- 0:33I'm so drunk. Welcome back to a hamster with a
- 0:42blunt. Penknife the Doctor Who country
- 0:43podcast. I'm sorry.
- 0:45And I'm back with Joe today. Hello, talking about part four
- 0:50of the Aztecs. So this is just after the half
- 0:54way point of season 1 of Doctor Who, that's right.
- 0:58What is your favorite story of the first season?
- 1:02Oh my god. Dad.
- 1:03What you did well, there he improvised I question my
- 1:08favorite story of the first He's and is probably Marco Polo,
- 1:13okay? I think Marco Polo.
- 1:20Seven episodes. It has the chance to tell like
- 1:23this sweeping epic and it really is.
- 1:27And they go to all the different location.
- 1:28That's a bit. I'm going to go for flexi on you
- 1:31now. Okay.
- 1:32A B C Series 13. We meet those characters at the
- 1:35beginning of those seven weeks, yeah, go on a journey with those
- 1:38guest characters, we get to know them really well.
- 1:41The tennis table, show it to be look Sumptuous, doesn't it?
- 1:44That like the lighting is particularly strong, there's a
- 1:47sequence in the singing. Yes, that looks and the sound
- 1:52design, and everything looks amazing nothing.
- 1:56So I think probably Marco, Polo is the best story.
- 2:00My favorite story of season 13. The Daleks mmm-hmm, because I
- 2:07think the Daleks has apart from that one episode where they jump
- 2:11over that fucking rock. That's one level.
- 2:14Five minutes of coming over apart from that.
- 2:18We have coming over, it's time. I think yes scary creation at
- 2:22his best as ferric. It's traumatic, it has like a
- 2:25moral dilemma in it. I yeah, I think it's really,
- 2:28really strong. So I guess Cy captivated the
- 2:31nation lutely. Yeah.
- 2:32It is nothing else quite like it on television at the time and I
- 2:36think as Steve said in his wonderful commentary was really
- 2:38good. Very popular.
- 2:40I'm very, you know, very popular but we're not here to talk
- 2:43about. Even I do not know or an
- 2:46unearthly child or my sneaky favor mice.
- 2:49My sneaky. It sort of.
- 2:51Yeah, of course. Have you got any like, weird
- 2:53crashes? Yes.
- 2:55But like my to weird crushes, are Richard ayoade, right?
- 3:00And Robert Webb. Okay.
- 3:02Neither of which I thought about, yeah.
- 3:08Okay. For all the wrong reasons.
- 3:21Yeah, like yeah, it's very intently made but it's
- 3:24incredibly entertaining as brains in jars.
- 3:28They get me hard baby, but like most sneaky love in season one.
- 3:35Don't you? Dare say the sensor is, I'm
- 3:37going to say s rights. Thank you.
- 3:39And people often that I really like the caveman episodes of
- 3:45only two. Yeah, me too.
- 3:46Doctor Who is never as visceral and his dad.
- 3:49Downright dirty and nasty grass. Those episodes ever again, the
- 3:55hysteria and everyone is filthy after that Adventure, I like it.
- 4:00When people laughing that lands on the corpse.
- 4:04Yeah, scream. It's, you know, stay store and
- 4:22Doctor Who Never does anything quite like that ever again?
- 4:25Well, can I sing a song from Calamity Jane at you?
- 4:27Then you kept your secret loves no secrets and me anymore.
- 4:36And now I'm Doctor Who Fuck you.
- 6:03Mexico. When it's a bit of cold
- 6:47important. No Batman.
- 6:51That is he's doing good. now, the professionalism
- 7:31Who is coming in under the? Well, would you believe it?
- 7:35Hey, hi. You know what, right, once a.
- 7:39But now I'm not saying that story actually.
- 7:41Okay, it's one here. Well, no, you've taunted us with
- 7:45Y internalized, as well as well, somebody's house, right?
- 7:48Yeah. And then their overall came.
- 7:51Oh yeah. And I had to LEAP into something
- 7:53very much all of them sir, you know what?
- 7:55Believe in cycling. Nothing else in the man.
- 8:05Sweats. Emotional my life.
- 8:08It's supposed to be a skull. Is that is that it's a
- 8:12decorative representation. It's been pulley systems.
- 8:25I imagine this is you ruining Elton says a Louisville man,
- 8:27says he had to invent a rudimentary pulley system?
- 8:29Yeah it's kind of yeah. Back to this, isn't it?
- 8:54Also, I need to up my game again to next year.
- 8:58Well I mean I mean I'm having a great laugh.
- 9:01Yeah, well that's fun. Hopefully, that is enough for
- 9:03all your listeners out there to get stripping, kind of had to
- 9:06allow the Safeway now, bats with one.
- 9:08Yeah. Right.
- 9:10That is I do like a lot of people that like, the numbers of
- 9:14people listen to. This is impressive.
- 9:16I am. Yeah, I am super impressed with
- 9:19how it's called listenership, but ultimately the joy of this
- 9:24for me, Me isn't the numbers and I think if you ever start
- 9:27looking into numbers for endorsement, you're in a large
- 9:30house solutely. It's how much fun I have doing
- 9:33in the connections I make on the way and if that is an extended
- 9:38to the audience at home, that's amazing love that.
- 9:41But it's the experience of doing it and I've really enjoyed doing
- 9:45this once and there are many different types of commentary
- 9:49that people could do. You can do the really informed
- 9:53coming in with lots of information.
- 9:54Should and all over the behind-the-scenes ones.
- 9:57Like Brendan or even better than ski?
- 9:59Yeah, yeah yep. Coming at it, from the target,
- 10:03but think about it, which is a really interesting way of doing
- 10:06it. You could do it as that is for
- 10:08man. Yep, becomes very well-informed.
- 10:10Yeah, you can do it as the legal case for my Warriors of the deep
- 10:14is particularly good or bad. Well, we all know you're talking
- 10:17about their Jason Miller and you could do it where you're
- 10:21literally just commenting about what's on the screen, but One
- 10:24brings something different. But that's that's the joy of
- 10:28this as well because obviously I mean every single one but every
- 10:32single person that contributes Springs are different time.
- 10:36Yeah. Yeah.
- 10:36The bring themselves don't know. And and everyone has their way
- 10:40of approaching it. Yeah, like is when you're
- 10:43normally on this is so something.
- 10:45Don't you know I love it. When you're on it, I you
- 10:55generally come with a massive love for the show.
- 10:58Yes. And huge Nostalgia, which I
- 11:01think that really appeals to people.
- 11:03Yes, that's but that's basically me.
- 11:07So that's me being me loving. That's why why bring this?
- 11:11Yeah. Yes, I'm here to see you later.
- 11:41Yeah, that's a Fluff in it. Yes, I do think they get away
- 11:45with this laughs so because he's supposed to be nice Charming.
- 11:49Yes. Jason Thompson said the other
- 11:52day, how many times a day to make it like you get a bit of
- 11:55something that you say wrong? Yeah, it happens all the time.
- 11:58Quiet. Yeah.
- 12:01My commentary. So make any sense when I'm
- 12:02talking. What's nice is like all clocks
- 12:11is like the fist is coming in on them, isn't it?
- 12:13Yeah you know they're running out of taught everyone now as
- 12:17realized who they are and yeah I wasn't joking that scene where
- 12:21she says well I would have died. I am not your taxa that is a
- 12:26powerful bit of trouble. That's all.
- 13:01Reviews relevant, events career, and I'm not gonna screw it.
- 13:04I fell off and broke her rape ever seen in my life.
- 13:13They're really working together here.
- 13:14Yes exactly. And that's what's great about
- 13:17this told his team. You know, what happened?
- 13:19Don't you Marco. Polo happened.
- 13:21They went on a massive journey and they had mumps together they
- 13:24had the argument. So that had like the dramatic
- 13:28kind of Crescendo of them not getting on in edge of
- 13:31Destruction. Yeah.
- 13:32Well then followed on with Marco Polo where they go on this kind
- 13:34of long yeah journey together this nose nose keys of marinus
- 13:41then they have a bit of fun Keith Yes, and how yeah what
- 13:44will his couple weeks off when he comes back for those, were
- 13:50the crime. He's so fun.
- 13:55So yeah. Yeah they've had actually in
- 13:58story terms they've had months together.
- 14:02Yeah. Banding together and then you
- 14:04would knew you would find a way to get on the beach together.
- 14:06Yeah. And there could well be there's
- 14:10room for stories between Mariners and this as well.
- 14:14Okay, let's pick them up. Yeah this is and she's taking
- 14:18the gut and yeah. Now he's in trouble so yeah.
- 14:25It's just one more thing to stop them.
- 14:29Getting back to the Tardis. This is the stock not getting
- 14:33back to the targets they were Marco Polo.
- 14:35It's just Marco. Polo was going well yet again
- 14:37in. Yeah I've got the key.
- 14:39Yeah still the key. Now I've made another team back.
- 14:44Yeah in Mariners no incense rust.
- 14:47A lot gets taken off yet in Mariners goes beyond the
- 14:51physical Force for them so they can't get back to it in the
- 14:54dark. Garlic.
- 14:55So they're just stuck in the fluid.
- 14:58Links in the city. Yeah.
- 14:59And then they got to go back. Yeah.
- 15:02That really the only famous prisoners of the tribe of gum.
- 15:10Yeah. In reign of terror, they all
- 15:14just get scattered is right? Yeah.
- 15:17And the taken prisoner also Key Personnel.
- 15:18Yeah. And then the big one in Dalek
- 15:23invasion weapons company Rubble. Week ahead.
- 15:25So, that's the termination for you, but just for a lot of good.
- 15:29Exactly. We'll do that again in just
- 15:31move, the Daleks just stop. I think you an idea to people,
- 15:36oh, and Daniel night that like this.
- 15:38Yes. Hooray time, I can't wait.
- 15:53I think he's back in the, you know, come by car.
- 15:57You could do better. Do you see what this
- 16:01competition? Is that alright here.
- 16:16So we've seen more gentle romance.
- 16:23Yes. It's like, yeah, I would love to
- 16:25see trout and have a romance, you know, like it when he flirts
- 16:28Joshua trees are gonna say. Yeah, he's married.
- 16:33And there's a nice little relationship between him and and
- 16:37Travers, as well as, and Jim a call.
- 16:40When I like, well, I mean, we know, partly and Joe Girardi.
- 16:45Yeah. Maple.
- 17:22That's what we're going to exceptional.
- 17:23Yeah, exactly. Yeah.
- 17:25My name is yeah, that's all of it All Began series.
- 17:37Like that, Michael said that there's more sexual Chemistry
- 17:39Between Chang me and a master, when he takes me to the art or
- 17:43otherwise known as the hot tub. And then we're into new series
- 17:48and they're all, they're all yeah, the whole lot of them come
- 17:52off, its time. They're all bonking.
- 17:56And there is your potted History of Rome and thank you for
- 18:01joining us. No look and then Dan come in and
- 18:36just as the space, Gooseberry aren't you know what?
- 18:38I would find it and fabulous payoff, you know, if in had our
- 18:42last story, they say I love ya more, they have a kiss.
- 18:47Like I think that would be a brilliant pay off that
- 18:50relationship and worth waiting for.
- 18:52Yeah, absolutely. Words a chipmunk be a long game.
- 18:56Oh he has so far wait for the Tardis of the evidence still
- 19:00Yankee with nothing to anyone who is if you've seen the new
- 19:06year, Special by now and that's will be displaced.
- 19:26Off. They went to the price, went to
- 19:36Mexico. Yes.
- 19:37And found the temple. Is this?
- 19:39Yes, it might be foul. Sorry to All You Blue Peter
- 19:47found It's a weird question, Okay, and
- 20:12like half and season 3 didn't, it's really sorry.
- 20:15Select the season one does incredibly well.
- 20:19We are missing someone and six in the 60s.
- 20:22Yeah, exactly. So we've got so what we're
- 20:25missing, seven eight, nine episodes of, however, 40 or 50
- 20:31years. Which really helped.
- 20:41So they went all over the world and so they're just more copies
- 20:45around or even Levine does say doesn't even if you haven't got
- 20:48there that day. Yeah, we have lost all seven
- 20:50positive source of the negatives of the Daleks but I do wonder if
- 20:53he said that for dramatic effect.
- 20:55Yeah. I've been known to want to have
- 20:59an air of drop. Yes.
- 21:01He enjoys using those catalogs on Twitter.
- 21:06But it's amazing that this this season just about all of it is
- 21:13there and that we can watch these stories.
- 21:17We are blessed and in non facetiousness.
- 21:22Yeah I am very grateful indeed save those episodes yeah.
- 21:26Wow. Quite right too.
- 21:28Yeah. Even we're very lucky as fans to
- 21:33have idea of it. Yeah, the I just think the fact,
- 21:37the animation happening. It's yes.
- 21:39Strawberry that they are animating black and white Doctor
- 21:42Who from the 60s. Yeah.
- 21:45From a soundtrack, someone recorded off their Telly is a
- 21:47testament to the popularity of the show.
- 21:50And also, one thing I always find phenomenal and amazing is,
- 21:56as of recording on the 12th of the 12.
- 21:59And she 21, we still have half of the original cast.
- 22:05Yeah. You know, and where the 70s has
- 22:07been. So we've wiped out in a few
- 22:12years where we lost big people to have it and when your muscle
- 22:18who is in his late 90s and still going strong, William Russell
- 22:25did some companion Chronicles for big finish and some early
- 22:28Adventure. Yes.
- 22:30He was extraordinarily good. He really was a, some of my
- 22:34favorite are the rocket men that?
- 22:36Yeah. It's by John Donne, it's just so
- 22:38good and he's the one that's the museum in his head.
- 22:43Just time, is it? Yeah, I love that one.
- 22:47Yeah, yeah, yeah. He's a consummate actor.
- 22:52Yeah. And I don't always remember the,
- 22:57when they brought out the market, Hello t.v. soundtrack
- 23:02and it's a stop them. Really nice evocative speech, at
- 23:05the start about the time, this is the Tardis and these are the
- 23:08time travelers in it and he's just so lovely.
- 23:11It's comforting about yes. Whereas I tell you what, Carolyn
- 23:15for nice, alright Utopia recently in the convention and
- 23:18she still blaming Doctor Who for the deaf career.
- 23:21She's been doing that for loss this year nearly 60 years of.
- 23:24Come on here. Oh yeah.
- 23:35We just generally good Doctor Who we're so lucky.
- 23:39That anyone has lavished any attention on it at all the what
- 23:44was a family show from 1960s made for next to nothing, but
- 23:51the stories that are missing. You've got so many options.
- 23:54You can read the target know where you can listen to the
- 23:56soundtrack with narration. You can watch a reconstruction,
- 23:59you can watch an animation. Now why that's extraordinary,
- 24:05right? And even for the stories where
- 24:07there's six photos, you still get a full reconstruction of
- 24:11that story that people have made an effort to do something to
- 24:14represent it visually. I mean I'm not going to pick her
- 24:18up at story again when my ex-husband called me.
- 24:20What every come but I'll say this, I've never been looked at
- 24:24so whoa, what's goin on? Yeah, yeah yeah it could be
- 24:30honestly, couldn't believe. I was watching still
- 24:32photographs. It's a big reader.
- 24:35Doctor Who fan thing to do. You love something, you love it,
- 24:38unconditionally exactly. Even if it only comes in still
- 24:41something Oh, this fight. Now this fight.
- 24:49Now, this is really good. On the music Duke.
- 25:04Get that pulley. So it's just even speak hero
- 25:13moment. It's like, I can't battle with
- 25:15back on, Footwear on film. I can feel Sarah to getting hot
- 25:18right now, so much look at. Yeah, that's great.
- 25:23Look at the perspective on that because again, we're in the film
- 25:25studio. Of the time would look, that
- 25:38good are kind of some of the best, a bill medication.
- 25:41But but the way behind them, you've got fixed at to sell the
- 25:46Vista suddenly. When I say somebody's got a
- 25:48filmic quality to it, that does look at the temples we were in
- 25:53Mexico. Sorry, we are Corneum because
- 26:02we're on film, they can cut. So it's certainly more Dynamic
- 26:07and faster and you realize it hits the the she is proper
- 26:10funds. Just fall off the edge so you
- 26:16knock him over. That's me.
- 26:18Yeah. Well that was a very
- 26:20intimidating. I think there is some story of
- 26:26the director not being so happy with that, because there wasn't
- 26:29enough depth to get him falling very fast.
- 26:32It just looks like he's done a forward roll and a couple of
- 26:35foot. Yeah, so you don't get the
- 26:38purse. Palace are the body falling down
- 26:40around rabbit over there. Is opening into that too.
- 26:54Yeah, if we go, I really love this sequence in the area.
- 26:58Well, first of all, I love the fact that he does murder
- 27:01somebody. Yeah.
- 27:01Because he does a hell not made. They made an impact on one man.
- 27:05But on the society, nothing has changed.
- 27:08No. And it will be exactly where it
- 27:10was. That's the lesson though, isn't
- 27:12it? Yeah, Oh, that's lovely.
- 27:16That's done. We still have that is a very
- 27:21rudimentary of Animation, but if it sells it enough, Matt.
- 27:32Perfect. Sacrifice be made, hahaha.
- 27:40They same so where he says? Yeah you were destined to fail.
- 27:45Yeah. And you realize the impact this
- 27:47story has had on both and because she's affected all up
- 27:50and she's had a friendship with him.
- 27:52Yeah, I can make her as effective him.
- 27:54Yeah. Because he leaves the brooch and
- 27:55then he comes back and fix it up.
- 27:58I always thought was the most touching the new adventures
- 28:00where the doctor finds it, and things it to his his.
- 28:04Yeah. That moment be quite touching.
- 28:14At least you have one man. Look at his little smile there.
- 28:19It's not just loud. These people don't ya just love
- 28:22hanging with them. Okay, horrible here he does it
- 28:25all in the looks and it's that fat just a good actor.
- 28:30Yeah. He doesn't need dialogues.
- 28:34No fact. It's just that.
- 28:39But crazy that could be worse. Hang on eBay.
- 29:00This is very nicely lit. This is the smell room.
- 29:03Yeah, the my room So is this from the sensor?
- 29:07I so they actually erected the Tardis just to refer Richard,
- 29:10the toilet is just to do this as you know, if this is like we're
- 29:13going to fit in there first episode where the Tardis, but
- 29:16vast. Yeah, this is one more and the
- 29:18doors and yeah, not much at all. Let's take a look.
- 29:22Yeah, or inside. By this point, it was still so
- 29:29chlorine, it always is exciting. Are we going?
- 29:32But at this point, you know, right in the beginning of the
- 29:33series? I will.
- 29:34Where the hell are we now? Yeah.
- 29:37Okay. So I have a question for you.
- 29:45Okay, my last question for you today, right?
- 29:49Can you name you can on the strength of that commentary,
- 29:53three things to recommend the Aztecs good.
- 29:57I can't very patient. Listenership Jaclyn Hill of
- 30:02course absolutely top at the height of her powers and just a
- 30:07really really stunning performance in this.
- 30:10She gets so much to do and she sells it.
- 30:13She sees it and she loved you get how can you not be with her
- 30:18all the way through that? You know that lets.
- 30:21Yeah she's that's why mr. Ripping number two, I'm going to
- 30:25go with Will William Hartnell because again, Ate those things
- 30:32with Barbara wouldn't be half the scenes without William
- 30:36Hartnell. Batting the dialogue back at her
- 30:40and just that by play and the chemistry between them is is
- 30:45fantastic. It's engaged and he gets a gate
- 30:47and he gets a comedy. SOB subplot is while Barbara is
- 30:51doing that a syrupy stuff. Yeah.
- 30:53So it's a really nice work for the doctor in this one and
- 30:58phone. Number three, I'm going to go
- 31:00with Barry new Bri out his beautiful sets.
- 31:02He's done another great historical.
- 31:05He's yeah, he's terribly underrated.
- 31:08I'm glad More free more. Oh okay yeah shh potential you
- 31:12pay him. So I'm going to say the
- 31:13direction of John Crockett. Yep.
- 31:15Very stylish. Yet verging on Dynamic for the
- 31:20time. Yeah, although we know nothing
- 31:22about John Crockett, so so at us, please there's through the
- 31:26music music, I don't know. Thank you very much.
- 31:31Rodney been who directed Arc in space.
- 31:33Not the music is Is very memorable yet and number three.
- 31:45I'm going to say all of the, the scenes between the first doctor
- 31:50and come a cow. Yeah.
- 31:52And I genuinely think even though that is a company
- 31:56subplot, that's the best of this story, it there.
- 31:59So Charming, they're so warm. And you see another side, the
- 32:03harbor where you've never seen before.
- 32:06While side, we did it. We somehow think that we did
- 32:10next. Well, we keep talking about
- 32:13doing As in areas that we've not talked about so far as right.
- 32:16So, we have got many left, no, no.
- 32:18But I don't want. You do know where we are going
- 32:23to skip to the Peter Capaldi ERA, with Fraser Gregory legal
- 32:28time. Talk about an icon of
- 32:31literature. Real person knows, baby.
