- 0:21Speaker 1: Our thanks to Chris Sims for joining us in the
- 0:23Speaker 1: first hour. Tim Legler will join us as an encore
- 0:28Speaker 1: for today on stugatsa company Israel. Goody Eras is with
- 0:30Speaker 1: us right now. Congratulations to you is real goody Eras.
- 0:34Speaker 1: I mean he's normally with us. He just hasn't been
- 0:35Speaker 1: here all week. Look, congratulations. Do you want the new pod?
- 0:39Speaker 1: I mean, how about that?
- 0:42Speaker 2: Let me strain some things out. I'm not double dipping
- 0:46Speaker 2: over here. I am not double dating, that's for sure.
- 0:49Speaker 2: That was all last year. We recorded everything on Lebron
- 0:53Speaker 2: the Lot. You recorded everything last year while I was
- 0:58Speaker 2: still with meadow Lark, and they just decided to release
- 1:01Speaker 2: it now that Lebron got knocked out, and you know,
- 1:04Speaker 2: it seemed like a good time. So yeah, there you go.
- 1:06Speaker 2: Not new, not back at meadow Lark, but it's gonna
- 1:09Speaker 2: be good. So is he.
- 1:11Speaker 3: I was fielding a bunch of questions when I see
- 1:14Speaker 3: that podcast goes out. People are texting me, Hey, was
- 1:17Speaker 3: is he still with you?
- 1:17Speaker 1: Guys?
- 1:18Speaker 3: Is everything okay?
- 1:19Speaker 1: Now?
- 1:20Speaker 3: I'm sitting here wondering are there any unreleased Pitch Clock
- 1:23Speaker 3: episodes that I.
- 1:24Speaker 2: Think that might be quite possible. Jeremy works hard.
- 1:30Speaker 1: Now I'm thinking, what's the name of your podcast?
- 1:35Speaker 2: Is he the step Back? I mean, ah, the step Back?
- 1:39Speaker 1: What a great name for a new pod. It really is.
- 1:41Speaker 1: So you got it. He got a basketball pod done
- 1:43Speaker 1: from Metal Lark, and I'm still waiting on you to
- 1:44Speaker 1: get one done here.
- 1:45Speaker 4: I mean, hold on a second, the step back and
- 1:48Speaker 4: you recorded it a year ago.
- 1:49Speaker 2: That's step way back. Yeah, that's the step back. That's
- 1:54Speaker 2: a little extra step. Yep.
- 1:56Speaker 1: Speaking of James Harden, he's been pretty good since you
- 1:59Speaker 1: ripped a Lonk Coward show.
- 2:02Speaker 2: That's right, that was on the Herd. Here's the thing
- 2:05Speaker 2: with James Harden. Yes, you can be good every once
- 2:10Speaker 2: in a while and we can say good job being good,
- 2:13Speaker 2: but when you're god awful two thirds of the time,
- 2:17Speaker 2: that balance is off. As not a star, not somebody
- 2:21Speaker 2: you can rely on. So please don't come championing him,
- 2:24Speaker 2: not you, but people championing him when he's had a
- 2:27Speaker 2: couple maybe two or three games back to back, when
- 2:29Speaker 2: those four out of five games before that were just
- 2:33Speaker 2: god awful, like not even star level, not even average
- 2:36Speaker 2: player level, just terrible.
- 2:38Speaker 3: And if this playoffs hold serve, the Cavs are zero
- 2:41Speaker 3: and five away from home, away from Cleveland in this playoffs,
- 2:46Speaker 3: if this keeps going, Game seven is going to be
- 2:49Speaker 3: in Detroit and they're most likely going.
- 2:50Speaker 2: Home, which means they will have gone the entire playoffs
- 2:54Speaker 2: without their series ever starting.
- 2:56Speaker 1: Ever, I don't think any team's ever done that in
- 2:58Speaker 1: NBA history. I mean, it would be so well rested.
- 3:03Speaker 2: It's like you play two series, but you don't actually
- 3:05Speaker 2: play anything.
- 3:06Speaker 1: Telor you know what, that series has written all over it?
- 3:09Speaker 3: What's up?
- 3:11Speaker 1: Game seven? It has Game seven written all over it?
- 3:14Speaker 1: It does, does it not? And then the mixer just
- 3:18Speaker 1: waiting around? I love that. Is there anything better than
- 3:20Speaker 1: waiting around for your next opponent? I mean, we never
- 3:22Speaker 1: whatever afforded that tailor, and now we're just resting, getting
- 3:26Speaker 1: healthy and waiting around for one of two teams I
- 3:28Speaker 1: think we could beat.
- 3:29Speaker 2: This is a great, great point by Stu. Gott's like,
- 3:32Speaker 2: you guys have been You guys meaning Knicks fans have
- 3:34Speaker 2: been on a roller coaster all season long. Mike Brown,
- 3:37Speaker 2: Oh no, he's going to be terrible. Oh what can
- 3:39Speaker 2: we kind of like him? Oh no? First round of
- 3:41Speaker 2: the playoffs We're gonna lose to the Hawks. Oh no,
- 3:43Speaker 2: we're actually great. And now you're sitting back thinking like
- 3:47Speaker 2: you're the class of the East, thinking wow, that James
- 3:50Speaker 2: Dolan really knows what he's doing by firing, uh, firing
- 3:54Speaker 2: Tims and hiring this Mike Brown guy.
- 3:57Speaker 1: Well, Brown has four games to go in order for
- 4:00Speaker 1: them to justify the fir ring of Tom Thibodeaux. He's
- 4:02Speaker 1: got to win four months, Yes, four wins to go
- 4:06Speaker 1: for them to justify the firing of Tom Thibodeau.
- 4:09Speaker 2: Speaking of firing, Yes, this microphone you're working with, it
- 4:12Speaker 2: looks like it's on fire. It looks like you're giving
- 4:15Speaker 2: that you're lighting up the microphone.
- 4:17Speaker 1: I think we should use this. I think I got
- 4:20Speaker 1: to use this moving forward because you're right, Yes, when
- 4:23Speaker 1: I give hot takes. But it should only light up
- 4:25Speaker 1: when I'm giving the hot take.
- 4:26Speaker 2: It's like a mood ring for microphones. It's a mood mic.
- 4:30Speaker 1: It's a gaming mic. That's what it is. I mean, yes, Uh,
- 4:34Speaker 1: step back wherever you get your podcasts.
- 4:40Speaker 2: Well, that's so funny.
- 4:41Speaker 1: Should I be mad? I don't know how does this work?
- 4:44Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 4:44Speaker 2: You should go back in time and be mad at
- 4:46Speaker 2: me a year ago?
- 4:47Speaker 1: Okay, why so long for the release, though, I mean,
- 4:50Speaker 1: what happens you're in.
- 4:52Speaker 2: Your guess is as good as mine. Man, I don't know.
- 4:54Speaker 1: All right, Taylor has a question for you, Okay, she related,
- 4:57Speaker 1: I know you have a bevy of fun topics for
- 4:59Speaker 1: us get to and we will do that in a second.
- 5:02Speaker 1: We have a group chat here. I is he sets
- 5:04Speaker 1: his topics three of them. We haven't spoken to him
- 5:07Speaker 1: in a couple of days. Mikey wrote back, sounds like
- 5:09Speaker 1: fun about it?
- 5:15Speaker 2: Now we can't.
- 5:16Speaker 1: It's the holy trifecta of depressing topics. But first, Taylor
- 5:20Speaker 1: has a questioned for Israel goody eras about Oklahoma City.
- 5:23Speaker 2: By the way, topic number three was the Spurge. So
- 5:25Speaker 2: if you can't that's depressing.
- 5:27Speaker 1: Well they are depressing. I'm talking about.
- 5:29Speaker 3: Yeah, so is he. I was watching the Thunder make
- 5:32Speaker 3: pretty quick work of the Lakers. They sweep them in
- 5:36Speaker 3: four games. They do it without Jalen Williams, and I
- 5:39Speaker 3: feel like this is going to be an unpopular opinion,
- 5:41Speaker 3: but I wanted to get your thoughts on.
- 5:43Speaker 1: It is Jalen.
- 5:45Speaker 3: Williams expandable for this Thunder team because you're watching what
- 5:49Speaker 3: aj Mitchell has done for them. He's on a three year,
- 5:52Speaker 3: eight point seven million dollar deal, and if you move
- 5:56Speaker 3: on from Jalen Williams, you can kind of reset your
- 6:00Speaker 3: your championship window. But it would kind of be unprecedented
- 6:03Speaker 3: because the thunder seemingly are in the championship window.
- 6:08Speaker 2: I'm gonna need you to repeat the crux of the
- 6:11Speaker 2: question because he lost me on one vowel.
- 6:14Speaker 1: And this is so fast.
- 6:15Speaker 2: This is a friendly correction. Okay, expendable, expendable Talen Williams
- 6:22Speaker 2: big I heard it too, Jalen Williams bigger. That would
- 6:26Speaker 2: he'd be a keeper. But no, Look, here's what I
- 6:29Speaker 2: thought about Jalen Williams. I thought he'd be a one
- 6:32Speaker 2: time All Star for his career. Uh that was sort
- 6:34Speaker 2: of a perfect storms. As the running mate to Shay
- 6:37Speaker 2: as the best team in the league last year and
- 6:39Speaker 2: him having a great year. I thought he was, you know,
- 6:41Speaker 2: that type of player that when everything comes together, he
- 6:44Speaker 2: can be an All Star. Will he be again? Who knows?
- 6:47Speaker 2: But yes, I one hundred percent think he's expendable. In fact,
- 6:50Speaker 2: that's kind of the model. It's Hey, this is our
- 6:53Speaker 2: super duper star in the middle because we have so
- 6:56Speaker 2: many assets, many of these guys are going to hit,
- 6:59Speaker 2: you know, because we have confidence in ourselves. We believe
- 7:02Speaker 2: we can find the right guys. And so yeah, I
- 7:04Speaker 2: mean they've been doing it all this year period. With
- 7:06Speaker 2: Jaln Williams. How many games did he missed this year is?
- 7:08Speaker 2: I feel like it was at least half the season.
- 7:11Speaker 2: It might not have been that much, but and they
- 7:12Speaker 2: were still fantastic. They were still the number one seed.
- 7:15Speaker 2: So yes, he is one hundred percent expendable. And I
- 7:18Speaker 2: do think that if they find, you know, wherever they're drafting,
- 7:22Speaker 2: I know it's in the lottery, but if they find
- 7:24Speaker 2: a player that they think is as good or potentially better,
- 7:28Speaker 2: you can see them starting to give him more responsibilities
- 7:30Speaker 2: that young players starting next year, especially if they repeat
- 7:33Speaker 2: where they're probably going to treat the first half of
- 7:35Speaker 2: the season like, hey, let's just get everybody ready for
- 7:37Speaker 2: the playoffs.
- 7:38Speaker 3: So Stu, since he's expendable now and we've established that,
- 7:41Speaker 3: that leads round to the next game. Who says no,
- 7:45Speaker 3: I have I have a projected trade that I came
- 7:48Speaker 3: up with. You tell me who says no, Who's getting
- 7:51Speaker 3: a better deal? Okay, So the Thunder have picks twelve
- 7:55Speaker 3: and seventeen this year in the first round, which is
- 7:57Speaker 3: crazy for how for how good they are. But if
- 8:00Speaker 3: you're the Wizards and the Thunder call you and they
- 8:03Speaker 3: offer twelve and they'll take Jalen Williams for number one
- 8:08Speaker 3: in the draft, do you consider it?
- 8:11Speaker 1: Oh? Wow? I mean you have to consider it?
- 8:13Speaker 2: Right?
- 8:14Speaker 1: Well? Is it?
- 8:15Speaker 2: It depends on what you think of that number one talent, right,
- 8:18Speaker 2: So I've been.
- 8:20Speaker 1: How is the number one talent? It's the number one
- 8:22Speaker 1: talent worthy of something like that.
- 8:23Speaker 2: It depends on who you think that Like Aj Debonsa,
- 8:26Speaker 2: they say he is that type, right, Like, this isn't
- 8:29Speaker 2: his game. But when I think of like a classic
- 8:32Speaker 2: small forward who you can you know, plug in and
- 8:35Speaker 2: trust to score a bunch and probably play some decent defense.
- 8:38Speaker 2: I think of Paul Pierce, Like that's the type of
- 8:41Speaker 2: small forward like for you, for your franchise, for a
- 8:45Speaker 2: career that you would be getting in Aj Debonsa. It's
- 8:47Speaker 2: like probably gonna average twenty five twenty six points a
- 8:50Speaker 2: game in his peak, maybe a little higher. And like
- 8:53Speaker 2: I said, you know, physical body can do everything else.
- 8:56Speaker 2: But there's a lot of people that question, you know,
- 8:58Speaker 2: is he an offensive talent? Is you franchise player? His
- 9:02Speaker 2: jumper looked a little busted in the combine yesterday. I've
- 9:06Speaker 2: been bragging to Taylor since back in I don't know
- 9:09Speaker 2: how long ago, maybe November, that I love Caleb Wilson
- 9:12Speaker 2: as the number one pick, and now I'm getting a
- 9:13Speaker 2: lot of people jumping on that bandwagon with watching his
- 9:16Speaker 2: workouts and saying that he might be the guy in
- 9:19Speaker 2: this draft. So it just really depends on your thinking
- 9:22Speaker 2: on that, Stu. But I do think that most people
- 9:24Speaker 2: believe this is a great draft, that they have four
- 9:27Speaker 2: or five franchise players near the top. So if you
- 9:30Speaker 2: offer that trade, anybody with the number one pick is
- 9:32Speaker 2: going to have a little bit of pause. But you
- 9:34Speaker 2: got to think of the Wizards as a team that's
- 9:36Speaker 2: not young and up and coming. They're trying to turn immediately.
- 9:39Speaker 2: They got Trey Young and Anthony Davis that's not young,
- 9:42Speaker 2: so they might be willing to trade that number one
- 9:44Speaker 2: pick for the package that Taylor mentioned.
- 9:46Speaker 1: Yes, the only thing that's going to turn quickly is
- 9:48Speaker 1: Anthony Davis's ankle.
- 9:52Speaker 2: Nothing even has to turn over.
- 9:55Speaker 1: Thank you you like that, yes, and which Jalen Williams.
- 9:58Speaker 1: So we give it up in this trade, the one
- 9:59Speaker 1: that Simmons thinks he's still playing, or the one that's
- 10:01Speaker 1: actually playing.
- 10:02Speaker 2: The one then Simmons thinks it's still playing. Although if
- 10:04Speaker 2: Simmons was the GM Taylor, you could sneak in the
- 10:07Speaker 2: other Jaylor Williams and maybe get away.
- 10:09Speaker 1: We love Bill Simmons, we do. I mean he wrote
- 10:12Speaker 1: the book on basketball. Taylor loves a French, right. He
- 10:15Speaker 1: keeps couching every conversation.
- 10:18Speaker 2: Yeah, he's a friend of a friend for me, Billy
- 10:20Speaker 2: Gills friend. So he's my friend.
- 10:23Speaker 1: Well, he's my friend too. I think I don't know
- 10:24Speaker 1: he has it returned the call for a one time.
- 10:27Speaker 3: The enemy of my enemy is my friend.
- 10:30Speaker 2: Can I excuse me?
- 10:32Speaker 1: Okay, there you choked up?
- 10:33Speaker 2: Well, I mean, Taylor, Taylor mustn't just drop the funniest
- 10:36Speaker 2: joke of all the time because I can't stop laughing.
- 10:40Speaker 1: I'm hoping you laughed long enough where I don't have
- 10:43Speaker 1: to get to any of your depressing topics.
- 10:56Speaker 2: Well, let's go from Lee's depressing first, Wemby and the spurg.
- 10:59Speaker 1: Wait, hold on, so we're doing a metal stand. This
- 11:01Speaker 1: is the bronze medal of Isy's depressing topics for the day. Okay,
- 11:05Speaker 1: I like this, it's a new I like this has
- 11:08Speaker 1: a segment on the show. We just get all the
- 11:10Speaker 1: depression out in five minutes.
- 11:12Speaker 2: Let's go depressing. Topic of the bronze medal is the
- 11:16Speaker 2: San Antonio Spurs and their color scheme. It's it's a
- 11:19Speaker 2: little dumb. Okay, I'm not saying Stu. I love Wenby.
- 11:24Speaker 2: He's a freaking nature fun to watch sometimes, but I
- 11:28Speaker 2: don't think he's crazy. Like I think you get a
- 11:30Speaker 2: little tired of the you know, freaky, freaking nature guy
- 11:34Speaker 2: with the long arms and doing all this stuff. And
- 11:36Speaker 2: so I'm like, why is it that I don't love
- 11:39Speaker 2: watching them play? Like Dylan Harper is so good, Like
- 11:43Speaker 2: I want to watch highlights of that guy. Stefan Castle. Man,
- 11:46Speaker 2: he can drive and don't get any given time. That's
- 11:49Speaker 2: exactly what we want to see from Shay. But for
- 11:51Speaker 2: some reason, my eyes aren't glued to the screen when
- 11:55Speaker 2: I'm watching the Spurs and Stu. I think my reasoning
- 11:58Speaker 2: has to be very similar to your microphone. Frankly, need
- 12:02Speaker 2: some color in there, man, we need some Like when
- 12:04Speaker 2: they did the crowd and like it was the three
- 12:06Speaker 2: different colors like, Wow, my eyes were glued to that crowds.
- 12:09Speaker 2: Doud I was like, hey, look at that, there's colors
- 12:11Speaker 2: over there, and then on the court it's just black
- 12:13Speaker 2: and white and moving everywhere, and I'm just like, all right,
- 12:15Speaker 2: I think the Spurs need to introduce maybe some of
- 12:17Speaker 2: that color into their uniforms on the daily. Is that
- 12:19Speaker 2: Is that too depressing of a topic for you?
- 12:22Speaker 1: No, so listen, that's why it wins the bronze medal.
- 12:25Speaker 1: It can only get way more depressing from here. So
- 12:28Speaker 1: I agree with you on the Spurs. I agree with
- 12:30Speaker 1: you on the color scheme.
- 12:31Speaker 2: You're tired of watching Wenby play yet, because I'm a little.
- 12:33Speaker 1: Bored, I haven't watched Wenby play all that much.
- 12:35Speaker 2: I have to be honest with you. So I mean
- 12:38Speaker 2: you're glued to the NHL playoffs, you know.
- 12:39Speaker 1: I mean this. I gotta tell you, This Canadian Sabers
- 12:42Speaker 1: series is one of the all time great series. Man,
- 12:45Speaker 1: in all these hockey series, I'm telling they've been entertaining.
- 12:48Speaker 1: I am glued to the hockey. I am, yes, Taylor.
- 12:50Speaker 3: Is he My bigger problem with Wemby is not so
- 12:53Speaker 3: much that I'm bored by him, but my frustrations come
- 12:57Speaker 3: with It feels like the officials don't know how to
- 13:00Speaker 3: an officiate a game with wembin Yama because some of
- 13:03Speaker 3: his blocks are very clear goaltending, but he's so tall
- 13:08Speaker 3: that your default is just thinking he could get to everything.
- 13:11Speaker 2: By the way, speaking of the Jayleen Williams think AJ
- 13:13Speaker 2: Mitchell might already be there next All Star. Okay, he's
- 13:16Speaker 2: a guy that they've really just unleashed this year. So yeah,
- 13:20Speaker 2: just further ssh your point there, Taylor. But yes, there's
- 13:23Speaker 2: so much that is difficult to officiate with him. It's
- 13:26Speaker 2: not just the block shots. It's also he's got so
- 13:29Speaker 2: much arms and legs it's hard to tell when other
- 13:30Speaker 2: players run into it. Like I was joking to myself yesterday,
- 13:33Speaker 2: I was cracking myself up, joking to myself yesterday that
- 13:37Speaker 2: anybody can like swipe the ball out of his hands
- 13:39Speaker 2: because when he's posting up, his body's here, but the
- 13:42Speaker 2: balls all the way out there, so you can just
- 13:43Speaker 2: got to get an arm ount and swipe at it.
- 13:46Speaker 2: And there's a lot of times where he got hit
- 13:48Speaker 2: yesterday and I'm just like that it's gotta be a foul.
- 13:50Speaker 2: But the referees don't see it.
- 13:52Speaker 3: Did. We all have the same thought though that joking
- 13:54Speaker 3: with yourself kind of sounded sad.
- 13:57Speaker 2: Well, it's good you.
- 13:58Speaker 1: Did to tell them what's on the zoom was starting.
- 13:59Speaker 2: I mean, it's a sad existence watching me sports. It
- 14:06Speaker 2: really is.
- 14:06Speaker 1: All right, let's get to the silver medal of depressing topics.
- 14:10Speaker 1: That wasn't so depressing, is he?
- 14:11Speaker 2: That was? I think the silver and gold are kind
- 14:14Speaker 2: of it was visually depressed.
- 14:16Speaker 1: It was the next all right, go ahead, take it away,
- 14:20Speaker 1: silver medal here.
- 14:21Speaker 2: You know, I'm gonna in stert of in terms of sadness,
- 14:23Speaker 2: I'm gonna go silver medal. It's acknowledging. Jason Collins is passing.
- 14:28Speaker 2: You know, I think everybody knows the first openly gay
- 14:30Speaker 2: athlete to play in the NBA, I think in any
- 14:33Speaker 2: of the four major sports there. And I kind of
- 14:37Speaker 2: this is, you know, this is how the mind works.
- 14:39Speaker 2: Like I kind of came to terms with his passing
- 14:41Speaker 2: back when his diagnosis was announced a while back, and
- 14:44Speaker 2: it was stage four, stage four, but it was a
- 14:47Speaker 2: very advanced form of brain cancer, and it's just, you know,
- 14:50Speaker 2: tough to think about that. But of all people, right,
- 14:53Speaker 2: this guy's a superhero Man. The guy's gonna live forever,
- 14:55Speaker 2: like legends live forever, and this man's going to live forever.
- 14:58Speaker 2: But I'm curious from you guys, you're guys' perspective. Did
- 15:01Speaker 2: you think that it would open the door to more
- 15:05Speaker 2: gay athletes coming out, because really you have Carl Nassib
- 15:09Speaker 2: and that's about it when it comes to pros, and
- 15:12Speaker 2: Carl Nastib was very much, you know, just go about
- 15:15Speaker 2: his business and not really be in the news much,
- 15:18Speaker 2: and so just curious, did you think that that was
- 15:19Speaker 2: gonna happen or was this pretty much how you thought?
- 15:22Speaker 2: You know, it was just going to be like silence
- 15:23Speaker 2: for you know, the next decade plus.
- 15:26Speaker 1: I remember thinking how brave and how courageous he was
- 15:30Speaker 1: to come out and be the first openly gay NBA player.
- 15:34Speaker 1: I didn't think at the time that his name was
- 15:36Speaker 1: big enough for it to kind of enhance or like
- 15:39Speaker 1: a dom help more people kind of come out and say, Hey,
- 15:42Speaker 1: I'm playing in the NBA, I'm playing in the NFL,
- 15:44Speaker 1: I am also gay. So I thought I didn't think
- 15:46Speaker 1: it would have a massive impact. I thought it would
- 15:49Speaker 1: have a bigger impact than it's actually had. But I
- 15:51Speaker 1: never thought it was going to have this massive impact
- 15:53Speaker 1: from the start, you know, yeah, and.
- 15:56Speaker 2: You guys think any differently. I'm just seeing if you
- 15:58Speaker 2: to offer your opinion. No, I'm trying to.
- 16:00Speaker 4: I'm trying to remember if he had come out before.
- 16:04Speaker 4: Michael Sam the Missouri uh Defensive SEC Defensive Player of
- 16:10Speaker 4: the Year who was going to be drafted. But he
- 16:12Speaker 4: when when he was going to be drafted, he was
- 16:14Speaker 4: openly gay and it was going to be a big
- 16:16Speaker 4: thing because it was going to be the first NFL
- 16:18Speaker 4: openly gay player. Because I remember thinking, it's going to snowball,
- 16:24Speaker 4: because it's going it's making it.
- 16:26Speaker 2: More Okay, College came out first. I figured as much.
- 16:31Speaker 2: But well, that's a good point that you bring up too.
- 16:34Speaker 1: Because Collins led to Sam probably said Sam left. He
- 16:39Speaker 1: fell a couple of rounds in the NFL draft. He
- 16:40Speaker 1: was projected second or third. I think he went in
- 16:42Speaker 1: the fifth round.
- 16:43Speaker 2: So little and a little yes and no there because
- 16:47Speaker 2: whereas Jason came out because he wasn't pressured to come out,
- 16:52Speaker 2: he just felt like it was time, right like toward
- 16:54Speaker 2: the end of his career, hoping he could get another
- 16:56Speaker 2: stint after he comes out. And uh, you know, be
- 16:59Speaker 2: somebody that influenced his people. Michael sam reportedly allegedly was
- 17:03Speaker 2: kind of forced out, like it was going to come
- 17:05Speaker 2: out anyway, so he just jumped in. And that happens
- 17:07Speaker 2: for almost all of these folks who come out. It's
- 17:10Speaker 2: that somebody is pushing them along the way and it's
- 17:12Speaker 2: just like, all right, fine, I'll do it. So that
- 17:14Speaker 2: that's a great point because Jason went, like I said,
- 17:16Speaker 2: when he came out, It's another reason why it was
- 17:18Speaker 2: so admirable, because the only reason was to be open
- 17:21Speaker 2: and to be honest. And the reason that I bring
- 17:23Speaker 2: that up is because after talking to Jason, I talked
- 17:26Speaker 2: to him, did an interview with him. I want to
- 17:28Speaker 2: say it was twenty eighteen or nineteen, and it was
- 17:31Speaker 2: just a lot of the details about when he was
- 17:34Speaker 2: closeted and it's basically exactly the fear that you would think.
- 17:38Speaker 2: And there's just, you know, the one story that really
- 17:40Speaker 2: sticks to me that just really pisses me off. But
- 17:43Speaker 2: and I'm not even gonna say the player's name. I'll
- 17:45Speaker 2: just say he was the point guard. Let's just put
- 17:46Speaker 2: it that way. Well, I'm one of Jason's teams and
- 17:49Speaker 2: they were on a flight and this point guard went
- 17:53Speaker 2: was in the back, you know, with his groups of
- 17:55Speaker 2: friends and just talking and then randomly, I don't know where,
- 17:57Speaker 2: in the middle of a flight, just comes up to
- 17:59Speaker 2: Jason in front of everybody, asked him, Hey, are you gay?
- 18:03Speaker 2: And like, imagine, imagine the pit in your stomach when
- 18:06Speaker 2: you're just sitting there like, I'm just trying to get to,
- 18:08Speaker 2: you know, our next stop. What are you doing here?
- 18:11Speaker 2: And I believe his answer was something to the effect
- 18:14Speaker 2: that he was a little stunned, and he started to answer.
- 18:17Speaker 2: And then at the time he had been I guess
- 18:19Speaker 2: fortunate to have a very good female friend who had
- 18:21Speaker 2: visited him all the time. And one of his teammates said, nah, man,
- 18:25Speaker 2: he's got that girl, blah blah blah, and it was like,
- 18:28Speaker 2: so he kind of got settled for him. But those people,
- 18:31Speaker 2: meaning the point guard who asked him that question still
- 18:34Speaker 2: littered all over the league, still in every single locker
- 18:36Speaker 2: room probably and still keeps people from wanting to be
- 18:40Speaker 2: able to be who they are in the workplace. So,
- 18:44Speaker 2: you know, hopefully Jason Collins' legacy will will you know,
- 18:47Speaker 2: last and he will be considered a huge influence in
- 18:50Speaker 2: my mind, absolute superhero and you know, rest in peace,
- 18:53Speaker 2: my brother.
- 18:54Speaker 1: You of course spoke to him on step back wherever
- 18:57Speaker 1: you get in your podcast. No, no, then it.
- 19:00Speaker 2: Was a documentary that I was working on that just
- 19:02Speaker 2: kind of but we don't want to go there now.
- 19:04Speaker 1: Got you thought you thought it was going to have
- 19:06Speaker 1: a bigger impact, did you not? Is he I remember
- 19:07Speaker 1: speaking to you at the time. You thought it would
- 19:09Speaker 1: have a bigger impact. I did.
- 19:10Speaker 2: I did. I thought it was and you know, you
- 19:11Speaker 2: could even tell after he came out it took a
- 19:14Speaker 2: while for a team to even sign him. And then
- 19:15Speaker 2: I was just more disappointed in that, you know what
- 19:17Speaker 2: I mean, because everybody loved him. Everybody loved him as
- 19:19Speaker 2: a teammate, as a tough guy, as a twelfth player
- 19:22Speaker 2: on your bench like that'd be. Maybe it was a
- 19:24Speaker 2: great addition, and so you know, it took Brooklyn to
- 19:26Speaker 2: do it, but at least it got done.
- 19:28Speaker 1: Taylor was quiet on your Silver Metal topic. It's because
- 19:31Speaker 1: he's thinking about Lebron and Jordan. We'll get to that
- 19:33Speaker 1: for just a second. Your Gold Medal of Sadness as well. Yeah, man,
- 19:35Speaker 1: because this one was a shocker.
- 19:36Speaker 2: Brandon Clark died the Memphis Grizzlies forward and you know
- 19:40Speaker 2: he'd been with in the team in the league, with
- 19:42Speaker 2: that team for seven years. And you know there was
- 19:45Speaker 2: no report on officially cause of death or waiting on
- 19:48Speaker 2: the autopsy, but it's being investigated as an overdose because
- 19:51Speaker 2: there is drug paraphernalia there and because you know he
- 19:54Speaker 2: was recently arrested for driving with a controlled substance. And
- 19:59Speaker 2: so to me, Stu and this one is like, it's
- 20:02Speaker 2: a tough one to grasp, right, Like if you think, like, yes,
- 20:06Speaker 2: there are people who are addicted to drugs because they
- 20:09Speaker 2: have an addiction, right, they have that personality type whatever
- 20:13Speaker 2: you want to call it, characteristic within them that makes
- 20:15Speaker 2: them an addict. But what starts them along that way, right,
- 20:19Speaker 2: it's being unhappy. It's finding an escape, right, because look,
- 20:24Speaker 2: I never did any kind of drugs until I was
- 20:26Speaker 2: in my mid thirties. I did some weed, smoked some weed,
- 20:29Speaker 2: and then when I got to forty, when my divorce happened,
- 20:32Speaker 2: I actually did some other recreational drugs and I used
- 20:36Speaker 2: them as an escape for the time.
- 20:38Speaker 1: And I can under get away from your pain, to
- 20:40Speaker 1: get away from your personal pain in the time right, yes.
- 20:43Speaker 2: Yep, Brandon Clark is a millionaire in this country, a
- 20:46Speaker 2: young you know, like, what was he twenty nine years old?
- 20:51Speaker 2: It's he's he was escaping something. And it just hurts
- 20:56Speaker 2: that to know that you've got all these people around you,
- 20:59Speaker 2: You've got all these eyes around you from an entire city,
- 21:02Speaker 2: an entire country, and everybody thinks you're great, and you're
- 21:04Speaker 2: sitting there escaping some sort of pain all the time
- 21:07Speaker 2: until the point where you accidentally die from it. And
- 21:09Speaker 2: it's just like, you know, this isn't one of those
- 21:11Speaker 2: check on your people thing, which I'm always I believe in. Yes,
- 21:14Speaker 2: of course, I'm not just sitting here to say that.
- 21:15Speaker 2: It just makes me think of like, man, it's so powerful.
- 21:19Speaker 2: Whatever it was he was escaping from that overcomes millions
- 21:23Speaker 2: of dollars, that overcomes fame, that overcomes being beloved, and
- 21:27Speaker 2: it's like, no, whatever I'm dealing with is more painful.
- 21:30Speaker 2: I want to escape from that with these drugs, and
- 21:33Speaker 2: then this happens, and it's just it's just super sad man.
- 21:35Speaker 2: And like anybody that thinks that everybody's you know, doing well,
- 21:38Speaker 2: just you know, look for some signs, do whatever you can.
- 21:40Speaker 2: But it was just super troubling to hear.
- 21:43Speaker 3: Yeah, and is you almost wonder how did his injuries
- 21:47Speaker 3: this season impact Brendan Clark getting arrested where he only
- 21:52Speaker 3: plays two games for the Grizzlies this season. He had
- 21:56Speaker 3: multiple injuries this season, and if there's any connection to
- 22:01Speaker 3: him being away from the team and him kind of
- 22:03Speaker 3: falling into this obvious dark place.
- 22:05Speaker 2: Yeah, I would say, like there are plenty of athletes
- 22:09Speaker 2: that deal with devastating injuries, right, and you deal with
- 22:12Speaker 2: it in different ways, Like who's the Phillips the Dolphins
- 22:17Speaker 2: guy who's now I believe with the Eagle.
- 22:18Speaker 1: Jordan Jalen Phillips, Jalen Phillips. And I was right the
- 22:24Speaker 1: first time.
- 22:25Speaker 2: Spen's Colin j Like, he's gone through enough injuries were
- 22:29Speaker 2: of just like if he was of a certain you know,
- 22:32Speaker 2: personality type or whatever, he would have gone down the
- 22:35Speaker 2: wrong path. So it could be anything but me personally,
- 22:39Speaker 2: it's just a guess, just a complete conjecture, Like I
- 22:42Speaker 2: don't think injuries take him that route. I think whatever
- 22:45Speaker 2: he was running from or getting an escape from, it
- 22:48Speaker 2: probably amplified it because he had more time to himself.
- 22:51Speaker 3: Can I explain what happened there?
- 22:52Speaker 2: Please do please do? Yes, yes, So.
- 22:55Speaker 3: Jordan Phillips was a twenty fifteen second round pick by
- 22:59Speaker 3: the Dolphins. I I just heard the name Phillips, and
- 23:01Speaker 3: I just I had a fifty to fifty guest of
- 23:03Speaker 3: getting right.
- 23:05Speaker 1: No, you did it. That's not fifty to fifty right there?
- 23:07Speaker 3: I mean Jordan and Jailen, Jordan and Jailen. You name
- 23:10Speaker 3: another Phillips on the Dolphins.
- 23:13Speaker 1: I can't, I can't. You're right.
- 23:15Speaker 2: I'm sorry, check made it.
- 23:16Speaker 1: Sorry, you got it wrong?
- 23:21Speaker 2: Brady is he?
- 23:24Speaker 1: The other interesting thing about this is these guys professional athletes.
- 23:28Speaker 1: This is really interesting actually to me, because you are
- 23:31Speaker 1: taking the way, you are taking away the thing that
- 23:34Speaker 1: defines them at such an early age, meaning he's not
- 23:37Speaker 1: around the team, and of course that could morphit. All
- 23:39Speaker 1: he knows is basketball. All he knows is having teammates.
- 23:42Speaker 1: And I worry about all these athletes once they're left
- 23:45Speaker 1: to their own devices, and most of them are left
- 23:47Speaker 1: to their own devices at a very early age where
- 23:49Speaker 1: they're confused, they're not certain what they're going to do
- 23:52Speaker 1: for the remainder of their life. And of course, when
- 23:54Speaker 1: you take away the thing that defines you at twenty nine,
- 23:58Speaker 1: thirty years old, thirty one years old, of course the
- 24:00Speaker 1: pressure might set in. And your point about he had
- 24:04Speaker 1: every reason to be happy and yet somehow he wasn't
- 24:07Speaker 1: is such a great point because you think you know people,
- 24:10Speaker 1: and to check in on your friends every now and
- 24:12Speaker 1: again is very important because a person might seem like
- 24:15Speaker 1: they have it all and really you have no idea
- 24:17Speaker 1: what's going on inside.
- 24:18Speaker 2: Right, And the one part that I didn't mention is
- 24:20Speaker 2: just like this wasn't a full time escape for him, right,
- 24:24Speaker 2: Like in anybody's mind, it's like, yeah, I'm just doing
- 24:26Speaker 2: this to get by this certain time.
- 24:29Speaker 1: Right.
- 24:29Speaker 2: He didn't expect to overdose, right, he was just whatever
- 24:33Speaker 2: Allegedly if that happened, nobody expects to overdose. It wasn't
- 24:37Speaker 2: seemingly that's not the way you're going to commit suicide, right,
- 24:40Speaker 2: So it's just a shock to the system that not
- 24:42Speaker 2: only did you have issues, but then oh no, oh no,
- 24:47Speaker 2: you got the wrong batch and I'll or maybe you
- 24:49Speaker 2: know whatever whatever happened and now there is no coming
- 24:52Speaker 2: back from that, And it's just absolutely like it's why
- 24:54Speaker 2: it's the gold medal. It's just absolutely like mind numbingly
- 24:59Speaker 2: just sad that it was just a life gone wrong. Yeah.
- 25:04Speaker 1: Uh, there's no easy way to transition from that to
- 25:07Speaker 1: a conversation that I always am up for, which is
- 25:10Speaker 1: Lebron and Michael. Before we get to that conversation, though,
- 25:13Speaker 1: was he let me ask you this, And perhaps I'm
- 25:14Speaker 1: getting ahead of myself, and I don't know what Nick
- 25:16Speaker 1: fans getting mad at me. Taylor don't get mad at me.
- 25:18Speaker 1: How did the Knicks match up with Oklahoma City? I mean.
- 25:23Speaker 2: You're looking ahead, aren't you. Well, yes, if they get
- 25:29Speaker 2: past let's just say, which team do you think it's
- 25:31Speaker 2: going to be? Cleveland or the Pistons?
- 25:33Speaker 1: It doesn't matter the same team, Okay, Well, I mean
- 25:37Speaker 1: you're right.
- 25:37Speaker 2: It's a guard heavy team with strong, you know, defenders
- 25:41Speaker 2: interior and the interior. I think if they were to
- 25:44Speaker 2: get past the Pistons, let's say it's a Cade Cunningham
- 25:47Speaker 2: offense with offensive rebounders and crazy defenders all around them,
- 25:51Speaker 2: I think it would give them more of the sort
- 25:54Speaker 2: of you know, dress rehearsal for the thunder than if
- 25:58Speaker 2: it was Cleveland Cleveland and a little bit all over
- 26:01Speaker 2: the place, a little less heliocentric. Sometime if it's James
- 26:04Speaker 2: Harden going, he can take the ball. Sometimes if it's
- 26:06Speaker 2: Donovan Mitchell going, he can take the ball. And you're
- 26:09Speaker 2: kind of confused sometimes as to how they use the bigs.
- 26:12Speaker 2: But I think they would probably match up pretty well
- 26:15Speaker 2: because they could score with them. Like I think they
- 26:17Speaker 2: found their offense that it isn't so predictable and they
- 26:20Speaker 2: could score with them, and yeah in Matt case, and
- 26:23Speaker 2: then it's just a matter of, hey, how do we
- 26:25Speaker 2: solve the SGA problem? Because SGA versus Brunton is a mismatch.
- 26:29Speaker 3: Even though the Pacers lost to them, I think the
- 26:31Speaker 3: Pacers kind of had the blueprint to beating the thunder
- 26:34Speaker 3: team and pushing it as as far as that series did,
- 26:38Speaker 3: where you have to just turn games against them into
- 26:40Speaker 3: a track meet and not try to slow them down
- 26:43Speaker 3: thinking you're going to get the stops because realistically you're
- 26:45Speaker 3: not going to get too many stops with how affishing
- 26:47Speaker 3: their offense is.
- 26:48Speaker 2: Well, here's the thing with so they their defense is
- 26:50Speaker 2: they're very trusting of each other and it's helped you know,
- 26:54Speaker 2: if somebody goes to be aggressive on the ball, they
- 26:57Speaker 2: know behind them they're going to be covered. The part
- 27:00Speaker 2: where that becomes a little bit dicey, as if it's faster, right,
- 27:04Speaker 2: It's like the faster you go, the more decisions that
- 27:06Speaker 2: have to make, and the more likely they're gonna somebody's
- 27:09Speaker 2: gonna say, oh no, and they left the dude, you know,
- 27:10Speaker 2: open the corner. And so yeah, if you pick up
- 27:13Speaker 2: the pace in the game, it's probably your best option.
- 27:15Speaker 2: The only thing is with the Knicks, do they have
- 27:18Speaker 2: the guys that can handle bring it up and really
- 27:20Speaker 2: push it? Probably? I think Bridges can do it. I think,
- 27:22Speaker 2: you know, as long as he's good, o g can
- 27:24Speaker 2: do it. But for the most part, even kat Ken
- 27:27Speaker 2: a little bit of he with the magic. So I
- 27:30Speaker 2: do think they match up pretty decently. And I'm saying
- 27:33Speaker 2: that without looking up at the regular season numbers. But
- 27:36Speaker 2: I'm gonna look at those now.
- 27:38Speaker 1: All right, good, you can look at them after the fact. Taylor,
- 27:40Speaker 1: what do you have for us on a Jordan and
- 27:42Speaker 1: Lebron a conversation? I'm always up for it's in fact,
- 27:44Speaker 1: it's all I want to do. I just want to
- 27:46Speaker 1: discuss Jordan and Lebron. Go ahead, Jordan, Yes.
- 27:50Speaker 3: The god so the Lebron Michael Jordan conversation we could
- 27:56Speaker 3: all agree. Whatever side you're on, it's seemingly never going
- 28:01Speaker 3: to go away.
- 28:02Speaker 2: Whatever you're wrong. Yes, at the very least, sports.
- 28:07Speaker 1: Unless you're on Jordan's side.
- 28:08Speaker 3: Sports media is gonna continue this debate until the end
- 28:11Speaker 3: of time. But I have a question for you guys.
- 28:14Speaker 3: What was Michael Jordan not able to do?
- 28:18Speaker 2: Make the Major League play Baseball pick a winner.
- 28:26Speaker 1: Close?
- 28:27Speaker 3: And this is how Michael, this is how Lebron James
- 28:29Speaker 3: could get one over on Michael Jordan. Lebron has to
- 28:33Speaker 3: go to Washington and win in Washington.
- 28:37Speaker 1: So go to the Wizards and win. Just make the
- 28:39Speaker 1: playoffs like Eastern Conference semi finals, and you're gonna count
- 28:42Speaker 1: that as a ring. What are you doing here?
- 28:44Speaker 3: So if Lebron goes to Washington and it's him, Anthony Davis,
- 28:48Speaker 3: Trey Young, and Darren Peterson, agent de Bonds and whoever
- 28:52Speaker 3: they add with that number one pick, if that team
- 28:54Speaker 3: wins a title, the conversation's over.
- 28:57Speaker 1: I mean, it's so so yeah, yeah, but that seems
- 29:00Speaker 1: not winning a title.
- 29:01Speaker 2: Soda and Lebron James have already won a title together.
- 29:05Speaker 1: Wait, so you're saying, you're saying at this stage, at
- 29:08Speaker 1: this stage, of his career. This is a last gasp
- 29:10Speaker 1: effort to try to get Lebron James past Michael Jordan.
- 29:13Speaker 1: I think the only way you could do it is
- 29:14Speaker 1: by going to the Wizards of winning a title there.
- 29:16Speaker 2: I think what Taylor's saying is it is the one
- 29:19Speaker 2: absolute move that there's no doubt that the debate is
- 29:23Speaker 2: over because he literally did what Michael couldn't do.
- 29:26Speaker 1: Right, Yes, but then Michael went on to NASCAR and
- 29:29Speaker 1: you know he won there, and yeah, I mean.
- 29:33Speaker 2: This is the must.
- 29:35Speaker 1: Well, there's still the six versus five thing. If Lebron
- 29:38Speaker 1: did indeed pull that off, six rings for Lebron five
- 29:40Speaker 1: I mean six for Michael, five for Lebron, really eight
- 29:43Speaker 1: for Michael if you count the two years he took off.
- 29:45Speaker 4: How about if Lebron makes the major leagues?
- 29:49Speaker 2: Wow, yeah, that's a whole different question.
- 29:52Speaker 3: Now have you seen him swing a golf club? I
- 29:53Speaker 3: don't think he's I don't think he's going proing something
- 29:55Speaker 3: other than basketball.
- 29:56Speaker 2: Yeah, that's true. That's all the craziest thing, dude, did
- 30:00Speaker 2: you see they were showing silhouettes of golf swings and
- 30:04Speaker 2: Rory McElroy named every single one of them. Correctly, and
- 30:08Speaker 2: they weren't even all golfers. Lebron James was on the list.
- 30:12Speaker 2: Yes he got a few. He got Jordan Speeth before
- 30:17Speaker 2: he even swung the club. Just the way he was standing, unbelievable.
- 30:21Speaker 1: That is, are you into the PGA Championship this weekend?
- 30:24Speaker 1: Is he?
- 30:24Speaker 2: Of course he sneaking golf fan?
- 30:28Speaker 1: Your guy? Why is it always Cam Young? There's other
- 30:32Speaker 1: players on tour, man.
- 30:33Speaker 2: I know, I just so when I started to become
- 30:36Speaker 2: a Cam Young fan is when he started his move,
- 30:39Speaker 2: right when he started winning tournaments. And I'm just like,
- 30:42Speaker 2: I think this is my doing. I think me as
- 30:44Speaker 2: a fan has boosted his career, and so I'm just
- 30:46Speaker 2: gonna take this ride as long as it goes. And
- 30:48Speaker 2: if you look, I mean, I think he's shooting up
- 30:50Speaker 2: the charts in certain in terms of favorites for this,
- 30:52Speaker 2: I think he might be second or third now behind Scotti.
- 30:55Speaker 2: Scheffler plus fifteen hundred. It's a pretty good.
- 30:57Speaker 1: Price, yep. It's so much more fun talking Lebron and
- 31:01Speaker 1: Michael
