- 0:00Speaker 1: And Delilah said to Samson, Tell me, I pray thee,
- 0:04Speaker 1: wherein thy great strength lieth, and wherewith thou mightest be
- 0:08Speaker 1: bound to afflict thee. Judges 16.6 Dear God, as the
- 0:16Speaker 1: story of Samson rings in my ears, it helps me
- 0:20Speaker 1: to learn the valuable lessons that lie within the words
- 0:23Speaker 1: of Judges 16. Through Samson I too realize that the
- 0:28Speaker 1: strength of my abilities and the power of my moving
- 0:31Speaker 1: on my behalf only come from my obedience to you
- 0:36Speaker 1: and your word. I come against any thinking or behavior
- 0:40Speaker 1: that would have me rely on my own understanding, causing
- 0:44Speaker 1: me to believe that I can accomplish great things apart from.
- 0:47Speaker 2: You, Lord.
- 0:49Speaker 1: I choose to walk in the truth that I am
- 0:53Speaker 1: simply because you are. As I continue on my journey
- 0:59Speaker 1: to fulfillment and purpose, I will become self-correcting and aware
- 1:04Speaker 1: of the moments I step off the path. Through your help,
- 1:09Speaker 1: Holy Spirit, I declare that I live and stay in alignment.
- 1:16Speaker 1: I will not sacrifice my anointing for the simple comforts
- 1:19Speaker 1: and pleasures that can lead to my downfall. I am
- 1:24Speaker 1: locked in. and ready to finish the race of purpose
- 1:28Speaker 1: before me. In Jesus' name.
- 1:33Speaker 3: Amen.

- 1:51Speaker 3: Samson's Downfall In our last story, we saw Samson's strength
- 1:58Speaker 3: and pettiness on display. He developed a rivalry with the
- 2:02Speaker 3: Philistines over his wife, and out of anger and revenge,
- 2:05Speaker 3: he burned their crops and slaughtered 1,000 of their men
- 2:09Speaker 3: with the jawbone of a donkey. God used Samson's strength
- 2:14Speaker 3: and foolishness as a weapon against the enemies of Israel.
- 2:18Speaker 3: Now we see Samson's descent into his own sin. His
- 2:23Speaker 3: foolishness abounds, and he finds himself captive to a witch
- 2:27Speaker 3: in the armies of the Philistines, as inspired by the
- 2:30Speaker 3: book of Judges.
- 2:34Speaker 2: Hello, I'm Pastor Jack Graham with today's episode of the
- 2:37Speaker 2: Bible in a Year podcast. In our last episode, we
- 2:41Speaker 2: saw how Samson used his strength both to exact his
- 2:44Speaker 2: own revenge and as a tool in God's hand to
- 2:47Speaker 2: push back the oppressive Philistines. His anger and quick temper
- 2:51Speaker 2: left a trail of destruction and death across the region.
- 2:55Speaker 2: But God used even Samson's failures to weaken Israel's enemy. Ultimately,
- 3:00Speaker 2: Samson was filled with God's Spirit and righteously defended his
- 3:03Speaker 2: fellow Israelites, leading to him being judged over the people
- 3:07Speaker 2: for 20 years. But tragically, Samson's lusts, disobedience, and foolishness resurface.
- 3:14Speaker 2: And rather simply compromising with danger, he plunges headlong into sin.
- 3:20Speaker 2: Entangled with an evil woman, his strength will be no
- 3:23Speaker 2: match for her hold on his mind. It is a
- 3:26Speaker 2: tragic tale of unchecked sin. But still, God will use
- 3:30Speaker 2: Samson to ultimately win a victory over the Philistines. So
- 3:34Speaker 2: listen to today's reading.
- 3:38Speaker 3: It was dark, and the city of Gaza had fallen asleep.
- 3:42Speaker 3: The only lights came from the dim candles illuminating the
- 3:46Speaker 3: small room where Samson and the prostitute lay. Their shadows
- 3:50Speaker 3: moved against the walls as they moved to one another's bodies.
- 3:55Speaker 3: Throughout the night, Samson drowned out his sorrows and insecurities
- 3:59Speaker 3: in the sheets of the prostitute woman. The Gazites had
- 4:03Speaker 3: caught word that Samson was staying in the city. They
- 4:06Speaker 3: surrounded the prostitute's home and set up an ambush at
- 4:09Speaker 3: the gate of the city in case he escaped. They
- 4:13Speaker 3: kept quiet, planning their attack for when dawn broke. They slept.
- 4:18Speaker 3: not knowing that Samson escaped out the window at midnight. Stealthily,
- 4:23Speaker 3: Samson moved through the alleys of the city towards the
- 4:26Speaker 3: front entrance. Samson stood in front of the gate. The
- 4:30Speaker 3: gate was looming over Samson. Four times his size and
- 4:34Speaker 3: made of pure steel, the gate stood as a barrier
- 4:38Speaker 3: between him and freedom. Samson gripped the steel beams of
- 4:42Speaker 3: the gate and began pulling. SAMSON'S ARMS WERE HARD AS
- 4:46Speaker 3: STONE AND HIS LEGS WERE PLANTED FIRMLY IN THE GROUND
- 4:49Speaker 3: FOR SUPPORT. SLOWLY, THE STEEL BEGAN TO RIP OFF ITS
- 4:53Speaker 3: HINGES AND THE GATE LIFTED FROM ITS FOUNDATION. SAMSON ROSE
- 4:58Speaker 3: THE GATE ABOVE HIS HEAD AND BEGAN TO WALK OUT
- 5:01Speaker 3: OF THE CITY. WITH THE STRENGTH OF AN ELEPHANT AND
- 5:04Speaker 3: THE STEALTH OF A CAT, SAMSON STOLE GAZA'S MAIN FORM
- 5:08Speaker 3: OF PROTECTION AND ESCAPED INTO THE MOUNTAINS. Meanwhile, the Philistines
- 5:13Speaker 3: were planning their attack against Samson. The lords of the
- 5:17Speaker 3: Philistines plotted and schemed as to how they would topple
- 5:21Speaker 3: the mighty man of God. Clearly no army, large or small,
- 5:25Speaker 3: could come up against him, and they knew no other
- 5:28Speaker 3: way to bring him to his knees. They did, however,
- 5:31Speaker 3: know of one weakness Samson had, a weakness for beautiful women.
- 5:36Speaker 3: They sent for a woman named Delilah and paid her
- 5:39Speaker 3: 1,100 pieces of silver to seduce him. She came to
- 5:45Speaker 3: Samson with smooth lips and a sharp tongue. She stroked
- 5:49Speaker 3: his hair and kissed his neck. Samson, in an instant,
- 5:53Speaker 3: fell deeply in love with Delilah. Her seductive voice and
- 5:57Speaker 3: clever words lured Samson into a daze of passion and vulnerability.
- 6:02Speaker 3: She whispered in Samson's ear, Where does your strength Truly lie,
- 6:08Speaker 3: she leaned against him. Samson could smell her hair. She
- 6:12Speaker 3: was intoxicating to him. How would anyone be able to
- 6:16Speaker 3: capture you? Samson was enraptured by her, but still in
- 6:20Speaker 3: his right mind to toy with her. Samson answered her
- 6:24Speaker 3: and said, The secret is seven fresh bowstrings that have
- 6:28Speaker 3: not been dried. Once they bind me, I become weak
- 6:32Speaker 3: like any other man. So Delilah playfully bound Samson up
- 6:37Speaker 3: while the Philistines lay in secret, waiting to ambush him.
- 6:41Speaker 3: Then Delilah tested the strings and yelled, Quick, Samson! The
- 6:45Speaker 3: Philistines are coming! And in an instant Samson broke through
- 6:49Speaker 3: the strings ready for battle. So the secrets of Samson's
- 6:53Speaker 3: strength were still a mystery. Delilah was upset with Samson,
- 6:58Speaker 3: but Samson continued to toy with her. Three times she
- 7:01Speaker 3: bound him, and three times he escaped. for he thought
- 7:05Speaker 3: they were playing as lovers do. But Delilah only loved
- 7:09Speaker 3: one thing, silver, and she would not receive it unless
- 7:14Speaker 3: Samson was captured. Delilah wept in front of him, saying,
- 7:18Speaker 3: How could you tell me you love me when your
- 7:20Speaker 3: heart does not trust me? She cried, yelled, and pressed
- 7:24Speaker 3: up against him and begged. Day after day she wore
- 7:27Speaker 3: him down. And Samson became vexed beyond all reason. All
- 7:31Speaker 3: of Samson's inhibitions melted like candle wax against Delilah's flame.
- 7:37Speaker 3: So he told her the source of his strength. I
- 7:40Speaker 3: am a Nazarite by birth. A razor has never shaved
- 7:44Speaker 3: my head, and if it did, my strength would leave me.
- 7:48Speaker 3: Delilah was satisfied. In the secrecy of night, she had
- 7:53Speaker 3: Samson rest on her lap. She stroked his hair as
- 7:56Speaker 3: Samson fell into a deep sleep. Delilah smiled as she
- 8:00Speaker 3: looked at Samson, although she did not smile out of
- 8:03Speaker 3: affection or love for him. No, she smiled because the
- 8:07Speaker 3: Philistines were waiting just beyond the walls of her bedroom
- 8:11Speaker 3: with her silver. She nodded towards the door and a
- 8:15Speaker 3: man approached Samson with a blade in his hand. Together
- 8:18Speaker 3: they shaved off seven locks of hair from his head.
- 8:22Speaker 3: She tormented him, whispering lies and curses into his ears.
- 8:26Speaker 3: Then with a loud shriek she yelled, Samson, the Philistines
- 8:30Speaker 3: are here. The Philistines sprung onto Samson and tackled him
- 8:34Speaker 3: off the bed, onto the floor. Samson struggled, waiting for
- 8:38Speaker 3: a burst of strength to send the men flying through
- 8:41Speaker 3: the wall, but he had no strength. You see, Samson's
- 8:45Speaker 3: strength was not in his hair, but in the favor
- 8:48Speaker 3: of God. Samson had spent most of his adult life
- 8:52Speaker 3: straying from God, and he had now broken his last vow.
- 8:57Speaker 3: The Philistines bound him and pulled his head back. The
- 9:00Speaker 3: Philistine lords looked down at Samson with cackles. Samson looked
- 9:05Speaker 3: behind them as Delilah counted her silver. Tears streamed down
- 9:10Speaker 3: his face as he pulled and kicked in futility. Samson
- 9:14Speaker 3: looked at one of the men standing above him. He
- 9:17Speaker 3: turned to the fireplace and pulled out an iron rod.
- 9:20Speaker 3: Its tip was orange from the flames. He slowly approached
- 9:24Speaker 3: Samson and drove the tip of the rod into his eyes.
- 9:29Speaker 3: Samson wailed in pain and his screams woke up the
- 9:32Speaker 3: entire city. The men drug him out of the house
- 9:35Speaker 3: and shackled him to the wall of the Philistine temple.
- 9:39Speaker 3: Samson knelt in total darkness. Weakness was new to him
- 9:43Speaker 3: and he yelled in pain through the night. The lords
- 9:46Speaker 3: of the Philistines gathered together at the temple to make
- 9:49Speaker 3: sacrifices to their gods, Dagon. Together, 3,000 Philistines gathered to
- 9:55Speaker 3: celebrate the capture of Samson. They drank, danced, and reveled.
- 10:00Speaker 3: in victory. The fire raged in the center of the
- 10:03Speaker 3: large hall, and Samson could hear the snickering of Philistines
- 10:06Speaker 3: passing by him. The Philistines called for Samson to be
- 10:10Speaker 3: chained in the middle of the great hall to entertain
- 10:13Speaker 3: the guests. Their hearts were merry and drunk. And they
- 10:17Speaker 3: laughed at Samson and threw things at him as he
- 10:20Speaker 3: was being brought to the center of the temple. They
- 10:23Speaker 3: chained him between two pillars that held up the temple
- 10:26Speaker 3: roof and all three thousand men and women mocked him.
- 10:30Speaker 3: The music grew louder and they worshipped Dagon into the
- 10:34Speaker 3: middle of the night. Samson was lost in his thoughts.
- 10:38Speaker 3: He was supposed to be the deliverer of Israel and
- 10:41Speaker 3: here he stood blind and bound. It was not the
- 10:45Speaker 3: Philistines that trapped him there but his own pride and
- 10:48Speaker 3: lack of obedience to God. Samson raised his head to heaven,
- 10:53Speaker 3: unable to see. He took a deep breath. Oh, Lord,
- 10:58Speaker 3: he shouted, remember me and strengthen me just this once.
- 11:03Speaker 3: And then Samson began to pull on his chains that
- 11:06Speaker 3: were attached to the two pillars. The Philistines noticed and laughed.
- 11:11Speaker 3: Samson continued, and small cracks began to form around the
- 11:15Speaker 3: foundation of the pillars. Samson screamed as he tore at
- 11:19Speaker 3: the pillars. The Philistines' smiles began to fade, and Samson
- 11:24Speaker 3: whispered to himself, Let me die with the Philistines. And
- 11:28Speaker 3: in that moment he bowed with all his strength and
- 11:31Speaker 3: pulled the pillars apart. The entire temple floor fell from
- 11:35Speaker 3: the sky, and the walls toppled on top of all
- 11:38Speaker 3: 3,000 Philistines below. Flames erupted from the center of the
- 11:43Speaker 3: temple towering, as stones crushed the backs of God's enemies.
- 11:48Speaker 3: A cloud of smoke covered the wreckage. Dawn had broke,
- 11:52Speaker 3: and the sunrise peaked above the hills. In the middle
- 11:56Speaker 3: of the wreckage, among the bodies of the Philistines, lay
- 12:00Speaker 3: Samson's dead body. In that moment, Samson accomplished more in
- 12:05Speaker 3: death than he ever could during his life. The strongest
- 12:09Speaker 3: hero Israel had ever known experienced more victory and sacrifice
- 12:14Speaker 3: than he did selfishness. The story of courageous self-sacrifice would
- 12:20Speaker 3: be perfected later on in another hero God sent. His
- 12:24Speaker 3: sacrifice would topple the greatest enemy of them all.
- 12:32Speaker 2: Our reading begins with Samson giving in to the cravings
- 12:35Speaker 2: of his flesh. This Nazarite man, born with such promise
- 12:39Speaker 2: and set apart for God, was anything but holy and
- 12:41Speaker 2: separated as he wandered into Gaza. Samson made arrangements with
- 12:46Speaker 2: a prostitute and took her to bed to satisfy his lust.
- 12:51Speaker 2: His sin was not hidden either because word got out
- 12:54Speaker 2: about the Hebrew strongman and hero in the Philistine city.
- 12:58Speaker 2: It was the chance they'd been waiting for to defeat
- 13:00Speaker 2: the one man that stood between them in total dominance
- 13:03Speaker 2: over Israel. But Samson snuck out under the cover of night,
- 13:08Speaker 2: taking with him the whole city gate, which he ripped
- 13:11Speaker 2: from the ground. The Philistines' attempt to defeat Samson had
- 13:14Speaker 2: been thwarted again. But it wouldn't take long before an
- 13:19Speaker 2: even better opportunity arose for the Philistines. Samson became enamored
- 13:24Speaker 2: with another Philistine woman named Delilah, and she was troubled
- 13:28Speaker 2: with a capital T. Delilah captivated Samson, and the leaders
- 13:33Speaker 2: of the Philistines saw their chance to pounce. They summoned
- 13:36Speaker 2: Delilah and paid her to seduce Samson and get him
- 13:39Speaker 2: to give up the secret to his strength. They knew
- 13:42Speaker 2: that without his might, Samson was just another man, easily defeated.
- 13:46Speaker 2: Delilah happily obliged, her eyes on a prize of silver,
- 13:50Speaker 2: a payoff. So she asked him how he could be defeated.
- 13:55Speaker 2: How could he be subdued? What is the source of
- 13:58Speaker 2: his strength? Now Samson was not completely stupid. He wouldn't
- 14:03Speaker 2: give up his secret easily, but he can still have
- 14:05Speaker 2: some fun. And we see how clever Samson can be,
- 14:08Speaker 2: and he no doubt knows it, pridefully thinking nobody can
- 14:12Speaker 2: get the better of him. No wonder the Bible tells
- 14:15Speaker 2: us that pride comes before a fall. Three times he
- 14:19Speaker 2: gives her a wrong answer, and each time she tries
- 14:22Speaker 2: and fails to subdue him. Finally, she tells him if
- 14:25Speaker 2: he loves her, he will tell her his secret. Tragically,
- 14:29Speaker 2: Samson reveals that his head must never be shaved. That
- 14:33Speaker 2: very night, his head was shaved, and with the breaking
- 14:35Speaker 2: of the Nazarite vows, God's favor departed along with his strength.
- 14:40Speaker 2: For the first time ever, he was powerless, but not
- 14:42Speaker 2: because of his hair, but because of his broken relationship
- 14:46Speaker 2: with God. The Philistines bound Samson, mocked him, and gouged
- 14:50Speaker 2: out his eyes. Blind and bound, Samson was imprisoned and
- 14:55Speaker 2: made to turn at a millstone over and over. Here
- 14:59Speaker 2: we see the blinding and the grinding power of sin.
- 15:03Speaker 2: He could hear his captors worshiping their god, Dagon. Not
- 15:07Speaker 2: only were they mocking Samson, but mocking the god who
- 15:11Speaker 2: gave him his strength. Samson's physical blindness and bondage were
- 15:16Speaker 2: a direct consequence of his spiritual blindness and bondage to
- 15:19Speaker 2: sin that had put him in this terrible place. And
- 15:22Speaker 2: as he turned the mill, Samson must have talked to
- 15:25Speaker 2: God and seek forgiveness for his sin. His hair began
- 15:30Speaker 2: to grow back. It became, again, an outward sign of
- 15:33Speaker 2: an inner renewal of his faith in God. So when
- 15:37Speaker 2: Samson is paraded into the center of the temple to
- 15:40Speaker 2: be mocked, he asks to lean on the columns, and
- 15:42Speaker 2: then he cries out to God in Judges 16, 28,
- 15:46Speaker 2: O Lord God, please remember me, and please strengthen me
- 15:50Speaker 2: only this once, O God, that I may be avenged
- 15:53Speaker 2: on the Philistines for my two eyes. He prays for
- 15:56Speaker 2: one more opportunity to glorify God. God filled Samson once
- 16:01Speaker 2: more with superhuman strength and he pulled down the pillars,
- 16:04Speaker 2: destroying the pagan temple and killing 3,000 Philistines. Samson sacrificed
- 16:10Speaker 2: his own life to defeat the enemy. It is a
- 16:13Speaker 2: powerful story of renewed faith and repentance. And no matter
- 16:17Speaker 2: how far we may have fallen, God will pick us
- 16:20Speaker 2: up if we trust in him and once again find
- 16:23Speaker 2: our strength to go forward. Dear Lord, we thank you
- 16:27Speaker 2: for your forgiveness. We know, like Samson, we have failed
- 16:31Speaker 2: you many times. But we also know that when we
- 16:34Speaker 2: trust in you and revive our hearts in you, through
- 16:37Speaker 2: repentance and faith, we can be restored. God, restore our
- 16:42Speaker 2: hearts in you, and may we repent of every sin
- 16:45Speaker 2: that we may stand strongly for you. In Jesus' name, amen.
