- 0:00Yeah. Cody, just uh first just talk
- 0:03about I mean now it's I guess a couple
- 0:05of months back but it feels like a
- 0:06whirlwind. Uh what's it like to be back
- 0:08at Auburn?
- 0:09>> Incredible. Um this is home. Always has
- 0:11been, always will be. Um phenomenal
- 0:15place. Phenomenal town. Everything about
- 0:17Auburn and what you learn is football's
- 0:21a real thing, but it's also about all
- 0:24the sports. It's about the university.
- 0:26It's about that logo you put on your
- 0:27chest. just means a lot to to be at a
- 0:30place like Auburn and I'm blessed to to
- 0:33be here once again. Yeah.
- 0:36What just was kind of I guess the the
- 0:38initial reaction maybe the emotions of
- 0:40it when AG kind of told you about like
- 0:43this opportunity and wanting to bring
- 0:44you along of course you know coming back
- 0:46to your your own modern
- 0:48>> Yeah I think surreal right just
- 0:51emotionally
- 0:53incredible um just my journey to get
- 0:58here as a player now my third time here
- 1:00as a coach just incredible and being
- 1:03able to come back with somebody I really
- 1:05respect, believe in, and coach Gooish.
- 1:09Um, again, I'm at a loss of words. And
- 1:12to be able to come back to my
- 1:13university, my alma mater, and really
- 1:16help us get the program back to where
- 1:18you're winning championships again, cuz
- 1:20every time I've been here, that's what
- 1:22I've done. And so, I'm excited to be
- 1:24back at at my alma mater and give back
- 1:27to just give back so much of what Auburn
- 1:30gave to me. and um I'm ready to get to
- 1:32work, which that's all we've been doing.
- 1:35>> You you know what it takes at Auburn and
- 1:37you know what it takes in this offense.
- 1:39How how would you describe that and as a
- 1:42wide receiver group what it takes to be
- 1:44successful on both of those fronts?
- 1:46Yeah, I think I talk to my players right
- 1:49now all the time about it and here at
- 1:50Auburn, you got to be different. And I
- 1:52think it starts with just the edge and
- 1:54and the toughness factor that you got to
- 1:56be able to be critical in the run game
- 1:58to be able to help there. And that
- 2:00obviously opens up the pass game. And
- 2:02when you look at defenses, right, you
- 2:03have to be able to stop the run. That's
- 2:05football one-on-one. I don't care if
- 2:07you're offensive coach, defensive coach,
- 2:09they always talk about we have to stop
- 2:11the run, we have to run the ball. And so
- 2:13when you're able to run the ball due to
- 2:16receivers also helping in the run game
- 2:18as a defensive coordinator, you got to
- 2:20allocate resources in the box. So now
- 2:22you go from two high to one high. And
- 2:24that's when as a wide out, you want to
- 2:25go eat. And so our offense is wide open.
- 2:29We're going to take what the defense
- 2:30gives us. And um we're have a lot of
- 2:33opportunities for receivers to go
- 2:35one-on-one and be out in a lot of space.
- 2:37And that's when we operate at a high
- 2:39clip. and um why there's been success
- 2:43dating back to us at Tennessee, Coach
- 2:44Kolas at UCF, and also USF the last
- 2:47year.
- 2:48>> Yeah. What what excites you about this?
- 2:50I mean, it's a rebuilt wide receiver
- 2:51room, but you know a lot of the guys
- 2:53that are in it here. What excites you
- 2:54about this room,
- 2:55>> man? Just uh these guys know the system.
- 2:58Um ultra competitive. Um and then also
- 3:02guys that have been proven, right? Like
- 3:03we open up, you play Boise, number 25 in
- 3:06the country, and then have two guys that
- 3:08essentially go for 100 yards. You know,
- 3:10you play Florida in the swamp at USF,
- 3:13really good defense. Obviously struggled
- 3:15a little bit offensively last year, but
- 3:17defensively a real team, and you go in
- 3:19there and you win in the swamp, which is
- 3:20hard to do. Um, and then you play Miami,
- 3:23you got a guy that goes for close to 140
- 3:24yards, and Chaz and Keshan that went,
- 3:27you know, close to 100 as well. So, we
- 3:29have guys that are proven, um, at this
- 3:32level. I don't care how you slice it.
- 3:34And that's the one thing about the
- 3:36country and and as far as playing
- 3:38football. I don't care what level you're
- 3:40playing at, everybody has really good
- 3:41skilled players. The difference in that
- 3:44league and in the SEC is the O line D
- 3:46line. It's just a different ball game.
- 3:48But there's a ton of good skilled
- 3:49players. Man, dating back to when I was
- 3:51at MTSU, I had NFL guys. When I was at
- 3:53Arkansas State, I had NFL guys. Um, so
- 3:56anywhere you you go, there's going to be
- 3:58really talented, skilled players. and
- 4:00and as long as those guys translate into
- 4:02what you do and fit the specs and and
- 4:04and the mold of what you want to do, um
- 4:08you're you're going to be fine. So,
- 4:09again, obviously rebuilt, there were
- 4:11some talented guys in the room, a couple
- 4:13guys last year that chose to do
- 4:15something else. And that's what college
- 4:17football is right now. And what you have
- 4:18to do is you have to adjust, right? You
- 4:20got to adapt. And what we did is we
- 4:22brought guys in that we feel like can go
- 4:24out there and get it done.
- 4:27Sorry if you already asked this, but
- 4:28what's the value of familiarity between
- 4:31a quarterback and his wide receivers?
- 4:33Someone like Byron Brown's trying to
- 4:34make the jump to the SEC to have a bunch
- 4:36of guys that he's played with already in
- 4:38his career.
- 4:39>> Yeah. From a quarterback perspective,
- 4:41you know, you always preach timing,
- 4:43precision, and accuracy. And a
- 4:45quarterback has to be comfortable with
- 4:46who he's thrown the ball to. And so, you
- 4:49can really um accelerate that process
- 4:52when you have familiarity with the guys
- 4:54that you're throwing to. So, there's a
- 4:56couple guys that have played a ton of
- 4:58ball last year with Byron Brown um that
- 5:01he feels really comfortable with that
- 5:03you can really close your eyes as a
- 5:04quarterback and know this is where he's
- 5:06going to be at and that gives you
- 5:07confidence, right? And you don't have to
- 5:09spend time figuring things out in a game
- 5:12in the season like it's already been
- 5:14proven. He already knows what it is. And
- 5:16so I think that's the biggest key is
- 5:18just everybody being on the same page
- 5:20and you don't have to figure out who you
- 5:23are as a team throughout the course of
- 5:24the first couple games and figure it
- 5:26out. So
- 5:27>> feels like that would be beneficial to
- 5:29receivers making the jump in the SEC
- 5:31too. The fact that they have a
- 5:32quarterback that they that they just
- 5:34spend at least one season playing with.
- 5:36>> Yeah. Look, I I think I obviously I play
- 5:39quarterback like quarterback is the
- 5:40hardest position to play in all the
- 5:42sports I think. And so as a receiver,
- 5:44like our job is to be where we're
- 5:46supposed to be for the quarterback,
- 5:47right? And so definitely helps for the
- 5:49wide outs, but more so it helps the
- 5:51quarterback being comfortable with the
- 5:53guys he's throwing to.
- 5:55>> You mentioned, I mean, Keshan's got a
- 5:57lot of pub. Kog's got a lot of pub. Chaz
- 5:59is a guy that that people seem to have
- 6:01overlooked a little bit. You mentioned
- 6:02him. What does he bring to the table for
- 6:04you guys?
- 6:05>> Man, Chaz is uber explosive. Um, I
- 6:08signed Chaz um, out of high school at
- 6:09Tennessee and he played quite a bit of
- 6:12ball in the SEC and has been proven. Um,
- 6:15and he's explosive. He's really, really
- 6:19talented. And again, he got overlooked
- 6:21because when you look at last year, he's
- 6:23a guy going into the season and really
- 6:26the first few games was kind of the guy
- 6:28and then he ended up getting a lower uh,
- 6:30body injury and so he missed a lot of
- 6:33time, but he was on track to go for
- 6:35close to about 1,200 yards. So just who
- 6:37he is as a person. He's really really
- 6:39smart. He's dynamic and he's one of the
- 6:41more explosive players I've I've ever
- 6:43been around. Like he can really run and
- 6:45he's a good player.
- 6:47>> When you look at some of the former
- 6:49players who like came back with you guys
- 6:50after Bryce Kenn, what are your plans
- 6:53for him and your goals see them do this?
- 6:56>> Yeah, you really want to see those guys
- 6:57continue to grow and develop, right?
- 7:00They've Bryce did a ton special teams
- 7:02didn't necessarily take a ton of snaps
- 7:04at receiver. Um, and then Sam as a as a
- 7:07young player as well that really red
- 7:09shirted and you those guys have a chance
- 7:11to being on offense where we're uber
- 7:14explosive that they'll get exposure to
- 7:16things they've never seen and really
- 7:18done before. So, I'm just excited to
- 7:20work with them on a day in and dayout
- 7:21basis to where they can truly grow and
- 7:24develop as wide outs. And that's the
- 7:25key, man. You got to you still there's
- 7:27still um as hard as college football is
- 7:30and a ton of transfers and guys leaving
- 7:33them, there's still you still have to
- 7:34develop players, right? That's our job
- 7:36is to to to get the best out of the guys
- 7:39that you have. And so I'm excited to get
- 7:41a chance to work with both those those
- 7:43players.
- 7:44>> Cody, you you guys come in and and know
- 7:47you got to sign some high school kids,
- 7:48too. Go grab a few guys late. just talk
- 7:51about the additions you made and and
- 7:53maybe what uh what what fans might see
- 7:55out of those guys.
- 7:56>> Yeah, so um really dating back to the
- 7:58the last place I was at at USF. There's
- 8:01guys that we were really high on and you
- 8:03kind of call them out of reach that man
- 8:05they're they're probably going to be
- 8:06bigger than than where we were at the
- 8:07time. And so been a blessing to be able
- 8:09to get those guys here and number one
- 8:11Deshawn Spencer who I was big on, man. I
- 8:14thought he was always one of the better
- 8:16slots in the country and had an
- 8:17authentic relationship with him and his
- 8:19whole family and and we thought we had a
- 8:21real chance and and we honestly did at
- 8:23the end at USF and obviously just the
- 8:26timing of everything that where we get
- 8:28the job this Sunday right before signing
- 8:29day and then he's here and it makes
- 8:32sense right cuz he wanted to be in this
- 8:34system that we run in this offense but
- 8:36it's obviously hard to turn down the SEC
- 8:38so excited to be able to work with him
- 8:40uber talented comes from an inc
- 8:43incredible program at Sarah just put put
- 8:45players out and man long time ago we had
- 8:48Bis Jones right at Tennessee who I
- 8:50coached for a year and went third round
- 8:51and they're all kind of that same mode
- 8:53and they got the other kid that came out
- 8:54of there as well. So um super super
- 8:57talented and super excited to work with
- 8:58him. Then you got big Brian Williams
- 9:01right um a kid that um is really really
- 9:03talented uh played at a real program at
- 9:07TFA where they're playing national
- 9:08games. So he's had that exposure to some
- 9:10of the best players in the country. And
- 9:12you talk about size, you talk about the
- 9:14ability to bend and move and he he looks
- 9:17like a slot when he runs routes. And so
- 9:19I'm expecting a lot, you know, from him
- 9:21as far as developing really really quick
- 9:23with this size, his body control. And
- 9:26really for a quarterback, the bigger
- 9:27guys, like the catch radius is is really
- 9:29what stands out to me. And so he's
- 9:31really smart, uber talented, excited to
- 9:33work with him. And then you got the
- 9:34Brady Marches, right? So, um, just how
- 9:37everything works just worked out that,
- 9:39you know, he gets out of his deal at
- 9:41Michigan, he's able to come here and be
- 9:43an Auburn Tiger. Uber excited. He's
- 9:45another guy that I was on pretty early
- 9:46at the other place and and it got to a
- 9:48point like coach like we love you, but
- 9:50man, like we got some other stuff out
- 9:52there that's a little bit bigger. So,
- 9:54again, he's got he's got a chance to be
- 9:56a really good player. He's talented. He
- 9:58can really really run. He's tough. He's
- 10:00gritty. He's kind of that old school
- 10:02receiver that you like. So, I'm excited
- 10:03to get a chance to work with him as
- 10:05well.
- 10:05>> Cody, we got the news recently that Gus
- 10:08Wells has decided to retire. He was your
- 10:11coach for a stretch of your career. You
- 10:13knew about him getting back to to high
- 10:15school and obviously he had a had a big
- 10:17impact on your on your career. Just your
- 10:18your memories of of a coach and how you
- 10:21sort of received the news that that he
- 10:22he decided to to to uh to step down.
- 10:26>> Man, um really mentor to me. um
- 10:31everything that he meant throughout the
- 10:33course of my life um as a player, as a
- 10:36coach, giving me that opportunity um and
- 10:39really what he what he's meant to
- 10:40Auburn, right? Like when you talk to
- 10:42when I talk to coach, it's he talks
- 10:45about Auburn like we like, man, I I want
- 10:47us to get back. Like what do we got to
- 10:49do to continue to, you know, grow and
- 10:52get better? And so, man, just the the
- 10:55most respect for who he is as a person,
- 10:58Miss Christie, his daughters, um what
- 11:02they've meant in my life is big. And and
- 11:04really like all he's wanted to do was
- 11:07help his former players in any way that
- 11:10that played here for him. And that's the
- 11:12man he is is that when you call him,
- 11:15it's all about connections. It's all
- 11:17about, you know, um the relationships.
- 11:20And that's what he is. He's a
- 11:22relationship based person. He's
- 11:23authentic. He's genuine. And again, um
- 11:27this is Auburn is a tough job, yet it's
- 11:30the best job in the country. And for him
- 11:33to be able to to do what he did here
- 11:36while he was here, I thought um spoke
- 11:39highly of who he is as a coach and who
- 11:42he is as a person. And I respect him for
- 11:45his time here. And again, this dates
- 11:47back for me from me being in high school
- 11:51growing up as a young kid in the state
- 11:53of Arkansas, seeing that this guy, Coach
- 11:55Mazine, this offensive genius, that man,
- 11:58I just want to have a chance to play for
- 12:00him. And it just so works out that I'm
- 12:02coming out of high school, he's at
- 12:04Arkansas, I choose to go to Auburn, and
- 12:07then two years later, he shows up and
- 12:09he's my coach. And then two years later,
- 12:11we win a national championship. and then
- 12:14three years later we go back to a
- 12:15national championship and then four
- 12:18years later we go to an SEC
- 12:19championship. Right? So,
- 12:22however you view him, he's done a lot
- 12:24for Auburn and I respect him and truly
- 12:27love him as a person and and and a coach
- 12:30as I would.
