- 0:00Hello and welcome back to the Letterbox podcast.
- 0:03I'm Lucy. And this is a place where people
- 0:06share letters about the people, places, memories or moments that
- 0:12really matter to them. Today's is a really, really
- 0:17lovely letter and it comes from her Jara.
- 0:20She is a writer, poet and author based in Sri Lanka.
- 0:26She's written this letter to her friend Derwan, and she said she
- 0:29wanted to use her name because she really deserves the
- 0:32recognition for the impact she's had on her Jahara's life before.
- 0:39I read you this incredible letter of love and friendship.
- 0:42Whether this is your first time listening to the Letterbox
- 0:46podcast or perhaps you've been here from the beginning, if you
- 0:49have not yet pressed the follow button, I really would love for
- 0:53you to do it right now before the letter begins because it is
- 0:57simply the best way that you can support the podcast, help me
- 1:02keep it going and to send these letters all around the world.
- 1:09So here it is, her Jarez letter about how she found someone
- 1:14worth loving. Dear Dylan, I love who I am when
- 1:24I love people. It's a strange thing to say,
- 1:28especially for a girl who has the anger of a flash flood, the
- 1:33kind of dry, heavy heat where a single spark of fire can burn
- 1:38down an entire forest. Her mind constantly revolves
- 1:43around irritation, the sharp annoyance when people walk too
- 1:48slowly in front of you, or the sudden rage that erupts when
- 1:53someone tries to correct you on something you are already doing
- 1:56perfectly. It is an exhausting, burning
- 2:02storm, leaving behind a heavy ash that forces me to live with
- 2:06guilt every passing minute. This is me.
- 2:12That's known to me. Not a lot of people enjoy this
- 2:15essence, and honestly, neither do I.
- 2:21But there is someone else hidden underneath this ruthless cover,
- 2:27the version that many fail to discover even after nearing the
- 2:32edge of discovery, failing to unravel it and finding
- 2:35themselves at the brink of realisation.
- 2:40There is a softer version of me that you have to earn, one that
- 2:44only very few ever get to see. I am my favourite version of
- 2:52myself when I care deeply. A heart that loves creates a
- 2:59version of you that's worth keeping.
- 3:02Love, you see, diminished the resentful version I had of
- 3:07myself. Instead, it created an awakening
- 3:12gentleness I didn't know I possessed.
- 3:15Being someone who deeply adores and yearns for genuine
- 3:19friendships, relationships, just anything platonic that gives a
- 3:24pure connection between two souls who want nothing but
- 3:28absolute goodness for each other.
- 3:33When life sings a lullaby to put you to sleep so that you wake up
- 3:37gazing into a set of eyes that makes everything shift.
- 3:42That's when you realise that some souls sharing the same blue
- 3:47world and swift breath is enough to make the air around you feel
- 3:51safer, calmer. People like them.
- 3:57The ones who make my heart one of love bring out a deeply
- 4:03creative side of me. A gentle wind hitting a leaf
- 4:09could too, but the creativity love brings out is physical.
- 4:13It's the kind where I sit down for hours, completely lost in
- 4:18thought, thinking of everything they love and everything that
- 4:22might make them love me a little more.
- 4:25Suddenly my world is filled with both and pretty pink ribbons.
- 4:31Letters dance across the pages while my mind turns into a
- 4:35beautiful chaotic mess trying to find a delicate, handmade
- 4:39creativity I never knew I had. I love when people do that, when
- 4:46they unknowingly pull a version of me out into the light, a
- 4:52beautiful side of myself I didn't know existed within me.
- 4:58I have come to cherish the way how certain people coax the
- 5:02physical creativity out of me, transforming quiet afternoons
- 5:07into hours spent measuring, cutting, and shaping details
- 5:11just for them. After all, handmade gifts are
- 5:16the truest language. My love speaks to the heart that
- 5:24taught mine what love truly means, revealing the rare beauty
- 5:29of a platonic bond, what it genuinely feels like to give
- 5:33entirely with eyes closed and to be softly held hand in hand in
- 5:39return. Making the writer in me love the
- 5:43singer in you. Though the day that celebrates
- 5:48your existence still lies far away in September, by the time
- 5:53measured for the slow gathering of love, there is a deep quiet
- 5:57yearning to show the boundless love deserved.
- 6:00And I hope that such love can be given from me for it to be my
- 6:05hands and mine alone that give to you.
- 6:08For my heart already sits with you from afar.
- 6:12In the distance, I catch my lips forming a curve, sitting under
- 6:19the sun basked dusk, tracing the delicate trail of the words 18
- 6:26reasons why I love you. For an 18th birthday, when
- 6:31clarity takes over me, I love you for making me love me.
- 6:46Hi Jared, thank you so much for sharing such a lovely, lovely
- 6:51letter reminding us that friendship really is every bit
- 6:54as important as any romance. And I've got to say, I'm so glad
- 7:01that you have found each other. If today's letter inspired you
- 7:07to maybe write one of your own, remember it can be about
- 7:10absolutely anything. And although so many of these
- 7:14letters are beautifully written, there is no requirement for
- 7:19that. As long as it's true, as long as
- 7:23it means something to you, then I would love to read it.
- 7:28You can find the e-mail in the show notes though, so drop me a
- 7:30message anytime. Sending you all so much love.
