 6.1,
- 46:04250 guy running a 4.62.
- 46:06But here's the thing, Adam, Ouzts is 6'3", 275, runs a bit slower, but all the
- 46:12explosives for Ouzts, like the things that I think matter in terms of bench, in
- 46:17terms of like broad, i- his, his just jumping ability, which is explosiveness,
- 46:22those things that you're really, that just show, show sheer athleticism at 6'3", 275.
- 46:26Mm-hmm.
- 46:29Brock Lampe is very much like an- another Brady Russell.
- 46:34And I'm not saying that's a bad thing, but I think there's a bit of like
- 46:38froth around Brock Lampe, and I'm like, okay, maybe, m- maybe, we'll see.
- 46:43I hope he's awesome.
- 46:44But, like to pretend that he's the athlete that Ouzts is size-wise
- 46:50and explosive-wise, the data just says something different.
- 46:53So wanted to kind of point that out there.
- 46:55I want Brock Lampe to light it up.
- 46:57We can light the Lampe against the Cowboys and see it, but I'm not sold just
- 47:01yet that this dude could replace Ouzts if Ouzts is indeed in- injured for a while.
- 47:06Adam: So you don't love Lampe?
- 47:09You don't?
- 47:09Okay.
- 47:10- Not yet.
- 47:11Yeah, with, with that said I think anybody who's making a proclamation one way or the
- 47:17other about what this human can do with this team, I mean, you can make it.
- 47:23Y- y- you're welcome to do it.
- 47:24It's a free country.
- 47:25First Amendment's around for a reason, but you don't know what you're
- 47:27talking about because you couldn't possibly, 'cause none of us do.
- 47:30And, so we'll see.
- 47:32he, he definitely falls into the hard telling, not knowing, category.
- 47:37And, honestly, he may have better instincts at the position, too, even if
- 47:44he doesn't have the size that Ouzts has.
- 47:47I mean, you talked about the transition Ouzts was making, and
- 47:50we, we all have to remember he was playing tight end in college.
- 47:53Yeah.
- 47:53He, like, he wasn't a fullback.
- 47:54So learning something new at the highest level, can you imagine going to the
- 47:58highest level of, marketing, Clinton?
- 48:02Like, the highest, the highest thing in the, in the entire land,
- 48:05and they're like, "You know how you always dealt with graphics?
- 48:08Well, now you're a copy editor."
- 48:10Clinton: Mm-hmm.
- 48:10" Adam: And you gotta, and you gotta do it at the highest level."
- 48:13Be hard to do, right?
- 48:13If you've never been a copy editor.
- 48:15Clinton: It would take a little- Like, same … it would
- 48:16take a little while, right.
- 48:17It would take a little while, so.
- 48:18Adam: Same, same thing.
- 48:19So I don't know.
- 48:20Wait, wait and see on the fullback position.
- 48:23I'm not sold on Brady Russell being the fullback just because
- 48:26of size and, you know, kind of history and things like that.
- 48:29Love the human.
- 48:30Clinton: Yeah.
- 48:30Adam: - Correct … not, not sure that, he's the
- 48:33perfect fit for fullback.
- 48:35But again, with all of the different weapons that you had mentioned earlier
- 48:39in the podcast when, you know, from the tight end room specifically, you
- 48:43know, Fleury's got a lot of toys to play with, and he may end up in 12, 13
- 48:47personnel a lot more than he does 22, so.
- 48:50Or, or even 21.
- 48:5220.
- 48:52So yeah, we'll see how it goes.
- 48:54Clinton: Yeah, we will see.
- 48:55Pre-season will show us some more.
- 48:57I mean, at the end of all of that, I mean, man, let's just hope that Ouzts is
- 49:00not that injured, and he can get back.
- 49:03And- Yeah … I, I think my overarching point on that one is that, I think
- 49:07Ouzts is a different type of athlete than anybody else they have in that position,
- 49:11on the ro- on the current roster.
- 49:14And if he is healthy, I think his ceiling as a fullback is really, really high.
- 49:19Really high.
- 49:19Sure.
- 49:20So, so let's get, let's get the, the best guy back there.
- 49:23And then I was thinking about Nick Kallerup.
- 49:25We keep hearing that Kallerup's having a good camp as, like, this 3, 4 tight
- 49:30end, and how many tight ends- H-back
- 49:31are we actually gonna keep?
- 49:32And he's 6'5", he's 266, but he, you know, but he can move as a t- he's
- 49:37a good, good blocker as a tight end.
- 49:38So the last idea about fullback is I just wonder if they've even discussed
- 49:43it in, in the hall saying- C- could Nick do what Ouzts did last year?
- 49:48I mean, again, these are, these are good athletes.
- 49:50So change is hard, but if they want the Ouzts style guy, they maybe have
- 49:56one in the wings with Kalarup that is similarly sized and a, and a
- 49:59good athlete in, on his own right.
- 50:01So just one last- You- … thought on that side.
- 50:03Adam: Well, all right.
- 50:03One, one last, last thought.
- 50:04Clinton: Yeah, sure.
- 50:05Adam: Conspiracy Adam's here.
- 50:07And I think that they're holding on to the Ouzts information until
- 50:12the next episode of Hard Knocks.
- 50:14Clinton: Oh, okay.
- 50:14You, you want the drama.
- 50:15Yeah.
- 50:16You want the drama.
- 50:17Adam: Yeah, I think,
- 50:17Clinton: I think that's where- Because nothing sells more than
- 50:18fullbacks, baby, with staches.
- 50:20That's, that's what a-
- 50:21Adam: And this fan base- Well- … who's primarily watching Hard Knocks-
- 50:24… and a guy like Robert Ouzts, Robbie Ouzts with that mustache and what he
- 50:28could possibly mean in this scheme, I, the beautiful thing is, I'm
- 50:33knocking on all the wood, like that's one of the biggest injur- injuries
- 50:37we're talking about to this point.
- 50:38And so it seems like, to me, that there could be an upside it, and no real
- 50:44downside to holding that information, like your Kyle Shanahan, and not
- 50:48releasing it until like 11 days later.
- 50:50but this time for Hard Knocks instead of, to Chris Simms.
- 50:53Clinton: Yes, I was driving my Tesla, which was driving itself, and
- 50:56I reached my phone, but it's maybe my fault, but maybe not my fault.
- 50:59yeah.
- 51:00Good.
- 51:00Way, way to, way to come clean, Kyle.
- 51:02All right.
- 51:02So let's go to, let's go to Milroe- It's not the phone … because I, let's save
- 51:06Murphy for last if you're okay with that.
- 51:07Because- Sure … I know you wanna talk Milroe.
- 51:10I'll just pass it to you as simply as that.
- 51:12Having a nice camp.
- 51:13What are you seeing, hearing?
- 51:15What do you think Seattle's thinking?
- 51:17Because if we're talking about fullbacks and fourth tight ends, Milroe
- 51:21matters to that conversation a lot because carrying three quarterbacks
- 51:26is not what most NFL teams do, Adam.
- 51:29Adam: They don't, but John Schneider's not most GMs.
- 51:33And one of the- True … number one things that he learned from Ron Wolf
- 51:36at his time with Green Bay, and go back and think about those quarterback
- 51:40rooms, for a minute, and the names that were a part of that.
- 51:44Clinton: Not bad, not
- 51:44Adam: bad.
- 51:44I mean, you, you know about the big ones.
- 51:46You could even go back and think about other, like Mark Brunell and Ty
- 51:49Detmer and like, you know, guys who could play quarterback in this league.
- 51:54Look, they're gonna keep three quarterbacks, and they're definitely
- 51:58not trading Jalen Milroe anytime soon as much as the national media wants
- 52:02to trade him away desperately I think it's absolutely fascinating to hear
- 52:09many of the same folks who talked about what he looked like in the limited
- 52:13times that they saw him in OTAs, change their narrative completely
- 52:19from the, "He'll never figure it out.
- 52:21He can't hit the broad side of a barn from 12 feet," and "But he sure
- 52:25is fast," to, "Oh my goodness," like, "he's playing on time and in rhythm,
- 52:30and is hitting all layers of the field."
- 52:32And I thought Nemhauser did a very nice job, you know, kinda tracking his
- 52:37progress through a few, sequential days, which I think is more important than
- 52:42just being like, "Dude looked good today."
- 52:44Clinton: Right.
- 52:44Yeah, for sure.
- 52:44Adam: you know, being like, "He's stacking this."
- 52:46And you know, one of the things Brian kept talking about was,
- 52:50Milroe's ability to hit things over the middle, which he is correct about.
- 52:53Mm-hmm.
- 52:53He is, he's very good at throwing over the middle of the field.
- 52:56But he often talked about how he's not good outside the numbers, and I was
- 52:59like, "Well, that's true on deep stuff, but if you're talking about outs and
- 53:02things like that, then that's incorrect.
- 53:04He did that well in college, and he could do it from the far hash, near hash.
- 53:08It didn't, it didn't make no never mind, because dude's got an absolute
- 53:11hose, bigger hose than maybe the hose."
- 53:13So at the end of the day, it is fascinating and gratifying and,
- 53:20exciting to hear that people are starting to see that when you get somebody with
- 53:26that kind of talent, and a guy who is an accurate quarterback who suffered
- 53:30bouts of inaccuracy, not an inaccurate quarterback that could fa- occasionally
- 53:35find a couple stretches of, you know, hot streaks- what that guy looks like when
- 53:40he's had real deal NFL coaching for his first full off-season as a professional.
- 53:47And then to top it all off, Clinton-
- 53:49Clinton: Mm-hmm
- 53:49… Adam: our good buddy Dan Viens- Yeah … from Seahawks Forever, right?
- 53:52And also Sleeper Seahawks, he's doing that now as well.
- 53:55Yeah.
- 53:55So congrats to him on that, which is really awesome.
- 53:57Check him out.
- 53:58But, you know, Dan seeing him over a couple days and being like,
- 54:02"My God, he's hitting everything."
- 54:04Might've been best quarterback on the field.
- 54:06And this is such a massive deal for this team because of the upcoming
- 54:12potential Sam Darnold deal, here in the next year or so.
- 54:16And it just gives you flexibility, right?
- 54:19Like, if you decide, if you're John Schneider, you're like, "Yeah, no, I'm
- 54:22still gonna give Darnold a bag and we're gonna roll with him for the next four or
- 54:25five years," now you have a legitimate trade chip that has looked good at
- 54:28a preseason, looked good in a couple training camps, that has some experience
- 54:32with a Super Bowl caliber team that you can then flip into a high draft pick
- 54:36and help to replenish the cupboards.
- 54:38Or John could look at it and say, "Look, I really like this mid-tier
- 54:44quarterback money and what that allows me to do in terms of building a defense
- 54:48for my defensive-minded head coach so that we can win Super Bowls that way,"
- 54:52and you'll let Sam go get a bigger bag somewhere else, and you enjoy his time
- 54:57here, and you wish him nothing but the best, and then you roll with the young
- 55:00kid who looks like he's raring to go.
- 55:02So this is such a big development for this, organization because
- 55:07of what that asset could mean.
- 55:09And also, told you so.
- 55:13Clinton: I was waiting for that for about- Yeah.
- 55:15I love it.
- 55:15So I'm not gonna add too much to the, to Milroe because you said it and said
- 55:19it well, and you also properly named some of the pundits out there that
- 55:22are, that are watching it that had access or, like, he's stacking those
- 55:25days, which is really impressive.
- 55:27So I won't add there.
- 55:28What I will ask you, and I'll pivot it for a second, still, still on
- 55:31the Milroe topic, is did you see which NFL quarterback retired today?
- 55:38Adam: I did not.
- 55:38Clinton: So he's a dude you like.
- 55:41Mr.,
- 55:41Mr.
- 55:41One Glove himself, or maybe two gloves, Teddy Bridgewater.
- 55:45Oh, yeah.
- 55:45So Bridgewater, so I bring it up not because I, I know you're a Bridgewater
- 55:49fan, and he's a very competent, you know, had a, I'd say a good NFL career.
- 55:53Maybe not quite the ceiling that was expected when he was coming out of
- 55:55college, but he had terrible injury luck.
- 55:58But he had, still had a good NFL career.
- 56:00But he's on a Lions team, right?
- 56:02So you got Jared Goff, and I, I don't know who their third or now second
- 56:06is, so maybe they have somebody in the wings I'm, I'm just not thinking about.
- 56:09That's fine.
- 56:10But if Milroe is truly taking this kind of step forward, which it sounds like
- 56:15he is, and everything you just said- Would it not make a little bit of sense
- 56:20to clear a roster spot and maybe pick up the phone and see if the Lions are
- 56:25interested in a player like Drew Lock?
- 56:28Like, do you think it's too soon to pull that plug?
- 56:30Or it's like, you know what?
- 56:31There's a need.
- 56:32You need a l- look, this is a Lions team that thinks it's still in the, in the
- 56:35Super Bowl window, and they might be.
- 56:37But they certainly think they are.
- 56:40Okay, I don't, giving them a solid quarterback that if Goff goes down
- 56:45for four to six weeks, who could go in a dome and throw the ball around
- 56:49to Amon-Ra and, and Jahmyr Gibbs.
- 56:51Okay.
- 56:52So I'm just interested, interested to hear your take on, might it be time to…
- 56:57I'm not interested in shopping Millro, and I love the Hos, but
- 57:01is it time to maybe shop the Hos?
- 57:04Adam: I would say in this case, 'cause it's always, these sort of questions
- 57:09are, have completely different answers for many different teams, depending on
- 57:14where you are in the life cycle of a team in, you know, an era, a window,
- 57:21however it is that you wanna put it.
- 57:23You're, I was gonna say smack dab in the middle of, but honestly, I think we're
- 57:28at the beginning of a huge window here with legitimate Super Bowl, I'm gonna say
- 57:36favorites, rather than aspirations, right?
- 57:39Mm-hmm.
- 57:39Like, they don't just have aspirations.
- 57:41They're favorites, and they ought to be.
- 57:42They're the defending Super Bowl champions, and they didn't
- 57:44get worse this off-season.
- 57:45Mm-hmm.
- 57:46So, at the end of the day, do I want a guy to come in and take
- 57:52over for a potential Super Bowl year if heaven forbid Sam gets hurt, that
- 57:57has never done it before at the NFL level, or do I want somebody that's
- 58:02been around the league and has seen it all, and is comfortable and secure
- 58:07in his place in the world, and- Mm-hmm
- 58:09really understands the speed of the game and the league, and,
- 58:12and that sort of thing?
- 58:13I want that vet, I think, at that point.
- 58:16So I think it is too soon- Okay … to think about getting rid of Drew Lock.
- 58:20Plus, like, I, I mean, what are you gonna get for him?
- 58:24A fourth?
- 58:26Clinton: Well, in a, in a draft class that's supposedly loaded, right?
- 58:29So, you know- Sure.
- 58:30Yeah, fourth.
- 58:30Yeah … fourth, fourth round.
- 58:31Again, suppo- supposedly better talent than there was this year.
- 58:34There's, there was a coveting, "Hey, we have 12 picks," nice number.
- 58:3712, 12 picks heading into next year.
- 58:39That's on purpose.
- 58:40That's not by accident.
- 58:41So,- Yeah … you know, they, they, the, the scouts could look at the batch
- 58:45and be like, "Okay, the overall picture is there's a lot of talent sitting
- 58:47there," but maybe, maybe a fourth.
- 58:50Anyway, I thought it was an interesting topic.
- 58:51I'm not hearing others talk about it.
- 58:53Yeah.
- 58:53And I'm just, if it was, hey, I'm not saying this is a, a, we have a binary
- 58:58choice here, but if the choice was move on from Milroe at this point or
- 59:02go get something for Lock w- with a team that's in need for a, a vet backup
- 59:06QB, I would obv- I would just take the latter every single day of the week, and
- 59:11I just think it might be interesting.
- 59:13Look, if Milroe goes out and absolutely balls for two straight weeks- Mm-hmm
- 59:17… and let's say it's two weeks, like, say it's three weeks from today, and
- 59:20we're on a conversation on a Sunday night, about to head into week three-
- 59:23Adam: Mm-hmm
- 59:23… Clinton: preseason week three, it might be fun to
- 59:26revisit that very same question.
- 59:27That's, that's what I'm proposing at this point.
- 59:29Adam: I can already tell you what I'll say.
- 59:31Make Milroe QB two and keep Drew Lock at three.
- 59:34Clinton: Okay.
- 59:34All
- 59:34Adam: right.
- 59:34Like, is it better to be QB rich or QB poor?
- 59:38Clinton: QB rich- Yeah … and, and with 53, with the depth we're talking
- 59:43about, with dudes that are 6, 7 deep in wide receiver room, and the tight ends
- 59:48and the running back, there's, there's a lot of talent on this team that we ha-
- 59:53it's not, it's not a vacuum either, right?
- 59:55So if you have your two dudes, and you have some practice squad guys, your two
- 59:59QBs, and you get to then keep on the 53 a guy that you're really, really not wanting
- 1:00:04to expose, there's, there's s- there, there is more that comes with that trade
- 1:00:09than th- than just saying, "Do you, would you rather have three QBs or two QBs?"
- 1:00:14You get to keep a piece that you're not exposing, that you
- 1:00:16really believe should be on the 53.
- 1:00:19I don't know who that is, but I think that that person would matter, of course.
- 1:00:23Adam: So if you're talking about wide receiver six or QB
- 1:00:26three, which is more valuable?
- 1:00:29Clinton: It, it doesn't, it, it could be wide receiver six in, in,- Negative
- 1:00:32it, no, no, it could be because wide receiver three may never, ever,
- 1:00:36ever, ever play, and wide receiver six, there might be two injuries and
- 1:00:40the dude, the dude becomes a star.
- 1:00:42It's a, I'm not, it's, it's not a there's no way that's ever the possibility,
- 1:00:46'cause that is a possibility.
- 1:00:47Adam: Which, which, which position group is worth more to
- 1:00:50the league, quarterbacks or- I, I-
- 1:00:51wide receivers?
- 1:00:52… Clinton: I understand what you're getting at.
- 1:00:54I'm just saying- Okay … it's not in a vacuum, dude.
- 1:00:56I'm just saying, like, hey-
- 1:00:57Adam: Yeah
- 1:00:57… Clinton: if they do only keep two- Yeah … and they got back a trade
- 1:01:00chip, then you're like, "Okay, we got a fourth, and we kept a dude that we
- 1:01:03really thought was probably gonna get plucked because we're so freaking deep."
- 1:01:06So- Yeah … it, that's the equation of, like, a, maybe a fourth, maybe a fifth in
- 1:01:11a good-looking draft, and a dude retained on the 53 that you're like, "I think is
- 1:01:17gonna make an impact, and we don't have to keep wasting, call-up spots from
- 1:01:21our practice squad if you really want that, give that guy some NFL snaps."
- 1:01:24So it's just not in a vacuum is all I'm saying.
- 1:01:27So it, it could be-
- 1:01:28Adam: Yeah
- 1:01:29… Clinton: in a week or two it might be interesting to revisit
- 1:01:31this conversation if Milroe is ripping, which would be a really
- 1:01:34cool outcome and a cool conversation.
- 1:01:36Adam: It would be.
- 1:01:37I'm looking forward to it.
- 1:01:38It's one of my favorite things to be watching for,
- 1:01:41throughout this preseason.
- 1:01:43But I can, I can pretty much tell you right now, Clinton, there's no
- 1:01:50universe in which I'm gonna tell anybody, "We should keep Emmanuel Henderson Jr.
- 1:01:54instead of Drew Lock."
- 1:01:57Clinton: Okay.
- 1:01:58Adam: Th- th- th- now- I gotcha.
- 1:01:58Yeah.
- 1:01:58I understand.
- 1:01:58It could be
- 1:02:02Clinton: Emmanuel Henderson Jr.
- 1:02:03and a fourth, and, you know, so this, again, it's not, it's not just the dude.
- 1:02:07It's, it's a package that could be there.
- 1:02:09Yeah.
- 1:02:09I'm in no rush to get rid of the Hose.
- 1:02:10I think he's a perfectly cromulent NFL backup who I believe, in a
- 1:02:15stretch, and we've seen it, could play pretty darn good football.
- 1:02:18In the right system, he could throw the freaking ball around the yard, and,
- 1:02:22I'm in no rush to get rid of the guy, and I wanna give Milroe the time that this
- 1:02:27organization seems primed to give him- Yeah … to see what he could become.
- 1:02:30Yeah.
- 1:02:30So I'm okay.
- 1:02:31I'm, if that's the outcome, I'm fine with it.
- 1:02:34Just tossing out the concept that maybe John wants another bite at the apple come
- 1:02:39next year 'cause he likes those picks.
- 1:02:41Clearly, he's already amassed 12 of them.
- 1:02:44All right, we have one more topic, bud.
- 1:02:45We're gonna talk Byron Murphy.
- 1:02:47So we talked about the ascension, the gradual, slow and steady
- 1:02:51plodding ascension,- Yeah … earlier of Anthony Bradford.
- 1:02:55The, it's not the antithesis because it's still, it's still a, it's still
- 1:02:58progress, but more like the rocket ship, progress from year one to
- 1:03:03year two of Byron Murphy, and heading into year three, there's a lot in my
- 1:03:09brain, Adam, that goes, man, not just the reports, but the, the makeup of
- 1:03:15what this dude's entering, like the, his environment as a year three player
- 1:03:20to me, kinda screams he might have an absolute monster season that's even
- 1:03:26bigger and better than maybe what we're, we, what we think his ceiling can be.
- 1:03:30How are you feeling about Murphy going into year three?
- 1:03:33Adam: I've talked about this a, a bunch on the last couple shows, so I'm,
- 1:03:35I'm more curious to get a little bit more of your take actually on this, Clinton,
- 1:03:39but I wanna start it with a question.
- 1:03:41Clinton: Sure.
- 1:03:41Adam: Which is the more surprising, and quick rise to superstardom, or
- 1:03:47maybe the least surprising is, is the way to put it, Witherspoon or Murphy?
- 1:03:54Clinton: wait, okay, so which one's less surprising?
- 1:03:57Adam: Yeah.
- 1:03:59Clinton: I, I think Spoon's less surprising be- and here's why.
- 1:04:03Interesting.
- 1:04:03Okay.
- 1:04:04And because I think they're…
- 1:04:05Like, Murphy was very good on tape in college, but the sacks
- 1:04:09were not there even in college.
- 1:04:10So it was like, "Oh, are we just getting a good defensive tackle who's stout?"
- 1:04:14You know, his stature, 6'1"ish, 6'0", and h- the sacks were not there
- 1:04:19in college yet, but it was like, okay, clearly this dude's strong as an ox,
- 1:04:23and he was on a very good defensive line with the, with, the Longhorns.
- 1:04:27Spoon was jump off the tape every single week.
- 1:04:30Like, that guy's taking heads off, and so coming down and crashing from the
- 1:04:33cornerback position, a like, a clear great tackler, like, loves contact,
- 1:04:39and was clearly versatile in a really strong Illinois team that year as well.
- 1:04:44So that's, that's my…
- 1:04:45I, I think it was less surprising Spoon has had this ascension.
- 1:04:49but it's not, it's not, like, surprising that Murphy is where
- 1:04:54he is going to year three for me.
- 1:04:56Adam: Yeah, 'cause I thought about this a little bit, and honestly, like, JSN's
- 1:05:01ascension to super-duper stardom,…
- 1:05:04Well, not, again, and it, we're…
- 1:05:06Let me put the baseline on this so we don't get too crazy.
- 1:05:08Right, right.
- 1:05:08There were multiple- Like- Yeah, these were- Like- Yeah … everybody
- 1:05:10said, "These are quality picks."
- 1:05:12Like, "We're excited about 'em."
- 1:05:13I wasn't as
- 1:05:14Clinton: excited about- These are all first round- these are all high first
- 1:05:15rounders we're talking about here, right?
- 1:05:16So we get it.
- 1:05:16Adam: Right.
- 1:05:17At the time, I wasn't stoked about the JSN pick because he didn't play D
- 1:05:20tackle when we desperately needed one.
- 1:05:22Turns out we got the one we're talking about now the next year.
- 1:05:25The, but with that said, like, a lot of people looked at JSN and was
- 1:05:29like, "Ah, inside guy, I don't know that he can play outside," right?
- 1:05:31And like- Yep … so his ascension to, like, being legitimately one, two, or
- 1:05:35three, depending on how you look at it, best receiver in the league, or number
- 1:05:38third, or number three- Sure … best receiver in the league, that, that,
- 1:05:42there is some surprise there, right?
- 1:05:44To me- Yeah … Spoon's a little bit more surprising because, than
- 1:05:48Murphy, because just the size, right?
- 1:05:50Like, that was the one thing you looked at on screen, it's like you're not
- 1:05:53physically imposing and you play with this, you know, extra 30 pounds
- 1:05:58on your shoulder pad somehow that you run through people with, you know?
- 1:06:01and, you know, can you hold up?
- 1:06:04And, you know, he didn't test, like, off the charts, right?
- 1:06:08Like, he wasn't one of those workout marvels.
- 1:06:09He's a freaking football player.
- 1:06:11Mm.
- 1:06:11You know?
- 1:06:12And so, like, there's some legitimate questions to be had when, you know,
- 1:06:16he was drafted, although I, I loved the pick at the time, and- Sure
- 1:06:18… obviously we, we all love it now.
- 1:06:21To me, it's Byron Murphy is the least surprising, like, when you look at what
- 1:06:25he did at Texas and the explosiveness and the strength, and then not only that, but
- 1:06:29the leverage because of his build, right?
- 1:06:32He plays so low, and he wins the leverage right out of the gate every
- 1:06:35single time, a little like Poona Ford, but on Aaron Donald- Definitely.
- 1:06:39Yeah … type, you know- Yeah … level.
- 1:06:40And I mean, when I saw him in- You know, kinda started studying
- 1:06:45him after the pick was made.
- 1:06:47To me it was like, oh yes, all of this forever.
- 1:06:50He's going to be a super duper star.
- 1:06:53And so as we talk about his rise and the quick ascension through just two,
- 1:06:57two years in the league now going into the third, I- to me personally,
- 1:07:01I'm like, oh yeah, right on schedule.
- 1:07:03And, you know, they can talk all about Aaron Donald coming back, 89-year-old
- 1:07:08Aaron Donald who hasn't played in three years, and how he's gonna come back and be
- 1:07:12at the same, you know, first ballot Hall of Fame level that he was when he retired.
- 1:07:15They can do that.
- 1:07:16They're, they're welcome to do it.
- 1:07:17I mean, everybody lives in delusion in some way or another, and that's fine.
- 1:07:20I'm really excited about the guy who is the next at that position, and is just
- 1:07:27beginning to scratch his prime, and has the attitude to be able to unlock it.
- 1:07:32Byron Murphy's ascension over the last couple years, and then hearing, like,
- 1:07:36what he's going through in terms of his goals and, you know, what he's trying
- 1:07:40to get to in pass rush situations, it's [bleep] exciting, dude.
- 1:07:47Like, it- there's no other way to put it.
- 1:07:49that's the type of guy that I mean, we saw the impact that Prime
- 1:07:54Aaron Donald had for the Rams defense.
- 1:07:57That's what we're witnessing now with-
- 1:07:58Clinton: Mm
- 1:07:59… Adam: Byron Murphy, and he still has Leo and- DeMarcus … and
- 1:08:04Riley Mills and Jarran Reed.
- 1:08:06Right.
- 1:08:06Like, all that around him.
- 1:08:07It's, dude, it's outrageous, and I couldn't be more giddy about it.
- 1:08:10Clinton: Yeah.
- 1:08:11so I, I echo all that i- in, in the sense that I think
- 1:08:15that year three, i- it's…
- 1:08:17Year two was really, I mean, for him to not make Pro Bowl or, or be like
- 1:08:22no All-Pro, no Pro Bowl, which I think what, what we do wanna talk about too
- 1:08:24is, like, he has a ch- he's actively out there- Yeah … like, a little chip on
- 1:08:29his shoulder being like, "You need to pay attention to me out here," and seemingly
- 1:08:32is training and, and just the maturation, and again, the team he's got around him,
- 1:08:37like, adding a player like Riley Mills.
- 1:08:39Yes, year two, but not really.
- 1:08:41Like, adding a Riley Mills, and it's just all bubbling up to, like, yeah, like, this
- 1:08:47dude could take a- another step, which is already at a incredibly high level.
- 1:08:53And the Texas stuff, it's just that the sacks were not there.
- 1:08:56That's all.
- 1:08:57And, and they're high variance anyway, but the sacks were not there.
- 1:09:00Adam: Especially for that position,
- 1:09:01Clinton: right?
- 1:09:02That's, of course, defensive tackle, you're not, you know, you're not
- 1:09:04really supposed to go get double-digit sacks or eight or nine or 12 or 14
- 1:09:08sacks from playing a zero, one, or, or sometimes scooching over to the three.
- 1:09:12You're just not.
- 1:09:14But, and also by the way, while you're going down to one knee to
- 1:09:17take on two dudes so that you could keep, you know, Ernest Jones
- 1:09:20super clean so he can get a tackle for a loss or a tackle or two yard, a
- 1:09:23two-yard gain or s- stuff like that.
- 1:09:25So he just does it all.
- 1:09:27I, of all the players, I don't know who I'm most excited about to watch this year.
- 1:09:33It's not even, like, watch.
- 1:09:34It, it's just more like monitor a- and those are different things.
- 1:09:38You know?
- 1:09:39Mm.
- 1:09:39But, they really are different things.
- 1:09:41But to monitor, like, what he's gonna do this year, I just feel that i- it's
- 1:09:47coming to this head of superstardom, where he's going to be like, "Your
- 1:09:53refusal to watch my body of work the first two seasons," year one was good,
- 1:09:57year two was damn good, and, like, the refusal for the, the NFL wide to
- 1:10:03really recognize him as a superstar, I think he took that personally, Adam.
- 1:10:07I think he's taking it personally, and I think he's gonna have one of these,
- 1:10:10like, too big to fail type things.
- 1:10:12Like, you no longer get the right to ignore what I did this season.
- 1:10:16That's the kinda season I think he's shaping up to produce, and I think that
- 1:10:21means really good things for our Seahawks.
- 1:10:23I'm just very high on him as a, as ascension into being a leader also through
- 1:10:29that play, while you have dudes like Leo and Delaw and Reed who are on the, let's
- 1:10:35say, last third of their, their careers.
- 1:10:37Yeah.
- 1:10:37Great careers.
- 1:10:39That's kind of where I put him, man.
- 1:10:40He's gonna be so exciting to kinda, I, I keep using that word monitor,
- 1:10:44'cause it just feels like that's…
- 1:10:46I don't need to watch him every single, like I don't…
- 1:10:47I'm gonna watch every game, man.
- 1:10:49I'm gonna watch every single play.
- 1:10:50I don't gotta worry about him, but I wanna watch the little things
- 1:10:54that's making him into that superstar that I think he's gonna become.
- 1:10:58Adam: Well, good luck catching him, 'cause he's so damn quick for that size.
- 1:11:01And I think one of the things you touched on is, you know, I took that personal.
- 1:11:05I mean, he has that Jordan mentality, right?
- 1:11:08Clinton: Yeah.
- 1:11:08Adam: And you can see it, it oozes off the screen in his interviews, and I think
- 1:11:14he'll take it even a step further of you no longer have the right to overlook me.
- 1:11:18That's what I'm saying.
- 1:11:18It's, it's I am taking away the option-
- 1:11:20Clinton: Yeah,
- 1:11:21Adam: right … that you're going to overlook me.
- 1:11:22There will be no overlooking me.
- 1:11:24You cannot do it and have eyeballs.
- 1:11:27Like, it, it'll be impossible, and I'm here for it, man.
- 1:11:31One of my favorite players.
- 1:11:32Love the draft pick, love what that means to build your team
- 1:11:36that way from the inside out.
- 1:11:38Clinton: Mm-hmm.
- 1:11:38Adam: And oh gosh, having him as your interior anchor for the next
- 1:11:4410 years, terrorizing every NFC West quarterback, yes please.
- 1:11:51I cannot wait
- 1:11:53Clinton: it's gonna be very fun when he's chasing Carson
- 1:11:55Beck for the next decade, 'cause, Carson Beck- Carson who?
- 1:11:59Clearly the, the king of the preseason, so- Oh, he's played
- 1:12:01Adam: great in the Hall of Fame Game, and now he's in the c-
- 1:12:04starting conversation over brisket.
- 1:12:06Okay.
- 1:12:07Clinton: I, I love it.
- 1:12:08That was a lot of fun.
- 1:12:09Hey, so we went through the six categories.
- 1:12:10We did news and notes, and I wanna remind folks, so Tuesday night, so Hard Knocks

- 1:12:37like, live reporting, what did he see, what was looking good for him out there.

- 1:12:54Adam: It's back.
- 1:12:56It's here.
- 1:12:56It's time.
- 1:12:57I can't wait, and, I can't wait to have to talk about training camp reports.
- 1:13:02I can't wait to, stop having to break down, press conferences and look for
- 1:13:08meaning, through all of the coach speak that everybody uses these days.
- 1:13:13I cannot wait to watch the Seahawks go out and whip the Cowboys'
- 1:13:18ass and see Shoddy go home sad.
- 1:13:21Even though I like Shoddy, you're going home sad.
- 1:13:23Clinton: He's going home big sad.

- 1:13:47Adam: There's only one thing left to say
- 1:13:48Clinton: Go Hawks.
- 1:13:49Adam: Go Hawks.
