- October 27 Justice, Mercy, No Oppression Topic: Justice. Scripture: Zechariah 7:9–10 9 “Thus has Yahweh of Armies spoken, saying, ‘Execute true judgment, and show kindness and compassion every man to his brother. 10 Don’t oppress the widow, the fatherless, the foreigner, nor the poor; and let none of you devise evil against his brother in your heart.’” Context People ask Zechariah about continuing a religious fast. God responds by looking beyond ritual to the ethical failures of previous generations: dishonest judgment, lack of mercy, oppression, and evil intentions. Let It Shape Your Life It is possible to care deeply about religious practice and still mistreat people. Zechariah makes that contradiction impossible to ignore. True judgment, kindness, compassion, and protection of people with less power all belong inside faithfulness. Justice here is not an abstract slogan. It is about courts, treatment, access, vulnerability, and what people with power choose not to exploit. Mercy is not softness toward wrongdoing; it is the refusal to use strength without compassion. The passage also moves inward: “don’t devise evil… in your heart.” God cares about systems and motives. That means the question is not only whether we support justice in principle, but whether our decisions are fair when fairness costs us something. Worship becomes credible when the person who prays also refuses to crush the person who has less leverage. Think About It Where does your faith need to become more visible in the way you treat someone with less power, money, status, or influence than you have?
