Transcript
- 0:04Speaker 1: Hello, friends from across the nation and around the world.
- 0:08Speaker 1: I'm Martin, and you are listening to Dad's bedtime stories.
- 0:12Speaker 1: Tonight we're gonna be hopping back into the spaceship universe
- 0:16Speaker 1: for this suggestion or these suggestions, I should say.
- 0:23Speaker 2: Hi, I'm Martin.
- 0:24Speaker 3: It's Rowan from race Bridge. I want to do a
- 0:29Speaker 3: music planet where people are music notes and their Rex
- 0:36Speaker 3: comes to steal their music.
- 0:41Speaker 4: And when.
- 0:43Speaker 3: Rex comes, he brings like this tiny or actually big,
- 0:50Speaker 3: like big vacuum that secks up music. And thanks, I
- 0:57Speaker 3: love your podcast.
- 0:58Speaker 2: Bye.
- 1:00Speaker 1: Awesome suggestion, Rowan, it looks like we might have one
- 1:04Speaker 1: from your brother here too.
- 1:07Speaker 5: I'm Josh from Bracebridge, and I'm gonna have a suggestion
- 1:12Speaker 5: for a music planet where they sing everything that and
- 1:17Speaker 5: then it comes to life, and that.
- 1:23Speaker 6: There's a toinail and if any swing and if they
- 1:29Speaker 6: get struck in the tornado, that that makes them can't sing,
- 1:34Speaker 6: so they have to get in their houses and it
- 1:38Speaker 6: steals their beat.
- 1:41Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 1:42Speaker 1: I love your podcast. By all right, well, thank you
- 1:47Speaker 1: to Rowan and Jacks for those suggestions. I will say,
- 1:50Speaker 1: in combining all those things together and making it one
- 1:53Speaker 1: cohesive planet, I might have to change a few details,
- 1:56Speaker 1: but I hope you like what ends up there. As
- 2:00Speaker 1: far as announcements go, I just want to remind everyone
- 2:02Speaker 1: that we do have a March contest on to share
- 2:06Speaker 1: the podcast on kind of any kind of social media
- 2:10Speaker 1: and be entered in a draw for a guaranteed story idea.
- 2:14Speaker 1: Now there's pretty much no wrong way you can do it.
- 2:17Speaker 1: If you share the podcast in any way that works
- 2:19Speaker 1: for you with other people, you can fill out my
- 2:23Speaker 1: Google form letting me know how you shared it, and
- 2:26Speaker 1: I will put you in the draw. The winner gets
- 2:29Speaker 1: a guaranteed story idea and the option of a little
- 2:34Speaker 1: interview at the beginning of it to tell us all
- 2:36Speaker 1: about your idea. I ran this last year at about
- 2:40Speaker 1: the same time for a few months straight, and I
- 2:42Speaker 1: believe I even interviewed Rowan and Jacks, the people who
- 2:46Speaker 1: suggested this episode, because they do a pretty awesome job
- 2:51Speaker 1: of sharing the podcast with everyone they can in and
- 2:55Speaker 1: around Bracebridge. But now it's that I'm again just in
- 3:01Speaker 1: case we have a commercial break, I'll put it right
- 3:04Speaker 1: here perfect Now, close your eyes, get as comfy as
- 3:11Speaker 1: you can in that bed, and imagine yourself doing what
- 3:15Speaker 1: the kid in the story does. Imagine yourself waking up
- 3:22Speaker 1: on spaceship. Good morning, Spaceship says, You sit up, finding
- 3:29Speaker 1: yourself on the couch of the ship. Oh good boy,
- 3:34Speaker 1: it ag spaceship. You answer, I believe I have discovered
- 3:40Speaker 1: a very interesting planet. Oh cool, I could go for
- 3:45Speaker 1: a little adventure. What did you find? You ask, I
- 3:50Speaker 1: believe it is a music planet, a planet largely made
- 3:56Speaker 1: up of musical notes that have been put together, almost
- 4:01Speaker 1: like programmable matter. Uh cool, I mean, I don't even
- 4:07Speaker 1: really know what that means, but it sounds like a
- 4:09Speaker 1: fun thing to check out, you answer. Setting course, Spaceship says.
- 4:16Speaker 1: The ship turns just a little bit downward, and you
- 4:20Speaker 1: continue at super hyper drive until suddenly stopping high above
- 4:27Speaker 1: an absolutely beautiful planet. At first, it looks like a
- 4:31Speaker 1: pearl hanging in space, shining with soft colors like pink
- 4:37Speaker 1: and gold and turquoise and violet. But as you get closer,
- 4:42Speaker 1: you notice that the colors seemed to ripple. The whole
- 4:47Speaker 1: planet glows in little pulses, as if light itself is
- 4:52Speaker 1: breathing in and out to a beat, like the beat
- 4:57Speaker 1: of a song. And then, even up in the vacuum
- 5:02Speaker 1: of space, you hear it music. It drifts through Spaceship's
- 5:09Speaker 1: sensors and speakers, not one song exactly, but hundreds of
- 5:16Speaker 1: tiny little melodies weaving through the ship. Some are bright
- 5:21Speaker 1: and bouncy, some are slow and dreamy, Some sound like humming,
- 5:28Speaker 1: and some sound sort of like laughter. Oh you whisper.
- 5:34Speaker 1: The closer you get, the more beautiful the planet becomes.
- 5:39Speaker 1: The clouds below are shaped in long, curling swirls, almost
- 5:45Speaker 1: like treble clefts. Gray shining rivers curve over the land,
- 5:50Speaker 1: and loops and arcs like silver ribbons on a page
- 5:54Speaker 1: of music. Forests grow in bands of color and hearing.
- 6:00Speaker 1: You see little towns with towers and rooftops rising, and
- 6:05Speaker 1: all sorts of different shapes. Prepare to land. Spaceship says,
- 6:12Speaker 1: his engines soften, and he glides down towards the ground.
- 6:18Speaker 1: Light dances over the window. Tiny bursts of color flicker
- 6:22Speaker 1: around the ship like fireflies. When the ship lands, the
- 6:28Speaker 1: ramp lowers with a little hiss. Immediately, warm air flows inside.
- 6:35Speaker 1: It smells kind of like flowers and fresh bread and
- 6:40Speaker 1: rain on top of stone, if that makes any sense.
- 6:45Speaker 1: And there's something else in the air too, something impossible.
- 6:49Speaker 1: It smells the way singing might smell, if singing had
- 6:54Speaker 1: a smell, bright and clean and happy. You step down
- 7:00Speaker 1: on the ground. The grass beneath your feet is soft
- 7:04Speaker 1: and springy, and every step makes the faintest musical note,
- 7:09Speaker 1: a little dough, a little ray, tiny shimmering me. You
- 7:16Speaker 1: try another step, and this time it gives you another note.
- 7:20Speaker 1: Soon you're carefully walking in a small circle, just to
- 7:24Speaker 1: hear the tune the ground makes under you. Remarkable Spaceship says,
- 7:31Speaker 1: the surface appears to be mildly responsive to rhythm. You
- 7:36Speaker 1: look over to the town nearby. It's one of the
- 7:39Speaker 1: prettiest places you've ever seen. Small houses curve and spiral,
- 7:44Speaker 1: as if they were shaped by wind and song instead
- 7:47Speaker 1: of bricks and wood. Shop roofs hark up like wings.
- 7:53Speaker 1: Statues stand in the middle of little squares, some shaped
- 7:57Speaker 1: like giant harps, some like singing birds, some like people,
- 8:03Speaker 1: with open mouths and streams of carved notes floating around them.
- 8:08Speaker 1: Colorful banners hanging between buildings, shifting gently in the breeze.
- 8:14Speaker 1: Little fountains rise and fall, and really cool patterns, each
- 8:19Speaker 1: splash sounding almost like a song of its own, and
- 8:24Speaker 1: moving through the streets. Are people or well. At first
- 8:29Speaker 1: you think they're tiny, floating symbols made of light, but
- 8:32Speaker 1: then one comes closer and you realize it's a living
- 8:37Speaker 1: music note. It's small and glossy and black, like a
- 8:43Speaker 1: note written on paper, but it shines at the edges
- 8:47Speaker 1: with sort of rainbow colors. It has bright eyes, tiny
- 8:52Speaker 1: little arms, and little feet. The tap in time as
- 8:56Speaker 1: it walks and makes the same notes your feet did
- 9:00Speaker 1: as you walked. It bobs slightly with each step, as
- 9:05Speaker 1: if even walking for it is kind of like dancing.
- 9:09Speaker 1: The little music note stops in front of you and
- 9:12Speaker 1: gives a cheerful bow. Hello, it says, or sort of sings.
- 9:19Speaker 1: Its voice is clear and sweet, and as it sings
- 9:23Speaker 1: or speaks, two tiny golden notes float out of its
- 9:28Speaker 1: mouth and drift upward before dissolving into sparks. You blink
- 9:34Speaker 1: in surprise.
- 9:36Speaker 4: Welcome to the music planet, Hello, you say, ah, happy
- 9:44Speaker 4: to be here. I am called Quaver, says the note proudly,
- 9:52Speaker 4: and I am on welcoming dooty today, which is a
- 9:57Speaker 4: very important dooty because it involves smiling, bowing, and showing
- 10:05Speaker 4: people around. That does sound important, It is extremely important,
- 10:14Speaker 4: says Quaver. Visitors become cranky if you don't know how
- 10:19Speaker 4: to show.
- 10:20Speaker 1: Them to the snack stand. H I guess that's accurate,
- 10:25Speaker 1: you respond. Quaver floats up a little higher, circling in
- 10:30Speaker 1: front of you. Would you like a tour? I can
- 10:34Speaker 1: show you the singing gardens, the melody market, the chorus square,
- 10:41Speaker 1: the instrument fountains, and the house making circle. We are
- 10:49Speaker 1: very proud of the house making circle. You nod right away. Uh, yes, please,
- 10:57Speaker 1: you say. Quaver turns and begins skipping down the path
- 11:01Speaker 1: you follow through the town, while spaceship shrinks behind you
- 11:06Speaker 1: and sort of floats behind as you walk. You notice
- 11:11Speaker 1: something extraordinary. Nothing here seems still at all. The houses
- 11:17Speaker 1: don't wobble exactly, but they seem to hold a little
- 11:21Speaker 1: hum inside them. Decorations hanging from windows chime and the breeze.
- 11:28Speaker 1: The statues themselves seem to sort of resonate with music
- 11:33Speaker 1: of their own. Even the food displayed in little stands
- 11:37Speaker 1: as a sort of musical quality, as if it's made
- 11:41Speaker 1: up of vibrations of sound. It all looks alive, you say,
- 11:48Speaker 1: Quaver glances back at you with a smile. That's because
- 11:53Speaker 1: it is all made from song, all of it. You
- 11:58Speaker 1: ask all of it, Quaver responds. He leads you through
- 12:04Speaker 1: the wide open square in the center of town. In
- 12:07Speaker 1: the middle is a circular stage made of smooth, pale stone.
- 12:12Speaker 1: Around it stands several music notes, with people of all
- 12:16Speaker 1: different shapes. Some are round and bold, others are long
- 12:21Speaker 1: and elegant. Some are brightly colored. Some sparkle a gink
- 12:27Speaker 1: around the stage. A crowd is gathered. Ah, what happens here?
- 12:33Speaker 1: You ask? Here, the little note says, is where we
- 12:38Speaker 1: sing things into existence? You stare at the stage. You
- 12:44Speaker 1: mean you really like literally sing things into existence? Of course,
- 12:50Speaker 1: how else would you make a house? You open your
- 12:55Speaker 1: mouth and then close it again. Spaceship answers for you.
- 13:00Speaker 1: On most planets there is usually a somewhat more annoying
- 13:04Speaker 1: construction process. He explains, how dreadful. Quaver answers. A few
- 13:12Speaker 1: more note people float onto the stage. They arrange themselves
- 13:17Speaker 1: in a little semi circle. Quaver lowers its voice to
- 13:20Speaker 1: a whisper. Watch carefully, this one is one of our
- 13:26Speaker 1: best building songs. The notes on the stage take a
- 13:31Speaker 1: breath together, and then they begin. They weave together a
- 13:38Speaker 1: beautiful melody, And as they sing, little musical notes rise
- 13:44Speaker 1: out of their mouth and begin to spin around them.
- 13:48Speaker 1: You stand completely still, just watching as the notes float
- 13:53Speaker 1: and gather and connect and then build themselves. A glowing
- 13:59Speaker 1: outline appears in the air, floors, walls, windows, then a
- 14:06Speaker 1: curved roof with little decorative swirls. The shining notes knit
- 14:11Speaker 1: themselves together with beams and edges and doors and shutters,
- 14:16Speaker 1: until in front of your eyes, right there on the square,
- 14:20Speaker 1: a beautiful little house forms out of pure music. The
- 14:27Speaker 1: sound ends, The last node hangs in the air for
- 14:31Speaker 1: a moment like a star. Then there's silence. The house
- 14:37Speaker 1: stands complete. Quaver turns to you, glowing with pride. See it,
- 14:44Speaker 1: says that's amazing. You respond, yes, Spaceship adds, I am
- 14:51Speaker 1: also impressed. You walk up to the building and place
- 14:55Speaker 1: a hand on the wall. It feels warm and as
- 14:59Speaker 1: if it's humming gently. And then, somewhere far away, just
- 15:04Speaker 1: at the edges of your hearing, you hear a different
- 15:08Speaker 1: sound that Spaceship says does not sound like local music.
- 15:18Speaker 1: Quavers smile, falters, and above the town a shadow begins
- 15:24Speaker 1: to pass by. You look up, and at first all
- 15:28Speaker 1: you can see is a dark shape sliding across the
- 15:31Speaker 1: glowing sky. But then the shape lowers and your eyes widen.
- 15:38Speaker 1: It's a spaceship, but not just any spaceship. It's shaped
- 15:43Speaker 1: like a giant t rex head, unmistakably one of Rex's
- 15:50Speaker 1: or Rex's clones. The ship hovers over the square with
- 15:56Speaker 1: a great mechanical growl. When whips through the town, banners flap,
- 16:03Speaker 1: the little musical notes below begin to huddle together, their
- 16:07Speaker 1: bright edges trembling. Then a hatch opens in the ship's belly,
- 16:12Speaker 1: and a metal platform lowers down standing on it, wearing
- 16:16Speaker 1: his normal white lab coat fluttering in the wind. Is
- 16:21Speaker 1: a Rex clone. For those of you who might not know,
- 16:25Speaker 1: Rex is an evolved t Rex scientist, and he looks
- 16:30Speaker 1: as annoying and dramatic as ever. Right here, citizens of
- 16:36Speaker 1: Music Planet, he booms, Rejoice, your civilization is about to
- 16:43Speaker 1: become useful. Nobody rejoices. Waver hides partly behind your leg
- 16:52Speaker 1: I do not like him. That's because your edit sincs
- 16:56Speaker 1: are excellent, you say. The Rex paces across the platform
- 17:02Speaker 1: as though he's giving a lecture to a room of
- 17:04Speaker 1: adoring people for years. He announces, I have searched for
- 17:10Speaker 1: a better building material for my ship. Metal is heavy,
- 17:15Speaker 1: crystal is fragile, self folding nanofoam is expensive, and it
- 17:20Speaker 1: gets stuck in events. But now I have discovered your
- 17:25Speaker 1: marvelous musical matter. He points directly at the buildings of
- 17:31Speaker 1: the village. Programmable, responsive, reformable, structurally elegant matter. You sing
- 17:41Speaker 1: it one way, it becomes a house. You sing it
- 17:45Speaker 1: another way, it becomes a bridge, or a wing, or
- 17:50Speaker 1: a laboratory, or perhaps a Nacho dispenser or something. He pauses,
- 17:57Speaker 1: mostly the laboratory, though for my cases. Quaver peeks out
- 18:03Speaker 1: from behind you. We are not programmable matter. We are people.
- 18:12Speaker 1: The Rex clone squints down at Quaver. Yes, yes, obviously
- 18:17Speaker 1: people ish anyways, very charming, also unbelievably useful. You step forward,
- 18:26Speaker 1: activating your watch, allowing your space suit armor to fold
- 18:30Speaker 1: around your body. Leave them alone, you say, O, it's you.
- 18:38Speaker 1: I thought you might be here, and spaceship do ah well.
- 18:47Speaker 1: Rex pulls a lever beside him. Immediately, the belly of
- 18:51Speaker 1: the t Rex ship opens wider, and a massive tube
- 18:55Speaker 1: drops down from underneath it. The tube glows with pulsing
- 19:00Speaker 1: red light and begins to whine louder and louder. What's
- 19:06Speaker 1: that you ask. It appears to be a gigantic vacuum device.
- 19:12Speaker 1: Spaceship answers, the rex Clone laughs. Not just a vacuum device,
- 19:19Speaker 1: a resonant extraction engine. It identifies the musical structures of
- 19:24Speaker 1: your town and pulls them apart at the very note level.
- 19:30Speaker 1: Quaver gasps, and the other music people begin to cry
- 19:34Speaker 1: out and frighten little melodies that still sound absolutely beautiful. Somehow,
- 19:41Speaker 1: no Quaver shouts, but the engine is already starting. A
- 19:47Speaker 1: swirling force tears through the square. You watch in horrors.
- 19:52Speaker 1: The beautiful new house on stage begins to shimmer, Its
- 19:56Speaker 1: walls tremble. Then cloning notes start to peel out of it,
- 20:01Speaker 1: one by one, then in streams, and then in a
- 20:05Speaker 1: rushing cloud. They rip through the air and vanish into
- 20:09Speaker 1: the clones vacuum machine thingy. The house caves in and disappears.
- 20:17Speaker 1: The whole crowd cries out. Then the extraction beam swings
- 20:23Speaker 1: across the town, absorbing a statue that looks like a harp.
- 20:28Speaker 1: A food stand loses its shining trays, its shelves, it's
- 20:32Speaker 1: striped roof, and even its little sign. Across the street,
- 20:37Speaker 1: a whole shop folds in on itself as the notes
- 20:40Speaker 1: are torn free from the walls. Oh no, he's taking everything,
- 20:45Speaker 1: you yell, yes, Spaceship says, that seems to be his
- 20:51Speaker 1: very rude plan. All around you, the town begins to
- 20:55Speaker 1: become well undone. The carved arch over the square disintegrates,
- 21:01Speaker 1: The fountain loses its graceful stone and becomes a swirl
- 21:05Speaker 1: of notes. Platters of glowing food vanish right out of
- 21:09Speaker 1: people's hands, tables, doors, lamps, benches, flower boxes, roof tiles,
- 21:15Speaker 1: market stalls, statues, signs. Everything that's ever been made of
- 21:19Speaker 1: song rips apart and is sucked in to Rex's ship.
- 21:26Speaker 1: The air that had been so full of beauty is
- 21:29Speaker 1: now just full of frightened sounds from the little note people.
- 21:34Speaker 1: Our homes, quavers says, our market, our gardens. You look around,
- 21:43Speaker 1: A little note family stands where their house once was,
- 21:47Speaker 1: staring at the empty space. A cluster of little note
- 21:50Speaker 1: children try to gather up floating scraps of melody, as
- 21:55Speaker 1: if they could somehow push them back together. Even the
- 21:58Speaker 1: snacks stand as on. The people look absolutely devastated, and
- 22:05Speaker 1: then Rex's ship begins to change, as if the outsides
- 22:11Speaker 1: are sort of reforming themselves. New fins unfold. A turret
- 22:17Speaker 1: rises from the back. Decorative ridges form along the neck.
- 22:21Speaker 1: A set of extra engines bloom near the tail. He
- 22:25Speaker 1: cackles in delight. Look at that. It works even better
- 22:30Speaker 1: than I imagined. A responsive instant ship upgrades. Soon, my
- 22:37Speaker 1: entire vessel will be made out of adaptive musical matter.
- 22:43Speaker 1: He leans over the railing and points a tiny clad you,
- 22:47Speaker 1: and there's nothing you can do about it. Stop, you yell,
- 22:55Speaker 1: but Rex's clones ship starts moving fast away. You race
- 23:02Speaker 1: through the streets that are becoming emptier by the second.
- 23:05Speaker 1: A row of decorative towers is stripped bare before your eyes.
- 23:10Speaker 1: All around you, the town becomes bare and open. Well.
- 23:16Speaker 1: Rex says, I think that will do for my first collection,
- 23:21Speaker 1: though I may return later for more. He begins raising
- 23:26Speaker 1: the platform back into the ship. No Waiver says, You
- 23:32Speaker 1: look at the ruined town and feel a heavy sadness.
- 23:36Speaker 1: That is one of the rudest things you've ever seen.
- 23:39Speaker 1: We can rebuild, Quaver says weakly, But he stole so
- 23:46Speaker 1: many notes, so many songs, it will take a very
- 23:53Speaker 1: long time. You look up at Rex's ship. Its hull
- 23:59Speaker 1: is glowing with streams of stolen music, weaving through it
- 24:03Speaker 1: like veins of light. Spaceship flies over beside you. He
- 24:09Speaker 1: may have taken what they already sang into existence, but
- 24:13Speaker 1: that is not the same as taking music itself. What
- 24:18Speaker 1: do you mean, you ask, I mean, as long as
- 24:22Speaker 1: the people here have the ability to create music, they
- 24:26Speaker 1: can recreate everything that has been taken. And you say,
- 24:33Speaker 1: maybe they can create something to stop him altogether. Quaver,
- 24:39Speaker 1: I have an idea. What if you guys sing into
- 24:43Speaker 1: existence like a giant cannon that can shoot down Rex's ship,
- 24:48Speaker 1: or like I don't know, uh, tear it apart using
- 24:52Speaker 1: sound vibrations or something that is an excellent idea. Yeah,
- 25:01Speaker 1: Quaver looks back at the others. They all nod in unison,
- 25:06Speaker 1: and then they begin to sing. The musical notes leave
- 25:12Speaker 1: their mouths, They swirl around in the air, and then
- 25:17Speaker 1: bit by bit, they start forming themselves into what looks
- 25:23Speaker 1: like a gigantic cannon. It starts as an outline, and
- 25:28Speaker 1: then the pieces begin to fill in, until eventually there's
- 25:34Speaker 1: a gigantic sound cannon standing in front of you. Now, fire,
- 25:42Speaker 1: Quaver says, flying over to the cannon and hitting a
- 25:47Speaker 1: gigantic button on it. The cannon aims itself at Rex's
- 25:52Speaker 1: ship and unleashes a blast of pure sound energy. As
- 25:58Speaker 1: the energy hits his ship, the ship begins to shake.
- 26:03Speaker 1: The little pieces of programmable music matter that we're making up.
- 26:08Speaker 1: The new fins and engines start to crack and break
- 26:12Speaker 1: apart into their original music notes, and then the hull
- 26:19Speaker 1: of Rex's ship itself starts to crack. You see a
- 26:24Speaker 1: small explosion, and the ship starts to fly down towards
- 26:29Speaker 1: the ground to some sort of crash landing, leaving behind
- 26:35Speaker 1: the programmable music matter. The ship explodes in the distance,
- 26:42Speaker 1: but you see a smaller ship take off from it,
- 26:46Speaker 1: an escape pod, you realize as you watch the much
- 26:50Speaker 1: smaller t Rex shaped head shoot off into the sky.
- 26:56Speaker 1: Then the music people begin to save once again. This
- 27:02Speaker 1: time the little musical notes weave their way up into
- 27:06Speaker 1: the sky over towards the debris of musical notes that
- 27:12Speaker 1: is now falling like rain from well Rex's ship, or
- 27:16Speaker 1: what's left of it. The little music notes from the
- 27:21Speaker 1: song catch the other musical notes that Rex originally absorbed.
- 27:28Speaker 1: They fly through the air, they weave above the city,
- 27:33Speaker 1: and they begin quickly forming themselves back into the same
- 27:39Speaker 1: village that was there before. The bakeries are recreated, the
- 27:44Speaker 1: stores and statues are recreated. The houses and street lamps
- 27:51Speaker 1: come back into existence, looking even better and more beautiful
- 27:57Speaker 1: than before. Actually, the people stop singing, but you can
- 28:04Speaker 1: feel the resonant sound of the village being rebuilt. It's
- 28:10Speaker 1: full once again. Thank you, Quaver says, you have saved
- 28:18Speaker 1: our city. Ah here, welcome. Rex is kind of my fault.
- 28:24Speaker 1: After all, he tends to follow me around and try
- 28:27Speaker 1: to stop my plans. We have sort of a love
