- 0:04Speaker 1: Hello, creeps.
- 0:11Speaker 2: It's me, the Crypt Keeper.
- 0:13Speaker 3: And you're listening to Movie Meltdown, the greatest movie geek
- 0:17Speaker 3: show on Earth.
- 0:18Speaker 4: Ha.
- 0:20Speaker 5: Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
- 0:34Speaker 4: Good evening.
- 0:36Speaker 2: The following feature has been rated R by the Motion
- 0:39Speaker 2: Picture Association of America. It is intended for mature audiences
- 0:43Speaker 2: and parental discretion is advised. Our nuclear reactor pumping out
- 0:48Speaker 2: one million kilowatts of power.
- 1:16Speaker 6: In the containment chamber.
- 1:17Speaker 7: To your citizens, we have a movie meltdown.
- 1:21Speaker 8: You have been a participant in the biggest interdimensional cross-rip
- 1:23Speaker 8: since the Tunguska blast of 1909.
- 1:26Speaker 9: Sounds great.
- 1:44Speaker 1: Happy Halloween and welcome to Movie Meltdown I'm Brian, and
- 1:48Speaker 1: this episode, we're bringing you something a little different. I
- 1:51Speaker 1: love in the middle of any episode when we just
- 1:54Speaker 1: happen upon an amazing moment or story that we didn't
- 1:58Speaker 1: really even plan on.
- 1:59Speaker 7: It just happens.
- 2:01Speaker 1: To me, it's when our conversational style is most impressive. Well,
- 2:05Speaker 1: this episode, we have just that. So when we were
- 2:08Speaker 1: recording our last episode on William Girdler, we sat down
- 2:11Speaker 1: at our favorite local movie theater here, And as I
- 2:14Speaker 1: mentioned it last time, I described it as a spooky
- 2:17Speaker 1: movie theater. As it turns out, I was more right
- 2:19Speaker 1: than even I realized. As Dave and Bo went on
- 2:22Speaker 1: to tell us not just one, but many spooky stories
- 2:25Speaker 1: centered around the very movie theater we're recording in. Involving
- 2:30Speaker 1: both questionable supernatural beings, as well as some pretty creepy individuals.
- 2:35Speaker 1: All of which seem like a fun way to round
- 2:37Speaker 1: out this year's trilogy of Halloween-themed episodes. So we'll take
- 2:41Speaker 1: a quick break here, and when we come back, we'll
- 2:43Speaker 1: be in the theater, and we'll head right back into
- 2:46Speaker 1: the stories. Again, the cast on hand for this session
- 2:49Speaker 1: is myself, Dave, Beau, Fred, Marlena, and Ben. So settle
- 2:55Speaker 1: in and join us for Movie Meltdown's Spooky Theater Stories.
- 2:58Speaker 5: Spooky Theater Stories.
- 3:13Speaker 10: Now gather round while I elucidate on what happens outside
- 3:18Speaker 10: when it gets late. Long about midnight the ghosts and
- 3:22Speaker 10: banshees get together.
- 3:24Speaker 11: For their nightly jamborees. There's ghosts with horns and saucer eyes,
- 3:30Speaker 11: and some with.
- 3:30Speaker 12: Fangs about this size.
- 3:32Speaker 10: Some short and fat, some tall and thin, and some
- 3:36Speaker 10: don't even bother to wear their skin. Oh, I'm telling you, brother,
- 3:41Speaker 10: it's a frightful sight to see what goes on in
- 3:44Speaker 10: the night.
- 3:51Speaker 12: When the spooks have a midnight jamboree, they break it
- 4:02Speaker 12: up with fiendish glee. Ghosts are bad, but the one
- 4:06Speaker 12: that's cursed is the headless horseman. He's the worst when
- 4:11Speaker 12: he goes a-jogging across the land. Holding a noggin in
- 4:16Speaker 12: his hand.
- 4:17Speaker 11: Demons take one look and groan.
- 4:20Speaker 12: And hit the road for parts unknown. And there's no
- 4:24Speaker 12: wreath like a soup to spurn.
- 4:29Speaker 11: There's a deserted theater down by the pier. And if
- 4:32Speaker 11: you value your life, you won't go there. For up
- 4:35Speaker 11: in the balcony and down every row, a killer with
- 4:37Speaker 11: a knife roams ready to strike in the Flesh and
- 4:41Speaker 11: Blood Show. They were young and beautiful actors and actresses,
- 4:46Speaker 11: but little did they know they would meet a deadly
- 4:48Speaker 11: fate in the Flesh and Blood show. Ah, those young
- 4:53Speaker 11: people of Shakespeare and love, they thought they knew all
- 4:56Speaker 11: there was to know, but behind the scenes a killer
- 4:59Speaker 11: awaited them in the Flesh and Blood show. So you
- 5:03Speaker 11: brave and bold moviegoers, listen to me when I tell
- 5:06Speaker 11: you what you ought to know, that the most chilling
- 5:08Speaker 11: experience of your life will occur when you see The
- 5:12Speaker 11: Flesh and Blood Show. The Flesh and Blood Show, brought
- 5:17Speaker 11: to you by EVI, in color, rated R.
- 5:22Speaker 13: We're a show that is ostensibly about horror. Booby bouncing
- 5:28Speaker 13: from the running.
- 5:29Speaker 6: That monkey was Benson. He had sex with Kim Cattrall.
- 5:33Speaker 3: Open your mouth so I can fill the void.
- 5:35Speaker 6: Rats are gross.
- 5:37Speaker 3: Far eastern yeti have smaller feet than.
- 5:40Speaker 6: So like what are we supposed to learn from that?
- 5:43Speaker 6: You're like, shit, this is the one with the really
- 5:44Speaker 6: fat guy.
- 5:45Speaker 14: Yeah.
- 5:45Speaker 4: Damn it.
- 5:46Speaker 2: Okay.
- 5:47Speaker 6: They gave each other a Dutch rudder.
- 5:48Speaker 13: It was fine.
- 5:49Speaker 12: Apparently you've never been to makeitandy.com.
- 5:51Speaker 6: Those are flaps, not doors. Woody.
- 5:54Speaker 13: Anyway.
- 5:54Speaker 6: Who's Woody? It's a wiker with a booty.
- 5:57Speaker 15: It looks like Mike's jerking it over there.
- 5:59Speaker 4: I'm going to class it up now.
- 6:01Speaker 15: After that smut.
- 6:03Speaker 6: Shows are most popular by the way they smell. You're
- 6:05Speaker 6: a real black hole right now.
- 6:07Speaker 11: He sure is.
- 6:08Speaker 6: I'd bang him. The horror of unreleased Beach Boys songs.
- 6:10Speaker 13: There you go.
- 6:11Speaker 6: Are you referring to my lady right now?
- 6:12Speaker 12: Nope.
- 6:13Speaker 4: Night of the living.
- 6:16Speaker 12: Podcast.

- 7:00Speaker 4: It's spooky. It's eerie.
- 7:05Speaker 2: It's The Ghost and Mr. Chicken, starring three-time Emmy Award
- 7:09Speaker 2: winner Don Knotts as the world's bravest coward.
- 7:12Speaker 4: I have been called brave. Now let me clarify this.
- 7:16Speaker 9: As you see, I'm a lion with girls, a tiger
- 7:20Speaker 9: with men, and.
- 7:22Speaker 2: I'm just naturally at home in a haunted house. So
- 7:26Speaker 2: what's brave?
- 7:27Speaker 10: How should I know?
- 7:29Speaker 3: What chicken?
- 7:30Speaker 2: Mr.
- 7:30Speaker 4: Chicken to you.
- 7:31Speaker 2: In this motion picture, he starts as a roving reporter.
- 7:34Speaker 2: Now he's a raving reporter trying to solve a murder
- 7:37Speaker 2: mystery in a house of terror. And he'll scare you silly.
- 7:41Speaker 2: Don Knotts in The Ghost and Mr.
- 7:44Speaker 4: Chicken in Technicolor.
- 7:46Speaker 2: And you're a chicken if you missed this movie.
- 8:04Speaker 3: This is PJ Souls, and you are totally listening to
- 8:06Speaker 3: Movie Meltdown.
- 8:07Speaker 5: It's part of your problem.
- 8:22Speaker 16: You know.
- 8:22Speaker 6: You haven't seen enough movies.
- 8:24Speaker 4: All of life's riddles are answered.
- 8:25Speaker 2: In the movies.
- 8:28Speaker 12: And now, on with the show.
- 8:45Speaker 5: Music music Well, you did say, this being the Halloween episode,
- 9:24Speaker 5: this also has a little bit of history.
- 9:25Speaker 4: Did we want to go into the building and some stories? Yeah,
- 9:29Speaker 4: we think the theater's haunted. We pretty much thought it
- 9:33Speaker 4: was haunted since we opened.
- 9:36Speaker 6: Since it is on the grounds of what used to
- 9:38Speaker 6: be an orphanage.
- 9:38Speaker 4: Yeah, it was the German Presbyterian orphanage.
- 9:43Speaker 6: That did actually burn down, did it not?
- 9:45Speaker 4: I think they tore it down.
- 9:46Speaker 6: It was torn down?
- 9:47Speaker 16: Okay.
- 9:47Speaker 8: Yeah, this property was sold sometime around 1959 or 60.
- 9:52Speaker 8: And uh they moved down the street actually brooklawn now
- 9:55Speaker 8: they're still a business and um it sat on this
- 9:59Speaker 8: property there was a the orphanage up closer to the
- 10:02Speaker 8: bartstown road section there was a park back here playground
- 10:06Speaker 8: it was very nice by all reports i looked up
- 10:09Speaker 8: the history it was a very good place we even
- 10:11Speaker 8: used to have a customer who came in here.
- 10:14Speaker 3: I remember the best years of his life an older
- 10:17Speaker 3: man had.
- 10:18Speaker 8: Lived here at the Archimedean and said it was a
- 10:20Speaker 8: great place so no negativity involved with it but there
- 10:24Speaker 8: seems to be some odd association with disturbances here that
- 10:32Speaker 8: two people well I think two people two girls have
- 10:37Speaker 8: seen a figure of a little boy I think it's
- 10:40Speaker 8: three did Bob see a figure had he seen a boy.
- 10:44Speaker 3: I don't think any male, that's the funny, to me,
- 10:46Speaker 3: I want to say the pattern is no male has
- 10:48Speaker 3: ever seen the little boy.
- 10:50Speaker 4: I heard that up at the old Winn-Dixie, which is
- 10:53Speaker 4: now the Value Mart. Well, that's true, yeah.
- 10:57Speaker 6: Yeah, one of the stockers.
- 10:58Speaker 8: Said he saw an identical figure in the back, like,
- 11:02Speaker 8: freezer area when they were actually doing some construction, kind
- 11:05Speaker 8: of disturbing the property.
- 11:08Speaker 4: My niece saw a figure in theater number.
- 11:12Speaker 8: Six at the end, back of the theater here, cleaning
- 11:15Speaker 8: up after a movie, she saw a little boy out
- 11:17Speaker 8: of the corner of her eye.
- 11:18Speaker 4: He was about six or so, had a sort of
- 11:21Speaker 4: a bowl haircut, blonde hair, and was wearing what she
- 11:25Speaker 4: thought were denim overalls.
- 11:27Speaker 8: She saw him in the row, and the credits were rolling,
- 11:30Speaker 8: and she was cleaning up. And she, out of the
- 11:34Speaker 8: corner of her eye, saw him, and then she looked directly,
- 11:36Speaker 8: and he wasn't there. And she actually was living with
- 11:41Speaker 8: us at the time as well, and she came up
- 11:42Speaker 8: and told me about this.
- 11:44Speaker 4: She wasn't really freaked out. She was like, it's just
- 11:45Speaker 4: kind of odd. She thought she saw someone, but there
- 11:49Speaker 4: wasn't anyone there. Then it was maybe two or three
- 11:52Speaker 4: years later.
- 11:53Speaker 17: Another girl who worked here was coming up the aisle
- 11:57Speaker 17: as I was coming into work and was asking the
- 11:59Speaker 17: ticket seller if he had sold a ticket to a
- 12:02Speaker 17: family or to a child to whatever was playing in
- 12:05Speaker 17: number six, which wasn't.
- 12:06Speaker 4: Really a kid's movie at all. And he checked the
- 12:09Speaker 4: and there was no ticket to families or kids.
- 12:12Speaker 8: She had gone in there, and the credits were rolling,
- 12:14Speaker 8: and she'd seen a little boy down in the front
- 12:16Speaker 8: of the theater near the screen running around kind of
- 12:19Speaker 8: playing while living in his own world. And she called
- 12:22Speaker 8: out to him from the aisle, and he did not respond.
- 12:25Speaker 8: And she called out again saying, where are your parents?
- 12:27Speaker 8: And he didn't respond. He was not paying attention to her.
- 12:30Speaker 8: So she walked out and started trying to find this
- 12:31Speaker 8: kid's parents and looked in other theaters, and she walked
- 12:34Speaker 8: back in.
- 12:34Speaker 4: He wasn't there.
- 12:36Speaker 9: That's a really terrible thing to ask a ghost orphan.
- 12:41Speaker 4: She's really insensitive.
- 12:43Speaker 8: So she told me about this, and I'm just starting
- 12:46Speaker 8: to smile, and she tells this tale, and I'm like, well,
- 12:48Speaker 8: I think you've seen the ghost. And I called my
- 12:53Speaker 8: niece up on the cell and said, here, tell Lucy
- 12:55Speaker 8: what you just saw.
- 12:56Speaker 4: It was the same description. I watched Lucy kind of
- 13:00Speaker 4: turn white and start to cry a little bit. There
- 13:03Speaker 4: was a third.
- 13:04Speaker 6: I want to say it was Maddie, I think, or
- 13:07Speaker 6: someone else to where it was after we were closed.
- 13:10Speaker 3: And it was a night that I was working with Bob.
- 13:13Speaker 3: And it's just back in the days when we would
- 13:17Speaker 3: have like two closing ushers or she might have a
- 13:18Speaker 3: concession or something. But basically, Bob and I were talking
- 13:22Speaker 3: and she was trying to get us. She called us
- 13:24Speaker 3: to help find this kid that she thought was lost
- 13:27Speaker 3: in the theater.
- 13:28Speaker 6: And it was down by, like, theater number six.
- 13:31Speaker 3: And Bob and I, of course, started tormenting her and
- 13:33Speaker 3: telling her the Lucy story and the Sarah story and
- 13:36Speaker 3: freaking her out.
- 13:36Speaker 6: But I think that was Maddie.
- 13:38Speaker 4: It could have been, yeah.
- 13:39Speaker 8: I think someone else maybe saw what they thought was
- 13:43Speaker 8: the figure of a kid in the window over here
- 13:45Speaker 8: that overlooks the auditorium.
- 13:47Speaker 4: They saw an outline. And I've never seen anything.
- 13:51Speaker 8: Here, but I have heard a lot of strange things.
- 13:57Speaker 4: Doors slamming. We're in the room with the door slamming
- 14:00Speaker 4: right now. I can do a dramatization. What did it
- 14:03Speaker 4: sound like?
- 14:04Speaker 8: Like two in the morning, like I'm having a conversation
- 14:06Speaker 8: with one of the ushers and a friend of mine,
- 14:08Speaker 8: and there's nobody in the building. Everybody's long gone. You know,
- 14:10Speaker 8: projectionists and everybody. We're in the office next door, and
- 14:14Speaker 8: we heard this very powerful door slam, which means the
- 14:18Speaker 8: door had to be open to begin with, and this
- 14:20Speaker 8: door's never open.
- 14:21Speaker 4: But then we just suddenly heard.
- 14:21Speaker 3: And.
- 14:24Speaker 8: I mean, it shook the pictures on the wall for like,
- 14:28Speaker 8: Someone in the room next door.
- 14:30Speaker 4: We got up and came in here. Nobody.
- 14:33Speaker 8: So I sent them back next door, and I said,
- 14:36Speaker 8: I'm going to slam this door. You tell me if
- 14:37Speaker 8: it's the same sound. It was the exact same noise.
- 14:40Speaker 4: And it was hard. It was a hard slam.
- 14:42Speaker 8: It was not like something that, you know, air conditioning
- 14:45Speaker 8: or the heat coming on could affect the room air.
- 14:48Speaker 4: This was a hard, intentional slam.
- 14:50Speaker 8: And I heard it again, oh, maybe a year and
- 14:53Speaker 8: a half later, up here doing paperwork one night.
- 14:55Speaker 4: And then they heard it downstairs. They could hear it.
- 14:57Speaker 4: The concession is directly under here. They could hear it
- 15:00Speaker 4: down there. It's loud and salient. I came out of
- 15:04Speaker 4: the office one early evening.
- 15:07Speaker 8: It was still daylight out, and the only light comes
- 15:11Speaker 8: in from that front window out there. I had the
- 15:15Speaker 8: cash drawers in my hands, and I walked around the corner,
- 15:17Speaker 8: and I felt like I was going to run into somebody.
- 15:20Speaker 8: It was like a proximity feeling. And it seemed like
- 15:23Speaker 8: someone short. Now, the lights are off, so it's like dark,
- 15:25Speaker 8: but it I could say it was like a shadow
- 15:28Speaker 8: or a silhouette in front of me.
- 15:29Speaker 4: It was somebody short. And I was like, whoa. And
- 15:31Speaker 4: then I stopped, and there was nobody there.
- 15:33Speaker 8: And I looked, and there was just reflections on the wall,
- 15:36Speaker 8: which I couldn't really pinpoint the source. They could have
- 15:39Speaker 8: been bouncing off the platter system out here or what.
- 15:42Speaker 4: But it was weird.
- 15:43Speaker 8: I literally felt like there was somebody in front of
- 15:44Speaker 8: me for a minute. And I thought it was that
- 15:47Speaker 8: we had a kid working here at the time. It
- 15:49Speaker 8: was a boy who was pretty short.
- 15:51Speaker 6: I remember that day when.
- 15:53Speaker 3: that happened you'd drawn like a picture of like just
- 15:56Speaker 3: the weird amorphous blob that you almost stumbled.
- 15:59Speaker 4: Into the spinning thing you.
- 16:01Speaker 3: Know and you were like have you seen this I
- 16:02Speaker 3: was like no you're making posters have you seen this blob.
- 16:08Speaker 8: But uh that was that was the only visual kind
- 16:10Speaker 8: of thing that happened I can't say what it was
- 16:13Speaker 8: the irony is that that kid is now deceased who
- 16:16Speaker 8: I thought I was about to run into he died
- 16:18Speaker 8: a few years later so it was a time slip
- 16:22Speaker 8: but uh Quite possibly.
- 16:24Speaker 4: A lot of odd things over the years, noises.
- 16:26Speaker 8: You know, Bo's had some very good experiences.
- 16:30Speaker 3: When I was student teaching, I was student teaching up
- 16:34Speaker 3: at Atherton, and so I would get off here at
- 16:37Speaker 3: like 1 in the morning, and that was when I
- 16:39Speaker 3: was still living at home, so instead of going home,
- 16:41Speaker 3: I would just sleep here.
- 16:42Speaker 6: And I would do that probably about three to four
- 16:46Speaker 6: nights a week.
- 16:47Speaker 3: It was pretty common for me just to sleep here
- 16:49Speaker 3: in a theater and take a whore's bath in the
- 16:51Speaker 3: break room sink in the morning. But anyway, no, for
- 16:57Speaker 3: actually where we're in right now is where I slept
- 16:59Speaker 3: a lot. I used to, in that room right there,
- 17:02Speaker 3: I used to keep an inflatable mattress and I would
- 17:04Speaker 3: just blow it up and sleep in here. Until we
- 17:09Speaker 3: got the couch that, we ended up having the couch
- 17:12Speaker 3: up here for a while. Yeah. But, no, there was
- 17:16Speaker 3: more than once where I would come in here and
- 17:19Speaker 3: it would be late at night and there was no
- 17:20Speaker 3: consistency to it. I never noticed it was a certain
- 17:22Speaker 3: day of the week or a certain time or anything
- 17:23Speaker 3: like that. But on more than one occasion, after I'd
- 17:28Speaker 3: shut the door and was getting ready to go to bed,
- 17:32Speaker 3: hearing a girl's voice singing. And the couple times I
- 17:36Speaker 3: heard it, I mean, for me it seemed weird to
- 17:39Speaker 3: have the door open and go to sleep.
- 17:41Speaker 6: The theater is kind of spooky when you're here alone.
- 17:44Speaker 3: And it sounded like it started way at the back
- 17:46Speaker 3: of the projection booth and was just making its way forward,
- 17:50Speaker 3: and I would listen to it.
- 17:51Speaker 6: Couldn't make out any kind of.
- 17:52Speaker 3: Particular lyrics or even set melody per se, but it
- 17:57Speaker 3: was like a young girl singing, and it would just
- 17:59Speaker 3: go right up to the other side of the door
- 18:02Speaker 3: and then just stop. And it's like more than once,
- 18:05Speaker 3: I was like, okay, well, just open it up. There's
- 18:07Speaker 3: nothing there, and I'll be fine. But it's like I
- 18:09Speaker 3: could never get the balls up to open the door.
- 18:13Speaker 3: Because they're just so weird, and it's not something to where,
- 18:16Speaker 3: like right now we're hearing background audio because I've got
- 18:18Speaker 3: one of the monitors on for the projector. It's like,
- 18:20Speaker 3: you know, projectors are off, music's off, TVs are off.
- 18:23Speaker 6: It's not any of that. It was just odd.
- 18:26Speaker 3: And the banging is common too because, I mean, there
- 18:32Speaker 3: have been several times with that, I can't think, but,
- 18:33Speaker 3: you know, you've got a distinctive one, the most distinctive
- 18:36Speaker 3: one to me.
- 18:36Speaker 6: I was in the office over.
- 18:38Speaker 3: There about the same time at night, about 2 in
- 18:40Speaker 3: the morning after closing at midnight, And there's just this
- 18:45Speaker 3: large bang on this wall that runs all.
- 18:48Speaker 4: The way up into the other office.
- 18:50Speaker 3: On the other side of this wall, there's, basically it's
- 18:54Speaker 3: about yay wide, and then the projectors for theaters one
- 18:57Speaker 3: and two are right over here.
- 18:59Speaker 6: And it almost sounded like, you know, somebody ran a
- 19:01Speaker 6: car into the other side of it.
- 19:02Speaker 3: I mean, it was a huge impact, and it knocked
- 19:06Speaker 3: a couple of the clipboards off the shelf when we
- 19:07Speaker 3: used to keep them there. And I jumped around, I
- 19:09Speaker 3: was like, it sounded like something, maybe I thought one
- 19:12Speaker 3: of the speaker towers or something had fallen over. So
- 19:15Speaker 3: I got up and went around to the other side
- 19:16Speaker 3: of the wall and I didn't see anything. It was
- 19:18Speaker 3: just the weirdest slam I'd ever heard. And it was
- 19:24Speaker 3: more than one occasion, too, to where back when I
- 19:27Speaker 3: was still sleeping here, and those were the nights where
- 19:31Speaker 3: if something creepy would happen, a lot of times I
- 19:33Speaker 3: would actually just leave and go home. But then I
- 19:36Speaker 3: would still come back the next night. So, like, I
- 19:41Speaker 3: would flip out the lights in the booth and I
- 19:44Speaker 3: would have to walk down about halfway into the booth
- 19:47Speaker 3: in complete dark because the light switch is really far
- 19:49Speaker 3: away from me.
- 19:50Speaker 6: Where the couch was.
- 19:51Speaker 3: And more than once, I flipped out the lights, and
- 19:53Speaker 3: I would swear it sounded like footsteps, not just like
- 19:57Speaker 3: slow footsteps, but almost sort of like a hustled walk,
- 20:00Speaker 3: just approaching from up here by projectors one or two
- 20:03Speaker 3: towards me, and I would go and turn on the light,
- 20:05Speaker 3: and they would stop, which really, really freaked me out.
- 20:09Speaker 16: But.
- 20:10Speaker 3: The last time I ever spent the night here was
- 20:12Speaker 3: during that time. And so that would have been 2004.
- 20:16Speaker 3: I haven't spent the night here since because I was
- 20:19Speaker 3: just out on the couch.
- 20:22Speaker 6: And on the verge of going to sleep. And I
- 20:26Speaker 6: heard what could only.
- 20:26Speaker 8: The.
- 20:29Speaker 3: Best way to describe it is if you're ever in
- 20:30Speaker 3: a completely quiet room like this and somebody's going to
- 20:33Speaker 3: sneak up on you, you hear like the distortion of
- 20:36Speaker 3: just the air in the room.
- 20:38Speaker 6: Something kind of moved, almost like you could hear somebody
- 20:40Speaker 6: trying not to make any sound as they walk up. Well,
- 20:43Speaker 6: I was just laying out there, and I started hearing that.
- 20:47Speaker 3: And at first I thought, that's just my imagination, but
- 20:50Speaker 3: then I couldn't tune it out once I'd noticed it.
- 20:54Speaker 3: And it almost sounded like somebody who'd just taken off
- 20:57Speaker 3: their shoes and were just walking quietly in socks on
- 21:00Speaker 3: that floor, just trying to be as quiet as they could,
- 21:02Speaker 3: approaching me. And since I'm laying on the couch, basically
- 21:06Speaker 3: approaching towards, like, where my head is. And at first
- 21:11Speaker 3: I even thought maybe it was, like, a night terror
- 21:13Speaker 3: or something, because I'd read the book The Terror That
- 21:14Speaker 3: Comes in the Night, is that the name of it? So,
- 21:16Speaker 3: I mean, I'd read about night terrors and all that,
- 21:18Speaker 3: and I was, like, methodically checking. I was like, no,
- 21:20Speaker 3: I can still move my hands and feet. There's no, like,
- 21:22Speaker 3: paralysis associated or something. Not that, but I just laid down,
- 21:26Speaker 3: so I couldn't have, like, gone to sleep and woken up,
- 21:28Speaker 3: but it's possible.
- 21:30Speaker 4: But.
- 21:31Speaker 3: You know, I continued to like listen to this and
- 21:33Speaker 3: this point as it gets closer, I just became gripped
- 21:35Speaker 3: with like this completely irrational fear. You know, there was
- 21:39Speaker 3: no way to describe, you know, what it's like to
- 21:44Speaker 3: somebody who hasn't experienced it. But once you experience it,
- 21:46Speaker 3: I mean, it is, it's just this completely irrational fear
- 21:48Speaker 3: comes out of nowhere, very animalistic. And I remember just
- 21:52Speaker 3: like that suddenly kicking in just like complete terror.
- 21:54Speaker 6: And I didn't know why I'm like, I've just psyched
- 21:56Speaker 6: myself out.
- 21:57Speaker 4: Just relax.
- 21:57Speaker 6: It's nothing.
- 21:59Speaker 3: But at the same time, I'd gotten so worked up,
- 22:02Speaker 3: and similar to not wanting to open the door, it's like,
- 22:04Speaker 3: I know if I just open up my eyes, there'll
- 22:06Speaker 3: be nothing there, and I'll be fine. But there was
- 22:07Speaker 3: that fear, like, what if there is something there? At
- 22:10Speaker 3: which point, I had heard the word, and essentially, it
- 22:14Speaker 3: felt like I'm sitting here with my head on the couch,
- 22:16Speaker 3: as if somebody's standing right here. Like, there's the distortion
- 22:20Speaker 3: of the air and that blowing up there. It's like
- 22:21Speaker 3: there's something blocking right here. And I continued to listen,
- 22:25Speaker 3: and then it just continued. also sort of progressed where
- 22:28Speaker 3: I felt like somebody just kind of leaned over and
- 22:30Speaker 3: was just staring at me. And I could even feel
- 22:32Speaker 3: like some sort of like weird warmth coming off of that.
- 22:37Speaker 3: And I just remember just like being completely gripped with terror,
- 22:40Speaker 3: feeling the sensation for the longest time.
- 22:42Speaker 6: And then the next thing I knew it was morning.
- 22:45Speaker 3: But I mean, I haven't spent the night here since then.
- 22:48Speaker 3: I mean, it doesn't even sound like that spooky of
- 22:50Speaker 3: a story. It almost sounds like a dream or something. But,
- 22:53Speaker 3: you know, the way I looked at it is, I'm
- 22:55Speaker 3: sort of skeptical towards all that stuff, but in theory,
- 22:58Speaker 3: if there is something within the building, I feel like
- 23:02Speaker 3: that would have been its way of telling me that
- 23:03Speaker 3: I'm not welcome to stay here at night, if so.
- 23:06Speaker 3: So that's why I haven't done so since. But pretty
- 23:10Speaker 3: much everything, with the bangs on the wall, maybe that's
- 23:13Speaker 3: the building settling, with the voices, that could be imagination,
- 23:16Speaker 3: same with that out there.
- 23:17Speaker 6: The only thing that I couldn't.
- 23:20Speaker 3: Dismiss as imagination or anything else like that was I
- 23:23Speaker 3: saw a chair, kind of like these, just completely rolling
- 23:25Speaker 3: by itself. And that was one night where I was here.
- 23:28Speaker 3: It was after we'd closed. It was probably about one
- 23:31Speaker 3: in the morning.
- 23:31Speaker 6: So all the projectors were off, and actually the lights
- 23:35Speaker 6: were on to the booth. And as I was sitting there,
- 23:38Speaker 6: I heard this sound. I was like, sounds like a
- 23:40Speaker 6: chair rolling.
- 23:42Speaker 3: And I scooted over to look out the office door,
- 23:44Speaker 3: and then I just see the projectionist chair go rolling
- 23:48Speaker 3: right past the office in that direction. And If you
- 23:53Speaker 3: go out there, I mean, over there, it's a dead end.
- 23:56Speaker 3: So there's nowhere for anybody to go if they push
- 23:59Speaker 3: it past. And I assume somebody was actually trying to
- 24:01Speaker 3: pull a prank on me. But if you push the chair,
- 24:04Speaker 3: there's no way for you to run ahead of the
- 24:07Speaker 3: chair without making noise to where I would hear.
- 24:09Speaker 6: Your footsteps over the chair rolling. And it was, like,
- 24:11Speaker 6: dead quiet anyway.
- 24:13Speaker 3: And not only that, but, you know, once you've pushed
- 24:16Speaker 3: it in that direction, the only way out is to
- 24:19Speaker 3: go that direction. So for it to come that direction
- 24:23Speaker 3: and then me look down there and not see anyone,
- 24:25Speaker 3: it just, for lack of a better word, it just
- 24:27Speaker 3: moved by itself about 50 feet-ish. So that's like out
- 24:34Speaker 3: of all the stories, the only one that I can
- 24:35Speaker 3: just dismiss.
- 24:37Speaker 6: Like to that, there's no logical explanation to it.
- 24:41Speaker 8: There's several people who have heard their name called here.
- 24:47Speaker 4: Sometimes it'll sound like a child's voice or a girl's voice.
- 24:50Speaker 4: Usually it's like a.
- 24:52Speaker 8: Maybe 13, 14-year-old girl. And it'll be your name, but
- 24:57Speaker 8: it'll be really close to your ear. And for me,
- 25:00Speaker 8: it happened a couple times, and it was always downstairs
- 25:03Speaker 8: on a busy night, like a Saturday or something. You
- 25:05Speaker 8: can always say, well, somebody's just talking to somebody else
- 25:07Speaker 8: who happens to have your name. I have a common name, Dave.
- 25:11Speaker 8: But it would be weird. I'd be moving through the crowd,
- 25:13Speaker 8: and then there would be this voice like right here going, Dave.
- 25:16Speaker 8: I think Bo and several other people have heard that
- 25:22Speaker 8: because we're the people who.
- 25:23Speaker 4: Are always here the most, like late at night. We're
- 25:27Speaker 4: doing the most talking and just hanging out here.
- 25:30Speaker 3: We've always wondered if maybe this stuff happens during the day,
- 25:33Speaker 3: but it's just there's so much noise with the movies
- 25:35Speaker 3: going on and people going in and out and all
- 25:37Speaker 3: that stuff to where we just don't notice, and it's
- 25:39Speaker 3: only when the building's quiet that you actually can pick
- 25:41Speaker 3: up on it.
- 25:42Speaker 4: This place is quiet. Do you know the story about
- 25:45Speaker 4: the mural downstairs?
- 25:48Speaker 9: The painting of the silhouettes of the crowd?
- 25:51Speaker 4: Mm-hmm. Mario Muller? Mario Muller, yeah.
- 25:55Speaker 9: It's interesting that it used to be an orphanage because
- 25:58Speaker 9: the story I've heard is that he didn't know who
- 26:00Speaker 9: his parents were, and he's been obsessively painting these, like,
- 26:05Speaker 9: silhouettes of crowds, people walking.
- 26:08Speaker 4: Around the airport.
- 26:11Speaker 8: Yeah, he's at the old walls at the Vogue, back
- 26:14Speaker 8: when Marty first opened the Vogue.
- 26:15Speaker 4: Mario did those pieces.
- 26:16Speaker 9: Yeah, and down at the Kentucky Center, I think they've
- 26:20Speaker 9: got one in that drive-thru.
- 26:21Speaker 4: I used to joke before a lot of this.
- 26:25Speaker 8: Came up, you know, when we started reading odd experiences,
- 26:28Speaker 8: I would joke about the Mid-City Mall before we even knew.
- 26:32Speaker 4: Much about it.
- 26:32Speaker 8: I heard it was an orphanage and I used to say,
- 26:34Speaker 8: I think this place is like a beacon. It's like
- 26:37Speaker 8: people respond to it. It's why so many homeless guys
- 26:40Speaker 8: were always up here. They're always drifting in, you know,
- 26:43Speaker 8: and then people would just come here. And it was
- 26:47Speaker 8: sort of a crazy magnet that remained so.
- 26:50Speaker 9: And there used to be a couple of things along
- 26:53Speaker 9: the street here that were like, I don't know where
- 26:56Speaker 9: you could sell blood or or where you could get
- 26:59Speaker 9: one of those IDs that homeless people have to have
- 27:02Speaker 9: to get a bed and a shelter.
- 27:05Speaker 4: Because I know.
- 27:08Speaker 9: At the gallery, like an art gallery, when I worked there,
- 27:11Speaker 9: it's just like a magnet for insane people. And some
- 27:16Speaker 9: of them are, like, really nice, and I keep up
- 27:19Speaker 9: with still. Like, Mark Anthony Mulligan is, like, a legendary
- 27:23Speaker 9: homeless guy. I sold one of his paintings to.
- 27:28Speaker 9: Ah, I'm forgetting his name now, uh, the guy who
- 27:31Speaker 9: did Hot L Baltimore playwright, Lanford Wilson, when he was
- 27:35Speaker 9: in town. Uh, and he does, he does these great
- 27:39Speaker 9: invented Louisville, they're partly invented, but partly he actually just
- 27:44Speaker 9: remembers Louisville in the 70s, and he knows where everything
- 27:48Speaker 9: was because he rides the bus. Um, and I saw
- 27:52Speaker 9: him like down the street the other day in the corner. Um, But, yeah,
- 27:58Speaker 9: we used to get people who would come in and just,
- 28:03Speaker 9: they were on that parade of craziness that was part
- 28:08Speaker 9: of the community.
- 28:09Speaker 3: I'm trying to think of some of the other regulars
- 28:12Speaker 3: around here. Michael Dean Jagalow used to see for a while.
- 28:15Speaker 6: Oh, yeah, I remember him.
- 28:16Speaker 4: I haven't seen him in years.
- 28:17Speaker 6: Sounds like a rock star's name, don't it? Yeah, it does.
- 28:20Speaker 6: He was always up at.
- 28:21Speaker 4: The pie kitchen. I haven't seen him in decades. Yeah,
- 28:25Speaker 4: Barstow Road is kind of that way.
- 28:27Speaker 8: This place in particular, I had been working here in
- 28:31Speaker 8: one capacity or another in this general block since I
- 28:34Speaker 8: was a teenager.
- 28:35Speaker 4: I worked in the costume place.
- 28:38Speaker 8: Act One was in the big building out here, out front,
- 28:41Speaker 8: and then I worked at the video vault for years.
- 28:45Speaker 4: Yeah, which is the opposite end of the... Yeah, so
- 28:48Speaker 4: I've been, this place is an odd, you know, home
- 28:50Speaker 4: away from home. I think that extends into other realms,
- 28:53Speaker 4: you know, for people. Other dimensions.
- 28:56Speaker 6: It's like there's a hell mouth underneath the building. Some
- 28:59Speaker 6: very Lovecraftian hell mouth. You just find it, you're like, oh,
- 29:02Speaker 6: that's why, there's the hell hole, okay.
- 29:05Speaker 8: And because we run movies, you know, it's a bunch
- 29:08Speaker 8: of alternate realities spinning.
- 29:09Speaker 4: All the time, you know, I think that. That attracts people.
- 29:12Speaker 7: And movies always attract crazy people. Movie theaters, the video stores.
- 29:17Speaker 15: Like, it's always, like, it's such a weird grouping of
- 29:20Speaker 15: people that are attracted to movies.
- 29:22Speaker 16: Well, I think that's, I mean, it probably seems that
- 29:24Speaker 16: way if you work in one of those places. You're like, God,
- 29:27Speaker 16: a lot of crazy people come here. But I think
- 29:28Speaker 16: that's anywhere you work.
- 29:30Speaker 15: Some of it, but there's a very specific, like, that's
- 29:32Speaker 15: the thing. You'll just get, like, because I've heard your
- 29:34Speaker 15: stories from, like, work. And they're just, like, crazy people. But, like,
- 29:38Speaker 15: the people that come into the movie places are... like,
- 29:40Speaker 15: crazy in a, like, laser-accurate way. Like, yeah, they're, like,
- 29:44Speaker 15: they have very specific things that they're into and weird, like,
- 29:51Speaker 15: I don't know. It's just, like, weird little niche areas
- 29:53Speaker 15: that they, like, fall into.
- 29:54Speaker 13: Like, crazy people with a specific hobby.
- 29:56Speaker 3: Well, no, basically, what if you took your crazy people
- 29:59Speaker 3: and then, like, assembled a new crazy person out of
- 30:03Speaker 3: those crazy people, like a Frankenstein crazy person.
- 30:06Speaker 16: Let's just gather your crazy people and my crazy people
- 30:08Speaker 16: and put them against each other.
- 30:10Speaker 4: I mean, the ones that are homeless, nobody will miss.
- 30:12Speaker 6: Have your crazy people call my crazy people.
- 30:15Speaker 13: We could have a dodgeball match to the death.
- 30:17Speaker 6: I think the crazy people that just come to the
- 30:20Speaker 6: movie theater are aliens.
- 30:21Speaker 4: They're not even people. Could be. Case could be made.
- 30:28Speaker 9: I had what I think may be the quintessential Bardstown
- 30:31Speaker 9: Road experience the other day when I tried to find
- 30:35Speaker 9: a date movie for my son and his girlfriend make
- 30:39Speaker 9: sure we had this movie and I thought we did
- 30:41Speaker 9: but I couldn't find it and so I went and
- 30:43Speaker 9: tried to rent it and it was out and I
- 30:45Speaker 9: thought oh wait there's that used CD DVD store across
- 30:50Speaker 9: the street I'll go over there and I go there
- 30:53Speaker 9: And as I'm coming up to it, I see these
- 30:54Speaker 9: signs that say going out of business, everything.
- 30:57Speaker 6: And I'm like, wow, I might get a deal on it.
- 31:01Speaker 9: And I get up to it, and it's like, oh, yeah,
- 31:03Speaker 9: that place went out of business already.
- 31:05Speaker 4: This is a new place going out of business. And that,
- 31:09Speaker 4: to me, that's like, that's Bardstown Road. Yep.
- 31:12Speaker 6: Especially these days.
- 31:14Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 31:14Speaker 9: And then I went home, and I'm like, no, I
- 31:17Speaker 9: have that movie, and I found it. It was in
- 31:20Speaker 9: a mausoleum my son had made as a school project
- 31:23Speaker 9: for Maud Flanders. It was like a Spanish-language Day of
- 31:28Speaker 9: the Dead. He's like, oh, yeah, Maud Flanders died. I'll
- 31:31Speaker 9: make a little mausoleum.
- 31:32Speaker 4: And put in all kinds of things. And that's where
- 31:35Speaker 4: the movie was.
- 31:36Speaker 10: Of course.
- 31:37Speaker 7: Where everyone keeps their movies.
- 31:38Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 31:41Speaker 3: I would say there are spookier stories from the village
- 31:43Speaker 3: than here, just from my time over there.
- 31:46Speaker 6: Just the whole Crawlin' Joe stuff.
- 31:47Speaker 4: Well, that's where the legend of Crawlin' Joe started. Yeah,
- 31:50Speaker 4: I was at the village.
- 31:51Speaker 6: I think it was me and Robert that came up
- 31:53Speaker 6: with the nickname Crawlin.
- 31:54Speaker 4: Joe to refer to it as. And then Crawlin' Joe
- 31:57Speaker 4: eventually materialized over here.
- 32:00Speaker 6: Well, and that's still... How would he have got from there?
- 32:06Speaker 3: Well, there's a fellow that we refer to as the
- 32:08Speaker 3: pantless poker, and we think that the pantless poker would
- 32:10Speaker 3: crawl in Joe's.
- 32:11Speaker 6: Some of the stories interlap, probably.
- 32:14Speaker 8: Among other things.
- 32:15Speaker 3: Yeah, because there was a fellow who would just lay
- 32:17Speaker 3: down on the floor and take his pants off and
- 32:22Speaker 3: touch women's legs like he would reach underneath the seat
- 32:24Speaker 3: and grab their legs and or.
- 32:25Speaker 6: Try to steal money out of their purse.
- 32:28Speaker 4: I think it's and or.
- 32:31Speaker 8: I watched that guy And he would reappear. He was
- 32:35Speaker 8: a skinny little black guy. And his gimmick, and I
- 32:40Speaker 8: think he was crawling Joe, at least some of the time.
- 32:46Speaker 8: He'd take his jacket off and hang it over the
- 32:48Speaker 8: back of his seat. And if you kept an eye
- 32:50Speaker 8: on him, his head would slowly sink.
- 32:52Speaker 4: Out of sight. Because he was so thin, he would
- 32:56Speaker 4: slide down on the floor in the dark. And then
- 32:59Speaker 4: he'd start sculpting around. on a, you know, a greasy
- 33:03Speaker 4: theater floor.
- 33:05Speaker 8: And generally, it was supposedly to steal, you know, from purses,
- 33:09Speaker 8: but I think he had a fetish.
- 33:11Speaker 4: Going on with grabbing legs and things. Because we had
- 33:14Speaker 4: that one group come in and said, we just walked
- 33:16Speaker 4: on a guy.
- 33:18Speaker 8: And they said, we just walked on this guy.
- 33:23Speaker 4: And they came running out to tell us.
- 33:25Speaker 8: And then I watched, and I watched this head rise
- 33:28Speaker 8: above this jacket slowly. And somebody went down to check
- 33:32Speaker 8: with him, and he claimed he had gotten out of
- 33:34Speaker 8: his seat and was looking for his wallet. And that
- 33:36Speaker 8: was always his excuse, was you would look around, and
- 33:39Speaker 8: if you were near him, you'd see a.
- 33:40Speaker 4: Wallet on the ground. It was his. And that was
- 33:42Speaker 4: his alibi. I was looking for a wallet.
- 33:48Speaker 8: But, you know, you had more experience with the actual.
- 33:52Speaker 4: Crime show stuff.
- 33:53Speaker 3: Yeah, because, I mean, that was sort of like the
- 33:55Speaker 3: common thing, is, you know, people would say that there was.
- 34:00Speaker 3: A black man that was sitting in the front of
- 34:02Speaker 3: the theater, and then suddenly he would just reappear at
- 34:05Speaker 3: the back, and the woman usually would claim that they
- 34:09Speaker 3: had not seen him get up. And it was usually women, too,
- 34:12Speaker 3: with kids. It was also common with kids that they
- 34:16Speaker 3: had not seen him. And this all started the first
- 34:18Speaker 3: time I went over there, and somebody told me the
- 34:19Speaker 3: story of where this woman said, well, he was up
- 34:23Speaker 3: at the front of the theater, and the next thing
- 34:24Speaker 3: I knew he was behind me, and I never saw
- 34:26Speaker 3: him get up, so he had to have crawled. But
- 34:28Speaker 3: I was sitting on the edge of the aisle, so
- 34:30Speaker 3: we had to crawl underneath the seats. And I was like,
- 34:33Speaker 3: you can't do that because they're like four inches off
- 34:35Speaker 3: the ground.
- 34:37Speaker 6: But there was that one X file.
- 34:38Speaker 3: Oh, man.
- 34:40Speaker 13: The man that married that 16-year-old girl? What is that
- 34:46Speaker 13: man's name?
- 34:46Speaker 4: Cherry Lee Lewis?
- 34:48Speaker 12: No.
- 34:49Speaker 6: Woody Allen?
- 34:50Speaker 4: Woody Allen.
- 34:51Speaker 13: Not those two.
- 34:52Speaker 16: He was on Lost, and he was the creepy man
- 34:55Speaker 16: who could, like, with the yellow eyes and X-Files, that could, like,
- 34:57Speaker 16: slide through the small space.
- 34:58Speaker 4: There were two episodes.
- 34:59Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 35:00Speaker 4: Because he came back.
- 35:01Speaker 16: In real life, he married Courtney Stoddard or something, that
- 35:04Speaker 16: really annoying 16-year-old girl who looks like a 40-year-old lady
- 35:08Speaker 16: with a bunch of plastic surgery.
- 35:10Speaker 13: This was, like, a year ago.
- 35:11Speaker 3: Hmm.
- 35:11Speaker 6: Which one of those?
- 35:12Speaker 4: Who was he on? Really annoying.
- 35:14Speaker 13: I'll have to show you.
- 35:16Speaker 6: I haven't seen the X-Files episode in so long.
- 35:18Speaker 16: I'll have to show you her music video, Don't Put
- 35:20Speaker 16: It On Me, Girl. It's the worst thing you could
- 35:23Speaker 16: even imagine.
- 35:23Speaker 6: Don't Put It On Me, Girl.
- 35:24Speaker 13: Don't Put It On Me, Girl. It's the worst thing.
- 35:27Speaker 4: This sounds more terrifying than the show.
- 35:28Speaker 16: But I'm very interested in this Carling Joe story.
- 35:34Speaker 6: I went in and she had me go into the
- 35:37Speaker 6: theater and look for this person.
- 35:39Speaker 3: For whatever reason and he suddenly he was gone and
- 35:42Speaker 3: i didn't think anything of it until like a few
- 35:44Speaker 3: months later is the exact same thing and just over
- 35:48Speaker 3: the course of the years there i mean it became
- 35:49Speaker 3: like this common thing and other managers i'd talk to
- 35:51Speaker 3: them they'd heard it too and some were just like
- 35:54Speaker 3: that to work it almost be just explained just kind
- 35:56Speaker 3: of sliding down and around they just didn't notice and
- 35:58Speaker 3: then there were some odd ones because um there was
- 36:01Speaker 3: this one where um this girl was like um She
- 36:07Speaker 3: came out of the theater screaming hysterically, and this was, like,
- 36:09Speaker 3: on a Saturday night. And, I mean, it was me
- 36:13Speaker 3: and the police officer dealing with her. And her boyfriend
- 36:17Speaker 3: came out, too, freaked out, because apparently she was watching
- 36:20Speaker 3: a movie with her boyfriend sitting right next to her,
- 36:23Speaker 3: and all of a sudden, like, she's just kind of
- 36:25Speaker 3: looking up at the screen, and she just notices that
- 36:27Speaker 3: this guy is sitting in front of her, like he
- 36:29Speaker 3: hadn't been there the whole time, and just suddenly you
- 36:30Speaker 3: become aware that this person is, like, in the seat
- 36:32Speaker 3: in front of you, which is weird. And apparently she
- 36:35Speaker 3: was staring at him, and just without him getting up
- 36:39Speaker 3: or anything, he just, like, the whole torso turned around
- 36:43Speaker 3: and was just looking straight at her. And she couldn't,
- 36:47Speaker 3: somehow she couldn't describe what the face was.
- 36:50Speaker 6: She was very freaked out.
- 36:52Speaker 3: And then apparently it just, like, after it looked at
- 36:55Speaker 3: her for a while, it just leaned over and it
- 36:56Speaker 3: slid in between the back and the seat cushion of
- 37:00Speaker 3: the seat next to her.
- 37:00Speaker 6: And that's when she just went screaming out of the.
- 37:04Speaker 6: Theater and the um boyfriend went out.
- 37:07Speaker 3: After her because he hadn't seen anything wow and you
- 37:11Speaker 3: know the police officer thought that she was on drugs
- 37:13Speaker 3: or something but i mean you know it's he talked
- 37:15Speaker 3: with her and i was just like.
- 37:17Speaker 9: It's hard to get those drugs that you can't find
- 37:21Speaker 9: those in town anymore.
- 37:23Speaker 16: This is really interesting my friend kim uh like this
- 37:26Speaker 16: was probably close to 10 years ago she told me
- 37:28Speaker 16: this story um she and her sister had gone to
- 37:32Speaker 16: a movie like here one night because she owns Kaleidoscope
- 37:35Speaker 16: down the street, and they were sitting on top of
- 37:38Speaker 16: her car, and it was, like, late. It was probably, like,
- 37:42Speaker 16: midnight or 1, and everything was kind of closed. And
- 37:46Speaker 16: a man tried to crawl under.
- 37:47Speaker 13: The car and grab her sister's feet.
- 37:51Speaker 16: And, you know, so they screamed and started running, and
- 37:54Speaker 16: they don't know what happened to the guy, but, like,
- 37:55Speaker 16: that's kind of interesting. You know, because, I mean, like,
- 37:57Speaker 16: if you think about the creepiness of someone crawling under
- 38:00Speaker 16: a car to get you, that's just really weird. Mm-hmm.
- 38:04Speaker 16: I wonder if.
- 38:04Speaker 3: It's... But yeah, there was the one I told you
- 38:08Speaker 3: about when the first night that Robert came to work
- 38:10Speaker 3: for me as an assistant manager, didn't I? Because I
- 38:13Speaker 3: was telling him all these backstories. As I'm telling him
- 38:16Speaker 3: these backstories, all of a sudden the adding calculator just
- 38:19Speaker 3: sitting on the table just punched a couple, it was
- 38:22Speaker 3: like somebody hit enter or something, just punched out a
- 38:24Speaker 3: couple zeros on the tape. And Robert thought I was
- 38:28Speaker 3: pranking him.
- 38:29Speaker 4: He's like.
- 38:31Speaker 6: He's like, oh, that's clever.
- 38:32Speaker 4: I like that.
- 38:32Speaker 6: I said, I didn't do that.
- 38:36Speaker 4: He's like, no.
- 38:36Speaker 6: I said, I'm backing away from it.
- 38:40Speaker 4: He's like, all right. Mr.
- 38:44Speaker 3: Ghost, let's see you do that again. At which point
- 38:46Speaker 3: the thing started punching him out like crazy. And then
- 38:50Speaker 3: we were both actually kind of like, whoa, this is
- 38:53Speaker 3: a little weird. And then he found it funny. He
- 38:55Speaker 3: still just tore it off and looked at it. And, um,
- 38:59Speaker 3: He's like, you sure you aren't, like, doing this?
- 39:01Speaker 6: I'm like, no, I swear I'm not. It's spelled out,
- 39:03Speaker 6: get out. And he's like, 18 zeros, three sixes. And
- 39:09Speaker 6: we were almost kind of, like, hamming it up and
- 39:10Speaker 6: having fun with it.
- 39:11Speaker 3: And then all of a sudden this employee comes opening
- 39:13Speaker 3: the door to the office, which the office door, we
- 39:17Speaker 3: couldn't even figure out how he did it because the door.
- 39:19Speaker 6: Automatically for that office would lock when it shut.
- 39:23Speaker 3: Like, I didn't even know how to get the key
- 39:24Speaker 3: to turn it that way. And he opens up the door,
- 39:27Speaker 3: and I was like, how did you just open that up?
- 39:28Speaker 3: He's like, I don't know, I didn't even think about it.
- 39:31Speaker 3: What did you all need? I was like, what do
- 39:33Speaker 3: you mean? He goes, you just called me on the
- 39:34Speaker 3: phone and said to come into the office right now.
- 39:35Speaker 6: I was like, no, I didn't. He's like, no, it
- 39:39Speaker 6: was you. No, it wasn't.
- 39:43Speaker 3: And that's when Robert's like, you've done all these. He
- 39:45Speaker 3: kept thinking I'd staged it all. I said, no, I
- 39:47Speaker 3: have not staged any of this. That's still a souvenir
- 39:51Speaker 3: I think I've got from the village. Somewhere at home
- 39:53Speaker 3: I've got that section of adding tape. I just kept
- 39:55Speaker 3: it for whatever reason.
- 39:56Speaker 13: Maybe were there ones in it?
- 39:57Speaker 16: Maybe it's like binary.
- 40:00Speaker 3: It was just zero. It's like somebody just kept hitting
- 40:01Speaker 3: enter when there was nothing on there. And it kept
- 40:05Speaker 3: just punching, punching, punching, punching, and that was it.
- 40:08Speaker 9: That would be really frustrating to be a ghost around
- 40:11Speaker 9: somebody like you or me. Where everybody would just assume, oh,
- 40:16Speaker 9: you're doing that.
- 40:17Speaker 11: No, 666.
- 40:18Speaker 6: What have I got to do? What do I have
- 40:21Speaker 6: to do? It should be a comedy sketch.
- 40:23Speaker 13: Come on.
- 40:23Speaker 3: It's a bunch of skeptics who are in a blatantly
- 40:25Speaker 3: haunted house.
- 40:27Speaker 6: And there's one guy that everybody goes, oh, it's him.
- 40:30Speaker 10: I don't know.
- 40:31Speaker 14: And the sitcom The Ghost, right after that situation, he
- 40:35Speaker 14: would just look into an imaginary can and just be like, really?
- 40:38Speaker 8: And everyone would want to play.
- 40:40Speaker 6: I suppose it is kind of the plot of Beetlejuice
- 40:42Speaker 6: to an extent.
- 40:43Speaker 4: What do I have to.
- 40:44Speaker 7: Do to get rid of these humans?
- 40:46Speaker 16: You know, whenever something weird happens in my house, my neighbor,
- 40:49Speaker 16: we were standing in the hallway talking one night. And
- 40:51Speaker 16: my house was built in 1868, and it's just creepy.
- 40:54Speaker 16: If any house was ever haunted, it would be that one.
- 40:57Speaker 16: But we're standing in the hallway talking and the, like,
- 41:00Speaker 16: Victorian light fixture above our head.
- 41:02Speaker 13: Just starts, like, swaying violently. Like, there's nothing that could
- 41:06Speaker 13: have caused that. Even if it was, like, extremely windy,
- 41:08Speaker 13: nothing could have caused that. And he just looks at
- 41:10Speaker 13: it and he goes, huh. And then he goes, stop it. Like,
- 41:16Speaker 13: he has control over.
- 41:17Speaker 15: That's pretty bad when you get that used to ghosts
- 41:20Speaker 15: hanging around.
- 41:20Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 41:21Speaker 4: It's like, eh.
- 41:22Speaker 13: I mean, you know, like, I've.
- 41:24Speaker 16: Had weird things happen, or you were talking about that earlier,
- 41:26Speaker 16: but I've never felt scared or anything like that.
- 41:29Speaker 9: Well, that's kind of the plot of Truly Madly Deeply,
- 41:32Speaker 9: is that her husband dies, and then he comes back,
- 41:38Speaker 9: and then he just hangs out with his friends and
- 41:40Speaker 9: watches movies, and they're always cold, so they keep the
- 41:44Speaker 9: thermostat way up, and they just get to be annoying,
- 41:48Speaker 9: and eventually she just gets over it.
- 41:51Speaker 6: Yeah, it's kind of like a blithe spirit, too. Yeah.
- 41:55Speaker 3: That's such a weird movie, because the first time I
- 41:57Speaker 3: watched it, I was like, so the ghost of the
- 42:01Speaker 3: wife comes back, jealous of the new wife, and she
- 42:05Speaker 3: wants to trick the husband into getting murdered so.
- 42:09Speaker 6: That way she can spend time with him. That's kind
- 42:11Speaker 6: of dark for 40s stuff. Isn't that, what's his name?
- 42:15Speaker 4: The playwright?
- 42:16Speaker 2: Ibsen?
- 42:17Speaker 12: No.
- 42:17Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 42:20Speaker 9: No coward yeah by the spirit.
- 42:25Speaker 4: He had a.
- 42:26Speaker 9: Line i remember it was my favorite it's like quintessential
- 42:29Speaker 9: little coward line was that lamp is so unrestrained it
- 42:34Speaker 9: sets a bad example for the hell.
- 42:36Speaker 8: Oh wow i think it's legitimately unexplained stuff i mean.
- 42:46Speaker 3: I was going to say, we had that weird stuff
- 42:47Speaker 3: the one night at the Ouija board, but any Ouija
- 42:49Speaker 3: story just feels cliched.
- 42:51Speaker 6: But that wasn't this room.
- 42:52Speaker 8: We had a call in the dark Ouija board, and
- 42:54Speaker 8: several people were involved, like six or eight people were involved.
- 42:58Speaker 4: That's some weirdness. We'd have to energize it with a lamp,
- 43:00Speaker 4: and the lamp became unplugged.
- 43:02Speaker 6: Well, that's because we asked it to move.
- 43:04Speaker 3: We asked the spirit to move something, and all of
- 43:06Speaker 3: a sudden we hear this weird ping on the other
- 43:08Speaker 3: side of the room.
- 43:08Speaker 4: We're like, what was that?
- 43:09Speaker 6: And they're like, well, let's turn on the light to
- 43:11Speaker 6: see if we can go turn it on. Apparently the plug,
- 43:13Speaker 6: which was way over here, and all of us were
- 43:14Speaker 6: over there, just popped out and we'd also asked it
- 43:19Speaker 6: to make the.
- 43:19Speaker 3: Room brighter and it did which was really weird because
- 43:23Speaker 3: you know we just had the booth lights on just
- 43:26Speaker 3: the fluorescent lights on out there and we just had
- 43:29Speaker 3: the door open a crack just enough to be able
- 43:30Speaker 3: to see in here and what went from being just
- 43:33Speaker 3: very very dim got to the point where it was
- 43:35Speaker 3: illuminated almost to this brightness just by that crack of
- 43:40Speaker 3: light coming in it's as if the lights all out
- 43:42Speaker 3: there surged so brightly it cause that one little beam
- 43:46Speaker 3: coming in here to.
- 43:46Speaker 4: Just fill up the room with light. It was very strange.
- 43:50Speaker 3: And it was also me skeptical, thinking, well, since you
- 43:52Speaker 3: and Bob had suggested the idea, that maybe you could.
- 43:55Speaker 4: Call it some stuff. Which we kind of used to do.
- 43:58Speaker 6: We would do it with some, yeah.
- 44:00Speaker 8: When we'd get a newbie in here, we'd say, well,
- 44:02Speaker 8: you know, watch your radio at night, because you'll get
- 44:06Speaker 8: some calls that are a little weird.
- 44:07Speaker 4: You might hear children talking on the radio. Don't respond
- 44:11Speaker 4: to that stuff. They don't get spoke, you know.
- 44:14Speaker 3: Well, we used to keep, Ron got irritated that we
- 44:16Speaker 3: kept the Ouija board here and threw it out because
- 44:19Speaker 3: we used to keep the Ouija board here because every
- 44:21Speaker 3: time there was power outage, like on a day like today,
- 44:23Speaker 3: I'm surprised we didn't lose power because a good fart
- 44:25Speaker 3: in the.
- 44:25Speaker 4: Highlands and lose power.
- 44:28Speaker 3: And anytime we would lose power, once we got all
- 44:30Speaker 3: the patrons out, it was just completely dark.
- 44:33Speaker 6: Then we would, if there was any new employees, if it.
- 44:36Speaker 3: Was me and Bob and some of the old seasoned ones,
- 44:38Speaker 3: we'd be like, well, you know, this is when the
- 44:41Speaker 3: ghosts really like We would start telling all these stories
- 44:44Speaker 3: like we've been telling you all, except then we would
- 44:46Speaker 3: proceed to screw with them. We would take them back
- 44:50Speaker 3: to Theater 6. Sometimes, one of them... God, this was
- 44:56Speaker 3: a horrible thing to do. But we convinced... I can't
- 44:59Speaker 3: remember who it was. It was one of the girls.
- 45:01Speaker 3: We said, if you go and you sit in Theater
- 45:04Speaker 3: 6 by yourself long enough, you will see something appear.
- 45:10Speaker 6: And what I had done.
- 45:11Speaker 3: Was Bob and them convinced her, and while they're out
- 45:14Speaker 3: in the alcove convincing her, I'm in there, and I'm
- 45:16Speaker 3: down on the floor in the front with the flashlight,
- 45:18Speaker 3: charging up a glow-in-the-dark skeleton that we had for Halloween decorations,
- 45:23Speaker 3: and then just waited. And then what I did was,
- 45:25Speaker 3: when I heard her getting ready to come in, all
- 45:27Speaker 3: I did was I just held it up to my
- 45:28Speaker 3: body length, and I turned around to face the screen
- 45:30Speaker 3: to where you wouldn't be able to see it because
- 45:31Speaker 3: of my body blocking it, and I just waited for
- 45:33Speaker 3: like a couple minutes until it was like, very very
- 45:37Speaker 3: dim like it was almost had lost its charge and
- 45:39Speaker 3: that's when i just started like quietly approaching her just
- 45:42Speaker 3: like the fuck there.
- 45:45Speaker 6: Was another one where um.
- 45:48Speaker 3: There was another one where we're down in that theater
- 45:50Speaker 3: and they were doing a ouija board and i was
- 45:51Speaker 3: on the other side of the exit door and um
- 45:54Speaker 3: i was just like whispering incoherent stuff at the door
- 45:58Speaker 3: whenever they'd ask the ghost to say something, and eventually, like,
- 46:01Speaker 3: Bob was leading the discussion.
- 46:02Speaker 6: He got, basically, the ghost to say, come to the door,
- 46:05Speaker 6: and the new employee came to the door, which freaked
- 46:09Speaker 6: them out, too.
- 46:12Speaker 4: Yeah, I had a night here. I can't remember. Jay
- 46:16Speaker 4: was closing, Usher, I think.
- 46:18Speaker 8: I can't remember who the little blonde girl was. He
- 46:20Speaker 8: was putting the make on her, and they were sitting
- 46:25Speaker 8: out here, Nicky, I think.
- 46:27Speaker 4: Nicky, yeah. I think it was Nicky. And they were
- 46:30Speaker 4: sitting outside in the alcove, outside of the alcove windows
- 46:33Speaker 4: out there. And I said, well, I'm going. I had
- 46:36Speaker 4: to go do the bank run.
- 46:37Speaker 8: And I realized, well, they're out there by themselves, and
- 46:40Speaker 8: he's going to keep her talking as long as he can.
- 46:42Speaker 8: Did the bank run, came back, cruised by, and saw
- 46:47Speaker 8: they were still out there. So I went up the
- 46:48Speaker 8: alley real quick, parked next to the back door, opened
- 46:51Speaker 8: the back door to the theaters, ran in here. I
- 46:53Speaker 8: had a mummy-type mask.
- 46:54Speaker 4: With a hood on.
- 46:55Speaker 8: It just started skulking up through the theater really quick
- 46:57Speaker 8: in the dark and just gradually settled in right behind
- 47:00Speaker 8: them on the other side of the window.
- 47:01Speaker 4: They're busy talking.
- 47:02Speaker 8: I just got closer and closer to the window until
- 47:04Speaker 8: finally she turned around. I was like, they both ended
- 47:07Speaker 8: up like halfway across the parking lot.
- 47:09Speaker 4: I just sat there looking at them. It was great fun.
- 47:12Speaker 4: So yeah, it's one of the fun parts.
- 47:13Speaker 6: There was another one of the blackouts to where it
- 47:17Speaker 6: was me. I think Will might have been involved. I
- 47:21Speaker 6: think Sean. But there was.
- 47:25Speaker 3: Some new kid, I can't remember. I want to say
- 47:26Speaker 3: it was Aaron. I think that's who it was. But
- 47:30Speaker 3: it was during a blackout, and what we did was
- 47:33Speaker 3: we just went into Theater 8, and each of us
- 47:35Speaker 3: picked a corner in the theater, and we just went
- 47:38Speaker 3: and put our faces in the corner. Because he'd gone
- 47:40Speaker 3: out to smoke, and when he came back in, he
- 47:41Speaker 3: was looking for us. And eventually he just found us
- 47:44Speaker 3: in there, and he's just like, okay, that's funny, guys.
- 47:48Speaker 6: It's really funny, guys. We just kept doing it, standing there.
- 47:50Speaker 3: And what made it so perfect was, in that time
- 47:53Speaker 3: when he was in there, and he just kept, like,
- 47:54Speaker 3: standing there waiting for something to happen, the security lights, which,
- 47:58Speaker 3: when the power goes.
- 47:59Speaker 6: Out, they come on, they only got, like, 20 minutes.
- 48:00Speaker 3: Like, the last one in there just went out while he.
- 48:02Speaker 6: Was in there, and it just freaked him out.
- 48:05Speaker 4: It's a very Blair Witch, which... We used to do that.
- 48:07Speaker 4: I mean, Blair Witch, which was a huge... The poster
- 48:12Speaker 4: was in here, wasn't it? It's behind you.
- 48:14Speaker 6: It's behind you. Just employees, like when the movie was over,
- 48:18Speaker 6: if the lights didn't come.
- 48:18Speaker 3: Up right away, just for the ushers to stand with
- 48:20Speaker 3: their faces in the corner at the back of the theater.
- 48:24Speaker 8: This is the first indie movie like this that got
- 48:27Speaker 8: a lot of guerrilla marketing online.
- 48:29Speaker 4: I'd been watching it and saying, this looks cool. I
- 48:31Speaker 4: told Larry about it.
- 48:32Speaker 8: Even the booker was unaware of it. He said, get
- 48:34Speaker 8: on this as quick as you can. We nabbed it
- 48:37Speaker 8: before this Backwoods Showcase was open. Before they had a chance,
- 48:40Speaker 8: they were so pissed off. Because we had this on
- 48:42Speaker 8: two screens opening night.
- 48:44Speaker 4: And everybody thought it was real.
- 48:46Speaker 3: I was actually hired as part of the Blair Witch stocking.
- 48:50Speaker 6: Because I was hired a couple.
- 48:51Speaker 4: Weeks before it.
- 48:52Speaker 8: It was selling out two shows in advance. I had
- 48:56Speaker 8: guys trying to bribe me. for a ticket, I'll give
- 48:59Speaker 8: you $ 50. I'm like, no, we don't have any seats.
- 49:03Speaker 4: Fire laws, you know.
- 49:04Speaker 8: But, you know, kids would come out, petrified, and we
- 49:07Speaker 8: started skulking down into the alley next door, a bunch
- 49:11Speaker 8: of trees out here, and all those little sticks were
- 49:13Speaker 8: falling out of the trees, and we were making those
- 49:15Speaker 8: little stick figures. People were parked out here with their
- 49:19Speaker 8: windows down. So we'd just start laying stick figures in
- 49:21Speaker 8: their cars. And then we'd just walk outside.
- 49:24Speaker 4: And there'd be shrieks coming from the parking lot. It
- 49:28Speaker 4: was great. That was a lot of fun.
- 49:32Speaker 6: It's fun when we can do this. Were you here
- 49:33Speaker 6: the night that we opened up Snakes on a Plane?
- 49:35Speaker 3: No.
- 49:36Speaker 6: I went down to... Because I.
- 49:38Speaker 3: Watched it and knew where the scene was that the
- 49:40Speaker 3: snakes dropped out of the oxygen containers. I just went down,
- 49:44Speaker 3: and I got permission from Ryan. He let me go
- 49:46Speaker 3: buy some money. I just bought a huge tub of
- 49:48Speaker 3: fake snakes.
- 49:49Speaker 6: From the Louisville Zoo.
- 49:50Speaker 3: And so I was just up in the booth and
- 49:51Speaker 3: just threw them out all over the people on that
- 49:54Speaker 3: one particular moment.
- 49:56Speaker 4: Spirit of Wind Castle.
- 49:58Speaker 7: I think I was here that night.
- 49:59Speaker 4: I don't remember snakes. It must have been a different show.
- 50:02Speaker 4: I saw it opening night, though. Dork that I am.
- 50:05Speaker 13: You were so excited about Snakes Are Playing. I know.
- 50:08Speaker 4: Samuel L. Jackson called me.
- 50:10Speaker 14: I don't think I've ever been more excited during a
- 50:15Speaker 14: build-up for a movie than that. It couldn't have been
- 50:18Speaker 14: that good. There's no way it could have met the hype.
- 50:20Speaker 14: But the excitement.
- 50:21Speaker 6: Me and my friends, we were just joking about it
- 50:23Speaker 6: the whole time.
- 50:24Speaker 3: Could not believe they had made a movie. See, I
- 50:26Speaker 3: love animal attack films, but at the same time, I've
- 50:28Speaker 3: never seen it. I like true animal attack where they
- 50:32Speaker 3: put the animals... in the scene it's like all the
- 50:35Speaker 3: CG stuff to me doesn't appeal to me.
- 50:38Speaker 15: It's bad but that's the thing I haven't gone back
- 50:40Speaker 15: to watch it since because that night was so much
- 50:43Speaker 15: fun like the whole theater it was like a party
- 50:45Speaker 15: like at the end of the.
- 50:46Speaker 4: Night nobody left the theater when.
- 50:47Speaker 15: Credits were rolling everybody walked up to the front and
- 50:50Speaker 15: were hanging out up there I've never seen that happen
- 50:55Speaker 15: before in the middle of a movie it wasn't like
- 50:57Speaker 15: a specific private event it was just a showing but
- 51:00Speaker 15: everybody went and hung out after that it was weird.
- 51:03Speaker 16: I remember right as that movie was about to come out,
- 51:08Speaker 16: my friend was somewhere, like at a lake with her kid,
- 51:13Speaker 16: and a snake, she had her door open, and a
- 51:16Speaker 16: snake got in her car.
- 51:17Speaker 13: And I was like, it's happening!
- 51:19Speaker 3: It's happening!
- 51:22Speaker 9: Once my cat brought in a snake in her mouth.
- 51:25Speaker 9: It was like a Salvador Dali mustache.
- 51:27Speaker 6: It just came walking in.
- 51:29Speaker 13: My cat did that the other day.
- 51:31Speaker 16: There was a tiny little garden snake on my front step,
- 51:34Speaker 16: and I was like, oh, you're going to be cat food.
- 51:36Speaker 9: Of course, then there's snakes in a pool.
- 51:39Speaker 8: That's a whole different thing, so I will say.
- 51:44Speaker 9: I'm getting pretty tired of these motherfucking snakes in this pool.
- 51:48Speaker 4: In this motherfucking pool?
- 51:49Speaker 13: I really, I thought that.
- 51:50Speaker 6: Is there somebody here?
- 51:52Speaker 13: Who's here?
- 51:54Speaker 6: You know I don't like games.
- 51:56Speaker 13: Someone brought the smoke machine.
- 52:01Speaker 6: Into the pool.
- 52:03Speaker 15: So we've wrapped up our ghost and spooky stories and
- 52:06Speaker 15: creepy people and snakes.
- 52:08Speaker 6: We've covered all those now.
- 52:10Speaker 3: Well, I mean, we could probably sit here and babble
- 52:11Speaker 3: on with stories from here for a while, but we
- 52:13Speaker 3: better cap it while we can.
- 52:14Speaker 4: Well, I don't believe in goats. I've seen them. You've
- 52:19Speaker 4: seen them?
- 52:19Speaker 9: But I think there has to be a logical explanation.
- 52:23Speaker 4: That having been said. I don't believe.
- 52:25Speaker 3: I don't believe that Liam Neeson is real.
- 52:29Speaker 6: Prove to me that Liam Neeson is real. He's a
- 52:31Speaker 6: CGI effect.
- 52:32Speaker 2: He is.
- 52:32Speaker 6: Spielberg went back and, you know, put him in Schindler's List.
- 52:35Speaker 4: You know, it's very.
- 52:37Speaker 6: No, ghosts.
- 52:38Speaker 3: We were just having this talk earlier. We were talking
- 52:40Speaker 3: about orphans, too, and all this stuff. We came up
- 52:44Speaker 3: with the idea that on Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.
- 52:49Speaker 7: He's dead.
- 52:51Speaker 3: It makes sense because he's dead. He got killed in
- 52:54Speaker 3: a knife fight. That's referred to in the opening credits.
- 52:58Speaker 3: and then he ends up in basically purgatory. He has
- 53:00Speaker 3: to do all these good deeds, and the uncle and
- 53:03Speaker 3: aunt are like the angels watching over him, and every
- 53:05Speaker 3: time his parents show up in the show, which.
- 53:07Speaker 6: Is very rarely, it's like when they're visiting his grave.
- 53:09Speaker 6: Think about it that way. It's very metaphysical.
- 53:14Speaker 16: Yeah.
- 53:14Speaker 4: I love it.
- 53:16Speaker 15: And an odd way to wrap up the special spooky
- 53:19Speaker 15: ghost stories edition.
- 53:20Speaker 6: We had an opportunity to cap it a minute ago.
- 53:25Speaker 4: Yeah, we'll wrap that up for now. Otherwise, that about
- 53:28Speaker 4: does it.
- 53:28Speaker 6: We will return next week.
- 53:29Speaker 4: Same geek time, same geek feed. Thanks for listening.
- 55:34Speaker 3: We're just going to sleep.
- 55:52Speaker 4: Here tonight, right?
- 55:55Speaker 6: Yeah, we have to now. We have to test the... Oh,
- 55:58Speaker 6: by the way, we're locked from the inside.
- 55:59Speaker 7: This episode is a production of Movie Meltdown. Produced and
