Transcript
- 0:09Speaker 1: Inside the Birds is back. What's up, everybody, It's Jeff Mosher,
- 0:16Speaker 1: It's Adam Kaplan and the twenty twenty six NFL Draft
- 0:20Speaker 1: is in the books. Day three is done. The Eagles
- 0:24Speaker 1: have made several picks interest some interesting ones, five picks
- 0:28Speaker 1: in total, and Adam will go through it. Let's just
- 0:31Speaker 1: first give the names. Fifth round Cole Payton, North Dakota State, QB.
- 0:36Speaker 1: Sixth round Micah Morris and og offensive guard out of
- 0:39Speaker 1: Georgia chause, of course, you gotta have a Georgia guy.
- 0:42Speaker 1: Two three seventh round picks cole Is Newski at Texas
- 0:45Speaker 1: Tech safety. You are Bernard I hope I pronounced that correctly,
- 0:49Speaker 1: out of Nigeria. We'll get into him. He has not
- 0:52Speaker 1: played any organized football. And their last pick Keishawn James
- 0:57Speaker 1: Nuby out of New Mexico and edge rusher. And I
- 1:00Speaker 1: always wonder at him when the Eagles do this, like
- 1:02Speaker 1: when they took my lotta. How do players feel when
- 1:05Speaker 1: they get drafted after a guy who's never played it
- 1:08Speaker 1: down of football?
- 1:10Speaker 2: I know, yeah it is, but but you know, Joe
- 1:13Speaker 2: Bantner told us many years ago that they really shouldn't
- 1:16Speaker 2: have done it this way. I though we understand why
- 1:20Speaker 2: the third day and we know it's a scouts time,
- 1:22Speaker 2: this so called passion picks, and so you know there's
- 1:25Speaker 2: they get they turn into the scouts Bill Paul and
- 1:27Speaker 2: he has told us that, yeah, Joe said it was
- 1:30Speaker 2: more darth rows.
- 1:31Speaker 3: These are and this is when they were really bad.
- 1:34Speaker 2: This is this is the when they get to the
- 1:36Speaker 2: like Greg Lloyd junior, undersized linebackers. You know it's yeah, yeah,
- 1:44Speaker 2: it was a it was a disaster, but you take
- 1:47Speaker 2: these seriously.
- 1:48Speaker 3: This is where they got Jordan Malata.
- 1:50Speaker 2: We never played football his life at twenty eighteen, and
- 1:54Speaker 2: there's like a ball play.
- 1:55Speaker 3: Yes he played.
- 1:56Speaker 2: Rugby, but he never played football his life. Didn't even
- 1:58Speaker 2: know how to put a helmet on it. Okay, right,
- 2:00Speaker 2: And had Jeff Stalin not been at his workout at
- 2:03Speaker 2: IMG Academy, he probably would not have been an Eagle.
- 2:05Speaker 2: He was there, Uh, he smartly stayed on it. And
- 2:09Speaker 2: you know they I don't know if I have to
- 2:11Speaker 2: look at this, if Christneli is still their international diructor scouting.
- 2:14Speaker 2: You know, he just looked for anyone internationally. You know,
- 2:16Speaker 2: I don't know if he wasn't involved in this or not.
- 2:19Speaker 2: Well he would be if he was. He's still with
- 2:21Speaker 2: the team. Will look into it for sure. Former longtime
- 2:24Speaker 2: guarding the NFL, but he's with the with the Eagles
- 2:26Speaker 2: in a number of years. But yeah, it was an
- 2:29Speaker 2: interesting draft, you know, you and you have to not
- 2:31Speaker 2: you know, what's part of the draft is the guys
- 2:33Speaker 2: that they traded for Jonathan Grenard that counts.
- 2:35Speaker 3: They give up for picks. It absolutely as part of
- 2:37Speaker 3: the draft class that's always lived it that way.
- 2:40Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm very I'll be very curious interested to look
- 2:44Speaker 1: back on this draft in three or four years, especially
- 2:46Speaker 1: anybody from Day two or Day three, because it just
- 2:48Speaker 1: did not have the type of prospect. First of all,
- 2:52Speaker 1: I was shocked that Garrett nes Meyer.
- 2:53Speaker 3: Went so lately.
- 2:56Speaker 1: We know, yeah it's great, yeah, yeah, but like there
- 3:01Speaker 1: was a quarterback I never heard of who we went
- 3:02Speaker 1: before him. And then you know, I was a little
- 3:05Speaker 1: surprised this as a Penn Stater that you know, if
- 3:08Speaker 1: you would have told me two or three years ago
- 3:10Speaker 1: that Nick Singleton and Kitron Allen would be like late
- 3:13Speaker 1: day three guys, I'd be like, come on, are you
- 3:15Speaker 1: kidding me? And they actually had good Penn State careers,
- 3:18Speaker 1: but as Greg Cosel told us in our running back previews,
- 3:21Speaker 1: you know there's certain style of where they're not explosive,
- 3:24Speaker 1: they don't hit the home run. You know, Nick's a
- 3:26Speaker 1: downhill runner, one cut runner, k Tron doesn't have as
- 3:29Speaker 1: much juice and wiggle as others. But in general, like
- 3:33Speaker 1: you know, we've done this so many of these drafts,
- 3:34Speaker 1: it just was not one of those drafts where you
- 3:37Speaker 1: felt like, man, I could get like in the fifth round,
- 3:40Speaker 1: like some really good like role player, maybe potential start.
- 3:43Speaker 1: I mean, I'm not saying anybody these guys won't. I'm
- 3:45Speaker 1: just saying, like, you didn't get that kind of feedback
- 3:48Speaker 1: on these.
- 3:48Speaker 2: Guys except for tight end. Tight end was so deep
- 3:51Speaker 2: you felt the point get a guy in the fourth
- 3:52Speaker 2: or fifth to start for you. But overall it was
- 3:55Speaker 2: a weak draft. I mean it was in fact, yeah,
- 3:59Speaker 2: Justin Jolly was a guy fancy State some teams thought
- 4:01Speaker 2: to be a start at the next level. He went
- 4:02Speaker 2: in the fifth round, right, I know the Patriots who
- 4:06Speaker 2: are really happy to get reared in the tight end
- 4:10Speaker 2: from notre to day in a third round. But overall, yeah,
- 4:13Speaker 2: it was not a very strong draft. But getting back
- 4:16Speaker 2: to the Eagles. Let's get to the early intel that
- 4:18Speaker 2: we have.
- 4:19Speaker 1: We've got some good stuff.
- 4:20Speaker 3: We've got Yeah, I know you got something.
- 4:23Speaker 2: I'm very interesting how you describe our information on Col Payton.
- 4:27Speaker 3: I have my own.
- 4:28Speaker 1: Yeah. So yeah, I want to start out. Let's frame
- 4:31Speaker 1: it this way because I want you to start off
- 4:32Speaker 1: with a really interesting point that you made. When we
- 4:36Speaker 1: did the Quarterback preview show with Greg Cosel breaking down tape,
- 4:40Speaker 1: we got to Col Payton. Greg basically said, this is
- 4:44Speaker 1: going to be a guy where you're gonna have to
- 4:45Speaker 1: put some time into. He's a great athlete, dual threat quarterback,
- 4:49Speaker 1: can make throws, but he doesn't really play within the
- 4:51Speaker 1: pocket right, but he has athleticism that he said teams
- 4:55Speaker 1: are going to find really interesting. And you had a
- 4:57Speaker 1: really interesting comp nugget you had heard from from my
- 5:01Speaker 1: guest talking to people around the league, and.
- 5:03Speaker 2: That it was actually an area scout team said, because
- 5:07Speaker 2: I said, hey, you, who are the quarterbacks in your area?
- 5:10Speaker 3: And he said, blah blah blah.
- 5:11Speaker 2: He goes, oh, I got one kid from North Kota
- 5:15Speaker 2: State And I said, oh, really, I said this would
- 5:17Speaker 2: be interesting. I said, don't tell me it's called Peyton
- 5:19Speaker 2: he goes bingo, but he's not a quarterback at our level.
- 5:22Speaker 2: He'll be he's Taysom Hill at best. And Taysom Hill
- 5:25Speaker 2: was super explosive. You know, he's an incredible athlete, just incredible.
- 5:29Speaker 2: But this kid's way bigger physically the height. Wait Taysom
- 5:34Speaker 2: is Now, I've stood next to Taysom Hill at that
- 5:36Speaker 2: Super Bowl. I'm actually taller than he is. But he's
- 5:42Speaker 2: he's he's built for a size. But call Peyton's big.
- 5:45Speaker 2: So this guy said, look, you have to know what
- 5:49Speaker 2: he is and what he's not. He's not a pure quarterback.
- 5:53Speaker 2: He is you gotta use him like Taysom Hill, wildcat, shotgun,
- 5:58Speaker 2: h back, tight end. Maybe because he's got some size
- 6:03Speaker 2: to him. Maybe put some some size, but he's not
- 6:06Speaker 2: a pure quarterback. Now what what I We'll see how
- 6:09Speaker 2: what the egles say publicly. Sometimes I'm dismissive of this
- 6:12Speaker 2: stuff because they don't want to give it away. Or
- 6:13Speaker 2: they can say, oh, well, yeah, he's a quarterback for us,
- 6:16Speaker 2: but they're not. They may have not talked him about
- 6:18Speaker 2: it yet and they might want to tell the truth.
- 6:20Speaker 3: But I know what he's going to be. You don't
- 6:22Speaker 3: draft this guy based on everything we've heard.
- 6:24Speaker 2: I know you've some interesting information, you have similar stuff,
- 6:27Speaker 2: but it's really interesting you've got You don't just make
- 6:32Speaker 2: this kid a quarterback. This kid is a dull threat athlete.
- 6:36Speaker 2: I Taysom Hill is incredibly explosive and elusive.
- 6:41Speaker 3: And you got to give Sean.
- 6:42Speaker 2: Payton credit by what he created him at this level.
- 6:46Speaker 2: And he was an older quarterback, more mission and so forth.
- 6:49Speaker 2: And but Taysom Mills spent all the injury. He's had
- 6:52Speaker 2: a great career. I don't know if he's gonna play again,
- 6:54Speaker 2: but he's had a great career. But this cold paint
- 6:56Speaker 2: kid is fascinating. But the Eagles, I'll tell you what
- 6:58Speaker 2: Howie is. He sees a different game. He's got the gravitasity,
- 7:04Speaker 2: whatever the hell he wants, and he just sees it differently.
- 7:08Speaker 2: And it's you can find plenty to criticize over his career, right,
- 7:12Speaker 2: But yep, he wasn't fired when he came back in
- 7:15Speaker 2: sixteen at Jeffrey. He didn't reassign him, but he kept him.
- 7:19Speaker 2: It turned out to be one of the best decisions
- 7:21Speaker 2: in the Egles history because despite all the fire Howie stuff,
- 7:24Speaker 2: he learned a lot from his mistakes and we'll see
- 7:27Speaker 2: what happens. But this col Payton wants us another thing
- 7:30Speaker 2: where he sees it differently.
- 7:32Speaker 1: Yeah. So to your point, Col Payton is six foot three,
- 7:35Speaker 1: two hundred and thirty two pounds. I mean that's good
- 7:37Speaker 1: right size for a quarterback. He's left handed. If people
- 7:40Speaker 1: don't know that. Yes, North Dakota State stayed there, you know,
- 7:44Speaker 1: in this era of people leaving only has started one year,
- 7:47Speaker 1: so he's very raw. I reached out in particular, as
- 7:51Speaker 1: soon as they drafted him. I reached out to one
- 7:53Speaker 1: of my guys who he's not an areas guy, he's
- 7:56Speaker 1: a higher ranking scout, but I just had a feeling.
- 7:58Speaker 1: I had a feeling he'd be at that pro day. Uh,
- 8:01Speaker 1: and he happened to be at the pro.
- 8:03Speaker 3: He's an executive. What you're saying, is it, Yeah, he's
- 8:06Speaker 3: a personal executive.
- 8:07Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 8:08Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 8:08Speaker 1: So the first thing I asked was, you know, what
- 8:11Speaker 1: do you think of Cole Payton? And his response was
- 8:14Speaker 1: I'm not sure he's a quarterback, which is not the
- 8:17Speaker 1: greatest thing you ever want to hear when you're asking
- 8:19Speaker 1: about that. But that's that goes back to the argument
- 8:23Speaker 1: and what what we said with Quo Sell basically saying
- 8:26Speaker 1: he's not going to be for everybody's and he's a
- 8:28Speaker 1: lot of development and that's understood. Okay. So I did
- 8:32Speaker 1: ask him if I said, well, you're at the pro day.
- 8:35Speaker 1: I asked him, if you don't see him as a quarterback?
- 8:40Speaker 1: Was he asked at his pro day to do non
- 8:43Speaker 1: quarterback drills? Catch the ball, run with the ball, whatever
- 8:45Speaker 1: you You know, I was literally thinking catch the ball
- 8:47Speaker 1: because in my mind I thought maybe that's tight end size, right,
- 8:51Speaker 1: And apparently he was asked but refused, So teams asked
- 8:57Speaker 1: teams wanted to take a look at him. I'm not saying, listen,
- 9:00Speaker 1: I've always spoked to one person. I'm not saying teams
- 9:02Speaker 1: were judging him as a tight end, but clearly there
- 9:05Speaker 1: was an interest in him doing other drills to see
- 9:09Speaker 1: if the athleticism would translate to other areas or if
- 9:13Speaker 1: he could be a Taysom Hill like type guy. You know,
- 9:15Speaker 1: can he run Kenny Katch? Can he do anything like that?
- 9:19Speaker 1: But he didn't, So I don't know if the Eagles.
- 9:23Speaker 1: The Eagles have plenty of information. They obviously know. You
- 9:26Speaker 1: know that he sees himself as a quarterback and wants
- 9:28Speaker 1: to play quarterback. But it'll be interesting if they also
- 9:31Speaker 1: had a couple of years down the road in mind
- 9:34Speaker 1: if it doesn't work out, if they feel like they
- 9:35Speaker 1: can make him something else, if Cole would be open
- 9:38Speaker 1: to that. I don't know. We're afar from that, but
- 9:40Speaker 1: I just think that it's important for people to know
- 9:41Speaker 1: that he was asked to be evaluated in certain other
- 9:45Speaker 1: drills that are not quarterback drills.
- 9:47Speaker 2: See, it's interesting a lot of these guys get pitching
- 9:50Speaker 2: all these athletic quarterbacks. Okay, he's got it. It's like
- 9:52Speaker 2: when I'm talking to Rich Gannon about this. When he
- 9:56Speaker 2: came into the NFL, I think the Patriots had him
- 10:01Speaker 2: as a wide receiver, Okay, I think they want him
- 10:04Speaker 2: to change positions because he was super athletic. You see
- 10:06Speaker 2: this a lot the guys who would put these massive
- 10:08Speaker 2: numbers up, and rich did not have a break good arm,
- 10:11Speaker 2: let's be honest. Until he got with John Grew and
- 10:14Speaker 2: that changed everything for him because John with the short
- 10:17Speaker 2: air passes and the processing and the quickness and uses
- 10:21Speaker 2: athleticism at the rollout quarterback. But this kid's fascinating man,
- 10:25Speaker 2: because he's a big dude who's a freak athlete. Yeah,
- 10:29Speaker 2: and I'm just interested to see what happens here. And again,
- 10:31Speaker 2: you know, you don't bring this guy in and not
- 10:34Speaker 2: you're gonna of course they have a plan for him. Yeah,
- 10:36Speaker 2: and again, just to reiterate, we'll see what Howie says
- 10:40Speaker 2: and the coaches say in the coming weeks and months.
- 10:43Speaker 2: But I'm telling you he'll never make it unless he
- 10:45Speaker 2: does more of being quarterback. He just he's too gifted
- 10:48Speaker 2: in certain areas as a quarterback. He has deceiving numbers
- 10:53Speaker 2: because if you really look at it, you go, okay,
- 10:55Speaker 2: you know, you said, you know about one year.
- 10:59Speaker 3: But the thing is the run.
- 11:01Speaker 2: The running numbers are phenomenal, though the passive numbers are
- 11:06Speaker 2: not eye popping. You would say, wow, his his accuracy
- 11:09Speaker 2: is not bad, that's not the issue. But if you
- 11:13Speaker 2: watch the tape, as I know for fact, it's not
- 11:16Speaker 2: really that great.
- 11:17Speaker 1: Right, it got high by the way, highly schemed offense.
- 11:20Speaker 2: I schemed right, Another good point. Right, the numbers you're
- 11:24Speaker 2: gonna look at and you go, okay, what's the problem. Well,
- 11:26Speaker 2: these teams still see him as a pure quarterback.
- 11:28Speaker 3: That's the problem.
- 11:29Speaker 1: There you go, and that that's all there is, so
- 11:31Speaker 1: we'll see how his development goes along. Here. The next
- 11:34Speaker 1: pick was the sixth round. This is an interesting pick, Adam,
- 11:38Speaker 1: and this one sort of screams like eagles type of
- 11:41Speaker 1: pick for a couple of reasons. A it's a kid
- 11:43Speaker 1: from Georgia, offensive guard Michael Morris. And B we always
- 11:48Speaker 1: talk about how they will gamble on athletic traits over
- 11:52Speaker 1: tape sometimes in the in the late day, and this
- 11:54Speaker 1: guy is like an athletic freak of nature.
- 11:59Speaker 2: Yeah, the testing numbers are always going to be big.
- 12:02Speaker 2: He's a pure guard. He's got he's a big dude.
- 12:05Speaker 2: Michael Morris is from Georgia.
- 12:07Speaker 3: Yep.
- 12:08Speaker 2: So, And that's what's interesting is you know that's where
- 12:10Speaker 2: they're very light, is developmental guards. Like they have enough
- 12:13Speaker 2: developmental tackles, they don't need anymore. It's they really they're
- 12:17Speaker 2: they're really short at guard. So here you go, six
- 12:20Speaker 2: round pick great size. It didn't work with Jack Driscoll,
- 12:22Speaker 2: who's a excuse mean that chactor of school, the kid
- 12:28Speaker 2: from Michigan who's now with the Cowboys.
- 12:31Speaker 1: Oh Keegan, Trevor Keegan, Trevor Keegan.
- 12:34Speaker 2: Yes, yes, Jack Driscoll sort of made it sort of didn't.
- 12:36Speaker 2: He was on and off the roster, but at least
- 12:38Speaker 2: they got some mile chat at Driscoll. But they really
- 12:40Speaker 2: need that developmental guard and this kid is it.
- 12:43Speaker 1: Yeah. By the way, this guy ran a five at
- 12:47Speaker 1: three hundred and thirty four pounds. That's a one seven split.
- 12:51Speaker 1: I mean that's kind of crazy to me. Oh and
- 12:54Speaker 1: he had a one one hundred and twelve inch I
- 12:57Speaker 1: don't know what that is feet and inches on hundred
- 12:58Speaker 1: and twelve inches because I'm not good at math. But
- 13:01Speaker 1: he had one hundred and twelve inch broad jump.
- 13:04Speaker 3: I mean, come on, I'll let me open my file
- 13:09Speaker 3: see if I have the full work. This is almost as.
- 13:11Speaker 1: Crazy, by the way as Tours with his forty five
- 13:13Speaker 1: and a hal.
- 13:14Speaker 2: Well, that's that's that's like the story sight Michael Morris
- 13:19Speaker 2: at the combine sixty five and a quarter three thirty
- 13:21Speaker 2: four can Hans for a guard, it's fine.
- 13:25Speaker 3: Thirty three to five a's and you like it thirty four.
- 13:27Speaker 2: But he's a guard eight three and a half wing span,
- 13:28Speaker 2: which is very good, big hands, ten and three a's
- 13:32Speaker 2: bench was good at twenty nine. His official forty was
- 13:36Speaker 2: five oh four, which is fantastic at that weight his
- 13:40Speaker 2: ten yards. It was really good at for a guy
- 13:42Speaker 2: that heavy at one seven three Wow, which is very
- 13:45Speaker 2: important for alignment because who the hell cares? Nobody, No
- 13:48Speaker 2: team cares about what a guy's forty is as a
- 13:51Speaker 2: lineman because it doesn't it does, It's irrelevant. But you
- 13:54Speaker 2: want short air quickness, sure, absolutely kicking out. Yeah, it
- 13:58Speaker 2: was really good.
- 13:59Speaker 3: So this kid is is. Yeah, the test numbers are great.
- 14:02Speaker 3: He's a developmental player.
- 14:04Speaker 2: I they have all these developmental projects right now on
- 14:07Speaker 2: the offensive line, and but Chris Cooper's on the clock, folks.
- 14:10Speaker 3: He's start with Cooper absolutely all right.
- 14:14Speaker 1: Then they go to the seventh and they trade, right,
- 14:16Speaker 1: they had that sixth round pick and they trade to
- 14:18Speaker 1: the Rams, who clearly just wanted to be done with
- 14:19Speaker 1: the draft because I'm like three three picks to get
- 14:24Speaker 1: just to be done with it. The first pick in
- 14:27Speaker 1: the seventh round for the Eagles was a safety. We
- 14:29Speaker 1: all figured that they would address that at some point.
- 14:32Speaker 1: From Texas Tech, Cole was new Ski, this guy's a
- 14:35Speaker 1: big guy at safety.
- 14:37Speaker 3: Might play. So yeah, it's he's a long shot to
- 14:42Speaker 3: make it.
- 14:43Speaker 1: Mm hmm.
- 14:44Speaker 3: It's yeah.
- 14:46Speaker 2: They're light at safety the only position left for the
- 14:49Speaker 2: MF need for the season of safety. Really and you know,
- 14:52Speaker 2: as we always say, people games are not played in April,
- 14:54Speaker 2: they're played in September.
- 14:56Speaker 3: Relaxed. They know this.
- 14:57Speaker 2: They've been on the record. How he's on the record.
- 14:59Speaker 2: He that you can't address everything. It's impossible. It's you
- 15:04Speaker 2: just can't, and you should never try to because when
- 15:06Speaker 2: you try to, you force it, and that's when you
- 15:08Speaker 2: make mistakes. There are plenty of veterans safeties out that's
- 15:11Speaker 2: actually the one position post draft that's it's still got
- 15:15Speaker 2: a lot of by five or six guys out there
- 15:17Speaker 2: that it's all leverage. Now clubs have leverage. Is actually
- 15:19Speaker 2: smart the weight yep, they need a starting safety. There's
- 15:22Speaker 2: no question. Now Michael Carter will play into it. We'll
- 15:25Speaker 2: see if was Newski could push for a roster spot.
- 15:28Speaker 2: Now if he'ece of safety got made, My god, he's
- 15:31Speaker 2: got he's huge for safety.
- 15:33Speaker 3: Huge.
- 15:34Speaker 1: It's weird. You wonder how he fits because he's not
- 15:37Speaker 1: You're right, he's not at all. He's not anything like
- 15:40Speaker 1: a normal Vic Fangio safety.
- 15:42Speaker 3: Uh.
- 15:42Speaker 1: But if he's really more of a linebacker, they're pretty
- 15:45Speaker 1: deep there and that would be really difficult for him
- 15:47Speaker 1: to make the team as an off ball linebacker. So
- 15:49Speaker 1: we'll see. He's twenty four years old and his career started,
- 15:53Speaker 1: by the way, at North Dakota State, so I believe
- 15:55Speaker 1: he was a teammate of Cole Payton's. Ironically, so your
- 15:59Speaker 1: new favorite.
- 16:00Speaker 3: Cool.
- 16:02Speaker 1: Yeah, we've finally gotten past the disappointment, Wentz.
- 16:06Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, I know, I know.
- 16:07Speaker 2: It's it's really funny. All of a sudden, someone said
- 16:12Speaker 2: on Twitter to me. We were I was posting something
- 16:16Speaker 2: from one of our shows, and the guy goes, yeah,
- 16:19Speaker 2: why is how are you better drafted?
- 16:20Speaker 3: Because he started drafting from Georgia and Alabaut that makes
- 16:23Speaker 3: him good ignoring it, you know, it's just it's kind
- 16:27Speaker 3: of funny how that things work out. Anyway.
- 16:29Speaker 1: Well, then the next kid, you know, it's not Georgia,
- 16:31Speaker 1: not Alabama, not Texas Tech, not even Prayer Review Nigeria,
- 16:36Speaker 1: and that you are Bernard defensive tackle. When you start
- 16:40Speaker 1: giving out this guy's measurables and athleticism, it almost is
- 16:46Speaker 1: incomprehensible to me, Adam, I mean.
- 16:50Speaker 3: What's funny.
- 16:51Speaker 1: It's good.
- 16:52Speaker 2: You know, the information that's after on him was just
- 16:54Speaker 2: like you said, he's a super freak athlete.
- 16:56Speaker 3: It's actually a personal trainer in his spare time because
- 17:00Speaker 3: he's you know, he's not a football player by trade.
- 17:02Speaker 2: Yeah, some athletic stuff, track, basketball and uh, he's been
- 17:08Speaker 2: part of the Pathways program, the International Pathways Program, and
- 17:12Speaker 2: I know an agent was chasing him because he there's
- 17:14Speaker 2: always a phenomenon. My lot was the phenomenon leaning up
- 17:17Speaker 2: to twenty eighteen draft. What do you get drafted? Who
- 17:19Speaker 2: would draft him? Eagles Stall and they were on it,
- 17:24Speaker 2: you know there they were on this kid, Bernard.
- 17:27Speaker 1: Yeah, it is pronounced by the way. I should want
- 17:29Speaker 1: to let people know it's are okay?
- 17:32Speaker 3: Okay? Do we know his age?
- 17:35Speaker 1: Yes?
- 17:36Speaker 3: We do.
- 17:36Speaker 1: In fact, Andrew Dechecko did a great job of being
- 17:39Speaker 1: on top of this as soon as he had that
- 17:40Speaker 1: pro day the International Pathway Program. And Andrew actually got
- 17:45Speaker 1: in touch with the person who leads that he wrote
- 17:47Speaker 1: a story. It's on uh inside the Birds dot com.
- 17:49Speaker 1: It's actually it was April fifth, so it's been several
- 17:52Speaker 1: weeks old. Oh wow, or our website and check it
- 17:55Speaker 1: out or Google to CHECKO and Bernard and you'll get it.
- 18:00Speaker 3: Mind it. Put it up again.
- 18:01Speaker 1: He's twenty one years old. Uh, twenty one years old?
- 18:06Speaker 3: Yeah good, he's not old, yeah good?
- 18:08Speaker 1: Yeah no, yeah yeah.
- 18:10Speaker 3: For now, he's a defensive tackle. That's the way they're
- 18:12Speaker 3: listing him. Right.
- 18:14Speaker 1: So here's here's the let's give the measureles real quick
- 18:16Speaker 1: six four and a half three hundred and six pounds. Okay,
- 18:20Speaker 1: so that's normal, like three technique type of size. He
- 18:22Speaker 1: has six percent body fat. Pretty yeah, I mean that's ridiculous.
- 18:28Speaker 1: Thirty five and three quarter inch arms for six in
- 18:33Speaker 1: the forty yard dash? Adam at three hundred and six pounds?
- 18:35Speaker 2: Are you giving me at And that's why I said,
- 18:39Speaker 2: let's we'll see if they stick with this for for
- 18:41Speaker 2: the next couple of years, if he's with the football team,
- 18:44Speaker 2: he is, is he still?
- 18:46Speaker 3: Because you want to take advantage of that leticism? You're
- 18:48Speaker 3: not that for six?
- 18:49Speaker 2: Speed to me is incredible out of size, he's a
- 18:53Speaker 2: physical specimen.
- 18:55Speaker 3: I'm interested see what happens here there. This is a guy.
- 18:58Speaker 3: You know, when you go back to twenty eighteen, the
- 19:01Speaker 3: thought was, okay, my lot never played football.
- 19:03Speaker 2: He's a rugby player. You know, how teams hold this currency,
- 19:07Speaker 2: everything matters like these draft picks. You know, they don't
- 19:10Speaker 2: like to give them away. The guy who's a long
- 19:12Speaker 2: shot to make it, but it's a seventh round pack,
- 19:14Speaker 2: who cares?
- 19:15Speaker 1: I know, I know the fact that you could predict
- 19:18Speaker 1: that the Eagles would do it shows you that not
- 19:22Speaker 1: enough teams feel like they it's worth risking a seventh
- 19:25Speaker 1: round pick.
- 19:26Speaker 2: This is the thing that Okay, on what you just said, this,
- 19:29Speaker 2: maybe think of something. Even when Howie was struggling for
- 19:34Speaker 2: the twenty, like sixteen, he did a brilliant job getting
- 19:38Speaker 2: his power back. Just a phenomenal job of somehow convincing
- 19:42Speaker 2: that the Dolphins to take Byron Maxwell moving on.
- 19:45Speaker 3: It just was brilliant.
- 19:46Speaker 2: I mean, he did a great job. And then seventeen
- 19:49Speaker 2: draft not very good. Eighteen great. Of the five he
- 19:50Speaker 2: have there was really good. Included my lot of Joshua
- 19:53Speaker 2: and others. You're nineteen and twenty not bad, Okay, up
- 19:57Speaker 2: and down, but he would everyone in a while get
- 20:00Speaker 2: someone was a little bit different from the norm still,
- 20:04Speaker 2: and then they went back and tried to building the
- 20:06Speaker 2: offensive defensive lines and then taking somehow finding the athleticism numbers,
- 20:15Speaker 2: you know, the data using RAS scores, which I know
- 20:18Speaker 2: a lot of teams don't they think it's overrated. Yeah,
- 20:22Speaker 2: there's some like with kiey Ringo. Obviously that was a
- 20:25Speaker 2: big part of it. And they missed on him because
- 20:28Speaker 2: they missed the stiffness. But that's where football matters. But
- 20:31Speaker 2: how he started to get more and more of this athleticism,
- 20:33Speaker 2: right m combining real world scout and he knows how
- 20:37Speaker 2: he's a film at first, believe or not he is
- 20:40Speaker 2: because he gets knocked for data, for data and contracts.
- 20:43Speaker 3: He's actually a big film that talking people work for him.
- 20:46Speaker 2: And now they're they're combining athletic stuff with coaches who
- 20:51Speaker 2: believe in what they believe.
- 20:52Speaker 3: That's a big thing.
- 20:52Speaker 2: Man. We don't talk about this enough or a lot.
- 20:55Speaker 2: And then you fast forward to now this is why
- 20:58Speaker 2: how he's got the gravitas. Jeffrey will never get on
- 21:01Speaker 2: him for being aggressive. Hell, they could have spent a
- 21:04Speaker 2: sixth round pick at Bernard.
- 21:06Speaker 1: I actually thought they were going to and then they
- 21:08Speaker 1: traded that. Yeah, I got I'll give myself credit in
- 21:12Speaker 1: my Philly Voice Eagles mock draft, I projected this is
- 21:16Speaker 1: the only one I got right. I projected Arbernard to
- 21:20Speaker 1: the Eagles in the sixth round. But I wrote in
- 21:21Speaker 1: my little summary, don't be surprised if they trade this
- 21:24Speaker 1: pick into the seventh round and that's where they take Bernard.
- 21:27Speaker 1: So I nailed it on the head right there.
- 21:30Speaker 3: Wow.
- 21:31Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm gonna I'm gonna put the link to Andrew's
- 21:33Speaker 1: story in the description.
- 21:34Speaker 3: Body.
- 21:36Speaker 1: It's really interesting thing. Andrew rod back. So he lost
- 21:38Speaker 1: his father at a young age, who Warbernard. And he
- 21:41Speaker 1: also comes from a modest income family. So once he
- 21:44Speaker 1: started he literally he played basketball growing up. But once
- 21:48Speaker 1: he was told by some of the people I guess
- 21:50Speaker 1: connected to the International Pathway program that he has the
- 21:54Speaker 1: athleticism and the body type to really potentially excel at
- 21:57Speaker 1: football if he focused on it. He, uh, basically he
- 22:00Speaker 1: did that, and he told the guy who's been helping him,
- 22:03Speaker 1: his name is Javon Gopi, who is an NFL consultant.
- 22:06Speaker 1: He says, I'm not going back to Nigeria.
- 22:08Speaker 3: That was his quote.
- 22:10Speaker 1: This is from Andrew's story. So this guy's got a
- 22:13Speaker 1: you know what you want, a fire burning in him,
- 22:16Speaker 1: a chip on his show. He wants to make this
- 22:18Speaker 1: happen and have a better life for himself. So you
- 22:21Speaker 1: got a really dedicated, devoted guy here. Who has just
- 22:24Speaker 1: great athleticism. It'll be fun to see if this thing
- 22:27Speaker 1: works out.
- 22:29Speaker 3: Yeah, it is, it is.
- 22:30Speaker 2: I remember my first practice in twenty eighteen rookie camp.
- 22:37Speaker 2: He literally had no idea what he was doing. And
- 22:40Speaker 2: he you know, you're not allowed to push anyone. It
- 22:44Speaker 2: was like Domino's. He he went like this and he stopped.
- 22:46Speaker 2: They stout yellity's what are you doing? And he looked around.
- 22:50Speaker 3: And but when you see the massive because remember they're
- 22:54Speaker 3: not wearing pats as you know football players, if you
- 22:58Speaker 3: go to training camp or ot is or anything, the
- 23:00Speaker 3: players look so much smaller out stuff on.
- 23:03Speaker 2: He didn't look small. He then he might have been
- 23:05Speaker 2: four hundred pounds, right, His biggest way to think was
- 23:08Speaker 2: four two if I remember correctly. But he was massive
- 23:11Speaker 2: human being. But you would see him then, you'd see
- 23:15Speaker 2: him in the mandatory camp start, you know, start chunks
- 23:18Speaker 2: of athleticism.
- 23:20Speaker 1: Mhm.
- 23:20Speaker 2: It was like, oh boy, okay, we'll see. We're not
- 23:22Speaker 2: saying he's ever gonna make it, but this is interesting.
- 23:24Speaker 2: So fast forward to this kid, athletic testing numbers, size,
- 23:31Speaker 2: motivation for better life. Eagles love these type type stories. Development.
- 23:37Speaker 2: You know, he's almost certain he've drafted, you know, so
- 23:42Speaker 2: they they feel like he's got some sort of future.
- 23:44Speaker 2: You don't draft someone who don't you don't think that's
- 23:46Speaker 2: something that could lead to something.
- 23:48Speaker 3: So I'm this is gonna be a fun one.
- 23:50Speaker 2: We're gonna get We're gonna get to see what he
- 23:52Speaker 2: knows or doesn't know about football when OTAs.
- 23:55Speaker 1: Right right, Hey, Philly fans game day is stressful enough
- 24:00Speaker 1: working traffic, long lines, We've all been there, But when
- 24:03Speaker 1: it comes to your cannabis, Camden Apothecary makes it easy.
- 24:08Speaker 1: This is the dispensary for sports fans, just minutes outside
- 24:12Speaker 1: of Philly, with plenty of free parking. You'll be in
- 24:14Speaker 1: and out fast, no hassle, no waiting, and they don't
- 24:18Speaker 1: just care about convenience. Camedn Apothecary is all about the
- 24:22Speaker 1: guest experience. Their staff makes sure you feel taken care
- 24:26Speaker 1: of every time you walk in. Plus, they carry only
- 24:29Speaker 1: the best quality cannabis at the fairest prices, so whether
- 24:33Speaker 1: you're stocking up for the tailgate, the watch party, or
- 24:36Speaker 1: celebrating a big win, you know you're getting the good
- 24:39Speaker 1: stuff without overpaying. They even show love to the community
- 24:44Speaker 1: with specials for fans, students, service members, and healthcare pros.
- 24:49Speaker 1: Camedn Apothecary, top quality cannabis, great prices, and an experience
- 24:53Speaker 1: made for Philly fans twenty one and up. All Right,
- 24:57Speaker 1: So the last pick that the Eagles make is an
- 24:59Speaker 1: under This is sort of another vintage Eagles pick on
- 25:02Speaker 1: edge guy undersized. I'm talking about Keyshawn James and ubi
- 25:08Speaker 1: uh six two thirty eight, but very He's explosive. He
- 25:12Speaker 1: ran a four or five at New Mexico's pro day.
- 25:15Speaker 1: Very productive in college thirty three and a half sacks.
- 25:18Speaker 1: So you know that's what you do. You look for athleticism,
- 25:21Speaker 1: you look for production. You remember the last they're known
- 25:24Speaker 1: for this like Antoine Powell Ryland did not work out,
- 25:27Speaker 1: but it was very productive. I think it was Virginia
- 25:30Speaker 1: Tech that he played at. He was a really pretty
- 25:32Speaker 1: had like thirty career sacks in college.
- 25:34Speaker 3: And finals were huge. Yeah.
- 25:37Speaker 1: Patrick Johnson was another guy who was very productive. And
- 25:40Speaker 1: so you know, you add another guy to the fold here.
- 25:43Speaker 1: I think I think you started off at Montana Tech
- 25:46Speaker 1: uh and then went to the New Mexico. Yeah, I know, right,
- 25:51Speaker 1: I don't know that one. Well, we have to go
- 25:53Speaker 1: ask Greig. Hey, Greg, when you were watching his tape
- 25:55Speaker 1: at Montana Tech, what did you say?
- 25:58Speaker 2: Well, No, it's funny because I I think when Greg,
- 26:00Speaker 2: when we got him on Jay Look's sign. Uh for
- 26:04Speaker 2: some reason, the school changed their name it is Houston Christian.
- 26:09Speaker 1: Yeah. I went from Houston Baptist to Houston Christian.
- 26:11Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 26:12Speaker 2: And I think what happened is he might have been
- 26:13Speaker 2: looking up Houston Baptist, right that was you know, we
- 26:17Speaker 2: it's just it's just fun. I've learned through this businessman.
- 26:20Speaker 2: You never you never know with a late round pick.
- 26:23Speaker 2: Now now for this kid and where I'm going here
- 26:25Speaker 2: is it's going to be I don't see impossible. It's
- 26:27Speaker 2: extremely difficult because now you're have you had Jonathan Gernard.
- 26:31Speaker 2: Remember the Eagles had a very aggressive depth signing off
- 26:35Speaker 2: season or addition season. Okay, so they didn't really have
- 26:39Speaker 2: a room for sixth guy to make it. So you
- 26:42Speaker 2: know it's gonna be very very tough. We mentioned Jose
- 26:45Speaker 2: Ramirez is brought inka have a Cattie, but remember ard
- 26:50Speaker 2: into trade.
- 26:51Speaker 1: Remember you need to have your last edge who's going
- 26:55Speaker 1: to play on special teams, and that's been Patrick Johnson
- 26:58Speaker 1: for them. So I mean, there's always shot, right, this
- 27:01Speaker 1: guy makes it not as necessarily a edge rusher, but.
- 27:03Speaker 2: He's got to be on or he don't have to
- 27:05Speaker 2: be good. He has to be elite where he's not
- 27:08Speaker 2: making it because there's no room for him on edge.
- 27:10Speaker 2: There's just not any room for him.
- 27:12Speaker 3: Right, So yeah, he would, And that goes by the way,
- 27:15Speaker 3: what you said, that goes for any position. Yep.
- 27:17Speaker 2: If if it's too big, if you're if it's a
- 27:20Speaker 2: long shot to make it as a position player, it
- 27:23Speaker 2: no longer. It doesn't really matter what position you play.
- 27:25Speaker 2: If you're a leite on specials mm hmm.
- 27:29Speaker 3: Number one.
- 27:30Speaker 2: That gives ties to the runner where they'll keep you
- 27:31Speaker 2: on the roster and not really count you at that position.
- 27:33Speaker 3: It's like this guy's elite.
- 27:35Speaker 2: It's like Ringo doesn't even count as the corner anymore
- 27:37Speaker 2: because they won't play on defense.
- 27:38Speaker 3: He's just elite at what he does.
- 27:41Speaker 2: Run down straight a straight line, great straight line speed,
- 27:44Speaker 2: and they figured out a way to get something out
- 27:45Speaker 2: of him.
- 27:46Speaker 3: But yeah, he's he's it's a major long shot.
- 27:49Speaker 2: You know, it's goes and they never say never bucket
- 27:51Speaker 2: which we've used for nine years, but it would be
- 27:54Speaker 2: next to impossible for make it, but like great on
- 27:56Speaker 2: specials and at least thee goes from zero to like
- 27:59Speaker 2: maybe twenty.
- 28:00Speaker 3: So we'll see what happens.
- 28:01Speaker 2: But yeah, they this is a big developmental off season
- 28:05Speaker 2: for the Eagles and there and they're new coaches on
- 28:08Speaker 2: offense with the trades the draft, A J.
- 28:14Speaker 3: Brown is up and trade yet look for that to
- 28:15Speaker 3: happen on June second.
- 28:18Speaker 2: Uh, the new offensive lineman stours getting him in the
- 28:22Speaker 2: weight room, beefing up and then working on technique. And
- 28:26Speaker 2: they you know, some people think, well, if you put
- 28:29Speaker 2: them on the field, they're gonna only throw the football.
- 28:30Speaker 3: No, that's not gonna work that way.
- 28:33Speaker 2: Yes, they know it looks like a tell that's why
- 28:35Speaker 2: I use him as an offset full back. We're tight
- 28:37Speaker 2: end the f position, which is the offset behind. You'll
- 28:41Speaker 2: see him, Uh, zach Ertz has done it. Tyler Higbe
- 28:47Speaker 2: who's there why you'll see him also play the f
- 28:50Speaker 2: okay which is the west coast offant. You'll see him
- 28:52Speaker 2: crouched down. And those are by the way, when they
- 28:54Speaker 2: were throwing tunnel screens for the high screen. He's which
- 28:57Speaker 2: he's brilliant at. They know this and what you do
- 29:01Speaker 2: is and that's what Kyle Shanahan does a great job of.
- 29:04Speaker 2: Is who is the tight end that came out of
- 29:07Speaker 2: the blue, oh with a funny last name.
- 29:10Speaker 1: Tugus Tungus Yeah yeah.
- 29:13Speaker 3: Chake Thomas, Yes, that tongus. Yeah, I called them tongues.
- 29:17Speaker 3: I didn't know.
- 29:19Speaker 1: It might Yeah, no, it is.
- 29:22Speaker 3: He.
- 29:22Speaker 2: They use them a specific way to make sure he
- 29:25Speaker 2: doesn't take blocks head of That's called coaching.
- 29:29Speaker 3: So just relax.
- 29:30Speaker 2: These coaches know he that Stowers needs to learn how
- 29:33Speaker 2: to block. They know that doesn't mean you can't use them.
- 29:35Speaker 2: You just you you try not to expose them. Last year,
- 29:38Speaker 2: the coaching, I would say the offensive coaching. Last year
- 29:41Speaker 2: it wasn't twenty three like on offensive defense, but one
- 29:45Speaker 2: too far away.
- 29:46Speaker 3: I don't think they had a good year. I know
- 29:48Speaker 3: they didn't have a good year.
- 29:50Speaker 2: Uh. And it's got to be better and putting players
- 29:52Speaker 2: in a better position to succeed for them and the club.
- 29:56Speaker 3: That's got to.
- 29:56Speaker 1: Happen, absolutely all right, Before we get out of here,
- 29:59Speaker 1: one last point, Tanner McKee still an eagle to not
- 30:02Speaker 1: get traded. You have we've had good intel. You've had
- 30:05Speaker 1: good intel. We report on our Pod that they're not
- 30:07Speaker 1: like trying to trade I really don't want to move him, right,
- 30:10Speaker 1: But now with Cole Payton, they have four quarterbacks, so
- 30:15Speaker 1: they're either going to have to go heavy there if
- 30:17Speaker 1: they if they want to keep all four because as
- 30:19Speaker 1: a fifth round pick, I don't think they're gonna get
- 30:22Speaker 1: you know, Colpayton's gonna make the team as a fifth
- 30:24Speaker 1: round pick. I think he's much more of a of
- 30:27Speaker 1: a long no, I'm sorry, much more of an automatic
- 30:29Speaker 1: to make it than say Kyle McCord, who was a
- 30:31Speaker 1: sixth round pick and who just didn't translate right.
- 30:34Speaker 3: I mean.
- 30:36Speaker 2: He played himself off right and with a pocket quarterback
- 30:40Speaker 2: like there's no the ceiling wasn't higher.
- 30:43Speaker 1: He is what he is. Like with Cole Payton, here
- 30:46Speaker 1: you see two or three years down the road of
- 30:49Speaker 1: great development because athleticism. That's not the case with McCord.
- 30:52Speaker 1: You weren't going to make him ten times better than
- 30:54Speaker 1: he already is. He's a passing a pocket quarterback. So
- 30:58Speaker 1: the point is we'll see what happens. Obviously, a team
- 31:02Speaker 1: coming out of the draft could want, you know, maybe
- 31:04Speaker 1: like the Cardinals, right, didn't get a big time quarterback
- 31:06Speaker 1: or anything. Maybe they'll be looking. You know, there might
- 31:09Speaker 1: be some teams, there might be some injuries at the position,
- 31:11Speaker 1: so just.
- 31:12Speaker 2: Well you wait, yeah, I mean, honestly, Andy Dalton's here
- 31:14Speaker 2: for a reason. You're the the the Panthers and Eagles
- 31:17Speaker 2: are splitting up the salary. Yep, they're both us are
- 31:20Speaker 2: paying a little bit of it, as I understand it.
- 31:21Speaker 2: But he's here for a reason. How he's always liked it,
- 31:24Speaker 2: which we outlined. They almost sign him, in fact, he
- 31:26Speaker 2: was They were actually going to sign him four years ago,
- 31:29Speaker 2: went up being Mariota because Andy decided to go to
- 31:33Speaker 2: Charlotte with the Panthers and they need a backup plan
- 31:35Speaker 2: and he was a backup player. So and so Dalton's here,
- 31:39Speaker 2: uh called Payton will count as a quarterback. He definitely
- 31:42Speaker 2: woke out as a quarterback.
- 31:43Speaker 3: Yep.
- 31:43Speaker 2: And there's an interesting player. But you know, if you
- 31:46Speaker 2: go heavy somewhere else, you gotta go light somewhere else.
- 31:51Speaker 2: That's the challenge of it. And they have so many
- 31:54Speaker 2: damn receivers right now, and and you're the focus of
- 31:58Speaker 2: our cup coming show that shows the next couple weeks
- 32:00Speaker 2: is we're gonna break down every position what it looks
- 32:02Speaker 2: like what we're hearing there. They're trying to accomplish. We're
- 32:06Speaker 2: gonna get more into the coaching, by the way, because
- 32:08Speaker 2: we have people each ouse. Hey, you guys didn't want
- 32:09Speaker 2: talk about your coach about the coaching, and they also
- 32:11Speaker 2: you're correct. This is when we do it because we
- 32:14Speaker 2: have more time now we're pressed for all draft stuff.
- 32:18Speaker 2: Once the second week of fragily hits, we're done with
- 32:20Speaker 2: frage that we move on.
- 32:21Speaker 1: Yep.
- 32:22Speaker 2: Uh you know when then we stop when they sign
- 32:24Speaker 2: someone or trade for someone. But we go heavy into
- 32:28Speaker 2: now it's roster building time. You know, there's so much
- 32:31Speaker 2: to cover, and it's a great time now because there's
- 32:33Speaker 2: not much going on and we get to catch up
- 32:35Speaker 2: the stuff people want to hear about.
- 32:36Speaker 3: So we're gonna do it.
- 32:37Speaker 1: That's true. I know we promise Andrew to check O.
- 32:40Speaker 1: So what's gonna happen is he'll do it to Checko
- 32:42Speaker 1: daily with his thoughts on the day three guys, and
- 32:45Speaker 1: then we will have we'll do a bigger, broader kind
- 32:47Speaker 1: of roundtable wrap up on the draft with the check
- 32:50Speaker 1: over this week, and then I believe we're also going
- 32:52Speaker 1: to have Greg cosel On to give us his tape rate.
- 32:55Speaker 1: Oh yeah, tell you on all these guys the Eagles picked,
- 32:58Speaker 1: So that will do for this episode. This special NFL
- 33:02Speaker 1: Draft over episode of Inside the Birds, the leading podcast
