Transcript
- 0:00Welcome back to our continuing conversation on
- 0:03Refined for a Purpose. In our last conversation,
- 0:07we discovered that what people intend concerning
- 0:10our lives does not have the final authority over
- 0:14our story. Joseph could say, You meant evil against
- 0:19me, but God meant it for good. We learned that
- 0:23the pit was not the ending. The false accusation
- 0:26was not the ending. The prison, was not the ending.
- 0:31And sometimes what looks like rejection may contain
- 0:34redirection. What looks like delay may contain
- 0:37preparation. What looks wasted may still be used
- 0:41by God. But perhaps one of the most important
- 0:45things we discovered was this. Joseph did not
- 0:49simply come out of prison. Joseph came out prepared
- 0:53for Pharaoh. And today, I want us to go one step
- 0:57further. Because it is possible to spend so much
- 1:01time praying for God to change our circumstances
- 1:05that we never ask what God is trying to change
- 1:08within us. We pray for the door. We pray for
- 1:12the promotion. We pray for the opportunity. We
- 1:16pray for the ministry. We pray for the marriage.
- 1:19We pray for the business. We pray for influence.
- 1:22We pray for resources. We pray for greater responsibility.
- 1:27But perhaps heaven is asking another question
- 1:30if I give you what you are asking for Can your
- 1:34character carry it? Because sometimes the greatest
- 1:38danger is not that you will never reach the place
- 1:41you prayed for Sometimes the greatest danger
- 1:45is reaching it before your character is ready
- 1:48to survive there Joseph eventually had power
- 1:52Daniel eventually had influence David eventually
- 1:56had a throne Moses eventually led a nation. Peter
- 2:01eventually became a leader in the early church.
- 2:04But before we become fascinated with where God
- 2:06took them, we need to examine what happened to
- 2:09their character along the way. Because perhaps
- 2:12the fire is not only preparing the blessing,
- 2:15perhaps the fire is preparing you for the weight
- 2:18of the blessing. And that brings us to our continuing
- 2:21conversation today. Can God Trust Your Integrity?
- 2:25Listen carefully. I'm not asking. Have you ever
- 2:30failed? If that were the definition of integrity,
- 2:34many of the people God used throughout scripture
- 2:36would immediately be disqualified. David failed.
- 2:41Moses failed. Peter failed. Abraham failed. Jacob
- 2:45failed. Yet God continued working in their lives.
- 2:50So integrity cannot simply mean that you have
- 2:52never made a mistake. Integrity goes deeper.
- 2:56Integrity is about what remains true about your
- 2:59character when your character is tested. Who
- 3:02are you when nobody is watching? Who are you
- 3:06when compromise would be easier? Who are you
- 3:09when you're angry? Who are you when you have
- 3:11power? Who are you when you are hurt? Who are
- 3:15you when somebody offers you something you desperately
- 3:18want, but receiving it would require compromising
- 3:22what you believe? Who are you when doing the
- 3:25right thing costs you something? Because integrity
- 3:28is rarely revealed when doing right is easy.
- 3:33Integrity is revealed when compromise would be
- 3:37easier. Look at Joseph. Before Joseph ever stood
- 3:41before Pharaoh, he stood in Potiphar's house.
- 3:45Genesis 39 tells us that Potiphar trusted Joseph
- 3:48with practically everything under his authority.
- 3:52Then temptation came. Potiphar's wife attempted
- 3:56to seduce Joseph, and Joseph said, how then can
- 3:59I do this great wickedness and sin against God?
- 4:03Genesis 39 .9. Notice something. Joseph's integrity
- 4:08was tested before his promotion. Nobody from
- 4:12his family was there. His father wasn't watching.
- 4:15His brothers weren't watching. There was no church
- 4:18congregation watching. There was no audience.
- 4:20There was no social media. There was no public
- 4:23reputation to protect. Joseph was far from home.
- 4:27And he still understood, God sees me. Joseph
- 4:30ran. And ironically, doing the right thing did
- 4:34not immediately make his life easier. It sent
- 4:37him to prison. Think about that. He protected
- 4:40his integrity and still suffered. And this is
- 4:43where integrity becomes expensive. Sometimes
- 4:46doing the right thing does not produce an immediate
- 4:49reward. Sometimes telling the truth creates problems.
- 4:54Sometimes refusing compromise costs an opportunity.
- 4:58Sometimes setting a boundary costs a relationship.
- 5:02Sometimes refusing to participate in wrongdoing
- 5:05makes you unpopular. Sometimes integrity will
- 5:08cost you something before it gives you anything.
- 5:12But Joseph teaches us. Never sacrifice tomorrow's
- 5:16purpose for today's opportunity. Because Potiphar's
- 5:19wife could offer Joseph a moment. But God was
- 5:23preparing Joseph for a nation. And there are
- 5:26moments when you must decide whether you want
- 5:29what is being offered now more than you want
- 5:32what God is preparing later. But Joseph is only
- 5:36one dimension of integrity. Because integrity
- 5:39is not tested only through temptation. Sometimes
- 5:43integrity is tested through suffering. Look at
- 5:47Job. God said something extraordinary about Job.
- 5:51In Job 2 -3, God says that Job still held fast
- 5:55to his integrity even after extraordinary suffering.
- 5:58Job lost possessions. He lost children. He lost
- 6:02health. His life became almost unrecognizable.
- 6:06And yet the question surrounding Job's story
- 6:08was essentially... Will his relationship with
- 6:11God survive when life stops rewarding him? That
- 6:16is another kind of integrity. It is easy to worship
- 6:19when everything is working. It is easy to testify
- 6:23when the doors are opening. It is easy to say
- 6:26God is faithful when the prayer has already been
- 6:29answered. But what happens when heaven feels
- 6:32silent? What happens when you don't understand?
- 6:36What happens when you prayed and the situation
- 6:39became worse? Job struggled. Job questioned.
- 6:44Job grieved. And later, God corrected some of
- 6:48Job's understanding. But through the devastation,
- 6:52Job did not simply abandon God. His integrity
- 6:55was being tested through suffering. And this
- 6:58teaches us integrity is not only about what you
- 7:01refuse to do when tempted. It is also about who
- 7:04you remain when life hurts. But there is another
- 7:08test. Can your integrity survive scrutiny? Daniel's
- 7:13enemies hated his influence. They wanted something
- 7:16they could use against him. Daniel 6 -4 tells
- 7:19us that officials tried to find grounds for charges
- 7:22against Daniel in his conduct of government affairs.
- 7:26Think about that in today's language. They investigated
- 7:28him. They examined his administration. They searched
- 7:32for negligence. They searched for corruption.
- 7:35They searched for misconduct. They wanted evidence.
- 7:38And scripture says, they could find no corruption
- 7:40in him because he was trustworthy and neither
- 7:43corrupt nor negligent. What a testimony. Daniel's
- 7:47integrity survived an adversarial examination,
- 7:50not an examination conducted by friends trying
- 7:53to protect him, an examination conducted by enemies
- 7:56trying to destroy him. Imagine somebody examining
- 8:00your decisions, your records, your conversations,
- 8:04your financial dealings, your treatment of people,
- 8:08your workplace conduct, your private messages,
- 8:11your public statements. Not because they like
- 8:13you, because they are looking for something they
- 8:16can use against you. Daniel's enemies searched,
- 8:19and they could not find corruption. Eventually
- 8:22they realized that if they were going to attack
- 8:24Daniel, They would have to attack him concerning
- 8:27his faithfulness to God. That is extraordinary
- 8:30integrity, and it raises an uncomfortable question
- 8:33for us. Would our integrity survive investigation?
- 8:37Now bring this into the world we live in today.
- 8:40We live in a generation where almost everything
- 8:43leaves a trail. Messages can be saved, screenshots
- 8:47can be taken, conversations can be recorded,
- 8:50cameras are everywhere, posts can resurface years
- 8:53later. Private behavior can suddenly become public
- 8:57information, and sometimes people spend enormous
- 9:00energy protecting their image while neglecting
- 9:03their character. But hear me carefully. Social
- 9:06media does not create the crack. It amplifies
- 9:10what was already there. The screenshot is not
- 9:13the integrity problem. The behavior inside the
- 9:16screenshot is. The recording is not the integrity
- 9:20problem. The conduct captured in the recording
- 9:23is. The exposure may be painful, but sometimes
- 9:27exposure simply reveals something that character
- 9:30should have addressed earlier. So perhaps we
- 9:33should stop asking, how do I protect my image?
- 9:36And start asking, God, refine my character. Because
- 9:41image is what people think you are. Character
- 9:43is who you actually are. And integrity is when
- 9:47those two are increasingly becoming the same
- 9:49person. Let me ask it another way. Would your
- 9:53integrity survive the screenshot? Not because
- 9:56everybody deserves access to your private life.
- 9:59They don't. Not because every accusation is true.
- 10:03It isn't. Not because every recording tells the
- 10:06entire story. It doesn't. But because integrity
- 10:10asks us to live with an awareness that who we
- 10:12are privately matters before God, even if nobody
- 10:16else ever sees it. Samuel understood something
- 10:19about this. When his leadership was nearing its
- 10:22conclusion, Samuel stood before Israel and essentially
- 10:25invited them to examine his public service. In
- 10:291 Samuel 12 he asked, Whose ox have I taken?
- 10:33Whose donkey have I taken? Whom have I cheated?
- 10:36Whom have I oppressed? From whose hand have I
- 10:40accepted a bribe? Samuel was essentially saying,
- 10:43examine my record. That is powerful. He wasn't
- 10:47claiming sinless perfection. He was talking about
- 10:50integrity and stewardship and leadership. He
- 10:53could stand before the people he had served and
- 10:55invite examination. And that brings us to another
- 10:58dimension. Can God trust you with power? Power
- 11:03reveals things. Money reveals things. Authority
- 11:06reveals things. Success reveals things. Sometimes
- 11:11we think hardship is the greatest test of character.
- 11:14It isn't always. Sometimes success is more dangerous.
- 11:18than suffering. When you have no authority, humility
- 11:22is easier. When you have no money, financial
- 11:26stewardship can remain theoretical. When nobody
- 11:29knows your name, pride has fewer opportunities.
- 11:33When nobody depends on your decisions, leadership
- 11:36integrity has not yet been fully tested. But
- 11:40what happens when people begin calling you important?
- 11:43What happens when your decisions affect other
- 11:45people's lives? What happens when you control
- 11:48resources? What happens when people cannot easily
- 11:52challenge you? Nehemiah understood this. As governor,
- 11:57Nehemiah had access to privileges previous governors
- 12:01had used. But in Nehemiah 5, he explains that
- 12:05because of the fear of God, he did not exploit
- 12:08the people the way others had. He had the right
- 12:10to certain benefits. But he understood that having
- 12:14authority does not mean you must use every privilege
- 12:17available to you. That is integrity. Integrity
- 12:22asks not only, can I do this? Sometimes integrity
- 12:27asks, should I? And that question becomes especially
- 12:32important when nobody around you has enough authority
- 12:35to stop you. But now we have to confront something
- 12:38else. Because there are people listening. who
- 12:42are thinking, I have already failed an integrity
- 12:45test. Maybe you lost your temper. Maybe you lied.
- 12:51Maybe you compromised. Maybe you made a decision
- 12:54that embarrassed you. Maybe something was exposed.
- 12:58Maybe you damaged someone's trust. Maybe your
- 13:01private character did not match your public confession.
- 13:04What then? Does integrity disappear forever?
- 13:08Look at David. David committed devastating sins,
- 13:13adultery, deception, abuse of authority, and
- 13:17ultimately, actions connected to Uriah's death.
- 13:21Scripture does not sanitize David's failure.
- 13:24God sent Nathan to confront him, and when David
- 13:28was confronted, eventually he said, I have sinned
- 13:32against the Lord. Psalm 51 gives us the language
- 13:36of a man whose failure had been exposed. Create
- 13:40in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right
- 13:43spirit within me. This is important, because
- 13:47integrity is not pretending you never failed.
- 13:51Integrity also reveals itself in how you respond
- 13:54when your failure is exposed. Do you lie? Do
- 13:58you blame? Do you manipulate? Do you attack everybody
- 14:03who tells the truth? Do you protect your image
- 14:06at the expense of repentance? Do you become humble
- 14:10enough to say, God, this is in me, change me?
- 14:15There is a difference between protecting your
- 14:17reputation and allowing God to restore your character.
- 14:21Sometimes conviction is mercy. Sometimes God
- 14:25exposes a crack privately because he loves you
- 14:28too much to allow it to become a collapse publicly.
- 14:33And perhaps that is why some of the uncomfortable
- 14:35things God has been showing you during this season.
- 14:39are not evidence of rejection. They may be evidence
- 14:43of refinement. Peter learned this. Peter believed
- 14:47he was stronger than he actually was. He told
- 14:50Jesus that even if everybody else fell away,
- 14:53he would remain. But pressure exposed something
- 14:57in Peter. Fear came, and Peter denied Jesus three
- 15:01times. The rooster crowed. Peter realized what
- 15:05he had done, and he wept. But Peter's story did
- 15:08not end beside that fire. After the resurrection,
- 15:12Jesus restored Peter. And eventually, the man
- 15:16who denied Jesus under pressure became a man
- 15:19who could publicly proclaim him. What happened?
- 15:23Peter discovered his weakness and weakness acknowledged
- 15:26before God can become a place of transformation.
- 15:30That is why integrity is not arrogance. A person
- 15:35of integrity does not walk around saying, I would
- 15:39never do that. A mature person understands, without
- 15:43the grace of God, without the Holy Spirit, without
- 15:47discipline, without boundaries, without wisdom,
- 15:51I am capable of making terrible decisions. That
- 15:55awareness produces humility, and humility protects
- 15:59integrity. This brings us to something we cannot
- 16:03ignore. The Holy Spirit produces self -control,
- 16:07but you must practice discipline. Galatians 5
- 16:11includes self -control among the fruit of the
- 16:14Spirit. The Holy Spirit works within us. He convicts.
- 16:18He transforms. He strengthens. He produces new
- 16:22desires. But scripture also repeatedly calls
- 16:26believers to obedience, discipline, vigilance,
- 16:31and wisdom. You still decide whether to send
- 16:34the message. You still decide whether to say
- 16:37the words. You still decide whether to walk into
- 16:40the room. You still decide whether to remain
- 16:43in the conversation. You still decide whether
- 16:46to entertain the temptation. You still decide
- 16:50whether to tell the truth. You still decide whether
- 16:54to apologize. You still decide whether to walk
- 16:57away. Spiritual maturity is not passive. Sometimes,
- 17:03the most spiritual thing you can do is stop yourself,
- 17:06control your tongue, control your anger, walk
- 17:09away from temptation, refuse the conversation,
- 17:13put down the phone, leave the room, set the boundary,
- 17:17tell the truth, apologize, accept correction.
- 17:21Because discipline protects things that emotion
- 17:24can destroy in seconds, and now perhaps we can
- 17:27see the progression, God refines your character.
- 17:31Character develops through discipline. Discipline
- 17:34strengthens self -control. Self -control protects
- 17:37integrity. Integrity makes you trustworthy. And
- 17:41trustworthiness increases your capacity to carry
- 17:44responsibility. That is why this conversation
- 17:47matters. You may be praying for greater responsibility
- 17:50while God is working on your reaction. You may
- 17:54be praying for influence while God is working
- 17:56on your tongue. You may be praying for financial
- 17:59increase while God is examining your stewardship.
- 18:03You may be praying for leadership while God is
- 18:05watching how you treat people who cannot benefit
- 18:08you. You may be praying for a platform while
- 18:10God is working on who you are when there is no
- 18:13audience. You may be asking God, when will you
- 18:16promote me? While God may be asking, can I trust
- 18:19you there? And nobody demonstrates this more
- 18:21perfectly than Jesus. Jesus was tempted. Jesus
- 18:25was rejected. Jesus was falsely accused. Jesus
- 18:28was misunderstood. Jesus was betrayed. Jesus
- 18:32was mocked. Jesus possessed authority. Jesus
- 18:35attracted crowds. Jesus experienced abandonment.
- 18:39Jesus stood before political and religious power.
- 18:42And through every test, his character remained
- 18:44perfectly aligned with the will of God. Satan
- 18:47offered him shortcuts. He refused. Crowds wanted
- 18:50to make him king on their terms. He withdrew.
- 18:54People insulted him. He did not allow their hatred
- 18:56to redefine His mission. Even in suffering, He
- 19:00remained obedient. Jesus shows us perfect integrity,
- 19:04and we will never reproduce that perfection through
- 19:06human strength alone. We need the Holy Spirit.
- 19:10We need grace. We need the Word of God. We need
- 19:13prayer. We need correction. We need community.
- 19:18We need discipline. We need boundaries. And we
- 19:21need the humility to remain teachable. Because
- 19:24the goal is not to become people who are excellent
- 19:27at hiding cracks. The goal is to allow God to
- 19:31refine them. So maybe before we finish today,
- 19:35there are questions we need to bring before God.
- 19:38Can God trust my integrity when nobody is watching?
- 19:41Can God trust my integrity when I am tempted?
- 19:44Can God trust my integrity when I am angry? Can
- 19:47God trust my integrity when I am hurt? Can God
- 19:50trust my integrity with money? Can God trust
- 19:52my integrity with authority? Can God trust my
- 19:55integrity with another person's vulnerability?
- 19:58Can God trust my integrity with confidential
- 20:00information? Can God trust my integrity when
- 20:03telling the truth could cost me something? Can
- 20:06God trust my integrity when I have enough power
- 20:08to retaliate? Can God trust my integrity when
- 20:12success finally comes? And maybe the deepest
- 20:15question Can God trust me with the very thing
- 20:18I have been praying for? Because perhaps God
- 20:21is not withholding your purpose. Perhaps he is
- 20:23refining the person who will have to carry it.
- 20:26Joseph needed more than a dream. He needed character.
- 20:30Daniel needed more than intelligence. He needed
- 20:32integrity. David needed more than anointing.
- 20:35He needed character capable of carrying kingship.
- 20:39Peter needed more than passion. He needed refinement.
- 20:42And we need more than gifts. More than talent.
- 20:45more than charisma, more than education, more
- 20:49than connections, more than opportunity, we need
- 20:52character. Because your gift may open a door
- 20:56that your character must keep open. Your talent
- 20:59may take you somewhere that your integrity must
- 21:01sustain you. And your anointing does not eliminate
- 21:04your responsibility to live a disciplined life.
- 21:07God may give the gift. God may open the door.
- 21:11God may provide the opportunity. But there are
- 21:13things we must learn to preserve. So don't spend
- 21:16your entire life protecting your image. Allow
- 21:19God to refine your character. Don't be afraid
- 21:23when the Holy Spirit shows you something that
- 21:25needs correction. That conviction may be protecting
- 21:28your future. Don't despise discipline. Don't
- 21:31reject accountability. Don't run from correction.
- 21:35Because sometimes God reveals the crack before
- 21:38the collapse. And that is exactly where Our continuing
- 21:42conversation is going next. In our next conversation,
- 21:46the crack before the collapse. We're going to
- 21:49talk about the small compromises we ignore. The
- 21:52attitudes we excuse. The boundaries we slowly
- 21:56move. The habits nobody knows about. The warning
- 21:59signs we dismiss. The conviction we keep silencing.
- 22:04Because collapse rarely begins on the day everybody
- 22:07sees it. Usually something has been cracking
- 22:10quietly for a long time, and sometimes God's
- 22:13greatest mercy is allowing you to see the crack
- 22:16while there is still time to repair it. So today,
- 22:19don't ask only, God, when is my season changing?
- 22:23Ask, God, what in me must change before my season
- 22:27changes? Because you are not simply being prepared
- 22:31to arrive. You are being prepared to remain.
- 22:33You are not simply being prepared to receive.
- 22:36You are being prepared to carry. You are not
- 22:39simply being prepared for visibility. You are
- 22:42being prepared for responsibility. And perhaps
- 22:45this fire has been doing more than you realize.
- 22:48God has been refining your character, strengthening
- 22:51your discipline, teaching you self -control,
- 22:54protecting your integrity, increasing your capacity,
- 22:58preparing you for responsibility. Because the
- 23:01question is not only whether God can get you
- 23:03there. The question is, can God trust your integrity
- 23:06when you arrive? You're being refined for a purpose.
