- 0:00Speaker 1: On a mountain road bound for Smuggler's Notch, Linda Dixon's
- 0:03Speaker 1: failing car leaves her alone after dark as a prison
- 0:07Speaker 1: brake alert warns motorists of an armed killer. From CBS,
- 0:11Speaker 1: this is Inner Sanctum Mysteries, episode 513, Terror by Night,
- 0:17Speaker 1: originally broadcast June 29th, 1952. Agnes Moorhead stars as Linda,
- 0:24Speaker 1: a vacationer headed toward Mount Mansfield who stops at an
- 0:28Speaker 1: all-night service station as storm clouds gather. The script is
- 0:32Speaker 1: by Emile C. Tepperman, with Hyman Brown producing and directing.
- 0:37Speaker 1: And now, our story begins.
- 0:53Speaker 2: Good evening, friends of the creaking door.
- 0:55Speaker 3: This is your host to welcome you into the inner sanctum.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Come in, come in.
- 1:01Speaker 3: Ah, I always feel lighthearted in weather like this.
- 1:05Speaker 4: So perhaps we ought to have a little poetry before
- 1:07Speaker 4: we begin.
- 1:07Speaker 3: An Arab girl named Yuhim was lied to by her husband, Menuhim.
- 1:14Speaker 3: For this little trifle, she shot him with a rifle.
- 1:17Speaker 3: And now she can see right through him.
- 1:19Speaker 5: .
- 1:29Speaker 3: And now, if your scalpels are sharpened and ready, we
- 1:32Speaker 3: will proceed with the business of the evening. Tonight, we're
- 1:36Speaker 3: going to do a little study in terror.
- 1:40Speaker 4: Have you ever been alone with fear? Alone in the
- 1:44Speaker 4: night and frightened?
- 1:47Speaker 3: Well, here is our star, Agnes Moorhead, in the role
- 1:49Speaker 3: of Linda Dixon, who will tell us a tale of
- 1:53Speaker 3: terror by night.
- 1:59Speaker 5: It was Friday night, and I think I was already
- 2:01Speaker 5: a little nervous as I drove north into the mountains.
- 2:05Speaker 5: I hadn't wanted to waste even an hour of my
- 2:07Speaker 5: two-week vacation, so I'd had all my bags packed and
- 2:10Speaker 5: the car waiting at the curb in front of my
- 2:12Speaker 5: office building. Everything would have been all right if the
- 2:16Speaker 5: fuel pump in my six-year-old car hadn't acted up. It
- 2:20Speaker 5: took the mechanic almost two hours to get me going.
- 2:23Speaker 5: So now I was driving through the night with 50
- 2:25Speaker 5: miles more to go and I was tired and nervous
- 2:28Speaker 5: and irritated. And then I heard the whistle in the distance.
- 2:35Speaker 5: At first I couldn't place it. And then I remembered
- 2:38Speaker 5: the state prison was somewhere in the vicinity. The whistle.
- 2:43Speaker 5: It meant, it meant a prisoner had escaped. I reached
- 2:47Speaker 5: over and turned on the radio. Maybe they were broadcasting
- 2:50Speaker 5: something about it.
- 2:52Speaker 6: Motorists are warned.
- 2:53Speaker 7: To be on the lookout for Lee Hartley, who escaped
- 2:56Speaker 7: from the death cell at State Prison at 9.15 p.m. Tall,
- 3:00Speaker 7: dark hair, regular features, no distinguishing marks. Hartley is a
- 3:04Speaker 7: confirmed killer. He is believed to be armed.
- 3:08Speaker 6: Beware of Hartley. He would rather kill than eat.
- 3:11Speaker 5: He would rather kill than eat? And that man was loose,
- 3:14Speaker 5: perhaps waiting around the next bed in the road.
- 3:16Speaker 7: Hartley was helped to escape from the outside by his.
- 3:19Speaker 6: Sweetheart, Helen Hearn. A red-headed woman just as vicious as
- 3:23Speaker 6: Hartley himself.
- 3:25Speaker 7: It is thought that Hartley and the Hearn woman may
- 3:27Speaker 7: have separated after the escape. All motorists are warned to
- 3:31Speaker 7: beware of a dark-haired man and a red-haired woman alone
- 3:35Speaker 7: or together.
- 3:35Speaker 5: My hand was shaking a little as I turned off
- 3:38Speaker 5: the radio. I looked in the car mirror and shivered. I, too,
- 3:43Speaker 5: have red hair.
- 3:45Speaker 6: Oh!
- 3:53Speaker 5: There was a storm coming on and I was driving
- 3:55Speaker 5: into it and the night was black and I felt
- 3:57Speaker 5: small and lonely and frightened in the car. And then
- 4:02Speaker 5: I saw them in the mirror. The headlights sweeping up
- 4:05Speaker 5: behind me. A car. It had come out of nowhere.
- 4:10Speaker 5: It was pulling alongside, cutting me off. I cowered behind
- 4:14Speaker 5: the wheel and watched the door of that other car open.
- 4:18Speaker 5: A man stepped out. Oh, and I breathed a sigh
- 4:21Speaker 5: of relief. It was a state trooper.
- 4:23Speaker 6: You're driving all alone, miss?
- 4:24Speaker 5: Yes, officer.
- 4:25Speaker 6: Sorry if I scared you. We're stopping all cars. Where
- 4:27Speaker 6: are you headed for?
- 4:29Speaker 5: Well, I'm going up to the lodge at Smuggler's Notch.
- 4:31Speaker 5: That's near Mount Mansfield. You see, I started out late
- 4:34Speaker 5: from the city and I'm having motor trouble.
- 4:36Speaker 2: Yeah, sure.
- 4:37Speaker 6: Can I see your driver's license, please?
- 4:38Speaker 5: My driver's license?
- 4:40Speaker 2: Yes, of course.
- 4:42Speaker 5: Here, I've got it somewhere in my purse. I seem
- 4:46Speaker 5: to be all fingers. It's that escaped prisoner, Hartley.
- 4:49Speaker 2: How'd you know about him?
- 4:50Speaker 5: I heard the prison whistle, and then it came over
- 4:52Speaker 5: the radio about Hartley and his red-haired girlfriend.
- 4:55Speaker 6: Hey, you've got red hair, too.
- 4:58Speaker 5: You don't think I'm that woman.
- 5:00Speaker 6: Find that license yet?
- 5:01Speaker 5: Oh, yes, I'm sure it's in here. There aren't so
- 5:03Speaker 5: many things in this bag. Oh, here, here, I've got it.
- 5:06Speaker 5: Here's my license.
- 5:07Speaker 2: Thanks.
- 5:09Speaker 6: Hmm. What time did you say you left the city?
- 5:12Speaker 5: About five o'clock.
- 5:13Speaker 6: It took you a long time to get up this far.
- 5:15Speaker 5: Well, I told you I had motor trouble.
- 5:17Speaker 2: So you did.
- 5:18Speaker 6: Okay, Miss Dixon, here's your license.
- 5:20Speaker 5: Thank you.
- 5:20Speaker 6: You can go ahead. Thank you.
- 5:21Speaker 5: Oh, darn. There it goes again.
- 5:28Speaker 2: More motor trouble.
- 5:29Speaker 5: Oh, it's the same thing. The mechanic said it might
- 5:32Speaker 5: happen again. Oh.
- 5:33Speaker 6: Oh, it started again. You want to get that fixed,
- 5:38Speaker 6: first chance you get.
- 5:39Speaker 5: Oh, it's too late. All the service stations are closed.
- 5:41Speaker 8: Well, there's one that's open all night, about two miles
- 5:44Speaker 8: up the road.
- 5:45Speaker 6: Better stop there.
- 5:45Speaker 4: Bill Slater's place.
- 5:46Speaker 2: He's a good mechanic.
- 5:47Speaker 6: He'll fix you up. Tell him Joe Nesbitt sent you.
- 5:49Speaker 5: Thanks, I will.
- 5:50Speaker 6: And listen, Miss Dixon.
- 5:51Speaker 5: Yes?
- 5:51Speaker 6: You be careful. Don't stop to give anyone a lift,
- 5:54Speaker 6: man or woman.
- 5:55Speaker 5: Oh, don't worry. I won't. In a few minutes, I
- 6:06Speaker 5: saw the lights of the station. I swung into the
- 6:09Speaker 5: open space in front of the pumps and stopped. There
- 6:14Speaker 5: was another car, a coupe, parked at the pump, but
- 6:17Speaker 5: there was nobody in it. And I didn't see any
- 6:19Speaker 5: attendant around either. I pressed the horn button. No one answered.
- 6:26Speaker 5: Everything seemed so quiet and suddenly ominous. I found myself shivering.
- 6:33Speaker 2: Shivering?
- 6:34Speaker 5: I had a curious feeling that someone was watching me.
- 6:39Speaker 5: I had to get away from there.
- 6:40Speaker 6: Fast!
- 6:43Speaker 5: Oh, the starter wouldn't work again. Oh, it won't start again.
- 6:53Speaker 4: Oh, it won't start.
- 6:55Speaker 2: Oh, it won't.
- 6:57Speaker 5: Start. For a long time I sat behind the wheel listening.
- 7:07Speaker 5: Listening for the sound of footsteps stealing up behind the car.
- 7:10Speaker 5: But there were none. Then I could bear it no longer.
- 7:15Speaker 5: I had to get out of the car. I had
- 7:18Speaker 5: to see what was in that office. I opened the
- 7:21Speaker 5: door of the car and stepped down on the gravel.
- 7:32Speaker 5: Anybody in there?
- 7:35Speaker 2: No answer.
- 7:37Speaker 5: I clenched my fists and stepped inside. There on the
- 7:48Speaker 5: floor at my feet lay the body of a man.
- 7:51Speaker 5: His mechanic's jumper was stained red. And his throat was cut.
- 8:04Speaker 5: How long I stood there, I'll never know. I was petrified.
- 8:09Speaker 5: Unable to move, unable to take my eyes from the body.
- 8:15Speaker 5: What's that? Someone coming downstairs.
- 8:20Speaker 6: Hartley.
- 8:22Speaker 5: It must be Hartley, the killer. He must have been
- 8:25Speaker 5: hiding somewhere upstairs. I must get away.
- 8:31Speaker 6: But how?
- 8:32Speaker 5: My car won't run. That other car, the coupe. The coupe,
- 8:36Speaker 5: I can jump into that, yes. Yes. Oh, if I
- 8:39Speaker 5: can reach that coupe before he comes down.
- 8:42Speaker 2: Anything wrong, sister?
- 8:44Speaker 5: Oh, too late.
- 8:46Speaker 2: Anything I can do for you, sister?
- 8:49Speaker 5: Yes. Yes, it's my car. It won't start. I thought
- 8:55Speaker 5: someone here might help me.
- 8:57Speaker 2: Sorry. There doesn't seem to be anybody around.
- 9:01Speaker 8: That's my coop over there. I stopped for gas and
- 9:05Speaker 8: no one came out, so I went in.
- 9:07Speaker 2: And looked around.
- 9:08Speaker 6: But did.
- 9:09Speaker 5: Did you find anybody?
- 9:12Speaker 8: There isn't a living soul in there.
- 9:14Speaker 5: Oh.
- 9:16Speaker 2: You, uh... You look kind of tired.
- 9:20Speaker 5: No, no. No, I'm all right.
- 9:23Speaker 2: My name is Taylor. John Taylor.
- 9:26Speaker 5: Uh, I'm Linda Dixon.
- 9:29Speaker 2: Linda Dixon, hmm?
- 9:30Speaker 5: Yes.
- 9:30Speaker 2: Glad to know you.
- 9:32Speaker 8: You traveling far tonight?
- 9:35Speaker 5: I'm going to Mount Mansfield, to the largest smuggler's notch.
- 9:39Speaker 5: They're expecting me.
- 9:41Speaker 2: Well, what do you know about that?
- 9:43Speaker 5: What?
- 9:44Speaker 8: Mount Mansfield is the place I'm heading for, too.
- 9:48Speaker 2: Isn't that a coincidence?
- 9:50Speaker 5: I'm sure it is.
- 9:52Speaker 2: And your car won't run, huh? I'll tell you what.
- 9:56Speaker 8: We'll put your baggage in my car, and I'll give
- 9:59Speaker 8: you a lift.
- 10:00Speaker 2: To Mount Mansfield. You can send for your car in
- 10:03Speaker 2: the morning.
- 10:03Speaker 8: No.
- 10:04Speaker 6: I'll have your bag switched and.
- 10:06Speaker 8: Please.
- 10:06Speaker 5: No, I'd rather not.
- 10:07Speaker 8: Hang on.
- 10:10Speaker 6: All switched.
- 10:11Speaker 2: Now, come on. Get in here.
- 10:27Speaker 5: We drove away into the night, leaving behind.
- 10:30Speaker 9: Us the dead man in the service station.
- 10:47Speaker 3: Well, from where we sit, it looks as if Linda
- 10:51Speaker 3: Dixon's got herself into an awful jam.
- 10:54Speaker 4: And believe me, she's shaking like jelly.
- 10:56Speaker 3: Now, let's see how our star Agnes Moorhead and the
- 11:01Speaker 3: role of Linda Dixon is making out. All alone in
- 11:05Speaker 3: the car with a strange man. But after all, she
- 11:09Speaker 3: shouldn't be too scared of him. He's just a felon
- 11:12Speaker 3: who needs a friend.
- 11:13Speaker 5: I sat stiff and tense beside the man who called
- 11:20Speaker 5: himself John Taylor... He had both hands on the wheel
- 11:24Speaker 5: and he stared out through the windshield. My eyes focused
- 11:28Speaker 5: on something on his right hand. It was a stain,
- 11:32Speaker 5: a small stain, but it was wet and red. I
- 11:37Speaker 5: couldn't take my eyes off it.
- 11:39Speaker 2: What are you looking at?
- 11:42Speaker 5: Oh, nothing, nothing at all.
- 11:45Speaker 2: I think I'll turn on the radio. Did you know
- 11:48Speaker 2: there's been a jailbreak?
- 11:52Speaker 6: Hartley is 5'10, very dark hair. Don't be fooled by
- 11:57Speaker 6: his pleasant manner. He is a killer by instinct.
- 12:00Speaker 5: A killer by instinct? He is a killer by instinct.
- 12:02Speaker 6: And very dangerous.
- 12:03Speaker 7: He is accompanied by Helen Hearn. Helen Hearn is a
- 12:07Speaker 7: clever and dangerous woman. 5'3, red hair, very pretty.
- 12:12Speaker 5: I caught Taylor looking at me out of the corner
- 12:14Speaker 5: of his eye. What are you looking at?
- 12:17Speaker 2: At your hair. It's red.
- 12:28Speaker 5: There was a streak of lightning, and looking out of
- 12:30Speaker 5: the rain-swept window, I glimpsed a signpost. The lightning illuminated
- 12:35Speaker 5: the sign, and my heart skipped a beat at what
- 12:37Speaker 5: I saw. That sign we just passed.
- 12:41Speaker 2: What about it?
- 12:42Speaker 5: It said Barrington ahead. We're going the wrong way. We
- 12:45Speaker 5: should be on the Mansfield Road, not the Barrington Road.
- 12:47Speaker 2: That's funny. I must have taken the wrong turn.
- 12:51Speaker 5: Well, aren't you going to turn back?
- 12:54Speaker 2: Sure. Whatever you say.
- 12:59Speaker 8: We'll turn right around and go back.
- 13:07Speaker 2: We're in the ditch.
- 13:08Speaker 5: In the ditch.
- 13:10Speaker 6: Oh.
- 13:15Speaker 2: Not good. She won't budge. Well... Looks like we're stuck
- 13:22Speaker 2: here for the night. I.
- 13:25Speaker 5: I think I'd better get out and walk. Perhaps there's
- 13:27Speaker 5: a house nearby.
- 13:28Speaker 6: Walk?
- 13:28Speaker 2: In this weather?
- 13:29Speaker 5: I don't mind the weather, really. I don't.
- 13:31Speaker 2: You can't walk in this storm.
- 13:33Speaker 8: You're staying right here until I get the car out
- 13:36Speaker 8: of the ditch.
- 13:37Speaker 2: I've got some tools in the trunk compartment. You stay put.
- 13:46Speaker 5: I heard him open the trunk in the back. other sounds,
- 13:50Speaker 5: but there was nothing. I didn't hear him moving back there.
- 13:55Speaker 5: I didn't hear any tools. I had to find out
- 13:58Speaker 5: what he was doing. Slowly, carefully, I got my door open.
- 14:06Speaker 5: I stepped out into the rain and sneaked back toward
- 14:08Speaker 5: the rear. I saw him there, not moving, in front
- 14:13Speaker 5: of the open trunk compartment, bending over with a flashlight
- 14:15Speaker 5: in his hand. The ray of light was focused on
- 14:19Speaker 5: something curled up inside. It wasn't baggage or tools. It
- 14:24Speaker 5: was a woman's body.
- 14:27Speaker 2: Just then he saw me.
- 14:29Speaker 5: He snapped the flashlight off, but not before I caught
- 14:31Speaker 5: a glimpse of red. Then I must have fainted. When
- 14:48Speaker 5: I came to, I found myself seated inside the car again.
- 14:53Speaker 5: The storm was over. The night was quiet.
- 14:57Speaker 2: Ah, so you're awake again. I.
- 15:00Speaker 5: I don't feel well.
- 15:02Speaker 2: Is it because of what's in the trunk compartment?
- 15:05Speaker 6: Oh, she's dead.
- 15:07Speaker 2: I told you not to get out of the car.
- 15:10Speaker 5: What are you going to do with me?
- 15:12Speaker 2: What do you think?
- 15:18Speaker 5: They say that when a person loses all hope, he
- 15:20Speaker 5: subconsciously seeks refuge in sleep. That's what must have happened
- 15:23Speaker 5: to me. I must have dozed, or perhaps I fainted.
- 15:26Speaker 5: I don't know. But I awoke with a start at
- 15:28Speaker 5: the sound of brakes. I sat up straight and saw
- 15:33Speaker 5: that we had stopped in front of a small fieldstone house.
- 15:37Speaker 5: Why are we stopping here?
- 15:38Speaker 2: I'm out of gas.
- 15:41Speaker 5: Oh.
- 15:42Speaker 2: Come on. We're going in.
- 15:48Speaker 5: The sign on the door said, Roger Bryce, M.D. A
- 15:51Speaker 5: doctor's house. I began to feel a spark of hope.
- 15:55Speaker 5: There might be a chance.
- 15:56Speaker 2: I'll do the talking. Is that clear?
- 15:59Speaker 6: Yes.
- 16:01Speaker 2: There's the bell. It must be awake. There's a light
- 16:08Speaker 2: in the parlor. How do you do? Oh, good evening.
- 16:13Speaker 8: Dr.
- 16:13Speaker 4: Bryce?
- 16:14Speaker 6: Yes.
- 16:15Speaker 2: Can I help you?
- 16:16Speaker 8: I'm terribly sorry to disturb you, Doctor, but my sister
- 16:19Speaker 8: and I were heading for Mansfield and we seem to
- 16:22Speaker 8: have gotten lost.
- 16:24Speaker 2: And we're out of gas.
- 16:26Speaker 5: His sister? He was passing us off as brother and sister.
- 16:31Speaker 5: Now I knew why he hadn't cut my throat as
- 16:33Speaker 5: he had that service station man's. He was carrying me
- 16:37Speaker 5: for protection. I was his passport through the police cordon.
- 16:41Speaker 2: His sister.
- 16:43Speaker 8: I'm afraid I can't be of much help to you.
- 16:46Speaker 8: I'm seven miles from the nearest town and I haven't
- 16:48Speaker 8: any spare gasoline.
- 16:49Speaker 2: But come in, won't you? Why, yes, thank you, we will.
- 16:53Speaker 2: I wonder if I could offer you my hospitality for
- 16:55Speaker 2: the night. Oh, that would be imposing. Not at all.
- 16:58Speaker 2: I have two rooms that aren't being used.
- 17:00Speaker 6: Well, really.
- 17:01Speaker 2: Oh, come, come, I insist.
- 17:02Speaker 6: Oh.
- 17:03Speaker 5: I had hoped for a chance to talk to Dr.
- 17:06Speaker 5: Bryce alone, just a word to warn him. But Taylor
- 17:09Speaker 5: never left us alone for a minute. He insisted on
- 17:13Speaker 5: coming into my room to make sure, he said, that
- 17:15Speaker 5: it was comfortable enough for me. Then he took the
- 17:18Speaker 5: doctor by the arm and went out with him.
- 17:21Speaker 8: Good night, sis.
- 17:23Speaker 2: And sweet dreams.
- 17:27Speaker 5: I was alone, free of the presence of John Taylor.
- 17:31Speaker 5: I had another lease on life. I lay down on
- 17:34Speaker 5: the bed, but I didn't dare close my eyes. I waited,
- 17:40Speaker 5: my heart pounding to give them both a chance to retire.
- 17:42Speaker 9: And I slipped off.
- 17:44Speaker 6: My shoes and got off the bed in my stocking feet.
- 17:49Speaker 5: I stole across the room and inched my door open.
- 17:53Speaker 6: Slowly, carefully, I stepped.
- 17:56Speaker 5: Out into the corridor and turned right toward the doctor's room.
- 17:59Speaker 2: What's the matter, sister?
- 18:02Speaker 4: Sleepwalking?
- 18:03Speaker 8: No. You weren't thinking of going anywhere, sister, were you?
- 18:11Speaker 5: I wanted a drink of water.
- 18:12Speaker 2: A drink of water, huh? In case you didn't know it,
- 18:17Speaker 2: there's a water pitcher on your dresser.
- 18:20Speaker 5: Oh, I didn't see it.
- 18:23Speaker 2: Good night, sister.
- 18:24Speaker 5: I turned around and went back into my room.
- 18:29Speaker 6: It was no use.
- 18:31Speaker 5: I lay down on the bed. How long I lay there,
- 18:33Speaker 5: I don't know. Perhaps I slept, perhaps not, but I
- 18:38Speaker 5: heard that slight creak as my door began to inch open.
- 18:43Speaker 5: The blood chilled in my veins. Vaguely, I saw the
- 18:50Speaker 5: outline of the hand. And the knife it held. I
- 18:54Speaker 5: wanted to scream, but I couldn't. Slowly, he came toward
- 18:58Speaker 5: the bed. Now he stands over here. He raises the knife.
- 19:03Speaker 6: Ah!
- 19:07Speaker 5: I screamed and rolled over on the bed just as
- 19:09Speaker 5: the knife slashed down. I rolled off the bed and
- 19:12Speaker 5: cowered in a corner. That horrible figure came around the
- 19:15Speaker 5: bed after me with a knife up her head.
- 19:17Speaker 6: Help!
- 19:18Speaker 5: Dr. Price! While I cowered there in the corner, as
- 19:28Speaker 5: they fought all over the room in the dark, I
- 19:30Speaker 5: had no strength to move, to think, not even to hope.
- 19:33Speaker 5: All the life seemed to have gone dead in my veins.
- 19:40Speaker 5: And then, then it was over. But who, who had won?
- 19:48Speaker 5: In the dark I strained my eyes to see. Doctor? Doctor?
- 19:54Speaker 1: Dr.
- 19:54Speaker 6: Bryce?
- 19:56Speaker 5: Is that you? No, Linda.
- 20:01Speaker 6: It isn't Dr.
- 20:03Speaker 2: Bryce.
- 20:04Speaker 6: It's... It's I. John Taylor.
- 20:08Speaker 2: John Taylor.
- 20:10Speaker 5: It was John Taylor standing there at the light switch.
- 20:14Speaker 5: And on the floor lay Dr. Bryce, unconscious, with a
- 20:17Speaker 5: long dash.
- 20:18Speaker 2: In his head. I... I had to hit him with a...
- 20:22Speaker 2: a water pitcher.
- 20:24Speaker 5: My eyes swung back to Dr. Bryce. And I saw
- 20:27Speaker 5: the knife still gripped in his right hand.
- 20:30Speaker 2: That's Hartley, Linda.
- 20:31Speaker 6: What?
- 20:32Speaker 2: Lee Hartley, the killer.
- 20:34Speaker 5: It... it was he who came in here with the knife? Right.
- 20:39Speaker 2: I was down in the cellar just now.
- 20:41Speaker 8: The real Dr. Bryce is down there, dead. This guy
- 20:45Speaker 8: posed as Bryce when we came to the house.
- 20:48Speaker 5: Oh, then you... You're not Hartley.
- 20:54Speaker 2: Oh, what a situation.
- 20:56Speaker 8: All the time you thought I was Lee Hartley, and
- 20:58Speaker 8: I thought you were Helen Hearn, on account of your
- 21:01Speaker 8: red hair.
- 21:02Speaker 5: Oh, but the body of that red-haired woman.
- 21:05Speaker 2: That's Helen Hearn.
- 21:07Speaker 8: This guy must have killed her back at the service
- 21:09Speaker 8: station and stuffed her body in my trunk compartment while
- 21:12Speaker 8: I was inside.
- 21:13Speaker 5: That all happened last summer. In time, I think I'll
- 21:23Speaker 5: manage to forget that night of terror. But it won't
- 21:26Speaker 5: be soon. Sometimes in the night I dream that I
- 21:30Speaker 5: see that awful figure with a knife hoised above my throat.
- 21:34Speaker 5: And I... I wake up screaming. But then John takes
- 21:39Speaker 5: me in his arms and holds me tight and tells
- 21:42Speaker 5: me that everything is all right. You see, I'm Mrs.
- 21:47Speaker 5: John Taylor now.
- 21:58Speaker 4: Well, what do you know? A happy ending. As for Mr. Hartley,
- 22:03Speaker 4: that pleasant killer, he got what he deserved.
- 22:07Speaker 3: Some people never know when they're well off. He should
- 22:09Speaker 3: have stayed in jail. Where they never raise your rent.
- 22:12Speaker 3: Where they make no charge for meals. Or for electric current.
- 22:22Speaker 3: You see, when you're in jail, everything is free.
- 22:25Speaker 4: Except you.
- 22:27Speaker 6: Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
- 22:36Speaker 2: Well, friends, it's time once again to close that creaking door.
- 22:40Speaker 3: Until next week at this same time when we'll be
- 22:42Speaker 3: back with a little hunk of horror.
- 22:47Speaker 2: You'll be sure to listen, won't you?
- 22:49Speaker 4: Until next week, then. Good night. Pleasant dreams.
