- 0:00Speaker 1: We're back with Jason Candle, the UConn football coach. Huskies
- 0:03Speaker 1: face UMass Friday night at the Rent. We'll start our
- 0:07Speaker 1: coverage at 4 o'clock. Network coverage starts at 5.30. But
- 0:09Speaker 1: we're going to talk to Coach here. A little bit
- 0:12Speaker 1: of big topic stuff in college football. We try to
- 0:15Speaker 1: do this every week. Jason, this 2014 playoff thing now
- 0:20Speaker 1: looks like it's going to be reality in 2027. To me,
- 0:25Speaker 1: that waters down the whole deal. Everybody's in. What's your
- 0:29Speaker 1: thought on that initially? I know it is maybe not
- 0:31Speaker 1: in the front of your mind, obviously, but you're, you're
- 0:33Speaker 1: a college football coach. You're watching this stuff. Yeah.
- 0:37Speaker 2: I mean, look, landscape of college football is changing. It's
- 0:41Speaker 2: a different time. It's not, you know, traditionalists are upset.
- 0:45Speaker 2: I'm a traditionalist as well. I like, you know, the
- 0:48Speaker 2: way it was in a lot of things. I can
- 0:50Speaker 2: say that as it pertains to many different avenues here,
- 0:54Speaker 2: but it's different, it's changing. You either adapt and figure
- 0:58Speaker 2: it out or you get passed by. Whatever the rules
- 1:01Speaker 2: of engagement are for us here at Connecticut, you know,
- 1:03Speaker 2: tell us what we got to do, how we got
- 1:05Speaker 2: to do it. We're going to do it to the
- 1:06Speaker 2: best of our ability, you know, and go try to
- 1:08Speaker 2: fight to be one of the 24 teams. That's ultimately
- 1:10Speaker 2: going to be the goal. So whether it's 12, 24, 48, 108,
- 1:15Speaker 2: don't care. You try to get in the dance and
- 1:16Speaker 2: try to get there and get your team there. And,
- 1:18Speaker 2: you know, there's a lot of work that goes into
- 1:19Speaker 2: that and a lot of preparation to even be in
- 1:22Speaker 2: that conversation. That's what we're fighting hard to do right now.
- 1:25Speaker 1: Are you putting another idea out there?
- 1:26Speaker 2: 48? We're going to 79.
- 1:29Speaker 1: I don't know how many basketball everyone's in. What's going on?
- 1:33Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean, it's a, it's a, you know, it
- 1:38Speaker 2: always comes back to, I mean, you know what it
- 1:40Speaker 2: comes back to. I mean, you know, money's the answer.
- 1:43Speaker 2: What's the question, right?
- 1:44Speaker 1: Yeah, right. It really is.
- 1:46Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:47Speaker 1: This weekend, obviously you, So on Saturday, did you watch football?
- 1:53Speaker 1: I was watching. I just wrote down all the games
- 1:56Speaker 1: I watched. And there were like over 10 games that
- 1:58Speaker 1: I actually watched parts of. And I don't have time
- 2:02Speaker 1: to go through them all. But what did you do
- 2:04Speaker 1: on Saturday?
- 2:06Speaker 2: Well, early morning of UMass prep. Watched a little bit
- 2:13Speaker 2: of Ohio State and Indiana. And then went and watched
- 2:17Speaker 2: the West Hartford flag football game. houston texans team play
- 2:22Speaker 2: and get a good win there um my son's team
- 2:26Speaker 2: and then i got back and was able to catch
- 2:27Speaker 2: a little bit of uh auburn and georgia penn state
- 2:30Speaker 2: and michigan so you know a lot of you know
- 2:34Speaker 2: college football coach is never sitting around doing anything and
- 2:37Speaker 2: sitting on the couch he's he's constantly thinking about what
- 2:39Speaker 2: he's got to do next for his team yet trying
- 2:41Speaker 2: to make sure you you tune in so you're in
- 2:44Speaker 2: you see some other teams what they're doing well and
- 2:46Speaker 2: what they're maybe the mistakes they're making and try to
- 2:50Speaker 2: find teaching moments for your guys. But yeah, I mean,
- 2:53Speaker 2: you know, we're, we're into true game week, you know,
- 2:55Speaker 2: we're seven days out yesterday. So we're, our focus is
- 2:58Speaker 2: on UMass and, but I did get a chance to
- 2:59Speaker 2: catch a little bit of, you know, some of those games.
- 3:02Speaker 1: How about the gadget play BYU Notre Dame? I mean,
- 3:05Speaker 1: there were a couple of them that, that were kind
- 3:07Speaker 1: of sneaky good. I thought sometimes you, do you ever
- 3:10Speaker 1: pick up something like that watching?
- 3:12Speaker 2: I mean, you probably all of it. Come on. Yeah. Always.
- 3:14Speaker 2: I mean, always, you always, I mean, we just, you
- 3:16Speaker 2: have so much access to the all 22 film that
- 3:19Speaker 2: you can, There's billions of ideas that fit or that
- 3:23Speaker 2: are out there. The real challenge is, is can you
- 3:25Speaker 2: find ones that fit what you do and the personnel
- 3:28Speaker 2: that you have? And I think, you know, that's what
- 3:31Speaker 2: really good coaching is, is being able to find key
- 3:33Speaker 2: things to put your players in a position where they
- 3:35Speaker 2: can be successful. And it's not what I know or
- 3:37Speaker 2: what our coaches know. It's what our players can go execute. Yep.
- 3:40Speaker 1: All right, Coach, we appreciate it. Friday night, let's get
- 3:43Speaker 1: under the lights and get some excitement going and get
- 3:45Speaker 1: to four and three. That would be a good step forward,
- 3:47Speaker 1: as you say. Strong schedule coming up in these last
- 3:50Speaker 1: six games.
- 3:52Speaker 2: Appreciate it. Go Huskies.
- 3:53Speaker 1: All right, that's Jason Candle coming up. Shamar Porter and
- 3:56Speaker 1: Tajay Mullix. We continue our coverage of UConn football here
- 4:00Speaker 1: on Learfield.
