- 0:09Speaker 1: This is the Patriots Catch twenty two podcast. Lazar and Alex.
- 0:14Speaker 2: Carm Bla, Blazarre and Lazarn.
- 0:16Speaker 1: Oh, everybody nailed it.
- 0:18Speaker 2: Joined has always Dad. Here is Evan, Lazar and Alex cars.
- 0:26Speaker 1: What incentive is there for the Raiders to throw the
- 0:28Speaker 1: ball in the scambodies zero? I would not be surprised
- 0:30Speaker 1: the Rams come out run the ball thirty sometimes if
- 0:32Speaker 1: the Patriots opened the door for him. The Bill showed
- 0:35Speaker 1: that just because you're behind multiple scores on the Patriots,
- 0:38Speaker 1: he doesn't mean you need to stop running the football.
- 0:41Speaker 1: So this is where you're gonna have a chance, hopefully
- 0:43Speaker 1: like Patriot Dian in early lead, you're gonna have a
- 0:45Speaker 1: chance to kind of write the wrongs from last week
- 0:47Speaker 1: because in Beery Down twenty one nothing you should stop
- 0:49Speaker 1: running the ball. Bill's double down on running the ball
- 0:51Speaker 1: in the works. Yeah, I would not be surprised when
- 0:53Speaker 1: the Ravens take the same philosophy. If they fall behind, well.
- 0:58Speaker 2: You're pretty much right.
- 1:00Speaker 1: I think they kind of.
- 1:01Speaker 2: They think they dropped back twenty two times in this game.
- 1:04Speaker 1: So I was half right when I said there's no
- 1:07Speaker 1: reason to stop running the ball. I thought it was
- 1:08Speaker 1: implied with Derek Henry. At no point did I consider
- 1:11Speaker 1: you would pull Derek Henry from the game. But that's
- 1:13Speaker 1: a that's another point of common.
- 1:15Speaker 2: One second, I gotta I forgot to tweet out the show.
- 1:17Speaker 1: You forgot to tweet out, you forgot to tweet out
- 1:19Speaker 1: the show, everybody. I forgot to go to tweet out.
- 1:21Speaker 1: That's why I wait until Patriots dot Com tweets it,
- 1:25Speaker 1: because they do it with the live feed.
- 1:27Speaker 2: And I usually tweet like ten minutes before I tweet
- 1:30Speaker 2: a little a little tease, and I forgot to do that.
- 1:33Speaker 2: It's been it's been a little busy the last couple
- 1:35Speaker 2: of days, a little busy. Hello, Hi, Evan Lazar, Alex Barth,
- 1:42Speaker 2: Patriots Catch twenty two, Alex behind the Glass, Happy Holidays,
- 1:46Speaker 2: Merry Christmas, which feels weird coming from us, but Marry Christmas,
- 1:51Speaker 2: Happy New Year, you know, all that good stuff. Christmas
- 1:55Speaker 2: Eve show here for you guys, and we're gonna keep
- 1:58Speaker 2: it to football, and as we always do on this program,
- 2:02Speaker 2: and we are going to talk about this Ravens game.
- 2:06Speaker 2: But before we do that, there was a ton of news.
- 2:11Speaker 1: Leave it to you know. I'm filming on the radio
- 2:13Speaker 1: bunch this week. And so yesterday wasn't. I was like,
- 2:15Speaker 1: all right, there's no Patriots availability. I'm not on the
- 2:18Speaker 1: like good day to take it easy before like I'm
- 2:20Speaker 1: the one that like, oh it's Christmas. Wow, my work
- 2:23Speaker 1: schedule gets really busy all of a sudden, and then
- 2:25Speaker 1: just news news, news, like all day it was crazy.
- 2:29Speaker 2: Yeah, So we'll get to the good, the bat and
- 2:31Speaker 2: the stuff that gets to be and break down this
- 2:34Speaker 2: big fourth quarter comeback against Baltimore. But we got to
- 2:37Speaker 2: get to this news off the top of the show.
- 2:39Speaker 2: That happened yesterday really just a ton of it.
- 2:42Speaker 1: You know.
- 2:42Speaker 2: We got Pro Bowls, we got injuries, we got contract extensions,
- 2:46Speaker 2: all the way down the board. So it just is
- 2:49Speaker 2: a busy day.
- 2:50Speaker 1: This is like your old old Patriots Beat episode. Yeah,
- 2:53Speaker 1: we'll just opening up. Hey, here's the news of the day. Yeah,
- 2:56Speaker 1: reacting to everything.
- 2:57Speaker 2: It is a busy day yesterday it turned out to be.
- 3:00Speaker 2: I didn't think it was going to be when I
- 3:02Speaker 2: woke up yesterday morning, but it turned out to be.
- 3:04Speaker 2: So I kind of put this in the good and
- 3:08Speaker 2: the bad of the injuries of the news. So we'll
- 3:13Speaker 2: start with the good stuff because I think that's you know,
- 3:16Speaker 2: let's just start with some positives. So I think the
- 3:19Speaker 2: number one thing that is probably on the good side
- 3:22Speaker 2: is that Milton Williams is back at Patriots practice this week.
- 3:25Speaker 2: The Patriots yesterday officially started his twenty one day clock,
- 3:30Speaker 2: and it is expected that he is going to be
- 3:33Speaker 2: activated off injured reserve and play again this season. Now
- 3:38Speaker 2: we'll see about Sunday, and that kind of gets into
- 3:41Speaker 2: a conversation that we'll probably have more in the second
- 3:44Speaker 2: hour of the show about these next two weeks and
- 3:47Speaker 2: kind of how you handle it and all that kind
- 3:49Speaker 2: of stuff with the Patriots headed to the playoffs. But
- 3:52Speaker 2: Milton Williams back at practice, talked to the media yesterday,
- 3:56Speaker 2: said that he feels ready to go. Obviously wants to
- 4:00Speaker 2: test out that ankle in practice and make sure that
- 4:02Speaker 2: he doesn't have any setbacks, but feels good and looks
- 4:06Speaker 2: like he's coming back, and you know that's huge.
- 4:10Speaker 1: I mean, they are entire run.
- 4:12Speaker 2: Defenses fallen apart since he got hurt, and there's other
- 4:16Speaker 2: injuries that coincide with that, which is why those on
- 4:19Speaker 2: off the field stats are always a little bit wonky.
- 4:22Speaker 2: But you know, you have Robert Splaine's injury you have
- 4:25Speaker 2: Kiros Tonga in and out of the lineup during that
- 4:27Speaker 2: period of time as well. But from week eleven to now,
- 4:32Speaker 2: the last four games without Milton Williams, and really it
- 4:36Speaker 2: was five because he didn't really play against the Jets.
- 4:38Speaker 2: He played eight snaps against the Jets in that Thursday
- 4:41Speaker 2: night game and then sat the rest of that game
- 4:44Speaker 2: as well. So when you put it all together, they
- 4:46Speaker 2: went from like a top ten run defense to a
- 4:50Speaker 2: bottom five run defense. I think it was like fourth
- 4:53Speaker 2: in RUSH EPA to twenty ninth. Is this split without
- 4:57Speaker 2: Millon Williams. He also obviously was right up there top
- 5:01Speaker 2: five in the league in terms of pressure rate and
- 5:03Speaker 2: win rate and all those good things in the past
- 5:05Speaker 2: Rush too. So he was a huge, huge part of
- 5:08Speaker 2: this team and they need him to be the guy
- 5:12Speaker 2: that he was pre injury. If they're gonna have a
- 5:15Speaker 2: deep playoff runt, they need Milton Williams. So it's good
- 5:18Speaker 2: to see him back at practice. We'll see him in
- 5:20Speaker 2: the flesh out of practice this afternoon, but at least
- 5:24Speaker 2: we were told yesterday that he was out at practice.
- 5:26Speaker 1: And they officially activated him on the wire. Yeah that's
- 5:28Speaker 1: the plan. Yeah, we talked about it last week, and
- 5:32Speaker 1: you've been getting the question, I know. I'm sure you've
- 5:35Speaker 1: been getting the question. I know I've been getting the question,
- 5:37Speaker 1: what can they do about the run game? Like schematically,
- 5:39Speaker 1: what are they doing wrong? And look, they came out
- 5:42Speaker 1: with essentially six down linemen. Yeah on Sunday night, still
- 5:46Speaker 1: couldn't start. They were playing like an old school for
- 5:49Speaker 1: like the three linebackers standing up behind the defensive line.
- 5:52Speaker 1: You really never see that anymore. Yeah, and they still
- 5:55Speaker 1: couldn't stop it. So it's as like I said, there's
- 5:57Speaker 1: maybe minor tweaks you can make here and there, but
- 5:59Speaker 1: it has been it's a personnel thing. So getting him back,
- 6:02Speaker 1: we'll see where Robert Splaine's at as well. That can
- 6:04Speaker 1: only help.
- 6:05Speaker 2: Yeah, you're one hundred percent right and this you know this.
- 6:08Speaker 2: We'll get more into this with the game recap. But
- 6:11Speaker 2: in this game, they played thirty snaps in base defense.
- 6:13Speaker 2: A couple of those were in that like heavy base
- 6:16Speaker 2: defense where there's only three defensive backs on the field. Yeah,
- 6:19Speaker 2: and the Ravens average five and a half yards to
- 6:21Speaker 2: carry against base defense. So they still couldn't stop the
- 6:25Speaker 2: run even when they put the big boys out there.
- 6:27Speaker 2: So having Milton Williams back is going to be massive.
- 6:30Speaker 2: I'd also say it's been a frustrating four weeks for
- 6:35Speaker 2: Christian Barmore without his his buddy in there and the inside.
- 6:38Speaker 2: He's had double teams, you know, like he likes to
- 6:42Speaker 2: say to me, you know, he's got four hands on
- 6:44Speaker 2: him all the time, right, Like there's just bodies on
- 6:47Speaker 2: him all the time. Run game, Pass game. He has
- 6:51Speaker 2: been the Tuesday player. He has been the guy that's
- 6:53Speaker 2: been circled every single week. His lack of one on
- 6:56Speaker 2: ones is telling on the tape without Milton Williams helping
- 7:00Speaker 2: him out there on the inside. So other than Patriots
- 7:03Speaker 2: fans in Milton Williams, I think the happiest person on
- 7:07Speaker 2: earth that Milon Williams is back as Christian Barmore, because
- 7:10Speaker 2: I think the last month has been hard on him
- 7:13Speaker 2: without Milon Williams in there. All Right. The other good
- 7:17Speaker 2: bit of Patriots news that I think is really kind
- 7:21Speaker 2: of low key important news is extending Ben Brown, which
- 7:26Speaker 2: I think is a sneaky good extension. I cannot tell
- 7:29Speaker 2: you how valuable it is to have a super sub
- 7:33Speaker 2: on the inside or swing tackle on the outside that
- 7:37Speaker 2: you can come in play all three interior positions, play
- 7:40Speaker 2: that jumbo tight end role if you want him to
- 7:43Speaker 2: do that as well, and play it at a starting caliber.
- 7:45Speaker 2: Clip He's been good in both of his spots starts.
- 7:48Speaker 2: I think he might start again on Sunday with Jerry
- 7:51Speaker 2: Wilson in concussion protocol, so he might get the start
- 7:54Speaker 2: at left guard again. This is a valuable guy to have.
- 7:58Speaker 2: You know, that sixth offensive is a really difficult role
- 8:03Speaker 2: to fill for a lot of teams. You know, a
- 8:05Speaker 2: lot of teams don't have five starting caliber offensive lineman,
- 8:08Speaker 2: let alone six, and I think the Patriots might have
- 8:10Speaker 2: six with Ben Brown. So I've heard a lot of
- 8:14Speaker 2: you know, Ted Carris comparisons with him. I think that's
- 8:17Speaker 2: a good comp you know, he's kind of the new
- 8:18Speaker 2: Ted Carris for the Patriots. So it's good to see
- 8:22Speaker 2: them lock up a guy like Ben Brown who was
- 8:25Speaker 2: going to be a restricted free agent at the end
- 8:27Speaker 2: of the year. Reared him with a contract extension, but
- 8:31Speaker 2: also keep their depth on the offensive line.
- 8:33Speaker 1: Yeah, it's a good move. Like you said, the depths important.
- 8:36Speaker 1: We'll see what happens. Garret Bradbury is still signed for
- 8:38Speaker 1: another year, but it's no guaranteed money, so if they
- 8:39Speaker 1: needn't move some pieces around, he gives them some flexibility
- 8:42Speaker 1: there as well as Jared Wilson the ability to play
- 8:44Speaker 1: left guard and center. So I've been a big fan
- 8:47Speaker 1: of Ben Brown. I think that's known. And look back
- 8:50Speaker 1: in camp, remember it didn't look like he was going
- 8:51Speaker 1: to make the team, and he plays his way into
- 8:53Speaker 1: the backup role and now he's played well in some
- 8:55Speaker 1: spots starts, and Mike Rabel said he like program player.
- 8:58Speaker 1: That's the guy you kind of point to when everybody
- 9:01Speaker 1: else asks, like, what's the program about? How should I
- 9:04Speaker 1: handle myself? How should I go about my business? You
- 9:06Speaker 1: point he's not the only one in the room, but
- 9:08Speaker 1: you point to a guy like Ben Brown and say
- 9:09Speaker 1: that's what we're looking for. And so you need a
- 9:11Speaker 1: couple of guys like that around and obviously they need
- 9:14Speaker 1: to be able to play to justify keeping them around,
- 9:16Speaker 1: and Ben Brown can do that and can do both.
- 9:18Speaker 1: So happy for him, good to see him, good move
- 9:20Speaker 1: to keep him, And it really tells you to your point.
- 9:24Speaker 1: He's a restricted free agent, yes, so they didn't have
- 9:29Speaker 1: to worry about negotiating against like they could have tendered
- 9:31Speaker 1: him and and just moved on. I think this tells
- 9:34Speaker 1: you how highly they think of him. That you don't
- 9:35Speaker 1: usually see restricted free agents sign extensions in season. That's
- 9:39Speaker 1: pretty rare. I can't remember too many instances of that,
- 9:42Speaker 1: And again, it just speaks to how high they are
- 9:45Speaker 1: on him.
- 9:46Speaker 2: Yeah, this basically doubles up what he would have gotten
- 9:49Speaker 2: as a restricted free agent, So he would have probably
- 9:52Speaker 2: gotten around two and a half three million, depending on
- 9:54Speaker 2: which tender they gave him. So they gave him six
- 9:56Speaker 2: with this contract. So it's basically like they tacked on
- 9:59Speaker 2: two restricted free agent tenders and into right, so they
- 10:04Speaker 2: gave him two right, right, you know.
- 10:06Speaker 1: So you can restricted for agent for a year.
- 10:08Speaker 2: Right, So they were able to lock him up. But
- 10:11Speaker 2: like I said, uh, there's a dearth of that's the
- 10:15Speaker 2: right word, right, there's a dirt of offensive line depth
- 10:20Speaker 2: throughout the entire.
- 10:21Speaker 1: NFL, And that would be correct.
- 10:24Speaker 2: Ben Brown is having a guy on your roster like
- 10:27Speaker 2: Ben Brown is extremely valuable to these teams. And so
- 10:32Speaker 2: that was good to see. And I had this last thing.
- 10:34Speaker 2: I think him adding the ability or showing the ability
- 10:39Speaker 2: to play guard is also really big. You know, he
- 10:41Speaker 2: came in as a center he played center for them
- 10:43Speaker 2: last year and Drake May's rookie season, and now he's
- 10:48Speaker 2: shown that he can play at least left guard. He
- 10:50Speaker 2: has I don't think he's played right guard in the
- 10:52Speaker 2: game yet, but he's at least shown that he can
- 10:54Speaker 2: play left guard, which I'm sure means he can play
- 10:57Speaker 2: right guard. So he has true three position versus satility,
- 11:00Speaker 2: so he can really play four different positions because if
- 11:02Speaker 2: you had the muscle tight end or the jumbo tight
- 11:05Speaker 2: end role into that as well. So Ben Brown extension,
- 11:08Speaker 2: Melon Williams back at practice. The third thing here that
- 11:13Speaker 2: happened yesterday was the Pro Bowl Pro Bowl announcements. Patriots
- 11:17Speaker 2: have two Pro Bowlers, Drake May, which I think was
- 11:20Speaker 2: the easiest one to predict ever, and Christian Zalez gets
- 11:23Speaker 2: his first Pro Bowl nomination. This just starting with Christian
- 11:28Speaker 2: Zales real quick. He easily should have been a Pro
- 11:31Speaker 2: Bowler last year. He had a better year last year
- 11:34Speaker 2: and was a second team All Pro. But oftentimes you
- 11:37Speaker 2: kind of have to build up reputation over the course
- 11:40Speaker 2: of a couple of years to get the Pro Bowl.
- 11:43Speaker 2: So I know there's a kind of some tongue in
- 11:46Speaker 2: cheek about this. Probably wasn't his best year, you know,
- 11:49Speaker 2: compared to last year. But at the same time, I
- 11:52Speaker 2: think that he earned it last year. So now you
- 11:54Speaker 2: kind of get that reputation Pro Bowl this year and
- 11:57Speaker 2: he's still one of the better corners in the AFC.
- 11:59Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, like it's a fan vote. A lot
- 12:01Speaker 1: of it is just name recognition and things like that.
- 12:03Speaker 1: And that's not take anything away from again, like he's.
- 12:04Speaker 2: A third of it's a fan vote.
- 12:05Speaker 1: He's a good player and he has name recognition. Yeah
- 12:08Speaker 1: that's fair, but like, yeah, yeah, I'm still mad he
- 12:11Speaker 1: didn't make He was an All Pro last year. He
- 12:12Speaker 1: didn't make it.
- 12:12Speaker 2: Oh yeah, it was. It was ridiculous that he didn't
- 12:15Speaker 2: make it last year. So regardless of what you think
- 12:17Speaker 2: of his season this year, he earned a Pro Bowl
- 12:20Speaker 2: in one of the last two years for sure, and
- 12:22Speaker 2: he gets it this year. Drake may first first ballot
- 12:28Speaker 2: Pro Bowl or like initial Pro Bowl vote. He was
- 12:32Speaker 2: an alternate last year. I thought his answers about that
- 12:35Speaker 2: yesterday were great.
- 12:36Speaker 1: Yeah. When you say, like, oh, they had they finally
- 12:38Speaker 1: found somebody to do.
- 12:39Speaker 2: It, Yeah, they he was the last person they asked.
- 12:42Speaker 2: Uh so I this was you know, a first true
- 12:46Speaker 2: Pro Bowl nomination for Drake May. So. The one thing
- 12:49Speaker 2: that I tweeted out last night that I think is
- 12:53Speaker 2: somewhat important because I don't I got to be honest
- 12:55Speaker 2: with you, like, I'm happy for both of them, but
- 12:56Speaker 2: I don't give a crap about the Pro Bowl, like
- 12:58Speaker 2: no one does. But what this is somewhat relevant in
- 13:03Speaker 2: terms of team building is that this kicks in an
- 13:06Speaker 2: escalator and their fifth year options for both Christian Gonzales
- 13:09Speaker 2: and Drake May. So there's one Pro Bowl nomination as
- 13:13Speaker 2: an escalator, and then one or more Pro Bowl nominations,
- 13:17Speaker 2: you know, two plus nominations. So if Drake May goes
- 13:20Speaker 2: back to the Pro Bowl next year, then he will
- 13:23Speaker 2: then have another escalator that kicks in that increases the
- 13:27Speaker 2: amount of his fifth year option. Now, a lot of
- 13:30Speaker 2: people said to me on Twitter because I said they
- 13:33Speaker 2: have to decide on Christian Gonzalez's fifth year option, the option,
- 13:37Speaker 2: what kind of decision is there? It's a no brain. Yeah,
- 13:40Speaker 2: of course it's a no brainer. But they still have
- 13:41Speaker 2: to say yes or no. And it's still it's a formality, maybe,
- 13:46Speaker 2: but they still have to say yes or no.
- 13:48Speaker 1: The some teams too, like if you're going to do
- 13:50Speaker 1: an extension, then you don't pick up the fifty year options.
- 13:53Speaker 1: So there's that. Well, so this is this is where
- 13:55Speaker 1: it gets a little tricky and it gets built in
- 13:58Speaker 1: the extension.
- 13:58Speaker 2: So yeah, so I think this is where it's relevant.
- 14:01Speaker 2: So most likely what they're gonna do is They're going
- 14:05Speaker 2: to probably pick up Christian Gonzalez's fifth year option in
- 14:08Speaker 2: May of next spring in the next offseason, and then,
- 14:12Speaker 2: just like the Jets initially did before they decided to
- 14:15Speaker 2: for some reason trade him with sauce Gardner, they then
- 14:19Speaker 2: agreed to a contract extension with sauce Gardner and like
- 14:22Speaker 2: July or something like that as a four year contract extension.
- 14:26Speaker 2: So that really turns into to kind of use like
- 14:29Speaker 2: basketball parlance, it's like a four plus one, right, because
- 14:32Speaker 2: he played this year, sauce Gardner the twenty twenty five
- 14:35Speaker 2: season on his fifth year option, and then the next
- 14:38Speaker 2: extension kicks in in twenty twenty six, so it gives
- 14:41Speaker 2: a team five years of team control. So it actually
- 14:44Speaker 2: makes more sense. Now the player probably doesn't like it
- 14:46Speaker 2: too much, but it actually makes more sense for them
- 14:49Speaker 2: to trigger his fifth year option and then extend him
- 14:52Speaker 2: after the fifth year option, so his twenty twenty seven
- 14:56Speaker 2: cap hit.
- 14:57Speaker 1: I know this is kind of hard to follow, so
- 14:59Speaker 1: right eclogize still extend him at You don't have to
- 15:02Speaker 1: wait the full year to extend him. You can extend
- 15:04Speaker 1: him after picking up the fifth year correct.
- 15:05Speaker 2: But it would make sense from a team perspective to
- 15:10Speaker 2: trigger the fifth year option and then post fifth year
- 15:13Speaker 2: option status sign him to an extension because that would
- 15:17Speaker 2: give you five years of team control and the fifthier
- 15:20Speaker 2: option is going to be a lot cheaper than his extension.
- 15:23Speaker 1: So right now, the fifth year option a cordner over
- 15:25Speaker 1: the caps seventeen point five million.
- 15:26Speaker 2: Correct, So it be seventeen point five million for Christian Gonzales.
- 15:30Speaker 2: So why is that relevant? Well, I know a lot
- 15:33Speaker 2: of people don't like the cap stuff, but I do
- 15:35Speaker 2: think it's relevant in the fact that it's a fully
- 15:38Speaker 2: guaranteed year of the contract. So his twenty twenty seven
- 15:42Speaker 2: cap hit is going to be seventeen point five million dollars.
- 15:45Speaker 2: And I understand that people don't care about the cap
- 15:48Speaker 2: and all that stuff. It's money in and it's money
- 15:51Speaker 2: out because that's a fully guaranteed year, so it's still
- 15:55Speaker 2: a budget. There's still a payroll, there's still a cap,
- 15:59Speaker 2: there's still expenditures that they are not going to go over, right, Like,
- 16:03Speaker 2: that's just football, that's just sports, in any sports. So
- 16:06Speaker 2: Christian Gonzalez's cap it in twenty to twenty seven will
- 16:10Speaker 2: most likely be seventeen point five million. For Drake May,
- 16:14Speaker 2: it's going to be north of twenty two million dollars.
- 16:17Speaker 2: I think this year Will Anderson's is going to be
- 16:20Speaker 2: right around twenty two million. So if you then adjust
- 16:24Speaker 2: for inflation and all that kind of stuff in the
- 16:26Speaker 2: NFL over the next couple of years, when the Patriots
- 16:29Speaker 2: have to make a decision again, they're going to pick
- 16:32Speaker 2: it up. But when they do eventually pick up Drake
- 16:35Speaker 2: May's figure option that is going to be north of
- 16:39Speaker 2: twenty two million dollars, which will be an absolute bargain
- 16:42Speaker 2: for Drake May. But at the same time, it's just
- 16:45Speaker 2: you know, kind of some housekeeping, bookkeeping stuff. I don't
- 16:49Speaker 2: love it. It's that set up that way because I
- 16:51Speaker 2: think the Pro Bowl is kind of a.
- 16:52Speaker 1: Sham and all. Probably yeah, but the players probably want
- 16:55Speaker 1: it easier.
- 16:55Speaker 2: To it's much to take, it's easier to attake, So.
- 16:59Speaker 1: The alternates count towards that kicking in two. No, you
- 17:01Speaker 1: have to be Drake May currently has no one. He
- 17:04Speaker 1: has one with this year yet right, but if he
- 17:06Speaker 1: goes again next year then he would have the multiple.
- 17:08Speaker 1: Then then he has it is the biggest fifth year option.
- 17:10Speaker 1: By the way, next year, I believe it's Jack Campbell.
- 17:14Speaker 1: It is not Jack Campbells like for some reason, Jack
- 17:17Speaker 1: Campbell has like a twenty one or two. Jack Campbell's
- 17:20Speaker 1: twenty two million. Yeah, he is in the one Pro
- 17:22Speaker 1: Bowl category, yeah, which I don't get. Four players who
- 17:25Speaker 1: have hit the multiple Pro Bowl category. Jamior gives a
- 17:28Speaker 1: fourteen million, Devin Witherspoon at twenty one million, yeah, Jalen
- 17:32Speaker 1: Carter at twenty six million, Wow, and your guys Zay
- 17:35Speaker 1: Flowers at twenty eight million, the largest fifth year off.
- 17:38Speaker 2: So those ones are a little bit different because you
- 17:42Speaker 2: might actually be able to save some money.
- 17:44Speaker 1: By the way, the reason is there, it's by position.
- 17:46Speaker 1: They're different.
- 17:47Speaker 2: It's based off of the percentage of like the top
- 17:51Speaker 2: ten receivers in the league or top.
- 17:53Speaker 1: So like results in Witherspoon's numbers for one in multiple
- 17:55Speaker 1: are the same, but wide receiver because the quarterbacks if
- 17:59Speaker 1: the quarterbacks got there would be forty six million.
- 18:01Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 18:02Speaker 1: So it's actually so Drake May's fifty year option, if
- 18:05Speaker 1: he makes no other Pro Bowls, probably gonna be around
- 18:07Speaker 1: fifty because that's going to go up.
- 18:09Speaker 2: Uh no, well yeah, because he's a quarterback. I don't
- 18:12Speaker 2: know exactly you can look at it. I don't have
- 18:14Speaker 2: any I mean right now. Yeah, but they have quarterbacks
- 18:17Speaker 2: that were drafted in twenty three right, so right, so
- 18:19Speaker 2: if you look at that was Bryce Young and Bryce
- 18:22Speaker 2: Young CJ. So Bryce Young had multiple Pro Bowls. Forty
- 18:26Speaker 2: six million, Yeah, so that would be what Drake Mays
- 18:28Speaker 2: is gonna be.
- 18:28Speaker 1: But it's it's based on the average of the highest
- 18:32Speaker 1: pape right right.
- 18:33Speaker 2: Which is what inflation will kick in.
- 18:35Speaker 1: So that's what I'm saying. It's probably gonna be, if
- 18:37Speaker 1: not around fifty, over fifty.
- 18:39Speaker 2: Yeah, it's gonna be a lot of money.
- 18:40Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 18:40Speaker 2: So, uh that's a good point. So that's all the
- 18:44Speaker 2: cap stuff. Sorry to kind of boggy down with all
- 18:48Speaker 2: the numbers in accounting, But again, I I enjoy all
- 18:51Speaker 2: the emails you get out of I know that people
- 18:53Speaker 2: don't care about the cap, and I hear this all
- 18:55Speaker 2: the time about how the cap is crap. It's not
- 18:57Speaker 2: crap to the teams, and it's not crap to you know,
- 19:02Speaker 2: the payroll and all that kind of stuff. You know,
- 19:05Speaker 2: Robert Kraft stood up there and said that they don't
- 19:08Speaker 2: necessarily hold back to the cap on a year to
- 19:11Speaker 2: year basis, is a three year period that they look
- 19:14Speaker 2: at it, but eventually they want them to be and
- 19:16Speaker 2: CAP compliant. So it is what it is. You know
- 19:20Speaker 2: that it's a At the end of the day, it's
- 19:23Speaker 2: it's still a business. It's still a payroll. What were
- 19:25Speaker 2: you going to say.
- 19:26Speaker 1: I was gonna say, I'm more of a So the
- 19:28Speaker 1: line I like is not the cap is crap. But
- 19:30Speaker 1: the CAP can be maneuvered because I think it is
- 19:34Speaker 1: there and you can manipulate it. But you have to
- 19:37Speaker 1: actually go about manipulating it, and that's a process and
- 19:40Speaker 1: that can take money and effort and things like that.
- 19:42Speaker 1: So you can't just ignore it. You can't blow by
- 19:44Speaker 1: it like in the NBA, but it is it can
- 19:48Speaker 1: be manipulated.
- 19:49Speaker 2: Yeah, well the NBA has the never it's a separate conversation.
- 19:53Speaker 1: You can blow by the NBA cap. I mean there's
- 19:55Speaker 1: a penalty that comes with it. I guess but not
- 19:57Speaker 1: with the aprons, not anymore. You can if you well
- 20:00Speaker 1: you can in the NFL too, But that's true, all right,
- 20:02Speaker 1: fair enough, yeah, okay, anyways, uh not, the NHL is
- 20:07Speaker 1: the best salary cap is a five million dollar contract.
- 20:09Speaker 1: It costs five million dollars. That's the cap.
- 20:11Speaker 2: I don't we don't need to get to a whole cap.
- 20:13Speaker 2: I'm just saying subjective. It's subjective because.
- 20:18Speaker 1: As as somebody trying to follow the sport, five year,
- 20:22Speaker 1: twenty five million dollar contract, five million dollar cap hit
- 20:24Speaker 1: each year, beautiful, okay.
- 20:26Speaker 2: So in terms of trying to follow it, yeah, no doubt.
- 20:30Speaker 2: In terms of trying to build a roster, it's the
- 20:32Speaker 2: worst because it's actually a hard to.
- 20:34Speaker 1: Tap because it works. Yeah, it's fair okay.
- 20:37Speaker 2: Right, So like if you if you have a deep
- 20:40Speaker 2: pockets owner that's willing to spend, then NHL salary cap
- 20:44Speaker 2: stinks for you because you're not you know, you can't
- 20:47Speaker 2: just pay for a championship.
- 20:49Speaker 1: And another place, facilities, coaches, things like that. But that's
- 20:52Speaker 1: not I just think it's I wish it was just
- 20:55Speaker 1: five million dollar contract, five million dollar cap hit.
- 20:57Speaker 2: All right, let's let's not let's move on from that,
- 21:01Speaker 2: there there's a you know, there's some Pro Bowl you
- 21:03Speaker 2: know snubs. You know the Patriots of twelve and three,
- 21:05Speaker 2: they only have two Pro bowlers. The biggest one is
- 21:07Speaker 2: definitely Marcus Jones as a as a returner. But Jamiri
- 21:11Speaker 2: Dka returns kickoffs and punts for the Titans and does
- 21:14Speaker 2: it both well, and Marcus Jones just a punt returner.
- 21:17Speaker 2: So Marcus Jones matched Chamiri dk in terms of punt
- 21:21Speaker 2: return production, but Jamiri Dkay also on top of that,
- 21:24Speaker 2: has all of his kickoff return production.
- 21:26Speaker 1: Do you make a case for Marcus Jones to make
- 21:28Speaker 1: it as a corner too?
- 21:30Speaker 2: I think you make a case. I don't think it's
- 21:32Speaker 2: a good enough one, but I think you can make
- 21:33Speaker 2: a case. There's only three, right.
- 21:36Speaker 1: Oh yeah, that's right. Yeah, And you know you got Stingley,
- 21:40Speaker 1: you got Sir Tan. I don't know who the Gonzales stuh.
- 21:44Speaker 2: So, yeah, I guess, like, could you argue that Marcus
- 21:47Speaker 2: Jones has had a better year than Gonzalez? I guess
- 21:49Speaker 2: you could, But I don't think that that's gonna You're
- 21:53Speaker 2: not gonna win that argument, I don't think all right. Anyways,
- 21:56Speaker 2: So the snubs were you know, kind of going to
- 21:59Speaker 2: the the negati here a little bit on my list
- 22:02Speaker 2: the snubs Marcus Jones, which we just said that is
- 22:06Speaker 2: in some ways kind of a technicality because there's only
- 22:09Speaker 2: one returner for both punts and kickoffs, and like I said,
- 22:12Speaker 2: DK does both. The other one that I thought was
- 22:15Speaker 2: a little bit sneaky. I got some pushback about this too.
- 22:19Speaker 2: Hunter Henry, I think was in the running for a
- 22:23Speaker 2: tight end.
- 22:23Speaker 1: Now.
- 22:24Speaker 2: Travis Kelcey has the Taylor Swift vote, which obviously helps
- 22:28Speaker 2: him with the fan vote, but he had a really
- 22:31Speaker 2: good season he did. I actually think that he was
- 22:34Speaker 2: worthy of being in the Pro Bowl. Brock Bauers is
- 22:37Speaker 2: the other AFC tight end who matched Hunter Henry in
- 22:42Speaker 2: twelve games, but he only played twelve games, you know,
- 22:45Speaker 2: and so I think that that's different in terms of,
- 22:48Speaker 2: you know, the advanced metrics. I actually could make a
- 22:50Speaker 2: pretty good case for Hunter Henry being like a top
- 22:53Speaker 2: five tight end in the NFL this year because a
- 22:55Speaker 2: lot of his production comes on third down, you know,
- 23:00Speaker 2: red zone targets, like big kind of high leverage type
- 23:03Speaker 2: of plays that swing games. So I thought Hunter Henry
- 23:07Speaker 2: was a little bit of a snub. This year as well.
- 23:10Speaker 2: Did you have any other ones? I didn't really feel
- 23:12Speaker 2: too strongly about anybody else being on here.
- 23:15Speaker 1: I mean there were some guys and you go, and
- 23:16Speaker 1: I think it's important you go look at who else
- 23:18Speaker 1: is there? Like you know in my mind because I
- 23:19Speaker 1: was looking at who is up there in the voting. Yeah,
- 23:22Speaker 1: initially and like okay, like who are they up against?
- 23:25Speaker 1: Like who was it that I saw? I was like,
- 23:28Speaker 1: oh yeah, I could see it. And then I looked
- 23:30Speaker 1: at who else was there? But like Andy Burgallis I
- 23:32Speaker 1: think at one point was the second kicker in the AFC.
- 23:35Speaker 1: But you look at what Keymie Fairbairn has done this year,
- 23:37Speaker 1: and like, okay, I get it. Julian Ashby at one
- 23:39Speaker 1: point was the top vote getter for long snappers in
- 23:41Speaker 1: the AFC, and then I guess that changed.
- 23:43Speaker 2: So the voting, I'm gonna get this wrong, but the
- 23:48Speaker 2: voting that they put out, yeah, they're weekly voting. It
- 23:52Speaker 2: doesn't tabulate all the votes, Okay, So I'm pretty sure
- 23:57Speaker 2: that that is just the ballots that get submitted Patriots
- 24:02Speaker 2: NFL dot com. All of the hashtag Pro Bowl votes
- 24:06Speaker 2: get counted later on. So that's why you saw a
- 24:09Speaker 2: lot of like crazy swings, like Josh Allen jumped Drake May.
- 24:12Speaker 2: Drake May was leading the Pro Bowl vote the entire
- 24:15Speaker 2: way and then somehow Josh Allen jumped him at the
- 24:18Speaker 2: last second. A lot of that has to do with
- 24:21Speaker 2: with that, with the with like the social media votes
- 24:24Speaker 2: and all that kind of stuff. Fair enough, all right,
- 24:26Speaker 2: Pro Bowl, that's Pro Bowl. On the negative side of
- 24:31Speaker 2: the injuries the Patriots, we'll find out later today. I
- 24:34Speaker 2: think this is one of the more interesting practices of
- 24:36Speaker 2: the season from this perspective because now that we found
- 24:40Speaker 2: out that Jared Wilson is also in concussion protocol. There
- 24:43Speaker 2: were ten different guys that visited the medical tent on
- 24:47Speaker 2: Sunday night, and now you are nine different guys that
- 24:49Speaker 2: visit the medical tent, and now Jared Wilson makes it ten.
- 24:53Speaker 2: And that's just the ones that we know of right now.
- 24:56Speaker 2: So the Patriots have all sorts of injuries. It sounds
- 24:58Speaker 2: like as Tonga's regular season might be over. Ian Rappaport
- 25:03Speaker 2: reported that that's a one to two week injury. I
- 25:06Speaker 2: don't see any reason to push it, you know, against
- 25:09Speaker 2: the Jets and the Dolphins. So my guess is that
- 25:11Speaker 2: we're going to see him in the playoffs, first round
- 25:13Speaker 2: of the playoffs or Patriots first game of the playoffs.
- 25:16Speaker 2: But the other big ones are these guys in concussion
- 25:19Speaker 2: protocol because the percentage is low, you know, twenty five
- 25:23Speaker 2: to thirty percent. I think it is of guys that
- 25:26Speaker 2: get put in the protocol and then play the following week.
- 25:29Speaker 2: So Trevon Henderson, Kaishawn Boody, Jared Wilson. So there's a
- 25:34Speaker 2: really really high percentage chance that the Patriots will play
- 25:37Speaker 2: the Jets without those three players. Now the Jets think
- 25:40Speaker 2: so it's not.
- 25:41Speaker 1: Should be able to beat the Chests without those guys.
- 25:43Speaker 2: Yes, But but just in terms of roster management and
- 25:46Speaker 2: how this all shakes out, you know, they did sign Mitchell.
- 25:50Speaker 1: I was gonna say, like, Elijah Mitchell be available, might
- 25:54Speaker 1: have to play in this game. Elijah Mitchell being available
- 25:57Speaker 1: this time of year, and he just got cut I think, yeah,
- 26:01Speaker 1: within the last couple Yeah, he got released on December twentieth.
- 26:06Speaker 1: I like, I like Terrell Jennings, I do, and he's
- 26:09Speaker 1: on IR right now and he'll I think he's eligible
- 26:13Speaker 1: to return into the first playoff game. But like, yeah,
- 26:16Speaker 1: Elijah Mitchell played a decent sized role for a Niners
- 26:19Speaker 1: team that went to the Super Bowl. Yeah, for multiple
- 26:21Speaker 1: Niners teams that went to the Super Bowl. As a
- 26:23Speaker 1: third back. Like, he's more in line with what Antonio
- 26:28Speaker 1: Gibson was doing, I would say than some of those
- 26:30Speaker 1: younger guys that they're trying to make a fit. So
- 26:33Speaker 1: I think that's sneaky, great signing. I wonder, excuse me,
- 26:36Speaker 1: I wonder if there's you know, maybe actually something a
- 26:40Speaker 1: little bit like see how he runs without Treyvon Henderson
- 26:43Speaker 1: out there, He's probably gonna be the second back. I
- 26:44Speaker 1: would think it's elevated next to Monre Stevenson and you
- 26:47Speaker 1: know he's running, well, that's somebody I would trust to
- 26:50Speaker 1: carry the ball a little bit in the playoffs. He's
- 26:51Speaker 1: done it before, so I played in eight playoff games.
- 26:55Speaker 1: He's eighty four carries in eight career playoff games.
- 26:57Speaker 2: Sir Andre Stevenson played like eighty two percent of the
- 27:00Speaker 2: snaps last week because Trey Von Henderson got hurting game
- 27:03Speaker 2: and you know they weren't really I guess, right and
- 27:07Speaker 2: Dearness Johnson at all. So you know this is something
- 27:10Speaker 2: that they're going to have to manage that running back.
- 27:12Speaker 1: But this is a guy I think you can comfortably
- 27:14Speaker 1: give the ball five to ten times a game.
- 27:17Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean in these two games for sure. I
- 27:19Speaker 2: mean this is like Stephen Jackson twenty fifteen territory.
- 27:22Speaker 1: I think he's better than Stephen Jackson. The Stephen Jackson
- 27:25Speaker 1: thought crossed my mind.
- 27:26Speaker 2: Okay, but I'm just saying, like, this is not in
- 27:28Speaker 2: this spot. Absolutely, they're not going to get do I
- 27:31Speaker 2: give him the ball against the Houston Texans on wildcard
- 27:34Speaker 2: and you know, a wildcard game. I don't know yet,
- 27:36Speaker 2: not gonna have to see how he looks.
- 27:37Speaker 1: Well, to see how he looks. But I'm saying like
- 27:39Speaker 1: he's only Stephen Jackson was what thirty three?
- 27:42Speaker 2: Yeah, they called him off his couch.
- 27:43Speaker 1: Yeah right, it was a Philip Rivers situation.
- 27:45Speaker 2: It wasn't that draftsic, it.
- 27:46Speaker 1: Wasn't that drastic, but it was close to Elijah Mitchell's
- 27:49Speaker 1: twenty six twenty seven. I'm not and again he has
- 27:52Speaker 1: some experience.
- 27:52Speaker 2: Well, we'll see Kaijan Boody and you have Kyle Williams.
- 27:56Speaker 2: You know, obviously he think he can play James White,
- 28:00Speaker 2: but they have you know, Kyle Williams will play more
- 28:02Speaker 2: Matt Collins will play probably more on the outside. You know,
- 28:05Speaker 2: you can, you can kind of manage that one.
- 28:07Speaker 1: I'm looking forward to Williams getting some more reps. I
- 28:09Speaker 1: think this will be good opportunity. I think he's clearly
- 28:12Speaker 1: come away since he was kind of struggling in the
- 28:15Speaker 1: middle of the season. He looks a lot more comfortable now.
- 28:18Speaker 1: It hasn't been the high volume role, which is nothing
- 28:19Speaker 1: wrong with that. I like the role he's in, but
- 28:21Speaker 1: I'm interested to see what he can do with a
- 28:22Speaker 1: little more opportunities.
- 28:23Speaker 2: So, you know, honestly, time to get it.
- 28:25Speaker 1: Not you know, happy that that booty's hurt, but is
- 28:28Speaker 1: a big opportunity I think for Kyle Williams.
- 28:29Speaker 2: Yeah, this is the time to get it. I mean,
- 28:31Speaker 2: he's these two games are aren't games that they should win,
- 28:35Speaker 2: you know, pretty handily. So this is a good time
- 28:37Speaker 2: to get the rookie involved and get him some some
- 28:40Speaker 2: high volume snaps and see what he can do in
- 28:43Speaker 2: a bigger role. Jared Wilson, we mentioned, you know, with
- 28:45Speaker 2: Ben Brown. I'm sure Brent Brown will We'll get the
- 28:48Speaker 2: start at left card if necessary.
- 28:50Speaker 1: So not, I think running back is.
- 28:51Speaker 2: Probably the most complicated one right now, and then I
- 28:54Speaker 2: would also mentione, now Milton Williams coming back potentially lessons
- 28:58Speaker 2: this a little bit. But josh A Farmer goes to
- 29:00Speaker 2: injured reserve, he could technically come back, but now we're
- 29:05Speaker 2: talking about him coming back and like the AFC Championship
- 29:08Speaker 2: Game or the Super Bowl or something like that. So
- 29:11Speaker 2: his season is, you know, could be over at this point.
- 29:15Speaker 2: So you have Joshua Farmer on ir, you have Kiris Tonga,
- 29:19Speaker 2: you know, dealing with a foot injury. So Melon Williams
- 29:23Speaker 2: comes back that kind of you know, fills one of
- 29:25Speaker 2: those two spots. Yeah, but you you are, you know,
- 29:28Speaker 2: a little thin, maybe one body short at defensive tackles.
- 29:32Speaker 2: So does that mean a elevation for Jeremiah Farms, who's
- 29:36Speaker 2: been elevated twice? Maybe you know, they went with Taylor
- 29:40Speaker 2: the last time, Leonard Taylor got it. Last time, they
- 29:43Speaker 2: elevated a big boy. So maybe that's the route that
- 29:47Speaker 2: they go. But they'll probably have an elevation on the
- 29:49Speaker 2: defensive line, I would think, because you don't know what
- 29:52Speaker 2: you know, you don't want to expect Melon Williams to
- 29:53Speaker 2: come in and play you know seventy eighty percent.
- 29:56Speaker 1: I wouldn't be surprised we've seen elevate. I think those
- 29:58Speaker 1: are two spots he elevated running back in def to tackle.
- 30:00Speaker 2: Yep. Absolutely, So there's a lot going on there, and
- 30:04Speaker 2: I think in the second hour of the show we
- 30:05Speaker 2: can talk maybe a little bit about how the Patriots
- 30:08Speaker 2: handle these two games from injuries and more so, like
- 30:12Speaker 2: the banged up guys right in, you know, guys like splaying,
- 30:15Speaker 2: guys like Milton Williams, Tonga, you know, these players I
- 30:19Speaker 2: would expect to be on some sort of you know management,
- 30:23Speaker 2: you know, these last two weeks of this season. So
- 30:26Speaker 2: that's all the news. Took us a little while to
- 30:28Speaker 2: get through that. So we'll try to go as fast
- 30:31Speaker 2: as we can through the game recap because I know
- 30:34Speaker 2: that everybody probably wants to weigh in, and we'll take
- 30:37Speaker 2: your calls and emails here shortly. But let's get into
- 30:40Speaker 2: this Baltimore game, which I felt like was a weird
- 30:43Speaker 2: game to be at. There's a lot of sort of
- 30:46Speaker 2: emotional swings. You know, the Ravens come out hot, they're
- 30:49Speaker 2: playing well offensively to start with Lamar Jackson healthy, Derrek
- 30:54Speaker 2: Henry fumbles that was sort of like the first turning
- 30:57Speaker 2: point of the game. Then Lamar jacks and gets hurt
- 31:00Speaker 2: in the second quarter. That's sort of the second turning
- 31:02Speaker 2: point of the game. Then Tyler Huntley puts together a
- 31:07Speaker 2: decent third quarter and they kind of take the lead,
- 31:09Speaker 2: and then the Patriots obviously come back there in the
- 31:12Speaker 2: fourth quarter. But I think the biggest thing that, you know,
- 31:16Speaker 2: I just want to start. Let's just get into the
- 31:19Speaker 2: good and bad. I don't really have a great big
- 31:21Speaker 2: picture thought with all that news in my head. Doo, okay,
- 31:24Speaker 2: what's your big picture thought?
- 31:26Speaker 1: It's just building off of what I said last week.
- 31:27Speaker 1: And I know people are probably sick of hearing about
- 31:29Speaker 1: the twenty one point loss, but it's hard not to
- 31:31Speaker 1: look at those two games together because we talked about
- 31:32Speaker 1: it a lot of what like the Ravens game, a
- 31:36Speaker 1: lot of opportunities presented that game more than we ended
- 31:38Speaker 1: up knowing going into it, were opportunities to right the
- 31:42Speaker 1: wrongs and answer the questions left after that Bill's lost.
- 31:45Speaker 1: And I would say they overwhelmingly, not entirely, overwhelmingly checked
- 31:50Speaker 1: a lot of the boxes they failed to check against
- 31:52Speaker 1: the Bills, And that's just an encouraging sign. Growth has
- 31:55Speaker 1: been such an important thing for this team this year.
- 31:57Speaker 1: How many times have we come on here and even
- 31:59Speaker 1: after they've won, like, oh, they struggled with this, or
- 32:01Speaker 1: they struggled with that, and then the next week they
- 32:03Speaker 1: come out and they fix it. And it's a credit
- 32:04Speaker 1: to Mike Vrabel and the coaching staff. And I think
- 32:07Speaker 1: this was a maybe the prime example of, you know,
- 32:10Speaker 1: whether you want to talk about some of the issues.
- 32:13Speaker 1: You know, Drake May's issues, issues that he had and
- 32:15Speaker 1: he wasn't perfect in this game, but he fixed him
- 32:17Speaker 1: when he needed to. Whether you want to talk about
- 32:18Speaker 1: some of their issues in terms of the receivers getting open,
- 32:21Speaker 1: the questions about Stefan Diggs and where he was at
- 32:23Speaker 1: after that game, obviously the fourth quarter, the ability to
- 32:25Speaker 1: come back, those questions were loud after they lost to
- 32:28Speaker 1: the Bills. The only one that didn't really answer was
- 32:30Speaker 1: the run game question, but we talked about it earlier.
- 32:32Speaker 1: That's it's gonna be hard to answer that question without
- 32:34Speaker 1: Millon Williams. But I just I was really impressed that
- 32:38Speaker 1: I think you kind of have to look at that
- 32:40Speaker 1: game in the Bills game together and hey, they struggled
- 32:42Speaker 1: with all this stuff, came back and fixed it, especially
- 32:45Speaker 1: against I know, the Ravens offense isn't what we thought
- 32:47Speaker 1: it was going to be. The Ravens defense was full
- 32:49Speaker 1: go in that game, and they answered a lot of
- 32:50Speaker 1: questions against a good Ravens defense.
- 32:52Speaker 2: It's all fair points. I would just say, you know,
- 32:55Speaker 2: this is sort of why getting caught up in like
- 32:58Speaker 2: the week to week referendum of a team is what
- 33:01Speaker 2: we do, and it's what all of us do, fans
- 33:04Speaker 2: and media like. But this is why it's dangerous. Because
- 33:08Speaker 2: the Patriots lose that game to Buffalo, and all of
- 33:11Speaker 2: a sudden, the real loud people are saying that they're fraudulent,
- 33:15Speaker 2: right because they played a good team finally and they lost.
- 33:18Speaker 2: The other people are saying, you know, they can't come
- 33:20Speaker 2: back in the fourth quarter, Drake May's not clutch. They
- 33:22Speaker 2: can't lead game winning drives all based off of one
- 33:27Speaker 2: fourth quarter, like one second half of a game. And
- 33:30Speaker 2: then the very next week they do all the things
- 33:32Speaker 2: that everybody said they couldn't do. And now you know,
- 33:35Speaker 2: now the narrative flips and it's like, I get, this
- 33:38Speaker 2: is what we do, but this is why you know,
- 33:41Speaker 2: sample size and seeing things from multiple games and you know,
- 33:45Speaker 2: full seasons and all that kind of stuff is really
- 33:47Speaker 2: really important because just because he did it on Sunday
- 33:51Speaker 2: night doesn't mean that he's going to do it again
- 33:53Speaker 2: if they're in the same position in the playoffs. And
- 33:56Speaker 2: just because he didn't do it against Buffalo means that
- 33:58Speaker 2: he was going to be a much time failure for
- 34:01Speaker 2: his entire career. And I just feel like that that
- 34:04Speaker 2: was sort of what that told you was that this
- 34:06Speaker 2: is really it's too soon probably to determine whether or
- 34:11Speaker 2: not he's got that Brady clutch ginge and no one's Brady.
- 34:14Speaker 2: But you know what I'm trying to.
- 34:15Speaker 1: Say, Well, but I think that's also part of what
- 34:17Speaker 1: makes the NFL so interesting. And yeah, you don't want
- 34:19Speaker 1: to get caught up too much in the week to week,
- 34:21Speaker 1: but this is how like there's a lot of the
- 34:23Speaker 1: sporters answering questions. Questions come up and how do you
- 34:26Speaker 1: answer them, how do you respond to them? So I
- 34:27Speaker 1: think this was a you know, those two games are
- 34:30Speaker 1: a great example what makes the NFL so good.
- 34:32Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely, that's all fair. The other other thing I
- 34:35Speaker 2: was just going to say on the Drake mayfront, because
- 34:37Speaker 2: there's a lot of good stuff to talk about with
- 34:38Speaker 2: Drake may I just kind of pushed back a little
- 34:41Speaker 2: bit on the commentary that he was bad for the
- 34:45Speaker 2: first three quarters of this game. I don't think he
- 34:48Speaker 2: was bad at all. I may be inconsistent, and you know,
- 34:51Speaker 2: he had some bad plays, but he also had some
- 34:54Speaker 2: terrific plays for the first three quarters of this game.
- 34:57Speaker 2: And if you look at their drive chart for the
- 34:59Speaker 2: first half, they were in scoring terry territory on all
- 35:02Speaker 2: four drives in the first half. They were moving the
- 35:04Speaker 2: ball the entire game. Like this wasn't one of those
- 35:07Speaker 2: games more like the Buffalo game in the second half
- 35:10Speaker 2: where the offense just went completely cold.
- 35:12Speaker 1: No, it was the turnovers, which we'll get to it,
- 35:14Speaker 1: but it was the turnovers.
- 35:15Speaker 2: So I, you know, I charted these things and I
- 35:18Speaker 2: try to keep you know, week to week charting on this.
- 35:21Speaker 2: You know, in the first three quarters of this game,
- 35:24Speaker 2: I had him with like six really high level plays,
- 35:26Speaker 2: you know, whatever you want to call him, plus plays,
- 35:28Speaker 2: big time throws whatever. You know. He opening drive layers
- 35:32Speaker 2: went into Stefon Diggs for twenty five yards. That's just
- 35:35Speaker 2: a ridiculous throw. You know, It's just a great throw
- 35:37Speaker 2: to a crossing route to digs the third down deep
- 35:41Speaker 2: dig to mac Collins was another great throw in this game.
- 35:45Speaker 2: You know, threw them open on the second zone window
- 35:47Speaker 2: there over the middle of the field. That was followed
- 35:50Speaker 2: up immediately by the back shoulder to Austin Hooper. Same
- 35:53Speaker 2: drive got them down for a touchdowns back. Yeah, on
- 35:57Speaker 2: the second drive of the game. He had a third
- 36:00Speaker 2: three yard crossing route to Diggs as well in the
- 36:02Speaker 2: third quarter. That was a big play in this game.
- 36:05Speaker 2: And he put that ball on Hunter Henry's hands on
- 36:07Speaker 2: that little wide delay action that in Hunter Henry just
- 36:10Speaker 2: couldn't finish through Kyle van Noy, Like that was a
- 36:12Speaker 2: perfect throw, you know, he put it right on him.
- 36:14Speaker 2: So I had that as another one that was a
- 36:16Speaker 2: good throw or a plus play by Drake may So
- 36:19Speaker 2: I ended up having, you know, six plus plays in
- 36:22Speaker 2: the first three quarters. And really the only true negatives
- 36:26Speaker 2: were the two turnovers. And we'll get to him, like,
- 36:27Speaker 2: I'm not trying to absolve him with the two turnovers,
- 36:30Speaker 2: but I didn't feel like this was by any means
- 36:33Speaker 2: like the Buffalo second half where it was a complete
- 36:36Speaker 2: kind of no show. In the second half of that
- 36:38Speaker 2: game against the Bills, he had some really really good plays.
- 36:42Speaker 2: He was moving and navigating the pocket exceptionally well throughout
- 36:46Speaker 2: this entire game under a lot of pressure with some
- 36:50Speaker 2: banged up backups on the offensive line, and I thought
- 36:53Speaker 2: he was really, really good. Now the fourth quarter he
- 36:56Speaker 2: was absolutely tremendous. You know, that was a whole nother
- 36:59Speaker 2: level it. But I thought he was fine through three quarters.
- 37:03Speaker 2: Outside the turnovers. The fourth quarter was Brady esque. You know,
- 37:08Speaker 2: you go twelve for fourteen, one hundred and thirty nine yards, two.
- 37:12Speaker 1: Touchdown round arguably was an incompletion. Oh the booty one, Yeah,
- 37:18Speaker 1: I mean the Kyle Williams all right, that's the Kyle
- 37:20Speaker 1: Williams on was like late in the third quarter. First
- 37:21Speaker 1: the Kyle Williams touchdown is that's a great throw too,
- 37:24Speaker 1: one of his best throws of the season. You know what,
- 37:25Speaker 1: that one reminded me of a little bit. And maybe
- 37:27Speaker 1: it's just because it's against the Ravens. Although I actually
- 37:29Speaker 1: didn't put that together until I said this to my
- 37:32Speaker 1: buddy and he was like, it's against the Ravens, You're
- 37:33Speaker 1: being lazy. The Tom Brady twenty fourteen Divisional game throw
- 37:37Speaker 1: to Brandon Lafel is similar. It's a little kind kind
- 37:40Speaker 1: of the same sort you gotta just drop it in
- 37:42Speaker 1: over the top. And again I came up with that
- 37:43Speaker 1: before I realized they were both against the Ravens.
- 37:45Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, he was just he was lights out
- 37:48Speaker 2: in the fourth quarter. I had him seven plus plays
- 37:51Speaker 2: just in the fourth quarter alone, and you know, he
- 37:54Speaker 2: was just excellent. And I think that, you know, just
- 37:56Speaker 2: to kind of get into some of the game winning
- 37:57Speaker 2: drives stuff. You know, obviously both drives were huge, so
- 38:02Speaker 2: I kind of put them together in a lot of ways,
- 38:04Speaker 2: but just specifically on the game winning drive itself. What
- 38:07Speaker 2: I thought was the most encouraging about how he handled
- 38:10Speaker 2: the game winning drive. I didn't think he did very
- 38:13Speaker 2: good against Buffalo in terms of just keeping the offense
- 38:17Speaker 2: on schedule, moving the chains, taking the easy throws underneath,
- 38:21Speaker 2: you know, kind of taking the profits. That's oftentimes what
- 38:25Speaker 2: leads to good game winning drives is just kind of
- 38:28Speaker 2: taking what the defense has given you at first, Like, yes,
- 38:31Speaker 2: you are eventually going to need a big play or
- 38:33Speaker 2: two in there, and they got that with the Matt
- 38:37Speaker 2: Collins crosser right out of the shoot on the first play,
- 38:40Speaker 2: kind of gets them that moving and gets that first
- 38:42Speaker 2: first down that's always crucial. And then the digs fourth
- 38:46Speaker 2: down play, So they did have two chunk plays on
- 38:48Speaker 2: the drive, but he also had completions of nine to
- 38:50Speaker 2: eight and six yards. And I thought that those players
- 38:53Speaker 2: were low key, very very important to just keeping the
- 38:57Speaker 2: offense on schedule.
- 38:58Speaker 1: You got to go the time whole apple at once.
- 39:01Speaker 2: Positive plays, keeping it moving, that sort of thing. I
- 39:05Speaker 2: always go back to Super Bowl thirty six. Now, they
- 39:08Speaker 2: only needed the field goal in that situation, but the
- 39:11Speaker 2: very first play of that game winning drive to for
- 39:15Speaker 2: Tom Brady's a checkdown to JR. Redmon right, like does
- 39:17Speaker 2: a little checkdown over the middle. It wasn't a downfield throw.
- 39:21Speaker 2: It wasn't, you know, Brandon lafel to you know in
- 39:24Speaker 2: the twenty fourteen Divisional round against Baltimore. It was just
- 39:27Speaker 2: a little dump off to a running back and it
- 39:30Speaker 2: just kind of gets the whole thing moving from there.
- 39:32Speaker 1: Hasn't a hasn't Bill or Brady or somebody said like
- 39:37Speaker 1: they didn't hit the checkdown of Redmand they were gonna
- 39:39Speaker 1: sit on it or something.
- 39:40Speaker 2: It's possible.
- 39:40Speaker 1: I don't actually watched that drive yesterday.
- 39:44Speaker 2: So Jr. Redman's a little checkdown, Wiggy Jermaine Wiggins, like,
- 39:49Speaker 2: get some like five yards at the very end of
- 39:51Speaker 2: the drive. That puts the field goal a more makeable
- 39:53Speaker 2: field goal. I think it was a forty nine yard
- 39:55Speaker 2: field goal, so we're talking about like a fifty plus
- 39:57Speaker 2: yard shodow. We were there, and there's just I've seen
- 40:01Speaker 2: that drive so many times that I could probably tell
- 40:03Speaker 2: you every throw.
- 40:04Speaker 1: The big throw on that drive is obviously the Troy Brown.
- 40:06Speaker 1: Troy Brown crossed the same thing two years later, it's
- 40:08Speaker 1: the Dion Branch crosser, and beyond that it's a lot
- 40:11Speaker 1: of dink and dunk and with Drake May it was
- 40:14Speaker 1: the same thing. You want it sure, Jr. Redmond five yards, Jr.
- 40:18Speaker 1: Redmond eight yards incomplete. I think that was a spike. Jr.
- 40:22Speaker 1: Redman eleven yards incomplete, Troy Brown for twenty three, Wiggi
- 40:26Speaker 1: for six and then the spike.
- 40:28Speaker 2: So this is my point, right, like how many Jr.
- 40:31Speaker 2: Redmonds did you just say? There's a little dump offs,
- 40:34Speaker 2: little checkdowns to j R. Redman and they're not the
- 40:37Speaker 2: big plays. The big play is obviously the Troy Brown one,
- 40:39Speaker 2: which we've all seen a million times. But that's just
- 40:42Speaker 2: how you matriculate the ball. Down the field on a
- 40:45Speaker 2: game winning drive, and Drake may in this game just
- 40:47Speaker 2: did such a better job of that than he did
- 40:49Speaker 2: against Buffalo. Right in Buffalo, you remember the third downplay
- 40:53Speaker 2: against Buffalo where he just throws it to the sideline
- 40:56Speaker 2: and complete the Trevon Henderson and kind of into no
- 40:59Speaker 2: man's land. This game, it was a lot more manageable,
- 41:02Speaker 2: like he was making the smart decision.
- 41:04Speaker 1: Not to keep comparing Drake to Brady here, but I
- 41:06Speaker 1: the Panthers on was a little more explosive than I
- 41:08Speaker 1: remembered incomplete thirteen yards to Troy Brown, twenty yards to
- 41:12Speaker 1: Troy Brown, thirteen yards of Troy Brown, four yards to
- 41:14Speaker 1: Daniel Graham, seventeen yards a d On Branch, and then
- 41:17Speaker 1: they kicked the field goal. But I think some of
- 41:18Speaker 1: those are like underneath catch and runs. But yes, to
- 41:20Speaker 1: your point, to go back to the point we're reminiscing Tooch, Well,
- 41:24Speaker 1: I went back, it's fine for whatever, and it was
- 41:27Speaker 1: not in relation to what Drake Maye did. It was
- 41:29Speaker 1: another conversation I was having friends. I went back and
- 41:31Speaker 1: watched the fourth quarter of Super Bowl forty nine, of course,
- 41:33Speaker 1: and then the final drive of Super Bowl thirty six,
- 41:35Speaker 1: as say, because he got a refreshment place. I'm sure
- 41:37Speaker 1: remind yourself, I clar should watch the Panthers game. Maybe
- 41:39Speaker 1: I'll do that later. But you gotta be patient on
- 41:41Speaker 1: those drives. On those games, it's you know, it's one
- 41:43Speaker 1: thing that's like thirty seconds you got to look go
- 41:45Speaker 1: to length of the field. But the two minutes, if
- 41:47Speaker 1: you manage it right, that's more than enough time to
- 41:50Speaker 1: get down the field.
- 41:51Speaker 2: I did not think that he managed it very well
- 41:54Speaker 2: against Buffalo.
- 41:55Speaker 1: He was pushing a little more. Now. I think he
- 41:56Speaker 1: had less time in that one.
- 41:58Speaker 2: But he was. He was big play on hunting against Buffalo,
- 42:01Speaker 2: and I think in this drive he was willing to
- 42:03Speaker 2: kind of take some of the easy money and just
- 42:05Speaker 2: sort of march a little bit down the field. So,
- 42:08Speaker 2: like you said, off the top of this segment, just growth,
- 42:12Speaker 2: you know, just showing, you know, correcting things and just
- 42:16Speaker 2: kind of fixing things moving forward.
- 42:19Speaker 1: I know he got they got the ball back with
- 42:20Speaker 1: two forty three and against the Bills, there's plenty of time.
- 42:22Speaker 2: So that was Drake may I thought that, you know,
- 42:26Speaker 2: I wrote this in after further review, this was the
- 42:29Speaker 2: most high level plus plays I had for Drake Man
- 42:33Speaker 2: a game this season. Now we'll get to the flip
- 42:36Speaker 2: side here in a second, but he was making some
- 42:39Speaker 2: unbelievable plays for four quarters, not just the fourth quarter,
- 42:44Speaker 2: for four quarters in this game. I thought this was
- 42:47Speaker 2: one of his best games of the year. I really did.
- 42:49Speaker 2: And this Bill's appeals Ravens defense. Let's not lose sight
- 42:53Speaker 2: of the fact that the Ravens shut out Joe Burrow
- 42:55Speaker 2: the week before. His first ever shutout as an NFL
- 42:59Speaker 2: quarterback was the week before against the same exact Ravens defense.
- 43:03Speaker 2: So this wasn't a tomato can defense. This wasn't a
- 43:07Speaker 2: bad defense defense.
- 43:09Speaker 1: I you want to critique what the Patriots defense did
- 43:12Speaker 1: against the Ravens offense without Lamar Jackson, and for some reason,
- 43:15Speaker 1: Derrek Henry like, we can have that conversation, which we will,
- 43:17Speaker 1: which we will. H that was that was a real
- 43:20Speaker 1: deal Ravens defense that they moved the ball on.
- 43:22Speaker 2: Yep, absolutely all right. So next positive, you know, good
- 43:26Speaker 2: thing here we got a wax poetic a little bit
- 43:29Speaker 2: about Stefan Diggs. I mean, this was just this was a.
- 43:33Speaker 1: Clinic like if you were a time, if you were
- 43:36Speaker 1: a young receiver, if you're a coach of like a
- 43:39Speaker 1: high school, a college team or something like that.
- 43:41Speaker 2: If you want to show a clinic.
- 43:44Speaker 1: There's nothing but teach tape.
- 43:45Speaker 2: For sixty minutes, we're oute running man zone press off
- 43:50Speaker 2: like inside outside, Like this was just an absolute clinic
- 43:55Speaker 2: by Digs, and you know, you could break down some
- 43:58Speaker 2: of the individual plays, but he was roasting that secondary
- 44:03Speaker 2: in pretty much every single way possible. His feel and
- 44:08Speaker 2: just understanding of, you know, space and voids in zone
- 44:12Speaker 2: coverage is as good as I've seen. I think the
- 44:14Speaker 2: only guy that rivals it is probably Travis Kelcey, who's
- 44:17Speaker 2: also excellent at that. But both of these guys are
- 44:21Speaker 2: doing that at the highest of levels. Like understanding where
- 44:25Speaker 2: this top spots are in zone coverage, understanding not to
- 44:28Speaker 2: run yourself into coverage when you don't have to, you know,
- 44:32Speaker 2: all these different types of things that he does know.
- 44:34Speaker 2: There are different kinds of routes. Some routes are meant
- 44:36Speaker 2: to clear out space. Some routes are meant to occupy defenders,
- 44:40Speaker 2: and you got to run those are those love of
- 44:41Speaker 2: the game routes, and you got to run those if
- 44:44Speaker 2: you're in that position. But in this game, Diggs was
- 44:47Speaker 2: in a lot of positions where he could kind of
- 44:48Speaker 2: freelance a little bit against zone coverage, and he did
- 44:51Speaker 2: that at one of the highest levels that you're going
- 44:54Speaker 2: to see anybody do it at. And then I also
- 44:56Speaker 2: thought it was really encouraging. Now, Marlon Humphrey might be
- 45:00Speaker 2: little bit on watch watch here. I don't know if
- 45:02Speaker 2: he's got much left in the take, but he was
- 45:05Speaker 2: on watch, watch, watch, wash watch.
- 45:07Speaker 1: Okay, like he said, watch watch.
- 45:10Speaker 2: He was beaten guys in man coverage too, And there's,
- 45:15Speaker 2: like you said earlier, there's a lot of chatter about
- 45:17Speaker 2: December digs and did he still have it against man coverage?
- 45:21Speaker 2: Did he still have the juice to separate against man coverage?
- 45:24Speaker 2: In this game, sixty five of his yards came against
- 45:26Speaker 2: man coverage. Beat Marlon Humphrey cleaned like a drum coming
- 45:30Speaker 2: across the field on a crossing route. So it was
- 45:32Speaker 2: good to see him be able to separate from man
- 45:36Speaker 2: to man as well. The zone stuff's awesome, but once
- 45:38Speaker 2: it comes to the playoff time, he's gonna they're gonna
- 45:41Speaker 2: get more man and he's gonna have to beat man coverage.
- 45:43Speaker 2: And he did that in this game.
- 45:44Speaker 1: I just you know, there are all these questions about
- 45:46Speaker 1: is is Dig's cook thirty one? Coming off the ACL
- 45:48Speaker 1: the December Dig stuff. The people in Buffalo got really
- 45:51Speaker 1: loud about that, sure did, and I don't. They shouldn't
- 45:55Speaker 1: need Digs to be that guy every week, and there's
- 46:00Speaker 1: few receivers, if any, that can be that guy every week,
- 46:02Speaker 1: and they really shouldn't even be that to be the
- 46:04Speaker 1: Jets to beat the Jets and the Dolphins. But the
- 46:06Speaker 1: fact that he can still flip the switch and do
- 46:08Speaker 1: that when they need to do it is very encouraging
- 46:10Speaker 1: because they are going to need him probably once or
- 46:12Speaker 1: twice to make to be that guy in the playoffs,
- 46:14Speaker 1: if not every game. So yeah, it was like he
- 46:17Speaker 1: did a couple of quiet games and his usage was
- 46:19Speaker 1: down and all that, and it was good to just
- 46:21Speaker 1: kind of see him remind everybody, hey, no, I can
- 46:23Speaker 1: still do this. I can still be the number one guy.
- 46:25Speaker 1: And then you looked at what his gravity was doing
- 46:28Speaker 1: late in that game and opening up opportunities for other players.
- 46:31Speaker 1: I mean, he was fantastic. He was that his best
- 46:34Speaker 1: game as a Patriot, or is the Bill's.
- 46:35Speaker 2: Game still the Bills game? I think is still better.
- 46:37Speaker 2: But this was really good.
- 46:38Speaker 1: It's up there.
- 46:38Speaker 2: Yeah, this was really good.
- 46:39Speaker 1: Now.
- 46:40Speaker 2: I think the number one thing too, that just to
- 46:43Speaker 2: kind of make this a bigger picture thing a little bit,
- 46:47Speaker 2: they didn't double him as much as Buffalo did, and
- 46:51Speaker 2: he torched them in single coverage opportunities. So I do
- 46:55Speaker 2: think that there's a bigger picture kind of game plan
- 46:57Speaker 2: thing going on here where Okay, you know, they play
- 47:00Speaker 2: Houston in the first round and they have Derek Stingley, Like,
- 47:02Speaker 2: maybe you don't need to double him if you put
- 47:04Speaker 2: Stingley on him, but Stingley is going to have to
- 47:06Speaker 2: travel with Diggs or you're gonna have to double him
- 47:09Speaker 2: if you don't have a player of Stinglely or like
- 47:11Speaker 2: Certan or something like that, of that caliber. So either way,
- 47:16Speaker 2: you know, Buffalo didn't have Benford in the game a
- 47:19Speaker 2: couple of weeks ago, so they doubled him because they
- 47:22Speaker 2: knew that their backup guys weren't going to be able
- 47:24Speaker 2: to hang. So I think that that's great news for
- 47:26Speaker 2: the Patriots either way. We talked so much about that
- 47:28Speaker 2: on this show, Alex. You know, the Tuesday players and
- 47:31Speaker 2: the guys that are you know, the the hierarchy guys
- 47:34Speaker 2: that can really put other people in place. You know,
- 47:36Speaker 2: does Digs get Kyle Williams open, Does he get Mac
- 47:40Speaker 2: Collins open? Does he get Hunter Henry open? Yeah? He can,
- 47:45Speaker 2: and he can't have that kind of gravity. So I
- 47:47Speaker 2: think that that's really big for them moving forward. He's
- 47:51Speaker 2: been doing this to me all year, like even going
- 47:53Speaker 2: back to training camp, where when he needs to like
- 47:56Speaker 2: pull it out in a game when he needs to
- 47:58Speaker 2: be like, all right, I need to go and be
- 48:00Speaker 2: vintage Digs tonight. He has that ability to do it.
- 48:03Speaker 2: Can he still do it seventeen games a season? Probably not,
- 48:08Speaker 2: but he can still do it when he needs to
- 48:10Speaker 2: when they are in a big spot and they need.
- 48:11Speaker 1: Him to, you know what. They're at a point where
- 48:13Speaker 1: their supporting cast is good enough that they can get
- 48:14Speaker 1: by with that for now.
- 48:15Speaker 2: Yeah, So that's Diggs a couple more on the offense,
- 48:19Speaker 2: and then I all give the defense a little bit
- 48:21Speaker 2: of flowers for one thing in particular, and then I'll
- 48:23Speaker 2: probably not give the defense much flowers after that. I
- 48:27Speaker 2: thought it was a really encouraging performance for both Kyle
- 48:30Speaker 2: Williams and ramondre Stevenson and Andre Stevenson was sneakily really
- 48:34Speaker 2: really good at it.
- 48:35Speaker 1: It's two games in a row where we're remond the
- 48:38Speaker 1: dirty work excellent and it thinks they now Henderson's hurt,
- 48:42Speaker 1: like they can't get both these guys healthy. But I
- 48:44Speaker 1: see the vision. I see the vision for this to
- 48:46Speaker 1: be a really strong running back room. We're getting there.
- 48:49Speaker 2: Yeah, he was really good in this game. Blitz pick
- 48:51Speaker 2: up that the little checkdown that he took for twenty
- 48:54Speaker 2: three yards was a great cut in the open field
- 48:55Speaker 2: that I haven't seen him move like that in a while,
- 48:59Speaker 2: you know, toe injury wear and tearor that kind of stuff.
- 49:02Speaker 2: The touchdown obviously, I think he ran a little bit
- 49:07Speaker 2: out of gas on the one deep target that he
- 49:09Speaker 2: had when he was flexed out, But overall I thought
- 49:12Speaker 2: he was He was really really good in this game.
- 49:14Speaker 2: He had some blitz pickups that were just tremendous, and
- 49:17Speaker 2: against like Kyle Hamilton, Roquand Smith, like guys that can
- 49:20Speaker 2: really blitz. He stood up Kyle Hamilton on one play
- 49:23Speaker 2: and Kyle Hamilton was stopped in his tracks. I mean,
- 49:25Speaker 2: that's hard to do. It's a really good blitzing safety
- 49:28Speaker 2: that he did that against and Kyle Williams. It's not
- 49:31Speaker 2: high volume and it's not perfect, you know, I didn't
- 49:33Speaker 2: think the third down target he had on the game
- 49:35Speaker 2: winning drive that was almost picked wasn't a great route.
- 49:38Speaker 2: But the deep targets and the big plays down the
- 49:41Speaker 2: field are starting to come more and more, and like
- 49:43Speaker 2: Drake May said yesterday, that's going to just open up
- 49:46Speaker 2: the first and second level at him. So he's just
- 49:48Speaker 2: got to learn, you know, be able to sell fade
- 49:51Speaker 2: on every single route that he runs. You know, everything
- 49:53Speaker 2: should be a fade with Kyle Williams. Get those guys
- 49:56Speaker 2: opened up and then have that ability to hit the
- 49:59Speaker 2: first and second lef But he's flashing in ways that
- 50:03Speaker 2: we didn't necessarily see with Polk Taekwon, Nikhil Hill.
- 50:07Speaker 1: He's gonna say it long and it's not all those
- 50:10Speaker 1: guys you just listed, but how long have we been
- 50:11Speaker 1: talking about them getting that speed X. You call it
- 50:14Speaker 1: the sacrificial X. That's just the guy that kind of
- 50:17Speaker 1: run goes route, runs go routes and you know, isn't
- 50:21Speaker 1: gonna get targeted a ton, but enough to keep the
- 50:23Speaker 1: defense honest, but has to be good enough on those
- 50:25Speaker 1: targets to keep the defense honest. And they've been looking
- 50:28Speaker 1: for that guy I go back twenty twenty, de mere
- 50:31Speaker 1: Bird was okay in that role. Yeah, they then sign
- 50:35Speaker 1: Nelson Agalore, he he didn't really fit. Uh, they drafted Taekwon,
- 50:40Speaker 1: he couldn't stay on the field. Like it feels like
- 50:42Speaker 1: they finally have that guy. And I still think Kay
- 50:45Speaker 1: Williams long term futures is a z and I think
- 50:48Speaker 1: he can be a high volume guy in the NFL.
- 50:50Speaker 1: But for the role he's in right now, not everybody's
- 50:55Speaker 1: gonna get ten targets and he's not in the ten
- 50:57Speaker 1: target role that's Stefan Diggs. Digs should be there. But
- 51:02Speaker 1: you can still make an impact. Kyle Williams played thirty
- 51:04Speaker 1: percent of snaps, had three targets on Sunday Night. He
- 51:08Speaker 1: made a massive impact in that game. He catches the
- 51:11Speaker 1: deep ball, he had another catcher first down, and he
- 51:12Speaker 1: sets the block on the game winning touchdown run. So
- 51:16Speaker 1: having guys that can make an impact even when they
- 51:18Speaker 1: don't have a high volume in targets, you need a
- 51:20Speaker 1: guy like that. A guy like that can help even
- 51:23Speaker 1: if this offense isn't built around him in the way.
- 51:25Speaker 1: Kyle Williams has stepped into that role from where he
- 51:28Speaker 1: was earlier in the season has been impressive and it's
- 51:30Speaker 1: helped having somebody in that role that provides what he provides.
- 51:33Speaker 2: Yeah, his speed is translated to the pro game, which
- 51:36Speaker 2: I think is the most encouraging thing. He's clearly creating
- 51:40Speaker 2: downfield separation on his deep routes and that's his game.
- 51:44Speaker 2: That's his number one part of his game. Now, the
- 51:47Speaker 2: route detail, the salesmanship, all these like nuances to route
- 51:52Speaker 2: running that I think Diggs is trying to teach him
- 51:55Speaker 2: behind the scenes. Those things are going to be the
- 51:57Speaker 2: things that determine whether or not he's going to be
- 52:00Speaker 2: a high volume guy down the road. But at the
- 52:02Speaker 2: very least he can be this guy and that's something
- 52:05Speaker 2: for late thirty.
- 52:07Speaker 1: Right, if you get that guy late in the third
- 52:09Speaker 1: and this is what he is again, I still think
- 52:10Speaker 1: he can be more. But if this is what he is,
- 52:13Speaker 1: that like, there's value in having that player.
- 52:15Speaker 2: Yep, all right, one flower for the defense turnovers. They
- 52:20Speaker 2: produced two turnovers in this game.
- 52:22Speaker 1: The chase on play was an awesome football play by
- 52:26Speaker 1: tale Chase on to chase that thing down. Yeah, hurt
- 52:29Speaker 1: and finish, right, I will say sneaky important on that play.
- 52:33Speaker 2: Del Pettis holding up Zay Flowers. You know that guy
- 52:36Speaker 2: that goes unnoticed.
- 52:37Speaker 1: They had a couple of those on the Henry one too,
- 52:39Speaker 1: is Carlton Davis holding him up.
- 52:40Speaker 2: So del Pettis. Jay Flowers comes across the middle of
- 52:44Speaker 2: the field, del Pettis gets matched up with him in
- 52:46Speaker 2: the slot, and del Pettis makes Zay Flowers stop his
- 52:49Speaker 2: feet right, and he's the guy that made Jay Flowers
- 52:52Speaker 2: cut back into the middle of the field. If del
- 52:54Speaker 2: Pettis doesn't, you know, create that leverage, then Jay Flowers
- 52:58Speaker 2: is just gonna run away and he's never going to
- 53:00Speaker 2: get even close to calevon chase On. So del Pettis
- 53:03Speaker 2: is the guy that made Zay Flowers stop and kind
- 53:06Speaker 2: of try to make a cut to get around him,
- 53:09Speaker 2: and that allowed calevon chase On, who's just hustling effort
- 53:12Speaker 2: finished all the Mike Rabel tropes like that's what that
- 53:15Speaker 2: is exemplified in one play to punch the football out there.
- 53:19Speaker 2: So that was a great play.
- 53:21Speaker 1: It's another one where again you go back to last week.
- 53:24Speaker 1: We talked about this on that show. You should be
- 53:27Speaker 1: able to get the Bills to turn the ball over.
- 53:28Speaker 1: Bills are sloppy offense. And they needed one turnover probably
- 53:32Speaker 1: changes that game, and they couldn't get it. They couldn't
- 53:34Speaker 1: do it. So it's another example where they come back
- 53:36Speaker 1: the next week and correct the wrong and hey, look
- 53:39Speaker 1: at this, you know, we're we're not just one but
- 53:41Speaker 1: two turnovers, including one at a key point in that game.
- 53:44Speaker 2: So and the Derek Henry fumble is not was not
- 53:47Speaker 2: unimportant either, because that game was they were on the
- 53:52Speaker 2: verge of maybe getting boat raced in this game. The
- 53:55Speaker 2: Ravens are going right down the field on them. The
- 53:58Speaker 2: offense was, you know, and over prone or mistake prone
- 54:01Speaker 2: at the moment, you know, to start that game, and
- 54:04Speaker 2: the Ravens were in complete control of that game in
- 54:06Speaker 2: the first quarter and Derrick Henry gets stripped and all
- 54:09Speaker 2: of a sudden it kind of at least kept the
- 54:11Speaker 2: game close and kept the Patriots in the game at
- 54:14Speaker 2: that point of the game. So the Derrick Henry fumble
- 54:17Speaker 2: just also just being there like that was kind of
- 54:20Speaker 2: a deflating moment, I thought, for the Ravens and for
- 54:22Speaker 2: the fans and for the crowd. So that was a
- 54:25Speaker 2: big play early in the game as well. But the
- 54:28Speaker 2: chase on played Mike Rable is going to be showing
- 54:30Speaker 2: that in the team meeting. I'm sure. I mean, that
- 54:32Speaker 2: was everything that they're about as a coaching staff and
- 54:35Speaker 2: as a program in one play, you know, one guy
- 54:38Speaker 2: making a sneaky good play with del Pettis another guy,
- 54:41Speaker 2: you know, full tilt to the whistle with calevon Chase
- 54:44Speaker 2: on that. That's raybl ball. You know, like that's what
- 54:47Speaker 2: everything that he wants this team to be.
- 54:51Speaker 1: I wonder, you know, going back to that fumble being
- 54:53Speaker 1: a big play. Yeah, so I know, John Harbaugh said
- 54:56Speaker 1: after the game Henry wasn't in at the end because
- 54:58Speaker 1: of the running back rotation. I you know, who knows
- 55:02Speaker 1: you can change up the running back rotation. You have
- 55:04Speaker 1: first ballot Hall of Famer back there, chance to ice
- 55:06Speaker 1: the game?
- 55:07Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 55:07Speaker 1: Is it possible they were spooked that he was going
- 55:09Speaker 1: to fumble again because he had some fumble ishoes early
- 55:12Speaker 1: in the year. He cleaned them up. But did they
- 55:14Speaker 1: look at that and say, oh, boy, like is he
- 55:16Speaker 1: gonna be able to hold on a ball? Tame? I
- 55:17Speaker 1: still would have gone, well, it's not an excuse, right,
- 55:20Speaker 1: but I you know, did that fumble maybe get in
- 55:22Speaker 1: the Ravens head? Was that fumble bigger than maybe it
- 55:24Speaker 1: even seemed in the moment, I thought.
- 55:25Speaker 2: That there was a little bit of irony with Mike
- 55:29Speaker 2: Rabel being on the other sideline Derrick Henry's old coach,
- 55:33Speaker 2: because I cannot tell you how many games Mike Rabel
- 55:37Speaker 2: closed out by just letting Derrick Henry just eat up
- 55:41Speaker 2: the rest of the clock. And that's how the Titans
- 55:44Speaker 2: won games in that era. It was just get a lead,
- 55:48Speaker 2: play with the lead in the fourth quarter, and then
- 55:50Speaker 2: it's just Derrick Henry for five minutes down your throat
- 55:53Speaker 2: and you just can't stop it, and you can't stop
- 55:55Speaker 2: the clock, and this game over. You know that that's
- 55:58Speaker 2: that's Derrick Henry at his best as late in those games.
- 56:02Speaker 2: He's one of those guys for sure that gets better
- 56:04Speaker 2: as the game goes along. So it's only fair to
- 56:07Speaker 2: point out, you know, as much as I want to
- 56:09Speaker 2: give the Patriots flowers for coming back in this game,
- 56:11Speaker 2: Lamar gets hurt. They make a really weird coaching decision
- 56:15Speaker 2: with Derrick Henry in the fourth quarter of this game.
- 56:18Speaker 2: So the Ravens gave him some help too.
- 56:19Speaker 1: They did, Yeah, they they did, but like, no, no comeback, He's.
- 56:23Speaker 2: No, I'm yeah, I'm not trying to completely you know,
- 56:26Speaker 2: take away credit, but it's it's context as worse to
- 56:29Speaker 2: share it. Anyways, Let's go to the bads and the
- 56:33Speaker 2: stuff that gets you beat. I have a tough time
- 56:36Speaker 2: putting this on the bads because they were This was
- 56:39Speaker 2: one of those games that was like a game from
- 56:42Speaker 2: hell for the offensive line. They had basically, uh, you know,
- 56:47Speaker 2: we're on their third tackle, might have had to have
- 56:50Speaker 2: gone to their fourth tackle, but Morgan moses credit to him,
- 56:53Speaker 2: decides to gut it out and play on a bad knee.
- 56:57Speaker 2: That's another one we'll have to monitor this week. But
- 57:00Speaker 2: they already have a backup left tackle, they already have
- 57:03Speaker 2: a rookie at left guard. Right tackles got injury issues,
- 57:07Speaker 2: and the depth is getting killed there. So I'll give
- 57:10Speaker 2: them all those sort of caveats. But the pressure rate
- 57:13Speaker 2: ended up coming out to forty four point two percent
- 57:16Speaker 2: in this game, and I actually thought this was one
- 57:18Speaker 2: of those games where Drake May did his best to
- 57:21Speaker 2: help not hurt the protection in the offensive line. This
- 57:25Speaker 2: type of pressure forty four point two percent is not sustainable.
- 57:30Speaker 2: You can't win in the playoffs with that kind of
- 57:32Speaker 2: pressure rate. You need to win the line of scrimmage.
- 57:35Speaker 2: More specifically, the left side of the offensive line allowed
- 57:38Speaker 2: twelve combined pressures between Vederian Low and Jared Wilson in
- 57:41Speaker 2: this game. And I thought the stunts and the games
- 57:46Speaker 2: that Baltimore was running up front, those gave him some
- 57:48Speaker 2: problems too. So there was just a lot going on
- 57:51Speaker 2: with the offensive line from both the injury perspective. But
- 57:55Speaker 2: if you get into the playoffs and you're giving up
- 57:57Speaker 2: forty five percent pressure rate against Houston or against Denver
- 58:02Speaker 2: or against Buffalo, like, you're not gonna win. You're not
- 58:04Speaker 2: gonna win playing like that, at least not multiple times.
- 58:07Speaker 2: Like maybe you can get away with it one time,
- 58:08Speaker 2: because Drake may is just that good, but he's not
- 58:11Speaker 2: gonna get all the way through the playoffs playing like that.
- 58:13Speaker 2: He took a beating in this game.
- 58:14Speaker 1: And you know, credit to him, like he played a
- 58:16Speaker 1: tough game, has a tough games. You're gonna see quarterback play.
- 58:18Speaker 1: But yeah, especially the tackle play. You had guys being
- 58:21Speaker 1: blown by on three man rushes like it just they
- 58:24Speaker 1: missed Will Campbell, They missed Morgan Moses in this game
- 58:26Speaker 1: big times. I think probably their worst pass protection game
- 58:29Speaker 1: of the year, certainly early in the season, and like
- 58:34Speaker 1: you said, you can't you put it well, you can't
- 58:35Speaker 1: get by with.
- 58:36Speaker 2: That, so just really quickly and then we'll move on
- 58:39Speaker 2: to the next one. The one thing that I did
- 58:40Speaker 2: notice early that it was there there was some little
- 58:44Speaker 2: weird things going on with the snap count with the cadence.
- 58:46Speaker 2: I wonder if they were in silent count because Bold
- 58:49Speaker 2: tackles on the interception don't move like and I know
- 58:53Speaker 2: watching it live, it looks like they both just get
- 58:55Speaker 2: blown by. But if you watch bold tackles when the
- 58:58Speaker 2: ball moves, you know, when brad Berry snaps the ball,
- 59:01Speaker 2: the guards in brad Berry move with the two back.
- 59:04Speaker 1: Guys, do both guys being slow that slow out of
- 59:06Speaker 1: their stance is.
- 59:07Speaker 2: Not No, something was going on with the snapcount or
- 59:11Speaker 2: the cadence or maybe they were in silent count or
- 59:14Speaker 2: maybe they weren't in silent count and that was throwing
- 59:16Speaker 2: them like. Something was weird that was going on there.
- 59:20Speaker 2: So I thought once they kind of got on the
- 59:23Speaker 2: same page and Vederian Lowe as one of those guys
- 59:26Speaker 2: that he needs to be getting off the ball, like
- 59:28Speaker 2: he kind of needs to be one of those dudes
- 59:30Speaker 2: that almost jumps the snapcount a little bit because he
- 59:33Speaker 2: doesn't have great lateral movement. He doesn't have a great
- 59:36Speaker 2: kick out of his stance, so that can really be
- 59:40Speaker 2: where he starts to play with the short corner is
- 59:42Speaker 2: when he's slow out of his stance. So I think
- 59:45Speaker 2: that that was a little bit of an issue early
- 59:47Speaker 2: on in this game. All right, going over to the defense,
- 59:50Speaker 2: run defense again on the bats just this week. Last
- 59:55Speaker 2: week it was inside runs by James Cook. This week
- 59:57Speaker 2: it was outside runs by Derrick Henry. I don't know
- 1:00:00Speaker 2: what was going on with The edge play in this game.
- 1:00:03Speaker 2: Wasn't good. Whatever it was, Uh, it just didn't look coordinated.
- 1:00:07Speaker 2: It didn't look the way that it should. They gave
- 1:00:10Speaker 2: up eight point two yards of carry to Derek Henry
- 1:00:14Speaker 2: outside the tackles, uh thirteen for one oh six rushing
- 1:00:17Speaker 2: off tackle in this game. So the edge play wasn't great.
- 1:00:22Speaker 2: The line packer play wasn't great. I mentioned the base
- 1:00:25Speaker 2: defense stuff wasn't great. Four and a half yards five
- 1:00:28Speaker 2: and a half excuse me, yards of carry and base defense,
- 1:00:31Speaker 2: like you said, Like we said at the top of
- 1:00:33Speaker 2: the show, this is just personnel at this point, Like
- 1:00:36Speaker 2: they just need spoiling and Milton Williams and Tonga healthy.
- 1:00:40Speaker 2: I just don't think they're gonna be a good run
- 1:00:41Speaker 2: defense unless those guys are healthy. It's I don't think
- 1:00:44Speaker 2: that there's anything schematically. I don't think it's anything that
- 1:00:47Speaker 2: they can really do.
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: They put six guys down on the line scrim.
- 1:00:50Speaker 2: Yet they do. They just don't have good run defense
- 1:00:53Speaker 2: at this point.
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: The only thing more they can do is, you know,
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: just engauge eight every play and dare the other team
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: to throw to open receivers. The crazy thing to me
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: Dereck Henry in nine carries before nine carries after Lamar
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: Jackson got hurt. Yeah, just in terms of the yards
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: per carry. I don't know if you have the math
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: number for this. Derek Henry was better with Lamar Jackson
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: out of the game. So you take away, like you
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: take away the threat of not that Tyler Hunty can't run,
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: but he's not Lamar Jackson. Right, even not having to
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: respect Lamar Jackson's legs, Derek Henry was still rolled.
- 1:01:27Speaker 2: That was all I mean.
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: Credit died Derrick Henry too. He was guy's the first
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: ballot Hall of Famer, But yes, all the more reason
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: I don't. I don't know. I don't play at the
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: end of that game.
- 1:01:34Speaker 2: But the edge stuff is has been a little bit
- 1:01:37Speaker 2: of a concern of mine. And I love when they
- 1:01:43Speaker 2: use spell techniques because I think it looks cool and
- 1:01:45Speaker 2: when it's coordinated and when it's timed up correctly, it
- 1:01:48Speaker 2: can be really effective. But I don't know if in
- 1:01:54Speaker 2: their current state, you know, maybe boxing the edges, which
- 1:01:57Speaker 2: means like the edges are setting the edge and they're
- 1:01:59Speaker 2: prying to the ball back inside versus crashing in and
- 1:02:02Speaker 2: trying to bounce the ball outside. Now maybe it's simple
- 1:02:05Speaker 2: as Blaine coming back and he's kind of good at
- 1:02:09Speaker 2: that sort of technique, the overlapping, you know, in the spill,
- 1:02:12Speaker 2: So maybe that's what they need. But this was this
- 1:02:16Speaker 2: was bad. The run defense just is not good right now.
- 1:02:19Speaker 2: And like the pressure rate, you are not going to
- 1:02:22Speaker 2: win in January. If you can't stop the run, you're
- 1:02:25Speaker 2: just not You're not going to win in January. Like that. Now,
- 1:02:28Speaker 2: they're really the only team that has like an elite
- 1:02:31Speaker 2: run game in the playoffs is Buffalo. So Denver's run
- 1:02:35Speaker 2: games bad.
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: Houston's isn't bad.
- 1:02:38Speaker 2: They're okay, but they're not Derrick Henry in Baltimore and
- 1:02:41Speaker 2: they're not Buffalo. Those are the kind of the two
- 1:02:43Speaker 2: best run games right now in the AFC because of
- 1:02:45Speaker 2: whatever the hell happened to the Colts without Daniel Jones.
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: So hey, Philip Rivers was slinging it early in that game. Yes,
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: he was, he was. He was slinging it a little bit.
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: I saw somebody, somebody we can talk. Let's get through
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: somebody posted on Twitter. The one outcome I didn't consider
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: was Philip Rivers plays well, but the Colts lose anyway.
- 1:03:05Speaker 2: So that was a big thing for me in this
- 1:03:08Speaker 2: game though, was you knew Baltimore was going to put
- 1:03:11Speaker 2: heavy gut personnel on the field, and the Patriots are
- 1:03:14Speaker 2: such a heavy nickel defense that I was curious to
- 1:03:17Speaker 2: see how the Patriots matched all of Baltimore's you know,
- 1:03:20Speaker 2: whether it's two back, whether it's too tight end. They
- 1:03:23Speaker 2: actually had some formations where they had recard and two
- 1:03:26Speaker 2: tight ends on the field, so they had like one
- 1:03:28Speaker 2: wide receiver on the field. It was kind of a
- 1:03:31Speaker 2: bad matchup in that respect for the Patriots, and the
- 1:03:34Speaker 2: Patriots played a lot of baits. They tried to play
- 1:03:36Speaker 2: more base defense in this game, and they have over
- 1:03:38Speaker 2: the last couple of weeks with Buffalo as well, and
- 1:03:42Speaker 2: they still can't stop the run out of base. So
- 1:03:43Speaker 2: this is this is a personnel thing. Is they got
- 1:03:47Speaker 2: to get their guys back. The other thing that I
- 1:03:49Speaker 2: had on the battle list, I'm taking flag for Alex,
- 1:03:53Speaker 2: but I'm just going to keep being honest about it
- 1:03:54Speaker 2: is Christian Zalez, who I just I think it's this
- 1:03:59Speaker 2: is partially scheme related. I think, yeah, and so I'm
- 1:04:05Speaker 2: not sorry. I think that that does kind of absolve
- 1:04:08Speaker 2: some of this. I heard Greg on your station yesterday
- 1:04:13Speaker 2: and I agree wholeheardly with his take on this. He
- 1:04:17Speaker 2: said that it reminds him a lot of early Steffan
- 1:04:19Speaker 2: Gilmore with the Patriots, where the Patriots are playing a
- 1:04:21Speaker 2: lot of zone. They're playing him off, they're playing him
- 1:04:24Speaker 2: in techniques that he's not his best at. And then
- 1:04:27Speaker 2: Belichick finally said, we're just going to play man to man.
- 1:04:30Speaker 2: We're gonna let Steffan Gilmore shadow the other team's best
- 1:04:32Speaker 2: receiver and we're going to just do it that way.
- 1:04:35Speaker 2: And then Gilmour flipped a switch. They went on two
- 1:04:37Speaker 2: Super Bowl runs. Semen's Defensive Player of the Year I
- 1:04:40Speaker 2: think there's a lot of parallels of what's going on
- 1:04:43Speaker 2: with Christian Gonzalez. The things about zone corners, playing off
- 1:04:48Speaker 2: and playing zone technique is just different. It's a different technique,
- 1:04:51Speaker 2: it's a different thing. It takes good eyes, it takes
- 1:04:54Speaker 2: good you know, instincts at the top of the route.
- 1:04:57Speaker 2: It's just a different ballgame. The other thing that playing
- 1:04:59Speaker 2: a lot of zone does is that it makes you tackle. Yep,
- 1:05:03Speaker 2: And I don't think that that's really a strength of
- 1:05:06Speaker 2: Christian Zion say.
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: He's actually been a better tackle of this year for
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: everything else. That tackling made on Derrek Henry in space
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: was awesome.
- 1:05:12Speaker 2: That was a good play, and the pass breakup you
- 1:05:15Speaker 2: know in the fourth quarter was another good play. But
- 1:05:17Speaker 2: there was some questionable things about his run defense in
- 1:05:21Speaker 2: this game. You know, when he sees a blocker coming,
- 1:05:25Speaker 2: if he's free to the ball, he'll make he'll he'll
- 1:05:27Speaker 2: stick his nose in there and tackle. But if he
- 1:05:30Speaker 2: sees like a polar coming towards him or something like that,
- 1:05:32Speaker 2: he was making some iffy decisions in this game. So
- 1:05:36Speaker 2: I just don't think that's who he is, and that's fine,
- 1:05:38Speaker 2: Like I don't expect him to be. I said this yesterday.
- 1:05:40Speaker 2: I don't expect him to be Dante high tower and
- 1:05:42Speaker 2: like hold up a guard, you know, like I don't
- 1:05:44Speaker 2: expect him to do that. But a couple of Derek
- 1:05:48Speaker 2: Henry's explosive touchdown runs in this game, were they just
- 1:05:52Speaker 2: running at Gonzo Like they're just trying to get on
- 1:05:54Speaker 2: the edge, and they're running left and they're running right
- 1:05:57Speaker 2: at Christian Gonzales And at some point some of that
- 1:06:01Speaker 2: I think is schematic. You know, you can't expect Christian
- 1:06:05Speaker 2: Zales to be a force defender. You can't expect him
- 1:06:07Speaker 2: to be somebody that's going to hold up blockers and
- 1:06:10Speaker 2: take on pulling guards and stuff like that. So it's both.
- 1:06:13Speaker 2: I think a little bit of this is on Christian Zales.
- 1:06:15Speaker 2: I think in Zoni gets a little bit loose with
- 1:06:17Speaker 2: his technique and could be a little bit tighter in
- 1:06:20Speaker 2: zone coverage. But I also think that it's not a
- 1:06:22Speaker 2: great fit for his skill set, And to me, that's
- 1:06:24Speaker 2: on the coaching.
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: Yeah, I agree with a lot. I agree with a
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: lot of that. I think you've covered it pretty well.
- 1:06:30Speaker 2: So let's go to the stuff that gets you beat.
- 1:06:32Speaker 2: Then we have to take a break the fake punt
- 1:06:36Speaker 2: just wasn't a good call. Great wasn't a good call.
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: Do you think they tried? They talked about on the
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: broadcast there was one moment earlier in a game where
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: they had to I forget if they took a delay
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: or call the time out, but like they let it
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: run down and for a punt, and it looks like
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: there was some light communication. I wonder if they were
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: maybe trying to put it on earlier, saw something earlier
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: that they wanted to put it on, and for whatever
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: reason didn't. But I did not love in that spot.
- 1:07:00Speaker 2: Yeah, So I don't think that they did, because I
- 1:07:03Speaker 2: think the two things that happened with the fake punt. One,
- 1:07:07Speaker 2: they lined up in a different punt protection formation. So
- 1:07:13Speaker 2: they the punts that they had before in the game
- 1:07:15Speaker 2: they were in like just the typical traditional blocking formation,
- 1:07:19Speaker 2: and in this one, the fake punt, they clearly were
- 1:07:22Speaker 2: in a different formation. And that that's always going to
- 1:07:25Speaker 2: be a tell, you know that what do we do?
- 1:07:27Speaker 2: You know, what's going on here? So the Ravens actually
- 1:07:30Speaker 2: got into punt safe at that point, and they had
- 1:07:32Speaker 2: two levels they had, you know, they basically were in
- 1:07:35Speaker 2: like a like a defensive front. You know, they were
- 1:07:37Speaker 2: in punt safe, so they had two guys at the
- 1:07:40Speaker 2: second level of the of the punt return team, and
- 1:07:45Speaker 2: Mike Rabel fell on the sword as he should. You know,
- 1:07:47Speaker 2: you don't call a fake punt without the blessing of
- 1:07:50Speaker 2: the head coach, Like that's not a coordinator level decision.
- 1:07:53Speaker 2: If you're gonna pull something out like that, it's going
- 1:07:56Speaker 2: to be on the head coach. But could they have
- 1:07:58Speaker 2: checked out of it once I saw that Baltimore was
- 1:08:01Speaker 2: ready for it. I think that's a fair question.
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: That's to me, the like you want to call it
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: and go to the line and see if you get
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: the look, go to the line and see if they
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: did not get the loan you don't get the look,
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: you got to be able to check.
- 1:08:10Speaker 2: Out right on d So that was my big thing.
- 1:08:14Speaker 2: Was not a great call, not a great time for it.
- 1:08:17Speaker 2: I didn't think it was needed. They just punted and
- 1:08:19Speaker 2: played field position like Tyler Huntley was gonna run out
- 1:08:22Speaker 2: of his team at some point, you know. And I
- 1:08:24Speaker 2: thought that their defense they should have trusted the defense
- 1:08:26Speaker 2: a little bit more. But my bigger gripe with it
- 1:08:30Speaker 2: was that they didn't check out of it, and I'm
- 1:08:32Speaker 2: not trying to put it on the players. I'm just saying,
- 1:08:34Speaker 2: like that's everybody, Like.
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: Well, they can be coaching thing too, you know, you
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: got to be able to coach them up on how
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: to do that right and what to look for. So
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: it was just was not a good play. It was
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: It was not a good play.
- 1:08:45Speaker 2: And then the other thing was the two turnovers by
- 1:08:47Speaker 2: Drake May, like we got those are things that get
- 1:08:49Speaker 2: you beat. When you turn the ball over and you
- 1:08:52Speaker 2: cost the team points by turning the ball over, that
- 1:08:55Speaker 2: is going to come back to bite it. So they
- 1:08:57Speaker 2: cost it at least six points, you know, maybe even
- 1:09:00Speaker 2: ten if you want to say that. You know, they
- 1:09:02Speaker 2: would have scored or something like that on a later down.
- 1:09:05Speaker 2: But the interception, there was pressure. He left the pocket.
- 1:09:10Speaker 2: I think he thought Kaishan Boody was going to post
- 1:09:12Speaker 2: up inside and Kaishan Boudy I think thought they were
- 1:09:14Speaker 2: going scramble drill, so they kind of got their signals
- 1:09:17Speaker 2: crossed there. That was a bang bang play that I understand.
- 1:09:21Speaker 2: There was just kind of a miscommunication on what was
- 1:09:23Speaker 2: going on on the route a little bit. I think
- 1:09:25Speaker 2: Booty also could have put a little bit more effort
- 1:09:27Speaker 2: into trying to prevent the interception, but it was kind
- 1:09:31Speaker 2: of a weird one. The fumble I thought was actually
- 1:09:35Speaker 2: really good, sort of situational football thing because the clock
- 1:09:40Speaker 2: is running. They snapped the ball with twenty three seconds left.
- 1:09:43Speaker 2: They had no timeouts, So you can't take a sack
- 1:09:45Speaker 2: on third down, right, because you can't spike it on
- 1:09:47Speaker 2: fourth down to stop the clock. They would have been
- 1:09:50Speaker 2: really hard pressed to get a field goal off if
- 1:09:52Speaker 2: you just took a sack and didn't fumble. So you
- 1:09:55Speaker 2: can't fumble. You can't fumble, obviously, but you can't take
- 1:09:57Speaker 2: a sack period. I think the result might have been
- 1:10:00Speaker 2: same if you had just gotten sacked instead of fumbled.
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: I would have still tried to try to run the
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: you could have tried. I don't know if you would
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: have gotten it off well, because you don't know, Like
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: you know, the defense scoops up the ball and they
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: run and.
- 1:10:12Speaker 2: The fumble is bad, right, But I don't know if
- 1:10:14Speaker 2: they get the field goal off even if it's a sack,
- 1:10:17Speaker 2: So you can't take a sack in that spot. Now,
- 1:10:20Speaker 2: this is always the back and forth with Drake. May
- 1:10:24Speaker 2: they cover zero blitz him and there's an open gap
- 1:10:27Speaker 2: and he tries to sneak out of the pocket. Now
- 1:10:30Speaker 2: it didn't work, right, So the results analysis is it
- 1:10:34Speaker 2: didn't work. But the other side of it is if
- 1:10:37Speaker 2: he gets out of the pocket there and he picks
- 1:10:40Speaker 2: up the first down with his legs or I think
- 1:10:43Speaker 2: it was Booty and Douglas on that side of the field.
- 1:10:45Speaker 2: Booty or Douglas go playground mode and get opened down
- 1:10:48Speaker 2: the field and all of a sudden it's a touchdown
- 1:10:49Speaker 2: on a broken play. We all are going crazy about
- 1:10:52Speaker 2: how great of a play it was by Drake May.
- 1:10:55Speaker 2: So there's all sorts of different things to it, you know.
- 1:10:58Speaker 2: To me, I think he probably should have just rowing
- 1:11:00Speaker 2: it at Hunter Henry's feet and just stop the clock
- 1:11:02Speaker 2: and kick the field goal. But if we all are
- 1:11:05Speaker 2: going to fall in love with the play extensions and
- 1:11:08Speaker 2: the scramble drills and the off platform and all that
- 1:11:11Speaker 2: different type of stuff, this is the other side, Like,
- 1:11:14Speaker 2: this is the other side of him trying to do stuff.
- 1:11:17Speaker 1: I think in that spot you gotta be more careful
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: with the football. But I get it.
- 1:11:20Speaker 2: Yeah, So that was the stuff that gets you beat.
- 1:11:22Speaker 2: That was the Ravens game. We're gonna take a quick break.
- 1:11:25Speaker 2: Then we'll take your calls and emails. We'll talk a
- 1:11:27Speaker 2: little bit about the Jets, not probably not a ton,
- 1:11:29Speaker 2: but we'll talk a little bit about the Jets as well.

- 1:14:28Speaker 2: Jeremiah there, Lope, Yeah, let's see you all right.
- 1:14:33Speaker 7: So I got a big question for you, Alex. This
- 1:14:36Speaker 7: has to do with the playoffs. I was reading this
- 1:14:38Speaker 7: situation or this rule change online. It's that the number
- 1:14:43Speaker 7: one seed gets to pick who they played instead of
- 1:14:47Speaker 7: getting to buy, this would be started like more rivalries.
- 1:14:50Speaker 7: Imagine getting picked called out if you're like the third
- 1:14:53Speaker 7: seed or something and the number one seed wants you
- 1:14:55Speaker 7: to come to their town. I just want to get
- 1:14:56Speaker 7: your guys' thoughts on that and who you would pick
- 1:14:59Speaker 7: if you were the Patriot and you are the number
- 1:15:00Speaker 7: one seed.
- 1:15:01Speaker 2: Thanks for the call.
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: I've seen that floated as a So the number one
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: seed doesn't get a bye, but they so if they
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: went to eight teams, right, Baseball, I think Baseball like
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: loosely flirted with this. At one point the number one
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: seed gets to pick who they want to play in
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: the first round. Then the number two seed, unless they
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: get picked by the one, gets to pick who they
- 1:15:23Speaker 1: want to play. So the top four teams I'll get
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: to pick, but like if you're you don't you aren't
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: guaranteed to pick. If you're a top four team because
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: one of the teams above you could pick you and
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: then either from there it goes by seating or you
- 1:15:33Speaker 1: then pick again with the teams that are left. It
- 1:15:36Speaker 1: would be tremendously entertaining his point. Think about the trash
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: talk we will get into, right if like you're your
- 1:15:43Speaker 1: team gets oh you want to play us? You want
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: to Like it would be a lot of fun, I know,
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: because it renders the regular season pretty meaningless. It's just
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: getting in or not. You know, once you clinch your
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: playoff spot, what you do for there doesn't really matter.
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: If anything. You kind of don't want to look good, uh,
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: you know, to get favorable picks. So I'm out on it.
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: It's a fun thought in theory, but I'm out.
- 1:16:05Speaker 2: I no offense. But that's like a little like that's
- 1:16:08Speaker 2: not real, Like that's not that's not something that they
- 1:16:10Speaker 2: would really consider.
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: I think, like I don't know if baseball actually considered
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: kind of fantasy high level baseball writer considered it.
- 1:16:17Speaker 2: Or what I would just say is like in a
- 1:16:20Speaker 2: sport like football, where motivation and those types of things
- 1:16:25Speaker 2: mean so much, if you get hand picked by the
- 1:16:29Speaker 2: number one seed to play them, that is a ton
- 1:16:32Speaker 2: of extra motivation for a team. I think that's actually,
- 1:16:37Speaker 2: in a lot of ways, would be a disadvantage to
- 1:16:40Speaker 2: the number one seed because you're creating that sort of
- 1:16:44Speaker 2: narrative sneaky.
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: The best spot to be would be like the fourth
- 1:16:47Speaker 1: or fifth seed, because you if you're the last team left.
- 1:16:50Speaker 1: You don't really get to pick. You kind of get
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: a sign.
- 1:16:53Speaker 2: I pick Picksburg, by the way, just to play out
- 1:16:56Speaker 2: the exercise. I'd play the.
- 1:16:57Speaker 1: Steelers, probably the Steelers, maybe the Chargers.
- 1:17:00Speaker 2: This is a weird year. It's not they wanted.
- 1:17:03Speaker 1: To be a healthier to do it.
- 1:17:04Speaker 2: The wildcard teams are good. The wildcard teams are good teams,
- 1:17:08Speaker 2: you know. That's I think the number one argument of
- 1:17:11Speaker 2: why it's the number one seed in this year is
- 1:17:14Speaker 2: so important is that you don't have to play anybody
- 1:17:16Speaker 2: from the wildcard because I could easily see and I
- 1:17:20Speaker 2: would pick the Patriots over the Texans. But is it
- 1:17:22Speaker 2: crazy to say that, like all.
- 1:17:24Speaker 1: Three the teams can win tough game? Yeah, you know,
- 1:17:27Speaker 1: and that's tough, you know.
- 1:17:29Speaker 2: So I think that this is one of those years
- 1:17:32Speaker 2: where the wildcard teams are better, might be better than
- 1:17:35Speaker 2: some of the division winners.
- 1:17:37Speaker 1: Better. Worst postseason format picking your opponent or the college
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: football playoffs? The college football playoff, I know your problems
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: with that.
- 1:17:44Speaker 2: Oh god, it's it's terrible.
- 1:17:47Speaker 1: The group of five auto bids probably dead.
- 1:17:49Speaker 2: All right? Mark is in Connecticut. What's up, Mark, big guy?
- 1:17:53Speaker 6: Thanks for taking my fall as always, I appreciate it,
- 1:17:56Speaker 6: and I just want to start off by saying, Merry Christmas,
- 1:17:58Speaker 6: Happy Holidays, thank you for all this you too, So
- 1:18:03Speaker 6: just want to start off with that last game. I mean,
- 1:18:05Speaker 6: it reminded me of Tom Brady throwing to Juliet Edelman
- 1:18:09Speaker 6: just when they got to have it moment, Drake May and.
- 1:18:13Speaker 8: Stefan Diggs just they had it. They finally like had
- 1:18:16Speaker 8: that connection. And I'm just really excited hoping that that
- 1:18:19Speaker 8: will keep on rolling and keep on growing as well.
- 1:18:23Speaker 8: The other thing I had is why can't the NFL
- 1:18:27Speaker 8: step in when there is a clear and blatant obvious
- 1:18:30Speaker 8: miss call. You have two guys, two judges, one of
- 1:18:33Speaker 8: the back and one on the size, and the guy
- 1:18:36Speaker 8: is getting yanked down three times during the play and
- 1:18:39Speaker 8: there is a no call again, Why can't the NFL
- 1:18:42Speaker 8: get the call right? We have so much technology today,
- 1:18:45Speaker 8: just get the call right.
- 1:18:46Speaker 6: Thanks guys, Love you guys.
- 1:18:48Speaker 2: Thanks Mark. I'm with you, And you know, talking about
- 1:18:51Speaker 2: the officials is probably one of my least favorite things
- 1:18:53Speaker 2: to do. It's just not for me. But I am
- 1:18:57Speaker 2: totally with Mark, and I think it's a slippery slope
- 1:19:01Speaker 2: and I get that right, But at some point we
- 1:19:05Speaker 2: have to look at the clear and obvious ones, and
- 1:19:07Speaker 2: those ones need to be called correctly, whether that is
- 1:19:11Speaker 2: the sky judge simply buzzing down and say, hey, drop
- 1:19:14Speaker 2: your flag, like we need to throw this flag. Yeah,
- 1:19:17Speaker 2: I think it's the easiest way to do it. It
- 1:19:19Speaker 2: almost doesn't even need to be known by the public
- 1:19:22Speaker 2: that it was the sky judge, you know what I mean,
- 1:19:24Speaker 2: Like just put earbuds like little you know.
- 1:19:26Speaker 1: IFB's and everybody's ears and so it's not called, and
- 1:19:29Speaker 1: then suddenly three minutes later there's.
- 1:19:31Speaker 2: A flag three minutes it's got to be one of these.
- 1:19:35Speaker 1: You can't have the late You got to know where
- 1:19:36Speaker 1: it's coming from. You can't have the late flags. Wow,
- 1:19:39Speaker 1: is out of nowhere? Well, I mean we talked about
- 1:19:40Speaker 1: this last week because then it looks like the rest
- 1:19:42Speaker 1: are showing up the place. You need transparencies the name
- 1:19:45Speaker 1: of the game. You need to be as transparent as possible.
- 1:19:47Speaker 2: I don't think I need to hear every single time
- 1:19:49Speaker 2: at one of these sky judges makes a call. I
- 1:19:51Speaker 2: don't think I need Cleete Blakeman to get on the
- 1:19:53Speaker 2: freaking megaphone and tell everybody that it was the sky judge.
- 1:19:57Speaker 2: I don't care.
- 1:19:57Speaker 1: No, you have to have transparency with this. I look
- 1:20:00Speaker 1: they have. I don't understand why because you just have
- 1:20:04Speaker 1: you seen you haven't seen it the ACC when they
- 1:20:07Speaker 1: go to video review, But.
- 1:20:08Speaker 2: I'm not asking them to go to video review. This
- 1:20:10Speaker 2: one with keseean body could be seen in real time.
- 1:20:12Speaker 1: But I don't need to point it like so they
- 1:20:14Speaker 1: show the actual conversation between the official on the field,
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: and then I.
- 1:20:18Speaker 2: Don't need that.
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: No, the transparency is so important. Try it just is.
- 1:20:23Speaker 2: It's if we're talking about like in bounds, out of bounds,
- 1:20:28Speaker 2: a turnover, like a fumble. Is it a fumble?
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: Is it not a fumble?
- 1:20:30Speaker 2: Sure? I don't need that for every single I think
- 1:20:33Speaker 2: you need.
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: As much transparency with the officials as possible. What I
- 1:20:35Speaker 1: was gonna say is they actually had Remember they put
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: in the ability to challenge those calls at one.
- 1:20:40Speaker 2: Point they did and it was a disaster.
- 1:20:41Speaker 1: It was a disaster because they didn't overturn anything, which
- 1:20:46Speaker 1: I actually thought was good and they should have let
- 1:20:49Speaker 1: it play out longer because the coaches would have learned, hey,
- 1:20:54Speaker 1: we're not going to use this to overturn the tiki
- 1:20:56Speaker 1: tax stuff. This is for you know, the Saints' range,
- 1:21:00Speaker 1: that that situation, Who was the stupid umpire that costs
- 1:21:04Speaker 1: the guy the perfect game when the runner is clearly
- 1:21:07Speaker 1: outrunning first, like the very clear and obvious.
- 1:21:10Speaker 2: I think all that stuff can be expedited.
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: So it can be expedited too. It should be transparently,
- 1:21:15Speaker 1: but it can be expedited. But I would bring back
- 1:21:18Speaker 1: the penalty challenge you give won a game. I'd make
- 1:21:21Speaker 1: it a separate thing, but it has to be known
- 1:21:23Speaker 1: and the officials need to make a point. We're not
- 1:21:26Speaker 1: doing the circumcising the mosquito. To use the Jerry Jones phrasing,
- 1:21:31Speaker 1: We're not doing that with this like we do with
- 1:21:33Speaker 1: some other plays, like the backwards pass against the Rams. Right,
- 1:21:36Speaker 1: it has to be so clear and obvious. It's going
- 1:21:39Speaker 1: to be such a higher standard than what it is
- 1:21:41Speaker 1: for the other challenges.
- 1:21:42Speaker 2: So I'm with everybody. I think the number one thing
- 1:21:46Speaker 2: though for me, is it's the agregious ones and you
- 1:21:50Speaker 2: know it when you see it. I don't need every
- 1:21:52Speaker 2: little hole legislated. I don't need every little tug of
- 1:21:55Speaker 2: the jersey legislated. But when Kijan Budi gets tackled trying
- 1:22:00Speaker 2: to with the ball in the air. That needs there
- 1:22:03Speaker 2: needs to be a flag thrown on that play. And
- 1:22:05Speaker 2: I would say the same thing if it was a
- 1:22:07Speaker 2: Baltimore Raven, if it was Rashad Bateman getting tackled by
- 1:22:10Speaker 2: Carlton Davis, I would have said the same exact thing.
- 1:22:13Speaker 2: You know, the rams, you know, Saints one is what
- 1:22:15Speaker 2: the one everybody always brings up. It's not that hard.
- 1:22:18Speaker 2: We all know what it looks like when we see it.
- 1:22:21Speaker 2: I don't need all the TICKI tag. It shouldn't be
- 1:22:23Speaker 2: slowing it down frame by frame. Just simply get the
- 1:22:26Speaker 2: egregious ones correct. And all you gotta do is have
- 1:22:30Speaker 2: this guy judge radio down say that you missed the
- 1:22:33Speaker 2: pass interference, blatant pass in appearance, throw the flag and
- 1:22:36Speaker 2: if you want your transparency, then you know Hockey Lee
- 1:22:40Speaker 2: whichever sean hockey right, it's not his dad anymore. Well,
- 1:22:43Speaker 2: jets on the on the megaphone and says, you know,
- 1:22:47Speaker 2: replay assists, you know had a defensive pass interference. We're
- 1:22:50Speaker 2: throwing the flag.
- 1:22:51Speaker 1: Yeah, no, just like they do with the expedited reviews,
- 1:22:54Speaker 1: I think is the way to do it.
- 1:22:55Speaker 2: And we move on no challenges, no video, no long
- 1:22:58Speaker 2: video reviews. Just get it over with all right, Sam
- 1:23:02Speaker 2: is in Virginia. What's up? Sam?
- 1:23:05Speaker 9: Hey, guys, thanks for taking my call. Two quick questions here.
- 1:23:09Speaker 9: I know you talked about personnel on their own defense.
- 1:23:13Speaker 9: What do you think about maybe and form genics getting
- 1:23:15Speaker 9: some more snaps here. He's been a good edge defender
- 1:23:20Speaker 9: in the past and then a limit here it feels
- 1:23:22Speaker 9: like he's also been buying it rushing passer.
- 1:23:26Speaker 10: The other thing.
- 1:23:27Speaker 9: Just want to recalibrate, where are you guys out on
- 1:23:30Speaker 9: the AFC.
- 1:23:31Speaker 2: What team?
- 1:23:32Speaker 6: Uh?
- 1:23:32Speaker 9: Kind of hears you're you're most scared of JAG winning
- 1:23:38Speaker 9: in Denver this week was a little eye opening to me.
- 1:23:41Speaker 9: I think really rounding in the form of their past games.
- 1:23:44Speaker 9: So just kind of cureus what your thoughts in the
- 1:23:46Speaker 9: greater AFC. So thanks, He'll pick it off one.
- 1:23:48Speaker 2: Thanks for the call of Sam. You know what, honestly,
- 1:23:52Speaker 2: I have to admit I don't want to play Buffalo
- 1:23:54Speaker 2: at third time.
- 1:23:55Speaker 1: Yeah, that's still number one for me.
- 1:23:57Speaker 2: Both those games are super close. Both of them came
- 1:23:59Speaker 2: down to the wire. It's always wonky when you play
- 1:24:02Speaker 2: a division opponent a third time in a playoff game.
- 1:24:05Speaker 2: I just don't really have much interest. I don't think
- 1:24:07Speaker 2: it's a great matchup for the Patriots defense because of
- 1:24:09Speaker 2: the run game that Buffalo has against you. Obviously, maybe
- 1:24:13Speaker 2: the Patriots get healthy and get their guys back on
- 1:24:16Speaker 2: defense and that's better, But overall, Buffalo is still number
- 1:24:19Speaker 2: one to me. You know, I understand everybody's conversations about Houston.
- 1:24:25Speaker 2: Their defense is great. At the same time, I just
- 1:24:29Speaker 2: their offense has not really been great all year. I
- 1:24:34Speaker 2: like Stroud, he's a good player. I think schematically with
- 1:24:38Speaker 2: Nick Kaylee, they've had some problems with play calling and
- 1:24:41Speaker 2: with Dex's and No's all year long. They're kind of
- 1:24:44Speaker 2: like a middling offense. And I just have a lot
- 1:24:46Speaker 2: of confidence that Drake May and Josh McDaniels will put
- 1:24:50Speaker 2: up enough points against Houston. It might not be pretty.
- 1:24:52Speaker 2: It might it might be kind of like the you know,
- 1:24:55Speaker 2: close to you know, twenty three to twenty kind of game.
- 1:24:58Speaker 2: That's not exactly a mon elease of offense, because they're
- 1:25:01Speaker 2: going to lose some rounds to Houston, no doubt. But
- 1:25:04Speaker 2: can you just outscore the Texas. You don't have to outscore,
- 1:25:07Speaker 2: you know, a great offense right here.
- 1:25:09Speaker 1: So let's do this. And we did this exercise two
- 1:25:12Speaker 1: weeks ago. We say we're gonna do it every week.
- 1:25:13Speaker 1: We missed it last week, but it might be a
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: ton refresh. Remember you ranked at the quarterbacks among the
- 1:25:19Speaker 1: teams that were over five hundred. Do you want to
- 1:25:20Speaker 1: redo the list?
- 1:25:21Speaker 2: Can we just do the AFC playoff teams? I don't
- 1:25:23Speaker 2: want to, you know, Baltimore and in indianapos.
- 1:25:26Speaker 1: So we only did the teams that were over five
- 1:25:28Speaker 1: hundred last time. So it was we're just.
- 1:25:29Speaker 2: We're just doing the seven teams that are going to
- 1:25:31Speaker 2: the play Well, you're.
- 1:25:32Speaker 1: Gonna have Indie last anyway, and then it will be
- 1:25:33Speaker 1: the same list.
- 1:25:34Speaker 2: Like Indy, like Indian and Baltimore are we.
- 1:25:37Speaker 1: Didn't do Baltimore last time? Okay they were under five hundred.
- 1:25:39Speaker 2: Well they're the only two teams that are still alive.
- 1:25:41Speaker 1: Okay, so I'm just gonna put the Colts last, because
- 1:25:45Speaker 1: I know, why.
- 1:25:45Speaker 2: Are we doing We don't need to do the Colts.
- 1:25:48Speaker 2: Don't last.
- 1:25:48Speaker 1: They're not their last, is what you're saying?
- 1:25:50Speaker 2: They're not going?
- 1:25:51Speaker 1: Or is there somebody you're nervous to rank behind the Colts?
- 1:25:53Speaker 1: Is that the issue.
- 1:25:53Speaker 2: No, all right, So can I just rank them in
- 1:25:56Speaker 2: order first to the last, because it's easier that way.
- 1:26:00Speaker 1: Josh Allen, even with the foot Josh.
- 1:26:02Speaker 2: Allen number one, I don't I'm not a doctor. I
- 1:26:04Speaker 2: don't do right. I don't do that.
- 1:26:05Speaker 1: Just reminder this was we included the Patriots in this.
- 1:26:08Speaker 2: Josh Allen, all right, Drake May number two, Herbert okay, three.
- 1:26:18Speaker 1: Should I tell you the listener, No, I'm not gonna
- 1:26:20Speaker 1: tell you. Listen last time. I want to see if
- 1:26:21Speaker 1: anything changing now.
- 1:26:22Speaker 2: It gets now, it's when it gets starts to get harder.
- 1:26:25Speaker 2: I would say Stroud for I think Stroud is is good.
- 1:26:29Speaker 2: I like Stroud. I would then go Rogers has been
- 1:26:34Speaker 2: better of late. He's been better the last couple of weeks.
- 1:26:37Speaker 2: All right, Trevor is just so streaky, and you know
- 1:26:41Speaker 2: how I.
- 1:26:41Speaker 1: Feel about you got to put them in some order.
- 1:26:46Speaker 2: I'm gonna say Rogers for now, because I think he's
- 1:26:49Speaker 2: been better. I think he's played well the last couple
- 1:26:50Speaker 2: of weeks. I'll give it a bon Nix and I'll
- 1:26:54Speaker 2: put Trevor.
- 1:26:55Speaker 1: Wow.
- 1:26:56Speaker 2: Yeah, so that was me being nice to bow Nicks.
- 1:27:00Speaker 2: You did not play well last week, but he played
- 1:27:02Speaker 2: really well against Green Bay.
- 1:27:03Speaker 1: You are nothing if not consistent. The only thing you
- 1:27:05Speaker 1: changed from two weeks ago Rogers and Knicks were flipped.
- 1:27:09Speaker 1: There you go, So you had Knicks fifth, Rogers sixth.
- 1:27:12Speaker 1: Now it's Rogers fifth and Nick sixth, and then Trevor
- 1:27:15Speaker 1: Lawrence and so all right, you're you're still pretty much
- 1:27:18Speaker 1: where you were on the quarterbacks. I, especially with the
- 1:27:21Speaker 1: foot injury, I'd put Drake May one. I'd have Trevor
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: Lawrence higher, I'd put him ahead of Knicks. You're right,
- 1:27:28Speaker 1: Rogers has been the only.
- 1:27:29Speaker 2: Reason why I have Josh Allen one is because he
- 1:27:31Speaker 2: has playoff.
- 1:27:32Speaker 1: That's fair. That's fair, and you are more in line
- 1:27:35Speaker 1: with that than you were last time because you have
- 1:27:37Speaker 1: Rogers over Knicks.
- 1:27:38Speaker 2: That's the only reason why I have Josh Allen ahead
- 1:27:40Speaker 2: of Drake. If Drake may goes out there and plays
- 1:27:42Speaker 2: great in the postseason, I my mind might change. But
- 1:27:45Speaker 2: Josh Allen has not been the reason why the Bills.
- 1:27:48Speaker 1: So you're more or less where you were two weeks
- 1:27:49Speaker 1: ago in terms of the quarterbacks.
- 1:27:51Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that you know this. The Patriots really
- 1:27:54Speaker 2: the only game where I'd feel strongly that the Patriots
- 1:27:57Speaker 2: don't have the best quarterback is against Buffalo. Now, Herbert's awesome.
- 1:28:01Speaker 2: Herbert's great, so he's right there with those guys. I
- 1:28:04Speaker 2: think Herbert is probably going to finish in the top
- 1:28:06Speaker 2: five MVP voting as well. He's had a great year
- 1:28:10Speaker 2: and he's a great player. But those three guys are
- 1:28:12Speaker 2: the best quarterbacks in the field right now for sure.
- 1:28:14Speaker 2: And then it kind of drops off after there, and
- 1:28:16Speaker 2: it's sort of like a tier, you know, like that
- 1:28:18Speaker 2: that top tier of Alan May, Herbert, and then there's
- 1:28:23Speaker 2: a gap and then there's the rest of these guys.
- 1:28:25Speaker 2: I think, you know, bo Knicks is just last week
- 1:28:29Speaker 2: he was not so good against Jacksonville. The week before
- 1:28:31Speaker 2: that he was great against Green Bay. I just can't
- 1:28:33Speaker 2: get a great feel for him. Trevor Lawrence kind of
- 1:28:36Speaker 2: same thing. Streaky, streaky quarterback.
- 1:28:39Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:28:39Speaker 2: Aaron Rodgers. I'm still not sure how if Aaron Rodgers
- 1:28:43Speaker 2: is good or bad.
- 1:28:43Speaker 1: We're starting getting like, is Aaron Rodgers just pissed off
- 1:28:46Speaker 1: and on the revenge tour? But also we know what
- 1:28:48Speaker 1: he's been in the playoffs. Yeah, but no, I think
- 1:28:50Speaker 1: that's mostly a fair list. Again, I'd quibble with a couple,
- 1:28:53Speaker 1: but I think you're more or less in the ballpark.
- 1:28:54Speaker 2: You would have Drake May ahead of Josh.
- 1:28:56Speaker 1: Allen if his foot's messed up.
- 1:28:58Speaker 2: Okay, oh, I just said I'm not I'm not taking
- 1:29:01Speaker 2: the facts.
- 1:29:02Speaker 1: He's like missing practices before. It is a huge game.
- 1:29:05Speaker 2: It's a big game. They need to keep winning.
- 1:29:07Speaker 1: So right, Like, I'm not a doctor either, but is
- 1:29:11Speaker 1: I would consider Allan missing practice a week if they
- 1:29:13Speaker 1: were playing the Jets, I might not read into it
- 1:29:15Speaker 1: as much. I would consider Alan missing practice in a
- 1:29:17Speaker 1: week like this a red flag. It's not good now.
- 1:29:20Speaker 1: It's not open heart surgery. No, it's not a former
- 1:29:23Speaker 1: head coach. There's probably only one guy that can split
- 1:29:26Speaker 1: his hand open and go out and win the AFC
- 1:29:27Speaker 1: Championship the next week. He don't make him like that
- 1:29:29Speaker 1: guy anymore. They didn't before, and they don't know. Josh
- 1:29:32Speaker 1: Allen's pretty tough, though, Josh Allen, Josh Allen's pretty tough.
- 1:29:35Speaker 2: And I would say that. You know, with Alan the
- 1:29:38Speaker 2: second half against Cleveland, I watched almost all that game.
- 1:29:41Speaker 2: He was not the same guy.
- 1:29:42Speaker 1: And the second looked uncomfortable.
- 1:29:43Speaker 2: So if he wasn't moving around, he wasn't bouncing around.
- 1:29:46Speaker 2: He wasn't using his legs. So if that's how he
- 1:29:48Speaker 2: looks on Sunday against Philly, maybe he's better by the
- 1:29:52Speaker 2: time the playoffs come around, because he's got a couple
- 1:29:54Speaker 2: of weeks. But if I was Buffalo, you know, I'd
- 1:29:56Speaker 2: be a little bit worried.
- 1:29:57Speaker 1: We might need to read the list again next week
- 1:30:00Speaker 1: when we see how he looks.
- 1:30:01Speaker 2: Can we talk about the Bills for a second, because
- 1:30:03Speaker 2: I know you love talking about the Bills.
- 1:30:04Speaker 1: I always love talking about the Bills.
- 1:30:05Speaker 2: I'm definitely coming more towards your side of the street
- 1:30:08Speaker 2: with the Bills a little bit. And I think the
- 1:30:10Speaker 2: main thing that I'm coming towards your side of the
- 1:30:13Speaker 2: street on is I think it's being severely downplayed. How
- 1:30:16Speaker 2: much if a failure would be to lose the division
- 1:30:19Speaker 2: to the Patriots.
- 1:30:20Speaker 1: Can't say bad things about the Buffalo Bills there everybody's
- 1:30:22Speaker 1: feel good.
- 1:30:23Speaker 2: I think it's getting masked by the fact that they
- 1:30:25Speaker 2: still are eleven and four and are going to the
- 1:30:27Speaker 2: playoffs and they're still very good team. So I think
- 1:30:29Speaker 2: a lot of people are saying are kind of glossing
- 1:30:32Speaker 2: over it, and I get the vision titles or it
- 1:30:35Speaker 2: are not Super Bowls, and you don't hang banners for
- 1:30:37Speaker 2: them here in New England. And I get that, but
- 1:30:40Speaker 2: coming into the season, the Bills were a heavy, heavy
- 1:30:44Speaker 2: favorite to win the AFC East, Like, there was no
- 1:30:47Speaker 2: way the Bills really should have lost the division this
- 1:30:50Speaker 2: year to the Patriots. Now, the Patriots have been much
- 1:30:52Speaker 2: better than expectation, but a step back in the division
- 1:30:58Speaker 2: by losing the division to the Patriot it's and then
- 1:31:01Speaker 2: in a playoff exit, Like, I just don't know how
- 1:31:03Speaker 2: you keep going forward with this with Sean McDermott and
- 1:31:06Speaker 2: Billy and I was gonna say, Billy Bean and Brandon Bean, like,
- 1:31:09Speaker 2: I don't know how you keep doing running it back
- 1:31:12Speaker 2: and running it back and running it back, because if
- 1:31:15Speaker 2: they let's just say, let's play it out, and I'm
- 1:31:18Speaker 2: sure you'll be happy to play it out this way,
- 1:31:20Speaker 2: they're gonna lose the division to the Patriots if there
- 1:31:22Speaker 2: are been one and done in the playoffs, Like let's
- 1:31:24Speaker 2: say they lose to like Jacksonville in the first round
- 1:31:27Speaker 2: of the playoffs. I don't know how that's not like
- 1:31:30Speaker 2: an abject failure, like and it just it's odd to
- 1:31:34Speaker 2: me that we're kind of glossing over the fact that
- 1:31:37Speaker 2: Buffalo has regressed like that is a big regression. For
- 1:31:40Speaker 2: Buffalo to go from Division champs five years in a
- 1:31:43Speaker 2: row to one and done as a wildcard team is
- 1:31:46Speaker 2: a huge regression from Buffalo.
- 1:31:47Speaker 1: And I'd like to think the way we're the reason
- 1:31:50Speaker 1: it's not being dissect is because everybody saw it coming.
- 1:31:52Speaker 1: I don't think that's it. They got older, they lost
- 1:31:55Speaker 1: talent off the roster. It's the NFL is not designed.
- 1:32:00Speaker 1: I'm not even gonna make this a Bills thing. I mean,
- 1:32:01Speaker 1: I'll make it, and I know the Chiefs have some
- 1:32:03Speaker 1: injuries and stuff, but like remember a couple of years ago,
- 1:32:06Speaker 1: the conversation was, well, the Bills have Josh Allen their wagon.
- 1:32:09Speaker 1: The Dolphins just signed this wonder kid offensive genius named
- 1:32:12Speaker 1: Mike McDaniel, and look out, the Jets got future Hall
- 1:32:14Speaker 1: of Fame Ran Rodgers. Like there were people saying for
- 1:32:16Speaker 1: the next five years, the Patriots can't win the division.
- 1:32:18Speaker 1: Don't even bother, right, And I just it's not to
- 1:32:21Speaker 1: take a victory lap or like you know, defend the wall,
- 1:32:24Speaker 1: wave the Patriots flag. It's that's not how the NFL works.
- 1:32:28Speaker 1: There is an undercurrent, an active undercurrent in the NFL
- 1:32:31Speaker 1: designed to make the good teams bad and the bad
- 1:32:34Speaker 1: team's good with the great everybody back to the men
- 1:32:37Speaker 1: right with the great organizations know how to do is
- 1:32:40Speaker 1: hold off that undercurrent as long as possible. You really
- 1:32:42Speaker 1: have like a three to four year window if you're
- 1:32:45Speaker 1: lucky to be a good team. The great organizations can
- 1:32:48Speaker 1: stretch that to like six or seven. Twenty years is ridiculous. Yeah,
- 1:32:52Speaker 1: twenty years is by no means the standard. It never
- 1:32:55Speaker 1: will be. It will never be done again.
- 1:32:58Speaker 2: So the Chiefs did it for ten The Chiefs.
- 1:32:59Speaker 1: Did it and it was like a soft head well
- 1:33:01Speaker 1: because Alex Smith years where they were fine. Sure, so
- 1:33:04Speaker 1: they did it from what eighteighteen eighteen they were the
- 1:33:09Speaker 1: name championship came eighteen to twenty. That's a pretty good run.
- 1:33:11Speaker 1: That's what six years, seven years, So that's a good run.
- 1:33:15Speaker 1: Should feel good. That's a good run. Eight years the
- 1:33:18Speaker 1: eight year you're making me do math Like the Bills
- 1:33:23Speaker 1: are caught in that undertow right now. Yeah, the Bills
- 1:33:25Speaker 1: are caught in that undertowe and they can't get out
- 1:33:27Speaker 1: of it. And yes they still have Josh Allen. He
- 1:33:28Speaker 1: will keep them at a certain level. I don't think
- 1:33:30Speaker 1: they're gonna be picking first overall anytime soon. But the
- 1:33:34Speaker 1: fact that everybody thought the Buffalo Bills, for whatever reason,
- 1:33:37Speaker 1: were going to be immune to this cycle that comes
- 1:33:40Speaker 1: for everybody not named Tom Brady and Bill Belichick. I
- 1:33:44Speaker 1: don't know, but it's catching up to him. And look,
- 1:33:48Speaker 1: maybe they still can win this year. The Patriots won
- 1:33:51Speaker 1: as the cycle is catching up to them. In twenty eighteen,
- 1:33:53Speaker 1: the cycles catching up to them again, they still wan
- 1:33:55Speaker 1: second again, Right, well, they kind of dodged it as
- 1:33:58Speaker 1: well as you can dodge it the first time. But
- 1:33:59Speaker 1: like that's the other thing, Like the AFC is weak
- 1:34:02Speaker 1: because it's going to be they have to do it,
- 1:34:04Speaker 1: they don't do it. To see, they're not going to
- 1:34:06Speaker 1: do it.
- 1:34:06Speaker 2: I keep on bringing up the same comparison to and
- 1:34:09Speaker 2: I know people don't necessarily like crossing sports, but it's
- 1:34:11Speaker 2: the twenty twenty four Celtics, like.
- 1:34:13Speaker 1: I've said that get furious when I said that.
- 1:34:16Speaker 2: Path has completely cleared, you know, the deck has completely cleared.
- 1:34:19Speaker 2: And if you don't do it that year, then when
- 1:34:22Speaker 2: is it going to happen with this setup? Right, I'm
- 1:34:24Speaker 2: not saying it will never happen for Josh Allen, because
- 1:34:26Speaker 2: you know how I feel about Josh Allen. But with McDermott,
- 1:34:29Speaker 2: are they hitting their ceiling as a team. I think
- 1:34:31Speaker 2: you could make a really good case that they are.
- 1:34:33Speaker 1: That this is sort of hit it. I think they're
- 1:34:35Speaker 1: below their ceiling. Your ceiling was probably like three whatever
- 1:34:39Speaker 1: that digs years. Yeah, and then you know you get
- 1:34:42Speaker 1: the question of and by the way, the Saint. You
- 1:34:44Speaker 1: can say the Saint just so I'm not picking on
- 1:34:46Speaker 1: the Bills. He can say same thing about the Bengals,
- 1:34:47Speaker 1: about Joe Burrow. At what point does that Matthew Stafford
- 1:34:51Speaker 1: path start to look really attractive to those guys.
- 1:34:53Speaker 2: You can say the same thing about Baltimore right now
- 1:34:56Speaker 2: with Lamara Jackson. I mean they're they're going backwards. That
- 1:35:00Speaker 2: team is not gonna make the playoffs. Now Lamar got hurt, right, Still,
- 1:35:03Speaker 2: they're not gonna make the plays.
- 1:35:04Speaker 1: I think the unique thing for all three of those
- 1:35:06Speaker 1: guys is they haven't They've only had one head coach. Yeah,
- 1:35:09Speaker 1: so maybe you know, they give another coach a try.
- 1:35:14Speaker 1: I don't think any of them are asking out this year.
- 1:35:17Speaker 1: That thing's gonna be looming. That thing is going to
- 1:35:19Speaker 1: be looming, and you know the Jets are gonna have
- 1:35:22Speaker 1: picks for the next couple of years.
- 1:35:24Speaker 2: It's crazy how great of jobs those would be, right,
- 1:35:26Speaker 2: if you have openings in Baltimore, Buffalo, what was it there? Cincinnati?
- 1:35:34Speaker 2: Eventually Andy Reid's gonna hang it out.
- 1:35:36Speaker 1: So I threw this out there the other day on
- 1:35:38Speaker 1: the Morning Show on ninety eight five, Like, do any
- 1:35:42Speaker 1: of those teams almost get scared off for firing their coach?
- 1:35:45Speaker 1: Especially the Ravens, Right, John Harbaugh is a great coach
- 1:35:48Speaker 1: and his time has come, and it just they probably
- 1:35:51Speaker 1: just need to part ways. I think Andy Reid and Philly, right,
- 1:35:54Speaker 1: But you can't just fire Harbor to fire Harbor and
- 1:35:59Speaker 1: replacing with who ever if the Ravens job opens, what's
- 1:36:02Speaker 1: the better job? The Ravens are the Chiefs.
- 1:36:06Speaker 2: Ravens really, yeah, I think their rosters better.
- 1:36:10Speaker 1: Wow, all right, well then that derails my day. I
- 1:36:12Speaker 1: was gonna say, like, you can't fire John Harbaugh and
- 1:36:15Speaker 1: then suddenly be like the fourth team left, like the
- 1:36:17Speaker 1: fourth most popular team in the coaching game.
- 1:36:19Speaker 2: I mean, so I would say that it's probably more
- 1:36:22Speaker 2: like mahomes mahomes of those chief If you look at
- 1:36:25Speaker 2: the rest of the roster. Yeah, I think it's Baltimore
- 1:36:29Speaker 2: because there there are other pieces that are younger, like
- 1:36:31Speaker 2: Travis Kelsey and Chris Jones are probably at the end too,
- 1:36:34Speaker 2: Like this is probably Travis Kelcey's last.
- 1:36:36Speaker 1: If all four were to open up, Chiefs, Ravens, Bills, Bengals. Yeah,
- 1:36:40Speaker 1: most attractive to least attractive job.
- 1:36:43Speaker 2: Bill's number one.
- 1:36:45Speaker 1: Okay, we can't put the Ravens ahead of the Chiefs
- 1:36:47Speaker 1: and then say the Bills are ahead because of the roster.
- 1:36:49Speaker 1: The Bills roster thinks Bill's number one, Okay, all right,
- 1:36:53Speaker 1: Josh Allen fan.
- 1:36:54Speaker 2: Boy, But it's it's just it's just obvious, like he's
- 1:36:57Speaker 2: he's the youngest of those guys, is he. Yeah, he's
- 1:36:59Speaker 2: the best of those guys. Like he's definitely younger than Mahomes.
- 1:37:03Speaker 2: Uh so, I I just Bills and Allen's like twenty eight,
- 1:37:08Speaker 2: twenty nine.
- 1:37:09Speaker 1: He is maybe Joe Burrow's younger, about like seven months.
- 1:37:13Speaker 2: Yeah, Joe Burrow. I forgot about Burrow. I was thinking
- 1:37:16Speaker 2: more of Lamar.
- 1:37:16Speaker 1: I think he is young. So all right, Bills are
- 1:37:21Speaker 1: number one, Ravens real number one, Chiefs yep, Bengals because
- 1:37:29Speaker 1: the Bengals team is Joe Burrow and Jamar chasing T.
- 1:37:31Speaker 2: Higgins and that's nothing. Their defense is So.
- 1:37:36Speaker 1: You say you rank it basically by how good the
- 1:37:38Speaker 1: roster is, except the team with the worst roster.
- 1:37:41Speaker 2: I don't, for I don't think they have the worst roster.
- 1:37:43Speaker 1: Oh I think their rosters worse than Bills, or worse
- 1:37:46Speaker 1: than Bengals.
- 1:37:47Speaker 2: Worse than the Bengals.
- 1:37:49Speaker 1: Yeah, at least the Bengals are chasing Higgins.
- 1:37:51Speaker 2: What how is it worse than the Bengals. The Bengals
- 1:37:55Speaker 2: have nobody on defense. Their defense is terrible.
- 1:37:57Speaker 1: The Bill's defense is old.
- 1:37:59Speaker 2: So I guess they have Rousseau, they have Benford, they
- 1:38:02Speaker 2: have Oliver like they have good players on defense. They
- 1:38:05Speaker 2: Terroll Bernard is a good linebacker. All I guess I
- 1:38:07Speaker 2: don't know their defense. They don't have the star power
- 1:38:09Speaker 2: the Bengals do. Not I mean, they don't have the
- 1:38:13Speaker 2: skill talent that the Bengals do. But other than that,
- 1:38:16Speaker 2: I think they have a better roster everywhere else. Their
- 1:38:18Speaker 2: offensive line is better than the Bengals. Their run game
- 1:38:21Speaker 2: is better. James Cook is better than anybody.
- 1:38:25Speaker 1: All right, I might have got caught up in the moment,
- 1:38:27Speaker 1: they don't have a better roster than the Ravens, though I.
- 1:38:29Speaker 2: Think it's close with the Ravens. I think it's close.
- 1:38:32Speaker 2: I would just take Josh Allen over the Mark, but
- 1:38:34Speaker 2: it's it's a that one's close. The Kansas City roster,
- 1:38:37Speaker 2: the issue is everybody's old, Like like they're guys, you know, Kelsey,
- 1:38:42Speaker 2: Chris Jones, like those guys have to be. I'm sure.
- 1:38:44Speaker 1: I think the Bills are, like Dawkins is older, you know,
- 1:38:48Speaker 1: some of those guys on defense, Milano is still playing,
- 1:38:51Speaker 1: Poyer is still playing a key role for him.
- 1:38:53Speaker 2: Poyer doesn't play a ton Milano. Milano is is older,
- 1:38:56Speaker 2: and that's a bit of a problem.
- 1:38:58Speaker 1: But I think they're through Bosa edge.
- 1:39:02Speaker 2: They've tried their best to kind of move on from
- 1:39:05Speaker 2: a lot of those guys. Though. Yeah, that's fair, that's fair. No,
- 1:39:09Speaker 2: I'm not saying they don't have holes. I just I
- 1:39:11Speaker 2: would say their roster is good enough that when you
- 1:39:14Speaker 2: have the best quarterback in the league on top of it,
- 1:39:17Speaker 2: I'm saying Buffalo, but it's close with Baltimore, Kansas City.
- 1:39:21Speaker 2: Outside of like Trent McDuffie, I just don't have a lot.
- 1:39:25Speaker 2: I just don't know what else you're building around.
- 1:39:26Speaker 1: Duffy you have. I think he's a good player.
- 1:39:32Speaker 2: Player, his heads on Checko hasn't been the same guy.
- 1:39:36Speaker 2: That super Bowl run was good.
- 1:39:37Speaker 1: It's fair. I don't know what. The Chiefs have a
- 1:39:41Speaker 1: ways to go.
- 1:39:42Speaker 2: The Chiefs their roster's not very good. That's why I
- 1:39:44Speaker 2: keep like, that's why everyone's like so stunned that they're
- 1:39:47Speaker 2: out of the playoffs and homes and all that stuff.
- 1:39:50Speaker 2: It's like, look at the team, like the roster is
- 1:39:52Speaker 2: not good, right, you know that roster is really not good.
- 1:39:55Speaker 2: All right, let's do ten minutes on the Jets. That's
- 1:39:57Speaker 2: probably ten more minutes than we need to spend on
- 1:39:59Speaker 2: the Jets.
- 1:40:00Speaker 7: Uh.
- 1:40:00Speaker 2: This, to me, there's called there's three different ways to
- 1:40:04Speaker 2: categorize this game against the Jets. Number one is to say,
- 1:40:09Speaker 2: any given Sunday, right, is the NFL weird crap happens?
- 1:40:13Speaker 2: Cleveland just played Buffalo tough in Cleveland last week. You
- 1:40:17Speaker 2: know that that thing, right, like this could happen. I heard,
- 1:40:21Speaker 2: and I love him the debt, but I heard Mike
- 1:40:22Speaker 2: Reese talking like up the Jets the other day and
- 1:40:25Speaker 2: saying that this is a sneaky hard game. I love you, Mike,
- 1:40:27Speaker 2: I do, but it's not I'm sorry. Okay, the Jets,
- 1:40:30Speaker 2: this Jets team, I can't do the any given Sunday angle.
- 1:40:33Speaker 2: I just can't. But that at a angle's there if
- 1:40:35Speaker 2: you want it.
- 1:40:36Speaker 1: You know what the twenty nineteen Dolphins beg to differ.
- 1:40:39Speaker 2: The twenty nineteen Dolphins, though, had a better team than
- 1:40:42Speaker 2: this they did, and better coach and they had fits magic. Yeah,
- 1:40:45Speaker 2: you know, like it's not Brady Cook, who is probably
- 1:40:49Speaker 2: the tape commander right now for the Jets more than anything.
- 1:40:51Speaker 1: Yeah, I might have been wrong about my Brady Cook take.
- 1:40:53Speaker 2: Yeah, he stinks.
- 1:40:55Speaker 1: I said, like seventh round project. Guy. It's not like
- 1:40:57Speaker 1: I was ready to know.
- 1:40:58Speaker 2: I mean that's okay. I'm not like killing you for it.
- 1:41:00Speaker 2: Just he's not good. So there's that angle. I'll allow
- 1:41:07Speaker 2: that to be part of the discussion. The second angle
- 1:41:10Speaker 2: to me is the seeding, the division, the stakes that
- 1:41:15Speaker 2: come with the game in terms of all of that,
- 1:41:18Speaker 2: which is important. You know, the Patriots can win the
- 1:41:20Speaker 2: AFC East on Sunday if they beat the Jets and
- 1:41:23Speaker 2: the Eagles beat the Bills, they're gonna be AFC's chances.
- 1:41:27Speaker 1: But go birds go, Birds, there you go.
- 1:41:29Speaker 2: I think that would be big. I think that taking
- 1:41:33Speaker 2: Week eighteen out of this and kind of just letting
- 1:41:35Speaker 2: you coast is probably the best.
- 1:41:36Speaker 1: Case scenario because then, so I don't know if you've
- 1:41:40Speaker 1: seen this, I've tried to figure this out. I can't
- 1:41:42Speaker 1: find a scenario where it doesn't happen. But if the
- 1:41:45Speaker 1: Patriots win the division, yes, I don't think they can
- 1:41:48Speaker 1: get the three seed. Like if they lose enough games
- 1:41:51Speaker 1: to fall to the three seed, I think that just
- 1:41:53Speaker 1: means that they are the wild card.
- 1:41:56Speaker 2: Yeah, that sounds so, because they're one game ahead to Jacksonville.
- 1:42:00Speaker 1: Right, I don't think they have the head to head
- 1:42:02Speaker 1: or the tiebreaker, whatever the tie breaker is. So if
- 1:42:05Speaker 1: you win this week and clinch the division, you can
- 1:42:10Speaker 1: assent even if you don't get the bye. You can
- 1:42:12Speaker 1: essentially create your own pseudo bye week. We can, so
- 1:42:15Speaker 1: now that's usually locked into the tune of I'm not positive.
- 1:42:18Speaker 2: I think the tricky part is, of course, that the
- 1:42:21Speaker 2: Chargers and the Broncos playing Week eighteen, that game could
- 1:42:25Speaker 2: get flexed into the primetime Sunday night slot because it
- 1:42:28Speaker 2: could be for the AFC West if they both if
- 1:42:32Speaker 2: the Chargers win on Saturday against Houston, then they are
- 1:42:36Speaker 2: are going to if they beat the Broncos in week eighteen.
- 1:42:38Speaker 1: They the head to head. So who has the number
- 1:42:41Speaker 1: one seed tiebreaker between the Patriots and Chargers.
- 1:42:44Speaker 2: The Patriots if the Patriots went out. Interesting, So that
- 1:42:47Speaker 2: that's that's the difference there, right, Okay, But I think
- 1:42:51Speaker 2: this is I still feel this way. I said this yesterday.
- 1:42:54Speaker 2: I think you can beat the Dolphins as long as
- 1:42:57Speaker 2: Drake May plays. And it's one of those games that
- 1:43:00Speaker 2: at it's conservative and I know you're getting Steven Jackson
- 1:43:05Speaker 2: twenty fifteen.
- 1:43:05Speaker 1: Yeah, but wouldn't it be nice if he didn't have
- 1:43:08Speaker 1: to Well, I.
- 1:43:08Speaker 2: Think he's going to have to if you want to
- 1:43:10Speaker 2: not out. But the inactives that that day can be
- 1:43:15Speaker 2: Robert Spallane Kiris Tonga, you know, if you don't want
- 1:43:19Speaker 2: to play Milton Williams. You know, like all of these
- 1:43:22Speaker 2: guys that are banged up that you need to get
- 1:43:25Speaker 2: healthy for the playoffs. None of those guys need to play.
- 1:43:28Speaker 2: But let's be also clear about something. Somebody has to play.
- 1:43:33Speaker 2: So you can't bench all twenty two starters on both
- 1:43:38Speaker 2: sides of the ball. Doesn't work like that in football,
- 1:43:40Speaker 2: you can't do that.
- 1:43:41Speaker 1: Not even so when you're losing team you can because
- 1:43:43Speaker 1: you just put half your team on hot ir inside
- 1:43:45Speaker 1: your practice squad.
- 1:43:45Speaker 2: You can't do that now, right, So you can't do that.
- 1:43:48Speaker 2: So some of their starters are going to have to
- 1:43:51Speaker 2: play against Miami. Now, maybe it's Austin Hooper getting more
- 1:43:56Speaker 2: run instead of Hunter Henry, and it's Kyle Williams getting
- 1:43:59Speaker 2: more run, and Vawn Diggs and Charles a Lot like
- 1:44:03Speaker 2: you do that sort of thing. But some people are
- 1:44:05Speaker 2: gonna have to play. So there's that angle, the seating,
- 1:44:08Speaker 2: all that stuff. The other the last angle that I
- 1:44:11Speaker 2: think is the most important to me is it's a
- 1:44:15Speaker 2: classic tune up game. It is a classic. We are
- 1:44:18Speaker 2: gonna play bmidgie state as Alabama in the second game
- 1:44:22Speaker 2: of the season, and we are going to win by seventy.
- 1:44:27Speaker 1: Mercer mercer, sure, uh.
- 1:44:30Speaker 2: And we're gonna you know, al Corn State and we're
- 1:44:32Speaker 2: gonna win by one hundred. But we're gonna feel good
- 1:44:35Speaker 2: about ourselves doing it. Maybe the Jets press some buttons
- 1:44:39Speaker 2: or pull some levers that have given the Patriots some issues,
- 1:44:43Speaker 2: you know running the ball. Obviously with breist Hall, you know,
- 1:44:46Speaker 2: some of the coverage stuff that they did in Week
- 1:44:48Speaker 2: eleven in the second half could come back. And so
- 1:44:51Speaker 2: you get practice, live in game practice against these things,
- 1:44:55Speaker 2: and it's not the same path, it's not the same team.
- 1:44:58Speaker 2: But the twenty eighteen team, it was definitely the Bills.
- 1:45:01Speaker 2: I think it was the Bills and the Jets. I
- 1:45:04Speaker 2: don't remember if it was the Bills and the Dolphins
- 1:45:05Speaker 2: or the Bills and the Jets, but they played two
- 1:45:07Speaker 2: division games at the end of the year. In twenty eighteen,
- 1:45:10Speaker 2: they got right, they got their stuff figured out, They
- 1:45:13Speaker 2: figured out their run game to leaniles in the playoffs
- 1:45:16Speaker 2: at home, and it completely flipped the season from the
- 1:45:19Speaker 2: Miami miracle and the Pittsburgh lost to a super Bowl team.
- 1:45:22Speaker 2: And so you can use tune up games to your advantage.
- 1:45:27Speaker 2: And I think that that's another thing that you'd like
- 1:45:29Speaker 2: to see. Can they get the run defense settled down
- 1:45:32Speaker 2: against a good run game back to back weeks, because
- 1:45:36Speaker 2: Devon Ahan, if he plays for Miami and Week eight eighteen,
- 1:45:38Speaker 2: is one of the best running backs in the league
- 1:45:40Speaker 2: this year, Yeah, and Bresol is a good player. Can
- 1:45:44Speaker 2: you get the run defense figured out if the Jets
- 1:45:46Speaker 2: play man to man coverage, if they play drop eight,
- 1:45:49Speaker 2: if they play a lot of too high shell like
- 1:45:51Speaker 2: all that was different things that teams have started to
- 1:45:53Speaker 2: do against the Patriots more and more. Here's this is
- 1:45:56Speaker 2: an opportunity to kind of get some live in game
- 1:45:59Speaker 2: practice against that type of stuff. I don't think that
- 1:46:02Speaker 2: there's any scenario that I could come up with where
- 1:46:04Speaker 2: the score or the result of the game is in doubt,
- 1:46:07Speaker 2: but it would be nice to see them shore up
- 1:46:11Speaker 2: some of these things going into the postseason. So I
- 1:46:15Speaker 2: would have felt differently about Miami if Miami didn't fall
- 1:46:18Speaker 2: apart and Tuo was still playing and they were like
- 1:46:22Speaker 2: that would have reminded me of twenty nineteen, like a
- 1:46:24Speaker 2: frisky Dolphins team. This Jets team is not that. This
- 1:46:28Speaker 2: Jets team is in a free fall.
- 1:46:30Speaker 1: Yeah, Tcob game, take care of business.
- 1:46:33Speaker 2: Yeah. Brady Cook terrible against the Blitz. So if they
- 1:46:37Speaker 2: have to start pulling out some things, heating him up
- 1:46:40Speaker 2: is probably the path that they're going to take. He
- 1:46:42Speaker 2: is the least efficient quarterback out of forty five qualified quarterbacks.
- 1:46:48Speaker 2: He is forty fifth out of forty five, and epage
- 1:46:51Speaker 2: per drop back against the Blitz he is double worse.
- 1:46:56Speaker 1: Than the next closest guy. Wow, So cam Ward is
- 1:46:59Speaker 1: like minus can't Ward really? Yeah?
- 1:47:02Speaker 2: Cam Ward is like minus by these numbers, I wish
- 1:47:05Speaker 2: they were easier to digest minus zero point five against
- 1:47:09Speaker 2: the Blitz. Brady Cook is minus one point one six
- 1:47:14Speaker 2: against the Blitz. Okay, anything over one in either direction
- 1:47:19Speaker 2: is insane. Like that is like categorically insane on a
- 1:47:22Speaker 2: play to play basis. So if they have to do something,
- 1:47:25Speaker 2: if this game is closer than they want it to
- 1:47:27Speaker 2: be and they have to start making some plays, heating
- 1:47:30Speaker 2: up Brady Cook is the way to go. You know,
- 1:47:31Speaker 2: a guy can't handle a Blitz. So that's the Jets.
- 1:47:36Speaker 2: You have anything else to add on the Jets?
- 1:47:37Speaker 1: That much it?
- 1:47:38Speaker 2: Yeah, so well we can end it there. We want
- 1:47:41Speaker 2: it a little bit early. Look at us, Look at us.
- 1:47:44Speaker 2: This never happens. I wish I had more to tell
- 1:47:47Speaker 2: you about the Jets. I'll give you one little thing
- 1:47:49Speaker 2: about the Jets actually, because you know, I don't like
- 1:47:51Speaker 2: ending early. I don't like short changing the people. Sneaky
- 1:47:56Speaker 2: Christian Zalees eighty Mitchell matchup. Ad Mitchell gave him some.
- 1:48:00Speaker 1: Issues, problems, He just got dropping the ball.
- 1:48:03Speaker 2: Yeah, Week eleven wasn't the best for Christian Gonzalez. I
- 1:48:07Speaker 2: didn't think last week was particularly great for Christian Gonzalez either,
- 1:48:11Speaker 2: so you can shut people like me up. Even though
- 1:48:13Speaker 2: Brady Cook's going to be throwing in the ball, I'm
- 1:48:15Speaker 2: still going to watch and see if he's winning routes
- 1:48:17Speaker 2: or not. Right, So I would like to see Christian
- 1:48:20Speaker 2: Gonzalez kind of be a little bit like mad that
- 1:48:24Speaker 2: Adie Mitchell got him a couple of times the last time,
- 1:48:27Speaker 2: and this time really take Adie Mitchell out of the game.
- 1:48:30Speaker 2: We'll obviously be watching Milton Williams if he comes back.
- 1:48:33Speaker 2: That will be one to just watch how he looks
- 1:48:35Speaker 2: and how he's moving and things like that. And you know,
- 1:48:39Speaker 2: this could be the last game for Vederian Low at
- 1:48:42Speaker 2: left tackle because Will Campbell will be eligible to come
- 1:48:45Speaker 2: back against the Dolphins. But Will McDonald is probably one
- 1:48:48Speaker 2: of the Jets' best players and probably one of the
- 1:48:51Speaker 2: only like bright spots on that defense which has been horrid,
- 1:48:55Speaker 2: and he'll be rushing off the left side on Vederian Low.
- 1:48:58Speaker 2: So those are some matchups look out for. But I
- 1:49:00Speaker 2: am watching Gonzales closely against Mitchell.
- 1:49:03Speaker 1: Yeah, we'll see how he bounces back in that matchup
- 1:49:06Speaker 1: because he Yeah, Mitchell got him a couple times last night.
- 1:49:08Speaker 1: All right, there we go.
- 1:49:09Speaker 2: It got us to eleven fifty. All right, Alex and
- 1:49:12Speaker 2: I will be back next week. We will do a
- 1:49:14Speaker 2: show on New Year's Eve as well, and we will
- 1:49:17Speaker 2: recap this Jets game, talk about the Dolphins, look at
- 1:49:21Speaker 2: the AFC playoff picture, which we'll really be down to
- 1:49:23Speaker 2: the wire. Maybe well that those games won't happen yet,
- 1:49:27Speaker 2: right because your college football playoffs has got a stupid schedule,
- 1:49:30Speaker 2: so we won't talk college football.
- 1:49:32Speaker 1: First game will be well, the first game will be
- 1:49:33Speaker 1: that night, so we get in.
- 1:49:34Speaker 2: Okay, maybe a little bit of that as well. All right,
- 1:49:37Speaker 2: so we'll see you guys then. Patriots unfilter will be
- 1:49:39Speaker 2: up in ten minutes. Hey, this is Alex.
