- 0:00Speaker 1: The hour back the iHeart Music clowns here in Hartford.
- 0:05Speaker 1: Dan Hurley with US yukon basketball, the subject we're getting
- 0:09Speaker 1: through the roster.
- 0:10Speaker 2: I did mention in the break there Jacob Purfy. Uh
- 0:13Speaker 2: he comes from Tasmania. I looked it up. It's an
- 0:15Speaker 2: island that is part of Australia. I did not know that.
- 0:19Speaker 2: So why did you find a guy like that? Because
- 0:21Speaker 2: now we're going international here?
- 0:23Speaker 3: Yeah, So Luke Luke is you know, Luke does a
- 0:27Speaker 3: lot of international and Luke has a pretty trusted uh
- 0:32Speaker 3: you know scout that he uh, that he believes in
- 0:36Speaker 3: that gave him a heads up on Furf. Just felt
- 0:39Speaker 3: like he was a fit for the way we played
- 0:41Speaker 3: and that he said. I mean, there's a lot of
- 0:44Speaker 3: stories anytime you deal with Tom Moore and Luke Murray,
- 0:47Speaker 3: there's a lot of he said, he said or whatever.
- 0:49Speaker 3: So the story is that I guess that Luke sent
- 0:52Speaker 3: Tom to see him and Tom said he sucked.
- 0:57Speaker 4: But yeah, now, and.
- 1:01Speaker 3: But the kid played great when Tom was there, and
- 1:04Speaker 3: Luke had the video of it. Oh really, So he
- 1:06Speaker 3: said basically, hey, Tom, you know I got the video
- 1:09Speaker 3: of this. What what are you talking about? This kid
- 1:11Speaker 3: just had twenty some points, eight assists, seven rebounds, three steals.
- 1:16Speaker 3: I was the best player in the event. Oh yeah, yeah,
- 1:19Speaker 3: oh the end, No, I did it. I liked him
- 1:23Speaker 3: so so you just to look at the video and
- 1:26Speaker 3: what's that?
- 1:27Speaker 4: So you looked at the film. No, so Luke saw
- 1:29Speaker 4: the video.
- 1:29Speaker 3: Because I think that, like Tom's initial evaluation was like
- 1:33Speaker 3: he's a no go, and then Luke didn't let it
- 1:36Speaker 3: just die there. This is the story as I understand it,
- 1:40Speaker 3: relative too to Luke. Right, Tom Moore, you know, they
- 1:45Speaker 3: have his own story about it. But then we brought
- 1:48Speaker 3: him in on a visit and you watch more film
- 1:52Speaker 3: and then you know, ended up loving him on the visit.
- 1:55Speaker 3: Just buy into the human being. You spend time around
- 1:57Speaker 3: the human being. Yeah, and you're just you're blown away
- 2:00Speaker 3: by the kid because he's just he's got great makeup,
- 2:02Speaker 3: he's smart, kind of carries himself like an adult, and
- 2:06Speaker 3: he's like, you know, he's like a young Cam Spencer.
- 2:09Speaker 3: He's probably what Cam looked like when Cam was like
- 2:12Speaker 3: a sophomore maybe junior at Loyola Maryland.
- 2:16Speaker 2: You know, and look what he turned out to be
- 2:19Speaker 2: and he turned out good. Yeah, the Grizzlies kind of
- 2:21Speaker 2: liked him. They gave him two years, yeah, a nice,
- 2:24Speaker 2: nice paycheck.
- 2:24Speaker 4: And then that's you know again they just who wouldn't
- 2:27Speaker 4: want someone like that?
- 2:28Speaker 2: And you in your organization, right, all right, the guy's
- 2:30Speaker 2: coming back. Well, first of all, I want to mention
- 2:32Speaker 2: two guys. Dwayne Coromo came out of iona Alec Millander
- 2:36Speaker 2: IU in Indy. They played something against Boston College. Yeah,
- 2:39Speaker 2: they were like, I don't want to use the word service.
- 2:41Speaker 2: Well that's a bad word, but they look like they
- 2:43Speaker 2: can play. Now we could play them. I mean they
- 2:45Speaker 2: could you know.
- 2:46Speaker 3: Uh, these guys have been awesome and they're veterans. I
- 2:51Speaker 3: mean Dwayne actually, if you look at Dwayne stats in
- 2:54Speaker 3: high major games last year like at Notre Dame, at
- 2:57Speaker 3: Syracuse and then the game against Yukon, like he average
- 3:00Speaker 3: probably like seventeen points, you know, seven or eight rebounds,
- 3:04Speaker 3: couple of steels hanging on, you know, dunking, playing above
- 3:07Speaker 3: the rim. So yeah, I mean as a third center
- 3:10Speaker 3: and a guy that we could play a movement complement
- 3:13Speaker 3: to the seven footer and then you know the like
- 3:16Speaker 3: the big physical, you know guy, the taris is just
- 3:19Speaker 3: having a third again, different skill sets, different abilities, a
- 3:23Speaker 3: different type of center gives your team a different look
- 3:26Speaker 3: at times. And Alec, Yeah, I mean that Alec is
- 3:28Speaker 3: a good player. You know, he's he's gonna put pressure
- 3:32Speaker 3: on people to play well to keep him off the court.
- 3:36Speaker 3: And you know, I know he once to get into broadcasting,
- 3:39Speaker 3: but I think he's got like future coach written all over.
- 3:42Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 3:42Speaker 2: Well, you like guys who can push people right on
- 3:45Speaker 2: your own roster. That's helpful because your practice, you know,
- 3:48Speaker 2: three four times a week, you want guys pushing other guys.
- 3:51Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean your whole organization should be people pushing
- 3:54Speaker 3: each other. The staff should be pushing each other to
- 3:57Speaker 3: be better. The players should be pushing each other to
- 3:59Speaker 3: get better. I'm doing a lot of pushing, not physically,
- 4:04Speaker 3: not pushing. Well, no, no, just Andrew because he's still
- 4:10Speaker 3: still he's still pushing him around. Huh.
- 4:12Speaker 2: The guys that came back, which I was a little surprised,
- 4:15Speaker 2: I gotta admit, Jayden Ross, Jalen Stewart, you know, they
- 4:18Speaker 2: played kind of minimal minutes but some meaningful minutes last
- 4:22Speaker 2: year and they came back strong. It looks like, so
- 4:26Speaker 2: what went on there? How much did you have to say?
- 4:29Speaker 2: You know, convince them and how much was going on
- 4:31Speaker 2: before they came back.
- 4:32Speaker 3: I mean with with with Jalen Solo zero, you know,
- 4:38Speaker 3: like neither guy. Yeah, I mean, I would say with
- 4:40Speaker 3: the rest of the players, there were conversations, you know,
- 4:43Speaker 3: there were obviously Alex had to go through his draft process,
- 4:48Speaker 3: you know, and then obviously you're then having conversations with
- 4:52Speaker 3: you know, with Jayden Ross and Taris Reid, and you know,
- 4:56Speaker 3: kind of talking about what you envisioned because you know,
- 4:58Speaker 3: one guy was a backup center, you know, and the
- 5:01Speaker 3: other guy, you know, Jade Ross didn't play as much
- 5:05Speaker 3: as I thought he would or as much as as
- 5:07Speaker 3: he hoped for, But we didn't want to lose you know,
- 5:10Speaker 3: either player. We felt like, you know, Taris, you know,
- 5:14Speaker 3: with another summer work and another preseason with with his
- 5:19Speaker 3: level of efficiency, if we could you know, double his
- 5:23Speaker 3: you know, if we can get him to thirty minutes
- 5:25Speaker 3: a game, he could be an All American level center.
- 5:28Speaker 3: And then you know, with Jayden Ross, it's just if
- 5:30Speaker 3: you see the things that go on in practice, NBA
- 5:34Speaker 3: scouts in the preseason last year thinking, you know, he's
- 5:37Speaker 3: our best NBA prospect because you know, the things he's
- 5:41Speaker 3: able to do athletically at his size. You know, for him,
- 5:44Speaker 3: it's all about trying to take from the practice floor
- 5:47Speaker 3: onto the court and be able to perform under the
- 5:50Speaker 3: bright lights.
- 5:51Speaker 4: You know, so most of you know, what Jay Ross is.
- 5:54Speaker 3: The only way is like, you know, mental confidence, because
- 5:57Speaker 3: this guy's got you know, he's got a draft pick
- 6:00Speaker 3: level talent that he's just got to be able to
- 6:02Speaker 3: take onto game night.
- 6:03Speaker 2: Yeah, Alex Caravan our favorite obviously two rings fourth year,
- 6:10Speaker 2: you know, tried the NBA thing out having him back,
- 6:14Speaker 2: that's got to be huge.
- 6:16Speaker 4: What I think what.
- 6:16Speaker 3: Helped Alex a lot mentally was you know, I think
- 6:19Speaker 3: the NBA is he could only help himself by coming
- 6:23Speaker 3: back and playing this last year.
- 6:26Speaker 4: You know, he did.
- 6:27Speaker 3: You know, Alex wasn't you know, insulated with what he
- 6:31Speaker 3: had around him in twenty three and twenty four, and
- 6:35Speaker 3: he didn't have his you know, his his finest season,
- 6:39Speaker 3: but it absolutely had zero impact on his draft stock.
- 6:42Speaker 3: He still would have gone late twenties and would not
- 6:46Speaker 3: have gotten past thirty five. So I think hearing that
- 6:49Speaker 3: from NBA teams during the draft process kind of in
- 6:53Speaker 3: his mind said, like, you know, I wasn't anywhere near
- 6:58Speaker 3: what I'm capable of or my best. So there is
- 7:02Speaker 3: a lot of upside to coming back, you know, like
- 7:04Speaker 3: he can play his way into becoming, you know, a
- 7:07Speaker 3: first round pick, and he has a way of play.
- 7:10Speaker 4: He's got a chance to play his.
- 7:11Speaker 3: Way into being you know, the you know, the biggest
- 7:16Speaker 3: winner in college basketball in sixty years on the men's side,
- 7:20Speaker 3: like of any player that's played since those UCLA teams,
- 7:23Speaker 3: the guys on the team when they're you know, when
- 7:25Speaker 3: the group is healthy and everything around him is in place,
- 7:28Speaker 3: Like he got a chance to win three national championships
- 7:30Speaker 3: out of four years.
- 7:31Speaker 4: He could say, you know, I'm the most.
- 7:33Speaker 3: Decorated college basketball player in sixty years. Like that's what
- 7:36Speaker 3: that kid is coming back to school for now. You
- 7:38Speaker 3: won't see that a lot because he's not dancing around
- 7:41Speaker 3: on TikTok, you know, and painting his nails and trying
- 7:46Speaker 3: to just get attention. You know, he's just he's a
- 7:49Speaker 3: he's a ballplayer. You know, he's just he's you know,
- 7:52Speaker 3: he gets a three nine and computer engineering. He's like
- 7:56Speaker 3: a triple major. He graduated three years ago, three years
- 8:01Speaker 3: you know, the guy's just about it's just about all
- 8:03Speaker 3: the right things, and obviously the culture of sports now
- 8:06Speaker 3: is different. We celebrate athletes that want to be celebrities
- 8:10Speaker 3: and influencers, and he's a breath of fresh air because
- 8:14Speaker 3: I think, you know, I think fans at some point
- 8:17Speaker 3: are going to get tired of that and want it
- 8:20Speaker 3: back the way it was when players weren't as complicated
- 8:24Speaker 3: and they were just about winning championships for their fans
- 8:27Speaker 3: and their team.
- 8:28Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 8:28Speaker 2: He's the kind of guy that you look at and
- 8:30Speaker 2: you say, man, I wish he was on our team
- 8:32Speaker 2: if he's not on your team.
- 8:33Speaker 3: Yeah, I heard Coolly yesterday at the Big East Big
- 8:38Speaker 3: East Media Day was yelling at him, I'll give you
- 8:41Speaker 3: a million dollars.
- 8:43Speaker 4: To not play this year. So cool, he's crazy. All right,
- 8:48Speaker 4: we'll be back. We got to talk solo ball. We
- 8:50Speaker 4: got a few other things to talk about.
- 8:52Speaker 1: Dan Hurley's here on the Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show
- 8:55Speaker 1: from lear Field.
