- 0:47This is Gracelyn Keller with the Becker's Healthcare
- 0:50podcast, and we are live at the 2024
- 0:52payer issues roundtable.
- 0:54I'm currently joined by doctor Daniel Beckles, who's
- 0:56a surgeon at Ochsner Health. So doctor Beckles,
- 0:59thank you for joining me today. Let's start
- 1:01our conversation by having you introduce yourself and
- 1:03tell us a little bit about your role.
- 1:05Absolutely. Good morning, and, you know, thanks for
- 1:07having me here. I'm doctor Daniel Beckles,
- 1:09a cardiothoracic surgeon employed at Ochsner Health in
- 1:12Louisiana.
- 1:13I am director of cardiac
- 1:15cardiothoracic surgery services
- 1:17in CHRISTUS Health, St. Pat's Hospital in Lake
- 1:20Charles.
- 1:22Wonderful. Well, thank you for taking the time
- 1:24to be here. And let's start our conversation
- 1:26talking about priorities.
- 1:27So from improving member experience
- 1:30and expanding value based care to controlling costs,
- 1:33payer executives have ambitious growth goals for the
- 1:36rest of 2024 and the new year ahead.
- 1:39So in your role, what is your top
- 1:40priority and how are you planning to get
- 1:42there?
- 1:44My top priority is
- 1:45delivering value based care to our community
- 1:48and beyond.
- 1:50And so by using
- 1:52and improving
- 1:53our own
- 1:54outcomes data,
- 1:55we're able to do a root cause analysis
- 1:59of a lot of these metrics that already
- 2:01benchmark
- 2:02nationally
- 2:03and really come up with new processes
- 2:06and structures of how to improve quality
- 2:09and thereby decrease cost.
- 2:11Absolutely. And going off of that, at an
- 2:13industry level, how would you describe the biggest
- 2:16barriers to effectively serving and engaging members? And
- 2:20what opportunities
- 2:21do you see for large scale improvements?
- 2:23And how are you applying those in your
- 2:25current strategies?
- 2:26I think the biggest
- 2:28barriers we see now is really, you know,
- 2:30lifestyle choices
- 2:32of a lot of, you know, our members.
- 2:34And I think, you know, we just have
- 2:36to put use what other industries are using.
- 2:38We just have to put incentives on it,
- 2:40you know, to incentivize
- 2:42better choices. It's really that simple. And how
- 2:44we go about that is gonna be very
- 2:46innovative moving ahead.
- 2:48Wonderful. And switching gears a little bit toward
- 2:51growing leaders.
- 2:52Keeping pace in today's dynamic health care landscape
- 2:56is challenging.
- 2:57So what is one piece of advice you'd
- 2:59share with peer leaders to grow their businesses
- 3:01while keeping members top of mind?
- 3:04I think we have to focus
- 3:06on people. I think we really have to
- 3:08take care of our own people and the
- 3:10people that we work with, the people that
- 3:12are around us. I think if we just
- 3:14start just start there,
- 3:16start by really looking at their
- 3:19at their health and how we can improve,
- 3:21you know, one person at a time. But
- 3:22starting really
- 3:24at the people level, really what they want,
- 3:26and and just
- 3:27provided them with much better choices
- 3:30to live a more happier and healthier lifestyle.
- 3:33And as we wrap our conversation today, is
- 3:35there any closing words you'd like to share
- 3:36on the podcast?
- 3:38No. I think this is these are really
- 3:40exciting times, you know, in health care.
- 3:42We have so much data. A lot of
- 3:44hospitals
- 3:45and industry have so much data today. What
- 3:47we do with that data, I think, is
- 3:48very important
- 3:49moving forward where we can use it in
- 3:51a very constructive way to really improve health
- 3:54overall.
- 3:55So thanks for having me. Wonderful. Well, thank
- 3:58you for being here. Again, we're live at
- 4:00the 2024 Payer Issues Roundtable.
