Transcript
- 0:03Speaker 1: So I've successfully replaced Joakim with 3 very capable people
- 0:07Speaker 1: that are joining me on air right now. They're actually
- 0:11Speaker 1: from a student-led project under Unboxed. Say hi to Ashton, Anthea,
- 0:16Speaker 1: and Joel. Welcome. Hi.
- 0:20Speaker 1: Welcome. OK. Now, we've been talking about this all morning
- 0:23Speaker 1: and I think soon you might have some friends joining
- 0:25Speaker 1: us on TikTok Live. We're also live over there if
- 0:27Speaker 1: you have any questions, by the way. First up, let's
- 0:29Speaker 1: just get to know you and your projects a little
- 0:31Speaker 1: bit better. Tell us more about Unboxed for the people
- 0:34Speaker 1: that don't know what it is. Um, Anthea, do you
- 0:36Speaker 1: want to take that? OK, so Unboxed is actually a
- 0:39Speaker 1: math tuition center. So like they specialize in like, um,
- 0:44Speaker 1: Uh, primary school, secondary school, a math, Emth, all that.
- 0:47Speaker 1: So if you need math help, go to them because
- 0:49Speaker 1: they saved my math. E math or A math because
- 0:52Speaker 1: my A math was what, I cannot help, man. They
- 0:54Speaker 1: saved both both. OK, my A math has been failing
- 0:57Speaker 1: for the longest time. Me too. I feel for the
- 0:59Speaker 1: longest time. The O levels, I clutched. They clutched, we clutched.
- 1:03Speaker 1: Yeah, OK. So, uh, Unbox basically outside of just being
- 1:08Speaker 1: a math tuition center, they also power like, uh, they
- 1:11Speaker 1: help to power through startups like us. So it's not
- 1:13Speaker 1: really a startup, it's more of a student initiative where
- 1:16Speaker 1: we want to do more for the community, do more like, uh,
- 1:19Speaker 1: we also have like sports events. It's not just, um,
- 1:23Speaker 1: it's not just per se, just like.
- 1:26Speaker 1: Education wise, it's really quite holistic. They really believe in
- 1:30Speaker 1: holistic development for the child, for a child. And it's
- 1:33Speaker 1: kind of cool that, you know, they and you and
- 1:36Speaker 1: together with them also started off like a bit of
- 1:38Speaker 1: a series online as well. Like, would you call it
- 1:41Speaker 1: a podcast or a talk show or how would you
- 1:43Speaker 1: label it? A podcast, yeah, right, in a way. And
- 1:47Speaker 1: I mean, I like the messaging behind it because it
- 1:49Speaker 1: does cover a lot of things I wish I knew.
- 1:51Speaker 1: As as a student, right? So, OK, um, who's ready
- 1:54Speaker 1: to tell me a little bit more about the project? Um, me. Alright,
- 1:58Speaker 1: go ahead, Ashton. So basically, the main gist of unemployed
- 2:03Speaker 1: is us unemployed people, us students, we get to ask
- 2:07Speaker 1: raw and real world questions to like those that we
- 2:11Speaker 1: hope to be like our industry experts and our future
- 2:15Speaker 1: jobs as well. So actually, it's all just like
- 2:20Speaker 1: Just a place for us to learn more about the
- 2:22Speaker 1: working world because as students and especially I think we
- 2:26Speaker 1: can say many of our youth don't really know what
- 2:29Speaker 1: we want to do and what we need to do
- 2:31Speaker 1: to get into a certain job, for example. Do you
- 2:35Speaker 1: have any idea what you want to do? I mean,
- 2:37Speaker 1: I'm assuming you're what, like 18 or 1717. Are you
- 2:40Speaker 1: turning 18 this year at least? You're turning 17.
- 2:44Speaker 1: Alright, turning 17, 0, man, like when I look back
- 2:47Speaker 1: at myself at 17 or 18, I honestly, I had
- 2:50Speaker 1: a rough idea, but I ended up going in a
- 2:53Speaker 1: completely different direction. Like I wanted to be a journalist actually.
- 2:57Speaker 1: I'm not exactly doing journalism right now. It's loosely related,
- 3:00Speaker 1: still in the media, about there, somewhere there. But sometimes
- 3:04Speaker 1: life takes a different turn. So maybe let's go from
- 3:06Speaker 1: Joel right now. Do you have any idea at this
- 3:09Speaker 1: point at 17?
- 3:11Speaker 1: A vague idea of what you want to do in
- 3:13Speaker 1: the future. Alright, so
- 3:14Speaker 2: right now I am studying underneath's optometry. So I would,
- 3:19Speaker 2: I mean, I would say I want to go to
- 3:21Speaker 2: the healthcare sector, either being an optometrist, if not, maybe
- 3:26Speaker 2: I can change into something like a doctor, if not
- 3:29Speaker 2: a physiotherapist will work also.
- 3:34Speaker 1: Sector. OK, so he's quite clear on that. Oh, what
- 3:37Speaker 1: about the two of you? OK, so for me, I'm
- 3:40Speaker 1: studying at Singapore. So I actually, I think I kind
- 3:46Speaker 1: of knew what I wanted to do from the very
- 3:49Speaker 1: start because, uh, like, actually from the time my father
- 3:52Speaker 1: like kind of like, he, he would tell me like, oh,
- 3:54Speaker 1: you're good at this.
- 3:56Speaker 1: Yeah, because like I kind of know what I'm bad at,
- 3:59Speaker 1: but then he would tell me, oh, you're good at this,
- 4:00Speaker 1: maybe you should like explore this. So, um, I, I
- 4:04Speaker 1: explore like MCing, hosting, like I love like all these
- 4:08Speaker 1: like live talking. I can tell you you're very extroverted
- 4:13Speaker 1: a bit more extroverted.
- 4:14Speaker 1: Yeah, so I want to go into the media industry,
- 4:16Speaker 1: maybe to do something like you, yeah, or like I
- 4:19Speaker 1: also like I kind of actually since I really look
- 4:22Speaker 1: at those like news reporters and I'm like, me too,
- 4:25Speaker 1: I kind of want to be like them. I know
- 4:27Speaker 1: it's a it's and I dabbled in a bit of
- 4:29Speaker 1: that in my internship, but uh.
- 4:33Speaker 1: My internship was completely different from what I'm doing right now.
- 4:36Speaker 1: Like it was complete opposite. Yeah. In fact, if you
- 4:39Speaker 1: look down here at CNA later on, I'll show you, OK.
- 4:43Speaker 1: Um, and I was one of the news assistants, like
- 4:45Speaker 1: pulling stories and like writing stuff at 3 a.m. in
- 4:47Speaker 1: the morning. That was me. I know 3 a.m. Not
- 4:50Speaker 1: much different now. So 5 plus in the morning now,
- 4:52Speaker 1: not much different. OK, so what about you, Ashton? Any
- 4:55Speaker 1: vague idea of what you want to do? I mean,
- 4:58Speaker 1: I can say that me and are very similar. I
- 5:01Speaker 1: think that's why we are very good friends. OK, OK.
- 5:05Speaker 1: So me and Ann, both of us, we are very
- 5:07Speaker 1: creative people. So now I'm actually in
- 5:10Speaker 1: Your school, I mean FMS, yes. So, I mean, I
- 5:18Speaker 1: knew that I was always very creative, but and like I'm,
- 5:22Speaker 1: I love talking to people but I just really don't
- 5:24Speaker 1: know what I want to do in the media industry specifically, yeah, correct.
- 5:28Speaker 1: But I think that's what the poly education system is
- 5:31Speaker 1: going to help you with, right? Like you get to
- 5:32Speaker 1: try different modules and then you get to narrow it down. OK,
- 5:35Speaker 1: so since you've just kind of started, this is year
- 5:38Speaker 1: one in poly right now, right?
- 5:40Speaker 1: Has there been any progress so far at narrowing down
- 5:44Speaker 1: what your talents are and what you, what's calling your
- 5:47Speaker 1: name at this point, um, Anthea? Actually, I kind of
- 5:51Speaker 1: realized that maybe, um, like planning is not something that
- 5:58Speaker 1: I enjoy. I think I like being like live. I
- 6:02Speaker 1: like being, I like being in front of the camera.
- 6:05Speaker 1: I don't like all the like I mean I mean
- 6:07Speaker 1: I have to do that.
- 6:09Speaker 1: I mean, but like, I'm just like, I prefer, I
- 6:12Speaker 1: prefer to be in front of the camera talking, just
- 6:16Speaker 1: very having doing the fun stuff. Yeah, mainly before being
- 6:19Speaker 1: in front of the camera. Yeah, I get you. With
- 6:22Speaker 1: that comes a lot of stuff that you have to.
- 6:25Speaker 1: But I, I'm with you, girl. I'm bad. Give me
- 6:27Speaker 1: an Excel sheet, I'll black out, honestly, like I can't,
- 6:29Speaker 1: I'll fade out. I'll fade out for sure. OK, um,
- 6:33Speaker 1: for you, Joel, like now that you've been in optometry
- 6:36Speaker 1: for the year one so far.
- 6:39Speaker 1: Has it cemented your idea that yes, this is what
- 6:42Speaker 1: I want to do in the future?
- 6:44Speaker 2: I mean, of course, I want to do this in
- 6:47Speaker 2: the future, so I think that I have like a
- 6:51Speaker 2: few different modules now. I'm like really enjoying. I have
- 6:56Speaker 2: 3 modules, so one of the modules I'm enjoying more
- 6:59Speaker 2: than like another one, so maybe I will try to
- 7:01Speaker 2: branch my career into that module. So let's say for
- 7:06Speaker 2: Let's say the physical optics module, right? So maybe if
- 7:08Speaker 2: I really like that module, I might go into like,
- 7:11Speaker 2: let's say making spectacles, context or that kind of thing, yeah,
- 7:16Speaker 1: yeah, yeah, yeah, exactly like the frames, right? OK, so
- 7:19Speaker 1: then seeing how all of you came together from different backgrounds,
- 7:23Speaker 1: different schools, and it's, it's more than the three of
- 7:26Speaker 1: you in this project. What has it taught you so far?
- 7:30Speaker 1: Like getting together and
- 7:31Speaker 1: Discussing all these interesting topics and what was that one
- 7:35Speaker 1: moment where you're like, OK, I'm really learning a lot
- 7:37Speaker 1: in getting exposed to different people from different backgrounds. Uh,
- 7:41Speaker 1: do you want to start, Ashton? Yeah. Um, I think
- 7:44Speaker 1: for me, I, I actually did a internship with Unbox
- 7:49Speaker 1: with Faith and she brought me along to one of
- 7:52Speaker 1: their soft launches and like one of their grand openings
- 7:55Speaker 1: to do marketing content. So it was a bit
- 8:00Speaker 1: Spontaneous, she brought me like there on that day and
- 8:03Speaker 1: it was kind of scary because it's my first time
- 8:06Speaker 1: really like, I don't know what to do, I don't
- 8:07Speaker 1: want to record, like I was so scared, OK, and
- 8:11Speaker 1: then I went there and I just walked around to
- 8:14Speaker 1: see what content I could take and I think one
- 8:18Speaker 1: thing I learned from her was that
- 8:20Speaker 1: Like we need to look around, OK, yes, correct, and
- 8:26Speaker 1: I think by observing, right, I really saw how because
- 8:29Speaker 1: when we actually had that launch, we had different like
- 8:32Speaker 1: rooted play. Rooted play is like more of a like
- 8:36Speaker 1: a play based like for like early childhood, like early,
- 8:40Speaker 1: like kindergarteners or like early primary school.
- 8:44Speaker 1: And I saw how a lot of the people here
- 8:48Speaker 1: in Unbox, they were so dedicated and very passionate about
- 8:51Speaker 1: what they do and it makes me
- 8:54Speaker 1: It rubs off you, yeah, inspires you. I mean, I could,
- 8:58Speaker 1: I could say that I'm very passionate person in my craft,
- 9:02Speaker 1: in being creative. I love being creative, really love being creative. I, right? OK.
- 9:11Speaker 1: So then talking about the series called Unemployed right now.
- 9:15Speaker 1: I mean people always say like funemployed, unemployed. You know
- 9:17Speaker 1: my friends sometimes when they are switching jobs, they're like,
- 9:19Speaker 1: oh yeah, funemployed.
- 9:20Speaker 1: But for you, it's a bit different because you are
- 9:22Speaker 1: going into a phase of life where you want to
- 9:24Speaker 1: be employed soon. So what happens when you actually become employed?
- 9:29Speaker 1: And like, that's the name, will you still continue this?
- 9:31Speaker 1: Will the name change or like what's happening? I mean,
- 9:34Speaker 1: we're still in the early stages. Yes, you are very
- 9:36Speaker 1: early stages. So you never know, maybe next time you'll
- 9:38Speaker 1: see like three of us, like 37 year olds, we're
- 9:42Speaker 1: employed now.
- 9:44Speaker 1: But it's been a happy 10 year anniversary for our podcast.
- 9:48Speaker 1: 20 years, sorry. Oh yeah, yeah, you're, you're only 17,
- 9:51Speaker 1: my gosh. When we come back, we're gonna take a
- 9:54Speaker 1: short little break. When we come back, um, I would
- 9:56Speaker 1: love for you to share a little bit more about
- 9:57Speaker 1: some of the pivotal moments that you've shared during your
- 10:02Speaker 1: project and your podcast, and maybe some of the episodes
- 10:05Speaker 1: that really stood out to you and the topics that
- 10:07Speaker 1: you learned a lot, but I'm not alone.
- 10:09Speaker 1: Even though I'm flying solo for the whole week, but
- 10:11Speaker 1: I've replaced Joakim with three wonderful people. Welcome back, Ashton, Anthea,
- 10:15Speaker 1: and Joel. Woo! And they're leading a student-run project under Unboxed. Um,
- 10:22Speaker 1: I would love to know more, a little bit about
- 10:24Speaker 1: your podcast actually. So you're 2 episodes in right now.
- 10:28Speaker 1: What have you covered so far? I mean, I've viewed
- 10:30Speaker 1: one of them. Please share with our audience and our
- 10:33Speaker 1: listeners who
- 10:33Speaker 1: Don't really know it just yet. This is your chance
- 10:35Speaker 1: to plug it. Go ahead.
- 10:36Speaker 1: Who wants to go?
- 10:37Speaker 2: I think so now we have two episodes so far.
- 10:39Speaker 2: First one is with Eugene, which is the founder of Stuff,
- 10:42Speaker 2: and second one is Royalec, which is a social media influencer.
- 10:47Speaker 2: So Eugene, we just wanted to know like how he
- 10:49Speaker 2: got under the Forbes 300 under 30 list, and then
- 10:54Speaker 2: we essentially just ask him questions about the real world, the.
- 10:59Speaker 2: How he managed to create up this startup then for
- 11:02Speaker 2: Royal Pack we just asked like how do we, how
- 11:07Speaker 2: he used to be from JC, right, but then he
- 11:11Speaker 2: says he had a very good career in like the finance, right,
- 11:17Speaker 2: but then in the end he chose to turn into
- 11:20Speaker 2: the
- 11:21Speaker 2: Into a social media influencer. Yeah,
- 11:27Speaker 1: I will take you on a different path altogether. Like
- 11:34Speaker 1: you may not even end up pursuing what you're studying
- 11:36Speaker 1: right now.
- 11:36Speaker 1: Not that that's a bad thing, right? I mean, that
- 11:38Speaker 1: has happened. Yeah. So then, in the upcoming episode, which
- 11:42Speaker 1: I will be in, maybe give me a little bit
- 11:44Speaker 1: of an idea of what we're gonna do. I mean,
- 11:46Speaker 1: I already know, but yes, give our listeners a teaser. OK,
- 11:49Speaker 1: so basically in your episode, we're kind of like, uh, we,
- 11:53Speaker 1: because your job is more unconventional, it's not like doctor, lawyer, teacher.
- 11:58Speaker 1: So is that still what is considered conventional now?
- 12:03Speaker 1: Really in your generation, really. Actually that's why you see
- 12:06Speaker 1: like with our Eugene episode and our Royal Pack episode,
- 12:09Speaker 1: it's more unconventional like he's an entrepreneur, Eugene is an entrepreneur,
- 12:12Speaker 1: and then Royal is an influencer. It's more unconventional and
- 12:15Speaker 1: you are a radio DJ. So
- 12:18Speaker 1: It's more, we kind of like want to dive into
- 12:21Speaker 1: how do we get there? How do you get to
- 12:23Speaker 1: these unconventional jobs? What paths do they take? Or like,
- 12:26Speaker 1: like you said, life will take you on a different path.
- 12:28Speaker 1: So no matter what.
- 12:30Speaker 1: It's more of educating youth on um the pathways that
- 12:34Speaker 1: you can take that's unconventional and also like the real
- 12:38Speaker 1: side of the job. I mean, we all know that
- 12:41Speaker 1: it's not like all butterflies and unicorns in the job,
- 12:44Speaker 1: especially as like an entrepreneur, social media influencer, you have
- 12:47Speaker 1: to deal with the dark side. TikTok and Instagram, right? Yeah,
- 12:52Speaker 1: so we kind of want to dive in.
- 12:55Speaker 1: Not the bad side, but the real side. I like that. Yeah. OK,
- 13:00Speaker 1: so in, in the process of all of this, and
- 13:03Speaker 1: you know, you sound like you've done a lot of
- 13:05Speaker 1: research already. How do you then brainstorm to come up
- 13:08Speaker 1: with like a topic for a certain guest during each episode?
- 13:11Speaker 1: Because I'm assuming
- 13:13Speaker 1: You're not gonna stop at 3 apps. It's gonna go
- 13:14Speaker 1: on hopefully for a long time. Yeah. So how do
- 13:18Speaker 1: you brainstorm and match the topic to the, the, the
- 13:21Speaker 1: person or the guest, because I'm usually on the side
- 13:24Speaker 1: of the interviewer. So now it's gonna be a flip side.
- 13:27Speaker 1: Anybody want to pick it up? I think we,
- 13:29Speaker 2: we do our own research. So let's say, how, what
- 13:37Speaker 2: career path, what education path did the
- 13:40Speaker 2: Did our guests take so maybe did they go to poly?
- 13:44Speaker 2: Did they go to JC? Did they take uni in
- 13:47Speaker 2: the end? And then after that we will come together.
- 13:51Speaker 2: Everyone has like this Google Doc, so we will come together,
- 13:53Speaker 2: put the points in. Then after that we had a
- 13:56Speaker 2: mahjong paper, right? So you went to go buy the
- 13:59Speaker 2: huge mahjong paper. That's
- 14:00Speaker 1: old school, man. I'm surprised. Like I don't even bring
- 14:02Speaker 1: a pen around. So we
- 14:04Speaker 2: had
- 14:04Speaker 2: the mahjong paper. Then we branched out into 5 different branches.
- 14:07Speaker 2: After that, we just, we just sat down there for
- 14:10Speaker 2: a good 10 minutes and we just took post-it, post-its
- 14:13Speaker 2: and just ask whatever that was on our mind at
- 14:15Speaker 2: that time, yeah.
- 14:18Speaker 1: Yes, yes, we did. I'm project manager. Yes, yes. OK. Alright.
- 14:23Speaker 1: So um before I let you guys go, last couple
- 14:26Speaker 1: of questions here.
- 14:27Speaker 1: Um, anything that you want to share with our audience
- 14:30Speaker 1: right now because our listeners range from people who are
- 14:33Speaker 1: younger than you to like people who have just started
- 14:35Speaker 1: their jobs to like young adults, right? And I'm guessing
- 14:38Speaker 1: that your main audience right now on your podcast and
- 14:41Speaker 1: your project, they're mostly students, just like, just like all
- 14:44Speaker 1: of you? Yeah? OK, so what so far have you
- 14:47Speaker 1: learned from your viewers and your listeners? Have they given
- 14:49Speaker 1: you any feedback? Have they given you any comments so far?
- 14:53Speaker 1: Uh, for me it's mainly the comments that I've heard
- 14:56Speaker 1: is that sometimes podcasts can get a little bit too
- 14:58Speaker 1: long and being Gen Z, our our attention span, it's
- 15:02Speaker 1: max 10 seconds of TikTok video. Yeah, so I think
- 15:05Speaker 1: we will definitely branch out to like short form videos
- 15:08Speaker 1: and also, uh, yeah, we'll cut down the interviews. So
- 15:11Speaker 1: that's actually what we will be doing in our post-production
- 15:15Speaker 1: so that you will see that for you, for your.
- 15:17Speaker 1: interview for Royal P interview, all these, yeah. So that's
- 15:20Speaker 1: mainly what we have heard from our audiences and also
- 15:23Speaker 1: that they've also told us like what jobs they really
- 15:26Speaker 1: want to hear about because like we are you, so
- 15:28Speaker 1: mainly what we want to know like how we start
- 15:31Speaker 1: out with like who we interview it's what we want
- 15:33Speaker 1: to know your friends and stuff, right? So we are
- 15:37Speaker 1: like technically we are our audience. Yes, exactly, so you
- 15:40Speaker 1: know your audience.
- 15:41Speaker 1: And sex, right. So we kind of like ask them like, oh,
- 15:43Speaker 1: who do you want to see? What, who do you
- 15:45Speaker 1: want to know more about? Like what, what job do
- 15:47Speaker 1: you want to know more about? Yeah, so that's how
- 15:49Speaker 1: we really start and like we also, that's how we
- 15:51Speaker 1: listen to our audiences and deliver what they want. I
- 15:54Speaker 1: love that. Thank you so much for having the courage
- 15:56Speaker 1: to be on air, live on a morning drive time show.
- 15:59Speaker 1: Not everyone can do that, to be honest. I really
- 16:02Speaker 1: applaud you for that. I don't think I was able
- 16:03Speaker 1: to do that at 17. So before I let you go,
- 16:06Speaker 1: please tell us where we can follow you, your podcast,
- 16:09Speaker 1: your project.
- 16:10Speaker 1: Anybody.
- 16:13Speaker 1: You can follow us. Uh, you will know more about
- 16:16Speaker 1: us at exposure. So it's the big X and then
- 16:19Speaker 1: P O S U R E. OK, just go on
- 16:23Speaker 1: 97 FM Instagram story and you'll see our ad there.
- 16:27Speaker 1: Both our ads there. We posted it up there. OK.
- 16:29Speaker 1: Um we're still live on TikTok and then we're gonna
- 16:31Speaker 1: do a little own podcast episode in the studio as
- 16:35Speaker 1: well later on.
