- 0:00Today, I am going to reframe the way that you look at your network.
- 0:13We all know your network is your net worth, but I'm going to give you a few different ideas
- 0:18on how to properly build a network one that's actually useful way before you need it.
- 0:24So today we're going to talk about how networking is a skill, but it's not one that they teach
- 0:28you in school.
- 0:29Let me give you lessons on how to build genuine connections, how to give before you ask
- 0:33or how to curate a personal board of directors.
- 0:35I'm going to teach over my personal playbook that I've developed to network better, which
- 0:40includes becoming a talent scout, curating a personal board of directors and becoming
- 0:44a reverse mentor.
- 0:45We're going to talk about how your entire career and life can change the moment you stop
- 0:51seeing networking as a chore and start seeing it as a strategic advantage.
- 0:56So I'm sure you've all heard the saying, don't call me unless you need something.
- 1:01That is the exact opposite of how to build a powerful network.
- 1:06Here's a thought.
- 1:07The strongest relationships are forged in the fires of mutual support, not the desperation
- 1:13of last minute asks.
- 1:15Let me share a story.
- 1:16Back when I was first starting out, hustling to get my podcast off the ground, I had this
- 1:20mentor Sarah.
- 1:21She was a powerhouse in the industry.
- 1:23She was someone who I deeply admired.
- 1:25But here's a thing, I didn't just reach out to Sarah when I needed funding advice or
- 1:30a warm intro to one of her contacts.
- 1:32I grabbed coffee with her when I didn't need anything at all.
- 1:35We catch up.
- 1:36I'd share my small wins and setbacks just to give her perspective and over time, a real
- 1:41friendship blossom.
- 1:43It turns out I didn't need anything at all for about three years.
- 1:47And guess what?
- 1:48When the time came that I did need something, a crucial connection, a sounding board for
- 1:53a tough decision.
- 1:54Sarah was there in a heartbeat, not out of obligation, but because we had built a genuine
- 1:59bond.
- 2:00Think about it.
- 2:01When you reach out to somebody only when you're in need, it's like waving a giant flag
- 2:05that says, I'm using you.
- 2:07It feels transactional, even desperate.
- 2:09Nobody likes to feel used.
- 2:11But when you reach out genuinely to offer support, share insights or just say hello, you're
- 2:17building something far more valuable.
- 2:19Trust.
- 2:20Controlling that you value the relationship for its own sake, not just for what you can
- 2:25get out of it.
- 2:26Trust is worth its weight in gold.
- 2:28It's the currency of a powerful network.
- 2:31One, that will have your back when you need it most.
- 2:34So don't be that person who only shows up when they want something.
- 2:38Be the person who invests in relationships before they need them.
- 2:41Now, have you ever been caught off guard by a professional setback?
- 2:46Think about it.
- 2:47A dream job fell through.
- 2:49A project got derailed or a client suddenly went dark.
- 2:53It's in those moments that it's very easy to feel isolated and overwhelmed.
- 2:58That's when you need people.
- 3:00That's also when you can't reach out to people.
- 3:03Tap into the best of us.
- 3:04We wish we had a network of people we could turn to for support for advice or even a new
- 3:09lead, but that's the power of strategic networking.
- 3:12You have to build that network that can support you before you need it.
- 3:16How do you do that?
- 3:17Here's a system I developed to network better.
- 3:20Build relationships before you need them so that you're never starting from scratch when
- 3:23the unexpected happens.
- 3:25This is the networking system that I've developed.
- 3:27It's three strategies to build true ties.
- 3:30Now, the first strategy is to become a talent scout.
- 3:34There's a saying it says bet on the jockey, not on the horse, and the same goes for your
- 3:38network.
- 3:39Don't just collect business cards, invest in people.
- 3:42So you want to scout out the rising stars, the ones with that fire in their eyes.
- 3:47They're the future CEOs, disruptors, game changers, spot the talent, the drive, and
- 3:53the vision.
- 3:54Be their champion.
- 3:56Mentor them.
- 3:57Share your hard one wisdom, open doors.
- 3:59They didn't even know existed as they rise so do you.
- 4:03See, building a network isn't about quantity.
- 4:05It's about quality.
- 4:07And when you bet on the jockey, you'll win the race.
- 4:10The second strategy is to become a reverse mentor.
- 4:13You've just scouted new talent.
- 4:14Now it's time to tap into wisdom and experience.
- 4:17So the concept of the reverse mentor is that mentorship isn't a one way street.
- 4:22It's a two way exchange of knowledge and perspective.
- 4:25So you want to flip the script and become what I call reverse mentor.
- 4:29So you don't just seek wisdom.
- 4:30You offer yours in return and the caveat is you'll offer yours before you need help.
- 4:35So your fresh perspective on emerging tech, digital trends, innovative solutions.
- 4:40This is gold to those people who hold power.
- 4:43You're going to find the problem in somebody's life who is steps ahead of you and help
- 4:48them solve it.
- 4:49Now, how do you do this?
- 4:50We're going to pinpoint your power.
- 4:52What unique skills or insights do you have that a senior leader could benefit from?
- 4:56You're going to target the right players.
- 4:57You're going to look for open minded leaders who value diverse perspectives.
- 5:01You're going to make your pitch, show them how your knowledge can solve their problems
- 5:04or drive their goals.
- 5:05And you're going to start the conversation.
- 5:07Don't be afraid to reach out and offer your expertise.
- 5:09You're going to become the trusted advisor.
- 5:11You're going to build cross generational bridges and you're going to accelerate your own
- 5:15career.
- 5:16Remember, the student can become the teacher.
- 5:18And the third strategy is to build your own personal board of directors.
- 5:23Jim Rohn famously said, you are the average of the five people you spend the most time
- 5:27with.
- 5:28You want to elevate your average.
- 5:30Hand pick your board of directors.
- 5:32Not just mentors and colleagues, but your trusted advisors.
- 5:35You're going to seek diversity, experience, skills, perspectives.
- 5:38You're going to surround yourself with those who've been there, done that and those who
- 5:41challenge you to think differently.
- 5:43You're going to invest in these relationships.
- 5:45You're going to be present.
- 5:46You're going to be supportive.
- 5:47You're going to be the kind of friend to these people that you wish you had.
- 5:51And when failure strikes, this is your 18.
- 5:53They're going to offer you guidance.
- 5:55They're going to give you diverse perspective.
- 5:57They're going to give you unwavering support.
- 5:59Your board of directors isn't just a network.
- 6:01It's your life line.
- 6:02So I want you to stop chasing connections.
- 6:05I want you to start cultivating relationships, ditch the transactional mindset and embrace
- 6:11genuine connection, invest in people, not just business cards.
- 6:14Remember, the strongest networks aren't built on desperation.
- 6:17They're built on mutual support, trust and shared ambition.
- 6:20This isn't just about climbing the ladder faster.
- 6:23It's about building a community around you that will catch you if you fall, push you
- 6:27when you hesitate and celebrate with you when you win.
- 6:31Your network isn't just a safety net, it's your launch pad.
- 6:34This is how you network properly.
