- 0:02first gallop. Phillip, who has quadriplegic
- 0:06cerebral palsy, is recognized as the first black transgender and
- 0:10physically disabled model to sign with a major agency.
- 0:15Stunning and all black. So one of the human.
- 0:17Why are you laughing at someone for being disabled?
- 0:19I'm not laughing at her, I'm laughing at the newscasters, he
- 0:24said. Stunning and all black you're
- 0:25trying so hard to. Say that's what I'm laughing.
- 0:28At but what everyone else is thinking.
- 0:30The fashion industry is unlikely to book or pay black, trans,
- 0:35feminist and or physically disabled models.
- 0:37I love representation. At the end of the day, there is
- 0:40going to be a majority in a country.
- 0:44All right, ready. Yeah, I'm always ready.
- 0:49What? My friend sending pictures of a
- 0:52boy in the group chat. And he's ugly.
- 0:54No, he's cute, but like, I don't want to.
- 0:55I don't want to see another boy. Oh.
- 0:59My God, you need to chill. Hey guys, welcome back to Normal
- 1:02GAZE where we take out in Cindy. I'm Brad Palombo here with
- 1:05Clarkson Lawson. I'm not here, I'm mentally
- 1:07somewhere else. OK, I guess I'm solo hosting
- 1:10this episode. Wait, but we're going to play a
- 1:13game and you're not going to. How are you going to play the
- 1:16game if you're not here? Miss you, baby.
- 1:18EW, calm down all. Right, back to work.
- 1:22What are you doing? We're going to play a game
- 1:24called If you laugh, you're a bigot.
- 1:28OK, so I'm going to play a. Clip I'm feeling pretty monotone
- 1:30today so I think I'm going to win this.
- 1:32And the first How about this? The first one of us to audibly
- 1:35laugh at this clip is a bigot. OK, Brad's going to lose.
- 1:38I'm going to. Lose.
- 1:40I don't really laugh at anything unless it's myself.
- 1:42You laugh at yourself all the time.
- 1:43You do your laugh where you go. Yeah, because I'm funny and.
- 1:49It's the. Funny and the and also like if
- 1:50you don't laugh at yourself, if you don't back yourself, nobody
- 1:53else will you're. Supposed to also laugh at other
- 1:55people. I don't find other people funny,
- 1:58just me. OK, alright, you want to watch
- 2:00the? Clip Yeah, let's watch it.
- 2:01Let's. Talk about model and musician
- 2:03Ariana Rose Phillip, who celebrated her first gallop.
- 2:05Phillip, who has quadriplegic cerebral palsy, is recognized as
- 2:10the first black transgender and physically disabled model to
- 2:15sign with a major agency, she said.
- 2:18Girls. Quite a moment.
- 2:21Stunning and all black. So one of the human models for
- 2:24mannequins at this year's popular Met Gala Costume
- 2:27Institute exhibit. The exhibit is called Costume
- 2:30Art, Includes a handful of mannequins with larger bodies,
- 2:33bodies and wheelchairs, pregnant bodies, trans bodies and bodies
- 2:36with missing limbs. Costume Institute curator Andrew
- 2:40Bolton says the goal of this year's exhibit is to reclaim the
- 2:43body. Very cool.
- 2:45So give me a second. Stunning it all back.
- 2:49Shut up. What?
- 2:50I said give me a second, I'm composing.
- 2:54I think I was just talking to. Yourself.
- 2:59Clark over here, I think that she looks amazing and stunning.
- 3:06So I'm just a terrible person for laughing at any of that.
- 3:11OK. But so I had to explain this on
- 3:13Twitter because I tweeted this clip and I said, if you don't
- 3:17laugh at this, we can't be friends.
- 3:20And what people were like, somebody comes back and was
- 3:22like, why are you laughing at someone for being disabled?
- 3:26And I'm like, you don't understand.
- 3:28I'm not laughing at her in this clip.
- 3:31I'm laughing at the newscasters. He.
- 3:34Says he said stunning and all black.
- 3:36It's just so funny because it's like you're trying so hard to.
- 3:39Say that's what I'm laughing at. But what everyone else is
- 3:42thinking the. Newscasters literally looked at
- 3:44her and said stunning and all black.
- 3:46Stunning and all black with a. Straight face.
- 3:48You know what? Good for them, good for them.
- 3:51As somebody who has laughed at in our opportune times during
- 3:55interviews on television, I can't really control.
- 3:59No, no, I would have. Actually, No, I could have.
- 4:02I probably would have just reacted the same way that I just
- 4:04did. I would have laughed out loud
- 4:06and they would have been like, why?
- 4:07What, What are you laughing at? I'm like bro, come on.
- 4:10Is she an artist? I think she's a model, and I
- 4:14should be clear, I really have no issue with this woman, she
- 4:16said. Like, at all.
- 4:18I think it's kind of ridiculous. I'm already in trouble with the
- 4:21disabled community, so I'm going to keep my mouth shut.
- 4:24Hopefully, yeah, you did. I did.
- 4:27I've said enough. Sit in the corner I am.
- 4:29I'm going to. Sit.
- 4:30I'll just carry this one myself. I don't have any issue with her,
- 4:33but I do find it. I hope God.
- 4:37It's so funny because we have to say that.
- 4:40Like people should understand that, but I'm allowed to laugh
- 4:43at the absurdity of the spectacle of these people acting
- 4:47as if there's nothing ridiculous about putting a person in a
- 4:50wheelchair with cerebral palsy, it who is happens to check every
- 4:55woke box on the like. It's not even just we're going
- 4:58to have a model with cerebral palsy.
- 5:00It's not even just we're going to have, you know, the first
- 5:03black trans. It's it's literally everything.
- 5:05Hold on, I it was so much that I didn't even really comprehend.
- 5:09So she black. Trans disabled, with cerebral
- 5:13palsy and I don't know what else.
- 5:16Damn, Triple homicide. I don't really know what Candace
- 5:20Owens has been up to recently. I feel like I've just kind of,
- 5:22I've actually muted her like at all of like I've muted Candace
- 5:27Owens. I can't look away.
- 5:29I, I, I have no idea what she's doing.
- 5:32Well, my favorite with our channel partners at Kalashi, my
- 5:35favorite market they've got going on right now is just a
- 5:38market on every time she does an episode.
- 5:40What words will Candace say during her live stream?
- 5:43And you really never know what the heck is going to be on that
- 5:46list. But so for example, for the
- 5:48latest one from May 11th, people thought there was a 56% chance
- 5:52she would say AI or artificial intelligence, a 52% chance she
- 5:56would say Zionist and a 48% chance she would say Iran said
- 6:01that Brigitte and penis didn't make the cut.
- 6:05But who knows, maybe on the. Maybe she's uncircumcised?
- 6:08This is this is one of those recurring markets, so it might
- 6:13make it another time. But anyway, Kaushi is where the
- 6:16future is happening. So it is the first CFTC
- 6:18regulated exchange dedicated to trading on the outcome of future
- 6:23events. If you want to get in on all of
- 6:26that, you can use the link in our description or the pin
- 6:28comment or just use promo code Brad P to get $20 when you trade
- 6:33$20. Now.
- 6:35Now back to the show. You get what I'm saying?
- 6:36How them just acting like it's not absurd and of course, it's
- 6:40part of like, a stunt. Yeah.
- 6:43It's like they literally say it's part like oh, they're
- 6:45having exhibits to showcase all. Body yeah, they're trying it's
- 6:49they're they're it's like art, but the art is but also.
- 6:53Can we talk about this? How?
- 6:54Like not everyone should be a model?
- 6:58Correct, Correct. Unless you're modelling like.
- 7:02Wheelchairs, sorry, it's not bad, it's not mean.
- 7:08If you're a fan and you're in a wheelchair, you have cerebral
- 7:11palsy. It's not a shame to you.
- 7:12It's the absurdity of the situation.
- 7:14I don't want to be woke because this is funny.
- 7:17I know. But I think about like, gay
- 7:21characters in shows and like that type of representation and
- 7:25how I feel when I see it, you know, like, it's nice.
- 7:28To have fun. But there's a difference between
- 7:29that and like modelling, which is a very specific thing.
- 7:34Sure, and. I do think that models.
- 7:37Like like where? Should be the top tier looks
- 7:40wise. In their in.
- 7:42Every way, shape or. Form is not.
- 7:44Yeah. And whether that's their fault
- 7:45or not is kind of irrelevant. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 7:48Well, looks aren't Yeah, exactly.
- 7:49I get what you're saying. Like I.
- 7:50Just I agree there's no representation for just uggos in
- 7:54modelling. Yeah, well, maybe I'm trying to.
- 8:00Think not everyone gets to be represented.
- 8:02Maybe like if like at Spencer's like they're models that are
- 8:07modelling like the the chains and like the furry outfits.
- 8:10I've I've never been in there and I've never browsed that.
- 8:13Oh my God, not this again. All right, let's watch the next
- 8:17one. I didn't laugh.
- 8:18Oh well, that doesn't mean it. It's Stephen Hawking, your
- 8:20favorite, and it says the original.
- 8:22But as the Netflix remake, it has, I admit it.
- 8:27That's funny laugh, you know. I can't laugh.
- 8:30If you laugh, you're a bigot. I know and.
- 8:32You're no, no, no, I I, I would love to be called a bigot.
- 8:35I love being unique with. The with the disabled community
- 8:37in particular. No, but I just, sometimes I
- 8:39don't like laugh, but I find something funny.
- 8:41It's like when you watch a show and it's like, Oh yeah, that was
- 8:44funny, but it you don't laugh. OK, well let me read you some
- 8:48quotes. She was, she was interviewed, I
- 8:50think this is. Let's see if I can.
- 8:53Ariana Rose Phillip on attending her historic first Met Gala.
- 8:56Quote Girls, I've made it. I think that this is her right.
- 9:01Wait, what? Never mind, I'm just trying to
- 9:05figure out if the appropriate pronoun is girls or not.
- 9:08Well, what do you mean? She's.
- 9:11She's a trans woman. OK, OK, Got.
- 9:13It got. It I think that for a long time
- 9:15it's been easy to see a disabled person in the public eye and
- 9:17label them in the activist because we have no choice but to
- 9:20speak up for ourselves in the spaces that we inhabit, because
- 9:23other people are not familiar with our bodies or how to
- 9:26accommodate us. We're given the title of
- 9:29activist because we are challenging a social system,
- 9:33yes. I agree.
- 9:37Well, I think that people don't realize there's no choice but to
- 9:39do that if you have a disability in a major public space because
- 9:42we have been so historically marginalized and pushed aside.
- 9:46OK, so far I'm not like it's a little cringe the language, but
- 9:49I'm like I. Don't disagree.
- 9:50Yeah. I don't necessarily disagree.
- 9:52Here's the part where it gets cringe.
- 9:54Unfortunately, with the fascist shift in our global society, we
- 9:58are seeing people return to ableism and to eugenics and
- 10:02harmful rhetoric toward disabled people.
- 10:07No, no. What is the evidence for this?
- 10:12The Sydney Sweeney jeans ad like.
- 10:14Actually, that's probably what they were thinking.
- 10:17That's dead ass. Probably like their strongest
- 10:19evidence of eugenics and a bitch rhyming.
- 10:21It's a a pun about. But also, OK, the whole eugenics
- 10:25argument goes please. Don't endorse eugenics.
- 10:27I'm not. Endorsing eugenics.
- 10:29I'm just saying, like, I'm not saying you should abort a kid
- 10:32because it has like a disability, but if there's ways
- 10:35to avoid that in the womb, wouldn't you want to like if
- 10:40there was some like scientific, like I've seen something about
- 10:43like having some revelation about being able to gene edit
- 10:47when they're in the room in the womb.
- 10:48And then somebody on Twitter is like, this is eugenics, by the
- 10:51way. And it's like, do you want your
- 10:52baby to come out with like 3 legs or do you want him to have
- 10:55two? You know what I mean?
- 10:57It's, it's a tricky question though, because like obviously
- 11:01there's some suffering that could be ameliorated, but
- 11:04they're also is in all seriousness, in all seriousness,
- 11:07I think there is value and beauty in human biodiversity.
- 11:11And it's a very dangerous power to give any human being or, or
- 11:16whether it's a doctor or a scientist or government or even
- 11:19parents to decide which traits. Because the way this is mostly
- 11:24done is through selective abortions.
- 11:26But even with something like gene editing, I imagine you'd
- 11:29get much more uncomfortable with it if people started saying what
- 11:32if you could detect a gay gene and they could edit it in the
- 11:37womb. What if you sure there's a
- 11:38slippery slope to? Everything.
- 11:40And that's a particularly slippery line.
- 11:42They think if but that you can't inhibit that if it's also
- 11:45preventing someone to have what should Parkinson's or something
- 11:49like that, like that's debilitating.
- 11:52There's really no but the problem.
- 11:54Is that? You can make light out of a hard
- 11:56situation. But where's the line between
- 11:58something that's debilitated? To draw it.
- 12:01And it's a very tough one to draw.
- 12:02Sure, but that doesn't mean that we should just throw out the
- 12:04pencil. I I don't disagree, I'm just
- 12:08saying it's a very complicated subject.
- 12:09Right, Right. Anyways, it's supposed to be
- 12:11funny. Ha ha.
- 12:12Yeah, so I want to play you a clip from her Ted Talk.
- 12:15When I first started working, I was an anomaly to the industry,
- 12:19arguably in many ways. Today, really, I still am.
- 12:22I think it's time to see the quiet part out loud.
- 12:26The fashion industry is unlikely to book or pay black, trans,
- 12:31feminine and or physically disabled models to do runway,
- 12:36editorial and or campaign because of an absence of
- 12:40whiteness. I'm sorry, bitch.
- 12:46There's not. There's not really a strong
- 12:49argument for that specifically nowadays.
- 12:53Considering the reaction to Sidney Sweeney's ad.
- 12:55I think that well also like. The point that a couple years
- 13:01later they would be putting her at the Met Gala specifically as
- 13:05it's like, right? Also, like here's my issue with
- 13:08this whole thing. I love representation, but at
- 13:14the end of the day, there is going to be a majority in a
- 13:16country and if you want to market to the majorities, you're
- 13:21going to see more white people than you're going to see black
- 13:25or trans people. Well, but I feel like you're not
- 13:27even focusing on the point. The point that she's suggesting
- 13:31is that the reason physically disabled people aren't getting
- 13:35modelling opportunities is because they're not white.
- 13:40No bitch. No, I I mean I haven't seen any
- 13:46other I think. She may have cerebral palsy.
- 13:50Oh, irregardless, I. Don't know what the difference
- 13:52is to be honest, Doctor. They're different.
- 13:56Parkinson's cerebral palsy? What's the difference?
- 13:59He says. He says they're very.
- 14:00Different. I'm going to shut up now, but.
- 14:02You get what I'm saying? It's not the whiteness, it's
- 14:05that like, would you be honest? Would you see a pair of jeans on
- 14:09a person in a wheelchair with cerebral palsy and be like, I
- 14:13got to get me some of those? Well, you can't even really see
- 14:15them because most of the time their legs are kind of like.
- 14:18Oh, you really had to demonstrate for the class.
- 14:21Yeah, I did see a girl at Universal with no legs and she
- 14:26was cutting the lines. As she should.
- 14:30Yeah. What, are you going to just
- 14:31offend the disabled community again?
- 14:33I'm going to shut up. You've been so reserved in this
- 14:35episode because you got your spanking from them.
- 14:37I did. No, Oh my God, simp all right.
- 14:43Anyways, I'm being too good and I'm not being funny and I want
- 14:46to issue an apology, OK? I'm so sorry that I am turning a
- 14:50new leaf and becoming a lover boy and just want to find light
- 14:54in the world. Amen.
- 14:57Literally next what if next week you show up for the podcast
- 14:59you're wearing all black. I'm going to change and you.
- 15:02It's all over and you're depressed and emo and and.
- 15:05I'm going to be a raging. That'd be so different from all
- 15:08the other days. I just can't, you know?
- 15:10I can't fake it. I'm just going to be me, you
- 15:12know? OK, well, like I said, I.
- 15:15Don't. Was it?
- 15:15Wait, was this it? Yeah, this is the story The
- 15:17girl. I thought we were going to react
- 15:18to more funny things and see if we could.
- 15:20Laugh. No, it was just her.
- 15:21It was just that story because I just thought I've, I've found
- 15:24that to be like cartoonishly tokenistic, just kind of like
- 15:28the microcosm of liberal identity politics to their most
- 15:33absurd where you're checking every single box.
- 15:37And then I really was struck by this because like I said, I have
- 15:40like absolutely no ill will towards this woman or any of her
- 15:43different boxes she checks are all fine by me.
- 15:46I was more like struck by the absurdity of that CBS News clip.
- 15:52This is one of the most elite journalism institutions and
- 15:56they're all pretending. They're all lying and saying
- 16:01stunning in black and all the other gassing up like it just as
- 16:06if that's not, you know. Nobody can just be honest.
- 16:10And be like, you know what, maybe it's nice that we
- 16:12intentionally carve out space for people with very rare
- 16:15disabilities. Instead, they're acting like
- 16:17she's actually. Like it's based on merit.
- 16:20It's not. You may have merit, but the
- 16:24decision is clearly influenced by other things.
- 16:26Besides that, and I found that to it in just the, what else did
- 16:30they say in the clip? They're like they talk about
- 16:33the. For I don't.
- 16:34Know the Met Gala or the museum or something.
- 16:37Having like a exhibit with larger bodies and more bodies
- 16:40and one of them is like, how wonderful.
- 16:42OK, now larger bodies. This is where my line gets drawn
- 16:47because that, even though it's hard to lose weight, is a
- 16:50choice, correct? And if you are, we don't need.
- 16:53To be offensive to like Miss Girl here and people with
- 16:55disabilities like that, to view that as the same, as correct,
- 16:58just chunk. Correct, because if you are just
- 17:01higher like yo we need more diverse, but no you don't, you
- 17:04don't it, it's a choice. Now disabled people sure build
- 17:08the ramp, OK, but I don't think that larger people should be
- 17:13using that ramp. Oh, and they they do be using it
- 17:17they. Doing it, yeah.
- 17:19Yeah, stairs are tough. All right, guys, let us know
- 17:22what you think in the comments. Do become a channel member.
- 17:25We're going to watch some more of my Strange Addiction clips, I
- 17:27I believe, and anything else for them.
- 17:31No, it's kind of boring today. You're not boring.
- 17:35You're fine. OK, All right.
- 17:37Bye, guys. We'll be back with more real
- 17:38soon.
