- 1:59SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 2:00SPEAKER_02: It's uh just just going back into our covert holes and working out when we can.
- 2:07SPEAKER_03: But you've had you've had you've done stuff in the meantime.
- 2:10SPEAKER_03: We've both we've both kind of done stuff.
- 2:11SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we're real busy guys.
- 2:12SPEAKER_02: We've got lots of stuff going on.
- 2:14SPEAKER_02: Like just trying to keep busy at home, I guess.
- 2:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, totally.
- 2:18SPEAKER_02: Uh you know, I've I'm getting really into the PlayStation 4.
- 2:23SPEAKER_02: It's a great thing.
- 2:23SPEAKER_02: You've got to cheating as game.
- 2:24SPEAKER_03: PlayStation 4, not even PlayStation.
- 2:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I'm just catching up.
- 2:28SPEAKER_02: Been working my way up.
- 2:29SPEAKER_03: What you played at the moment?
- 2:30SPEAKER_03: What are you playing at the moment?
- 2:31SPEAKER_02: Um A Spider-Man.
- 2:33SPEAKER_03: Oh, I just started playing that recently.
- 2:35SPEAKER_03: The Marjorie one.
- 2:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's great.
- 2:37SPEAKER_02: It was really fun, yeah.
- 2:39SPEAKER_02: It's just just swinging around, helping people out.
- 2:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I don't even want to do like the proper missions, I just want to like it's just nice being in a city where there isn't like a pandemic.
- 2:49SPEAKER_02: You just wander around like, oh, everyone's just hanging out.
- 2:52SPEAKER_02: No masks.
- 2:53SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's right.
- 2:55SPEAKER_03: Except for Spider-Man's.
- 2:57SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah, yeah, of course.
- 2:58SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 2:58SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 2:59SPEAKER_03: Um but other than that, you're just like just relaxing at the moment, I guess.
- 3:04SPEAKER_03: Yeah, well, it's just been Christmas and New Year's, so.
- 3:07SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 3:07SPEAKER_02: I'm still I'm very I'm from New Zealand, so I'm on a very like for me, New Year's is the start of a very long holiday in summer.
- 3:14SPEAKER_02: So I really struggle to um to to get rid of that feeling over here when I know I should be getting back to work, but I just had the beach.
- 3:23SPEAKER_02: How long do they have off in New Zealand then?
- 3:24SPEAKER_02: Over that time.
- 3:26SPEAKER_02: You usually sort of reconvene in like February.
- 3:29SPEAKER_02: I mean, I've never had a real job, so I have to take it.
- 3:33SPEAKER_02: I just think.
- 3:33SPEAKER_03: I was gonna say you don't really work to a normal schedule anyway, do you?
- 3:37SPEAKER_03: No, no, absolutely not.
- 3:38SPEAKER_02: But I but I I don't work I don't work, you know, normal hours, but I also take a lot of time off in January.
- 3:46SPEAKER_02: Uh even though I haven't earned it.
- 3:49SPEAKER_03: Well, I mean you kind of have.
- 3:51SPEAKER_03: You just had a a show at the Soho Theatre, so that's something.
- 3:55SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah, it was three nights of work, so I am I'm in for a very long break now.
- 4:00SPEAKER_03: It's three nights of well, it's three nights of performing, but you still gotta like work in the meet leading lead up to that.
- 4:06SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I suppose.
- 4:07SPEAKER_03: I suppose all up, maybe it's like a week's work.
- 4:10SPEAKER_02: I'm just downplaying it massively.
- 4:13SPEAKER_03: You were just saying how much tech you had in everything.
- 4:16SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah, yeah.
- 4:17SPEAKER_02: I had upwards of like 40 sound cues.
- 4:19SPEAKER_02: So yeah, you gotta you gotta write those.
- 4:21SPEAKER_02: 40 sound cues.
- 4:22SPEAKER_03: Okay, that's actually quite a lot.
- 4:24SPEAKER_03: I think it was maybe more than that.
- 4:26SPEAKER_03: It was quite a lot, yeah, it's got quite a lot.
- 4:27SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's yeah, that's a decent amount.
- 4:29SPEAKER_03: I've never done 40 sound cues for any of the shows I've done.
- 4:33SPEAKER_03: Oh, you haven't lived.
- 4:36SPEAKER_02: It's like a movie, really.
- 4:37SPEAKER_02: You know, it's like once you put those sound cues in, you're transported.
- 4:41SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 4:45SPEAKER_03: Um so today you have come on to talk about the movie Jupiter Ascending, which you were like very excited to talk about.
- 4:54SPEAKER_03: Because Yeah.
- 4:56SPEAKER_03: Do you like what's your what's your history with this movie then?
- 5:00SPEAKER_03: Um well you have a history with it, really.
- 5:04SPEAKER_02: I I went see this movie, I think the week it came out, uh uh in a in a very sort of like comedian fashion.
- 5:12SPEAKER_02: I was doing it for a podcast that I used to, a movie podcast.
- 5:16SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 5:17SPEAKER_02: And uh we would go and see the sort of the movie that we thought looked the worst in cinemas.
- 5:23SPEAKER_03: Oh, so you were aware it looked bad.
- 5:25SPEAKER_02: I thought it looked insane.
- 5:28SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 5:29SPEAKER_02: I was excited about it.
- 5:30SPEAKER_02: Um we would always try and, you know, find find positive things to say.
- 5:34SPEAKER_02: And and uh that was I just I just remember thinking, wow, this movie is really going for it.
- 5:42SPEAKER_02: And every every every element of the movie is just pushing hard.
- 5:46SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 5:47SPEAKER_02: Um and it's wild.
- 5:48SPEAKER_02: And then uh I honestly have not thought about it.
- 5:51SPEAKER_02: So that was 2015, and it's been six odd years.
- 5:56SPEAKER_02: And when I had a look at the list of the movies that are under 40% of Rotten Tomatoes, it was the one I saw.
- 6:01SPEAKER_02: I was like, how is that under 40%?
- 6:03SPEAKER_02: It's great.
- 6:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it well, it's it's quite a bit under 40%.
- 6:06SPEAKER_03: It's 20 28 and uh 28 on the critics and 38 from the audience, which is still like it's 38 from an audience score.
- 6:16SPEAKER_03: Beloved neither by critics nor by fans.
- 6:19SPEAKER_03: Like an audience score of 38 is really bad from what I've like from what I've discovered over time.
- 6:25SPEAKER_03: So even oh man, I think people are wrong about that.
- 6:28SPEAKER_02: It's it's just such a I the only thing I could remember about it was um that Channing Tatum has like hover hover boots and he rollerblades everywhere, and then that I remember that Sean Bean was a B.
- 6:42SPEAKER_02: And those two things I was like, that's in my mind that makes a great movie.
- 6:46SPEAKER_02: And then watching it back today, I was I was I was loving.
- 6:49SPEAKER_02: I had a great time.
- 6:50SPEAKER_02: Oh, you watched it again today?
- 6:52SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah.
- 6:52SPEAKER_03: Oh did you when did you watch it?
- 6:54SPEAKER_03: I watched it yesterday, but yeah, like I was gonna watch it, I was gonna watch it a few days ago, but like, yeah, I let it sink in.
- 7:02SPEAKER_03: I was like, let me let me just I was putting it off, basically.
- 7:07SPEAKER_03: I also thought it was gonna be longer than it was.
- 7:09SPEAKER_03: I for some reason I was like, oh, this is gonna be like three hours long.
- 7:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and I think that's because movies are just unnecessarily long now.
- 7:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 7:16SPEAKER_02: And even in that five-year gap, yeah, you know, it's two and a half it's two hours fifth twelve or something.
- 7:23SPEAKER_03: No, it's like two hours on the two hours.
- 7:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah, okay.
- 7:27SPEAKER_02: But now, if you were to make it now, it would be three hours.
- 7:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 7:31SPEAKER_03: Which is mad to me.
- 7:33SPEAKER_03: I think I just assume the Wachowski's make like really long movies as well.
- 7:38SPEAKER_03: Yeah, they just peg it so much in.
- 7:40SPEAKER_02: They just peg it in.
- 7:42SPEAKER_03: Well, are you able to give a synopsis of this movie, like a brief synopsis of what this movie's about?
- 7:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah, sure.
- 7:52SPEAKER_02: If you can.
- 7:54SPEAKER_02: Oh man, I actually I don't know.
- 7:56SPEAKER_02: I mean, as I was watching it, I I was I was like, I understand this.
- 8:00SPEAKER_02: And then as it got more and more into like the stocks, um, I was just like, oh man, I was you know, I'm not a businessman.
- 8:07SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 8:08SPEAKER_02: But I so it the movie is is basic it's like about um space stocks and like a family, it's like it's a bit like succession in that it's about trying to trying to be the head of this this company.
- 8:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 8:26SPEAKER_02: Um but the product, instead of being, you know, a global media company, is an international an interstellar human um face cream company.
- 8:40SPEAKER_02: A company that makes face cream out of humans.
- 8:43SPEAKER_02: Um that people use that you call it live longer.
- 8:50SPEAKER_03: Or like it's an Epsom salt bath.
- 8:52SPEAKER_03: Or I don't know, how would you say that you just go they go into a bath and then come out and they're like, And your skin is glowing.
- 8:59SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you crack it.
- 9:00SPEAKER_02: It's like retinol, but like times a million, and it's the b the biggest commodity in all of the universe.
- 9:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 9:10SPEAKER_02: And uh then there's also and then Melacunas is um uh their reincarnated mother, and they're all trying to kill her so that she doesn't take over the business again.
- 9:23SPEAKER_02: And if that doesn't sound like a fantastic space movie, then it's what does I just it's clearly built to be like a new Star Wars as well.
- 9:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 9:39SPEAKER_02: They had so many ideas for where to go next, and they they never got to.
- 9:46SPEAKER_03: Well like I guess we should talk about like how Channing first of all, Channing's Tatum is is hired to kidnap Mina Kunis.
- 9:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah, do we want do we want to disguise describe the plot as as speci as well we'll with as much information as possible?
- 10:04SPEAKER_02: Is that the go is that the goal?
- 10:05SPEAKER_02: Like to make people understand what's happening.
- 10:06SPEAKER_03: I mean, like before we like properly get dive into it, I feel like we should like make pre make the characters clear at least.
- 10:12SPEAKER_03: Yeah, great.
- 10:15SPEAKER_03: So there's like Channing T well Mina Cunis is is essentially the lead character, it's Jupiter.
- 10:21SPEAKER_03: Uh her name is Jupiter.
- 10:23SPEAKER_03: She's live she lives on Earth, she's not aware that she's the reincarnation.
- 10:28SPEAKER_03: No basically.
- 10:30SPEAKER_02: No, no.
- 10:30SPEAKER_02: I mean, spoilers, but she she's just she she cleans toilets and she hates her life.
- 10:35SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 10:36SPEAKER_02: She's a Russian immigrant living in Chicago.
- 10:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 10:40SPEAKER_02: And she is her life sucks as far as she's good.
- 10:45SPEAKER_02: It really does suck because her cousin is trying to get her to sell her eggs.
- 10:51SPEAKER_02: She's on Google Buy as well.
- 10:53SPEAKER_02: She wants to buy a TV and a PlayStation, actually.
- 10:55SPEAKER_02: He wants to buy a PlayStation, which you know, I get it.
- 10:57SPEAKER_03: I've been playing PlayStation.
- 10:58SPEAKER_03: Those things are great.
- 11:00SPEAKER_03: She she wants to buy a telescope as well, which is like a callback to uh the very beginning of the movie where she's um her parents, her dad's like a like an an astrophysicist or something.
- 11:12SPEAKER_03: Like, I don't know.
- 11:13SPEAKER_02: Yeah, or is he just an amateur astrologer?
- 11:15SPEAKER_02: Like he has a telescope.
- 11:17SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 11:19SPEAKER_02: Maybe you're right.
- 11:20SPEAKER_02: Maybe you're right.
- 11:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 11:23SPEAKER_02: And he loves he loves Jupiter.
- 11:25SPEAKER_02: He loves a planet.
- 11:26SPEAKER_02: And then he does.
- 11:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 11:31SPEAKER_02: And then then he gets shot by a gang member or a yeah, a gang just break in and like shoot him.
- 11:40SPEAKER_02: Uh because he doesn't know.
- 11:41SPEAKER_02: It's just a robbery, eh?
- 11:42SPEAKER_02: It's not like he's he's uh not part of some.
- 11:45SPEAKER_03: Yeah, there's like no real reason for yeah.
- 11:48SPEAKER_03: See, it feels like it should have been stuck, like it feels like it was supposed to be something, but they just like kind of left it out.
- 11:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it feels like it's a um it's like a Batman origin story, but instead she just goes on to become a cleaner.
- 12:02SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 12:03SPEAKER_03: And so she's trying to sell basically, she's trying to sell her eggs to buy television.
- 12:10SPEAKER_03: She's trying to sell her eggs.
- 12:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 12:12SPEAKER_02: Imagine if that's the way they pitch this one.
- 12:14SPEAKER_02: Like she's just a young girl, all she wants to do is sell her eggs to buy a telescope, and from there.
- 12:19SPEAKER_02: But what she doesn't know is the alien that the doctors are aliens, and they're trying to find out if she's the genetically reincarnated uh re rebirth of the mother of an intergalactic space base cream business.
- 12:37SPEAKER_02: And Vanessa Kirby's in it very briefly.
- 12:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah, for like one one scene, I want to say.
- 12:43SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 12:44SPEAKER_02: You wouldn't be able to get her for that scene now.
- 12:46SPEAKER_02: No.
- 12:47SPEAKER_02: Um and then Channing Tatum is a dog man, yeah.
- 12:52SPEAKER_02: Who is um hired by one of the family members to protect her or kill her?
- 13:00SPEAKER_02: To no, he's protect her.
- 13:02SPEAKER_03: Protect her, but like still kidnap her.
- 13:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 13:09SPEAKER_02: And he's a dog man with space boot, with sky boots.
- 13:14SPEAKER_02: And he used to have he used to have wings, but they got cut off because he was in the military, the space military, and uh he went crazy and bit someone's throat to death, and so they cut off his wings, and now he's just a regular dog man with space boots.
- 13:31SPEAKER_03: And I didn't realize this at the time, but I was just reading the trivia beforehand, and apparently he's wearing prosthetic, like a prosthetic mouth guard that made it so he couldn't speak.
- 13:41SPEAKER_02: Yes, I saw that.
- 13:42SPEAKER_02: I saw that on the Amazon Prime um trivia as well.
- 13:47SPEAKER_02: It's such a funny bit of trivia to include.
- 13:49SPEAKER_02: Like, Shannon Tatum had to wear a mouth guard, and because of that, he can't talk properly.
- 13:55SPEAKER_02: Which is a it's a great character choice.
- 13:57SPEAKER_02: I mean he doesn't say a whole lot in the movie, but like And do you know what?
- 14:03SPEAKER_02: I I could I swear to God, when he shoots his guns, the guns make a barking sound.
- 14:08SPEAKER_03: They do.
- 14:08SPEAKER_03: And I didn't notice.
- 14:09SPEAKER_03: Did you pick up on that?
- 14:10SPEAKER_03: No, I didn't notice that, but I really shoots his laser guns and goes.
- 14:16SPEAKER_03: I I completely missed that, but in the trivia I was reading it says that it does that.
- 14:20SPEAKER_03: And I don't know how I know.
- 14:21SPEAKER_03: Is it in the trivia?
- 14:21SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 14:21SPEAKER_02: I don't know how I just Oh my god, because I thought I was just like going insane.
- 14:25SPEAKER_02: Between in like one of the last battles, I was like, his dogs it's like that guns are barking.
- 14:30SPEAKER_02: His dogs are barking.
- 14:31SPEAKER_02: Yeah, his dogs are barking.
- 14:33SPEAKER_02: His dogs are his feet uh barking.
- 14:35SPEAKER_02: Um that is fantastic.
- 14:37SPEAKER_02: Well, fantastic.
- 14:39SPEAKER_02: I love that.
- 14:39SPEAKER_02: I mean, this movie is so um it sounds inc crazy, obviously, the way we're describing it.
- 14:46SPEAKER_02: And it is It is crazy, but what I love about it, and I was thinking about this, if you made this now, it would be so like if you compare it to like the Marvel movies and stuff, like I just went to see Spider-Man No Way Home, and I enjoyed it.
- 15:00SPEAKER_02: It's fun.
- 15:01SPEAKER_02: But I what I can't stand anymore is like people cracking jokes every I hate in every scene.
- 15:09SPEAKER_02: Just crack just quipp quip quip.
- 15:11SPEAKER_02: And and and what there's no there's no jokes in this movie, really.
- 15:16SPEAKER_02: Like there's one moment where he where where they're talking and Mila Kunis goes, he's like, Yeah, I used to be part of the space police, and she's like, space cops, really?
- 15:25SPEAKER_02: And like that's the only time she like sort of like you know, looks at her surrounding and makes a quip.
- 15:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's not even a uh but you know, it's she's just met a dog man with space boots, and it's weird that she's like weirded up by space cops.
- 15:37SPEAKER_02: But because everyone does it so earnestly, the whole movie is so heartfelt, yeah, and so and everyone just commits.
- 15:44SPEAKER_02: I like you know, it you you just go you go there with them.
- 15:47SPEAKER_02: I love it.
- 15:48SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's great.
- 15:49SPEAKER_03: I I was reading this as well, and there's something called the Jupiter, I don't know if it's a proper thing, but it's called the Jupiter Ascending Stigma, and it's when uh cinematic event where the audience desperately asks for innovative or simply more creative and bolder movies under the statement that the Hoddingwood is running out of ideas, but when they come out, they are bashed by critics and audiences.
- 16:11SPEAKER_03: Yes, this is for actually trying to be different.
- 16:15SPEAKER_02: Totally.
- 16:16SPEAKER_02: This is like it's such an innovative like every part of this movie is like, ah, you've never seen we've never done this, and you know, a lot of it arguably, and you know, uh I think unanimously doesn't work, but like it's great that they're trying, it's awesome.
- 16:34SPEAKER_02: There's a long extended sequence in the middle where they like get they they they spend about 10 minutes trying to get some forms signed.
- 16:43SPEAKER_02: And it and it would have taken, I'm gonna say, a month, two months maybe of shooting.
- 16:49SPEAKER_02: Like the it's just them standing in different lines in different planets, like talking to aliens, trying to get some different forms like stamped and signed.
- 16:58SPEAKER_02: And like the the production design is off the charts in those scenes.
- 17:02SPEAKER_03: Yeah, there's like a got a robot that's like leaning around, but he's got like a mart, like a human face, but like they're just like detached from like the the body.
- 17:11SPEAKER_02: There's like yeah, there's like a thousand digital effects in every shot, and there's like 20 of these scenes with extras and and like little things buzzing around, and all these people being like, no, sorry, you can't get that stamped here, you gotta go down the hole.
- 17:26SPEAKER_02: And like it adds nothing to the movie, like it is no longer.
- 17:32SPEAKER_02: Not needed, it's so funny.
- 17:34SPEAKER_02: It reminded me heaps of uh Fifth Element.
- 17:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that bit.
- 17:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's very fantastic.
- 17:39SPEAKER_02: And actually, a bit of Eddie Redmane's performance is kind of like Gary Oldman and Oh, Eddie Redmane in this movie.
- 17:46SPEAKER_03: Oh my god.
- 17:47SPEAKER_03: The highlight of the movie.
- 17:51SPEAKER_02: His performance is i you have to see it.
- 17:55SPEAKER_02: You have to see his performance.
- 17:56SPEAKER_02: It's fantastic.
- 17:57SPEAKER_02: It's one of the weirdest character choices I've ever seen in my life.
- 18:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 18:02SPEAKER_02: It's so strange.
- 18:04SPEAKER_02: He's just got this very soft, soft voice, and then occasionally he goes, and like he's always like about to cry.
- 18:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 18:12SPEAKER_02: Um and he's just he's really doing so you could you can tell that he he thinks he's doing something, and yeah, I think everyone on set were just like this.
- 18:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 18:23SPEAKER_02: I wonder if everyone on set was like, God, this guy is this is amazing what he's doing.
- 18:28SPEAKER_02: Like this is they have to have known.
- 18:31SPEAKER_02: They have to have been like, this is batshit.
- 18:35SPEAKER_02: Have you seen that that ad?
- 18:36SPEAKER_02: It's like an ad for maybe it's for MasterCard or something.
- 18:39SPEAKER_02: And Eddie Redmain's in it.
- 18:41SPEAKER_02: And it's like it's him talking about his acting process.
- 18:45SPEAKER_02: It's if you're check, check out it's so funny.
- 18:49SPEAKER_02: Because it's like him, it's like him in a cafe, and he's like, acting comes from just seeing a moment, and he like looks out the window, and there's like a guy um letting someone pass on the street and doing a sort of gentlemanly like bow.
- 19:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 19:03SPEAKER_02: And then he sort of like clocks that, and you see him in this warehouse later, like practicing the bow for his like character, and then it like has a shot of him with like all these different hats on a table, like four like 20 different types of like fedoras, and he's like trying them on and like doing the bow and like taking little bits from um people's lives, and then the last shot is him like walking out onto the stage, doing the bow with his like fedora, and like this round of applause from the audience.
- 19:27SPEAKER_02: It's amazing.
- 19:29SPEAKER_02: And I just sorry, I just really imagined him imagine him getting like those little tidbits for his character in this, like the soft voice and and like the the like childlike screams and stuff, and just be like, yeah, this is great.
- 19:42SPEAKER_02: I'm creating a character for a villain for the ages.
- 19:47SPEAKER_03: I mean, like, yeah, it's it's so crazy.
- 19:52SPEAKER_03: This movie, this this he is the highlight of the movie by far.
- 19:57SPEAKER_03: And I the thing is as well, though, like they well, we'll get into it later about him, but like there's stuff about him that we can't talk about at the moment until we get to the end.
- 20:10SPEAKER_03: But yeah.
- 20:11SPEAKER_03: Um, but basically, like I was I was thinking about how this is a year before he won an Oscar as well.
- 20:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I wonder if if he if going into um what was it, what was the film that he went Oscar for?
- 20:31SPEAKER_02: The uh the Danish girl.
- 20:32SPEAKER_02: The Danish girl, yeah.
- 20:35SPEAKER_02: I wonder if he had trouble like letting go of this character when he went into the Danish girl.
- 20:40SPEAKER_02: You're doing a bit of that space guy.
- 20:42SPEAKER_02: Oh, sorry.
- 20:44SPEAKER_02: Sorry, I'll just uh come back down to Earth.
- 20:53SPEAKER_01: So great.
- 20:54SPEAKER_03: Even his look in this is weird as well.
- 20:56SPEAKER_03: Like he he wears like a vest with like nothing else, like a shirt.
- 21:00SPEAKER_03: He's got I love him!
- 21:02SPEAKER_02: I love the way he refers to all these like he's got all these like lizards that like serve these like dragon lizards that are like his minions, and he always calls them mister, like like Mr.
- 21:13SPEAKER_02: like Mr.
- 21:14SPEAKER_02: Mr.
- 21:15SPEAKER_02: Hines, would you do this for me?
- 21:17SPEAKER_02: And the the lizard's like of course right and just so funny that he's got like a he's like I'm gonna call you mister.
- 21:26SPEAKER_03: Well they do that they do that as well with um with Mila Kunis where they're like Your Majesty, your Majesty, your Majesty, and they all call her that just constantly.
- 21:35SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and it's just it feels really weird.
- 21:37SPEAKER_02: She um the first time when she gets called your majesty by Sean Bean because all the bees have are we still trying to still meant to be ta saying what the plot is?
- 21:47SPEAKER_02: I mean like uh 'cause I don't even know.
- 21:51SPEAKER_02: Cause she so when Channy Tatum turns up, people are trying to kill her for some reason.
- 21:56SPEAKER_02: She's like, I don't know.
- 21:57SPEAKER_02: I don't know why people are trying to kill me.
- 21:58SPEAKER_02: I'm nobody, I just clean toilets.
- 22:00SPEAKER_02: And then they go to hide at Sean Bean's house and there's bees all around his house and his house is like a giant beehive.
- 22:07SPEAKER_02: And um he he comes out and the bees are like all start swirling around her.
- 22:13SPEAKER_02: And then he he just sees that and he immediately gets on one knee and he goes, Your majesty.
- 22:18SPEAKER_02: And she's like, What are you talking about?
- 22:20SPEAKER_02: And he goes, Bees are genetically designed to recognize royalty.
- 22:25SPEAKER_01: He's got the best line.
- 22:26SPEAKER_01: She's a queen.
- 22:27SPEAKER_03: Yeah, she's a queen.
- 22:29SPEAKER_03: The bees, the bees don't.
- 22:31SPEAKER_03: He's got the best line as well.
- 22:33SPEAKER_03: He goes, Bees don't lie.
- 22:35SPEAKER_02: Bees, bees don't lie.
- 22:38SPEAKER_02: That is so true.
- 22:40SPEAKER_02: Bees.
- 22:43SPEAKER_01: That was originally Shakira's that was the song.
- 22:47SPEAKER_02: Um he also has the best line when he when he gets um shot with a gravity gun and he sees the guy and he goes beeswax just before he gets shot.
- 22:58SPEAKER_03: I missed that.
- 22:59SPEAKER_02: Little curse word to himself.
- 23:00SPEAKER_02: Oh, beeswax.
- 23:04SPEAKER_02: He's part B.
- 23:05SPEAKER_03: Sean Bean is part B for the listeners.
- 23:07SPEAKER_03: He's part B, but there's like no indication that he's B.
- 23:10SPEAKER_03: He's got nothing to make him look like a B.
- 23:13SPEAKER_02: He actually has a hexagonal pupil.
- 23:16SPEAKER_02: Oh.
- 23:17SPEAKER_02: If you look close enough, um like a like a honeycomb.
- 23:20SPEAKER_03: He's got a tattoo on the back of his neck, but like not a tattoo, but like a an imprint or something.
- 23:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think it's his bee, an alien.
- 23:27SPEAKER_02: Uh and he's surrounded surrounded by bees.
- 23:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 23:32SPEAKER_03: And his name is Stinger.
- 23:33SPEAKER_02: His name is Stinger.
- 23:34SPEAKER_03: His name is Stinger.
- 23:35SPEAKER_03: Mr.
- 23:35SPEAKER_03: Stinger.
- 23:36SPEAKER_03: The funniest thing is like when when she first gets there, it's like so many bees around.
- 23:41SPEAKER_03: She has like she doesn't question it at all.
- 23:43SPEAKER_03: She just accepts No.
- 23:45SPEAKER_02: She's very try like she she goes along with everything really quickly.
- 23:50SPEAKER_02: Like she's just like, oh okay.
- 23:52SPEAKER_02: Like when she meets Channing Tatum and he's like, I'm a I'm from space.
- 23:57SPEAKER_02: I'm a I'm a dog man.
- 23:59SPEAKER_02: She's like trust him immediately.
- 24:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 24:02SPEAKER_02: And then and then it's only when he says um uh Stinger used to be part of the space cops, she's like, Huh, space cops?
- 24:12SPEAKER_02: Or now you now okay, now I'm going too far.
- 24:16SPEAKER_02: This is too much.
- 24:18SPEAKER_03: Dog man.
- 24:19SPEAKER_02: But to be fair, she does live a life where her cousin is constantly trying to sell her eggs to buy to buy TVs.
- 24:26SPEAKER_02: So, you know, she's probably just excited to be out of the house.
- 24:29SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 24:32SPEAKER_03: Like, what other than other than that, what is there about her personality that you can tell me?
- 24:41SPEAKER_03: She um gosh.
- 24:44SPEAKER_02: Or any of them.
- 24:46SPEAKER_02: I think that's the thing.
- 24:47SPEAKER_02: That's the problem with this movie, is that they they haven't the like Chanel.
- 24:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 24:54SPEAKER_02: Apart from her being a a queen and him being a dog, they don't do anything to really develop like why they should be yeah, why there's like an attraction there, or like they're both very attractive.
- 25:07SPEAKER_02: But the love story is it does I don't know, it doesn't kind of hold up because they don't really ever because there's so they had to cut it to two hours, there's no time.
- 25:19SPEAKER_02: And thank god they did, because you know, I don't want to I don't want a movie to be longer than two hours.
- 25:24SPEAKER_02: Uh I don't care how good it is.
- 25:26SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I can't stand it.
- 25:30SPEAKER_03: There's a scene that I want to talk about though, which is the the chase sequence.
- 25:35SPEAKER_03: Uh when they first get uh when they first run away in Chicago as a chase sequence, and it's codename apparently it was codenamed 52 Part by the film's crew.
- 25:47SPEAKER_03: It was the longest sequence in the script, and it took six months of them being like they had to film it for six months.
- 25:57SPEAKER_03: Shani Tatum and Mila Koonis had to be on set every day for six months to film it, and I don't even like I vaguely remember the scene.
- 26:05SPEAKER_02: That seems crazy to me because yeah, so much of that chases like them in the sky.
- 26:10SPEAKER_02: So when they were on set, they must have just been on a in a blue screen, just like suspended from wires.
- 26:16SPEAKER_01: Six months.
- 26:18SPEAKER_02: I I take I take my hats off to people like those acting those scenes must be so hard to do like full green screen um like to and just like convince I have, and it's really really hard.
- 26:34SPEAKER_02: I mean I was I was I was in uh uh a season of Power Rangers in New Zealand.
- 26:39SPEAKER_02: That's what I was gonna say, you were in Power Rangers, so like Yeah, there was a bit well not like there was a lot of like looking up at like a big robot that was crushing the city.
- 26:50SPEAKER_02: Um and there was one time where we had to be on a on the back of a dragon, and that was just us like on a green barrel.
- 26:57SPEAKER_02: And you're just like they're just like go, and they're like, look around, you're like, whoa, wow.
- 27:03SPEAKER_02: It's so hard.
- 27:04SPEAKER_02: Like I I I have no doubt that I was terrible at it.
- 27:07SPEAKER_02: So like, yeah, just doing that sort of stuff is is is nuts to me.
- 27:11SPEAKER_02: Um, and also that yeah, that chase chasing is so CGI, like yeah, it must have been uh horrible six months.
- 27:22SPEAKER_03: I just wonder if like it's tiny moment, it's probably it has to have been like one shot each time, like each day or something like that.
- 27:30SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I don't know, it can't be much.
- 27:33SPEAKER_02: How long did it take to shoot the whole movie?
- 27:35SPEAKER_02: That's a good six months.
- 27:39SPEAKER_02: By that standard, like the rest of the movie should have taken them like three years to shoot or something.
- 27:43SPEAKER_02: I mean the Wachowski.
- 27:44SPEAKER_02: When they just rush everything else and they're like, let's focus on this Chicago chase.
- 27:47SPEAKER_03: The Wachowskis are known for like their long shoots though.
- 27:52SPEAKER_03: Uh really uh so it's all it says is 2nd of April 2013.
- 27:57SPEAKER_03: So I don't know like when I don't know when they finished.
- 28:01SPEAKER_03: Oh man.
- 28:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but it was I mean it was it was I enjoyed that chase.
- 28:06SPEAKER_02: It was good.
- 28:07SPEAKER_02: I don't really remember it.
- 28:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 28:13SPEAKER_02: It's fine.
- 28:16SPEAKER_02: I would prefer if they'd taken uh six months to film that like DMV sequence.
- 28:21SPEAKER_02: I bet that just make it longer.
- 28:22SPEAKER_03: I bet you're right that it took like a month though.
- 28:24SPEAKER_02: I absolutely so good.
- 28:27SPEAKER_02: Oh, there's also um around that time is another amazing line, probably my favourite line of the whole movie, is when um after they've gone through I think before after they've gone through the D the DMV, when she's like they've confirmed that she's a a princess.
- 28:43SPEAKER_02: Um and then and then Channing Tatum comes through to her and she's alone and he says, uh, here you go, your majesty, and he gives her some pills and he's like, You want to take these because uh we're about to go through a portal and it can be a bit rough on the bowels.
- 28:55SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah.
- 28:56SPEAKER_02: And she goes, Oh, please don't call me your majesty.
- 28:58SPEAKER_02: There's nothing royal about my bowels.
- 29:00SPEAKER_02: And she she says that um I think if like if you're reading the script, it would have like brackets flirting.
- 29:07SPEAKER_02: Like, because the the way that she says it is so it's so flirty, like and it's clearly like a little bantery moment between them.
- 29:14SPEAKER_02: But it's just essentially her saying, like, oh no, I I should my shits are insane.
- 29:23SPEAKER_02: I have I have the runs, and it's it's a fucking horror show, so don't worry.
- 29:29SPEAKER_02: That's why she's always cleaning the toilet.
- 29:32SPEAKER_02: I have to say, I think a toilet cleaning technique is not great.
- 29:35SPEAKER_02: I was watching, I was like, she's not scrubbing very hard at all.
- 29:38SPEAKER_02: I just yeah.
- 29:40SPEAKER_02: Just I I if you're gonna play that part.
- 29:43SPEAKER_02: It's Mina Cunis that's probably never cleaned a toilet in her life.
- 29:46SPEAKER_02: Let's be real.
- 29:47SPEAKER_02: Yeah, probably not because she's been acting since what she was like 14 on the semi show.
- 29:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah, she was so young when she started doing that show, wasn't she?
- 29:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah, she lied about her age to go on it.
- 30:00SPEAKER_02: Is she and Ashton Kutcher still together?
- 30:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they are.
- 30:03SPEAKER_02: I think they're married.
- 30:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 30:05SPEAKER_02: Amazing.
- 30:06unknown: Yeah.
- 30:08SPEAKER_03: Good for them.
- 30:09SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 30:10SPEAKER_03: Sure.
- 30:12SPEAKER_03: Although the fact that he knew her when she was 14 and she was and he was like, I don't know, it's a little bit weird, but Oh yeah.
- 30:21SPEAKER_03: That is weird.
- 30:23SPEAKER_02: That's clear.
- 30:23SPEAKER_02: Although there were a couple on the show.
- 30:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah, we would have had to act that.
- 30:30SPEAKER_02: I love all all the I love all the the production design on this on this this movie.
- 30:35SPEAKER_02: I just think it's I just think it's fantastic.
- 30:38SPEAKER_02: I'm sorry, I just noticed something like insane.
- 30:41SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 30:42SPEAKER_03: The script was over 600 pages long.
- 30:45SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah, 600 pages.
- 30:46SPEAKER_02: So they must have been planning.
- 30:49SPEAKER_02: Do you think they were gonna like break it up into a trilogy?
- 30:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 30:53SPEAKER_02: I think they have to have.
- 30:56SPEAKER_02: I mean I can I can em I can fully imagine 600 pages um of because there's so much uh interesting story to be had in um the politics of how the business works.
- 31:09SPEAKER_02: The face screen business.
- 31:12SPEAKER_02: Uh, you know, there's so many more worlds we could fly to to hear about um corporate uh espionage.
- 31:20SPEAKER_02: Well, like it's uh it's very um popular to do big space uh movies that are all about like tr trading, right?
- 31:29SPEAKER_03: Like trade.
- 31:31SPEAKER_02: There is a Star Wars movie about that.
- 31:35SPEAKER_03: Yeah, exactly.
- 31:36SPEAKER_03: It's huge.
- 31:37SPEAKER_03: People love that.
- 31:38SPEAKER_03: No, there there actually is a start.
- 31:39SPEAKER_03: Episode two is is like all about like the trade stuff.
- 31:42SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah, yeah, no, I know.
- 31:44SPEAKER_02: The first one is as well, like Phantom Menace is is very trade trade oriented.
- 31:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah, because the second one's about like shorting, uh, they're all about like yeah, just bus underhanded business deals.
- 31:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 31:58SPEAKER_02: Um which is it's bleak because it just makes you think like you know, even if we do manage to ri like reach out beyond our own solar system, we'll still be dealing with capitalism.
- 32:07SPEAKER_02: Yeah, still capitalism wherever you go, capitalism.
- 32:10SPEAKER_02: It's all there is.
- 32:15SPEAKER_02: Um but so yeah, they they use um the big reveal is that um they use uh the the space people the they the the the big houses of intergalactic um power use planets uh full of human beings um as sort of cattle um to turn into the space they harvest them, they say.
- 32:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah, for the genetic material that is used to to prolong youth.
- 32:41SPEAKER_02: And and there's a great line about how uh in space time is the only is the greatest commodity.
- 32:48SPEAKER_02: Which I I love that line.
- 32:49SPEAKER_02: I think it's great.
- 32:51SPEAKER_02: True.
- 32:51SPEAKER_02: It's true.
- 32:52SPEAKER_02: Makes me think about you know time.
- 32:55SPEAKER_02: You know, especially you know, after the year we've had these these past two years, yeah, this movie is more prescient than ever.
- 33:02SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 33:02SPEAKER_02: Everyone needs to watch it.
- 33:07SPEAKER_03: Um I'm trying to think of like what oh yeah, we haven't talked about like well you you did mention that it's like kind of like succession in the in the in the way that like is the three of them competing for like who's gonna take over.
- 33:23SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 33:24SPEAKER_03: So the other two are Douglas Booth and uh Tuppence Middleton.
- 33:29SPEAKER_03: Tuppence Middleton, yeah.
- 33:31SPEAKER_03: Who I don't know.
- 33:33SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they um they're the uh the uh brass a Brassex family, and they um uh they they all want control of this company.
- 33:44SPEAKER_02: Uh they're actually yeah, I feel like there is a lot more that must have got cut out of their because it feels like it they're they they they're almost never in the same room.
- 33:54SPEAKER_02: Like for the this warring family.
- 33:57SPEAKER_02: They're in the room at the start, and then I don't think they ever see each other.
- 34:01SPEAKER_02: So clearly, like stuff must have got cut out.
- 34:07SPEAKER_02: They just sort of send they they live in these gaudy spaceships in different planets, and and Mila Kunas just gets sort of shuttled from one to the other.
- 34:16SPEAKER_03: She just goes around from each one.
- 34:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and then put into like different dresses and and had her she every every ship she goes to, she gets her hair done in like a crazy new way, and then like sits down to a weird dinner with one of these guys, and then like someone else comes in with guns, and like a bunch of lizards come in, they're like, We're taking you to the other ship now, and she goes there and like gets stuffed into another like ball gown with like flowers in her hair, and like has another dinner.
- 34:41SPEAKER_02: It's so great.
- 34:42SPEAKER_02: Uh and like the the the the the younger guy has like an orgy bubble in his spaceship where he's just yeah, he's like just having a big sex sex pile in zero gravity.
- 34:56SPEAKER_02: I can't even remember what he what his goal is.
- 35:00SPEAKER_03: He wants to marry her.
- 35:01SPEAKER_03: He wants to marry her so that he can take like then he can kill her and take over.
- 35:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 35:06SPEAKER_02: He wants to kill her.
- 35:07SPEAKER_02: He wants to marry his mum, which essentially.
- 35:10SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah, I didn't even think about that.
- 35:13SPEAKER_02: Subtext.
- 35:14SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 35:14SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 35:16SPEAKER_02: Who needs it?
- 35:17SPEAKER_02: Who needs it in space?
- 35:19SPEAKER_03: Basically, like yeah, that's his way of getting around it.
- 35:21SPEAKER_03: He wants to kill he wants to like the only way to take over is to is to marry her and kill her, he thinks.
- 35:30SPEAKER_03: And then like any red man's version is to get her to sign over the the rights, I guess.
- 35:37SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 35:41SPEAKER_02: The rights to earth.
- 35:43SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 35:44SPEAKER_02: He wants her to cash out her stocks.
- 35:47SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 35:48SPEAKER_02: And and and leave.
- 35:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 35:54SPEAKER_02: It's uh yeah, which is a great stake to to have emotional stakes going into the into the last bit of the um act.
- 36:02SPEAKER_02: Couldn't be higher.
- 36:03SPEAKER_03: And then and then the daughter what's what she she's just does she have any like saying she's just fine with it, isn't she?
- 36:12SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 36:13SPEAKER_03: I forget what she wants.
- 36:16SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 36:17SPEAKER_03: I don't think she wants anything.
- 36:19SPEAKER_03: Does she not?
- 36:20SPEAKER_03: She just wants to be part of it.
- 36:23SPEAKER_03: I feel like she's just happy being around.
- 36:25SPEAKER_03: And like she I think she tries to protect Melakunis at one point.
- 36:29SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 36:29SPEAKER_02: Yeah, maybe she does.
- 36:32SPEAKER_02: Ah, yeah.
- 36:33SPEAKER_02: Well, anyway, it's a roller coaster ride, and uh you know, these sort of details they they you don't worry about them.
- 36:40SPEAKER_02: You'd learn you'd learn about them in the sequels.
- 36:43SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 36:47SPEAKER_02: Um there's a lot of lots of big space battles, which are great.
- 36:51SPEAKER_02: Um it looks awesome.
- 36:53SPEAKER_03: It looks great, this movie.
- 36:55SPEAKER_03: This movie has a really good look to it.
- 36:57SPEAKER_03: Um look.
- 36:58SPEAKER_03: And it hasn't aged at all.
- 36:59SPEAKER_02: Like it's only been six years, but we've come a long way.
- 37:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 37:05SPEAKER_03: Well, it took they spent two years working on the effects, apparently.
- 37:08SPEAKER_03: Because they were supposed to come out a year.
- 37:11SPEAKER_03: It was supposed to come out in 2014, and then they delayed it another year so they could finish the effects.
- 37:16SPEAKER_03: Well, good.
- 37:17SPEAKER_03: I'm glad they I'm glad they did.
- 37:21SPEAKER_02: Hats off.
- 37:22SPEAKER_02: Imagine working on that.
- 37:23SPEAKER_02: Spending ages on like on his little boots.
- 37:28SPEAKER_02: Fantastic.
- 37:29SPEAKER_02: And then it bombs.
- 37:30SPEAKER_02: And then it bombs.
- 37:31SPEAKER_02: Oh my god, it'd be so gutting.
- 37:33SPEAKER_03: I mean, well, I say it bombed, it broke even.
- 37:37SPEAKER_03: Oh, that's not a bomb, is it?
- 37:39SPEAKER_03: I mean, how much does it cost?
- 37:40SPEAKER_03: Like a like 200?
- 37:42SPEAKER_03: It costs uh 176 million.
- 37:47SPEAKER_03: Hmm.
- 37:48SPEAKER_03: And it made it made 183.
- 37:52SPEAKER_02: I was in a movie that cost I think I think a hundred million.
- 37:57SPEAKER_02: Maybe maybe eighty million.
- 37:58SPEAKER_02: What?
- 37:59SPEAKER_02: And and it made uh ten million.
- 38:02SPEAKER_02: What movie was this?
- 38:03SPEAKER_02: It was a it was called The Warrior's Way, and it was shot in New Zealand.
- 38:08SPEAKER_02: You would not have seen it because uh nobody saw it.
- 38:11SPEAKER_02: Um it was a evidently it had Jeffrey Rush and Kate Bosworth and Danny Houston, and it was a um uh it was a Japanese co-pro with uh sorry, no, it was Korean, a Korean co-production with uh New Zealand and with America, and it was a samurai western, and it was shot uh entirely on green screen.
- 38:46SPEAKER_02: Um it uh yeah, it bombed.
- 38:48SPEAKER_02: Um did you have a big role in it?
- 38:51SPEAKER_02: No, I just played a sort of a guy who hung out.
- 38:54SPEAKER_02: Um my main memory of that was just getting to play Xbox in the trailer um because I was on set a lot just hanging out playing Halo.
- 39:03SPEAKER_02: Um but yeah, yeah, I mean it must suck to just work so long on something and then it just doesn't do great.
- 39:11SPEAKER_02: But this, you know, it it made it it made its money back.
- 39:14SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 39:16SPEAKER_03: I guess.
- 39:17SPEAKER_03: I guess.
- 39:20SPEAKER_03: Although Warrior's Way's got a better rating than uh than this.
- 39:24SPEAKER_02: Oh wow.
- 39:25SPEAKER_02: What what's the rating of Warrior's Way?
- 39:27SPEAKER_02: If you what do you think it is?
- 39:29SPEAKER_02: I imagine I imagine it's got like 30% on 31.
- 39:33SPEAKER_02: Oh wow, you could do it for this podcast.
- 39:35SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 39:36SPEAKER_02: And for find someone to defend it.
- 39:38SPEAKER_03: 47 from the uh audience.
- 39:40SPEAKER_03: Oh, not bad.
- 39:42SPEAKER_03: It's better.
- 39:43SPEAKER_03: Okay, yeah, yeah.
- 39:45SPEAKER_03: So do you do you know other people that have seen it?
- 39:48SPEAKER_03: That are like fans of it.
- 39:50SPEAKER_03: No.
- 39:54SPEAKER_03: I've maybe I'll watch it.
- 39:56SPEAKER_02: Anyone who's seen it.
- 39:58SPEAKER_02: Is it hard to find?
- 40:01SPEAKER_02: I have no idea.
- 40:02SPEAKER_02: I haven't I haven't even tried to watch it.
- 40:03SPEAKER_02: Oh, you've never seen it?
- 40:05SPEAKER_02: Oh no, I've seen it.
- 40:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 40:06SPEAKER_02: Uh I I think I got a a a copy of the DVD w way back in the day, but um yeah, no, I have no idea we'd watch it.
- 40:15SPEAKER_02: I love that it's entirely on green screen.
- 40:17SPEAKER_02: That that sounds wild.
- 40:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah, mostly they they shot it in the spec studio and they they built like a um a Western town.
- 40:26SPEAKER_02: Um that's pretty cool though.
- 40:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it was a cool idea.
- 40:31SPEAKER_02: It had like massive sword fights and like cowboys getting blown up and stuff.
- 40:36SPEAKER_02: See, I like the sound of that.
- 40:38SPEAKER_02: It does sound like it would be good.
- 40:42SPEAKER_02: Movies are very hard to make.
- 40:43SPEAKER_02: I know that.
- 40:44SPEAKER_03: Yeah, see if you can spot me.
- 40:46SPEAKER_03: But how long are you in it for?
- 40:47SPEAKER_03: You barely in it at all.
- 40:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I'm barely in it.
- 40:51SPEAKER_02: But I am I am in a cut in a couple of scenes.
- 40:54SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 40:54SPEAKER_03: I just noticed your name is Pug in the movie.
- 40:56SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, Pug.
- 40:59SPEAKER_03: The fantastic character of Pug.
- 41:02SPEAKER_03: Slug, Pug, and Rug.
- 41:04SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 41:05SPEAKER_03: An actor's dream.
- 41:09SPEAKER_03: I'm just trying to look I shouldn't be looking up your credits in the middle of this.
- 41:18SPEAKER_03: You've done a lot of green screen stuff then.
- 41:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I just realized I had I have done I had yeah.
- 41:24SPEAKER_03: And you say you're only in like a little bit of power, you're in loads of Power Rangers.
- 41:28SPEAKER_02: I was in a season, so I was in I I did it for a year.
- 41:32SPEAKER_03: Oh, it says you're you're listed in two different series.
- 41:35SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I played a uh a robot and the voice of a a train, a train robot in a in a different series.
- 41:44SPEAKER_02: Oh, okay.
- 41:47SPEAKER_02: A knight who transforms into a train.
- 41:51SPEAKER_03: Oh, then you've done like you you continue to do it.
- 41:54SPEAKER_03: You've done like Mega Force and Dino Charge as well, voices.
- 41:58SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah, yeah.
- 41:59SPEAKER_02: I've done I think just a couple of monster voices for them.
- 42:02SPEAKER_03: Yeah, there you go.
- 42:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 42:06SPEAKER_02: Well, it's because the uh the recording studio is down the road from was down the road from my house in Auckland.
- 42:11SPEAKER_02: So I just sort of wandered down.
- 42:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah, pretty much, because I knew the guy, the guy who cast all the voices for the for the monsters.
- 42:21SPEAKER_02: We're we're friends, so I just would be like, mate, uh you got any bloody monster voices coming out?
- 42:26SPEAKER_02: I'll come and do it.
- 42:27SPEAKER_02: He'd be like, oh yeah, sure, come in.
- 42:32SPEAKER_02: That's how you make it in uh in New Zealand.
- 42:35SPEAKER_03: That's that's a great way to do it.
- 42:39SPEAKER_03: I also didn't know that most of I didn't know that so much of Power Rangers was shot in New Zealand as well.
- 42:43SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it all it all is.
- 42:45SPEAKER_03: Really?
- 42:46SPEAKER_02: Yeah, for like the last 20 years.
- 42:49SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 42:49SPEAKER_02: Something like that.
- 42:50SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 42:50SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 42:51SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 42:52SPEAKER_03: I didn't like I was just about too old to be into Power Rangers when it came out.
- 42:58SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 42:59SPEAKER_03: Uh when it first came out.
- 43:01SPEAKER_03: So I was like, I I missed that whole like I missed everything about it.
- 43:05SPEAKER_03: Really.
- 43:06SPEAKER_03: My brother was really into it.
- 43:08SPEAKER_02: Well Yeah, people I mean, you you either watch it as a kid or and then or or you just have no idea about it.
- 43:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 43:16SPEAKER_02: But there are a lot of people who who love it as adults.
- 43:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 43:20SPEAKER_03: In a huge way.
- 43:23SPEAKER_03: It's cool.
- 43:24SPEAKER_03: Like I that's that's like that must have been a great role to have.
- 43:28SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it was a dream.
- 43:29SPEAKER_02: It was my first job outside of uh really high school.
- 43:32SPEAKER_02: So I was like, oh this acting is easy.
- 43:39SPEAKER_03: Did you audition for it or did you just wander in and go, can I oh mate, you gotta draw?
- 43:44SPEAKER_03: Uh no, I did audition, yeah.
- 43:46SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
- 43:48SPEAKER_03: Dream, dream job.
- 43:51SPEAKER_03: Um but yeah, so back back to this.
- 43:55SPEAKER_03: Like I one thing I wanted to I noticed about this as well was that Natalie Portman was originally.
- 44:00SPEAKER_03: Cast of Jupiter, but dropped out.
- 44:02SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I saw that.
- 44:03SPEAKER_03: And then Rooney Mara.
- 44:05SPEAKER_03: And then she was uh she didn't do it either.
- 44:10SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 44:11SPEAKER_02: I wonder I'm trying to imagine the film with them in the lead, and Yeah.
- 44:17SPEAKER_03: I got I mean I don't think it would be.
- 44:18SPEAKER_03: I can't imagine Nasley Portman with Channing Tatum.
- 44:22SPEAKER_03: I don't think that would have worked.
- 44:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you know what, you're right.
- 44:25SPEAKER_02: I don't see that.
- 44:26SPEAKER_02: I don't see them having any chemistry.
- 44:28SPEAKER_02: But you know what, Rooney Mara and Channing Tatum, I reckon there would have been tons of chemistry.
- 44:32SPEAKER_02: I can see that.
- 44:33SPEAKER_02: I think do you think the Wachowskis are not great at like Story?
- 44:38SPEAKER_02: Oh, I said well no, I was I think they're great at story.
- 44:41SPEAKER_02: Like I was I I mean The Matrix is one of my favourite movies of all time.
- 44:44SPEAKER_02: Oh I love the Matrix.
- 44:45SPEAKER_02: I think it's it's a perfect movie.
- 44:47SPEAKER_02: But but I was thinking about like one of the I rewatched, because I haven't seen the latest Matrix, but I I was rewatching the um the the sequels.
- 44:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 44:57SPEAKER_02: And I was think like I was thinking that maybe one of the reasons that they don't work as well, the sequels, is because the relationship that they build up between Neo and Trinity is very kind of thin, like it's paper thin in the first one.
- 45:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 45:10SPEAKER_02: Because it's not about that, but it does, you know, it it's the it's the emotional core of the ending, yeah, and you need it.
- 45:17SPEAKER_02: But then there's going into the sequels, they have to exp expand on that relationship, but there isn't really any relationship there.
- 45:24SPEAKER_02: Like they don't have um like why why do they like each other other than that just like they're hot and you know in that's exactly the same in this as well, isn't it?
- 45:34SPEAKER_02: It's the same thing, they're just kind of in the same situation together, so they love each other, but like they have no personalities.
- 45:42SPEAKER_02: I don't know, there's no like exchange of of of of um ideas or like um anything that sort of sparks a like a great character moment between them.
- 45:53SPEAKER_02: So I think I want you know, maybe that's where they where they they if they're listening to this, that's where they need to up their game.
- 46:02SPEAKER_02: But I don't know, maybe maybe Matrix Resurrections, because it looks like it's gonna be about their relationship, so maybe maybe that addresses a lot of that stuff.
- 46:08SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 46:09SPEAKER_03: Well, it looks like it's about them just like learning about each other for the first time again.
- 46:15SPEAKER_03: I think that's great.
- 46:16SPEAKER_03: Like that, yeah.
- 46:17SPEAKER_03: That sounds to me like a great it does, but everyone that's seen it has said it's really bad.
- 46:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but you know what?
- 46:24SPEAKER_02: People see it was bad, Jupiter ascending.
- 46:26SPEAKER_02: People don't know shit.
- 46:27SPEAKER_02: That's true.
- 46:28SPEAKER_00: People are dumb.
- 46:31SPEAKER_03: There's so many there's so much trivia, and this is that's fascinating.
- 46:34SPEAKER_03: This Mila Kunis, uh well, Jupiter Jones asks 105 questions in this film.
- 46:43SPEAKER_03: So much exposition.
- 46:44SPEAKER_02: Oh, the the dream role, the dream leading role to be someone who just asks like heaps of questions.
- 46:50SPEAKER_02: I do like what I do like about the relationship is that he's very um that Channing Tatum is very sort of protective and just sort of doting, and and like he always calls her your majesty, and he's so he's never it's very dog-like, isn't it?
- 47:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think and that you know what I said that about there's no subtext in space.
- 47:07SPEAKER_02: Uh here's a dog, he's doting like a dog.
- 47:11SPEAKER_02: Uh um and Sean Bean is treacherous like a bee.
- 47:15SPEAKER_02: He's no, he says a bee never lies, bees always tell the truth.
- 47:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but that's not true because he lies.
- 47:20SPEAKER_02: Because he lies, yeah.
- 47:21SPEAKER_02: Fuck me, that's genius.
- 47:23SPEAKER_02: Is that what you're thinking about that?
- 47:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I just I just realized that just now.
- 47:27SPEAKER_02: He's a treacherous bee.
- 47:28SPEAKER_02: He is, yeah.
- 47:30SPEAKER_02: That'll be the human part of him.
- 47:32SPEAKER_02: He would have that would have been a real war within him.
- 47:34SPEAKER_02: The bee part's like, don't tell the truth.
- 47:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he's like, no, I must lie.
- 47:39SPEAKER_02: Um but uh you know Channing Tatum, he's singularly focused on her and on protecting her and and helping her um achieve her goal of of finding the will to not sign this business deal.
- 47:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 47:56SPEAKER_02: And uh and um and he does.
- 48:01SPEAKER_02: And and that you know, that's kind of nice because that you know, even at the end, he's just so clearly like head over heels in love with her.
- 48:07SPEAKER_02: And um yeah, I like that about aspect of the relationship.
- 48:12SPEAKER_02: You know, it's not like he's never he's never he's not like a sort of classic movie um Harrison Ford type where he's a bit of an arsehole.
- 48:18SPEAKER_02: You know, he's he's like very nice to her.
- 48:23SPEAKER_03: Yeah, he doesn't really do anything wrong other than what we learn about his past.
- 48:28SPEAKER_02: So it seems like feels like he's trying to he wants bit a guy's throat out.
- 48:33SPEAKER_02: But but who has it?
- 48:35SPEAKER_02: Like, you know, we've all we've all made mistakes.
- 48:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we all made mistakes.
- 48:42SPEAKER_02: And at the end he gets his wings back.
- 48:44SPEAKER_02: He does, yeah.
- 48:45SPEAKER_02: Which is an insane detail to me because he has space boots.
- 48:49SPEAKER_02: Like, why does he need wings?
- 48:50SPEAKER_02: But he And if he's half human, half dog, why does he have wings?
- 48:52SPEAKER_04: I know, why does he have wings?
- 48:54SPEAKER_02: Wouldn't it like a dog would not be used to having wings?
- 48:57SPEAKER_02: Like I feel like the dog part of him would be like, no, we'll stay on the ground.
- 49:03SPEAKER_02: The wings thing.
- 49:04SPEAKER_02: Oh, they were like cybernetic wings, aren't they?
- 49:06SPEAKER_02: But they're at the end they look very f feathery.
- 49:10SPEAKER_02: They are doesn't I love that yeah, there's all like different the different people you know cross their genetic material with different animals.
- 49:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 49:22SPEAKER_02: Like why would you be a mouse guy?
- 49:25SPEAKER_02: Like there's like a bunch of a bunch of characters who are like I I mean I get the dog, like, yeah, make a dog man because of all his skills.
- 49:35SPEAKER_02: But like a mouse, does make a really timid guy?
- 49:38SPEAKER_03: Like who's I don't know, just um really low in the food chain?
- 49:44SPEAKER_03: Why do that?
- 49:45SPEAKER_03: Do they get to decide what they I feel like no, they don't get yeah, so maybe that's better than they get made for their purpose.
- 49:52SPEAKER_03: Yeah, maybe it's like I don't know.
- 49:54SPEAKER_02: There was there is an owl guy who I assume is very wise.
- 49:59SPEAKER_03: Very wise, but he only he only works at night.
- 50:03SPEAKER_03: He's super wise and he's always very sleepy.
- 50:13SPEAKER_01: It's fantastic.
- 50:14SPEAKER_01: I love it's just so many ideas.
- 50:16SPEAKER_03: It's it's so it's too many ideas.
- 50:18SPEAKER_02: Because they they must have gone to the production team as well and just be like, guys, just whatever you got.
- 50:24SPEAKER_02: You know how like people always draw up heaps of those like um uh like images of like what could be in the movie, and and like yeah, it's like they took all of them and they were like, yeah, let's have all let's have everything.
- 50:38SPEAKER_02: Do you think they filmed all 600 pages?
- 50:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah, probably.
- 50:42SPEAKER_02: I think they wanted to, for sure.
- 50:44SPEAKER_02: But then maybe they went overboard with that six-month scene in Chicago.
- 50:47SPEAKER_02: They're like, guys, we have to cut 400 pages.
- 50:52SPEAKER_03: That's the most important scene in the movie, and they just cut it all.
- 50:56SPEAKER_02: This was only half a page of it says they fight in Chicago, and we're gonna have to cut that.
- 51:04SPEAKER_02: We're gonna have to cut that whole scene where they go to court and have to We're not cutting the court scene at some point.
- 51:13SPEAKER_02: That whole the the tax audit scene, that's going.
- 51:16SPEAKER_02: That whole the tack the scene where the company gets audited.
- 51:19SPEAKER_03: Oh no, it's they're already I've already started work on the face.
- 51:25SPEAKER_02: It's gonna be a crab guy.
- 51:27SPEAKER_02: He's gonna come in and audit the shit out of this company.
- 51:31SPEAKER_03: A fantastic movie.
- 51:32SPEAKER_03: Oh, an insane movie.
- 51:34SPEAKER_03: Um what else do we have do we have anything to even talk about?
- 51:38SPEAKER_03: Like, oh, Sean Bean doesn't die in this movie.
- 51:42SPEAKER_03: Oh, does he not?
- 51:44SPEAKER_03: No.
- 51:44SPEAKER_03: Yeah, because I I guess I just assumed that he did.
- 51:47SPEAKER_03: Yeah, everyone assumes that he's gonna die.
- 51:49SPEAKER_03: And so they apparently they make an in-joke that he made it through.
- 51:53SPEAKER_03: Well, in the movie.
- 51:54SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 51:56SPEAKER_02: That's weird.
- 51:57SPEAKER_02: That's like something they would do in uh that's like something that belongs in the MCU, you know.
- 52:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 52:04SPEAKER_03: But no, I don't remember that joke coming up, but yeah, he's he survives the movie, which is yeah, unusual for Sean.
- 52:11SPEAKER_01: Does he have a sick does he have a sick daughter?
- 52:13SPEAKER_01: Because she I know his daughter was like coughing at one point.
- 52:17SPEAKER_03: She was coughing for no reason.
- 52:18SPEAKER_02: I feel like if that's real, if that's real, if she was just coughing for no reason, then that I love that.
- 52:24SPEAKER_02: Because you never see someone just coughing.
- 52:27SPEAKER_02: It's always like, yeah, she's very ill.
- 52:30SPEAKER_02: But I still don't remember her being at all.
- 52:34SPEAKER_02: She doesn't I'll go go get some groceries, Dad.
- 52:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 52:38SPEAKER_02: And I was like, oh, she something's up with her.
- 52:40SPEAKER_02: And it's very funny.
- 52:42SPEAKER_03: Oh no, she just she's just a bit sick.
- 52:44SPEAKER_03: She's fine.
- 52:45SPEAKER_03: Just couldn't do another, they couldn't shoot another scene.
- 52:48SPEAKER_03: They couldn't do it again.
- 52:51SPEAKER_02: Everything was such crunch.
- 52:53SPEAKER_02: They had no time to shoot it anymore.
- 52:55SPEAKER_03: We spent six months on this other scene.
- 52:56SPEAKER_02: We can't know why do we do that?
- 52:58SPEAKER_02: We just love being in Chicago.
- 52:59SPEAKER_02: We love the deep dish pizza.
- 53:01SPEAKER_02: Do you go to the UCB?
- 53:03SPEAKER_02: Oh man, it's so good.
- 53:05SPEAKER_02: We had such a nice time.
- 53:06SPEAKER_02: We didn't want to leave because we have to go back to these boring green screen sound stages down in Atlanta or wherever we shut it.
- 53:11SPEAKER_02: So we just don't want to do that.
- 53:18SPEAKER_03: But yeah, I I I mean, like, oh, apparently this movie did you see it in 3D?
- 53:24SPEAKER_03: Apparently this movie was in 3D.
- 53:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I don't remember.
- 53:28SPEAKER_02: I can't I can't imagine we did.
- 53:30SPEAKER_02: Because we were paying to go see these movies for the podcast, and uh we were seeing one a week and paying out of pocket to see.
- 53:37SPEAKER_02: I wasn't in 3D money back then.
- 53:39SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 53:42SPEAKER_03: Um what else is there that we can even talk about?
- 53:45SPEAKER_03: I like it's so weird.
- 53:47SPEAKER_03: It ends with the bridge collapsing and and Eddie Red Mane falling to his death.
- 53:56SPEAKER_03: And which why would you first of all don't kill him off?
- 54:00SPEAKER_03: Don't kill that insane character off.
- 54:03SPEAKER_02: Oh, they certainly uh could only get any red man for one movie.
- 54:07SPEAKER_02: He was not there's no way he's signing on for multiple.
- 54:12SPEAKER_03: I feel like he would he would have come back.
- 54:15SPEAKER_03: Yeah, maybe.
- 54:17SPEAKER_03: Well, when when they shot it, he wasn't it wasn't like a star name at that point.
- 54:24SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but like between between like that and then it coming out, he became a star.
- 54:29SPEAKER_03: So yeah.
- 54:32SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 54:33SPEAKER_03: But I don't know.
- 54:34SPEAKER_03: Maybe yeah, maybe he wouldn't have come back.
- 54:35SPEAKER_03: Maybe it would have been Douglas Booth taking over.
- 54:38SPEAKER_03: The brother.
- 54:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 54:40SPEAKER_02: I mean what what could they even what stories are left to tell there?
- 54:44SPEAKER_03: Like What stories are left to tell?
- 54:48SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah, I guess but maybe there's not stories that left to tell with that family, but she ends up being the owner of Earth, which I love.
- 54:56SPEAKER_02: I love that.
- 54:57SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but it also Oh yeah.
- 54:59SPEAKER_03: So the other thing about that is that nobody nobody on Earth remembers anything because they wipe their memories.
- 55:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I didn't like it.
- 55:06SPEAKER_03: So apparently that's how that's men in black shit.
- 55:09SPEAKER_03: Everyone's yeah, it's very men in black.
- 55:12SPEAKER_03: It's like that you you wipe your memories and also like the buildings get repaired instantly when there's like an explosion or something.
- 55:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah, because you gotta keep the people happy, otherwise it toughens up the face cream.
- 55:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 55:26SPEAKER_03: I did like the line about like, oh, not everyone.
- 55:29SPEAKER_03: We can't catch everyone uh to wipe their memories, but nobody believes the people that start telling these stories.
- 55:35SPEAKER_03: I did like that.
- 55:36SPEAKER_02: That is good.
- 55:37SPEAKER_02: I love that.
- 55:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 55:41SPEAKER_02: I love and I loved that um they they included some of the classic aliens in there, little little little grey guys.
- 55:47SPEAKER_03: Yeah, little weird grey guys.
- 55:49SPEAKER_03: What those I'm so glad they didn't continue to have those because it's just it they looked very weird.
- 55:56SPEAKER_03: Yeah, maybe it didn't hold up as much.
- 55:59SPEAKER_02: Those were like the things that didn't hold up, yeah.
- 56:02SPEAKER_02: But I love that there was like the anime bounty hunters as well, they were cool.
- 56:06SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I do like the I did like the bounty hunters.
- 56:09SPEAKER_03: I like the the thing is I like the CGI in this, I like the way everything looks for the most part.
- 56:16SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 56:16SPEAKER_03: It's just the story, I think, just doesn't work.
- 56:19SPEAKER_03: And then like the It's the story in Eddie Redmain, I would say.
- 56:24SPEAKER_03: Do you know what?
- 56:24SPEAKER_02: This would be a much better like HBO series, like a great HBO series, yeah.
- 56:33SPEAKER_02: Hell yeah, man.
- 56:34SPEAKER_02: Like, put like just like tell the story over a season or two or three seasons, because it is they really are trying to pack 600 pages into a two-hour movie, and thank god that they haven't tried to extend the runtime because I had no patience for that.
- 56:52SPEAKER_02: But um, yeah, it just uh a three-hour movie, no, thank you.
- 56:56SPEAKER_02: But a eight ten hour TV series, yes please.
- 57:00SPEAKER_02: Oh gladly.
- 57:01SPEAKER_02: That is strange, isn't it, how like we accept that and and also like I'll binge that happily in Bongo.
- 57:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and the key could keep cutting back to the the the cousin, like trying to what are the little schemes to make money?
- 57:14SPEAKER_03: Yeah, little horrible one side episode where they just focus entirely on him.
- 57:28SPEAKER_01: Well that that that's an idea.
- 57:29SPEAKER_01: I think that would be great.
- 57:31SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 57:31SPEAKER_03: Well, now they've done the Matrix stuff, they've gone back to the Matrix, they can go back to this.
- 57:35SPEAKER_02: Yes, great.
- 57:36SPEAKER_02: Fantastic.
- 57:37SPEAKER_03: Did you ever see Speed Racer?
- 57:38SPEAKER_03: I've not seen that.
- 57:39SPEAKER_02: No, I've heard it.
- 57:40SPEAKER_02: I've heard it's great.
- 57:41SPEAKER_03: I've heard people really it's also on the list because it's it's like low-rated.
- 57:47SPEAKER_03: Oh great, well, maybe we'll do this one.
- 57:50SPEAKER_02: Do that again.
- 57:51SPEAKER_02: I'll go see it, and maybe I'll love it.
- 57:53SPEAKER_03: Yeah, maybe you will love it.
- 57:54SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 57:55SPEAKER_03: It looks that looks more insane than this, but it's also Speed Racer, so it's expected.
- 58:03SPEAKER_03: Um yeah, that's pretty much the movie.
- 58:05SPEAKER_03: Like they they yeah, she she becomes the leader of Earth, but sh that nobody knows on Earth.
- 58:12SPEAKER_03: And she goes just goes back to her family, and her family like don't remember anything that happened, basically.
- 58:18SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 58:18SPEAKER_03: And then it ends with her she gets the space boots and and he gets the um he get she gets the gravity boots and he gets the wings and then they fly off together.
- 58:30SPEAKER_03: Beautiful.
- 58:33SPEAKER_03: Is he gonna live on the second Oh is he gonna live on Earth?
- 58:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 58:38SPEAKER_03: You're saying he's he gonna live on Earth?
- 58:39SPEAKER_03: Probably.
- 58:41SPEAKER_03: He's in love now.
- 58:43SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 58:45SPEAKER_02: He's gonna struggle to get work, I think.
- 58:47SPEAKER_02: He's uh pretty freaky dude.
- 58:51SPEAKER_03: Yeah, he doesn't look he doesn't look like a human.
- 58:59SPEAKER_03: Oh but yeah, so it also ends with the apparently it ends with well it says it ends with them flying to the camera, and that's the second time uh that Wachalski's have done this.
- 59:11SPEAKER_03: The first one was the Matrix.
- 59:14SPEAKER_02: Right, yeah, they love doing that.
- 59:16SPEAKER_02: Is she just gonna so she just she owns Earth and she's uh what is she gonna go back to cleaning toilets and then occasionally flying around?
- 59:27SPEAKER_02: As the owner of Earth.
- 59:29SPEAKER_02: Well she should at the very at the very least like not have to clean toilets for a living.
- 59:33SPEAKER_03: I think But if no one on Earth knows that then Well exactly is she gonna have to sell her eggs?
- 59:45SPEAKER_03: She's yeah.
- 59:48SPEAKER_03: I think she might.
- 59:52SPEAKER_03: Oh okay.
- 59:54SPEAKER_03: Do you have anything else like you want to talk about with this movie?
- 59:57SPEAKER_03: Because I I feel like we've sort of I know I think we've wrung it dry.
- 1:00:00SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:00:01SPEAKER_03: I mean What's your defense of it then?
- 1:00:04SPEAKER_02: Like that we talked about.
- 1:00:07SPEAKER_02: My well my defense of it is that as I mean the the you summed it up quite well with that with that person who said the Jupiter ascending effect of here is a completely new IP, like it's a it's a completely new story, just born from the minds of madness, like it just like it's just a free fall, free form, like a brainstorm in movie form of like, hey, why not?
- 1:00:35SPEAKER_02: Let's here's a bunch of stuff we love, and we're gonna turn it into a movie.
- 1:00:39SPEAKER_02: And um I think the parts of it that are fun and interesting, and like I laughed a lot when I was watching it.
- 1:00:48SPEAKER_02: And I like I it's quite camp, and I think a lot of a lot of the laughs are very camp.
- 1:00:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's it's not like funny, but it's it's it's really fun.
- 1:01:01SPEAKER_02: And then it does get dragged down annoyingly with a lot of like bureaucratic stuff, which which you gotta have if you're sending it in space.
- 1:01:11SPEAKER_02: Um But I don't know, just for the the sheer audacity of it, I just think is is is worth uh is worth it existing.
- 1:01:19SPEAKER_02: I'm so glad that it exists.
- 1:01:21SPEAKER_02: And I uh I wish that more people made more movies like this, and I wish that we were a little um nicer to them because it it's so hard to make a movie, and so hard to make something like this where it's just every step of the way, you're just trusting your gut that like is this decision gonna pay off?
- 1:01:43SPEAKER_02: We've made this guy a B.
- 1:01:44SPEAKER_02: Is that is that gonna be a good thing?
- 1:01:46SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 1:01:50SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's my defense of it.
- 1:01:52SPEAKER_03: I think it's yeah, yeah, I I kind of agree with that.
- 1:01:55SPEAKER_03: It's like I think first of all, I think it's a terrible movie, but I I applaud the the I applaud their attempts to make it and like the the attempt to make something brand new.
- 1:02:06SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 1:02:07SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it it for for everything that doesn't work, I'd much rather watch this than the than a rehashing of something that's been done over and over and over again.
- 1:02:17SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 1:02:17SPEAKER_03: I'd much much rather see something like this because it's much more fun as well.
- 1:02:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:02:23SPEAKER_02: And do you know I think there is like a version of this movie that um we talked about the problems with like the the main characters are kind of the problem and the story's maybe a little confusing, but everything around it is like very like kind of neat and cool and fun.
- 1:02:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:02:38SPEAKER_02: So it's not like it's not a fixable thing, it's just like there's a version of this movie where the the central story is a bit more thought out and like simpler, and then the rest of it I think would just fall into place.
- 1:02:53SPEAKER_02: Like, you know, fifth element is is kind of similar, quite similar in tone, and um but I I would say much better, more successful.
- 1:03:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah, fifth element's great doing this.
- 1:03:02SPEAKER_02: Um but yeah, I don't know, just great.
- 1:03:05SPEAKER_02: I like uh there's so much to love about this movie.
- 1:03:07SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:03:09SPEAKER_03: Okay, so let's let's talk about the the reverse of this then.
- 1:03:13SPEAKER_03: Uh if you've if you've managed to think of one, which is a um a movie that's well reviewed and well loved by critics and audiences that you actually think is a bad movie.
- 1:03:24SPEAKER_02: Um I guess I guess because since we were talking about it, I think and I've been thinking about it in the last couple of days, I think Spider-Man at Home is a bad movie.
- 1:03:33SPEAKER_02: And I think I think because it just I was enjoying it while I was watching it, but it left it left as uh left me feeling kind of yeah, kind of manipulated, I guess.
- 1:03:46SPEAKER_02: Oh interesting.
- 1:03:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean I like I liked seeing uh don't get me wrong, I love seeing the three guys.
- 1:03:53SPEAKER_02: No spoilers um I love seeing the stuff happen, you know, I love seeing the these characters come back and hang out.
- 1:04:01SPEAKER_02: But then the emotional story of like of what was happening to I think all that stuff ruined the um what was happening to like the the the the the like MJ Peter Parker stuff just you know it's meant to be all about having to make that choice whether to be with her or be Spider-Man, the classic thing the Spider-Man has to do, and I feel like the rest of all the other stuff just kind of got in the way and we never had Zend I was just wasted and like if it had been a smaller movie, I don't know, it would have done better.
- 1:04:37SPEAKER_02: But then you know it was fun, but I don't think it's the masterpiece that people uh saying it is.
- 1:04:43SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I wouldn't say so.
- 1:04:44SPEAKER_03: I I was I was talking about this the other day, but I think it's like I enjoyed it, and like because I'm talking about this because they basically they they are trying to push it now for best picture Oscar nomination.
- 1:04:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's mad.
- 1:04:59SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and I was saying like it's a perfectly fine movie, and I enjoyed it, but it's not some kind of masterpiece that deserves to be up.
- 1:05:08SPEAKER_03: Like it's it's it's fine.
- 1:05:11SPEAKER_02: It's yeah, I think and I just I'm just very I think I'm very tired of all the all the joke and the jokes and it's such a Marvel thing, isn't it?
- 1:05:22SPEAKER_03: Like yeah, I am sick of that.
- 1:05:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah, because you just I love I love to laugh.
- 1:05:29SPEAKER_03: You need a quip every time, it just takes you out of it.
- 1:05:33SPEAKER_02: You can never you can never like um go along with that emo you know, be there emotionally with the story if everyone's making fun of the story as it's happening.
- 1:05:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you just you're never involved in it.
- 1:05:44SPEAKER_02: It's too meta, it's like too yeah.
- 1:05:48SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 1:05:49SPEAKER_02: And that's because I watched Spider-Man 2 recently, and god, that's just such a good movie.
- 1:05:52SPEAKER_02: The original Spider-Man 2.
- 1:05:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:05:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah, oh that's still my favorite heart.
- 1:05:57SPEAKER_02: I think it's my favorite one still.
- 1:05:58SPEAKER_02: Yeah, oh it's it's incredible.
- 1:06:00SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:06:02SPEAKER_03: But I anyway, yeah.
- 1:06:04SPEAKER_03: Spider-Man No Way Home, yeah.
- 1:06:06SPEAKER_03: Fair enough.
- 1:06:07SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:06:08SPEAKER_03: I mean I did like it, so you did like it, you just don't think it's uh the mind movies.
- 1:06:12SPEAKER_02: I just don't think it's a great movie, though.
- 1:06:16SPEAKER_03: Uh okay, cool.
- 1:06:18SPEAKER_03: So uh thank you so much for coming on.
- 1:06:21SPEAKER_03: Uh pleasure.

- 1:06:46SPEAKER_03: But uh yeah, yeah.
- 1:06:47SPEAKER_03: Nice.
- 1:06:48SPEAKER_03: Cool.
- 1:06:49SPEAKER_03: Thanks so much for coming on.
