- 0:47Hey, y'all, welcome to today's show. Today, I want to wrap
- 1:03up our readings this week from Saint Irenaeus about well, I'd say, sort
- 1:10of wide ranging, isn't I mean? He starts out talking about why God
- 1:14made man and what man's duty is to God, and then yesterday he was
- 1:19getting into the nature the purpose for the Torah or mosaic law and how it
- 1:29is fulfilled and of course we are freed from the law in Christ. I'm
- 1:34going to wrap that up today, hopefully God willing. But first we'll turn
- 1:38to radio replies and the questioner goes on to ask the priests or actually just
- 1:47a state deposits. We shall say there are many intelligent people who do not
- 1:53bother about religion. They answer, in what way are they intelligent? And
- 1:59club? Some are clever in mathematics, others in law, but they may
- 2:05be very ignorant in the science of religion. A Catholic school child could teach
- 2:09many of them quite a lot in this matter. Your argument might have some
- 2:15value if they were well instructed in the truths of religion, but it is
- 2:19very little use saying I know very clever, very clever doctor, and he
- 2:23has never studied music, so I did not see the use of music.
- 2:27The doctor's medical knowledge is no argument against music, and not all the learning
- 2:32of your friends in mathematics and science, physics or astronomy can be an argument
- 2:37against religion. Their knowledge of these things does not make Heaven the least bit
- 2:43less worth having, nor Hell one jot more comfortable, one jot more comfortable.
- 2:50Let us serve God before whom all the wisdom of men is childish prattle,
- 2:54and who, in his infinite wisdom, declares that religion is necessary not
- 3:00only in honesty and goodness, but in order to be honest and good.
- 3:05I think it's very gosh, how relevant is this today? A friend of
- 3:09mine also writes for Mizzio Day, you know an internet for him. We've
- 3:13never met in person. Dave Debay wrote a great article today from Missio Day,
- 3:19and it was about his conversion essentially from atheism to becoming Catholic Christian.
- 3:29And it's interesting because he quotes well, I wouldn't say he references. He
- 3:34explains a lot of modernists or postmodernist positions that I wouldn't say lead people to
- 3:43become atheists, but that atheists used to defend their belief and it's you know,
- 3:50and he makes a very good point that they don't like faith. They
- 3:53just don't have faith in God. They don't like belief. They just don't
- 3:57have faith in or belief in God. They have faith and belief in themselves
- 4:01and in their peers and in people they deemed to be wise. Well,
- 4:06you know, you could bring up so many, oh so many very wealthy,
- 4:14very intelligent people, very you know, high IQ's that have been atheist
- 4:23or agnostic or whatever, and you cannot deny certainly that they are intelligent,
- 4:30educated people. But this makes this answer from where your prise makes a very
- 4:34good point in what field are they educated? You know, I grew up
- 4:42around doctors and hospitals in such my mom was a medical professoral hospital administrators,
- 4:48psychologists, the whole pit, and so our circle of friends, or her
- 4:54for circle friends really when I was a child, you know, surgeons and
- 4:58diagnosticians, diagnosticians, and plenty of nurses and people in various fields, pharmacists
- 5:03and all kinds of people, imminent psychologists and writers and all that very very
- 5:12educated. But you know what was very clear to me even from a very
- 5:15early age, was there were very very educated in their specialty in their specification,
- 5:23their one field, and they may know nothing about anything else. I
- 5:28can think of many people who whom I've known, who are college professors,
- 5:32imminent writers, experts in their field, who wouldn't know how to change the
- 5:36oil in their own vehicle, right. I mean, this guy may have
- 5:40written ten books and taught classes for twenty years and be considered to be the
- 5:45expert in the field of you know, of I don't know architecture or something
- 5:49right, or a great scientist or whatever does not know the basics of things
- 5:57that you know, kid that grew up in a farm knows about soil health
- 6:02or taking care of livestock, or like I said, changing the oil and
- 6:05a vehicle or a flat tire, or plumbing, general house repair things.
- 6:14You know. They would say, well, I studied my field, that's
- 6:15up to the plumber to learn plumbing. Well yeah, that's great, absolutely,
- 6:19but you also have to acknowledge that person could learn basic plumbing if they
- 6:27wanted to. They could learn basic autominence. They make the choice not to.
- 6:31Oftentimes they will disparage someone who is in what they would call the trades
- 6:36as being ignorant because they didn't go to you know, some prestigious college to
- 6:42study architecture or whatever, or mathematics or you name it right, But no,
- 6:48it's not the case at all. They're just as ignorant. The college
- 6:51professor is just as ignorant of those skills that the plumber or the mechanic has
- 6:59who took time to learn, as the plumber mechanic may be of mathematics and
- 7:03architecture, and you may be surprised the plumber mechanic may know a little bit
- 7:08more than you think. Often people who have to work with their hands have
- 7:14a little more knowledge in various fields than those who specialize in academic or professional
- 7:20pursuits. We often quote the old trade a jack of all trade. The
- 7:26quote we often quote the old saying a jack of all trades and master of
- 7:30none, But the full quote is actually a jack of all trades and master
- 7:36of none is often better than a master of one. Those who actually have
- 7:43to rely on practical knowledge use math more than most professional people. Often use
- 7:51architecture, design, physics, have an understanding of science, metals, and
- 8:00chemicals, And I mean you would be very surprised what an ignorant farmer so
- 8:03called it actually knows. My grandfather was such a man absolutely brilliant in probably
- 8:11thirty or forty different fields, could literally do everything, and had barely a
- 8:16high school education. But he could build houses. He was a carpenter,
- 8:22brick mason. He was a farmer. He was a cattleman. He built
- 8:28and ran his own sawmill. He was a real estate developer. He did
- 8:31historic preservation for the state. He could fix anything on the farm, including
- 8:37cars, vehicles. He could fabricate anything that was needed in his workshop from
- 8:41wood to metal. He built furniture, He built a living history museum.
- 8:46He was a politician, a justice of the peace, a park ranger.
- 8:48I could go down. I could go on and on about everything that man
- 8:52could do. He even designed his own nuclear fallout shelter in the nineteen fifties,
- 8:58with its own air filtration, water system, electric and everything of his
- 9:03own design. The man was absolutely brilliant and capable and had no formal education
- 9:13beyond high school. When we think about people who say, you know,
- 9:20they make these really grand assumptions about religion, you really do have to ask
- 9:26how educated is this person in religion? How much time have they actually spent
- 9:31reading the great works of philosophy and religion from various cultures, the early Christian
- 9:39writers, the doctors of the church. Have they read Augustine, have they
- 9:43read a Quietness? Have they really thought and been instructed, because remember,
- 9:50you have to be instructed in the faith. Or have they just made the
- 9:56assumption that often based upon the views of their peers in college and in professional
- 10:03life, that they are educated elites and they don't believe in God. That's
- 10:09just for the uneducated masses. Well, that's what's been taught in colleges at
- 10:13least since the late eighteen hundreds. You know, the Marxists belief that religion
- 10:18is the opiate of the masses and that the elites, the educated, have
- 10:24no need of Christianity. Well, you know, their knowledge may be very
- 10:31deep in one subject, but it may be very shallow in others. And
- 10:35unfortunately, the natural arrogance of man, the natural pride of man, can
- 10:43make that a very insulated or insular position, and they don't allow conflicting information
- 10:50in. They don't step outside of their comfort zone. And oftentimes, the
- 10:56more educated, the more successful, et cetera, a man is, the
- 11:01less likely he will be to humble himself in seeking education or instruction from people
- 11:07he deems to be inferior, and that's a very dangerous thing. That's what
- 11:11we'll lead to eugenics and like Nazis exterminating people, and you know, elite
- 11:20in the bureaucracy, what we might call a deep state. They have their
- 11:24own little fiefdom and they have their own little hold on power, and they're
- 11:28not interested in what other people believe. And that's in terms of eternity,
- 11:35that may be probably the most dangerous position for any man. You know,
- 11:41a poor, uneducated person who's humble, who's very open to learning, has
- 11:52a far better chance of getting to heaven than one who has a ton of
- 11:56education and the arrogance it often goes along with it. So the man goes
- 12:01on and says, you keep hinting that God not only demand's religious worship,
- 12:05but that he has actually specified the way in which men must offer such homage.
- 12:11Do you mean that God has actually told men of his demand explaining its
- 12:16condition? And they answer, yes. God has told man very clearly why
- 12:22he created man, what is the destiny of man, and what man must
- 12:28do in order to obtain that destiny. He sent the prophets to teach men
- 12:33his will. After that, he sent the prophets to teach men his will.
- 12:37After that he sent his own divine son, Jesus Christ. And Christ
- 12:41sent the Catholic Church, a church still teaching with the infallible authority of God
- 12:46in our very midst. And that, my friends, it brings us back
- 12:52to Saint Irenaeus, saying, ironeus and yes, today's message explained why the
- 13:01law was given to the Jews. And I don't think I actually gave you
- 13:05the title of this chapter. It is. At first God deemed it sufficient
- 13:11to inscribe the natural law or the Decalogue, upon the hearts of men.
- 13:16But afterwards he found it necessary to bridle with the yoke of the Mosaic law
- 13:20the desires of the Jews who were abusing their liberty, and even to add
- 13:26some special commandments because of the hardness of their hearts. And today's chapter we
- 13:31will wrap this up, is chapter sixteen from the fourth Book of Against Heresy,
- 13:37entitled perfect righteousness was conferred neither by a circumcision nor by any other legal
- 13:43ceremonies. The Decalogue, however, was not canceled by Christ, but is
- 13:48always in force. Men were never released from its commandments. He begins.
- 13:54Moreover, we learned from scripture itself that God gave circumcisim not as a completer
- 14:00of righteousness, but as a sign that the race of Abraham might continue recognizable,
- 14:05For it declares God said into Abraham, every male among you shall be
- 14:11circumcised, and ye shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskins, as a token
- 14:16of the covenant between me and you. This same does Ezekiel the Prophet say,
- 14:22with regard to the Sabbaths, also I gave them my Sabbath to be
- 14:26a signed between me and them, that they might know that I am the
- 14:30Lord that sanctify them. Very important that iron Airs makes a very profound point
- 14:39that the circumcision that was demanded God demanded of the Jews of Abraham and his
- 14:46descendants is very much like the Jewish Sabbath. Essentially, the Jewish Sabbath is
- 14:52a sign. You would almost call it a circumcision of time. Kind of
- 15:01an interesting concept. But also it was exclusively for the Jewish people, the
- 15:09descendants of Abraham, and does not apply to Christians. Neither does the circumcision
- 15:16of the flesh. It is very very unfortunate in my opinion that culturally,
- 15:24thanks to our Protestant heritage. Here in America, parents are encouraged to have
- 15:31their sons circumcised. There's no medical reason for it, and actually can be
- 15:39quite damaging, quite damaging. The circumcision demanded of Abraham by God was specifically
- 15:48for the descendants of Abraham, as explained in the Old Testament, and the
- 15:54Jewish Sabbath was also specifically for the Jewish people, as explained again in the
- 16:02Old Testament. Iron As goes on in Exodus, God says to Moses,
- 16:07and ye shall observed by sabbaths, for it shall be a sign between me
- 16:11and you for your generations, for your generations, the generations of Moses.
- 16:18That means specifically, people who are of the heritage of Moses. These things
- 16:26then were given for a sign. But the signs were not unsymbolical. That
- 16:30it is neither unmeaning nor to no purpose, inasmuch as they were given by
- 16:33a wise artist. But the circumcision after the flesh typified that that after the
- 16:41spirit. For we say, the apostles have been circumcised, with the circumcision
- 16:47made without hands, and the prophet declare circumcised the hardness of your hearts.
- 16:53But the Sabbaths taught that we should continue day by day in God's service,
- 16:57For we have been counted, says the apostle Paul, all the day long
- 17:02as sheep for the slaughter that is consecrated to God, and ministering continually to
- 17:07our faith, and preserving it in it, and abstaining from all avarice,
- 17:11and not acquiring or possessing treasures upon earth. Moreover, the Sabbath of God,
- 17:18that is the Kingdom, was as it were indicated by created things,
- 17:22in which the Kingdom, the man who shall have preserved and serving God,
- 17:27shall in a state of rest or take of God's table. This is a
- 17:33very important teaching of Saint Iron, as the Sabbath is the rest of God,
- 17:42God's rest, that is also the Kingdom of God. Now, what
- 17:48did Jesus say to the man who asked him? Well, to the holy
- 17:55young man who he was ascribe, who answered correctly essentially what God demanded of
- 18:00man, and he basically summed up the same thing. You know that Jesus
- 18:04would say when ask the same question, Love God, love your neighbor.
- 18:07Right, And Jesus said, you are not far from the Kingdom of God.
- 18:12Jesus also said in his earthly ministry, the Kingdom of God is near,
- 18:17or the Kingdom of God is at hand. Jesus is the Kingdom of
- 18:22God. When he came to earth, he brought the Kingdom of God.
- 18:29The Kingdom of God is here with us. As Christians. We are in
- 18:33effect in the rest of God. We are in the Sabbath of God.
- 18:38As Christians. No longer was the Sabbath of God this day, when one
- 18:44could do no work. We live in it. Ere every day is consecrated
- 18:52as it were to God. And the worship that is due was due to
- 18:57God. Or the Sabbath is the worship we give to God every single day.
- 19:02As I have said so many times, people ask where is heaven.
- 19:04Well, heaven is where God is. Whereas God, God is within your
- 19:08heart. Therefore Heaven is within your heart. Where is the Kingdom of God?
- 19:12Well, the Kingdom of God is within your heart. And where is
- 19:15the Sabbath of God. The Sabbath of God is within your heart. Ironeus
- 19:22goes on and that man was not justified by these things, but that they
- 19:26are given as a sign to the people. This fact shows that Abraham himself,
- 19:30without circumcision and without observance of sabbaths, believed in God. And it
- 19:34was imputed unto him for righteousness, and he was called the Friend of God.
- 19:40Then again a lot without circumcision was brought out of Sodom, receiving salvation
- 19:45from God. So also did Noah, pleasing God, although he was uncircumcised,
- 19:49received the dimensions of the ark of the world of the second race of
- 19:55men en It too, pleasing God without circumcision, discharge the office of God's
- 20:00legate legate to the angels, although he was a man and was translated,
- 20:07and is preserved until now as a witness of the just judgment of God.
- 20:11Because the angels, when they had to transgressed, fell to the earth for
- 20:15judgment, but the man who pleased God was translated for salvation. Moreover all,
- 20:22the rest of the multitude, of those righteous men who lived before Abraham
- 20:26and of those patriarchs who preceded Moses, were justified independently of the things above
- 20:32mentioned and without the law of Moses. As also Moses himself says to the
- 20:36people in Deuteronomy, the Lord thy God formed a covenant in Horeb. The
- 20:41Lord formed not this covenant with your fathers, but for you. Why then
- 20:47did the Lord not form the covenant for the fathers, because the law was
- 20:52not established for righteous men. But the righteous fathers had the meaning of the
- 20:57Decalogue written in their hearts and souls, that is, they loved the God
- 21:02who made them, and did no injury to nighbor. There was therefore no
- 21:07occasion that they should be cautioned by prohibitory mandates, because they had the righteousness
- 21:14of the Law in themselves. But when this righteousness and love of God had
- 21:18passed into oblivion and became extinct in Egypt, God did, necessarily, because
- 21:23of his great good will to men, reveal himself by a voice, and
- 21:27led the people with power out of Egypt, in order that man might again
- 21:32become the disciple and follower of God. And he afflicted those who were disobedient
- 21:37that they should not condemn, contemn, have contempt toward I guess their creator.
- 21:42And he fed them with manna that they might receive food for their souls,
- 21:48as also Moseses and Deuteronomy, and fed thee with manna, which thy
- 21:53fathers did not know, that thou mightest know that man doth not live by
- 21:57bread alone, but by every word of God proceeding out of his mouth,
- 22:00doth man lived, and it enjoined love to God and taught just dealings toward
- 22:07our neighbor, that we should neither be unjust nor unworthy of God, who
- 22:11prepared men for his friendship through the medium of the Decalogue, and likewise for
- 22:18an agreement with his neighbor matters which did certainly prophet man himself, God,
- 22:22however, standing in no need of anything from man. In other words,
- 22:27the entire law of Moses was to restore the Hebrew people to the state of
- 22:37Abraham and Noah. And who well else did he mentioned, you know,
- 22:45the prophets of Elijah, Alicia, Enich that was who it was, Enik,
- 22:49who was you know, actually taken up from Earth and didn't die.
- 22:56They had fallen into such grave error and servitude in Egypt. You have to
- 23:00remember in the Bible and the Old Testament, God did not want the people
- 23:07of Egypt. I mean, God did not want the people of Israel to
- 23:11have a king. He wanted them to live simply by His word and his
- 23:15precepts. What are his word and his precepts? Love God with all your
- 23:18heart, and love your neighbors yourself. He said, if they did,
- 23:22he'd protect him. He'd go out and battle before them. And as long
- 23:25as they were loyal to his word. They did. He warned them strongly,
- 23:32do not if you have a king, He's essentially going to make slaves
- 23:36out of you. And they said, we want a king, We want
- 23:38to be like every other nature, every other nation. And whenever they fell
- 23:42so far into sin through idol worship, he would have them defeated and taken
- 23:48into slavery by another nation. Essentially, they had come to appreciate the security
- 24:00of slavery over the freedom of God. Therefore God gave them a law that
- 24:08enslaved them. To these statutes, we make an tremendous mistake, or anyone
- 24:15who believes this makes a tremendous mistake when they try to apply toward a law
- 24:18to Christians, because I mean, pick up your Bible, go to the
- 24:23New Testament, read through the acts and the letters of Saint Paul, read
- 24:29the plain words of Jesus, and you will see that we are free,
- 24:30We are no longer under the law. We are not slaves, but we're
- 24:33heirs. The New Testament is full of explanations of why Christians no longer need
- 24:41to be circumcised, and if physical circumcision was no longer necessary circumcision of time,
- 24:51which is what the Sabbath is, was also done away with. When
- 24:56ask what was necessary, Jesus did not mention and observe the Sabbath. He
- 25:02only said love God with all your heart, love your neighbor, don't steal,
- 25:06don't commit adultry, etc. He didn't say a word about the Sabbath.
- 25:10And in fact, the Christian Christianity has recognized Sunday the new day of
- 25:15the new Man set free free from the law, the day the Lord rose
- 25:19from the dead, after having borne the whole the entire penalty, you know,
- 25:25the wages of center death. He bore it and he raised up anew.
- 25:30You can go back to the Dak, which was written before the Bible
- 25:33was completed, as I always say, if you want to know what Christians
- 25:36actually thought in the early Church, what their actual words were when they said,
- 25:41this is how, when, how we worship, when we worship,
- 25:45why we worship, and what we do. It's in the Dak or the
- 25:48teachings of the Twelve. But to try to impose circumcision Jewish Sabbath's dietary laws,
- 25:59etc. A lot of people think that you have to speak Hebrew or
- 26:03call Jesus the Hebrew name of Joshua Yeshua. In order to be a good
- 26:08Christian is pure heresy, well meaning, well intended people, full of faith,
- 26:15but very misguided and not in accord with the word of God, not
- 26:22in accord with the will of God. And you know, frankly, we
- 26:30as Catholics need to know how to defend our faith because in so doing we're
- 26:37correcting error, and that's something we're charged to do by God. But we
- 26:45can also help people draw closer to the will of God by being able to
- 26:49answer these questions. And you know, here was Saint irony Us writing against
- 26:53heresy in I mean before three I'm not sure exactly the exact date. And
- 27:00you know, if people just would read this today, but it wouldn't be
- 27:06a question. People wouldn't be casting about wandering in the dark thinking they found
- 27:11some secret. You know, I read to day about some cult leader who
- 27:15calls himself Jesus, who boasts that he has like fifteen hundred sex slaves on
- 27:21some island somewhere. How do you think people got on that island with him?
- 27:26They were given false information and not given the truth. I mean,
- 27:33you know, yeah, we could talk about jonestown We could talk about the
- 27:36branch Dividians. We can talk about the Pilgrims. Do you want to talk
- 27:37about a crazy cult group? You know, I had an ancestor of the
- 27:41Mayflower. I can say this. They were a lunatic cult group, the
- 27:47Pilgrims that landed, you know, on the Mayflower and the Speedwell and all
- 27:51that up at Plymouth Rock. What would happen today if, say, in
- 27:56your next town, you had a group of people and if they cooked food
- 28:02or made a hot cup of tea on Sunday they were dragged the other house,
- 28:04putting the stocks and beaten with whips. I think you know, child
- 28:10services would be going in there pretty quickly to pull the kids out, and
- 28:12they would be named a cult. Right. But the Pilgrims that we all
- 28:17celebrate on Thanksgiving as the founders of our nation, which is ridiculous, they
- 28:21had nothing to do with the founding of our nation. They were a lunatic,
- 28:26fringe Protestant cult group. I can tell you my ancestor, who was
- 28:32quite devout, would have probably given anything to have been given the truth.
- 28:37But he thought he was following the truth by going into that cult group,
- 28:41as presumably do those you know those people on that island with whatever this crazy
- 28:45cult leader is. Now we have a duty to our fellow man to set
- 28:48this right. By the way, I have nothing against the Pilgrims. A
- 28:53lot of their writings were quite good, and I'm sure they were quite good
- 28:57people. But it's a fall. So that's taught in schools that America began
- 29:02on the grounds of religious liberty through the Pilgrims. First of all, America
- 29:07did not have religious liberty. The Pilgrims came here to escape the English,
- 29:14who were persecuting those who didn't belong to the Anglican Church. Well into the
- 29:21late eighteen hundreds, it was illegal to be Catholic in North Carolina and in
- 29:25many states. Religious freedom is an absolute myth in terms of the founding of
- 29:30America. Our ancestors mainly came here well, some to escape persecution for one
- 29:36reason or another. That it also includes a lot of Irish and who just
- 29:40wanted to get away from the English who were enslaving their nation and starving them
- 29:45to death. But mainly people came here for land. In Europe, the
- 29:52wealthy, the lords, and the gentry owned the land, and you didn't
- 29:56have a lot of opportunity, because land is the true source of wealth.
- 30:02You could maybe have had a little just enough to have a garden to feed
- 30:07your family, and that was it. You couldn't buy land to raise a
- 30:11bunch of crops and actually become wealthy or you know secure. People wanted land
- 30:17to hunt, they wanted land to farm, they wanted waters to fish,
- 30:21they wanted land to trap. Our country was very much pioneered by trappers.
- 30:26They wanted land to cut timber. You know, you can't build houses without
- 30:30timber and stone. You don't have timber and stone, or that's what they
- 30:33had back then. You know, you didn't build a house. So those
- 30:37who owned the land controlled everything. Our ancestors mainly came here for economic opportunity.
- 30:42The myth of Thanksgiving was propagated after the Civil War as a means of
- 30:48trying to reunify the country under really a false narrative, because in truth,
- 30:56America began in the South, Jamestown, you know, the first colonies and
- 31:00are Walter, Raleigh and such historic Williamsburg. You know, this is where
- 31:06America actually began. And our first what five seven presidents were all Southern,
- 31:11mostly from Virginia. The Declaration of Independence was written by Virginia, and the
- 31:15Constitution was written by a couple of Virginians. You know, even at that
- 31:21time, you could have argued that Philadelphia was much more of a Southern city
- 31:23than it was northern. As it was considered by the time of the Civil
- 31:29War, the South is the birth of America. But see, after the
- 31:34Civil War they had to undo that. You know, we say the victor's
- 31:37right the history, so in our history books say pretty much relegated the actual
- 31:45founding of America, the actual founding fathers, the actual founding documents to the
- 31:49dustbin of history, and came up with this fanciful narrative that these pilgrims came
- 31:56over for religious freedom, which you know, trust me, they didn't come
- 32:02here to be Catholic, I can tell you that much. They were basically
- 32:07a fringe cult group, originally socialist until they most of them, starved to
- 32:10death and then had to figure out that capitalism works and socialism doesn't. And
- 32:15they came here and they lived in peace and harmony with the Indians and had
- 32:20a big feast. You know, they're part true and a lot false,
- 32:24but it has really nothing to do with the founding of our nation at all.
- 32:30But that's you know, the crap you're taught in school. And like
- 32:32I said, the victors right, the history. You want to know how
- 32:36America was really founded, well start with our founding documents and see you know
- 32:43what influenced Thomas Jefferson and James Madison and all that. And you know,
- 32:47I was very pleased to find out the other day that George Washington actually converted
- 32:52to Catholicism at the very end of his life. He had been a member
- 32:57of the Masonic Order. He was actually the head guy of the Masonic lodges,
- 33:01and he converted to Catholicism through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary at
- 33:07the end of his life. That should be taught in school. Well,
- 33:13why should it be taught in school, because you know that actually matters what
- 33:19some people with funny hats, some big buckles on their shoes had a meal
- 33:23with some Indians really doesn't affect your life or mine whatsoever, does it.
- 33:30Even though one of my ancestors, fitz Randolph, what was among them.
- 33:35I'm very proud of that. But trust me, you and I would not
- 33:40have wanted to live in Pilgrim Protestant New England. I mean they just pull
- 33:47you out of your house and beat you and put you in the stocks and
- 33:50throw things at you if you even had a fire in your fireplace on Sunday.
- 33:54They did not allow the celebration of Christmas or Easter. They were really
- 34:00not I would go so far as say, not sane, but probably a
- 34:07lot more in common with the fringe groups like the Seven day Adventist and the
- 34:14tour Observant Christians and the Jehovah's Witnesses and such than anything mainline Christian or that
- 34:22would be in common with the founding principles and ideology of America. And I'm
- 34:31not saying that well, I mean we could get into that too. I
- 34:35mean, you know, as much as I love Benjamin Franklin, yeah,
- 34:39he had some really weird religious ideas. He was quite the ladies man,
- 34:44shall we say? He had many affairs in his life. He used to
- 34:47work out nude on his balcony so he could show off his body to everyone
- 34:53in town. When he was a young man, slept with a lot of
- 34:57women who earned his wife, had a lot of affairs, actually counseled and
- 35:01instructed other young men in their shall we say, romantic pursuits, saying that
- 35:08they should pursue widows to have their affairs with. So they're wild oats because
- 35:17you know, younger women were less practical about worldly things. You know,
- 35:27we could really get into some of the more interesting aspects of our founding fathers.
- 35:34George Washington was not a very loyal friend, for instance, and that
- 35:37caused a lot of issues. Not of them were perfect people. My ancestor,
- 35:42Charles Carroll essentially funded the entire American Revolution. He was the most wealthy
- 35:47man in America. He was the only Catholic who signed the Declaration of Independence.
- 35:52Sure he was a slaveholder, Cail. We get into the morality of
- 35:57owning slaves, Yes, we absolutely could. But isn't it better to talk
- 36:00about the truth than myths, such as you know, the Thanksgiving Pilgrims.
- 36:07I mean, honestly, it's like ten percent true and ninety percent faults.
- 36:12And you know, as much as I loved Russia, Lymbball, every Thanksgiving
- 36:15he would read this story of the Pilgrims, and you know, it was
- 36:17great, but you know, he didn't also didn't touch on the fact that
- 36:22they were sort of a nutball religious cult, and you know, all that
- 36:29and really had no appreciable influence on the founding of America whatsoever. It's like
- 36:36a tangential story. I mean you might as well. I mean, you
- 36:40know, it was a myth also that George Washington as a kid, you
- 36:45know, cutting down the cherry tree and said, when ask who cutting down
- 36:47the tree, said, I cannot tell a lie. It was I.
- 36:50It was I. That was That was a myth made up by a biographer
- 36:52later in time. Dad doesn't contribute anything to the founding of the nation.
- 37:00We can throw out the myths and just look at George Washington, say,
- 37:04you know he was he was a good man on this point. He was
- 37:07a very flawed man on this point. Uh, definitely somewhat of an opportunitist
- 37:14at points, not the most loyal friend, great president, great general.
- 37:20Became Catholic at the end of his life. That's pretty cool. And that's
- 37:22something you know, they absolutely won't teach in public schools. We can look
- 37:30at the man as a man, not the man as a myth. And
- 37:34I think we should do that in all regards, whether it's a person or
- 37:37a country or or our church. You know, let's look at it all
- 37:44aspects. The good the bad and the ugly, and at the end of
- 37:47the day, it's still going to stand because guaranteed by Jesus, you know,
- 37:52every human institution is going to be full of humans who are are flawed
- 37:58and bad. To deny that is, to just open yourself up to attacks
- 38:04by people who want to destroy you. You have to be honest. Well,
- 38:08anyway, let's get back to Irons, he said, And therefore does
- 38:15the scripture say these words. The Lord spake to all the assembly of the
- 38:20children of Israel in the mount, and he added no more, for as
- 38:23I have already observed, he stood in need of nothing from them. And
- 38:27again Moses said, and now, Israel, what doth the Lord require of
- 38:30thee but to fear the Lord thy God, and to walk in all his
- 38:34ways, and to love him, and to serve the Lord thy God with
- 38:37all thy heart and all thy soul. Now these things did indeed make man
- 38:42glorious by supplying what was wanting to him, namely the friendship of God.
- 38:46But they profited God nothing, for God did not stand in need of man's
- 38:51love. For the glory of God was wanting to man, which he could
- 38:55obtain in no other way than by serving God. And therefore us says to
- 39:00them again, choose life, that thou mayst live. And I seed to
- 39:04love the Lord, thy God, to hear his voice, to cleave unto
- 39:07him, for this is life and the length of thy days, preparing man
- 39:12for this life. The Lord did speak in his own person to all like
- 39:15in the words of the Decalogue, and therefore in like manner do they remain
- 39:20permanently within us, with us receiving by means of his advent in the flesh,
- 39:24extension and increase, but not abbrogation. The laws of bondage, however,
- 39:31and what he means by that but not abrogation. Extension in priests were
- 39:35Remember what Jesus said, You know, you were taught in the Ten Commandments,
- 39:38or Moses told you how I put it, you should not commit adultery,
- 39:43he said, I say, if you lust after a woman in your
- 39:45heart, you have already committed adultery. He said, you should not commit
- 39:50murder. I say, if you know, if you hate your brother,
- 39:52you've already committed murder. Jesus actually expanded, and especially in regards to marriage.
- 40:00You know, he said absolutely Moses may have said, due to the
- 40:05hardness of your hearts, he gave you a way to get divorced. I
- 40:07say, absolutely not. Christians may not get divorced. And his followers said,
- 40:14this is a hard teaching. How in the world can we follow.
- 40:15And he said, well, if you can't follow, it's better if you
- 40:17don't get married in the first place. Yeah, I mean, he made
- 40:22the law even harder in that regard. And Ironaeus explains the laws of bondage,
- 40:30however, were one by one promulgated to the people by Moses, suited
- 40:35for their instruction and their punishment, as Moses himself declared, and the Lord
- 40:39commanded me at the time to teach you statutes and judgments. These things therefore,
- 40:45which were given for bondage and for assigned to them, he canceled by
- 40:49the new covenant of liberty. He canceled the laws of bondage, circumcision,
- 40:54and the Sabbath, and the dietary laws, and the cleanliness laws, the
- 41:00handwashing and not touching a dead body, and not associating with gentiles. Obviously,
- 41:07that was the whole point of the vision given to Saint Peter, of
- 41:10all the unclean things so called on the sheet that descended from heaven. And
- 41:15God said to him eat, and he said, I've never eaten anything unclean.
- 41:19He says, call nothing that God made unclean. He canceled by the
- 41:28new covenant of liberty, just said that, okay. But he has increased
- 41:30And why okay? But he has increased him widened those laws which are natural
- 41:37and noble and common to all, granting to men and without grudging by means
- 41:42of adoption, to know God the Father, and to love Him with the
- 41:45whole heart, and to follow his words unswervingly, while they have stained not
- 41:50only from evil deeds, but from the desire after them. But he has
- 41:55also increased the feeling of reverence for Sun should have more veneration than slaves,
- 42:00and greater love for their Father. And therefore the Lord says, as to
- 42:05every idle world word that men have spoken, they shall render an account for
- 42:08it in the day of judgment. And he who has looked upon a woman
- 42:13to lust after her hath committed adultery, are already with her in his heart.
- 42:17And he that is angry with his brother without cause shall be in danger
- 42:21of judgment. All this is declared that we may know that we shall give
- 42:25account to God, not of deeds only as slaves, but even of words
- 42:34and thoughts, as those who have truly received the power of liberty, in
- 42:37which condition a man is more severely tested whether he will reverence and fear the
- 42:42love of the Lord. And for this reason, Saint Peter says that we
- 42:45have not liberty as a cloak of maliciousness, but as the means of testing
- 42:51and evidencing faith. So, like I said, there's nothing new under the
- 42:58sun, these heresies that people were promigating today. I mean, I'll just
- 43:04tell you flat out. Anybody who says they know the truth, the truth
- 43:07of God, and what they teach is in opposition with the teachings of the
- 43:10Catholic Church is de fact wrong because God guaranteed the Catholic Church. He did
- 43:17not give another truth. And there's the Bible says at the end of the
- 43:22Book of Revelation, let me no further revelation. A lot of these cult
- 43:25leaders and such I knew one one time. I knew a minister who claimed
- 43:29to have all kinds of visions and prophecies. He was an absolute con man.
- 43:34He stole a lot of money. Unfortunately, I worked for him for
- 43:37a while. I was in college. I wasn't that bright, but I
- 43:45found out what he was about, and wanted nothing to do with him,
- 43:47and was fired summarily. And no one would listen. When I tried to
- 43:52say, look, he's stealing from you, well, they didn't want to
- 43:54believe me. He's praying upon the women in your church sexually as well.
- 44:00No one wanted to believe me that. As I said, nothing new under
- 44:05the sun. Saint Irenaeus began the two hundreds refuting almost all the heresies we
- 44:13see around us today. Saint Paul and Saint Peter were doing it in the
- 44:17in the New Testament, in the Bible, I mean from the very beginning
- 44:22when the church was established. Within what a year, they had encountered Simon
- 44:30Magnus, Simon the Magician, and condemned him, denounced him, and he
- 44:34went off and formed another church, claiming that he was Jesus and he had
- 44:37the truth, and he basically took all the teachings of the apostles and twisted
- 44:42him and made himself very wealthy and powerful. Apparently there were statues to him
- 44:46in some area. According to I think it was it was Justin Martyrs,
- 44:52Saint Justin Martyr who wrote about Simon Magnus. And we're talking you know,
- 45:00the Apostles were still alive, and they were false teachers and false churches,
- 45:05and they were warn't against very you know, very openly, very plainly.
- 45:07In the New Testament, the Apostles say, if anyone comes bringing a teaching
- 45:12different than that we have given you, reject them, have nothing to do
- 45:15with them. They're people representing Satan. That's exactly what Martin Luther did.
- 45:22That's the exact founding of all Protestant fifty thousand denominations, all of which disagree
- 45:28with each other, and each of which disagrees with the Catholic Church. They're
- 45:32all faults, very simple, very plain, and you know it could be
- 45:39uncomfortable when a missionary comes to your door, an anti Catholic a cost you
- 45:45in a grocery store. You know, be ready, be ready to defend
- 45:49your faith. It just takes a little bit of reading in your Catechism,
- 45:53and a little bit of reading in the Bible, and a little thought and
- 45:57a little prayer, and a little conversation with others, especially people who you
- 46:04know catechists or people who are into apologetics. They are great books. The
- 46:09Essential Catholic Survival Guide is a good one. Born fundamentalists born again Catholic.
- 46:15Oh, they're various ones that will teach you how the arguments that the more
- 46:22prominent of the denominations, beginning with the Lutherans and the Anglicans and on up
- 46:27I guess through the Seven Day adventis and Jehovah's witness will make against Catholicism,
- 46:31and how you can refute them in just like two or three sentences. Yeah,
- 46:37it's not comfortable. Yeah, we'd rather not have to deal with that.
- 46:42But I mean, it's not exactly becoming a martyr, is it.
- 46:47You know, tomorrow is the commemoration of several important martyrs in the Church who
- 46:54were slaughtered, tortured to death for their faith. And all we have to
- 47:00do is have a slightly uncomfortable conversation every now and then. It's not too
- 47:06much to ask at all, is it. Trust me, it's easier,
- 47:10probably less controversial for me to have certain conversations about Catholicism than it is to
- 47:16point out that, you know, the Pilgrims really worked important in American history.
- 47:22People really get upset about that stuff. You know, those are the
- 47:25myths that people hang their cultural identity on. You know, I'm having an
- 47:32honest conversation about Abraham Lincoln is not something that basically ever happens in America shooting.
- 47:43I mean, I don't know, I don't know if it's the case
- 47:45or not. But look at the articles that came out just to what five
- 47:51years ago, maybe about what the FBI had found on doctor Martin Luther King.
- 47:58I mean, yeah, I remember wants to say he was this great
- 48:00moral leader and hero. Apparently there were a lot of law enforcement documents that
- 48:08said he was up to some pretty shady stuff. Try bringing that up in
- 48:14polite conversation. I mean, and people would really much rather believe the myth
- 48:22than know about the man. And I mean, I don't know what's true
- 48:25or not on that. I'm just saying, you bring that up, and
- 48:29you're gonna get called racist in the blink of it. I if someone says
- 48:34to you, you know, defend your beliefs about the Catholic Church, you
- 48:37should be able to say, well, we believe in the euchers because Jesus
- 48:39said this, We believe in baptism because Jesus said this. We believe in
- 48:44going to a priest for forgiveness, because Jesus said, you who sends you
- 48:46forgive or forgiven, and those who sends you retain or retained. We believe
- 48:52the Catholic Church wrote the Bible, the Catholic Church published and the only reason
- 48:58you have a Bible is because the Catholic Church. So you know, your
- 49:01idea that Catholics aren't allowed to read the Bible or don't want people to read
- 49:05the Bible, it is completely false. You know how easy is it just
- 49:10say, you know, Protestant will say that their church has been around since
- 49:15Jesus. They say, well, show me the archaeological evidence. I mean,
- 49:19especially for like a Jehovah's Witness. They're not even a Protestant group,
- 49:21right. Jehovah's Witness say they were these great cities and kingdoms in America long
- 49:27before you know, Christopher Columbus ever got here. And after Jesus rose from
- 49:30the dead and appeared in Jerusalem, he came to American preached to the Native
- 49:35Americans, and you just say, well, where are those cities? Show
- 49:37me the archaeological evidence, you know. I mean they're not talking about the
- 49:42pyramids down in you know, the Mayan ruins down in Mexico. I mean
- 49:47they're talking like right here in America. They're supposed to be these great cities.
- 49:51You just say, well, show them to me, show me the
- 49:52archological evidence, show me the buildings. Well, you could say that to
- 49:57anyone. Show me a Baptist church before, you know, five hundred years
- 50:00ago. Actually it's not even that old. Show me a Methodist church.
- 50:05Show me any church that existed that wasn't Catholic fifteen hundred and two thousand years
- 50:10ago. They can't. So, I mean it's really easy to win the
- 50:15arguments. I mean, it just takes you a little tiny bit of study.
- 50:20But then you know, nine times out of ten they're not going to
- 50:23listen to you anyway. Still, you have a duty. It's shameful to
- 50:31kind of duck the questions or sneak away without engaging. You do them no
- 50:38favors by allowing them to remain ignorant, and you do yourself a great deal
- 50:43of harm spiritually. You know, Jesus told said we were supposed to stand
- 50:50as witnesses for his truth. And it's yeah, it's uncomfortable, but that's
- 50:55not just no, there's really no kind of marred them to run away from.
- 51:00So anyway, y'all, in the words of Saint Padre Pio, pray,
- 51:06hope and don't worry, and I'll talk to you tomorrow
