- 0:05My name is Rafael and I' m a doctor. After two years of
- 0:08fighting unemployment, I finally saw a light at the end of the tunnel in
- 0:13the form of a job offer in a remote town of Chiapas, Mexico.
- 0:17Since I wish to protect the inhabitants of the village, I will not give
- 0:21the name of it. Despite the distance, I did not hesitate to accept
- 0:26the night before my departure. I had a strange dream that still haunts me.
- 0:31I was alone in the middle of a thick forest and in the distance,
- 0:35a deer. He was staring at me. That was all I could
- 0:37remember from that dream, but I woke up sweating and trembling, unable to
- 0:42go back to sleep. When I arrived in the village I was greeted with
- 0:47warmth. People mostly indigenous, seemed genuinely grateful to have a doctor in their
- 0:53community. I was assigned a small and humble cabin that was quite removed from
- 0:59the other faces. I was apologized for the location, but I was told
- 1:03it was the only place available. I was grateful for the hospitality and started
- 1:08settling in. As the afternoon fell and I finished accommodating my belongings. I
- 1:15noticed something unusual. From the window of my cabin. I could see a
- 1:19deer in the distance. He seemed to stare at me as if he knew
- 1:25a chill was there. He walked through my spine as he remembered the dream
- 1:29of the night before. I decided not to pay much attention and continued unpacking.
- 1:34The next day I started with my work, caring for the patients who
- 1:38came to my office. The inhabitants of the village were kind and grateful,
- 1:44which made me feel that I had made the right decision by accepting that job.
- 1:49However, the image of the deer was still hovering in my mind as
- 1:53a disquieting shadow. That night, as I was preparing to lie down or
- 2:00I took a look outside the window and, to my horror, the Deer
- 2:02had returned in the same place looking at me, but this time his eyes
- 2:08seemed to shine with a strange intensity. I closed the curtains all of a
- 2:13sudden feeling a fear I couldn' t explain. The disturbing presence of the
- 2:17deer continued to stalk me. In the following nights, his constant gaze fixed
- 2:23from a distance began to torment me. Although I tried to convince myself that
- 2:28it was just a coincidence, I could not help but feel that it had
- 2:34a deeper meaning as if it were an omen of something sinister. The following
- 2:38nights were even worse. The Deer always went back to the same place,
- 2:43not always at the same time, but without fail every day was there.
- 2:46Every time I looked out the window, it was closer. His presence became
- 2:51disturbing and the feeling that he was constantly watching me tormented me. I began
- 2:57to ask the locals about the Deer, but no one seemed willing to talk
- 3:01about it. My questions were received with evasive glances and silence. Uncomfortable.
- 3:07I started to feel like something wasn' t right in this place. That
- 3:12' s when the nightmares started on them. The Deer was getting closer and
- 3:16closer until I could feel his cold breath on my face. He woke up
- 3:22sweating and scared unable to discern between reality and sleep. One night, while
- 3:29I was in the middle of one of my nightmares, I could see how
- 3:32the deer stood at the foot of my bed. Looking at me with his
- 3:37eyes empty, I screamed and woke up suddenly, but when I looked down,
- 3:42there was the deer now in my room, just a few meters away,
- 3:46and I thought it was a dream, but the cold wind coming in
- 3:51through the open door, let me know it was real. Paralysed by fear,
- 3:54I could not move and the deer slowly advanced towards me. His labess
- 3:59fingernails resounded on the floor. When he was inches from me, his head
- 4:04bowed to one side inhumanely and I could see something like a smile on his
- 4:09face. Then in an instant he ran off and disappeared into darkness. After
- 4:15the deer disappeared in the dark, I lay in my bed trying to recover
- 4:20my breath and calm the frantic heartbeat of my heart. Although the experience had
- 4:28been terrifying, I tried to convince myself that it had only been a vivid
- 4:31and disturbing dream. Little by little, fear dissipated and my mind began to
- 4:36find rational explanations for what had happened. I thought maybe I left the door
- 4:44to my cabin open. I could remember the feeling of tiredness that overwhelmed me
- 4:48as I settled in, and that fatigue could have led me to do an
- 4:54oversight. The villagers had assured me that I did not need to lock it,
- 5:00as it was a safe and quiet place, but I used to put
- 5:03some things at the door so that, in case someone tried to open it,
- 5:08they would fall down and alert me. As I reflected on this possibility,
- 5:14the idea that the deer had entered my cabin began to appear more and
- 5:17more absurd. I was sure I had locked the door, though it lacked
- 5:23lock. I had done everything I could to make sure it was closed,
- 5:28but the doubts persisted. I remembered that my cabin window was also open at
- 5:33the time. That was an exception in the village, since most of the
- 5:39houses had no open windows and the inhabitants had explained to me that it was
- 5:44to keep the heat out and insects away. But now, as I reflected
- 5:49on what had happened, I realized that the things I used to put on
- 5:54the door had not fallen to the ground. That didn' t make sense.
- 6:00If the door had been opened by the wind or for some other reason,
- 6:03things should have fallen off alert immediately. While my mind worked in search
- 6:10of answers, an idea began to take shape. The only way those things
- 6:15wouldn' t have fallen would be if someone or something had held them from
- 6:19the outside before opening the door. But that was impossible. True, the
- 6:25deer I had seen would not only have to stand, but would also have
- 6:30to have hands to perform such a task. The idea was absurd and terrifying
- 6:34in equal parts. I decided that there had to be a logical explanation for
- 6:41all this and that my tired mind, had exaggerated the situation. I reminded
- 6:45myself that I needed to rest to be in full power for my work the
- 6:49next day. After all, I had come here to practice medicine and help
- 6:55the community, not to let myself be tormented by nightmares and delusions. I
- 7:01closed my eyes and slowly got carried away by the tiredness of my mind.
- 7:05Finally, he plunged into the darkness of the night, hoping that the new
- 7:10day would bring answers and calm to me troubled mind the next day. While
- 7:16I was doing my usual consultations, I met a man named and cal was,
- 7:21a middle- aged man who owned the only shop in town and cal
- 7:27and I had made a good friendship since my arrival in town, as we
- 7:31were of similar ages and shared many pleasant conversations and cove had come to see
- 7:39me for a headache that afflicted him, but my look, tired and worried,
- 7:43caught his attention. He asked me if everything was all right. That
- 7:46' s when I decided to tell you about my strange deer experience. As
- 7:50I told him the story, I could see that the expression on his face
- 7:56went from worry to surprise and finally you were ready to understand. When I
- 8:01finished my story, he looked at me seriously and assured me that what I
- 8:07was experiencing was not something new in that town. His words puzzled me,
- 8:11as until that moment I had considered the possibility that the deer was an isolated
- 8:16phenomenon or even a creation of my disturbed mind and lime continued explaining that throughout
- 8:22his life in the village he had heard stories about men who, under the
- 8:26influence of strange circumstances, took the form of animals during the night. According
- 8:33to local legends, these individuals were known as Nahuales beings with supernatural abilities that
- 8:41could adopt the appearance of animals. My skepticism seized me immediately and I mocked
- 8:46the idea that the deer that harassed me could be a supernatural entity and lime
- 8:50was not offended by my laughter. However, he said something that made me
- 8:56stop laughing, and this was that I was sure that the deer was not
- 9:01a gual told me that he had already seen it a couple of times and
- 9:05I was sure that it was something more evil. And Cal did not provide
- 9:11any further details about his encounter with the Deer and I could see that the
- 9:16subject seemed to affect him deeply. Despite my initial skepticism, his confidence in
- 9:20what I had seen made me reconsider my prejudices. I decided to put aside
- 9:26my doubts and mockery and proposed here the idea of hunting the Deer together.
- 9:31I thought it would be a way to face not only my own problem,
- 9:35but also that of my friend, and Cal seemed surprised by my proposal,
- 9:41but finally he accepted with a look of determination in his eyes. Together we
- 9:46began to plan our home to the mysterious Deer who was stalking the village nights
- 9:52knew that this house would not be like any other. The Deer was an
- 9:56enigma that challenged logic and reason and we were about to embark on a path
- 10:01that would lead us to the unknown. While we were plotting our plans.
- 10:07I couldn' t help but wonder if we' d ever find answers or
- 10:13if we' d get even deeper into the mysterious shadows that seemed to envelop
- 10:16that remote. People with the determination to hunt the mysterious deer and lime and
- 10:22I began to prepare for the adventure. We begin by investigating the customs and
- 10:28patterns of behavior of common deer in the region in an attempt to predict the
- 10:33movement of the enigmatic nocturnal visitor. We also consulted the inhabitants of the village
- 10:39to gather any information that might shed light on the Deer and its presence.
- 10:46The weeks passed and our quest became an obsession. We went out at night
- 10:52with flashlights and our hunting weapons. However, the Deer seemed elusive and cunning
- 10:56always just beyond our reach. We felt like we were trapped in an endless
- 11:03nightmare. Nightmares also continued Every time I closed my eyes. I was in
- 11:09the middle of a dark forest, chasing the deer away in the distance.
- 11:15His empty eyes and his unsettling smile were now part of my daily life,
- 11:20stalking me both in the vine and in the dream. One night we both
- 11:26decided we' d go out looking for him and we wouldn' t come
- 11:30back until he was dead. We found ourselves near my cabin ready for our
- 11:33night hunt and cal was carrying the rifles and we were both nervous about what
- 11:39we were about to face to lighten the atmosphere. Tenso I made some jokes
- 11:45about how that night we' d have a juicy deer. I also mentioned
- 11:50that my father used to hunt me as a child, which gave me some
- 11:54experience and skill with aim. Apparently, my words accomplished their task and I
- 12:01saw a glimmer of smile on the face of ical before we set out on
- 12:05our way to the forest. The night was dark, only illuminated by the
- 12:09dim moonlight. I wasn' t sure how long it had been, but
- 12:15it looked like we' d walked for hours. Our steps were sinking into
- 12:18the wet, crispy soil of dry leaves and the sound of the night was
- 12:22unusually silent. There was not the nocturnal bustle of insects or animals, only
- 12:30a disturbing silence that seemed to hug us at a time and lime made me
- 12:35notice how strange the situation was right. The silence around us was puzzling.
- 12:41We' re both moving more stealthily. Our ears were attentive to any sound
- 12:46that could rat out the deer. The atmosphere became increasingly oppressive as we moved
- 12:52forward in the midst of weeds and jokes and conversation had been left behind thin
- 12:56i s NS. As we moved forward cautiously, I saw something move between
- 13:03the trees a few meters away, I pointed urgently to ical and we both
- 13:09stood still, looking to the point where I had seen the movement. The
- 13:13deer was there majestic and serene. His eyes shone with an unfathomable mystery in
- 13:18the dark and lime took his rifle and prepared to fire, But before he
- 13:24could do so, an unknown rumble broke the silence of the night. The
- 13:30deer, frightened by the noise, ran in the opposite direction. We didn
- 13:35' t think about what had caused that rumble only drove us to follow the
- 13:39deer in a hurry and dig deeper into the thick forest. The weeds became
- 13:45denser and denser and the sound of our steps resounded in our ears. As
- 13:50we chased the deer. It seemed that we were never going to reach it,
- 13:56but we continued with determination. However, at one point the deer came
- 13:58out of our visual field as if it had vanished into the air. We
- 14:05were disoriented and frightened trying to understand what we had just witnessed. We stopped
- 14:11dry looking around, but there was no trace of the deer. We had
- 14:18completely lost its trail in the middle of the darkness of the forest. We
- 14:22felt discouraged and confused, wondering if we would ever find answers to this riddle
- 14:30or if the deer would remain a mystery that would fade away like a dream.
- 14:33As the night woke up, his reign of silence continued and our search
- 14:39seemed to have reached a standstill. We both knew we should return to the
- 14:45village, but our minds were full of unanswered questions and the feeling that we
- 14:50had witnessed something beyond our understanding persisted in us. As we walked, I
- 14:58listened to the steps of icalde behind me, although I was not very sure
- 15:01where we were, as we had left the usual path following the deer.
- 15:07I still had confidence in my good sense of direction, so I wasn'
- 15:11t so worried. That' s why, however, suddenly a drowning scream
- 15:16made me stop dry. I turned around quickly just to realize that Gal was
- 15:22no longer behind me. I got scared. I was sure Ikal was in
- 15:26trouble I yelled his name a couple of times, but I didn' t
- 15:33get any answers, and the concern took over me. I stayed there alone
- 15:37in the middle of the dark forest with no trace of ical. I knew
- 15:41I couldn' t leave him, so I started going back the way we
- 15:46had gone. But as I advanced, I realized that the shadows of the
- 15:50forest seemed to move and the sounds of the night became more disturbing. I
- 15:56couldn' t help but feel something lurking in the dark. My steps became
- 16:00faster and erratic as I kept looking for icaal, but the forest seemed to
- 16:04conspire against me. The trees seemed to close around me and the whispers of
- 16:10the wind turned into murmurs that I could not understand. I felt like I
- 16:15was trapped in a nightmare world. I kept shouting his name, but I
- 16:22only got the echo of the forest' s silence as an answer. My
- 16:25heart was pounding as I looked around for some indication of his whereabouts. The
- 16:32darkness of the forest was closing around me and I felt like I was getting
- 16:36lost in the middle of the weeds. That' s when I saw him
- 16:41the deer was standing just a few meters away, seemingly quiet and showing no
- 16:45signs of aggression. However, something in her eyes and in her presence made
- 16:51me feel a chill in my spinal cord and a stir in my stomach.
- 16:55I didn' t even think about shooting. I could only scream from the
- 17:00name of icaal waiting for him to respond, but I didn' t get
- 17:06any answers from my friend. The anguish flooded me when I realized that I
- 17:08was alone in the darkness of the forest and tears sprang from my eyes.
- 17:15I tried to run, but my legs seemed not to answer me as if
- 17:21they were anchored on the ground. Then the sounds started. They were like
- 17:26cries of help, heartbreaking and desperate from all directions of the forest. They
- 17:32seemed to be Icaal' s voice asking for help, my mind was clouded
- 17:36with panic and as the screams resounded around me, I began to retreat.
- 17:41My legs didn' t allow me to go much further and I stopped in
- 17:45the middle of the quiet, dark forest, trying to clear my thoughts and
- 17:52find a way out of this nightmare. The darkness was suffocating and the weed
- 17:55wrapped me like cold, wet arms. Suddenly they fell and as my back
- 18:00clashed with something lukewarm and hairy. I turned in horror and found myself face
- 18:04to face with the deer. He stood upright like a human and stared at
- 18:08me his eyes had an unusual and evil glow and a perverse smile was hinted
- 18:14at in his face. But what horrified me even more was when the deer
- 18:19raised his arms by revealing human hands instead of hooves. He scoffed at his
- 18:25fingers like he was laughing at me. A scream escaped my lips and I
- 18:30ran out as fast as my legs allowed me to. As I ran desperate
- 18:37through the forest, the screams of ical resounded in my ears. My mind
- 18:41was going crazy and I didn' t know if what I had seen was
- 18:45real or a manifestation of my fear. The deer with his human hands was
- 18:49an image that would haunt me forever. As the forest progressed, it became
- 18:56darker and more confused, and I soon realized that I was losing. The
- 19:00trees seemed to twist and move around me as if the forest itself mocked my
- 19:06anguish. I didn' t know where to go and fear hugged me tightly.
- 19:11Finally I came to a clearing in the forest I staggered exhausted and looked
- 19:15around for any sign of orientation. But what I saw in the clearing iced
- 19:21my blood and lime I was lying there on the ground, unconscious and wounded.
- 19:27His face was pale and his clothes torn. I ran to him fearing
- 19:32the worst, but found he was still alive. It was difficult, but
- 19:37I managed to get out of the forest along with ical almost at dawn with
- 19:42my heart still beating hard and tears dry on my cheeks. I swore at
- 19:47that very moment that I would leave and never return to that mysterious village,
- 19:52but the memory of that deer with human hands remained in my mind forever,
- 19:56a nightmare that would torment me every time I was closed my eyes and plunged
- 20:00into the darkness of the night. Anonymous account
