- 0:00Speaker 1: In my mind, I'm like, I need to be with
- 0:01Speaker 1: her all day, and meanwhile in her mind, she's like,
- 0:03Speaker 1: I don't need to see you until it's time to eat.
- 0:05Speaker 2: As a young male, this is what goes through MARGETA.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Is there a world, Greg, a guy might date your
- 0:09Speaker 2: daughter to hang out with you.
- 0:10Speaker 3: What is something that you feel like you had a
- 0:13Speaker 3: strong opinion about that you feel like you fully changed
- 0:16Speaker 3: your mind on.
- 0:16Speaker 4: Was there anything cooler than when you got your first
- 0:18Speaker 4: raising your lies?
- 0:19Speaker 1: Man? I hope those mistakes happened while they're still under
- 0:23Speaker 1: our roof.
- 0:23Speaker 2: Oh, mister Compton, this is Greg is Jess.
- 0:29Speaker 3: You're just outside doing yard work while they pull in
- 0:32Speaker 3: the driveway.
- 0:32Speaker 1: Because they got you're home right when you come lost
- 0:34Speaker 1: track at first. We're all in such a hurry to
- 0:36Speaker 1: like go to the next thing. Don't apply those standards
- 0:39Speaker 1: to your own kids. I could sit here and talk
- 0:41Speaker 1: about all the things that I've done wrong in parenting
- 0:42Speaker 1: all day. So this is actually a great pod for
- 0:44Speaker 1: me to get on.
- 0:46Speaker 3: Papa Team six. You just heard Greg Olsen. We had
- 0:48Speaker 3: Greg Olsen on for the days this week. We are
- 0:51Speaker 3: happier here beat D six Empty six st six all
- 0:54Speaker 3: the sick goes out there. This is going to be
- 0:56Speaker 3: a phenomenal episode, a phenomenal episode. Greg Olsen was in
- 1:00Speaker 3: town for tight End You, so we had about a
- 1:04Speaker 3: forty five minute scheduled interview for him this morning. When
- 1:07Speaker 3: you're listening to him, it was the am he had
- 1:10Speaker 3: to get out to a golf tournament with George Kittle
- 1:12Speaker 3: and the boys. We pressed him and I think we
- 1:14Speaker 3: got what schef. Did we get an hour out of him? Yeah,
- 1:16Speaker 3: we got a full hour. He had a fun time.
- 1:17Speaker 3: We talked dad life. He's got twins. His oldest is
- 1:21Speaker 3: going to be a freshman in high school. Yeah, he's
- 1:23Speaker 3: got twins. One that's a girl. She's thirteen years old.
- 1:26Speaker 3: She was out here with them. He talks about the
- 1:29Speaker 3: strategy in the game of does she like being out
- 1:32Speaker 3: here with me?
- 1:34Speaker 2: Is she comfortable with me around her? Does she think
- 1:36Speaker 2: I'm cool?
- 1:37Speaker 3: We dive into so much girl dad talk, sports dad talk.
- 1:41Speaker 3: You were going to absolutely love greg Olsen, but we
- 1:44Speaker 3: managed to get him in here for about an hour.
- 1:46Speaker 2: Yeah. It was awestly really good.
- 1:48Speaker 5: It flew by so fast because of how much and
- 1:53Speaker 5: he even talked about it after we wrapped. He was like, man,
- 1:56Speaker 5: wasn't expecting to talk that easily about my kids.
- 2:00Speaker 2: We'd get him.
- 2:01Speaker 3: Going in a couple yeah, yeah, cause he'll generalize or like,
- 2:05Speaker 3: tell us about a situation, man, give us the deattail.
- 2:09Speaker 2: Dive in there.
- 2:10Speaker 5: But then once he like truly realized, oh where this
- 2:14Speaker 5: is really just kind of shooting the ship.
- 2:16Speaker 2: It's this therapy for the dads.
- 2:18Speaker 5: That's what he said outside, That's exactly what he said.
- 2:22Speaker 5: He said that almost felt therapeutic because I don't want
- 2:26Speaker 5: to seem like I have it all figured out. I'm like,
- 2:28Speaker 5: that's the thing, bro, none of us have the shit
- 2:31Speaker 5: figured out. All of Papa Team six knows. This isn't
- 2:34Speaker 5: an expert some expert pod. It's just talking to some dad,
- 2:37Speaker 5: just talking dad life, mostly about failures in our shortcomings,
- 2:42Speaker 5: and we just make it.
- 2:43Speaker 2: We just try to laugh about it. Yes, some serious.
- 2:45Speaker 2: Some we tear up. And he apologized too.
- 2:48Speaker 5: He said, you know, I feel I feel that this
- 2:51Speaker 5: was after we wrap I feel bad because like, honestly,
- 2:54Speaker 5: whenever I talk about myself as a dad, it's usually
- 2:57Speaker 5: just me fucking up.
- 2:58Speaker 2: Man, I'm always fucking up. And we're like, WHOA to
- 3:02Speaker 2: the show, yo, Welcome to the show Welcome to the
- 3:06Speaker 2: big leagues.
- 3:06Speaker 3: But dude, it was awesome hearing about him talk because
- 3:09Speaker 3: it's just him and his thirteen year old daughter out
- 3:11Speaker 3: here in Nashville for tight end to you, and then
- 3:14Speaker 3: hearing him talk about like we're like, hey, when do
- 3:18Speaker 3: we gotta be prepared? Like when do they start like
- 3:21Speaker 3: not liking you? When does it like you start to
- 3:24Speaker 3: put your foot in your mouth when you should be
- 3:25Speaker 3: listening to your wife the middle school drama. You're asking
- 3:28Speaker 3: about the middle school drama? When did you give them
- 3:31Speaker 3: their first phone? How did that go down? How are
- 3:33Speaker 3: the rules and boundaries around the phone when she's now
- 3:37Speaker 3: that she's thirteen getting older? What's it like having her
- 3:40Speaker 3: twin brother and her older brother when they have friends
- 3:44Speaker 3: over knowing that you've coached these athletes, Like what's the
- 3:47Speaker 3: entire dynamic? Like are you prepared for when she gets
- 3:51Speaker 3: into dating life? How's that gonna go crazy?
- 3:54Speaker 5: The roster that he has now that I'm thinking about
- 3:57Speaker 5: his family dynamics of he has both boy and girl.
- 4:01Speaker 5: He's got two boys. Yeah, he's got both boy and
- 4:03Speaker 5: girl and twins. He's got said twins as well. So
- 4:08Speaker 5: he really was all encompassing as far as I know,
- 4:12Speaker 5: the pt sikos and the comments have been get a
- 4:14Speaker 5: boy dad on, Hey, we get rid ends all the time,
- 4:17Speaker 5: I got twins, and we're always sitting here going, oh
- 4:20Speaker 5: my gosh, what would having twins be?
- 4:22Speaker 3: Like, We didn't even really go into the twins thing. Yeah,
- 4:25Speaker 3: because we knew we were short on time. Yeah, yeah,
- 4:28Speaker 3: like we knew when we got here. Your boy was
- 4:29Speaker 3: fashionably late. You'll see at the top of the episode,
- 4:31Speaker 3: was doing kids stuff.
- 4:32Speaker 2: At home as we all are.
- 4:35Speaker 3: But we were short on time because he had to
- 4:36Speaker 3: get out to a true bad or to golf. So
- 4:39Speaker 3: it was like, yeah, Greg could easily Again we said
- 4:42Speaker 3: it with our dads a couple of weeks ago, but
- 4:44Speaker 3: he could be a three hour podetor we were just
- 4:45Speaker 3: talking shop because he has a polethora of experience. Now, yeah,
- 4:49Speaker 3: knowing that his youngest, his daughter the twin boy and
- 4:53Speaker 3: girl are thirteen and his oldest is going to be
- 4:56Speaker 3: a freshman high school. And Greg also, if you guys
- 4:59Speaker 3: want to consume more dad talk or sports dad talk,
- 5:02Speaker 3: he has a channel called youth Ink Sports Yeah awesome
- 5:04Speaker 3: follow go subscribe to his channel. They have vlogs of
- 5:07Speaker 3: him coaching on Game Day, all things revolving around youth
- 5:11Speaker 3: sports essentially.
- 5:12Speaker 5: Yes, and for our we'll look into it section this week.
- 5:17Speaker 5: Immediately after the podcast, he was bringing up his channels
- 5:22Speaker 5: talking about this show and.
- 5:24Speaker 2: We got to get a collaboration.
- 5:25Speaker 5: Go yes, and we were teasing that and he I mean,
- 5:28Speaker 5: you know, his eyes didn't like pop out of their sockets.
- 5:30Speaker 5: But he was like, yeah, like that's a no brain.
- 5:34Speaker 3: His eyes didn't pop out of his sockets. Because we
- 5:35Speaker 3: had a fun little night before at the concert. Yeah,
- 5:39Speaker 3: Taylor Swift shutting it down. I said that in a way,
- 5:42Speaker 3: and we were having some good convos to where.
- 5:46Speaker 2: I know my man was operating on he when he.
- 5:48Speaker 5: Walked down the door, as was I, And I said
- 5:51Speaker 5: that in a way of in case Greg is listening
- 5:53Speaker 5: to this, we did go like and he was like, yeah,
- 5:56Speaker 5: y'all come and we're going to do a blog.
- 5:58Speaker 2: I never said that he'd be fired up.
- 6:03Speaker 3: Yeah, but it is awesome. You're gonna enjoy it. We
- 6:06Speaker 3: had fan questions. You guys who're shot in questions on Instagram.
- 6:09Speaker 3: I believe a lot of them came in. Yeah, we
- 6:11Speaker 3: get those answers with Dad Hacks stuff. We're cracking cold.
- 6:13Speaker 2: Ones too.
- 6:14Speaker 3: We hit some segments, but a lot of this was
- 6:16Speaker 3: just around us. Pepper and Greg with brother tell us
- 6:20Speaker 3: what's to come now that his daughter's thirteen. We're both
- 6:23Speaker 3: obviously Sherman and I were girl dads. We got we
- 6:26Speaker 3: did get into some good boy dad stuff and some
- 6:29Speaker 3: sports talk and everything else. This is a fun one.
- 6:32Speaker 3: You guys are gonna enjoy it. Make sure you are
- 6:34Speaker 3: watching right now. Subscribe, leave comments, follow our channels, Spotify, Apple, anywhere.
- 6:44Speaker 2: You get your pots.
- 6:45Speaker 3: Wherever you're listening right now, whether you're in your truck,

- 6:54Speaker 3: channel and leave comments along the way. Take out the
- 6:57Speaker 3: take Out the trash Man. Enjoy this interview with Greg Olsen.
- 7:02Speaker 1: No, I'll tell you what no one tells you. I've
- 7:04Speaker 1: been coming to TEU now for six years and I
- 7:07Speaker 1: got to come with my daughter she's thirteen, which was
- 7:10Speaker 1: an awesome daddy daughter trip. I'll tell you what though,
- 7:15Speaker 1: like no one tells you how hard single parenting a
- 7:18Speaker 1: thirteen year old daughter when you actually like and then
- 7:20Speaker 1: I have some things I need to do, you know,
- 7:22Speaker 1: like I was stressed, like should I be with her
- 7:25Speaker 1: all the time? Should I never be with her? Does
- 7:27Speaker 1: she want me with her? Does she not want me
- 7:29Speaker 1: with her? I'm just talking about these last two days,
- 7:33Speaker 1: like I don't have like my wife's not here to
- 7:35Speaker 1: like take her, like I'm the only human being here
- 7:38Speaker 1: responsible for her, but like she's not a baby anymore?
- 7:41Speaker 4: Does she need me all day?
- 7:43Speaker 1: Because I in my mind, I'm like, I need to
- 7:44Speaker 1: be with her all day. And meanwhile in her mind,
- 7:46Speaker 1: she's like, I don't need to see you until it's
- 7:48Speaker 1: time to eat.
- 7:49Speaker 2: Do you know what I mean?
- 7:49Speaker 1: So, I don't know where is that middle ground. I'll
- 7:51Speaker 1: tell you what it's been a it's been a forty
- 7:55Speaker 1: eight hours of learning for me.
- 7:57Speaker 2: When how often has it just been you two? Rarely?
- 8:01Speaker 4: Rarely?
- 8:01Speaker 2: So when was the last time?
- 8:02Speaker 1: So she's thirteen, now, I bet you maybe within the
- 8:06Speaker 1: last year or two she came. I took her for
- 8:09Speaker 1: her birthday to La for one of my rams games.
- 8:12Speaker 1: So it's just the two of us, different environment, like
- 8:15Speaker 1: not a lot of social requirements. Right, I'm out there
- 8:17Speaker 1: for my game, I'm broadcasting, I'm going to meetings. She's
- 8:20Speaker 1: hanging in the hotel room and then she's sitting in
- 8:22Speaker 1: the booth while I call it so not as much
- 8:24Speaker 1: like socializing dinners, Taylor Swift concerts, TEU football practice, like different,
- 8:32Speaker 1: he's a different vibe.
- 8:33Speaker 4: But I feel like I passed.
- 8:35Speaker 1: I feel like I did a really good job single
- 8:38Speaker 1: parenting for two year oldest. No, she's my twin. She's
- 8:43Speaker 1: technically tied for youngest. I have a fifteen year old.
- 8:46Speaker 1: I have a fifteen year old son and thirteen year
- 8:49Speaker 1: old twins. My boy twin TJ is like a minute
- 8:53Speaker 1: and a half older than her, so I guess technically
- 8:55Speaker 1: she's the youngest, but I just say they like tied.
- 8:58Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, it was just who got grabbed out for first?
- 9:00Speaker 3: In your brain as a girl, dad, what makes you
- 9:06Speaker 3: feel like it was a successful trip? When question you're
- 9:12Speaker 3: telling us, I think it went well, and I'm like, okay,
- 9:14Speaker 3: for the girl that's out there, well, it's actually tilling.
- 9:17Speaker 2: You'll have to be like, I think she had a
- 9:18Speaker 2: good time.
- 9:19Speaker 1: I think lots of photos, lots of pictures that she posts.
- 9:23Speaker 1: That's obviously a huge deal with these teenage boys and girls,
- 9:26Speaker 1: but specifically the teenage girls.
- 9:28Speaker 4: Great experiences. Went to bed last night very happy.
- 9:32Speaker 1: Got a big hug, got smiles, have not had any
- 9:35Speaker 1: like teenage girl sass drama, eye rolls. Like she's been
- 9:41Speaker 1: she's been happy, she's been appreciative. We've had good experiences together.
- 9:47Speaker 1: I'll take that as a win, Like I don't need it,
- 9:49Speaker 1: doesn't need to be a lot, Like you just got
- 9:51Speaker 1: to go home on top and you'll just take it all.
- 9:54Speaker 1: Dads get that, like you're not looking to be mom
- 9:56Speaker 1: because you never will be mom, but just don't be
- 9:58Speaker 1: a disaster.
- 9:59Speaker 2: Yeah, I think it's a win.
- 10:01Speaker 5: But you also you have the opportunity to bring her
- 10:03Speaker 5: in the same atmosphere as Taylor Swift.
- 10:06Speaker 2: So I'm a hero just like that's a massive win. Yeah.
- 10:09Speaker 1: I mean again, the bar I'm crossing was not overly difficult.
- 10:12Speaker 1: I brought her to Nashville, right, I brought her to Nashville.
- 10:16Speaker 1: She got to get all dressed up and go to
- 10:18Speaker 1: two nights of fun parties and the last one she
- 10:20Speaker 1: got to watch Taylor Swift sing with Landy Wilson from
- 10:23Speaker 1: the front row. Like how much did I do or
- 10:25Speaker 1: how much did I just pick a great week?
- 10:27Speaker 2: Right?
- 10:28Speaker 4: I didn't take her?
- 10:29Speaker 2: Yeah, but still like massive win.
- 10:31Speaker 5: It's a huge win and hanging out with dad led
- 10:33Speaker 5: to that exactly, like you are the driving connects.
- 10:37Speaker 1: When I hang with Dad, we do cool shit. I'm
- 10:39Speaker 1: hoping that connection gets like reinforced.
- 10:42Speaker 3: Yeah, and we've all we've all been young sons just
- 10:45Speaker 3: watching our parents, Like I'd imagine her seeing you from
- 10:49Speaker 3: Afar too, like just seeing like all the relationships you have,
- 10:52Speaker 3: Like she just gotta I'm sure she knows, like, Yo,
- 10:54Speaker 3: my dad, my low ki, my dad's a badass. Yeah.
- 10:58Speaker 1: I I hope my boys think that because I have
- 11:02Speaker 1: that conversation with my wife all the time. Like if
- 11:04Speaker 1: I have one regret about my career, is I wish
- 11:07Speaker 1: I played a little bit longer or had the kids
- 11:10Speaker 1: a little bit earlier that the boy especially the boys
- 11:12Speaker 1: were older and like experience, I retired. They were probably
- 11:16Speaker 1: six five. They were young though, Yeah, decent, but like,
- 11:21Speaker 1: how sick would it be if like your fifteen year
- 11:23Speaker 1: old son, now I would have had to play forever
- 11:25Speaker 1: but yeah, or just knocked up my wife in college either,
- 11:28Speaker 1: But how fun would it have been if you brought
- 11:31Speaker 1: like your teenage boys like to football and to the
- 11:35Speaker 1: locker room and they're walking at the gym, you know,
- 11:37Speaker 1: walking out of the stadium after you go for one
- 11:38Speaker 1: twenty and it's like they get to go to school,
- 11:41Speaker 1: but they're in seventh grade.
- 11:43Speaker 2: Yeah, we can't all be Philip Rivers. No fair fair.
- 11:47Speaker 1: But like the boys, I'm like I remind them all
- 11:50Speaker 1: the time. I'm like, you realize, Like I know, you know,
- 11:52Speaker 1: the dad of now were like I can't run in
- 11:54Speaker 1: the backyard without the fear of blowing out my achilles,
- 11:57Speaker 1: Like don't get it twisted now back in the day,
- 11:59Speaker 1: like I could.
- 11:59Speaker 4: Go oh, and you're like, no, you were never fast.
- 12:02Speaker 2: I'm like, there's too much tape out there, too.
- 12:05Speaker 4: Much, like pull it up. I don't care about that.
- 12:08Speaker 1: For my daughter, like I don't need her to think
- 12:10Speaker 1: her dad, I need her to think that her dad
- 12:12Speaker 1: loves her more than any guy on this earth will
- 12:15Speaker 1: ever love her. And no matter how old she gets,
- 12:18Speaker 1: she's gonna have to just deal with like I'm gonna
- 12:20Speaker 1: give you a hug, and I'm gonna ask you to
- 12:22Speaker 1: hold my hand, and we're gonna take a picture together.
- 12:24Speaker 1: And I know one day I'm gonna embarrass you. I
- 12:27Speaker 1: probably already am, but too bad.
- 12:29Speaker 5: Yeah, as a non ex NFL athlete, it actually makes
- 12:35Speaker 5: me feel so good that you face the struggle of
- 12:39Speaker 5: not being cool to your kids like that, because I
- 12:43Speaker 5: know Will has brought up multiple times. Ru's growing up
- 12:46Speaker 5: so fast, and he's like, when's the last time she's
- 12:50Speaker 5: gonna want to hold my hand? When's the last time
- 12:52Speaker 5: she's gonna want me to pick her up? We got
- 12:54Speaker 5: to ask him, Yes, dude, it's hard. We okay, So
- 12:58Speaker 5: eleven month old daughter Scar she's about to turn one
- 13:01Speaker 5: year on July third, sick and how old?
- 13:04Speaker 4: God, she's a patriot.
- 13:06Speaker 2: Yeah's a Patriot's patriot pre firecracker baby. Yeah. Scotty's nineteen
- 13:10Speaker 2: months and Ruges turned four in April.
- 13:12Speaker 4: You guys are in the girl.
- 13:13Speaker 1: They're the boys are great, Like, don't get me wrong,
- 13:16Speaker 1: Like all the kids are awesome in their own rights
- 13:18Speaker 1: and whatnot. But like there's something people tell you and
- 13:21Speaker 1: you don't really know until you do it. Like there's
- 13:22Speaker 1: something different about a dad and a daughter relationship. Yeah,
- 13:27Speaker 1: it's just it's just different. And I don't know why.
- 13:31Speaker 1: I don't know the reasons behind it, but like it's
- 13:34Speaker 1: just different.
- 13:35Speaker 2: Put us on game. We need games.
- 13:37Speaker 1: I don't have any of the answers, but I'll answer
- 13:40Speaker 1: the you have experience, you have brewing everything else fire away?
- 13:45Speaker 3: When does it start? When do things start to shift
- 13:49Speaker 3: like from you? Like because right now ruse four, so
- 13:52Speaker 3: I'm a superhero, Like they're obsessed with you. I'm putting
- 13:54Speaker 3: ten kisses in the hand every day.
- 13:56Speaker 2: We have to do this.
- 13:56Speaker 3: It's ire monologue back and forth before I leave the
- 14:00Speaker 3: But when does that start to shift to where? Because
- 14:03Speaker 3: you as dads, like as guys, like we care so
- 14:07Speaker 3: much about what our daughters think. Yeah, and when I'm
- 14:12Speaker 3: just wondering, like when it starts to take a turn
- 14:15Speaker 3: for like, man, I kind of don't know what's going
- 14:16Speaker 3: on in her head right now, Like am I doing yeah?
- 14:19Speaker 2: Like does she just like oh yeah, yeah, Yeah.
- 14:21Speaker 1: It's a hard I don't know. If I have like
- 14:23Speaker 1: a firm number, I will tell you at thirteen it's uh,
- 14:28Speaker 1: everything now is just a little bit different. You know,
- 14:30Speaker 1: when they're free four, you're picking them up, you're holding
- 14:33Speaker 1: their hand. They want to in the mornings, they wake up,
- 14:35Speaker 1: they want to get in bed with you, and and
- 14:37Speaker 1: like you don't even think about it through your little baby.
- 14:39Speaker 1: And it's no different if it was your boys or
- 14:41Speaker 1: your girls. It just it's all the same, right, Like
- 14:43Speaker 1: you'd walk into their room unannounced and never even those
- 14:48Speaker 1: days are over, I would say having a little bit
- 14:51Speaker 1: of like boundary set and just having some awareness as
- 14:54Speaker 1: a dad that sometimes mom needs to be the tip
- 14:58Speaker 1: of the spear. Mom needs to go check on her
- 15:01Speaker 1: getting ready for bed. I would say, like in our house,
- 15:05Speaker 1: probably started like ten twelve.
- 15:07Speaker 3: Yeah, like were you're coming down stairs and you're like, hey,
- 15:09Speaker 3: when did this happen?
- 15:10Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 15:11Speaker 4: Yeah, so like maybe click ten.
- 15:13Speaker 1: Like they're in fifth grade now, they're into like getting
- 15:15Speaker 1: close to middle school. Like things are a little bit different.
- 15:18Speaker 1: Their bodies are changing, their interests are changing. But like today,
- 15:23Speaker 1: like I remember vividly one day, like having a realization
- 15:27Speaker 1: being like I can't just keep like walking in her bedroom.
- 15:31Speaker 1: Like as much as it's like, oh it's my daughter,
- 15:33Speaker 1: I'm gonna go check on her before bed, it's like.
- 15:36Speaker 4: Can dad come in?
- 15:38Speaker 2: Hold on?
- 15:40Speaker 4: Like and I it's just it's a I didn't grow
- 15:42Speaker 4: up with sisters.
- 15:43Speaker 1: I grew up in a house of all boys, where
- 15:45Speaker 1: like every room was just left open. People changed in
- 15:49Speaker 1: the kitchen, people walked around and they're like there was
- 15:52Speaker 1: no it was a locker room. Yeah, in our house,
- 15:54Speaker 1: my poor mother, a husband who was a high school
- 15:57Speaker 1: football coach, and three boys.
- 15:58Speaker 4: Like it was a wild experience. There was no boundaries.
- 16:03Speaker 1: We are now like fully into boundary mode, not only
- 16:06Speaker 1: like dad daughter stuff, but like brothers, brothers friends. We
- 16:11Speaker 1: have a sleepover tonight. When they were six, it was
- 16:14Speaker 1: cute because all the boys and girls they were friends
- 16:15Speaker 1: at school.
- 16:16Speaker 4: They'd run around. It's not cute anymore. They're thirteen.
- 16:19Speaker 1: Yeah, and all of a sudden, your brothers have five
- 16:21Speaker 1: teenage boys over the house. Well, guess what, Talbot's going
- 16:25Speaker 1: to top my daughter's names, Talbot. Talbot's going to grandma
- 16:27Speaker 1: and grandpa. Like it's just it's just different, yea. Even
- 16:31Speaker 1: now sharing a hotel room here in Nashville, Like, Okay,
- 16:35Speaker 1: daddy's got you go shower, change to your stuff. Daddy
- 16:38Speaker 1: will sit out here in the other like little side room.
- 16:40Speaker 1: Let me know when you're done. But then I need
- 16:42Speaker 1: you to either like go to your friend's room or
- 16:44Speaker 1: go out in the other area, and I'll go.
- 16:47Speaker 4: Shower and get dressed. Obviously with the boys.
- 16:49Speaker 1: When I'm on the road with the boys or at
- 16:51Speaker 1: a baseball tournament for two weeks with the boys.
- 16:53Speaker 2: Just the boys, just with the boys.
- 16:55Speaker 1: So again I think I think it is though all
- 16:59Speaker 1: joking aside, I do think it's good for them to
- 17:01Speaker 1: understand like privacy and boundaries and the way they look
- 17:06Speaker 1: at themselves and the way they value them Like, I
- 17:09Speaker 1: do think those are valuable lessons that you can have
- 17:11Speaker 1: in your house that then you hope they take out
- 17:14Speaker 1: when they're older and they're you know, doing whatever they're doing,
- 17:18Speaker 1: Like they need to learn that, like it's okay to
- 17:21Speaker 1: have some self respect. And I don't know, we're figuring
- 17:25Speaker 1: all this girl stuff out as we go, but it's awesome.
- 17:29Speaker 4: Can I can I ask?
- 17:30Speaker 5: As far as Scarlet getting older, the thing I worry
- 17:35Speaker 5: about the most is the drama at school with friends.
- 17:39Speaker 5: Yea like girl friendship relationships because I know nothing about
- 17:44Speaker 5: it as grown up in a house with all boys.
- 17:48Speaker 5: Is it something where you kind of take a back
- 17:50Speaker 5: seat and if she invites you in and gives you
- 17:53Speaker 5: trust to like listen and deal with stuff, how do
- 17:56Speaker 5: you deal with mom?
- 17:59Speaker 2: Mom?
- 18:00Speaker 4: He's a tip of the spirit. Yeah, mom is much
- 18:02Speaker 4: more in tune with Mom.
- 18:05Speaker 1: Gets much better, Like car ride home from school, especially
- 18:08Speaker 1: from my daughter, the boys tell you nothing you know.
- 18:10Speaker 4: How boys are, Like how a school good?
- 18:12Speaker 2: Yeah? How is practice good? Okay?
- 18:15Speaker 1: They could have gotten in three fights and gotten expelled,
- 18:17Speaker 1: and like you would.
- 18:18Speaker 2: Never know my daughter.
- 18:21Speaker 1: The girls tell you a lot more so that's how
- 18:22Speaker 1: we know most of the scoop in school. But she's
- 18:25Speaker 1: really good at being open with my wife. She's very
- 18:27Speaker 1: honest with her. She knows when there's girl drama, she
- 18:30Speaker 1: knows if boys like her, she knows who her crush is.
- 18:33Speaker 1: She knows, like my wife gets all that information, she
- 18:37Speaker 1: picks and chooses what she tells me my daughter. Meaning
- 18:40Speaker 1: so I get debriefed from mom, and some of the
- 18:43Speaker 1: times when I get debriefed from my wife, it's like, hey,
- 18:46Speaker 1: just keep that between us, like that's our conversation. And
- 18:48Speaker 1: other times I'll go follow up and have like a
- 18:50Speaker 1: conversation in the car, drive into a practice or school
- 18:53Speaker 1: with her.
- 18:53Speaker 3: But I'm.
- 18:55Speaker 1: As you guys know, like the relationships, especially at this age,
- 18:59Speaker 1: teenage girl, there's a lot going on. There's a lot
- 19:01Speaker 1: of new thoughts, a lot of new impulses. Social media
- 19:05Speaker 1: is a big thing, like oh god, friends posted you
- 19:08Speaker 1: know who got invited to a party. But then the
- 19:10Speaker 1: people you know back in our day, like you had
- 19:12Speaker 1: a party, invited who you wanted, and unless somebody told
- 19:15Speaker 1: everyone Monday in school, nobody really knew who was there.
- 19:18Speaker 2: Yeah, those days were over.
- 19:19Speaker 1: You know who was there, how long they were there,
- 19:21Speaker 1: who they took a picture with, what they were wearing,
- 19:24Speaker 1: you know, every you know everything.
- 19:26Speaker 4: Yeah, so there's no secrets anymore.
- 19:28Speaker 1: So, you know, there's feelings that are hurt, there's kids
- 19:30Speaker 1: that feel left out, and there's definitely more of that
- 19:33Speaker 1: with with the girls than we feel, at least in
- 19:35Speaker 1: our house. With then with the boys. Talbot's not a
- 19:37Speaker 1: huge drama person. She doesn't like it. She doesn't really
- 19:40Speaker 1: encourage it. We try to continue to push, like don't
- 19:43Speaker 1: get involved in all that stuff, like just let it go.
- 19:47Speaker 1: But uh yeah, right wrong or indifferent the the some
- 19:52Speaker 1: of the greatest things about raising a daughter that are
- 19:54Speaker 1: so easy are the really big challenges of raising two sons.
- 19:57Speaker 1: And then on the flip side, some of the easy
- 19:59Speaker 1: things about the boys, and they get into a fight
- 20:02Speaker 1: with their buddy by Monday, just like the rest of us,
- 20:04Speaker 1: it's like it never happened. With the girls, it's like
- 20:06Speaker 1: four weeks of conversation and parents and talking and how
- 20:10Speaker 1: are we going to work through this? I'm like, they're
- 20:11Speaker 1: in seventh.
- 20:11Speaker 4: Grade, their work through it. It's over.
- 20:14Speaker 1: So there's good and bad and challenges and ease with
- 20:19Speaker 1: both of them. But that's the magic of it all.
- 20:22Speaker 1: Like that's the fun of it all. And especially for me.
- 20:25Speaker 1: My wife grew up with only a sister, so like
- 20:27Speaker 1: girl households.
- 20:29Speaker 2: Is all she knows.
- 20:31Speaker 4: Yeah, so I'm really like the man left out.
- 20:34Speaker 1: I'm literally experiencing all these things in real time as
- 20:38Speaker 1: a dude who's only known boy locker rooms and boy households.
- 20:42Speaker 1: And my wife's like, you got a lot to learn,
- 20:44Speaker 1: and I'm like, yes, I do, and I'm here to
- 20:46Speaker 1: learn it, and I just please don't let me screw
- 20:49Speaker 1: it up.
- 20:49Speaker 3: And like, not only you grew up around boys in
- 20:51Speaker 3: the locker room stuff and everything else, but you're also
- 20:54Speaker 3: a dad who really cares, like all these sports you
- 20:57Speaker 3: do as much as a family man you are. I'm
- 21:00Speaker 3: sure there's a lot of career balance issues that go on,
- 21:03Speaker 3: but caring so much, what is a what is like
- 21:07Speaker 3: a dad loss you've had where you've gotten the tea
- 21:10Speaker 3: from mom and with the boys, you almost know how
- 21:14Speaker 3: to walk in and kind of address the room or
- 21:17Speaker 3: kind of just be the guy for them. But as
- 21:19Speaker 3: a dad mom tells you some tea, I'm almost putting
- 21:22Speaker 3: it in my shoes. I would almost be curious, like, man,
- 21:24Speaker 3: how could I work my way into a conversation with
- 21:27Speaker 3: my daughter even though my wife saying I need to like, hey.
- 21:29Speaker 2: This is between you and me. Yeah, yeah, but daughter
- 21:32Speaker 2: comes down for breakfast.
- 21:33Speaker 3: You're trying to like you're trying to find your way
- 21:34Speaker 3: into that conversation. What's been like a dad loss you've
- 21:38Speaker 3: had in the realm of like sticking your foot in
- 21:40Speaker 3: your mouth.
- 21:41Speaker 1: Yes, So that's a great question, and it's so true
- 21:43Speaker 1: because I'm I don't like letting things linger, Like I
- 21:46Speaker 1: don't like letting things fester and linger, and I'm a
- 21:49Speaker 1: big believer, like, let's nip it in the bud now
- 21:52Speaker 1: head on the direct communication and whether we ever, you know,
- 21:57Speaker 1: whether it was you and I or me and my
- 21:59Speaker 1: sons or whoever, like you're going to know exactly where
- 22:01Speaker 1: I stand. We're going to get to the root of
- 22:03Speaker 1: what the issue is and then we can move on
- 22:05Speaker 1: and it's addressed and we don't need to continue to
- 22:07Speaker 1: let it kind.
- 22:08Speaker 4: Of carry forward.
- 22:10Speaker 1: So with the boys very direct issue at school, issue
- 22:14Speaker 1: with a friend, a grade on a paper, how I
- 22:17Speaker 1: think they're you know, working for their sports teams or
- 22:19Speaker 1: the game, whatever the whatever. The different parenting thing is
- 22:22Speaker 1: like I just go at them like right in the.
- 22:25Speaker 2: Moment, and.
- 22:27Speaker 1: That's just the way it is. We're going to have
- 22:29Speaker 1: a man to man talk. We're going to address it.
- 22:31Speaker 1: I'm going to tell you exactly how I feel, tell
- 22:32Speaker 1: you why I think you're doing good bad in between,
- 22:35Speaker 1: and move on. When something's going on with my daughter,
- 22:38Speaker 1: typically my wife's like the first to know, like what
- 22:40Speaker 1: the what the issue is, or I want to jump
- 22:43Speaker 1: immediately right in and be like, let's just address it
- 22:45Speaker 1: right this second, and she's like, now is not the time.
- 22:49Speaker 1: I'm like, now is always the time. Why She's like,
- 22:51Speaker 1: we'll talk about it in the morning, and I'm like,
- 22:53Speaker 1: I'm not going to sleep, you know what I mean.
- 22:56Speaker 1: My brain doesn't work like that. But I'll be running
- 22:59Speaker 1: through scenarios in my brain all night. We need to
- 23:01Speaker 1: address this right now.
- 23:04Speaker 2: You can't tell you my daughter shruggling expectation.
- 23:06Speaker 1: Well, I'll tell you and I'll tell you when you
- 23:08Speaker 1: get home. I'm like, what, No, you need to call
- 23:10Speaker 1: me immediately and tell me what's going.
- 23:11Speaker 4: On like that. That's hard for me.
- 23:16Speaker 1: That is just I'm not I'm not a procrastinator in
- 23:19Speaker 1: that world because I'm like mental and the longer it lingers,
- 23:24Speaker 1: I almost manifest it. It's something even worse in my
- 23:27Speaker 1: own brain. And so that's why I need to just
- 23:29Speaker 1: like address it right now in the moment, no matter
- 23:32Speaker 1: how good or bad it is. Let's have this conversation,
- 23:34Speaker 1: address how we're going to move forward, and we all
- 23:36Speaker 1: can move on. That's not always the right path. That's
- 23:40Speaker 1: not always the right path for my boys, it's not
- 23:41Speaker 1: always the right path for my marriage. It's not always
- 23:44Speaker 1: the right path with my daughter. So that's something that
- 23:47Speaker 1: my wife's really good at, like knowing when's the time
- 23:50Speaker 1: to go into it, and when's the time to just
- 23:52Speaker 1: like give them some space and like let them catch
- 23:54Speaker 1: their breath and we'll circle back to it in the
- 23:56Speaker 1: morning or tonight at dinner or when we're just alone
- 23:59Speaker 1: in the call. Like I want to have the conversation
- 24:01Speaker 1: in the middle of the ball. Yeah, I'm like, I
- 24:03Speaker 1: don't care, let's do it right now. She's like, this
- 24:05Speaker 1: is not the time, and I'm like you're right, but
- 24:08Speaker 1: when I don't, I've never known waiting for the time,
- 24:10Speaker 1: like everything's the right time. So I have to improve
- 24:15Speaker 1: a little bit in like my self awareness about that
- 24:17Speaker 1: kind of stuff, and I'm trying. Fortunately, my wife, her
- 24:21Speaker 1: uh social intelligence and emotional intelligence is a lot of
- 24:25Speaker 1: the times a lot better than mine.
- 24:26Speaker 3: Are you able to talk about a situation that you've
- 24:28Speaker 3: just royally messed up?
- 24:30Speaker 2: Oh?
- 24:30Speaker 4: I mess up a lot?
- 24:31Speaker 3: Yeah, I stanned out and you're like, oh, yeah, it's
- 24:35Speaker 3: this is yeah with the wife.
- 24:36Speaker 1: Was you know, a lot a lot of mine, unfortunately,
- 24:39Speaker 1: and fortunately revolve around like sports. You guys know obviously
- 24:43Speaker 1: do a lot of the stuff with you sports, and
- 24:44Speaker 1: we talk about it, and I'm the first to raise
- 24:46Speaker 1: my hand and be like I'm the one out here
- 24:48Speaker 1: like having these conversations with people, and like we're offering
- 24:51Speaker 1: all this advice, but I'm like the first one to
- 24:53Speaker 1: be like, ninety nine percent of this.
- 24:55Speaker 4: Advice should be dhre to by me, you know.
- 24:57Speaker 2: What I mean, Like if we're not expert.
- 25:00Speaker 1: So I do not pretend I'm like the interviewer for myself.
- 25:04Speaker 1: I always joke like it's my It's like I'm going
- 25:06Speaker 1: through like my own like psychiatry, psychology, whatever, to go
- 25:11Speaker 1: through all the therapy my own like therapy, and then
- 25:14Speaker 1: if you want to like listen in and try to
- 25:15Speaker 1: gain some stuff, great, But like I'm almost doing it
- 25:17Speaker 1: more because I keep sucking everything up. So that's that's
- 25:22Speaker 1: just kind of the reality of it. So I'm I'm
- 25:24Speaker 1: trying to get better. I'm trying to not be so hard,
- 25:27Speaker 1: but a lot of it is typically probably through the
- 25:29Speaker 1: sports stuff. Like it's hard for me to understand how
- 25:33Speaker 1: anyone would do any do things different like other than
- 25:36Speaker 1: how I did it, Like I only know doing things
- 25:39Speaker 1: obsessive and like full till and all in, and the
- 25:43Speaker 1: notion that other people don't necessarily always want to do
- 25:46Speaker 1: that is hard for me to wrap my head around
- 25:47Speaker 1: at times, even my own kids. So that's been, uh,
- 25:50Speaker 1: that's been something I'm trying to improve on. Like just
- 25:54Speaker 1: because it was the way I did it doesn't mean
- 25:56Speaker 1: it's healthy and doesn't mean it's the way I should
- 25:57Speaker 1: want my kids to do it. But in the heat
- 26:00Speaker 1: of moments, it's hard for me to disconnect those two things.
- 26:03Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, what is what is something that you feel
- 26:09Speaker 3: like you had a strong opinion about, could be a
- 26:13Speaker 3: couple of years ago, it could be a few years
- 26:14Speaker 3: ago that you feel like you've fully changed your mind on.
- 26:18Speaker 1: I mean, the first one that comes to mind is like,
- 26:21Speaker 1: there's no fighting like social media, especially with the teenagers
- 26:25Speaker 1: right and their interest in willingness to share photos and
- 26:29Speaker 1: share every aspect of what they're doing. I think if
- 26:31Speaker 1: you would ask me as a young dad with a
- 26:33Speaker 1: two or three year old on the plane, it's like,
- 26:36Speaker 1: we are not going to be the tablet parents. We
- 26:38Speaker 1: are not going to be the parents who kids have
- 26:40Speaker 1: phones and there's no reason a thirteen year old girl
- 26:42Speaker 1: needs to have Instagram and you know whatever. And I
- 26:46Speaker 1: think as you start entering, I think oftentimes you're the
- 26:50Speaker 1: biggest critic of things that you've yet to experience and
- 26:53Speaker 1: you've yet to really enter that world. And then you
- 26:55Speaker 1: go okay, like, at some point, these kids are going
- 26:59Speaker 1: to get it. At some point they're gonna have social
- 27:02Speaker 1: media and they're gonna have phones. I think the big
- 27:05Speaker 1: realization that we've had in our family is like, wouldn't
- 27:08Speaker 1: you rather go through all those things when they're still
- 27:11Speaker 1: home with you?
- 27:12Speaker 2: Right, Like where.
- 27:14Speaker 1: Hopefully they don't post anything inappropriate, but things happen, Like,
- 27:18Speaker 1: I hope those mistakes happen while they're still under our roof.
- 27:21Speaker 1: I hope, because what you see a lot of is.
- 27:24Speaker 4: You reject it. You reject it, you reject it. Well,
- 27:26Speaker 4: it's coming at some point.
- 27:27Speaker 1: When you're no longer in charge, right, they're no longer
- 27:30Speaker 1: under your roof, and then sometimes the lid pops off.
- 27:33Speaker 1: So like social media and that stuff, like our kids
- 27:35Speaker 1: have it, and we put limits on it, we have timers,
- 27:38Speaker 1: we have we're pretty adamant about, like what they're allowed
- 27:40Speaker 1: to share the pictures, but like we're not going to
- 27:43Speaker 1: sit here and lie to ourselves. My teenage daughter is
- 27:45Speaker 1: going to send five hundred pictures and snaps to her
- 27:48Speaker 1: friends of last night's party and pictures and what she's wearing,
- 27:51Speaker 1: like it's gonna happen.
- 27:53Speaker 2: Do I love it?
- 27:54Speaker 3: No?
- 27:55Speaker 4: Do I love what girls wear?
- 27:56Speaker 2: These?
- 27:56Speaker 1: I always joke my life has turned into my daughter
- 27:59Speaker 1: wears what I wish my wife would wear, and my
- 28:01Speaker 1: wife wears what I wish my daughter would wear. And
- 28:04Speaker 1: that's like the perfect way to summarize like my current
- 28:06Speaker 1: situation in life. But like if you teach them boundaries
- 28:11Speaker 1: and you teach them morals, and values and self respect,
- 28:15Speaker 1: which obviously is a huge one for all the kids.
- 28:18Speaker 1: The realities of the world are going to be out
- 28:20Speaker 1: there no matter how much you try to fight them.
- 28:22Speaker 1: You're not going to fight other people's battles. You're not
- 28:24Speaker 1: going to change other people's household rules. You got to
- 28:26Speaker 1: worry about your kids and what you control, but they're
- 28:30Speaker 1: going to enter the real world whether you like it
- 28:32Speaker 1: or not, and you can't control all those aspects are
- 28:37Speaker 1: our audience.
- 28:38Speaker 5: We call Papa Team six, and then there's Pt. Sikos,
- 28:42Speaker 5: and then you have Mama Team six, Milk Team six.
- 28:46Speaker 5: They know that Will and I constantly say we're not
- 28:50Speaker 5: experts on the show, Like, no part of us coming
- 28:54Speaker 5: on here and talking do we ever say, hey, this
- 28:57Speaker 5: is the way to do it.
- 28:57Speaker 2: This is blah blah blah.
- 28:59Speaker 5: So I think a lot of listeners have been asking
- 29:03Speaker 5: Will and I questions that involve like their teenage kids
- 29:08Speaker 5: that we just have we have no experience. What if
- 29:11Speaker 5: you don't mind, like how old were your kids when
- 29:14Speaker 5: you allowed them to have their first smartphone? And like
- 29:18Speaker 5: what did that transition look like?
- 29:20Speaker 3: Yeah, I think that's a great question because just for
- 29:23Speaker 3: just context on Greg, this is a perfect example of
- 29:26Speaker 3: like Greg, yesterday we were at Tighten You. Tighten You's
- 29:29Speaker 3: got some more entertainment value to it than it has
- 29:32Speaker 3: in years past. Hearing Greg talk about Tighten You with
- 29:35Speaker 3: all the music and the people and the cameras here
- 29:37Speaker 3: and Bruce Kittle talk about Tighten You, Like these.
- 29:40Speaker 2: Guys are like old souls that love just ball.
- 29:43Speaker 3: You're like, when we're going to get to the ball,
- 29:45Speaker 3: Greg's like, I just hope these next three hours, all
- 29:47Speaker 3: the tight ends we have here, I just hope they
- 29:50Speaker 3: get something out of us playing football. So when you
- 29:53Speaker 3: asked that question, I think it's an awesome question because
- 29:56Speaker 3: even when you're allowing them to do this, I know,
- 29:58Speaker 3: I feel like Greg's a guy and it's like, oh man,
- 30:01Speaker 3: he was very resistant to all of this stuff that came.
- 30:04Speaker 2: Oh for sure.
- 30:06Speaker 1: I'm my greatest strength in my career is probably my
- 30:10Speaker 1: greatest weakness as a real human, just as a parent,
- 30:13Speaker 1: a person, a friend, all that. I am very singularly
- 30:16Speaker 1: focused on what I deemed the time as being the
- 30:19Speaker 1: most important thing, right, Like you don't keep the main
- 30:22Speaker 1: thing the main thing and all the cliches from our
- 30:24Speaker 1: ball Like that was my entire existence, like vacation was about.
- 30:29Speaker 1: If I didn't get my training and all that stuff done,
- 30:31Speaker 1: there was no vacation. I was no fun. I was
- 30:33Speaker 1: not going to go hang at the pool and throw
- 30:34Speaker 1: the kids up in the air. It was just the
- 30:36Speaker 1: way I was wired. Yeah, So the problem with that.
- 30:40Speaker 1: It was very good to play in the NFL for
- 30:42Speaker 1: a long time because there was never a question of
- 30:44Speaker 1: are you going to be ready?
- 30:45Speaker 2: Well what you meant it?
- 30:46Speaker 4: That was almost like a given.
- 30:48Speaker 2: You stay ready.
- 30:49Speaker 1: I was ready at all times. No whether I ended
- 30:51Speaker 1: up being good enough in the long run, and as
- 30:53Speaker 1: you get older, it was not for the lack of effort.
- 30:56Speaker 4: Yeah, it just the road ends. One day you didn't care.
- 30:59Speaker 3: What anybody else did, and it's like, no, yeah, they
- 31:01Speaker 3: might do this one.
- 31:02Speaker 1: There was nothing in the world when it was time
- 31:04Speaker 1: for me to get what I had to get done done.
- 31:06Speaker 2: There was nothing.
- 31:07Speaker 1: I mean, just take family, my kids, and there was
- 31:10Speaker 1: nothing in the world more important than my training, than my.
- 31:12Speaker 4: Career, than my goals and all that.
- 31:15Speaker 1: Then nothing when I got married and had kids, obviously
- 31:18Speaker 1: some of those goals were challenged. And that's a whole
- 31:20Speaker 1: separate conversation we can have. But as far as like
- 31:25Speaker 1: these rules in the house. I was a big believer
- 31:28Speaker 1: in like you got you know, I expected our ten
- 31:31Speaker 1: year old kids, like what do you want to do,
- 31:33Speaker 1: Like let's get up every day with a purpose of
- 31:35Speaker 1: like what we're going to achieve and how are we
- 31:37Speaker 1: going to get there? And you say you want to
- 31:39Speaker 1: make this team, and you say you want to play
- 31:42Speaker 1: you know whatever it was. And I think back and
- 31:44Speaker 1: I was like, what am I talking about. They're in
- 31:46Speaker 1: fourth grade. They're in fourth grade. I'm looking at it
- 31:50Speaker 1: through the lens of a forty one year old man
- 31:52Speaker 1: who like understands the value of like objectives and goal
- 31:56Speaker 1: orientation and processes and systems and.
- 31:58Speaker 4: Blah blah blah blah blah.
- 32:00Speaker 1: They're in fourth grade. You know what they want to do.
- 32:02Speaker 1: They want to come from home from school. They want
- 32:04Speaker 1: to eat a bag of chips. They want to sit
- 32:05Speaker 1: on their phones, send a couple snaps. They want to
- 32:08Speaker 1: do their homework. If we let them play video games,
- 32:11Speaker 1: they were We don't let them play video games on
- 32:12Speaker 1: the weekdays. And then they'll go to whatever their team
- 32:15Speaker 1: practices that night, will come home, they'll fight us to
- 32:17Speaker 1: go to bed, and we'll get up in the morning,
- 32:19Speaker 1: and we'll do it all over it. That's what every
- 32:22Speaker 1: but you only know what you know. I'm like, well,
- 32:24Speaker 1: what do you mean you don't want to come home
- 32:25Speaker 1: from school and get extra swings? Don't you want to
- 32:28Speaker 1: be good?
- 32:28Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 32:29Speaker 1: Dad, I don't want to be good. Well this is
- 32:30Speaker 1: what he means being good. And my wife's like, they're ten.
- 32:34Speaker 1: I'm like, you're one hundred percent right, So that meant
- 32:38Speaker 1: to I've gotten a little bit better. But like the
- 32:40Speaker 1: way I approached everything has now I'm trying to dial
- 32:45Speaker 1: it back that it's not how I always approach parenting, right, Like,
- 32:48Speaker 1: let them go out and do their thing, even if
- 32:51Speaker 1: it's not what I think they should be doing in
- 32:53Speaker 1: the moment, which is hard for me to bite my tongue.
- 32:55Speaker 1: I gotta let them. I gotta let them go out
- 32:57Speaker 1: there and make the wrong move, train, not do their
- 33:01Speaker 1: homework and time, go out with their friend, like, go
- 33:03Speaker 1: be kids and experience life when the repercussions of the
- 33:06Speaker 1: failure is not really that big of a deal because
- 33:08Speaker 1: you're in seventh grade, now's the time to make all
- 33:11Speaker 1: those mistakes. Now's all those times to have trial and error.
- 33:15Speaker 1: In the beginning of parenting, and even at times now.
- 33:18Speaker 1: The best way I'd probably sum it up is in
- 33:20Speaker 1: my mind, I was like, if you just listen to me,
- 33:22Speaker 1: I can probably prevent all the error, right like I
- 33:25Speaker 1: could probably prevent you from making all the mistakes. As
- 33:28Speaker 1: I've parented more, the lessons are better when they experience
- 33:33Speaker 1: it for themselves versus anything that we tell them. We
- 33:37Speaker 1: could tell them something's bad for them or good for them,
- 33:39Speaker 1: until they experience it for themselves in a good or
- 33:42Speaker 1: a bad experience, it's not reinforced as strongly. So as
- 33:46Speaker 1: much as I want to give them all this wisdom
- 33:48Speaker 1: about what path to take and how to do it,
- 33:50Speaker 1: and this is what it looks like and if you
- 33:51Speaker 1: put in these this day every day, you'll achieve your goals,
- 33:54Speaker 1: but it's not real Like that's not a realistic way
- 33:58Speaker 1: to parent. And as hard as that is for me,
- 34:01Speaker 1: that's probably the area I'm trying to improve on the best.
- 34:05Speaker 2: Does that make sense? So that's it? Is that a
- 34:07Speaker 2: right now thing too?
- 34:08Speaker 4: Like this radiation it's every day in real time?
- 34:12Speaker 2: Yeah? Yeah? Yeah?
- 34:13Speaker 5: Did you come to this realization though, that it's okay
- 34:16Speaker 5: to kind of let them live and learn the experience
- 34:19Speaker 5: within Like the last four or five years.
- 34:22Speaker 2: As they've gotten older. Ten's the mark. Yeah it's ten again.
- 34:25Speaker 4: I probably use ten. I probably can't.
- 34:28Speaker 2: Yeah, I guess they are.
- 34:29Speaker 4: I guess ten. I keep saying ten.
- 34:31Speaker 2: I don't.
- 34:31Speaker 1: I don't know what is it about ten. Maybe it's
- 34:33Speaker 1: double digits, or maybe it's that they're, you know, they're
- 34:35Speaker 1: almost on the brink of middle school ish, Like what
- 34:37Speaker 1: is that, like fifth or sixth grade? Yeah, maybe four.
- 34:42Speaker 1: I don't even know anymore, but like, maybe it's that,
- 34:44Speaker 1: but it probably is.
- 34:46Speaker 4: An arbitrary number. But all in all, I think.
- 34:50Speaker 1: The biggest realization and failures or whatever you want to
- 34:53Speaker 1: classify it as that I've personally had as a parent.
- 34:55Speaker 1: The simplest way to put it is, as much as
- 34:58Speaker 1: you think your advice is really good and sound and
- 35:00Speaker 1: comes from a place of experience and success and failure
- 35:04Speaker 1: and all those things, it makes sense in my brain
- 35:06Speaker 1: to be like, I'll just tell you what you need
- 35:09Speaker 1: to do, you do it, and you will have great success.
- 35:12Speaker 1: Like that to me is like one plus one equals too.
- 35:15Speaker 1: Why would you not take the advice? And when you
- 35:18Speaker 1: look back on it, I'm like, because that's not the
- 35:21Speaker 1: real world. Everyone everyone achieves what they achieve and goes
- 35:25Speaker 1: through their own journey most of the time, through their
- 35:28Speaker 1: own experiences, and we can guide them, we can shape them,
- 35:31Speaker 1: we can help kind of steer the path to give
- 35:33Speaker 1: them some guardrails. But like until they have that big
- 35:36Speaker 1: failure or that big disappointment or that big success, what
- 35:40Speaker 1: dad says, what mom says is not as it's not
- 35:43Speaker 1: nearly as impactful as that experience. And when you watch
- 35:49Speaker 1: your kids have failure, it's like I'm the king of like, well,
- 35:52Speaker 1: if he just did what I said, you probably wouldn't.
- 35:55Speaker 1: I'm probably I'm better at that. I'm a little better
- 35:58Speaker 1: at that. Now I'm still not where I they need
- 36:00Speaker 1: to be. But that's a huge conflict for me. Yeah,
- 36:06Speaker 1: I think that just being honest.
- 36:07Speaker 3: Yeah, even though you see it as like you know,
- 36:10Speaker 3: I'm a little bit better, I'm not where I want
- 36:11Speaker 3: to be. To me, it's still it still works out
- 36:15Speaker 3: because then your boys and your daughter, they grew up
- 36:19Speaker 3: like us when our parents were hard on us, Like
- 36:21Speaker 3: my dad was more tough love. I'm sure your dad
- 36:23Speaker 3: was a ball coach. He was probably the same with you,
- 36:25Speaker 3: like you end up appreciating it later in life because
- 36:28Speaker 3: you realize how rigid they were in some areas, no doubt,
- 36:30Speaker 3: even though our dad's probably wished they were a little
- 36:32Speaker 3: like my dad's, Like I wish I would have listened a.
- 36:34Speaker 2: Little bit more too. We're behindsight, we're empathetic.
- 36:37Speaker 1: The ability to reflect on things in hindsight, yeah is
- 36:40Speaker 1: so powerful, right, Yeah, And what we all know now
- 36:43Speaker 1: and my appreciation for my parents, or my appreciation for
- 36:46Speaker 1: how hard my dad was as our high school coach
- 36:48Speaker 1: and what he put us through, Like at the time,
- 36:50Speaker 1: did I love it? When I was sixteen and I
- 36:53Speaker 1: had to be home at nine o'clock because such and such.
- 36:56Speaker 2: And you wanted to eat.
- 36:57Speaker 1: I wanted to eat, and I wanted to be out
- 36:58Speaker 1: with my friends at the carnival or you know, whatever
- 37:00Speaker 1: we were doing, And like, I look back on it now
- 37:02Speaker 1: and I'm like, if I didn't learn those lessons early
- 37:05Speaker 1: in my life, And there were probably times where I
- 37:07Speaker 1: went up to my room pissed off and this isn't
- 37:09Speaker 1: fair and the other kids get to do this, And
- 37:11Speaker 1: but now I look.
- 37:12Speaker 4: Back and I'm like, my life's pretty good.
- 37:15Speaker 1: I could do whatever the hell I want now And
- 37:17Speaker 1: was it worth at sixteen making a couple of sacrifices,
- 37:20Speaker 1: not going on spring break with your buddies as a
- 37:21Speaker 1: senior because you had to stay home for track.
- 37:24Speaker 4: Me and I can go. I can go back to
- 37:26Speaker 4: Aruba anytime I want.
- 37:28Speaker 1: Yeah, now you don't go with your high school boys,
- 37:30Speaker 1: which is a different animal. But that perspective is only
- 37:34Speaker 1: earned through experience.
- 37:36Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 37:36Speaker 3: Yeah, and Suram, I feel like I completely hijacked your
- 37:39Speaker 3: question about the the tech and social media coming in
- 37:43Speaker 3: because I am all of the understanding all of that.
- 37:46Speaker 3: I would love to know, like when did the conversation
- 37:49Speaker 3: Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, first start as Shuran was asking
- 37:52Speaker 3: when those started coming to the household.
- 37:54Speaker 1: I think our kids got a cell phone, not like
- 37:57Speaker 1: loaded up with everything. So the way we did it,
- 38:00Speaker 1: and when I say we, like my wife drove the
- 38:01Speaker 1: ship on all of this.
- 38:04Speaker 2: Let's go. You wanted to have a flip phone?
- 38:06Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I'll go back.
- 38:11Speaker 4: To a razor.
- 38:12Speaker 1: Was there anything cooler than when you got your first
- 38:14Speaker 1: razor slipped in that front pocket and it was this
- 38:17Speaker 1: thing You're like, wait, texting.
- 38:21Speaker 2: I need another flip because that was clean.
- 38:25Speaker 1: I mean, so I think our kids got stuff. I
- 38:28Speaker 1: will say I don't think there was like a one
- 38:30Speaker 1: size fits all. I don't have the exact dates, but
- 38:32Speaker 1: I do think our two boys and daughter, I think
- 38:35Speaker 1: they did get things at like relatively different times, all
- 38:38Speaker 1: within the same span.
- 38:39Speaker 4: I would say fifth sixth.
- 38:41Speaker 1: Grade was probably the window of when things started to
- 38:46Speaker 1: be introduced. When they were younger, they each had like
- 38:48Speaker 1: an iPad, but that had to be at the house
- 38:51Speaker 1: so they could they could like message friends or go
- 38:55Speaker 1: on YouTube and watch videos and stuff. But it was
- 38:57Speaker 1: like a home iPad that stayed at the house and
- 39:00Speaker 1: they actually walked out of the house with a phone
- 39:02Speaker 1: in their pocket. It was probably fifth or sixth grade,
- 39:05Speaker 1: but we were very particular about what was allowed on it,
- 39:08Speaker 1: Like I think they couldn't get like they've got certain access,
- 39:12Speaker 1: like they were allowed to have Instagram kids or whatever
- 39:15Speaker 1: they have. They weren't allowed to post, and they could
- 39:18Speaker 1: only follow people that we knew, Like that was our
- 39:21Speaker 1: rule in the house, Like you can only follow people
- 39:24Speaker 1: that mom and.
- 39:25Speaker 4: Dad know, not people that you know. People that we know.
- 39:28Speaker 1: So our friends, our friends' kids, your friends at school,
- 39:31Speaker 1: kids on the team, So that was like our guardrails early.
- 39:34Speaker 1: I can't imagine that that rule is still being followed
- 39:36Speaker 1: by I can only imagine who my two boys follow
- 39:38Speaker 1: on social media.
- 39:40Speaker 2: Not that bad of a rule, though, when you think
- 39:41Speaker 2: about it.
- 39:42Speaker 4: Everybody at the time.
- 39:45Speaker 3: Personally, I'm legit, We're legitimately listening. Like I'm thinking, Okay,
- 39:50Speaker 3: this is going.
- 39:50Speaker 2: To be the game.
- 39:51Speaker 1: The one they all wanted that we held out the
- 39:54Speaker 1: best on. They all have it now, But we held
- 39:57Speaker 1: out pretty well on was Snapchat.
- 40:00Speaker 4: I don't love it.
- 40:01Speaker 1: Nothing against the app itself, Snapchat and TikTok. The algorithms
- 40:07Speaker 1: there are pretty are pretty interesting, and like, the more
- 40:09Speaker 1: you learn about it, and now.
- 40:12Speaker 2: Are you doing this research yourself, like with your wife?
- 40:16Speaker 1: Yeah, I again, I'm first to admit, like wife driving
- 40:20Speaker 1: a lot of these decisions, and I look back and
- 40:22Speaker 1: I'm like, really, good decision.
- 40:24Speaker 2: You nailed that.
- 40:25Speaker 1: I'm so glad I get to take half credit. But
- 40:28Speaker 1: you nailed that whole timing. He was ready, she wasn't,
- 40:31Speaker 1: whatever the case may be. And you have a great
- 40:34Speaker 1: feel for what the kids can handle and can't handle.
- 40:38Speaker 1: That one gets a little challenging, right because it's the
- 40:40Speaker 1: only way they communicate with their friends is like snapping
- 40:43Speaker 1: each other and messaging through these apps.
- 40:46Speaker 4: They don't text.
- 40:47Speaker 1: They don't call, they don't FaceTime their friends, they don't
- 40:50Speaker 1: face and text us. Everything's through these apps, so they
- 40:54Speaker 1: snap you.
- 40:55Speaker 2: I do not have.
- 40:56Speaker 1: I refuse to snap with my children. That's where I
- 40:59Speaker 1: draw the line. I think my wife has snap. I
- 41:00Speaker 1: don't know if the kids actually snap her. I make
- 41:02Speaker 1: them text me, and if they don't respond to my text,
- 41:05Speaker 1: I'm like, we have two options. I can take your
- 41:07Speaker 1: phone away, but you have your phone in your hand
- 41:09Speaker 1: the entire day. It's amazing that when I text you,
- 41:12Speaker 1: you don't respond. So I have no patience for that.
- 41:16Speaker 1: So I address that pretty clearly. But now I refuse
- 41:19Speaker 1: to snap with my I know a lot of parents do.
- 41:21Speaker 1: I'm not judging. I'm just speaking from my own perspective.
- 41:24Speaker 1: I refuse to snap pictures with my children.
- 41:27Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah, you know, you know Greg's giving them
- 41:29Speaker 3: the You know, when I was young, we had to
- 41:31Speaker 3: be at the friend's house and call from that landlord.
- 41:34Speaker 2: Yeah we did.
- 41:34Speaker 3: Let you know we were safe. And you can't just
- 41:36Speaker 3: text me back when you got your phone, when you
- 41:37Speaker 3: had your.
- 41:38Speaker 1: First girlfriend, you called the house line and when mister
- 41:40Speaker 1: Compton answered.
- 41:42Speaker 2: Oh mister Compton, this is great. Is Caro home? She's
- 41:48Speaker 2: not home. You want us to call her?
- 41:49Speaker 1: Right?
- 41:49Speaker 2: No, No, she does have to call me back. So
- 41:51Speaker 2: like that ship you learn if you talk.
- 41:53Speaker 4: About being a man.
- 41:54Speaker 2: Yeah, no, truly call your.
- 41:56Speaker 1: Middle school or high school girlfriend's landline. Yeah, to mom
- 42:00Speaker 1: and dad and have and just pray mom answers. Pray
- 42:04Speaker 1: mom answers, because if dad answers, immediate panic attack.
- 42:09Speaker 2: Yeah, I like that. Could I would.
- 42:11Speaker 1: Love that a boy right now that'd be interested in
- 42:14Speaker 1: dating my daughter would have to call Like imagine if
- 42:15Speaker 1: they had to call my cell phone, like a middle
- 42:18Speaker 1: school boy called my cell phone to talk to k Talbot.
- 42:21Speaker 2: That'd be sick amazing. Is there.
- 42:25Speaker 3: Prep that is in place for you mentally or something
- 42:30Speaker 3: that steps that are going to have to happen when
- 42:32Speaker 3: that first boy does want to take your daughter on
- 42:34Speaker 3: a date.
- 42:34Speaker 1: Okay, So it goes back to your earlier question, Like
- 42:36Speaker 1: things that I thought of years ago that I'm different
- 42:39Speaker 1: on now. I was that like tough guy dad. I
- 42:41Speaker 1: probably was just saying it just to be that dad
- 42:43Speaker 1: when the kids were little. But I was like, my
- 42:45Speaker 1: daughter's never gonna.
- 42:46Speaker 2: Have a boyfriend. I might kill him, yeah.
- 42:48Speaker 1: Right, Like I always think of like I always think
- 42:50Speaker 1: of that Will Smith, Martin Lawrence and back when he comes.
- 42:53Speaker 1: Like I think every dad that dream. I think every
- 42:57Speaker 1: day I think dad had. Every dad has that dream,
- 43:01Speaker 1: like they would love to meet their daughter's boyfriend at
- 43:04Speaker 1: the door and be able to just go at him
- 43:05Speaker 1: like that. But I but when they were little, like
- 43:08Speaker 1: it's your little girl, Oh, your daddy's your only boyfriend, Daddy, Dad.
- 43:12Speaker 1: The way I look at it now is very different,
- 43:14Speaker 1: And my thought is she's going to date someone. Most
- 43:19Speaker 1: likely inevitably she's going to date someone. Same thing with
- 43:21Speaker 1: the boys. You could either make it that she goes
- 43:25Speaker 1: and dates these boys around your back or in hiding
- 43:30Speaker 1: or sneaky and sneaking out and going to a friend's house,
- 43:33Speaker 1: but then meeting up with the boy because you don't
- 43:35Speaker 1: allow him over and make her uncomfortable around boys, and
- 43:38Speaker 1: you make her feel insecure. At some point she's gonna
- 43:42Speaker 1: want to have a boyfriend and at one point she's
- 43:44Speaker 1: going to go on a date Like that is the
- 43:45Speaker 1: real world for all of us dads, Like, no matter
- 43:47Speaker 1: how well we want to talk tough, I would much
- 43:50Speaker 1: rather that boy feel like he can come to my
- 43:52Speaker 1: house and ring my doorbell, shake my hand, and take
- 43:56Speaker 1: her out to dinner with no fear, with no intimidation.
- 43:59Speaker 1: I can't believe I got to go to Greg's, Like,
- 44:01Speaker 1: I don't want that to be the experience for her.
- 44:04Speaker 1: I don't want that to be the experience for the boy. Now,
- 44:06Speaker 1: we're gonna have high standards, we're gonna have rules, we're
- 44:08Speaker 1: gonna have shit that.
- 44:09Speaker 4: Needs to be abided by.
- 44:10Speaker 1: But I don't want the relationship to have to be
- 44:13Speaker 1: in fear, in awkwardness, because then she could either end
- 44:18Speaker 1: up with guys that I would never want around my
- 44:20Speaker 1: house anyway because they're not people that hang out with
- 44:22Speaker 1: my boys, or they're not people that So she's going
- 44:24Speaker 1: to date someone. So if it's a family friend, if
- 44:27Speaker 1: it's your brother's friend, okay, I'd rather that than like
- 44:31Speaker 1: some guy we don't know.
- 44:32Speaker 2: Yeh.
- 44:33Speaker 1: So I've come around pretty good on that we have.
- 44:37Speaker 1: She has not really had like a boyfriend yet, but
- 44:39Speaker 1: the day is coming. And as long as she treats
- 44:42Speaker 1: herself right and as long as she has a lot
- 44:44Speaker 1: of self respect and he treats her with a ton
- 44:47Speaker 1: of respect and treats her right, like, I'll be happy
- 44:50Speaker 1: that day when she gets picked up to go out
- 44:52Speaker 1: on a date with a boy, but like if we
- 44:53Speaker 1: say you got to be home at whatever time she
- 44:55Speaker 1: needs me in the door?
- 44:56Speaker 2: Yeah, is there a world Greg where you a guy
- 44:59Speaker 2: might date your order to hang out with you? Like
- 45:01Speaker 2: I genuinely have that thought. Is there a world where you.
- 45:04Speaker 1: Know that's an interesting question? Is you know it's it's
- 45:11Speaker 1: an interesting question. I guess anything's possible. The vast majority
- 45:16Speaker 1: of the boys that like we circle with, because I
- 45:19Speaker 1: have two boys that are relatively the same age, I've
- 45:22Speaker 1: coached most of these boys since they were five years
- 45:24Speaker 1: old in.
- 45:25Speaker 4: Some team, our general group of.
- 45:28Speaker 1: Boys, especially at our school, but even some kids in
- 45:30Speaker 1: town that don't go to our school that we just
- 45:32Speaker 1: know through the teams and stuff over the years. Unless
- 45:35Speaker 1: she just goes completely outside of that pool, I guess maybe.
- 45:39Speaker 1: But I do think for a lot of these boys
- 45:42Speaker 1: that have known me as coach and have known me
- 45:44Speaker 1: as Tatan TJ's dad for years and we've been through
- 45:47Speaker 1: football practices and long days and heat and workouts, and
- 45:51Speaker 1: they know me a little bit more on that side.
- 45:53Speaker 1: With the boys, I do think whatever boy is like
- 45:56Speaker 1: I'm interested in dating Talbot, like he's gonna have to
- 46:00Speaker 1: like her because I think to like come over and
- 46:03Speaker 1: like experience a different side of our house and a
- 46:05Speaker 1: different side have dinner with us at the kitchen table. Like,
- 46:09Speaker 1: I'm going to give that kid a lot of credit
- 46:11Speaker 1: because that's going to be an unless it's some stranger boy,
- 46:14Speaker 1: which hopefully it's not. One of these boys is going
- 46:17Speaker 1: to have a long standing relationship with our family, with
- 46:19Speaker 1: our sons, and it's going to be a little different
- 46:23Speaker 1: sitting with your two buddies at the kitchen table and
- 46:24Speaker 1: your former pop porner football coach at the head of
- 46:27Speaker 1: the table eating mashed potatoes. You know, yeah, it's Is.
- 46:32Speaker 3: There a conversation you envision having with the first one
- 46:35Speaker 3: who wants to date your daughter? Because as I'm listening
- 46:37Speaker 3: to you, I feel like you're when you say I'm
- 46:39Speaker 3: coming around, I feel like you're giving a lot.
- 46:42Speaker 2: Of respect to the situation.
- 46:45Speaker 3: And I would almost assume that at some point, whether
- 46:49Speaker 3: they try and push a boundary or whatever, you're going
- 46:52Speaker 3: to want that respect to be reciprocated because you are
- 46:54Speaker 3: trying to, you know, do as well as you can.
- 46:57Speaker 3: Is there like not like a tone center, but is
- 46:59Speaker 3: there conversation you envision when that first boy come or
- 47:02Speaker 3: the first one that feels like, hey, this this, this
- 47:05Speaker 3: could be serious, This could lead to something serious.
- 47:07Speaker 2: Yeah maybe the high school.
- 47:08Speaker 1: Yeah, like come high school, right, so come high school
- 47:10Speaker 1: and things are a little bit more serious, especially nowadays,
- 47:12Speaker 1: Like some of these high school relationships, like some of
- 47:14Speaker 1: our older friends, like kids are friends with older kids
- 47:17Speaker 1: have like some of these relationships in high school nowadays
- 47:20Speaker 1: are very serious, like much more serious than like what
- 47:22Speaker 1: a high school boyfriend girlfriend situation was like when we
- 47:25Speaker 1: were growing up. They go on trips together, they travel together,
- 47:28Speaker 1: they're at each other's houses, like on weekday nights, like
- 47:31Speaker 1: the thought of when I was in high school, like
- 47:33Speaker 1: having your girlfriend over on a Wednesday, Like, no, you
- 47:36Speaker 1: saw your friends and your girlfriend boyfriends on the weekends.
- 47:39Speaker 1: After the football game on Friday night, you go out
- 47:41Speaker 1: to dinner, right, like where we ja?
- 47:43Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 47:44Speaker 1: Where hopefully you set a couple of tuddies. But like
- 47:50Speaker 1: so that again, just with time, things evolve. I guess
- 47:55Speaker 1: the simplest way I would try to answer it, And
- 47:57Speaker 1: again I'm anticipating what I'm gonna do.
- 47:59Speaker 2: I have not had to do any of this stuff yet.
- 48:02Speaker 1: Hopefully we've done a nice job with our sons and
- 48:06Speaker 1: daughters that like the person they choose to enter into
- 48:09Speaker 1: a relationship with, they already apply their own high standards, right,
- 48:13Speaker 1: like someone who treats them good. Hopefully we taught them
- 48:16Speaker 1: like what that looks like? What does a relationship look like?
- 48:18Speaker 1: What does it mean to look after someone else more
- 48:21Speaker 1: than you look after your own self interest? Like can
- 48:23Speaker 1: we start introducing those early like selfless principles that then
- 48:27Speaker 1: they can apply to someone who also shares those said principles.
- 48:31Speaker 1: Hopefully they drive those high standards and we don't have
- 48:35Speaker 1: to be like the big tone setter. I feel like
- 48:38Speaker 1: if I have to like set the tone of like
- 48:40Speaker 1: how this boy is going to treat my daughter and
- 48:42Speaker 1: it's got to come out of fear of me, that's probably.
- 48:46Speaker 4: Not the best situation.
- 48:47Speaker 1: Like, hopefully this guy wants to treat my daughter right, Yeah,
- 48:50Speaker 1: because she demands it right, Like she's earned that and
- 48:54Speaker 1: the way she carries herself and the way she treats
- 48:58Speaker 1: him and the way she treats herself in the way
- 49:00Speaker 1: she sets her boundaries and sets her expectations.
- 49:03Speaker 4: Hopefully the guy meets.
- 49:04Speaker 1: Her standards and it's not like, oh man, I'm only
- 49:07Speaker 1: gonna be nice to her because it's Greg's daughter. I
- 49:09Speaker 1: don't want any of that to ever be the case.
- 49:12Speaker 1: But we got to teach our kids, like what do
- 49:13Speaker 1: those relationships look like? And yeah, we can try to
- 49:16Speaker 1: do it, you know through your your own relationships in
- 49:18Speaker 1: your house, which are you know, challenging and have ups
- 49:21Speaker 1: and downs and all that. But hopefully it starts with
- 49:24Speaker 1: them and then obviously if there's things that need to
- 49:26Speaker 1: be addressed and things expectations that need to be put
- 49:29Speaker 1: on top of that, like that's whereas parents we get involved.
- 49:33Speaker 3: But yeah, I mean there's gonna be a time where
- 49:34Speaker 3: it's like she's going to be getting in the car
- 49:37Speaker 3: with somebody else to go on their first date. And
- 49:39Speaker 3: she's gonna be in somebody else's not like a buddy's vehicle,
- 49:43Speaker 3: parents vehicle.
- 49:44Speaker 2: It's gonna be a sixteen year old boy.
- 49:46Speaker 3: Yeah, and he could be he's gonna he's probably gonna
- 49:48Speaker 3: be awesome.
- 49:49Speaker 2: But I'm your old boy. You're getting in the car now,
- 49:52Speaker 2: like my daughter's get in the car.
- 49:54Speaker 1: Well, I'm gonna definitely have a little powering message.
- 49:56Speaker 4: It's like good decisions here.
- 50:00Speaker 1: There's no more prize possession in the world than that
- 50:02Speaker 1: little lady in the front seat, Like phone rings down,
- 50:06Speaker 1: like she's home at a certain time, Like let's keep
- 50:09Speaker 1: our shit together. Like but there's such an element of
- 50:13Speaker 1: like willing parenting. Fuck I don't, I don't. I'm sitting
- 50:19Speaker 1: here like I have all these answers because I don't know.
- 50:21Speaker 2: I know, I can't wait when you call.
- 50:23Speaker 4: Yeah, Like I guess we're on that go and I'm
- 50:26Speaker 4: like everything like.
- 50:27Speaker 1: Most times, I'm probably gonna be like everything I thought
- 50:29Speaker 1: it was going to be, it was the complete opposite,
- 50:32Speaker 1: you know, like everything that I envisioned in my brain.
- 50:35Speaker 1: Disregard everything I said because it's all wrong. Yeah, you know,
- 50:39Speaker 1: I think there is an element to parenting where sometimes.
- 50:41Speaker 2: You just have to step back.
- 50:43Speaker 1: And say we trust you, like we trust you to
- 50:46Speaker 1: make good decisions, and until you burn that trust, will
- 50:49Speaker 1: reconsider what we're allowed and not allowed to do. But
- 50:52Speaker 1: like she's they're gonna get in the car with teenagers. Yeah, yeah,
- 50:55Speaker 1: they're gonna get in the car with boys. They're gonna
- 50:57Speaker 1: get in the car with girls. They're gonna go to
- 50:59Speaker 1: parties there gonna like they're gonna do it. You hope
- 51:04Speaker 1: to God that you've taught them some ability to make
- 51:07Speaker 1: good decisions. And yeah, sixteen year old decisions look a
- 51:10Speaker 1: lot different than forty year old decisions. And we were
- 51:12Speaker 1: all in those places at one time too. And it's
- 51:15Speaker 1: very hard for me to sit here and say that
- 51:17Speaker 1: because I want to control every situation.
- 51:19Speaker 4: It's just my personality.
- 51:21Speaker 1: But the reality is I'm not going to follow them
- 51:23Speaker 1: to high school parties and I'm not going to sit
- 51:25Speaker 1: in the back seat when she goes on a date.
- 51:26Speaker 3: And We've had a couple of dad hacks come in
- 51:29Speaker 3: and now I think this one's a good one.
- 51:30Speaker 2: When when they come home from the date to you're
- 51:33Speaker 2: just outside doing yard work while they pull in the driveway.
- 51:36Speaker 1: It might be a night throwing off the driveway, Yeah,
- 51:40Speaker 1: because they know you're home right.
- 51:41Speaker 4: When you come off track.
- 51:42Speaker 3: And something about when you come home with your girlfriend
- 51:44Speaker 3: you're sitting in the driveway. You don't want to any
- 51:46Speaker 3: hanky piky going on. Dad's outside the yard doing yard work.
- 51:49Speaker 2: That's a great move. I got to go in to appropriate.
- 51:53Speaker 2: It's not menacing like a shotgun on the porch. You're
- 51:56Speaker 2: just doing a little guard.
- 51:57Speaker 1: Yeah, I didn't even know what time you guys were
- 51:58Speaker 1: coming home. I'm busy being a dad all day, I
- 52:01Speaker 1: haven't had time.
- 52:02Speaker 4: To blow the leaves.
- 52:03Speaker 2: Yeah, you're like dad, you never moved the yard.
- 52:05Speaker 1: Power washing the front steps at ten thirty on a Saturday.
- 52:09Speaker 2: Yeah, they're filthy.
- 52:10Speaker 4: Have you seen the mildew?
- 52:12Speaker 1: Have you seen the moss your mother lets grow between
- 52:15Speaker 1: the cracks. It's embarrassing. Can't have your boyfriend drop you
- 52:18Speaker 1: off with weeds in the cement.
- 52:21Speaker 2: That would one hundred percent work on me.
- 52:23Speaker 5: By the way, just thinking of myself as a teenager
- 52:25Speaker 5: and rolling up, I would probably even have more respect
- 52:28Speaker 5: for the dead and be like, dude, he's always on it,
- 52:30Speaker 5: like he's just.
- 52:31Speaker 2: This guy's a dog. Yeah, hopefully it's creative and hopefully
- 52:34Speaker 2: you're like I just got to tip my cap to him,
- 52:36Speaker 2: like he's on it.
- 52:37Speaker 4: Hopefully at this time, like you got some peptides and
- 52:39Speaker 4: some tea.
- 52:40Speaker 1: You're looking Jackson everywhere and you're wearing like a sleeveless Hey.
- 52:44Speaker 1: I'll tell you one thing though, that I will never
- 52:47Speaker 1: I will never go back off this rule. There's no
- 52:52Speaker 1: like X opposite sexes.
- 52:55Speaker 2: In bedrooms now.
- 52:58Speaker 1: I also don't want them in the base so basement
- 53:01Speaker 1: for me bad news.
- 53:03Speaker 2: Everyone knows all the games as a guy.
- 53:06Speaker 1: We all know what that looks like. So like I
- 53:08Speaker 1: got to figure out in my head. Okay, high school boyfriend,
- 53:11Speaker 1: high school girlfriends, whatever comes over the house for the boys,
- 53:14Speaker 1: Like I know they don't want to sit on the
- 53:16Speaker 1: couch and watch TV with us.
- 53:19Speaker 2: But you break it down, it's like, well you go
- 53:20Speaker 2: where you're going?
- 53:21Speaker 1: Got a basement and you got a bedroom. We sure
- 53:24Speaker 1: as hell an going in the bedrooms? Do we let
- 53:27Speaker 1: them go in the basement? Like I almost feel like
- 53:29Speaker 1: if you had like a TV room like on the
- 53:31Speaker 1: first floor, that doesn't feel as bad as the basement
- 53:34Speaker 1: has a bad connotation?
- 53:35Speaker 4: Am I wrong?
- 53:37Speaker 2: No?
- 53:37Speaker 1: You're you're right? So where do they go? I haven't
- 53:40Speaker 1: figured this one out. If you want them at your house,
- 53:43Speaker 1: where do they go that they can like be teenagers
- 53:46Speaker 1: and they can hang and watch a movie and whatever.
- 53:48Speaker 1: But like you're not sitting in your bedroom. That's not
- 53:51Speaker 1: that isn't non negotiable. Where do they go?
- 53:55Speaker 2: Is your is your basement?
- 53:59Speaker 4: It's above ground? Does that count?
- 54:02Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 54:03Speaker 4: Does that make it a little bit?
- 54:04Speaker 2: That makes it better? Is there a TV like on
- 54:06Speaker 2: a back porch somewhere?
- 54:07Speaker 4: There is?
- 54:08Speaker 2: That's always like, no doubt. I feel like we've all
- 54:13Speaker 2: been young men. Even when you're going in your girlfriend's.
- 54:16Speaker 3: House and they got you know, if that doesn't allow
- 54:19Speaker 3: them to go into the bedroom, You're like, okay, you
- 54:21Speaker 3: check the box. We're not gonna be allowed to go
- 54:22Speaker 3: in the bedroom. How do you figure this out as
- 54:24Speaker 3: a young male? Like this is what goes through on market?
- 54:27Speaker 3: So like and then when you if you go down
- 54:28Speaker 3: the basement, if it's a if it's a narrow hallway
- 54:31Speaker 3: going down, or where you got to turn left to
- 54:32Speaker 3: get to the TV room, you're thinking there's enough time
- 54:35Speaker 3: to where you could hear something coming down, Like this
- 54:38Speaker 3: is instinctively how the male brain operates.
- 54:41Speaker 1: Oh, I'm well aware, and now apply all those thoughts
- 54:43Speaker 1: to your daughter. And you wonder why I want to
- 54:46Speaker 1: like locker in the basic Yeah, I take back every
- 54:49Speaker 1: single thing I've said.
- 54:50Speaker 2: For the last forty minutes.
- 54:51Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, yeah, but this is like real shit that
- 54:53Speaker 1: I think about, like where.
- 54:56Speaker 2: I don't have only you know, I haven't been to
- 54:58Speaker 2: your basement. I don't know, Like it's fair we open
- 55:00Speaker 2: the next time I fly to Charlotte, I'll go.
- 55:02Speaker 4: When you've come, we can do a walk, we can
- 55:04Speaker 4: do like a security chance, sit on the.
- 55:06Speaker 2: Couch, all come down, let me know how loud I
- 55:08Speaker 2: want to stop. Stop?
- 55:10Speaker 1: How from when you first heard my footstep? How much
- 55:14Speaker 1: time you saw my body? Yes, and we're timing it.
- 55:17Speaker 1: I'm writing it in a journal and then we're like
- 55:19Speaker 1: marking different. All right, you guys can sit in this couch.
- 55:22Speaker 1: This room's too far removed. That's an ex.
- 55:25Speaker 5: Greg needs to be the one walking down the stairs
- 55:27Speaker 5: and we need to be cuddled on the couch and
- 55:29Speaker 5: the same blank.
- 55:30Speaker 2: Can we repeat that? Yeah, see if you can kind
- 55:32Speaker 2: of get readjusted.
- 55:35Speaker 1: Why you had the blanket, your your your completely red
- 55:39Speaker 1: face even making out for an hour?
- 55:41Speaker 2: Yeah, Greg, Greg's like, why are you guys doing this? This
- 55:43Speaker 2: is my daughter?
- 55:43Speaker 3: Like, Greg, We've got to give you real, real example,
- 55:46Speaker 3: that's real.
- 55:47Speaker 2: This is how we were.
- 55:48Speaker 5: Bro.
- 55:48Speaker 1: I think that's a that might there might be a
- 55:51Speaker 1: business there, Like do you guys go around.
- 55:54Speaker 4: Houses and scope out that's not a bad idea.
- 55:57Speaker 1: You know people checks, Yeah, they check like your windows
- 56:01Speaker 1: and your shrubs, and you don't want to cover certain
- 56:03Speaker 1: areas of egress. And like there could be like a
- 56:06Speaker 1: company that goes around and gives you like a report
- 56:09Speaker 1: on your household for teenage kids, Like, all right, in
- 56:12Speaker 1: our opinion, we might be onto something here. Yeah, these
- 56:15Speaker 1: are the rooms that you can safely allow access. These
- 56:18Speaker 1: are the rooms that you should not allow access.
- 56:20Speaker 2: Greg, These are your danger zones right here. These are
- 56:22Speaker 2: your corners that you need to watch. You're not a
- 56:24Speaker 2: bad idea. You think dating, So do you think sports?
- 56:28Speaker 2: We just put dating on the end. Yeah, yeah, I
- 56:30Speaker 2: feel like we're onto something. There's something there, But.
- 56:32Speaker 1: I think about that a lot, like there is and
- 56:35Speaker 1: then you've got to apply the same logic to like
- 56:37Speaker 1: who they're dating, Like do they.
- 56:39Speaker 4: Have any rules?
- 56:41Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 56:41Speaker 1: They allowed anywhere? Do I if they are allowed anywhere?
- 56:45Speaker 1: Do I like get involved? Do you get it's like,
- 56:47Speaker 1: what are the rules there? Like I don't want to
- 56:49Speaker 1: tell another man how to run his house, but like
- 56:51Speaker 1: you got my daughter at your house home?
- 56:53Speaker 2: Bok, Yeah, I do feel like I don't know what?
- 56:54Speaker 3: Do you dot to be some type of relationship that
- 56:57Speaker 3: has to be formed so you guys can be aligned
- 56:58Speaker 3: in on the same page.
- 57:00Speaker 2: You know the game, Like can you take them golfing? Golf?
- 57:05Speaker 2: You got good crew? You take him out to you
- 57:07Speaker 2: take him out to golf it's you, it's keik Lee,
- 57:09Speaker 2: it's Swan.
- 57:14Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 57:14Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, but like that ship's real.
- 57:19Speaker 5: Yeah, man, and Greg, just just because we are trying
- 57:23Speaker 5: to hit a good time for you.
- 57:24Speaker 2: We get lost in the sa We could get lost
- 57:26Speaker 2: in the sauce. Oh you're good.
- 57:28Speaker 4: We've got a couple more minutes.
- 57:29Speaker 2: Okay, cool? What things do we need to hit? One?
- 57:33Speaker 2: Do you want to ask a question that somebody had
- 57:34Speaker 2: for Greg? Yes?
- 57:35Speaker 5: I thought it'd be fun if we hit the questions
- 57:38Speaker 5: for Greg. We reach out to some of our listeners.
- 57:42Speaker 5: They got some nice, easy, fun questions for you.
- 57:45Speaker 3: Okay, here we go. This one is from b Bat
- 57:47Speaker 3: one oh four on Discord. As a sports dad, what's
- 57:50Speaker 3: the top three items Greg has in his survival kid
- 57:54Speaker 3: Whether it's on game day, for practice, training, or raising
- 57:57Speaker 3: athletes at home, these are necessities.
- 58:01Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 58:01Speaker 1: Number one is my is my shoe choice. I'll spend
- 58:07Speaker 1: countless hours a day on my feet most of the
- 58:09Speaker 1: time in the heat of North Carolina. A lot of
- 58:11Speaker 1: our stuffs in the summer and it's pretty warm all
- 58:13Speaker 1: year round, So my shoe.
- 58:15Speaker 4: Choice every day is critical.
- 58:17Speaker 2: My my.
- 58:20Speaker 1: If I can't be on my feet all day and
- 58:22Speaker 1: on my feet my feet ended my career, so I'm
- 58:24Speaker 1: very sensitive to what I put on my feet. So
- 58:28Speaker 1: number one is shoe choice, and I have three pairs
- 58:32Speaker 1: of shoes.
- 58:32Speaker 4: Shout out on Cloud. Not a sponsor by them all.
- 58:35Speaker 1: Yeah, great shoes for my career, but not a plug.
- 58:39Speaker 1: They I have zero relationship with on Cloud for the record,
- 58:44Speaker 1: I have three pairs of on Cloud shoes and any
- 58:47Speaker 1: given rotation, I have a dirty pair of on cloud sneakers,
- 58:50Speaker 1: I have a less dirty pair of on cloud sneakers,
- 58:53Speaker 1: and I have like a relatively dressy that I would wear.
- 58:56Speaker 2: With like pants. Oh, the street shoes they're like, yeah.
- 58:58Speaker 1: They're like flat bottom like they're sneakers, but they're like
- 59:01Speaker 1: flat bottom like they're a little bit more addressed the
- 59:04Speaker 1: wear with jeans, like the Genos or whatever. As the
- 59:09Speaker 1: clean normal sneakers over time become the dirty ones, then
- 59:13Speaker 1: I buy a new pair of clean ones.
- 59:15Speaker 4: And then they just cycle their way through.
- 59:16Speaker 1: So when I leave the house, yeah, mental check, Am
- 59:19Speaker 1: I going to practice? Am I going to grind on
- 59:21Speaker 1: the field all day dirty on clouds all day long?
- 59:25Speaker 1: And then I make my decisions from there. So I
- 59:27Speaker 1: got three shoes in the rotation. That's number one.
- 59:30Speaker 4: Number two.
- 59:32Speaker 5: My dad's fist bumping by the way he my dad
- 59:35Speaker 5: is a big believer.
- 59:36Speaker 1: I'm a big but when my kids leave that and
- 59:38Speaker 1: this is a we could go on and on, like
- 59:39Speaker 1: my kids love leaving the house with poor footwear. It's
- 59:44Speaker 1: a teenage thing. Yeah, Like there will go to like
- 59:48Speaker 1: a baseball game, like a say, we're going to like
- 59:50Speaker 1: the Charlotte Knights.
- 59:51Speaker 2: Which is like a minor league baseball team uptown.
- 59:54Speaker 1: They'll walk out of the house and like flip flops,
- 59:56Speaker 1: and I'm like, swag man, No, I'm like, like, what
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: happens if all of a sudden, you got you get
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: called to run the bases at the seventh inning stretch?
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: Like That's how my mind is. You never know when
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: a basketball game breaks out and you got bad shoes.
- 1:00:09Speaker 2: You're not ready for opportunity. You're not ready.
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: Like what if all of a sudden, it's like we
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: need a kid to come and catch a ball in
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: center field for season tickets and you wear in flip flops.
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: They wear flip flops and crocs. There's times they've gone
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: to school with no shoes on. It's a very weird thing. Anyway,
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: to answer your question, shoes. Number one. If I'm going
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: to like we do a lot of baseball with the boys,
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: I have a bucket in my car, so I have
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: to have a bucket of baseballs at all time. Number one,
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: you never know when you got to do flips. But
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: more importantly, it's my chair. That's what I sit on,
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: carried around, put it down. That's my chair, whether I'm
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: coaching or just as a parent. So I got my
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: bucket at all times.
- 1:00:45Speaker 2: Some soft toss in.
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: Never know when you need soft toss, and never know
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: when you need a seat, especially if your shoes are uncomfortable.
- 1:00:51Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: Number three, because there's a lot that I that I
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: have on me at all times. But those are probably
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: the two biggest ones.
- 1:01:01Speaker 5: A good hat, I feel like you have a yeah yeah, Greg, Yeah.
- 1:01:05Speaker 2: That's a great one.
- 1:01:07Speaker 4: Yeah yeah yeah.
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: The shades I more hit or missed. But there's one
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: hundred percent of the time if you see me outside
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: at any of the kids sports stuff, I got a
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: hat on. And it's got to be a hat you're
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: willing to that's a really good call. It's got to
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: be a hat you're willing to get sweaty. So I
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: have certain hats at home that if I know there's
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: any chance, like I go my wife walks me to
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: walk the dog with her, it's got to be a
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: sweat hat.
- 1:01:27Speaker 2: Oh yeah.
- 1:01:28Speaker 4: And then there's hats.
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: That you you might get them a little damp, but
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: like they're not going to be sweat through.
- 1:01:34Speaker 4: Because you got to keep those nice. So I have
- 1:01:37Speaker 4: sweat hats.
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: I have casual hats, and then like nicer hats that
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: you know you're not going to mess up.
- 1:01:42Speaker 4: So yeah, good hat, good shoes.
- 1:01:44Speaker 2: And I gotta have my bucket. Gotta have the bucket.
- 1:01:46Speaker 5: And then I got a question here for you. I
- 1:01:48Speaker 5: thought it'd be fun if you read it. And we
- 1:01:50Speaker 5: usually we shout the tag at the top.
- 1:01:53Speaker 4: All right, here we go, Joe Underscore. Is that what
- 1:01:56Speaker 4: you call those?
- 1:01:57Speaker 2: Yes? Yeah, yeah, yeah, union still called all right?
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: So on Instagram, this is Joe Underscore, Sarcos ninety one
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: Underscore Instagram. He has Instagram in his handle, Like that
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: just means.
- 1:02:08Speaker 2: It's from its So is that wow?
- 1:02:10Speaker 3: Underscore, Joe underscorees Sarcos ninety one.
- 1:02:14Speaker 2: Got it all? Joe.
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: I'm not a I'm not a great SOI media guy,
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: Joe Underscore. I was like, this guy has Instagram in his.
- 1:02:20Speaker 5: Handle Dad convention, Like, my entire process is gone now
- 1:02:24Speaker 5: I gotta read.
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: Joe Sarcos have multiple handles, but he just can't keep
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: them all straight, so he enables him like Underscore TikTok,
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: Underscore Snap Joe Sarcos, We got it anyway, all right,
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: question by.
- 1:02:40Speaker 4: Joe Underscore Sarcos ninety one. It's written better here.
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: What is the biggest dad win and dad fail you've experienced.
- 1:02:47Speaker 4: We've we've have assumed to be we error on the.
- 1:02:53Speaker 2: Grand this is this is good, This is good. I
- 1:02:56Speaker 2: do that and everybody like you.
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: No, it's not dumb, it's grammatic incorrect, but it's fine.
- 1:03:03Speaker 2: Yeah, we have not weave, have they?
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: So the apostrophe the apostrophe ve is the contraction for
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: the word half, so we don't need weave and have
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: they're both the same anyway, gumbling Anyway, we have a
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: soon to be three year old quote parentheses Noah and
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: as soon to be one year old Violet. So I've
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: had a lot of both. My biggest dad wink.
- 1:03:33Speaker 3: This is probably when the missus was wrong on something
- 1:03:35Speaker 3: she likes. Yeah, the steer and you're kind of like, hey,
- 1:03:38Speaker 3: I was kind of right on that I'm.
- 1:03:39Speaker 2: Trying to think.
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: You know, it's amazing. I'm thinking so hard that I
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: haven't had that. I I've had way less wins than
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: right now.
- 1:03:46Speaker 4: You would think I'm really playing this uff, like.
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: Oh my god, I got a laundry list. I have
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: a lot more fails. What about biggest win from this
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: week with your daughter? Try my biggest biggest win this week?
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: I think the biggest win this week was like my
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: daughter the first night, going in, getting to like walk
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: that like little like mini red carpet of the first night,
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: and like everyone takes a picture with their date, you know,
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: their plus one, and like probably is the only time
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: I've ever done any like event with just her, without
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: my wife or without the boys, So just the two
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: of us. Like she got all dressed up, did her hair,
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: couldn't help her much, but did her. She did her hair,
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: did her little makeup routine. She looked cute in her
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: little dress, walked in together, got to stand in front
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: of the step and repeat, like take a picture. And
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: immediately after she's like, Dad, will you send that to me?
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: And I was like, she wants.
- 1:04:38Speaker 2: To share this, like she wants to crack a cold
- 1:04:41Speaker 2: one that she.
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: Wants to She wanted to share it like it's she
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: thought it was cool to share a picture of her
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: and her dad, so like that felt that felt good.
- 1:04:51Speaker 2: Greg, That's a huge win.
- 1:04:52Speaker 4: That is a huge win.
- 1:04:57Speaker 2: Guys, we know what that sound is. That is lollipop.
- 1:05:00Speaker 5: I got one of their new flavors, BlackBerry Vanilla right
- 1:05:03Speaker 5: here in front of me. We also have our raspberry
- 1:05:07Speaker 5: Sherbet right there in front of Will. We're crazy about
- 1:05:10Speaker 5: these new flavors. We're really crazy about any.
- 1:05:13Speaker 2: And all of the flavors. Will's also God, the Chris Apple.
- 1:05:17Speaker 2: Is that a classic grape? I see? Yeah?
- 1:05:19Speaker 3: Dude, do you get new designs? I don't know the
- 1:05:22Speaker 3: allipop siicos out there.
- 1:05:23Speaker 2: You're gonna understand. These are new designs, sleek, badass.
- 1:05:28Speaker 5: They're getting all the cans refresh, not that they needed them,
- 1:05:32Speaker 5: but these new logos, these new kind of like.
- 1:05:35Speaker 2: The stronger color. Yeah, in a metallicke machine to it. Yeah,
- 1:05:41Speaker 2: cooking with gas. Tell them how they're gonna get a
- 1:05:44Speaker 2: free one. Well, they've been cooking with gas as well.
- 1:05:47Speaker 5: Just said, you can get any lollipop, you get two flavors,
- 1:05:50Speaker 5: doesn't matter, mix or match. You will get one for free.
- 1:05:55Speaker 5: That's by any two cans of lollipop in store, and
- 1:05:57Speaker 5: they will pay you back for one works on any
- 1:06:00Speaker 5: flavor at any retailer. Go to drinkollipop dot com, forward
- 1:06:05Speaker 5: slash BWTB to redeem and Ollipop is sold online at
- 1:06:10Speaker 5: drinkollipop dot Com and Amazon and available in the soda
- 1:06:14Speaker 5: aisle with the Chill beverages at thousands of retailers nationwide,
- 1:06:19Speaker 5: including wal martin Target, Amen, Ptsikos. Let's get back to
- 1:06:25Speaker 5: Greg Olsen for your teenage daughter to want to spend
- 1:06:29Speaker 5: time with you in those settings, as silly as it sounds,
- 1:06:32Speaker 5: and I think for people that have younger kids like
- 1:06:34Speaker 5: it probably sounds like a given.
- 1:06:36Speaker 4: Yeah, it's not a given.
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: So I'll take any of those wins that I can get.
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: One on one time when you have multiple kids is
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: super special, and I need to do a better job
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: making sure that that one on one time is not
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: always doing things that I want to do when I
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: want to do it and they just tag along. But
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: also being like, what do you want to do on
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: your free time, even if it's something I wouldn't necessarily
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: be interested in. I think that's important. I don't always
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: do that. But I think that's important and something I'm
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: working on.
- 1:07:05Speaker 5: And we can we can skip the biggest dad loss
- 1:07:08Speaker 5: that was in that question. And uh, just for time
- 1:07:11Speaker 5: purposes to close this out, what.
- 1:07:14Speaker 2: I have one more were sick. Let's hear it.
- 1:07:18Speaker 3: Let's test chlora. Do your kids take any supplements? And
- 1:07:21Speaker 3: if so, what and at what age did they say they.
- 1:07:24Speaker 4: Do not take any supplement?
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: What great is your oldest he'll be a rising freshman, okay, and.
- 1:07:30Speaker 2: He's not on anything yet. No, my old man had
- 1:07:32Speaker 2: me on creatine in middle school.
- 1:07:34Speaker 4: Any colostrum, sorry, colostrum, isn't colostrum from like breast milk?
- 1:07:40Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, No, I mean not since they're he ain't
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: taking No, I.
- 1:07:46Speaker 2: Was wondering if you have. I'm not knocking it.
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: We have a lot of friends whose kids are on
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: supplements and stuff, and I think supplements has a has
- 1:07:53Speaker 1: an interesting rap Like I don't think there's any problems
- 1:07:56Speaker 1: with like having a protein shake. We definitely my dad
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: made us tons of like protein shakes when we were
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: in middle school.
- 1:08:01Speaker 4: In high school, we would pound you.
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: Remember, in a carnation instant breakfast and it was like
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: that powder and you'd mix it with the milk, and
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: my dad would just make us like drink it until we.
- 1:08:10Speaker 2: Were got to get the.
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: I was thin and skinny as a young kid, not
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: so much anymore, but like I would classify like supplements.
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: Like my dad in high school made us pack two
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: peanut butter and jelly sandwiches every single day to go
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: to school with only our backpack. And that was like
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: our mid morning and late afternoon snack before practice. In
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: today's day and age, you would get it in like
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: a fancy protein bar or a shake or something, but
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: that's a supplement. It's a calorie dense, protein rich snack.
- 1:08:39Speaker 2: And you got your boy on some snacks.
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: And then we try to and yeah, we try to
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: have them bring like whether their protein bars or just
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: you know, there's a bazillion of them, and once they
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: find some that we like, we just try to fill
- 1:08:50Speaker 1: up the drawers at home. And instead of grabbing a
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: bag of cheese, it's or a bag of re sized candy,
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: like yeah, some more something decent, but not we're not
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: taking like pills run doing.
- 1:09:00Speaker 2: Like no powers, no, no injections. We're thinking about the injection.
- 1:09:04Speaker 5: It's more so dead so dad, Yeah, sos dot c
- 1:09:09Speaker 5: l o R on Instagram.
- 1:09:10Speaker 2: Thank you for the questions. That's like zero supplements.
- 1:09:14Speaker 4: As of this moment, we are all of our nutrition
- 1:09:16Speaker 4: is coming through what we eat.
- 1:09:18Speaker 2: I love you should check out the monohydrate.
- 1:09:20Speaker 5: We check out the gloster too, Coloster, that's where it's
- 1:09:25Speaker 5: at for just final words, final thoughts.
- 1:09:29Speaker 2: You got two guys here with kids all under five.
- 1:09:33Speaker 2: Do you have any advice?
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: I feel like I've given it for a guy that
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: doesn't know a lot. I feel like I've offered a
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: lot of advice. I think in closing the best way
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: I could summarize my first fifteen years of parenting. And
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: I don't know what the next stage looks like. I've
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: never had a high school kid yet, so we'll tackle
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: that when we get there with the oldest. I'll have
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: a high school kid in six months, so I'm sure
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: that'll change a lot. I think the biggest advice that
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: I would offer is mostly like anything in my life,
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: like through all the shit that I've done wrong, so
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: like enjoy them, love on them, embrace all the moments
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: that you get, like even we're all in such a
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: hurry to like go to the next thing. And that
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: was always my personality, Like I was always thinking what's next,
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: what's next. It's never good enough, it's never good enough. Like,
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: don't apply those standards to your own kids, because just
- 1:10:20Speaker 1: let them be, Like, let them experience life, give them guidance,
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: give them advice, tell them when they're wrong, be very
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: honest with them, good and bad. But they're gonna mess up,
- 1:10:31Speaker 1: and there is you have to give yourself a little grace.
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: You have to give them a little bit grace. Don't
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: look at their failures like your failures. I think that
- 1:10:38Speaker 1: sometimes is hard, right, Like we all look at someone
- 1:10:41Speaker 1: that we're responsible for, and you love so much with
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: every ounce of your soul, and when things don't go
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: their way, like you take it personal and you're like,
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: I'm failing. I'm doing a bad job as a parent.
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: If I did better, they would be better. You know,
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: all kids are gonna screw up. All kids are gonna
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: have bad days. Like, give yourself a little grace, give
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: them a little grace. I have not always been good
- 1:10:59Speaker 1: at that, but man, just enjoy special moments with them.
- 1:11:04Speaker 1: Love them because I'm three years away from my first
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: one leaving college, and who knows if they ever come back.
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: And then five years from my two leaving college, I'm
- 1:11:13Speaker 1: five years away from having no kids in my house.
- 1:11:15Speaker 2: So as yes as.
- 1:11:16Speaker 1: The days are, and think about that, right, like as
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: busy as our days are and as frustrating at times,
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: and we all the lives that we live which are
- 1:11:22Speaker 1: so busy, And I'm five years away from all three
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: of my kids being out of the house and over
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: eighteen and.
- 1:11:29Speaker 4: Whether they ever come home.
- 1:11:30Speaker 1: You hope they don't come home, Maybe they do, hopefully
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: they want to come visit you. But uh, that's a
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: scary part. Like, yeah, your time with your kids yet
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: eighteen years of it guaranteed and fifteen of them for
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: my oldest is already done.
- 1:11:46Speaker 2: Five summers left. Ye dude, Well we thank you. Greg. Yeah.
- 1:11:51Speaker 5: I hate that it feels like we're ushering him out,
- 1:11:53Speaker 5: but I just know he's got a fun golf tournament.
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: Go au golf that I can sit here and talk
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: about all the things that I've done wrong parenting all day.
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: So this is actually a great pod for me to
- 1:12:02Speaker 1: get on. Yes, it's very therapeutic, isn't it, to like
- 1:12:06Speaker 1: just shoot shit with the boys, and no doubt all
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: the things you don't know anything about some things you
- 1:12:10Speaker 1: think you know about and things that you know virtually
- 1:12:13Speaker 1: will completely fuck up.
- 1:12:15Speaker 4: It's kind of a very freeing experience.
- 1:12:17Speaker 2: Let you get ahead of it. We love you.
- 1:12:19Speaker 3: We're positioned as we're not experts, we have no pets
- 1:12:22Speaker 3: going on, but we're just gonna talk.
