- 0:00AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile have agreed in principle to form a
- 0:04joint venture to pool their wireless spectrum and build a
- 0:08unified satellite to phone network.
- 0:10You read through the industry reports on this and it
- 0:13immediately jumps out because you rarely see those three
- 0:16sharing anything. I mean they, they usually fight
- 0:18over every single subscriber and, you know, every available
- 0:22spectrum license they can find. Right, so seeing them form an
- 0:25alliance is highly unusual. Yeah, it really is.
- 0:28Which makes you look at the Wall Street analysis and ask, are the
- 0:31wireless carriers doing this to permanently eliminate cellular
- 0:34dead zones for you? Or are they just forming A
- 0:37defensive huddle because of what SpaceX is doing to the
- 0:41telecommunications market? Well, the reason these
- 0:43terrestrial rivals are suddenly shaking hands requires looking
- 0:46really closely at SpaceX. They are quickly becoming a
- 0:50direct competitor here. Yeah, absolutely.
- 0:52Because SpaceX is no longer just providing rockets or selling
- 0:54dishes for your roof, they are becoming an actual network
- 0:57operator. Look at the numbers they have
- 0:59reached. Starlink currently has over 9
- 1:02million subscribers spread across 155 countries.
- 1:05They maintain 59 global carrier partnerships.
- 1:09They even provide the Wi-Fi for Air Force One.
- 1:11The scale of the operation is continuously expanding.
- 1:15People tend to think of SpaceX purely as an Internet service
- 1:18provider or an aerospace company, but the reality is more
- 1:22like the company that builds the delivery trucks suddenly
- 1:26deciding they're going to deliver the packages themselves.
- 1:29That makes total sense. Right, because SpaceX is using
- 1:31its own hardware in its own spectrum to bypass the
- 1:35traditional carriers entirely. They are building the
- 1:37infrastructure to go straight to the user.
- 1:39They also recently spent $17 billion to acquire highly
- 1:43valuable wireless spectrum from Echo. 17 billion.
- 1:47Yeah, and wireless spectrum is essentially invisible real
- 1:50estate. You need the rights to transmit
- 1:52on specific frequencies. So spending $17 billion just for
- 1:56the airwaves shows they are entirely serious about
- 1:59controlling the whole pipeline. And they're not just holding on
- 2:02to that spectrum, they're actively deploying their next
- 2:05generation V2 satellite. The V2 unit.
- 2:07Yeah, the hardware specifications on those V2 units
- 2:10are exactly what is causing problems for the legacy
- 2:13carriers. Because the V2 satellite
- 2:15satellites possess 100 times the data density and 20 times the
- 2:20throughput of their first generation hardware. 100 times
- 2:24the data density. If you are an executive at a
- 2:27legacy telecom company, you are suddenly looking at a rocket
- 2:30manufacturer that has better cell towers in orbit than you
- 2:33have on the ground. Exactly.
- 2:35If SpaceX controls both the satellite infrastructure and the
- 2:38spectrum, they can dictate the terms of any partnership they
- 2:42enter into. Although T-Mobile already has a
- 2:44commercial partnership with Starlink, I mean they were the
- 2:46very first carrier to sign on for direct to cell service.
- 2:49Like they were. So T-mobile's participation in
- 2:52this new joint venture with AT&T and Verizon is a clear signal
- 2:56they want alternatives to a SpaceX monopoly.
- 2:59They do not want to be entirely dependent on a single supplier
- 3:02who is also, you know, actively building out a competing
- 3:05network. Faced with SpaceX morphing into
- 3:07a direct network operator, the legacy carriers need a
- 3:11structural defense. Which leads to the actual
- 3:13physical mechanics of their new joint venture.
- 3:16Right, and that relies heavily on spectrum pooling.
- 3:19Defensively, teaming up makes sense in the boardroom, but
- 3:22practically merging 3 totally separate, highly guarded
- 3:26cellular networks to talk to space is a really difficult
- 3:29engineering problem. The joint venture plans to
- 3:32combine their terrestrial frequencies.
- 3:34Specifically, they are pulling the 600 megahertz, 700 megahertz
- 3:38and PCs bands. If you think of wireless
- 3:40spectrum like a highway, right now AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile
- 3:44all have their own private narrow lanes.
- 3:46By pooling the 607 hundred and PCs bands, they're essentially
- 3:50knocking down the concrete barriers to create one a huge
- 3:54superhighway. Pulling the spectrum increases
- 3:56spectral efficiency. When you have a larger
- 3:59contiguous block of frequency, you can target it more
- 4:01effectively with satellite phased array antennas.
- 4:03And that larger block allows for a much higher data throughput.
- 4:07Yes, it supports A significantly higher number of simultaneous
- 4:10users. It also solves a major physical
- 4:12problem called out of band emissions.
- 4:14Right, that happens when high power satellite signals bleed
- 4:17into adjacent frequencies. Because a satellite signal is
- 4:20incredibly loud. Think of radio frequencies like
- 4:24apartments in a building. The satellite is a neighbor with
- 4:28a huge subwoofer. If it is not coordinated
- 4:31properly, that noise bleeds through the walls and degrades
- 4:34the performance of ground based cell towers.
- 4:37So by coordinating the spectrum use of all three major carriers,
- 4:41they can create designated quiet zones for satellite
- 4:44transmissions. Exactly.
- 4:46That protects the terrestrial towers while still providing
- 4:48coverage to your phone on the ground.
- 4:50But the execution of this plan requires solving intense physics
- 4:53problems. I mean they have to handle
- 4:55complex Doppler shift compensations in real time.
- 4:58Because the satellite isn't stationary, it's moving at
- 5:00thousands of miles an hour in low Earth orbit.
- 5:03Think of a police or ambulance siren as it speeds towards you.
- 5:07The itch sounds higher and as it passes, the pitch drops.
- 5:10Right, the Doppler effect. Now imagine your cell phone
- 5:12trying to maintain a connection to a satellite moving at 17,000
- 5:16mph. The frequency, the actual pitch
- 5:18of the data is constantly warping.
- 5:21The carriers have to build software that actively predicts
- 5:24and corrects that warp in milliseconds.
- 5:26Or your call simply drops. Yeah, and beyond the physics,
- 5:29they have to agree on common AP. Is they have to unify their
- 5:33billing back ends too. You are talking about
- 5:36integrating the proprietary systems of three huge
- 5:39competitors in real time. If you were driving down a rural
- 5:43Rd. And your phone needs to switch
- 5:45from a Verizon ground tower to an AT&T managed satellite
- 5:50connection. The systems have to authenticate
- 5:52your device. And verify your billing status.
- 5:55And route the data instantly across shared space to ground
- 5:59links. Legacy corporate bureaucracies
- 6:01might severely slow down this technical integration.
- 6:04They are trying to build a consensus driven platform across
- 6:073 distinct corporate cultures. Meanwhile, SpaceX is completely
- 6:11vertically integrated. They own the satellites, they
- 6:13own the spectrum, they write the software and they build the
- 6:15Rockets. That vertical integration gives
- 6:17them a really significant speed advantage.
- 6:19It gives SpaceX more more time to capture the market while the
- 6:23carriers are stuck in committee meetings arguing over API
- 6:27standards. Well, the lack of a firm legal
- 6:29contract or technical timeline for the joint venture points
- 6:32directly to the financial timing of the announcement.
- 6:35This looks less like an operational deployment and more
- 6:38like a carefully timed corporate signal.
- 6:41Right, because SpaceX is preparing for a highly
- 6:44anticipated initial public offering, they're targeting a
- 6:47capital raise of up to $75 billion.
- 6:51Financial analysts at Light Shed Partners looked at this joint
- 6:54venture and noted that it is currently just a press release.
- 6:57It's not an operational deal. It acts as a signal to Wall
- 7:00Street to sow doubt about SpaceX having an uncontested run at the
- 7:04direct to device market. You announce an agreement in
- 7:06principle and the primary point is the announcement itself.
- 7:10The carriers want investors to think twice before assuming
- 7:12Starlink will completely dominate mobile connectivity.
- 7:15And SpaceX reacted exactly how you would expect.
- 7:18Gwynn Shotwell, Spacex's president, publicly called the
- 7:22alliance David and Goliath Times 3.
- 7:25She said she is betting on David.
- 7:27Framing a company raising $75 billion as the underdog is a
- 7:31clever public relations move, but they also went aggressively
- 7:35after the legal angle. Spacex's vice president of
- 7:37satellite policy, David Goldman suggested the Department of
- 7:40Justice might view 3 dominant competitors aligning against a
- 7:44new rival as a form of collusion.
- 7:46I look at the timing and lean toward the view that it is a
- 7:50hollow public relations stunt tying strictly to disrupt
- 7:54Spacex's investor roadshow. They have no operational
- 7:57framework yet. You really think so?
- 7:59Yeah, they just wanted to generate negative headlines
- 8:00right before SpaceX asks the market for $75 billion.
- 8:04I see the joint venture as a necessary corporate defense.
- 8:07They are recognizing a severe threat to their core business
- 8:10model and pooling their resources to build a
- 8:12standardized alternative. They have to do this to survive.
- 8:15Well, if the carriers want to avoid antitrust scrutiny and
- 8:18make this joint venture functional, they need satellite
- 8:21partners other than Starlink. Right, they need to prove this
- 8:24is an open platform and not just a closed monopoly, which is why
- 8:28AT&T and Verizon are heavily backing AST Space Mobile.
- 8:32AST is a company focusing on high speed cellular broadband
- 8:36rather than just basic texting capabilities from space.
- 8:39They actually demonstrated download speeds of nearly 100
- 8:42megabits per second from space. They achieved that using huge
- 8:47phased array antennas. Phase array antennas do not
- 8:50physically move to track a target like a traditional
- 8:53satellite dish. They use hundreds of small
- 8:56elements to electronically steer the radio beam directly to an
- 8:59unmodified smartphone on the ground.
- 9:01Delivering 100 megabits per second means you could
- 9:03potentially stream video from a tent in the middle of a National
- 9:06Park. The issue for AST is
- 9:09infrastructure scale. They only have a handful of
- 9:11satellites in orbit right now. They also recently lost a
- 9:14satellite during a rocket failure.
- 9:16Which highlights the exact risk of relying on third parties.
- 9:19If you rely on external rockets to build your network, a failure
- 9:23halts your progress. Unlike SpaceX, who builds both
- 9:27the Rockets and the satellites, so they control their own
- 9:30deployment schedule. Exactly Another alternative the
- 9:33carriers are looking at is Amazon's Project Kuiper, known
- 9:36as Amazon Leo. The friction between these
- 9:39aerospace companies and terrestrial brands usually comes
- 9:42down to who actually controls the customer experience.
- 9:45Right. Look at what happened with Delta
- 9:46Airlines. Delta rejected Starlink.
- 9:49Because SpaceX demanded A frictionless connection without
- 9:52a login portal. SpaceX wanted the Internet to
- 9:55just works seamlessly the moment you connect to it on the plane.
- 9:58But Delta wanted to force passengers through their custom
- 10:01Delta Sync ecosystem. If you've flown Delta and had to
- 10:04deal with a login screen just to get Wi-Fi, you know exactly what
- 10:07this is. Delta wants you to login, see
- 10:09their branding, maybe watch an advertisement or link your
- 10:12frequent flyer account. They want to control the digital
- 10:15journey. So Delta chose Amazon Leo
- 10:17instead. That illustrates exactly why the
- 10:20joint venture exists. Carriers want a standardized
- 10:23system they can control, rather than bending to the proprietary
- 10:27rules of a single satellite provider.
- 10:29Right, if you rely entirely on Starlink, you have to play by
- 10:33Spacex's rules. If you build a unified platform
- 10:36that works with AST, Amazon, and others, the carriers retain
- 10:40their power over the customer relationship.
- 10:42Setting aside the corporate maneuvering, the actual defense
- 10:45the carriers will use for regulators rests on how this
- 10:48architecture impacts the average smartphone user.
- 10:51Well, terrestrial networks currently failed to provide a
- 10:54signal to users roughly 2.79% of the time.
- 10:57That percentage sounds small, but when you apply it to
- 11:00hundreds of millions of smartphone users, it represents
- 11:03millions of instances where people are completely
- 11:06disconnected. It means dropping calls on rural
- 11:08highways, having no navigation in national parks or losing
- 11:11connection during emergencies when local cell towers lose
- 11:14power. A unified standard means any
- 11:16phone can connect to any qualified satellite.
- 11:19This effectively eliminates rural dead zones entirely.
- 11:22It also provides critical disaster resilience when ground
- 11:25networks fail, such as during extreme weather events.
- 11:29We have clear historical precedence for this kind of
- 11:32industry cooperation. Industry cooperation created GSM
- 11:35roaming and the E 911 emergency system.
- 11:38Right before those standards, using your phone outside your
- 11:41home network was incredibly difficult.
- 11:44With E 911, carriers had to agree on shared technical layers
- 11:47so that emergency calls would route successfully regardless of
- 11:51which company owned the nearest. Tower The government forced them
- 11:54to carry those calls. If the FCC and the Department of
- 11:57Justice approved the joint venture, satellite connectivity
- 12:00stops being a premium carrier add on, it becomes a reliable
- 12:03baseline public utility. Making emergency communications
- 12:06universal is a very strong argument against the claims of
- 12:09collusion. It serves a clear public good
- 12:12that individual market forces have not been able to solve on
- 12:14their own. The boundary between ground
- 12:16based cell service and space based Internet is disappearing.
- 12:20The physical infrastructure is merging into one continuous
- 12:23network. So the wireless carriers
- 12:25realized they had to cooperate in the sky so they could
- 12:27maintain their positions to compete on the.
- 12:29Ground the question is whether consumer will actually be
- 12:33willing to pay extra for this invisible safety net, or if the
- 12:38market will quickly expect satellite backup to be a
- 12:41standard free feature of owning a smartphone.
