Transcript
- 0:00Hey everybody. As a friendly reminder, this is
- 0:02a part of our phase two series recording.
- 0:05Phase 2 is focused on development and integration and
- 0:08increasing internal capacity. It's not about behavior control.
- 0:12So this episode is going to address some of the core
- 0:15misunderstandings and recovery that and it's specifically the
- 0:19belief that addiction is a willpower problem rather than
- 0:22like a self perpetuating system that we need to understand
- 0:25better and disrupt. So this episode is foundational
- 0:29for us understanding why stopping behavior alone is often
- 0:32going to fail even when we have sincere motivation.
- 0:36I do want to recognize before we jump to the episode here that
- 0:40this is the one topic here in phase two of our men's programs
- 0:44that is also in and talked about extensively inside of our phase
- 0:49one program because we won't understand the addictive system.
- 0:53So I want to highlight some of the confusion of knowing the
- 0:56consequence of this carrying deeply and still feeling pulled
- 1:01back into the same cycle. I think it's exhausting, often
- 1:05feeling like you're fighting yourself rather than
- 1:07understanding what you're up against.
- 1:09So let's jump into that today. Let's talk about the experience
- 1:13of repeating behaviors and genuinely don't want them to
- 1:15repeat them and not knowing why I can't stop.
- 1:21Welcome to Beyond the Facade podcast.
- 1:23I'm your host, Luke Gordon, and I'm thrilled to have you join me
- 1:26in the space today. What we're going to be doing is
- 1:28diving deep into the trials and triumphs and truths of seeking
- 1:32authenticity. Becoming your true self isn't
- 1:34about a single action or a moment.
- 1:36It's a relentless pursuit, a commitment to self that reveals
- 1:40a rich connection and meaning that our life.
- 1:42Has to offer. So whether this is your first
- 1:44time tuning in or you're a regular listener, know this What
- 1:47you're building here goes beyond a.
- 1:49Conversation. You're here to challenge, to
- 1:51change, and to celebrate the incredible journey of becoming
- 1:55your authentic self. Because when you dare to.
- 1:57Show up fully. The rewards are immeasurable.
- 1:59So welcome to Beyond the Facade. Let's get started.
- 2:04I think I want to start off this podcast episode by talking about
- 2:07one of my favorite quotes out there.
- 2:09If you haven't got a chance to read the book Atomic Habits by
- 2:13James Clear, he has this quote in here that says you do not
- 2:17rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your
- 2:19systems. Oh my gosh, I just love that you
- 2:23do not rise to the level of your goals.
- 2:25You fall to the level of your systems.
- 2:27So often Ben are going like, man, I guess I just, I don't
- 2:30know what's wrong with me. I just have a willpower problem.
- 2:34It's not a willpower problem. The problem is the system that
- 2:36you have to tackle life. What we're going to do is we're
- 2:39going to get into the addictive system Today.
- 2:42I want to give credit to where credit is due, The addictive
- 2:44system credit Patrick Carnes and so much of his work for
- 2:48understanding this. Many men recovery attempts focus
- 2:52exclusively on stopping the acting out behaviour, but
- 2:55stopping the behaviour is really necessary.
- 2:59It doesn't address the internal structure that produces the
- 3:02behaviour. All right.
- 3:03So it exists for a reason. The behaviour exists and men
- 3:06often experience like a lot of short term success, but it's
- 3:10followed by relapse, a bunch of discouragement, and a bunch of
- 3:14shame and this leads to the conclusion that they lack a lot
- 3:18of discipline. I guess I just not trying hard
- 3:20enough. I need to try harder next time.
- 3:22There's a lot of sincerity in that, and there's a lot of words
- 3:26of commitment. But in reality there's a system
- 3:29that exists that remains intact even when the behavior is
- 3:33temporarily. I'll use the word suppressed
- 3:35here, the because the system hasn't changed and we're going
- 3:39to talk about addiction as a closed loop system.
- 3:41So addiction operates as a closed loop system that
- 3:45regenerates itself unless it's interrupted and we don't know
- 3:49what it is for it to regenerate itself.
- 3:52So once it's activated, the system moves forward with a lot
- 3:55of momentum. And without the awareness in
- 3:57those early interventions, the cycle repeats itself
- 4:00automatically over and over and over again.
- 4:03And not only does it repeat itself, those pathways get
- 4:05carved deeper and deeper and deeper.
- 4:07So the goal of recovery is not just to like be abstinent from
- 4:10behavior, but it's about disrupting the system that
- 4:13exists. There is an engine of the
- 4:16system. The engine of the system is core
- 4:20beliefs. So at the center of this
- 4:22addictive system, those core beliefs, they're usually
- 4:25unconscious and they're identity based.
- 4:28It's what I believe about myself.
- 4:30And these beliefs are often expressed as like I am
- 4:33statements. And listen to some of these I am
- 4:34statements. I am worthless, I am unlovable,
- 4:39I am broken, I'm intrinsically broken.
- 4:42I am alone, I'm hopeless. OK, so these beliefs are often
- 4:46like they originate and like those earlier life experiences
- 4:50we've talked about over those last couple episodes.
- 4:53And those are the attachments we were talking about an addiction
- 4:56temporarily soothe the pain that's generated by those
- 5:01beliefs, but they reinforce things really long term.
- 5:05OK, But there is temporary pain. There is temporary relief from
- 5:08that pain, but the consequences accumulates and those beliefs
- 5:12deepen. And that's what I talked about,
- 5:14the pathway getting carved deeper and deeper, and it
- 5:16strengthens that system. And those beliefs become what
- 5:20feels like reality. It feels.
- 5:22So that's just what it is, but it's not shared.
- 5:25The engine of the system score beliefs.
- 5:27But what's next? The impaired thinking is next.
- 5:32That's the permission. It's not the logic.
- 5:34So impaired thinking exists to give permission for the relief
- 5:39seeking behavior. You know, it's OK.
- 5:41What allows me the end of the day to be able to do this, to be
- 5:44able to keep going back to those things that I think are so
- 5:46problematic. It's the impaired thinking.
- 5:49So it's not primarily like irrational or illogical, but it
- 5:53is very strategic early impaired thinking.
- 5:57It minimizes risk and the impact in advanced impaired thinking
- 6:02after being in there for a long time creates like that false
- 6:05plan. The exceptions, the comparisons
- 6:09in there, some of them are just ugly to think about.
- 6:12I'm not going to get my own needs met unless I do it for
- 6:14myself. I can only rely on myself.
- 6:16Like nobody's actually there for me.
- 6:18Early impaired thinking, it's not, It doesn't feel that
- 6:22irrational. It doesn't feel that illogical.
- 6:25But in advanced impaired thinking, it creates like lots
- 6:28of exceptions, a lot of comparisons.
- 6:30And that functions that impaired thinking is like reduces that
- 6:34internal conflict inside of self that moves the system forward.
- 6:38A lot of partners ask question like how, why?
- 6:42How could he do this? Why would he even allow himself
- 6:46to even go there? That's advanced impaired
- 6:49thinking. That's not early on impaired
- 6:50thinking and it allows us to move forward.
- 6:53So challenging our impaired thinking requires a lot of
- 6:56exposure and a lot of accountability.
- 6:59Not that internal argument. I'd like to just kind of note
- 7:03here for a second that if we have these core beliefs and we
- 7:06have the impaired thinking, sometimes there's recovery
- 7:10programs that don't really talk about that stuff.
- 7:12They jump right to what I'm now about to jump to, which is the
- 7:15addictive cycle. So let's talk about that for a
- 7:18second, but then I'm going to come back to these pieces of the
- 7:21core beliefs and the impaired thinking.
- 7:23So the addictive cycle, what's inside of it?
- 7:26Preoccupation, that's that mental and emotional obsession
- 7:29with relief. I cannot deal with this pain
- 7:31right now. And it's characterized and like,
- 7:34have you guys ever heard of the word like euphoric recall?
- 7:38You go back to past thoughts, past dramatizations, you become
- 7:42preoccupied with things and the brain begins activating the
- 7:46reward, the memory and the motivation parts, the motivation
- 7:50systems. So we become preoccupied and how
- 7:53to get ourselves out of that pain.
- 7:55So then what comes up next is a ritualization.
- 7:59That's where our brains and our bodies, and this is human really
- 8:02like predictable. So predictable behaviors that
- 8:05move a person closer to acting out.
- 8:09That includes like the planning, that includes the secrecy.
- 8:11That includes the scanning, the positioning, and the rehearsal,
- 8:16All those things that actually there's also a bunch of benefit
- 8:21from them coming from the rituals itself, the planning,
- 8:24the secrecy, the scanning, because it we're not in reality
- 8:29anymore, Neurochemical activation increases before the
- 8:34behavior occurs. So we're already getting hits of
- 8:36doping. We're already getting hits.
- 8:37We're already leaving reality. We're already the benefit of not
- 8:40to deal with the pain even when we're in the ritual.
- 8:43Then we have the acting out. That's the behavior itself.
- 8:47That's the thing that we're thinking is the problem when we
- 8:49have so many things that came before the ritual, the
- 8:51preoccupation, the impaired thinking, the core beliefs.
- 8:55OK, so the behavior itself shows up and that produces like
- 8:59intense the temporary and temporary reward and it
- 9:04reinforces the brains association between relief and
- 9:07the behavior itself. OK, then what happens after we
- 9:11act out? And then there's shame and
- 9:13despair. There's that emotional crash
- 9:14following the behavior. There's some shame, guilt,
- 9:18isolation, despair, and that reinforces that core belief that
- 9:22we went through a while ago and fuels that renewed
- 9:26preoccupation. OK, so shame, let's think about
- 9:31it as fuel and not motivation. So shame doesn't interrupt the
- 9:34addictive system, that strengthens it.
- 9:37OK, we think it would. We think if we shame ourselves
- 9:40enough, we have enough shame that it would.
- 9:42But shame increases secrecy and increases isolation, and that's
- 9:45self attack that just that self hatred.
- 9:49So we have attempts to use shame as motivation, but it just
- 9:52deepens the cycle. So in phase two, shame is like
- 9:55going to start to be reframed as a signal rather than a weapon.
- 9:59So a shame, instead of running from it, it's acknowledging,
- 10:02going and what is happening right now.
- 10:04What is the message that my body's trying to tell me and we
- 10:07want to talk about? I like to call it upstream
- 10:10intervention. The role of secrets.
- 10:13So often it's like stopping secrets, not doing secrets
- 10:16anymore, lying like a preoccupation with the thing of
- 10:21your partner is so hurt by it, which is the lies of the most
- 10:23hurtful part. Let's talk about that.
- 10:26So the most dangerous part of the addictive system is the
- 10:28secrecy. Secrets most often live in
- 10:32these. Let's think about these parts of
- 10:34the process. Where does it live in the
- 10:35secrets? Secrets lived in the impaired
- 10:37thinking. It lives in the obsession.
- 10:40It lives in the ritualization. OK, so by the time someone asks
- 10:45for help at the acting out stage, momentum is often already
- 10:49too strong. That's why you have a
- 10:52screensaver of your family on your computer.
- 10:54Why doesn't it work if you have a picture of your family and
- 10:57your wallets? Why doesn't it work?
- 10:59And because because by then it's too strong if we're in an acting
- 11:05out stage and sustainable recovery requires interrupting
- 11:09that system earlier and it's identifying what that system is.
- 11:12So disclosure and asking for help upstream weakens that
- 11:17system before it accelerates, before it gets moving too fast.
- 11:20And often it's not even real life how fast it's moving.
- 11:24OK, so let's stop for a second and talk about our partners and
- 11:28what they experience. And I'm talking to the partners
- 11:30right now too, The betrayed partner they have to experience.
- 11:33The addictive system is like a lot of unpredictability.
- 11:36There's a lot of emotional absence.
- 11:38Like where is my partner? The obviously there's betrayal
- 11:41in it, but they're like, I feel like I'm that person, not really
- 11:46there. So even when behavior stops, the
- 11:49system may still be active internally.
- 11:53I think that's what scares partners often.
- 11:55And that's where it can never feel like when you're the, when
- 11:58you're the betrayed partner, thinking about the betraying
- 12:01partner, acting like there's enough ever going to be enough.
- 12:03Why can't you just be happy that I'm not acting out?
- 12:06It's because there's other things that are in play that are
- 12:08still a part of the system that keeps it alive, that it's kind
- 12:11of like buried alive, but it's not dead.
- 12:14So even when the behavior stops, the system can still be active
- 12:18internally. So without that system level
- 12:21work, repair can feel like shallow or incomplete.
- 12:25So understanding the system is going to allow from some
- 12:27accountability, but not some moral collapse.
- 12:31And true repair is going to require disrupting that system,
- 12:36not just apologizing for the outcomes.
- 12:38Apology matters. So when I think when I'm
- 12:40talking, I'm thinking about them to the betrayed partner, their
- 12:45expectation, your expectation of behavior change, not being just
- 12:49stopping the porn, but it's so much bigger than that or
- 12:52stopping the cheating that it's a system is absolutely correct.
- 12:56So it's not going to that's where it scares me so much when
- 12:59a partners just like, you know, have this miraculous experience.
- 13:02So they just stop acting out and they don't act out anymore.
- 13:05It's like, well, there had to be a system there that put all this
- 13:08into motion that keeps all this stuff alive.
- 13:10And it's not just something that there's miracles and just stops
- 13:13happening. It's the why did that stop
- 13:15happening? All right, so understand the
- 13:18addictive system does not automatically dismantle it.
- 13:21All right? So just because we have this
- 13:23podcast episode and you're have some awareness now, some things
- 13:27you didn't have before didn't dismantle anything.
- 13:29Systems change through the repeated awareness, like
- 13:32repeated interruption and relational accountability.
- 13:36So willpower alone cannot override a system designed for
- 13:40survival at all. So frustration of the stage
- 13:43often signals like readiness for deeper, more integrated work.
- 13:48So if you find yourself listening to this episode, maybe
- 13:50there's some frustration as you as a partner or as you as the
- 13:53person that betrayed your partner that suffers from
- 13:56compulsive behavior. That frustration inside yourself
- 13:59can signal like readiness for that deeper work, for more
- 14:03integrated, more work or recognize the system that's in
- 14:07place. Just again, friendly invitation
- 14:10for you. Phase two, if you've not been a
- 14:13part of phase two, it's going to focus on dismantling that
- 14:15addictive system rather than fighting the urges alone.
- 14:18OK, so the work moves intervention like upstream.
- 14:23I keep using that word. It moves the work upstream,
- 14:26which is now it goes into addressing the beliefs.
- 14:29We're not just talking about the acting out behavior.
- 14:31We're talking about the belief. That's the engine of the system.
- 14:34We're going to expose that impaired thinking, like what are
- 14:37the thoughts that eventually start off more logical and then
- 14:41go to a place of no logic, not being logical at all.
- 14:45And then we're going to interrupt that secrecy.
- 14:48We're going to talk about the ugly.
- 14:50We're going to talk about the stuff we don't want to be
- 14:51talking about. And it's going to feel different
- 14:53when we do because instead of using those old patterns, we're
- 14:56going to talk about what's actually happening.
- 14:58We're going to ask for help earlier.
- 15:00And Phase 2 is going to emphasize that second order
- 15:02change, not that surface level control.
- 15:05It's not going to be just about the acting out behavior.
- 15:07It's about what fuels it. So again, I just want to honor
- 15:10Khan's framework here like this. That's so grateful for the work
- 15:15that he's done and the people around him.
- 15:18And I want to keep this addiction mechanical, not moral.
- 15:23And let's name the intervention that must occur.
- 15:26That's the secrets. It's the it's the understanding,
- 15:29the system that's in place. So again, this podcast series is
- 15:33created to recognize what phase two work consists of.
- 15:37The system doesn't die just because the behavior is not
- 15:40there for a period of time. OK, good to spend time with you.
- 15:43Next time we're going to go into embodied healing.
- 15:45I'm excited or have a lot of back for that one because this
- 15:49is gives me goosebumps even thinking about embodied healing
- 15:53with how much lands up here. It has to land here.
- 15:59It has to land here. After you embody this so our
- 16:03body starts responding differently.
- 16:05This is not understanding what why cognition alone isn't
- 16:09enough. OK, talk to you next time.
- 16:14If you're a man who's trying to show up differently for your
- 16:16partner after betrayal, then listen closely.
