- 0:00Speaker 1: You're the Yukon Hockey Coaches Show. It's the first of
- 0:02Speaker 1: three coaches shows we have this week. Tomorrow we have
- 0:04Speaker 1: a twin bill. It's Jim Moore and Mike along with
- 0:08Speaker 1: Jaden McDonald and Lewis Hansen. Though there's a players on
- 0:11Speaker 1: the Football show from six to seven, and then I'll
- 0:13Speaker 1: talk women's hoops with Gino for the first time this season.
- 0:16Speaker 1: Player guest TBA. That'll be tomorrow night at seven. All
- 0:20Speaker 1: that on the Yukon Sports Network from Learfield. Busy week
- 0:23Speaker 1: men Wednesday, women Thursday, Hockey, Friday, football and men's basketball Saturday,
- 0:28Speaker 1: Women's Sunday.
- 0:29Speaker 2: It's November. Everything's going on.
- 0:31Speaker 1: Here with Mike Kavanaugh and you were talking about part
- 0:35Speaker 1: of the reason why you mixed up lines a little
- 0:37Speaker 1: bit because of the first line with Kayden Shahan and
- 0:41Speaker 1: Hudson Shandor at that time it was Ethan Garddulah maybe
- 0:44Speaker 1: a little stagnant. What of what you seen from Hudson
- 0:47Speaker 1: this year. I know he was batting a respiratory issue
- 0:50Speaker 1: early in the season, but now that he's one hundred percent,
- 0:52Speaker 1: what have you seen in his play? Because I mean,
- 0:54Speaker 1: he's looking to create, but I don't know, is he
- 0:57Speaker 1: shooting the puck enough.
- 1:01Speaker 2: Or does he have to?
- 1:03Speaker 3: Yeah? No, I think he's I think Hudson's best hockey's
- 1:08Speaker 3: going to be in front of him. You know, he
- 1:09Speaker 3: was battling a little nagging injury early, which he's over.
- 1:13Speaker 3: I think now. He was battling that respiratory. He had
- 1:16Speaker 3: two freshmen, you know, linemates. Yeah, so, and and he's
- 1:24Speaker 3: commanding the locker room as well. It's a lot. Yeah,
- 1:26Speaker 3: and you know, we're probably gonna I always meet with
- 1:30Speaker 3: the captains every week. We'll meet this week, and I
- 1:32Speaker 3: just want him to relax and play right now. I
- 1:35Speaker 3: hope he's not that type of kid that puts the
- 1:37Speaker 3: pressure on himself to to score. I'm sure that he
- 1:41Speaker 3: feels that as a fifty year kid, he wants to
- 1:45Speaker 3: be creating more offense, and we do as well. We'd
- 1:48Speaker 3: like him to create more offense as well, but it
- 1:50Speaker 3: will come. He's just a very good two hundred foot
- 1:54Speaker 3: hockey player that I can you know, our staff can
- 1:58Speaker 3: rely on, and so many any different situations that he's
- 2:03Speaker 3: invaluable to our club.
- 2:05Speaker 2: When you say you want Hudson to relax and play,
- 2:09Speaker 2: who is somebody right now that you feel is relaxing,
- 2:12Speaker 2: is out there just seeing the ice well and just
- 2:14Speaker 2: playing free.
- 2:16Speaker 3: I think Ryan Taddle and Tristan Frasier have been pretty
- 2:22Speaker 3: consistent all year long. I think Joey Muldowney has been
- 2:26Speaker 3: playing really confident, you know, playing with a lot of
- 2:31Speaker 3: energy and confidence throughout the season. So you know, you
- 2:36Speaker 3: need a lot of players doing that. But it's a
- 2:39Speaker 3: long season and there's ups and downs, and as I
- 2:43Speaker 3: said earlier, it's you have to have that. We had
- 2:47Speaker 3: are Yo get instruck to Carol Pantsia.
- 2:50Speaker 2: She how is Carol?
- 2:51Speaker 3: She's great, She's great. Her her term was a more
- 2:55Speaker 3: fatigue the love of fate. So whatever happens, you have
- 2:58Speaker 3: to embrace it and move on. And I thought yesterday
- 3:02Speaker 3: was a shining example of that. Yesterday where so many
- 3:06Speaker 3: things were thrown at us and where it's like, well,
- 3:10Speaker 3: this is what's happening. Let's we can't we can't change
- 3:13Speaker 3: what's happened.
- 3:13Speaker 2: Let's figure it out, figure it out and move on.
- 3:16Speaker 3: And I thought that was Yesterday's was a game was
- 3:19Speaker 3: a prime example of that.
- 3:22Speaker 1: Mike you mentioned we were talking about the four to
- 3:25Speaker 1: four goal and that came off a face off when
- 3:27Speaker 1: Joel Model won the face off and the goal ensued,
- 3:31Speaker 1: and that was right off a face off. How do
- 3:33Speaker 1: you determine who's in the face off that for you?
- 3:36Speaker 1: Is that predetermined or.
- 3:37Speaker 3: Well, most of the time it's it's the center of
- 3:41Speaker 3: that line, and we at times will play a positionless
- 3:47Speaker 3: defensive zone. It doesn't really matter. We don't play the
- 3:51Speaker 3: center has to always be down low. It can be interchangeable.
- 3:55Speaker 3: The center is just usually our best face off man.
- 3:59Speaker 3: And what I I like to try to do is
- 4:01Speaker 3: get two guys on each line, a lefty and a
- 4:04Speaker 3: righty who can both take face offs. Because when you
- 4:08Speaker 3: can do that, we have found that usually when you're
- 4:11Speaker 3: taking draws to your backhand, you have a better chance
- 4:14Speaker 3: of winning the draw. So if it's on our left dot,
- 4:17Speaker 3: I would like a lefty taking it. If it's on
- 4:18Speaker 3: our right dot, I'd like a righty taken it. And
- 4:21Speaker 3: then there's certain situations where Taber he slip may match
- 4:25Speaker 3: up better against this guy than you know, Hudson chandor might,
- 4:30Speaker 3: so I try to keep tabor against this guy. So there,
- 4:34Speaker 3: you know, we do a lot of work looking at
- 4:36Speaker 3: our opponents and studying their tendencies and we put a
- 4:40Speaker 3: lot of time and energy into trying to create the
- 4:43Speaker 3: matchup we think is going to be most advantageous for us.
- 4:47Speaker 1: Yeah, and you even had John Spetz take a couple
- 4:48Speaker 1: of draws late too.
- 4:50Speaker 3: Well, he's pretty good at it. And when there's a
- 4:54Speaker 3: reason why we do that, sometimes it's because we're already
- 4:57Speaker 3: set up in a defensive zone coverage, or sometimes we're
- 5:00Speaker 3: trying to catch the other team by surprise, and he's
- 5:03Speaker 3: actually pretty good at it. As a defenseman. If you
- 5:05Speaker 3: have a defenseman that can take a draw, it's very
- 5:09Speaker 3: beneficial for you defensively because he's on their center already
- 5:13Speaker 3: immediately and it allows your wingers to get out a
- 5:15Speaker 3: little quicker.
- 5:16Speaker 1: So yeah, that makes sense. Yeah, go ahead, one more
- 5:19Speaker 1: four break.
- 5:20Speaker 2: Tray Scott, freshman defenseman, didn't play the first three games
- 5:23Speaker 2: of the season and now has played the last six.
- 5:25Speaker 2: Was there something that kept him out of the lineup,
- 5:27Speaker 2: because it seems like since he's gotten into the lineup
- 5:30Speaker 2: he hasn't let go of the opportunity.
- 5:33Speaker 3: No, he's done a great job. Yeah, he's earned his
- 5:35Speaker 3: ice time and he's earning more and more ice time.
- 5:39Speaker 3: And I think you know, my philosophy is always I
- 5:44Speaker 3: try to give the veterans and older guys, you know,
- 5:48Speaker 3: a first look. But if someone's playing better, then they're
- 5:53Speaker 3: they're gonna play. And he's he's doing a fantastic job
- 5:56Speaker 3: for us, and both he and Kai bring a off
- 6:00Speaker 3: defensive dynamic to our team that we really haven't had
- 6:04Speaker 3: a lot of in the last five or six years.
- 6:07Speaker 2: Plugging in an Andrew Lucas type gap in a little.
- 6:10Speaker 3: A little bit. Yeah, they're both very offensive minded players
- 6:14Speaker 3: that are comfortable with the puck on their stick. They
- 6:17Speaker 3: don't like throwing the puck away. So it's nice to
- 6:22Speaker 3: have those type of defensemen.
- 6:23Speaker 1: Yeah, it's a good problem to have. All Right, we're
- 6:25Speaker 1: gonna let you take a little bit of a break time.
- 6:27Speaker 1: Muslik and Ethan Gardula interviews that I recorded earlier today
- 6:30Speaker 1: and they're coming up next. We'll start with the goalie
- 6:32Speaker 1: as we're live at Bear Smoke House Barbecue. This is
- 6:34Speaker 1: the yukont Hockey Coaches Show on Learfield
