- 0:07we're so happy inside. Some people on some skis, but we would rather
- 0:15sit on down and talk some movies. We're the avid Indoorsmen. Come listen
- 0:21to our show. We're the evid Indoorsmen at home around the goal, We're
- 0:26the avid Indoorsmen. We hope you love it, so come on in and
- 0:32stay. We'll do our best to make you smile with the indoors man.
- 0:40What is happening? I'm round Lundquist, good, I am bugs and we
- 0:45are the avid Indoorsmen? Are every one? Hello? Hello? What's going
- 0:51on? Buddy? That much? Man? I'm just kind of hanging out.
- 0:54Uh got warm today? That was something oh so humid. Yeah,
- 1:00it has now dropped considerably. I think it's supposed to storm now tonight.
- 1:04Oh yeah. I am headed up to the Northland to do something camping and
- 1:10canoeing, so that'll be for getting the bad weather out of the way,
- 1:14that's right. I would rather have it here than there, that's for sure.
- 1:17So for sure, looks like it's gonna be nice and cool and chili
- 1:19up there. I'm excited. That'll be fun. Man. Yeah, but
- 1:25yeahn't that. Everything's great? How about you. I'm good. I'm getting
- 1:29ready to go back to work. It's been a it's been a nice,
- 1:32slow, love it month, and so yeah, I got to actually go
- 1:37and do some stuff. We got CMA fest, We're gonna shoot some videos.
- 1:41We're gonna get a couple oprys in. I think it's gonna be it's
- 1:45gonna be a busy week. I love it. It's gonna be fun.
- 1:48Man, it's gonna be fun getting back at it. Yeah, that's always.
- 1:52I feel like it's always like, oh, yeah, do I remember
- 1:53how to do this? Do I? Yeah? What am I doing here?
- 1:57Okay? Cool? Yeah. Whenever we take off like a full month,
- 2:00I'm like, okay, I should like go through the Songhand because even
- 2:04though we've done it a million times, it's still just like, I don't
- 2:07know, it's not there. It must also be weird because the kid's got
- 2:12to be close to done with school right for the summer, so tomorrow is
- 2:15their last day. It's like a weird transition time, like they're like yeah,
- 2:20and you're like, cool, I'm gonna go work now for a while.
- 2:23It's not too bad. I'm just gone for a week and then oh,
- 2:25that's true. This is a light summer man, So it's kind of
- 2:29nice though. That's great. It is nice time. We're gonna, yes,
- 2:35gonna have a lot of fan time, going to do a lot of
- 2:37fun stuff. Probably watched some movies and stuff. Oh but what was the
- 2:42last movie you watch? A beautiful, beautiful segue. I'm continuing on my
- 2:47make it Right list where I watch films I missed this time from nineteen hundred
- 2:53and ninety four. I watched Leon the Professional. You did, Primal Fear,
- 2:58and then Lee All the Professional. Yeah, nicely done, dude.
- 3:02I definitely like, actually wrote down the ones where I was like, yeah,
- 3:06I've never seen that from that one draft. Tell me what you thought
- 3:10about The Professional. Ah, great movie, super compelling. I was very
- 3:16uncomfortable with their relationship and I didn't like it, although I'm glad that was
- 3:22mostly unfounded, which is good. I don't know. I was like,
- 3:25there's a route that we could take here, and I don't want to take
- 3:30it. But yeah, great movie, great acting performances. I mean,
- 3:36Natalie Portman was so good. She was just little too. First thing,
- 3:39she's so it's crazy. Gary Oldman's great already know it's so great. I
- 3:50don't know, I just really liked it. I did feel like, it's
- 3:54so funny with these movies that have these like cult followings, even if you
- 3:58haven't seen them, you kind of know things from them, and so just
- 4:02like little bits would come in and I'd be like, oh, that's what
- 4:05this is, like, you know, like the milk stuff and the don't
- 4:10open the briefcase and you know, all these things. You know, But
- 4:15yeah, it was. It was really great. I liked it a lot.
- 4:17I thought it was very fun. I see why everyone enjoys it so
- 4:19much. It was pretty man. It just made me uncomfortable at points,
- 4:24which is okay. It's okay, it's okay to be uncomfortable sometimes, you
- 4:28know, go through those. Yeah. Yeah, but it was it was
- 4:31fun to see so and now I can be like I saw that, you
- 4:35saw it. I seen it. I don't know if i'd watch it again,
- 4:40though I probably will. It's a fun like action e movie. But
- 4:44yeah, the drama parts were they were all don't I haven't seen it more
- 4:47than twice, I don't think really. Yeah, It's definitely not one of
- 4:51those for me where I'm like, I'm gonna watch that all the time.
- 4:54But it is super great and I'm glad I saw it for sure, for
- 4:57sure. Yeah, how about you? What have you been watching? I
- 5:00watched a movie that I know you saw and you liked, and yeah,
- 5:06I had wanted to watch it and just hadn't gotten to it yet. So
- 5:09finally did. There's a movie called the Greatest Beer Run Ever. Oh nice?
- 5:14Yeah, that nice. There's on the Apple TV Plus machine. And
- 5:21yeah, I did not know that. Peter Fairley helped write and direct it.
- 5:27He we just did Dumb and Dumber and he, you know, did
- 5:30that. I had no idea. I had no idea. Bill Murray was
- 5:33in it and honestly very small role, so it's only in it for about
- 5:40a total of six minutes maybe right, But that was a pleasant surprise.
- 5:46Yeah, zach Efron is pretty great. It's a way out there story and
- 5:50seems pretty improbable, but was based on a true story. Yeah that's crazy.
- 5:56I want to know how much true story there is to it, you
- 6:00know what I mean? Like, I know it's out there. Yeah all
- 6:03right, but but yeah it was. It was a lot more than I
- 6:08thought it was going to be. I thought it was going to be sillier
- 6:11than it was. They really went into just like the politics of the Vietnam
- 6:16War. We also had Russell Crow in it, and I don't know that
- 6:19I remembered that either. Yeah, and he says a pretty big part he
- 6:25does, and that part of the movie is pretty great. Actually, there's
- 6:30some kind of cheesy dialogue in there. There's also this movie needed probably some
- 6:36more money behind it to do some of the special effects type stuff they wanted
- 6:42to do. Yeah, so it felt a little low budget in that sense,
- 6:46but it's still it's it's still a good movie. Yeah, it's worth
- 6:49checking out. I liked it for sure. I was like, oh,
- 6:51this is this is pretty cool. It made me want to because I think
- 6:55a book was written first and made me want to read the book. And
- 6:58maybe you'd get a better idea of what actually happened there too, you know,
- 7:00or how much for sure you know liberties were taken. I bet it's
- 7:04a great book. Yeah, I agree, I bet it's a bit it's
- 7:08amazing. But yeah, I had a lot of similar thoughts. I'm glad
- 7:10you liked it. I did. It was fun lovely. Have you been
- 7:15streaming anything fun? I did? I streamed a movie from twenty twelve.
- 7:19This movie is called The Impossible. I don't know if you've ever heard of
- 7:24that. Wow you do? Le just went through the list and watched The
- 7:29Holy Cow. So this movie was so intense? Did you feel that way?
- 7:33So intense? I liked it a lot though, And full disclosure,
- 7:39I think I watched these pretty close to back to back, and I think
- 7:42I watched The Impossible first, So maybe I was stressed out to the max
- 7:46already. But yeah, tell tell the people what The Impossible is because a
- 7:51lot of people don't know this movie. Yeah, I'd never heard of it
- 7:54till you kind of had brought it up a couple of times. It's a
- 7:58story of a family in Thailand when the two thousand and four tsunami happened in
- 8:03the Indian Ocean, and it's insane, dude, Like it is super crazy.
- 8:09Also at least partially based on a true story, which I didn't know
- 8:13till the very end either. And yeah, it's basically like there's this family
- 8:18of five, I think, and they get split up during the tsunami and
- 8:24then it's just about their story of like, and the filming of the tsunami
- 8:28is so intense it's so crazy, it's so nuts. Yeah, this movie
- 8:33was amazing, and the reason it came up is I think we said this
- 8:37is Tom Hollands first, right, Yep, yep, and he's spectacular in
- 8:43it. I totally get like I feel like in my head, I was
- 8:46like, wow, they let this guy be Spider Man, Like they really
- 8:50took a chance. And now I'm a little bit more like, well,
- 8:54I mean he had done this, which is not nothing. And I think
- 8:58it was Billy Elliott, like on in the West End or something, oh
- 9:03on stage. Okay, yeah, I don't in a movie. I don't
- 9:07Elliott. I never saw that movie. But yeah, yeah, oh that
- 9:09movie's lovely. You'd love that. Uh. Ewan McGregor is great, he's
- 9:15the papa in this, and then Naomi Watts is fantastic in this. I
- 9:20really really liked this movie. I could see myself watching that again. But
- 9:24it is tough. There were boohoo's a plenty that I was stressed out in
- 9:30that movie. Yeah, it's a stressful one. It's pretty wild, dude.
- 9:35Yeah, but it was really well done and really great and maybe yeah,
- 9:39I kind of don't understand how that one flew under the radar. For
- 9:43me because there were a lot of people and it's such like a like it's
- 9:48it's a disaster movie. It's I mean, I know, it seemed like
- 9:52it should have been like a blockbustery kind of movie, but it's really interesting
- 9:56that it wasn't for some reason. But yeah, I really liked that one
- 9:58a lot. I had watching it. That's great, man, Yeah,
- 10:01how about you? What are you streaming? I am on. I just
- 10:07finished episode seven of season two of Yellowstone, and I think this is where
- 10:13I stop. Oh no, it's season I know, and there's five seasons.
- 10:20I just don't know if this is the show for me just as much
- 10:24as I it's not even that. There's just too many ridiculous things that happen
- 10:33for me to get behind it. And it's also another show where every main
- 10:37character is super flawed, so there's like no redemption for someone please, for
- 10:46love of God, they're all horrible. These horrible things happen now. But
- 10:54there's always, like in every episode, like two or three scenes where I'm
- 10:58just like, that is incredible acting and that is so good, and you're
- 11:05like, so, I guess I'll keep watching even though I but I feel
- 11:09gross and I just I think I'm done. You don't have to do that
- 11:16to yourself. Don't do it. I think I'm done. And this is
- 11:20how you and I have evolved. Because I also stopped watching a movie recently
- 11:24because I was just like, this sucks. I'm out. Yeah, and
- 11:28it was like a rom com. I liked the people. I was just
- 11:31like, no, I done. Yeah, But I think we've grown in
- 11:35that way, Like good for us for being able to draw those boundaries.
- 11:39I mean, I know it's such a big deal and everybody's super into it,
- 11:43but it's, uh, yeah, it doesn't make me feel good,
- 11:46and it's gotta hit you the right way, right, Like we all watch
- 11:48silly things. But if it's not interesting and it's you know, like it's
- 11:54fine, Yeah, I support you. It's all I'm I had a little
- 12:00bit of a run there. It was this season and a half, and
- 12:01it's if people are interested in that sort of thing. I mean a lot
- 12:05of people love it. I'm in the minority for sure, but that is
- 12:11that's on peacock if you're if you're trying to watch it, yeah, and
- 12:15different things at different people. You know. I watched some turrash and love
- 12:18it, so I get it. I'm not judging well, and I've watched
- 12:22way darker things too, but yeah, for whatever reason, it just me
- 12:28that like there's no one to root for really makes things hard. It's why
- 12:33I didn't love Succession. Now, Succession had acting that was amazing, like
- 12:41the entire time, so I was just like, well, I'm gonna keep
- 12:43going. But I didn't like, That's not an Alzheimer show for me because
- 12:48I didn't love it, you know, yeah, because they all suck in
- 12:52their own way for sure, you know, so I'm with you on that
- 12:58for sure. Yeah. But what doesn't suck is social media. Do you
- 13:03think we should do some plucks? Yeah? I don't know if I agree
- 13:07with that, but here we are you guys us. If you want on
- 13:11the Twitter machine at Avid Endorsman with a Z or you can go to Facebook
- 13:16dot com slash the Abbot endorsement. You can also go to Instagram and TikTok
- 13:20at the Abbot endorsement there as well. But if you really want to hang
- 13:24out in a spot that actually does not suck, the spot suck at Patreon
- 13:28dot com slash the Avid Endorsment. Yeah, we love our patrons. They're
- 13:33wonderful. They do not suck. So we like to give them a lot
- 13:37of different perks, and one of those is getting a shout out here.
- 13:41Hello to Marsha Griziak, Mary Fox, Nanette Walkley, Ruth Kood, Johan
- 13:46Brosted, Jackie Houston, deb Olk, and Noel Flores. You guys are
- 13:50great, Thank you so much. Another perk we'll give our patrons is an
- 13:56extended version of every episode we put out. We call it our podcast and
- 13:58chill version, where we'll do a top five draft that pertains to the movie
- 14:03we're talking about. And for this one we finally did it. Jesus our
- 14:07top five characters with unnaturally dyed hairs. This one was a struggle. Okay,
- 14:18we finally did it. We were going through and we were like,
- 14:22should we do this genre this this? You just have done so many Simpsons
- 14:28stead Simpsons. Our our guest actually came up with this one, and we
- 14:35thank him for it. Thank God. Yes, we needed help so much.
- 14:39And there's some fun ones there are there's not I was not able to
- 14:43find a lot a lot. I don't know if you were, no,
- 14:46no, and I came up with it was funny because I came up with
- 14:50like seven nice and then as I was looking, I found all of those
- 14:56almost exactly what I did. And then I was like, well, damn,
- 14:58usually this makes my list super long. And now it's just like cool,
- 15:03Yeah, I love it. Well, that's cool. We all we
- 15:07will all look forward to that, Greg, It'll be super fun. So
- 15:13what people were like, did he really just forget his friend's name? Greg?
- 15:18What happened? My name's Rob. It's a movie quote. Focker.
- 15:22Uh, we are here today to talk about a lovely film. Uh.
- 15:26Just straight in line with Jim Carrey June The The Ultimate as he comes out
- 15:33of his comedic cocoon and goes into drama. It seems it's the what is
- 15:39it the twentieth anniversary right of the Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind? And
- 15:46we had to just get the most spotless mind we know in our in our
- 15:48group of friends, he generally helped us come up with that topic. Let's
- 15:52welcome in back. It's Neil Gosh, what's up? Neil? Hello?
- 16:00How's it going? Guys? It's going really well. Good to see you
- 16:03man. Yeah, how are you? I am doing all right? We're
- 16:07finally through another rainstorm in the Northwest and maybe have finally turned the corner into
- 16:11summer weather. So fingers crossed, Yes, let's go. I love it.
- 16:17I love it well that that humidity is doing great things for your hair
- 16:21right now. I love it yet the downward angle, so it's like,
- 16:23really, it's poofed. There's a man who only has the memory of hair
- 16:33on my spotless mind. I had the craziest hair, some pretty good cabbage
- 16:41the same pictures because we were talking about this the other day in reference to
- 16:44a meme of like old timey characters and third fasal hair that had like the
- 16:51big like old Dracula like lobes and use of saying his was not that far
- 16:56off. So yeah, I was really pretty close. I was so shocked
- 17:00that he was not a stoner when I first met him, I was like,
- 17:04you was what with that hair? All the time he did. I
- 17:11really threw people for a loop. I didn't real what. I never had
- 17:15shoes on, like, I was always barefoot, my shorts, I didn't
- 17:19have a lot of unusually Well that's true too. No, you're welcome for
- 17:25all that, but yeah, well we're so pumped to have you here,
- 17:29buddy, and have me here to talk about this movie. U and I
- 17:33think we should just get right in there. What do you guys think.
- 17:34Let's do it. Let's do it. Rental Sunshine up. The Spotless Mind
- 17:37rob Getta started with a rough SYNOPSI alrighty. After a painful breakup, Clementine
- 17:45undergoes a procedure to erase memories of her former boyfriend Joel from her mind.
- 17:51When Joel discovers that Clementine is going to extremes to forget their relationship, he
- 17:55undergoes the same procedure and slowly begins to forget the woman that he he loved.
- 18:00The visually arresting film explores the intricacy of relationships and the pain of loss.
- 18:08Sounds like a good time, wow, cool, all right, if
- 18:15you guys want to turn it off, I don't say warm and fuzz if
- 18:18there have been them a right, you know, we just recorded Dumb and
- 18:22Dumber. So I'm really having a tough time swimzing gears stay, I switch.
- 18:26Yeah, we're doing Jim Carrey June because he did three movies in ninety
- 18:32four and then this one in two thousand and four. Nice they had,
- 18:36Yeah, but this is the most serious. Different that is for sure.
- 18:41Different experiences for sure. Yeah, I just didn't squeeze the number twenty three
- 18:45in there. You're gonna keep it all l that's creepy. That was real
- 18:48creepy. I don't know, I can't do it. Oh, let's go
- 18:52to Rotten Tomatoes and hear what they have to say. Uh, critics have
- 18:56it coming in at ninety two percent, guys, is fresh. That is
- 19:02very fresh. Now. I will say that one is way higher than the
- 19:06three previous movies you talked about. This is critics favorite for sure, big
- 19:11time. Although was it Roger Ebert really liked the p D Bird. He
- 19:15loved the pet bit big time. Pretty to be flying the room with him
- 19:22watching that, it was so, I'll have to send you the quote,
- 19:26but it was. He was like, I didn't love the rest of the
- 19:30movie, but that scene made me laugh out loud. And he was like,
- 19:33if I would have laughed that hard the whole movie, I would have
- 19:37had to go to the hospital or something. Yeah, which is so great.
- 19:41I love that audience members have this at just a couple of ticks above
- 19:45that at ninety four percent, so they agree to for rare, Critics and
- 19:49audience members are very close. I feel like that does always happened, you
- 19:53know, or at least not on this podcast. Yeah, yeah, for
- 19:56sure, for sure. But I think we should go in to what we
- 20:00think and it's time for our hot takes. Hot take, that's a hot
- 20:07take. That's a hot take. Brain damage. Yeah, I couldn't think
- 20:12of one for this movie. Yeah, me, neither sad hot because it's
- 20:18sad. I don't know. I will go first on this. I this
- 20:22movie is heart wrenching. I struggle to say I love it, but I
- 20:29do think I love it. It's just in a special way, but I
- 20:33think it is It's a beautiful story. Like first of all, the narrative
- 20:37style in which they chose to tell it with that sort of like we start
- 20:41at the end to get to the beginning, you know, like that whole
- 20:45thing, right is really great and I like that mechanical a lot. It's
- 20:49really fun. It makes that seem like you like kind of got told a
- 20:53secret at the beginning of it, and then you like kind of realize how
- 20:56how cool it was that you got to start there at the very beginning.
- 21:02But it is just I mean to go from comedies that we just covered into
- 21:07this. For Jim Carrey and his movie career is pretty wild because this is
- 21:12straight up a beautiful, already lovely film. There's some super cool like visual
- 21:18effects stuff that they do in it, which I think you mentioned already,
- 21:22Rob and your synopsis, which is super fun, and we'll talk more about
- 21:26that for sure. It's like kind of like screws with your mind at various
- 21:32points and like lets you see how fragile our memories are and you know,
- 21:37interactions with people are and stuff like that, which I like a lot.
- 21:41Yeah, And it's just got a super interesting it's an interesting mechanic to get
- 21:45there, and it's a super interesting concept of like if you could erase someone,
- 21:51would you do it? And I feel like they don't tell you,
- 21:56They kind of let you decide because I still don't know is it a good
- 21:59idea to do it or not. I sort of leaned towards no, it's
- 22:02not like that's still a part of us growing and getting better, even with
- 22:06the paining. But I really liked this movie a lot. I think it's
- 22:08really masterfully done, even if it's sad and gets me in the fields.
- 22:15And I don't really have a hot take. I guess I don't know that
- 22:18was a hot take. Buddy. Yeah, that was hot smoking. I
- 22:23adored this movie when it came out and watched it several times. This is
- 22:29number ninety four on the IMDb Top two fifty list. It won an OSCAR
- 22:34for Best Original Screenplay and Kate Winslet was nominated for Best Lead Actress. Nice.
- 22:41It was directed by Michelle Gondry, who previous to this pretty much just
- 22:45made crazy music videos for various artists like b York or Radiohead or the Chemical
- 22:52Brothers, and they were pretty out there. Apparently he did do a movie
- 22:56as well, and it was called Human Nature, which was also written by
- 23:02Charlie Coffin. I'd never heard of it. I looked it up and it
- 23:03has like Tim Robbins and Patricia Arquett and Reyese Eipen. Sounds like, I
- 23:08don't know, maybe that's one worth checking out. Charlie Kaufman he wrote this,
- 23:15and before this he wrote Being John Malkovich and Adaptation, and so his
- 23:19stuff is pretty pretty out there as well. Yeah, but the acting performances
- 23:26in this are awesome. It was so fun to see Jim Carrey and Kate
- 23:30Winslett both played characters that weren't really in their wheelhouse previous to this, Carrie
- 23:37being more dramatic and Winslet being more comedic. The practical effects Michelle Gondry did
- 23:42in this were awesome. I remember back in the day watching the behind the
- 23:47scenes and seeing that scene where Jim Carrey is talking to Tom Wilkinson, Yeah,
- 23:53in his memory, remembering the first visit with him, and so it's
- 23:59like him watching himself talk to Tom Wilkinson. So, and the camera pans
- 24:04over, and when the camera pans, he's actually undressing so that he can
- 24:08sit down and be talking to him, and then the camera pans slowly back
- 24:12and he has to put all this stuff back on it all it was all
- 24:18one shot, you know, and it just makes you appreciate that scene so
- 24:23much more and totally like you didn't need to do that, But I think
- 24:29it made everybody else feel so much more invested in the movie and the movie
- 24:33making process. Yeah, my hot take, this is a great movie about
- 24:40the inner workings of a relationship. And this came out after I had a
- 24:44breakup in college and it wrecked me. Yeah, and after watching this movie,
- 24:52I'm pretty sure it directly it's directly responsible for making me stay in relationships
- 24:56much longer than I should have. That's interesting. Yeah, I get it.
- 25:03I mean that totally makes sense, right, Like for sure, maybe
- 25:06we can work it out, like he totally forgot all the things, and
- 25:11then he still wanted to go back and maybe maybe I should do that figured
- 25:15things out. Brutal, brutal a lot. Man, it's a hot take.
- 25:21Yeah, hot take, hot take, Neil, what you got,
- 25:22buddy, Yeah, I mean it's you know, given the ninety two percent
- 25:26Rotten Tomatoes, I don't know how hot this take is, but I this
- 25:30is like, at worst my top three favorite movie. Like I absolutely want
- 25:33this movie. I didn't know that's a super hot take. It is one
- 25:37of my absolute all time favorites. I actually took in college, like a
- 25:41film literature class, and this is one of the movies that we studied in
- 25:42that class, And that was the first time I had that like changed the
- 25:47way I watched movies entirely. That class is very interesting to like really dig
- 25:49into all the detail that goes into setting up a shot and like the backgrounds
- 25:55of things, the way that you know, certain angles are used or certain
- 25:59characters are framed, use of color, like all of these things. That
- 26:02was the first time I was exposed to any of that, and this movie
- 26:03is such a good example of all of those things. Yeah, so you
- 26:07have this like extremely original like the screenplay obviously one an oscar, but it's
- 26:14such an original idea to go into, like the concept of fate versus you
- 26:18know, choice, and like even if you erase someone from your memory,
- 26:23like we see two examples of this in the film, where that didn't change
- 26:26the outcome, they still fell back in love with that person, right,
- 26:30So, like it's this concept of like can you even escape that sort of
- 26:36you know, element of fate or predestination with somebody if the chemistry is there,
- 26:40like can you even avoid it kind of thing? So that was really
- 26:42cool concept. I loved the visuals. The practical effects through so many of
- 26:47the dream sequences were incredible. It made those scenes feel so like uncomfortable and
- 26:52visceral too. Like this, the shots were really close up. The lighting
- 26:56was weird and awkward, you know, like spot lighting from super close,
- 27:00having like dark shadows around him. It felt very much like you were in
- 27:03a dream, like you can't really remember a lot of the details. It's
- 27:06sort of just like four ground spotlighted things, which I thought was like really
- 27:10really well done. There's I mean, I know we're going to get into
- 27:12scenes and all that stuff later, but this was like kind of end to
- 27:15end. It was so visually brilliant, Like there's not there's not like one
- 27:18big climactic moment in this. It's so throughout. It's done so well,
- 27:23and such different textures and qualities to it too, Like the modern memories,
- 27:30the more recent memories. You know, there's like anger represented in sort of
- 27:34the end part of the relationship scenes, and then you have like the flashback
- 27:38scenes when he's a kid, where it's like shot through a vintage camera and
- 27:41it's kind of flickering and it's like you're watching an old vhdste you know.
- 27:45So like the texture contrast between those things to illustrate and really make you like
- 27:48feel those moments is so well done. So all the acting performances are are
- 27:53pretty strong. Of course, Jim Carrey and Kate wins Let both absolutely kill
- 27:56it in their respective roles, and it was really, as you mention,
- 28:00Rob, is really cool to see them in like kind of different flavors than
- 28:03what they typically do. Kate Winsley being like this manic, impulsive character is
- 28:07like not something that you normally would see from her, So I thought she's
- 28:11fantastic in it. Jim Carrey's great too, But the contrast of them,
- 28:15you know, it's just a great conceptually. I love this movie. I
- 28:18think it really digs into anybody who's like been in a relationship that didn't work
- 28:22out Like this obviously hits very hard because you can't help but replay all the
- 28:26moments like good and bad, yeah, and seeing them in sort of this
- 28:30reverse order of like the worst parts first and then working your way back to
- 28:36the beginning when it was sunshine and roses and you're like really falling for that
- 28:38person in the infatuation so strong is such a like heart wrenchingly beautiful but painful
- 28:45way to like look at a relationship. Right, It's like typically you just
- 28:48sort of remember the end parts. You're like, all right, these are
- 28:51the things that didn't work there as the reasons we broke up. And seeing
- 28:53in that order and seeing how these characters decide to, like I guess,
- 28:57sort of give it another shot even though they expect it to fail again.
- 29:00Like that's a that's a really important, interesting concept. The whole thing is
- 29:06just so original. I can't think of any other story that really follows this
- 29:08kind of pattern. Yeah, much less told visually in this way. So
- 29:12it's it's it is one of my all time favorites. I absolutely love this
- 29:15movie. I was unsurprised by how much I still love this movie rewatching it,
- 29:19I cried a bunch as is part for the game. So you know,
- 29:22I heard that not a very hot take, but the only do that's
- 29:26a really really hot take, and I'm so glad we have you on here
- 29:30for this episode. Uh. The only thing that did not age well,
- 29:33uh, well, there was a few things, but the biggest thing was
- 29:37she throws out the gay slur at him. I was not expecting that.
- 29:44Yeah, that really takes It Also like kind of made sense, right,
- 29:47because she's so mad in that point that like, no, it makes like
- 29:52yeah, the amount of like vitriol that they're just hurling at each other at
- 29:56the end of that scene is so and it's like again, it's like it's
- 30:00painfully resonating that like relationships can get to that point, even with somebody that
- 30:04you're like so crazy about, it can get to that point where like you're
- 30:07saying things that you really don't mean, but they're just you're seeing the most
- 30:11hurtful things you can possibly come up with, and like they feel out of
- 30:15character for both of them, but it's it's because you know, this relationship
- 30:18had to hit a breaking point right at some point, and we know that
- 30:22that happened because we saw the aftermath, So like seeing that scene, that
- 30:26is the breaking point. You know that last night, you know that they
- 30:29were together whatever. Right, it's brutal. I mean it's hard to watch,
- 30:33but it's like, yeah, it's I just I can remember being in
- 30:37the spot where I'm like trying to tell myself like just because it's over doesn't
- 30:41mean it was like not worthwhile and beautiful in its own way, and then
- 30:45also being like but also you know, like yeah, you know what I
- 30:48mean, where you're just like, ah, my brain is completely jumbled right
- 30:52now. And it's such a They do such a good job of showing that
- 30:56of like that vulnerability and then you know whatever like other stuff you're bringing into
- 31:03the relationship beforehand, you know, with them being you know, him as
- 31:07a kid and all that, and then jumble that up with poor timing or
- 31:11whatever, and you know, just all the things I thought it was so
- 31:15great for sure, Yeah, I thought. There's there's also like you know
- 31:18when they when they get the tapes and they're like listening to the tapes at
- 31:22the end, like yeah, it is also like it's so heavy and like
- 31:26if you can attempt to put yourself in the shoes of a person who like
- 31:30you just met to you, you just met this person, but then you're
- 31:33getting to butterflies together, and then you're hearing a tape of that person talking
- 31:38about you, like intimately knowing who you are, like describing accurately your worst
- 31:44flaws right like, and then there's that shot of Jim Carrey's hand just shaking
- 31:48on the steering wheel after he kicks out of the car, and I was
- 31:49like, I can't even fathom like what that would how destabilizing it would be
- 31:53to like be in that moment and having just experienced the last twelve hours like
- 31:59into that, you know what I mean. So that felt like that's what
- 32:02therapists wants you to get to when they're like some of those sessions where they're
- 32:07trying to be like okay, but be a fly on the wall, what
- 32:09would you actually think you know in that moment or whatever, Like it's crazy.
- 32:15Also, Frodo is such a creep in this. He's such how much
- 32:20aep in this? He's been corrupted by the ring for sure. I also
- 32:23really loved how because he never saw his face then you never really see his
- 32:30face like in the memories and stuff, even when he tries to turn him
- 32:32around. Yeah, it's yes, Harry, I remember some of the like
- 32:38cool. Some of the distorted face effects are like just terrifying the first time
- 32:43I watched this, Like there's second film adjacent it kind of is. There's
- 32:47some like thrillery moments where, especially like once they start to sort of like
- 32:52chase through the memories, it definitely gets a little more like that. There's
- 32:55I think it's a second time that he's like remembering the office. Yes,
- 33:00and they're like they're like that you already bet you he's back in a memory
- 33:02we've already deleted or whatever. And there's that scene where he like turns and
- 33:06there's a woman like standing in the doorway and her face is all melted.
- 33:08It's such like a jump scare that you don't really expect, Yeah, from
- 33:13like not even a major character. It's just like a random you know,
- 33:15but yeah, it is very well done. Again, Visual effects man they're
- 33:19so good in this movie. They were so cool. Yeah, really cool.
- 33:22I agreed, love it. Oh well, hot take buddy. Let's
- 33:25let's go and talk about some of these acting performances, and let's pick the
- 33:30dude. The dude. I'm the dude, So that's what you call me,
- 33:35you know that? Or his dudeenus or duder or you know el dude
- 33:42reno. If you're not into the whole brevity thing, who's your dude?
- 33:45Neil So I originally wrote down Kate Winslet. I eventually changed it for Jim
- 33:49Carrey. I would be perfectly fine with either of those options. They both
- 33:53terrific in this movie, and they share screen time almost equally, so it's
- 33:57kind of hard to pick which one is more of the lead. I think
- 34:00Kate Willson maybe is more important to the story. I mean, she's even
- 34:02though it centers around Joel, she is all of the action happening around him.
- 34:07Yeah, so I kind of felt like she's maybe the more relevant character
- 34:12in this and you get to see her go from like super sweet to like
- 34:15extremely mean, you know, a wide range for her character. But yeah,
- 34:21both of them are terrific in this Yeah, she was so great It
- 34:23was just her character was fun and like spontaneous and exciting. And I can
- 34:28get how a kind of repressed guy would feel like if he could be with
- 34:32someone like her, it could be more exciting, it could give it out
- 34:36some more meaning maybe. And I thought she was just wonderful in that role.
- 34:40I would pick her. Is that's who you had too? Yeah,
- 34:45that's I actually picked her as well for all the same reasons. It felt
- 34:49like she she was like sort of a metaphor for life for Joel, and
- 34:53as life she is growing and changing and her hair color is changing, and
- 34:59yeah, she's like, you know, she's up and down right all these
- 35:02things, right, She's mercurial, but also she is life moving and changing,
- 35:07and Joel just kind of is staying the same, except for those moments
- 35:10where he kind of surrenders to it and lets himself go somewhere in the moment,
- 35:15which I think is beautiful in its own right. But I just thought
- 35:17she was really dynamic and and like you guys both have said, it's fun
- 35:22to see her play a role where she gets to, you know, be
- 35:27kind of the like mercurial one, Like she gets to be kind of kind
- 35:31of crazy for lack of a better word, right, But she's out there,
- 35:35she's living, she's a little bit more of you know, like passion
- 35:38and you know, jumping from thing to thing or whatever. So I just
- 35:43thought she was awesome. But I'm with you, everybody's they're both great.
- 35:47Yeah, Jim Carrey was super good too. He just was kind of a
- 35:51boring guy and he got to show off a little bit more when like he's
- 35:57a kid in his memories. You know, for sure, is a little
- 36:00bit more Jim Carrey in that on Our Table was definitely like the most felt
- 36:06the most Jim Carrey adjacents, you know, for sure, for sure.
- 36:09But for the most part he was just kind of a kind of a gloomy
- 36:13guess. Yeah. Yeah, Like he's got that one line where they're on
- 36:16the ice that's beautiful, you know, and his reactions to things are all
- 36:21really great. But she seems like she's more of the the like change agent
- 36:27or something. I don't know. She seems more active than him, the
- 36:30agent orange. Yeah, hey, and blue and red and green and yeah,
- 36:36all the things. But yeah, there's also there's a nice detail in
- 36:40I think it's I forget if it's throughout the entire film, or if it's
- 36:44just towards the beginning. But the use of music when they're interacting with each
- 36:47other versus when they're not is really like great, it's a it's a great
- 36:52subtle layer to this where it's like, you know, there's this chemistry and
- 36:54enchantment that they're feeling around each other that doesn't really exist not around each each
- 37:00other, and so like the music just kind of plays only when they're talking
- 37:02to each other and then when they're not, like it's it's not don't Yeah,
- 37:07so cool. Yeah, it's really neat. It made it more awkward
- 37:09when they would stop exactly. Yeah. Yeah, it's like just keep talking
- 37:15that way. Yeah, I love that. Should we talk about some of
- 37:20the supporting folks? Should we go to the Tucci? This one? Yeah?
- 37:27This one? So I ended up you know, I ended up picking
- 37:30ultimately Jim Carrey for my dude, and I put Kate Winslet is my twoch.
- 37:34But it's one of those like I actually liked the supporting cast a lot.
- 37:38There was kind of they they all felt like they were there in equal
- 37:42measure. Ye, and like the four strongest supporting you know kind of characters
- 37:45were all like this band that each played like a little bit of a different
- 37:50flavor but really well together, like Mark Ruffal and Kristen Dunce their whole dynamic,
- 37:55and then like how that interacted with Howard and that whole side of the
- 37:59story was really interesting. So I had a hard time picking on this one.
- 38:02I honestly I went with Kate Winsley with as a total cop out,
- 38:06but I kind of like I couldn't pick just one because it felt more like
- 38:09they were a cast of characters together. So yeah, I get that that's
- 38:13a very sitting on the fence answer, but that's kind of where I landed
- 38:15on it. Sure, I also had a hard time picking one, But
- 38:21I think I think this is one of the first things I saw Mark Ruffalo
- 38:24in that I really liked him in Sure, and I've always thought he's had
- 38:30such great comedic timing for being like a dramatic actor. I thought he was
- 38:35really fun in this. I always felt bad that he liked Mary so much
- 38:40and he could see how obsessed she was with Howard, and you kind of
- 38:45just like, oh, but he he wants to be with her, Why
- 38:49can't you be with her? For him himself? At the end and goes
- 38:53outside it's kind of like thrown in the towel, like he can't really win
- 38:59too. Yeah, I would have picked him, but what did you have,
- 39:01Bukes I picked. I just thought he was really great. I'm kind
- 39:07of with you. I mean, he's such a creep, such a good
- 39:12job he does such a good job of being that the fact that he kept
- 39:16all of the things that he's a monster, it's straight sociopathic man. And
- 39:21I like, I always forget that he also stole a pair of her panties
- 39:23when they were doing her memory. Well, oh god, that's gross.
- 39:29He reads exactly what he had said to her on the ice and then recites
- 39:34it to her, Like what a creep? Yeah, great, acting brutal.
- 39:39I'm kind of I think it's really interesting though, Like they almost that,
- 39:51like those three people almost feel like the worst case of who we are
- 39:54in relationships. Like he's like kind of stockery, you know, like he's
- 40:00getting over something in the past that she's not. She's not able to deal
- 40:02with it, but you know, like she hasn't dealt with it right,
- 40:07and then Ruffalo is just like kind of oblivious and doesn't understand that the timing
- 40:12doesn't work out. You know, I just think that's super interesting. And
- 40:15Tom Wilkinson is a pretty big dirt bag. Yeah for sure. Yeah,
- 40:21yeah, okay sucks. And that was also like the first time I watched
- 40:24this, that was such a good twist that that was good. When his
- 40:29wife says you can have him, you did and it drives off and I
- 40:32was like, oh my goodness, I know, I remember being floored by
- 40:36that as well. Sam. Yeah, yeah, I actually kind of forgot
- 40:38about it too. The rewatch. I was like, oh, yeah,
- 40:42that's right, Oh my god, yeah, level it is. It is
- 40:46pretty dirt bag, especially the fact that she still works there. Right,
- 40:51This whole thing happened weird and like you wiped her memory of your infidelity slash
- 40:55romantic relationship that you had with her and then she was still your secretary,
- 41:00right, like what are we doing? Wild? He didn't wipe his own
- 41:04memory either, kept though, Yeah, yeah, I still knew about it.
- 41:07Yeah, that's not cool for sure. Crazy. But I love Tom
- 41:14Wilkinson though, and I thought he was great in this. He actually I
- 41:16think I just saw you passed away was awesome. I always enjoyed him.
- 41:22She was great in this. She gets to actually do some stuff, which
- 41:28was fun. Too. I sort of early on was like, oh she
- 41:30doesn't she going to be underutilized, And I was like, oh no,
- 41:35she gets everything unravels, which I really liked. Yeah, I've always loved
- 41:40her. She's great. I love when she gets stoned and she's like all
- 41:45freaking out that she's going to hear the Howard's gonna come. Really funny,
- 41:52what are we going to do? I don't know what are we gonna do?
- 41:55I just said, I don't know. I don't know. H She's
- 42:01great. There's not a ton of other like big parts though. Really,
- 42:07dude, I did not I remember that David Cross was uh was in it
- 42:13at all. I did not know the two people who were his friends,
- 42:17Yeah, going into this and so that was that was a trip. Yeah,
- 42:22there was. It's kind of I'm sure this is fully unintentional, but
- 42:24it's a funny little parallel that he's building like the birdhouse, and every time
- 42:30I see that scene, like he's just like hammering the birdhouse in the back
- 42:32of their conversation happening in the kitchen. Yeah, And it just makes me
- 42:36think of Buster from uh A relative development building the bike outside, yes,
- 42:43and Michael just being like Buster, you can't do that on the balcony body,
- 42:47so I know that they don't play the same character, but the little
- 42:52arrested development tie in of like just doing this kind of inappropriately timed childish behavior
- 42:57like in the background. It's really funny. Also, he's got like a
- 43:00full wood shop in their kitchen. I don't even know, man, he's
- 43:04like in crafts. The whole background conversation of how he crashed the plane at
- 43:07the very end is also like hilarious to me. Yes, yes, I
- 43:13didn't crash the plane. The plane crashed. The plane itself chose to crash.
- 43:20It's great. And I've seen that Jane Adams, who plays his wife
- 43:24in that, I've seen her pop up in a lot of different things,
- 43:28and this was probably one of the first things I ever saw. And for
- 43:30sure, yeah, she's doing a ton of work. I feel like,
- 43:35nothing like huge, but yeah, always around cool. But those were the
- 43:40main characters, for sure. Agreed, Yeah, it was. It's all
- 43:45in relatively small cast. Actually, I mean, the vastatory of it is
- 43:49just the main two. But yeah, you know, you basically get like
- 43:52six people's names and that's the whole thing, right, Yeah, Well,
- 43:58why don't we why don't we go and pick some of these scenes and let's
- 44:01pick our favorite one. Let's pick the dinguss So is quite simple, really,
- 44:07dingus dingus. I could talk about my dingas all night long. I'm
- 44:10gonna kiss you das. You guys want to go first. I have no
- 44:14hot takes on this one. It was tough. This was tough. Yeah,
- 44:21well let's let's start with you, Neil. Let's unless you would like
- 44:22us to go first. I so I left this blank because there was just
- 44:27like, not really a this doesn't have like a climax scene to me.
- 44:31I mean, there's a couple that stick in my mind. There's a couple
- 44:35of scenes that I really love, but I wouldn't say that they're like famously
- 44:37the best scene, you know, obviously the the cover art of the movie
- 44:43is them on the frozen Charles River, which is a pretty good shot.
- 44:45I think there's a few others that kind of fit that well. I really
- 44:50love the scene where when it's the as little kids and it's Joel hammering the
- 44:53bird and then them walking away and they'll like cut back and forth between both
- 44:59of them being a little it's like walking away. Yeah, I love that
- 45:01scene. It's super hard, but I also just like love the way it's
- 45:04shot. It's like you have this, you know, we all have like
- 45:07these like moments from our childhood that just like are really unfun memories for us.
- 45:14And like the idea of being able to have somebody who is like a
- 45:17person you care about as an adult be able to relive that with you and
- 45:22like be support for you through a moment where you didn't have support the first
- 45:24time around is like really touching and like such a cool idea of how to
- 45:29shoot that scene. So I love that scene a lot. And of course
- 45:32that has the whole like old VHS tape quality to it, and the whole
- 45:37the way this shot as well, So it's very like a sad and bittersweet,
- 45:40but it's like such a well shot scene. This whole movie is that,
- 45:44I mean, honestly sure, if I had to pick one, I
- 45:51think when they break into the house on the beach, yes, the memory
- 45:57is leaving, so the house starts falling apart. We see like them walking
- 46:01in sand now and you can actually see the house falling apart around them,
- 46:07and they explained like what they were both feeling at that moment, and they
- 46:12both felt so like vulnerable in that moment, and then she ends with him
- 46:17like, well, why don't we why don't we change this ending a little
- 46:22bit, you know, since we weren't able to do that, And uh,
- 46:27yeah, it's just it was beautiful. I thought that it was the
- 46:30beautiful scene that like imagery of the world crumbling around them while they're going through
- 46:35this is so great. And that's felt like inception seeing that from Good Call.
- 46:45Yeah, that's a good one too. Yeah, there's a lot there's
- 46:46there's not like a you know, so many of the movies that we do,
- 46:50like there's like a punchy, like big climax scene, and I don't
- 46:52necessarily feel that this movie has that. But there's so many scenes that are
- 46:55really well done, and especially like within the memories, I mean, the
- 47:00books disappearing as they're walking through the bookstore is a really good one. Just
- 47:04like how the memories like get deleted around him is so cool. So there's
- 47:08the practical effects of all of that has done so well. So I love
- 47:12the visuals of all of that stuff. But yeah, I think that's ending
- 47:15scene. I can get down with that. That's a pretty powerful one where
- 47:16they're kind of like finally reconciling their relationship and like trying to maybe do something
- 47:22different. There's an interesting thing with that scene too, because you know,
- 47:25she says, like meet me in Montak and they have this whole thing.
- 47:29That's the quote of the movie, proud that. Yeah. But the interesting
- 47:31thing about that is, you know, ultimately that's not her saying that.
- 47:35That's his projection of her in his own memory that's saying that. And he
- 47:38has that conversation with with Howard earlier in the film where he's like asking him
- 47:44to do something and he's like, well, I'm just part of your memory,
- 47:45Like this is you, I'm you. Yeah, So, like,
- 47:49you know, keeping that concept in mind in the last scene, it's very
- 47:52interesting that, like it's a moment where he finally breaks out of like his
- 47:57monotony and gets his subconscious to do something spontaneous by doing what he thinks Clumb
- 48:01would do in that situation, which is to plant this idea of spontaneity to
- 48:07like leave and run away and go to Montak the next day. And then
- 48:10you know, she evidently did the same thing in her memory wipe where she
- 48:14planted this idea of spontaneiti. So they like end up running into each other.
- 48:17But it's a very interesting concept that, like it's not that she was
- 48:21actually planting that for him, because she wasn't in his memory. It was
- 48:23his memory of her, right, So I love that talk about inception e
- 48:30right, yeah, for real, it's the honest exception where it's like is
- 48:32that his it doesn't matter, He's where he wanted to be either way,
- 48:37you know. Like well, even the I mean the closing you know,
- 48:39closing scene with the song and right before the credits roll, like you see
- 48:43them kind of like frolicking in the sand, and then it it like it's
- 48:45like the tape skips and you just see that clip over and over yeap,
- 48:49which is kind of a cool also like visual indication of like can you escape
- 48:52your fate? Or are you going to end up with this person over and
- 48:55over no matter how many times you try to do something else, you know
- 48:58what I mean? Right, I don't know. I love it. That's
- 49:02great. I had the house scene written down for sure, which I really
- 49:07liked. I also love the we kind of mentioned it, but the when
- 49:13Kirsten Dunstan what's the doctor's name again, Tom Wilkinson, when they realized that
- 49:20or when I guess she realizes because he knows the whole time, which again
- 49:22is a strange power imbalance for an employee boss relationship. But when she realizes,
- 49:30right that they have that history and his wife comes and you know all
- 49:34that, And I loved the line where the wife was like take pity on
- 49:37the girl, like you can't like, don't do that, you know to
- 49:42him and stuff. I love that. So that whole scene I just thought
- 49:45was really really great. Yeah. Sure, intent you didn't really see it
- 49:50coming either, Yeah, yeah, for sure, which that was a solid
- 49:53twist. It was well played, right and and you kind of see like,
- 49:57oh, maybe this procedure is not like super ethical, you know or
- 50:01whatever, right, like, this is dangerous in a lot of ways.
- 50:06You know. By the way, the name of the company, Lacuna,
- 50:09means like a gap in something, which I thought is like it's like a
- 50:13gap or a void in something, So it's like very apt. But that's
- 50:16you know, the name of the company that's doing this. Yeah, that
- 50:20was well done, which I like too because it's like you can use that
- 50:23for relationships, right, Like that's why you keep going back to someone because
- 50:28there is that gap in you that they have to fill. Even if it's
- 50:31like not a happy ending, it's still you know, part of your progression
- 50:36as a person, you know, Yeah, totally. One of the more
- 50:37literal translations is literally like a gap in a book, like page is missing
- 50:42from a book, which is of course what happens with this diary. So
- 50:45yeah, so very fun little choice there. And then I loved the the
- 50:52where they meet again on the beach. Stuff is just so beautiful because we
- 50:58know at that point all the stuff that has happened, or we have an
- 51:00idea, and it's just like that they're meeting again. It's just great totally,
- 51:07but again, hard to pick a specific scene it is. I also
- 51:10love just the very last scene where it all leads up to that they're listening
- 51:15to Joel's thoughts about Clementine from the tape and she's like, I gotta leave.
- 51:22But then they're in the hallway and they explain to each other like this
- 51:28is what I do in relationships, and this is what I do in relationships,
- 51:31is like, Okay, let's do this. Let's still try. If
- 51:37it doesn't last forever, it's worth doing anyway. Yeah, and then that
- 51:43awesome Beck song starts up and then we see them and on the beach in
- 51:46montak again, And yeah, I thought it was a really beautiful way to
- 51:51end the film agreeably. I also really liked that this is a terrible transition
- 51:55from how Heart the scene where he's chasing Clementine and she's like stalking out down
- 52:04the street away from him, and like the cars crashing and stuff, and
- 52:07it's that shot where he walks down the street and ends up at the end
- 52:10of the street and everything's reversed and the cars on both ends. Yeah,
- 52:14that whole shot is all one continuous and it looks so cool, such a
- 52:19cool effect. And for a movie that used a ton of practical effects,
- 52:22they're like, cgi effects are really cool. Yeah, you're well done.
- 52:27They didn't feel like weird or dated or like they looked hokey, Like it
- 52:30was kind of yeah, pretty effective. Like the car disappears after they get
- 52:35out of it, you know, in that one scene, and like you
- 52:37said, the books and stuff and all that. I just think that's super
- 52:40neat. Yeah, for sure, love that good show. So yeah,
- 52:45I don't know if just picking one, do we pick one? We all
- 52:50liked the house. We could do the house disappearing. I'm down at the
- 52:52house because it's pretty to the meet me in Montak which yeah right, yeah
- 52:59for sure, which is one of the best quotes. Is that the title
- 53:00of the episode. I feel like it is. I think, so,
- 53:04yeah, that feels right, love that, that feels right. I mean,
- 53:07I think we should probably go to the next section talk about those other
- 53:09quotes. Love it. Lets you show me the money, show me the
- 53:14money, show me. It was a beautiful segue. Thank you, he's
- 53:22good. He's good. It's good about that one. So yeah, burned
- 53:28the biggest one with we knew that one was coming. That was that's a
- 53:34surprise to know one. I think, yeah, for sure. What do
- 53:37you got for a quote there, Neil, I've got a few one here,
- 53:39I I thought, the okay, so she's got very early on,
- 53:45like first basically first thing in the movie, she has the I apply my
- 53:47personality in a paste. I was like that one, Yeah, that's great.
- 53:52And then she like has that like you know, moment of honesty where
- 53:57she's like talking about herself, and then she finishes it off with I'm a
- 54:00vindictive little bit truth be told. It was like a hilarious transition, all
- 54:06right, which also ends up being very true. As we find out her
- 54:13whole rant about the use of the word nice, which of course is a
- 54:15bit of a recurring theme throughout the movie, and then like you see Joel
- 54:19finally break away from that word at the very end after they meet the second
- 54:22time, which is kind of cool. There's the that is the oldest trick
- 54:28in the Stalker book. Really there's a Stalker book. Joel talking to Howard
- 54:37the doctor, is there any risk of brain damage? Well, technically speaking,
- 54:42mister Bears, the procedure is brain damage. Is brain damage? Yeah?
- 54:45I like that, but nothing you miss I also like the when Joel's
- 54:50kind of it sounds like he's sort of like reading from his diary or writing
- 54:54in his diary, recounting the scene in the restaurant, and he's like,
- 54:59are we that couple? Are we the dining deaths? Which I was like,
- 55:01that line stuck with me for a long time, and like in other
- 55:07relationships I was in, I was like, God, are we are We're
- 55:10not really talking? Are we like them in this scene? That one stuck
- 55:15with me for a long time, which is funny because I can go either
- 55:17way, right, It could either be like we're comfortable, just yeah,
- 55:22we don't need to fill the space right right, But it's riding the line
- 55:27between comfort and complacency, you know, Yeah, Like has a routine become
- 55:30all there is? Or is there? You know? Yeah, And then
- 55:36I had that I wrote down that trick, Babby Boy. It's so weird
- 55:44when you that scene again where it's Tom Wilkinson and it's the second time he's
- 55:49doing it. It's the pat trick. Baby. Yeah, quite a lot,
- 55:54so yeah, I had to make the list. Also, there's a
- 55:58line when Clem is kind of like having her sort of breakdown while Patrick is
- 56:05like reusing all of Joel's you know stuff materials and it makes me laugh every
- 56:09single time just because of the delivery of it. But he's like, can
- 56:13we talk about it? No? Yeah, she's like going into an apartment.
- 56:19Yeah, she knows he's a creed. We certainly cannot, certainly cannot.
- 56:25So those are all the ones I wrote down. I was in my
- 56:28fields for the rest of the movie, so I didn't think to write anything
- 56:30else down. I heard nice. Yeah, I had a few as well.
- 56:36I really loved the this is it Joel It's going to be gone soon.
- 56:39It's like, I know, it's like, what do we do he
- 56:42said, enjoy it. Oh yeah, God, I love that one so
- 56:45much. I really loved that. I really liked that. I could die
- 56:52right now, clem. I'm just happy. I've never felt that before.
- 56:53I'm just exactly where I want to be. But then it just gets weird
- 56:58when Patrick does it word for word, it kind of takes it away.
- 57:02If I'm honest. Yeah, I like his just dry delivery and then her
- 57:07immediate I need to go home. Yeah, I kind of get out of
- 57:09here. Yeah. I love when they're talking in the hallway at the end.
- 57:16It's like, I can't see anything that I don't like about you.
- 57:17She's like, but you will, you will, and you know, you'll
- 57:21think of things and I'll get bored with you and feel trap because that's what
- 57:23happens with me. He just says okay. She says okay as well,
- 57:28and then that's all. I mean, that's all the end of the movie.
- 57:30It's so great. Yeah, soot okay. I love that. I
- 57:35liked uh Patrick, Mary hates me. I've never been popular with the ladies.
- 57:38Stan says, maybe if you stop stealing their panties. Yeah, that's
- 57:45great, lie, even if he's like that's dude, Like stop it one
- 57:52of the funniest things in the film that I kind of forgot, and it's
- 57:54a memory where they have like parked next to a drive in theater and they're
- 58:00kind of doing the mystery science theater theater some kind of things. It was
- 58:07great and like he's like, my god, there's people coming out of your
- 58:09butt because they just come out of nowhere. They are. Yeah, I
- 58:15love that, and the whole like my name is Wally AND's like, but
- 58:19how can I love a man named Wally? I thought that whole bit was
- 58:22pretty great and one that just kind of I don't know why it hit me,
- 58:30but it's just when Stan was talking to Kirsten Dunst, when Mark Ruffle
- 58:34was talking to Kirsten Dunst and talking about how he had seen with Tom Wilkinson,
- 58:39and he was like, you looked happy, happy with the secret And
- 58:45I don't know why that was just like that because she's interesting, did you
- 58:49know? And he's like, I mean not really, but yeah, yeah,
- 58:52yeah, that's great. I don't know. Well, what did you
- 58:55have? You Sorry? I took a bunch. Uh No, you're good.
- 58:58I still have several left. I felt specifically called out by this one
- 59:04why do I fall in love with every woman I see who shows me the
- 59:07least bit of attention? Yeah? I was like, hey, hold on
- 59:12down, which can I watch the movie please? Right away? That's right?
- 59:22I know, it's like right, yeah. I was seriously like,
- 59:25okay, we're really gonna buckle in for this one. Uh. Blessed or
- 59:30the forgetful as they get the better even of their blunders, I think is
- 59:32a great line. Yeah, well, yeah, I love that, and
- 59:38then followed by the how happy is the blameless vessels lot the world forgetting?
- 59:44Bite, the world forgot eternal sunshine of the spotless mind, each prayer accepted,
- 59:49each wish resigned, and I totally forgot that. That's where the title
- 59:53of this movie comes from. And I think it's so beautiful. A really
- 59:59good deal was with me. Now there you go. It good. I
- 1:00:05though that was funny that she. I mean, the reference to the Bartlet's
- 1:00:07quote book feels like a very mid two thousands kind of move. Yes,
- 1:00:12yeah, it feels like a like a liberal arts degree total. It's like
- 1:00:17someone saying like, oh, yeah, I need to check my becket,
- 1:00:21you know, like, yeah, there's a certain era that's gonna knows a
- 1:00:24lot of people that, oh dude, I spent so much time with the
- 1:00:30Beckett just I never got into the Beckett thing. Oh dude, collect like
- 1:00:37baseball cards or anything. I had some hockey cards, but that was about
- 1:00:39it. I was never a big baseball guy, so I feel like that
- 1:00:43a big reason. But yeah, people get into it. That's funny I
- 1:00:47did. That was a good big time. Uh. I think those were
- 1:00:52all the quotes that I had. There was one last one that I had,
- 1:00:57and the only reason I wrote it down was because it made me think
- 1:01:00of that bit in Star Wars, and it was Joel talking about sand is
- 1:01:05overrated. It's just tiny little rocks. It made me think, oh,
- 1:01:10that's really great. Yeah. I was trying to remember when he said that
- 1:01:17if that was a callback to something that she said later or like earlier in
- 1:01:22the relationship later movie. But no, that was just just threw that in
- 1:01:27there, just his own shower thoughts. Nothing else. Yeah. One one
- 1:01:31thing I loved. I think it was right before I think one of you
- 1:01:35guys said the quote, the enjoy it quote right before that, when she's
- 1:01:39like or when he's like. One of my favorite things as a kid was
- 1:01:43my Huckleberry hound all, I think your name is magical. Yeah, And
- 1:01:47like because there's that earlier interaction where he's like, Huckleberry Hound, No,
- 1:01:52I don't remember. I don't know what you're talking about, and it's like,
- 1:01:57damn, I don't know. I just really liked that's followed by the
- 1:02:00enjoy it and it's you know, I don't know. It just it brings
- 1:02:04me back to that sort of like, yeah, everything is temporary, like,
- 1:02:08so why not just enjoy what you can from it? You know,
- 1:02:12like I don't know. At some point, aren't we we're over baking the
- 1:02:15dish, right, like we're thinking too hard about it. Just be there.
- 1:02:19But I did love that. It was just another one of those things
- 1:02:22where you feel like smart because you realize, you know that he's been a
- 1:02:29race so of course he doesn't remember what Huckleberry Hound is because that makes me
- 1:02:34think of her. There are just a lot of things like that in this
- 1:02:37movie. Or like when when Mark Ruffalo is about to leave the apartment and
- 1:02:43he only less off I saw that side of the marker. You're like,
- 1:02:50oh yeah, because you see that early on. I was like, what
- 1:02:52is that too? And then you're like, oh, yeah, he didn't
- 1:02:58wash off the other side with Marker. Yes, so great. This movie
- 1:03:01is so great. Stuff like that, it's so fun. It's at least
- 1:03:07maybe even ninety four, maybe even maybe even nice. Well, let's move
- 1:03:15on to Biggs boohoo moments. Oh strong men also cry strong men, also
- 1:03:27a crying game. I uh had a tough time. I felt like there
- 1:03:32were earlier ones that I've missed. I did come up with six, so
- 1:03:42yeah, I'll go through them. The scene under the covers where she admits
- 1:03:45she had a doll with her name and telling her she can't be ugly,
- 1:03:49and he is consoling her and he says, please let me keep this memory.
- 1:03:53Yeah, She's like, am I pretty? Like, yeah, Jesus,
- 1:03:59pretty pretty. You're so pretty. But then when he's just like,
- 1:04:03please let me keep this movie, it was like, oh, yeah,
- 1:04:06it's I love that. When Howard tells Mary that they have history and she
- 1:04:13wanted the procedure done after his wife caught them, Yeah, that's brutal um.
- 1:04:20He says, remember me or no. She says, remember me,
- 1:04:25try your best and maybe we can. Oh and maybe we can, because
- 1:04:30he had said maybe we could just give it another go around. I think
- 1:04:33they're in the coffee shop and all like earth bookstore and the book start leaving.
- 1:04:38Yes, yeah that did get me that part for sure. The I'm
- 1:04:44gonna be gone soon? What do we do? Enjoy it so much that
- 1:04:48in retrospect that might be my favorite scene. Actually, yeah, like I
- 1:04:53love that line so much. It was beautiful that the end of the house
- 1:04:59scene that I that picked for the Dingus, the just that meet me in
- 1:05:01Montalk yep, meet me in Montalk for sure, and then the very end
- 1:05:04scene in the hallway. So those are the six. But yeah, I
- 1:05:12didn't know if there were some earlier ones because there were some sad moments,
- 1:05:15but nothing that actually chokes me up. It wasn't until towards the end of
- 1:05:20the movie for me, well that Neil, do you have any others?
- 1:05:26I think little kid hammering the bird? Yeah, okay, I was sad.
- 1:05:32I didn't like that. That was a pretty sad one. I'm so
- 1:05:38ashamed when he says when he says, do you really think you'd be a
- 1:05:44good mom? And she's like, how dare you say that to me?
- 1:05:45Is that s That was brutal. It didn't get me to cry, though,
- 1:05:48And I remember thinking specifically at the time like, oh, that's interesting,
- 1:05:53but it was Bruce's such a twist of the knife man, such a
- 1:05:57real conversation, you know, I mean, it's it's one of those things
- 1:06:01where like the words escape before you can think better of saying them out loud,
- 1:06:04and then you immediately realize how hurtful that is to say. Then if
- 1:06:09you do think that, you have to think of a better way to say
- 1:06:12it, right, for sure, just don't say it, because what does
- 1:06:15that help anyone? Right? But it takes a certain number of years of
- 1:06:18maturity and relationships to understand not to say that out loud. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:06:23I think so. Yeah, I'm trying to think of there's anything early
- 1:06:28in the movie that I mean, there's a scene where like he really early
- 1:06:30on where like he's crying in the car and driving, but at that point
- 1:06:33there's so little context for why he's crying that I exactly sarily think that one
- 1:06:39would hit play that didn't get And those are the actual opening credits, Yeah,
- 1:06:44already ten minutes into the movie. That's funny about first nonlinear is hard
- 1:06:48for me to follow sometimes, I feel, yeah, for sure, what
- 1:06:51about when he first gets the card from David Cross that says that Clementine I
- 1:06:58was wondering about that. Oh no that I didn't write that down, so
- 1:07:00that must not have got me. That is like a hope he was really
- 1:07:05upset about it. Yeah, his acting in that scene was really good.
- 1:07:10It's so good. So there are two more that I don't think we've said.
- 1:07:15The first one is and this was one where they just say some brutal
- 1:07:21things to each other, but uh, the I can't remember the scene is
- 1:07:27like this is the last time I saw you? And then yeah, I
- 1:07:31think it's the same scene right where she's like, I bet you assumed them
- 1:07:35one tonight and he's like, see, clem, I I assume you did
- 1:07:40them one tonight. Or she was like are you wondering I did? And
- 1:07:43he's like, I assume you did. Isn't that how you get people to
- 1:07:45like you? And I was like, damn, bro, like, yeah,
- 1:07:48that is brutal and that got me. That got me for sure.
- 1:07:54And then the other one, uh, just when when he's able to make
- 1:07:59it rain and memory as they're trying to get away, that was a beautiful,
- 1:08:02so beautiful that just that just got me. Like it wasn't even sad
- 1:08:06necessarily, it was just like, well, what a beautiful like we're in
- 1:08:11the music trying to Yeah, it's gorgeous. I really liked that. So
- 1:08:15that guy, I feel that. I definitely feel that. Yeah, so
- 1:08:18what is uh? That was eight? So eight? Yeah? Eight?
- 1:08:23So pretty good? Pretty good? Pretty pretty good? But fair numbers nailed
- 1:08:28it? Yeah? Nice? Was that more or less than you? K
- 1:08:30neil? Honestly? Man Like it starts to really the second half of this
- 1:08:35movie starts to really just come together, so they bleed together. Separating them
- 1:08:40out by scene or by line is kind of hard. There's just times that
- 1:08:43hit and it's well, and it's different when you love a movie and have
- 1:08:47such a history with it, because I know I'm that way, so for
- 1:08:50sure get that. It's just I don't know, I especially when I see
- 1:08:54like characters. This is true in real life too, when I see other
- 1:08:57people going through loss like that hits me worse than when I'm going through loss.
- 1:09:00I don't know why, but that's just like that is always like a
- 1:09:03big trigger emotionally for me. So like seeing these like trying to hold onto
- 1:09:09this relationship and going through these like painful parts of relationship, but also longing
- 1:09:13for not letting it go and realizing it's too late because you've already gone through
- 1:09:16this thing, halfway through this process, realizing that it was a mistake,
- 1:09:19like that whole thing. But yeah, there's some really banger moments in this
- 1:09:25movie for sure. Yeah, I love that. That's great. Well,
- 1:09:29should we go ahead and do a little movie trivia here? I think we
- 1:09:31should. Let's do that. Great, let's see. Despite the fact that
- 1:09:36Charlie Kaufman's script and Michael or Michel sorry Gondari's visual concepts were closely followed,
- 1:09:44the cast members were allowed many chances to improvise. Elijah Wood and Mark Ruffalo
- 1:09:49improvised extensively, apparently, and much of the dialogue between Jim Carrey and Kate
- 1:09:55Winslet resulted from videotape to rehearsal sessions during which the two became close by sharing
- 1:10:00tales of real life relationships and heartbreaks. So I just thought that was cool
- 1:10:03that it was, you know, close to what was planned, but also
- 1:10:08there was some room there. I bet that felt felt fun for them to
- 1:10:11kind of go and maybe is why it feels so real at various points.
- 1:10:15Yeah, there was actually another line. I forgot to write this down on
- 1:10:18my quotes. But in the house at the end where they like she like
- 1:10:21reads the mail of whoever's actual house it is, and she's like, I'm
- 1:10:25gonna go upstairs and slip into something a little more ruth and feeling ruthless.
- 1:10:29And it's kind of thrown away because he like starts talking over yah. Yeah,
- 1:10:36but yeah, that's a good shout. I thought it was funny that
- 1:10:41the idea for this film was brought to Michel Gondrie by his friend who just
- 1:10:46suggested, you get a card in the mail that says someone you know has
- 1:10:49just erased you from their memory. And that's where like the whole idea stemmed
- 1:10:54from. So it's like, that's really neat, really neat. Let's see,
- 1:10:59oh, the the speaking of improvising. When Kate punches Jim Carrey during
- 1:11:04the train scene that was not stage door planned, and so his response is
- 1:11:10genuine surprise I thought that came and she hits him hard. It's almost like
- 1:11:15like she hurried, like she was trying to be like, no, I
- 1:11:18should just do it, you know, Like it's really funny. I liked
- 1:11:21it. Let's see, we got the music thing. When they're talking,
- 1:11:28the music only goes when they're talking. That was like a very conscious choice
- 1:11:31and I thought that was cool. Yeah, I love that, uh,
- 1:11:38we said, the one where he's standing up the practical effects. I always
- 1:11:43thought that was so cool. Yeah, that's such a wild I did not
- 1:11:45know about that DVD like scenes thing. I'd love to see that, like
- 1:11:53the the footage of him, like because one shots are so fun anyway,
- 1:11:58like doing stuff like that, that's really neat. Virtually all of the most
- 1:12:01bizarre and fascinating scenes in the movie were created with old fashioned camera editing,
- 1:12:06lighting, and prop and set tricks. Like we said, the use of
- 1:12:11digital effects were very limited. The striking kitchen scene with Joel as a child
- 1:12:15was created with an elaborate force perspective setup, similar to what Peter Jackson used
- 1:12:20in Lord of the Rings trilogy. I just thought that was cool too,
- 1:12:24to know that that's how they got him to look so tiny in the table
- 1:12:27big and all that good stuff. So that's neat nice, and it mentioned
- 1:12:30Lord of the Rings. Let's be honest. The scene where Joel and Clementine
- 1:12:34watched the circus go through the streets was made up on the spot, as
- 1:12:39the film crew and cast happened to be working nearby, and the director decided
- 1:12:44it would work well in the film. So the part where Clementine disappears suddenly
- 1:12:47is one of Gondry's favorite moments in the film, and Jim Carey didn't know
- 1:12:54that she was going to disappear like that, and he liked it because because
- 1:13:00Jim Carrey's face gets so sad, but the sound cuts out because he's actually
- 1:13:04saying Kate in it, He's like, Kate, what happened? Which I
- 1:13:09think is really neat. Yeah, that's really cool. When Rob, I
- 1:13:15know you loved this part when Mark Ruffalo scares Kirsten Dunst, Yeah, he
- 1:13:20asked. The director asked Ruffalo to hide in a different spot each each take,
- 1:13:26so then it was still a surprise. It's pretty great, which worked
- 1:13:30out. I think he really did scare the crap out of her. So
- 1:13:32you did a good job. Let's see. I love a jump scares so
- 1:13:38much. Oh, this is messed up. When Jim Carrey first met Michelle
- 1:13:43Gondry about starring in the film, Carrie was suffering from a depressive episode and
- 1:13:48over lunch he told the director told Carrie, you're so beautiful right now,
- 1:13:54you're so broken. Please don't get well, and recounting the story a decade
- 1:14:00later, Carrie would remark, that's how this business is, and that,
- 1:14:04yeah, tracks, that's messed up, dude, Like, I hate that.
- 1:14:10I guess at least something beautiful came out of it. Yeah, I
- 1:14:15guess. I don't know. That's pretty problem. Yeah, just like please
- 1:14:19don't get better, Come on, man, come h Yeah, I guess.
- 1:14:27At least one version of the screenplay ends with Clementine and Joel in an
- 1:14:30endless cycle of erasures and getting back together. In the last scene of this
- 1:14:35version, and elderly Clementine sits with the doctor, and the screenplay calls for
- 1:14:42the audience to see a computer screen showing at least fifteen dates of previous erasers
- 1:14:46stretching back some fifty years, all of them involving Joel Barrish. The actual
- 1:14:53ending in the movie ends on a much more upbeat note. I'm glad they
- 1:14:57say that that's a depressing would be to my that's too much, Like that's
- 1:15:02yeah. It's kind of surprising though, because Charlie Kaufman really goes I mean,
- 1:15:09I can definitely see that he goes for the jugular. It seems,
- 1:15:12you know, Yeah, he doesn't usually care if it doesn't end with a
- 1:15:15happy ending. Sure right, yeah, but that that was the ending of
- 1:15:20the trivia that I had. I saw a couple of other things. I
- 1:15:23saw that there was another subplot that involved Joel having a one night stand with
- 1:15:29his ex girlfriend who they mentioned Naomi, and Naomi was Ellen Pompeo. Why
- 1:15:35she was deleted from the final cut. I have a hard time imagining how
- 1:15:42that would have worked storyline wise, like plot wise, Yeah, it feels
- 1:15:46like it would have come out of left fields. I'm kind of glad they
- 1:15:48deleted that, but yeah, sure, but a bummer for Ellen Pompeo because,
- 1:15:54yeah, I feel like the first time I saw her was old school.
- 1:15:57I don't know. Yeah, when I saw that, they did a
- 1:16:00fun thing and I always love when films do this. But to help promote
- 1:16:02the movie, a fully functional website was created for Lacuna, saying that it
- 1:16:09would provide memory erasure and all that and there's a link to the movie and
- 1:16:13all that stuff. I love that. As of twenty twenty four, this
- 1:16:15is the most recent film to win a Screenwriting Oscar without being nominated for Best
- 1:16:20Picture, which is pretty wild. That is pretty crazy. Yeah, why
- 1:16:26wasn't it nominated? Yeah, check it out. I don't know the gang.
- 1:16:30I was gonna say two thousand and four, right, yep? Oh
- 1:16:32four, yeah, yep, and makes Yeah, I don't know. Would
- 1:16:39that be the five oscars or is it four? I don't know how that
- 1:16:41works the five. I think just make sure Kate Winslet is up for Best
- 1:16:46Leading or you know, the screenplay whatever. A couple other things before Jim
- 1:16:53Carey expressed interest in playing Joel, Nicholas Cage was considered for the role.
- 1:16:58Who I think that would have been a very different tone in this movie if
- 1:17:01it was, for sure, it would be a lot more like dream scenario.
- 1:17:05If you've seen that, which was so crazy. Yeah, it was
- 1:17:11wild. I saw Seth Rogan auditioned for the role of Patrick. Wow,
- 1:17:16Okay, he could have done it. And apparently Denzel turned down the role
- 1:17:23of Joel. That's interesting, which can't really see that now, Like,
- 1:17:30Denzel is an incredible actor, and I'm sure he would have been incredible in
- 1:17:32it, but it's really hard to picture that. Yeah, I don't.
- 1:17:40I don't know if he could hit the the melancholy notes quite the same way.
- 1:17:44Yeah, he didn't have enough genuine depression to pull it off. I
- 1:17:46think, right, why can't I don't. They just won't show me the
- 1:17:54list. I don't know, I'm having a bad time. Hey, it's
- 1:17:59all good. We don't need to worry about Go go google it yourself.
- 1:18:01I don't know what. Did you have any trivia? You didn't need to
- 1:18:06get any. But did you have anything that you've learned? Neil? No,
- 1:18:10not particularly. I mean there was the whole Lacuna translation, which I
- 1:18:14thought was obviously a little fun Easter egg kind of apt for for that whole
- 1:18:17thing, But that's kind of about it. Most of it, of course,
- 1:18:20was practical effects stuff we've already talked about. I didn't really have anything
- 1:18:24outside of that cool well Judgment Day. Will there be a sequel? No,
- 1:18:30it'd be hilarious if the sequel was just the same movie, the same
- 1:18:35movie, maybe shot from like from her perspective, you know, we see
- 1:18:40her side of the story. That'd be interesting. That is interesting. I
- 1:18:44like that. I like that. Or we see them, you know,
- 1:18:46when they're I guess fifty years later in doing the erasures over and over and
- 1:18:51over. But yeah, I don't like that wouldn't be fun. It would
- 1:18:56not be fun. I don't like that there ending I think I think frolicking
- 1:19:00on the beach is good enough for me. It is. It's way more
- 1:19:03positive and uplifting, and I'm up for that. I have the Oscars.
- 1:19:08If we want to talk about let's talk about it. A million Dollar Baby
- 1:19:13won that year. Combinations Finding never Land, Million Dollar Baby, Ray,
- 1:19:17Sideways, and the Avia Tour. Those are all good. We're all pretty
- 1:19:23solid, are good. Aviator was really good. All those were good.
- 1:19:27Yeah, and she lost to Hillary Swank. Million Dollar Baby makes sense.
- 1:19:31Maybe Sideway, I mean, Sideways had some really great dialogue and good acting
- 1:19:36performances. But like the more impressive film, I think I agree with that.
- 1:19:44Yeah, I think this one, I mean on originality alone, you
- 1:19:47know, like the whole concept of this film and the execution of it was
- 1:19:50so unlike any other movie that I can think, Yeah, right, that
- 1:19:56is kind of weird. It wasn't up now if it was doing the the
- 1:20:00ten picture formula, which we've done for the last few years with the Oscars,
- 1:20:03if for sure, Yeah, this is only five, which is crazy.
- 1:20:08Yeah cool. Well thanks for looking that up, buddy. Yeah,
- 1:20:13would you guys like to play a game? I decided to do another Malkovich
- 1:20:18Malkovich Malkovich and this Neil is, I'm going to say a quote from a
- 1:20:25film. If you know the answer, you ring in with your name,
- 1:20:28and you tell me three different things. You'll tell me the name of the
- 1:20:31film, the actor who said it, and the character's name. You can
- 1:20:35get up to three points for each quote. If you ring it and get
- 1:20:41it wrong. There are no negative points, but the other person can come
- 1:20:45in and steal any of the things you get wrong. All these films have
- 1:20:49something in common. When you know the theme, you can ring it at
- 1:20:53any time for a point. They might have something to do with Eternal Sunshine
- 1:20:58of the Spotless Mind. Are you guys ready? Yes? All right?
- 1:21:04Number one the Man Punted Baxter. I'm giving it to Neil Damn Anchorman Anchorman,
- 1:21:17Yes, can you do the full title of Anchorman Anchorman, the Legend
- 1:21:21of ron Burgundy. He's got three points? All right? So much bad
- 1:21:30man do run? I wanted to do a quote from that movie. I
- 1:21:36was just like, I gotta go for a deep cut. Let's go for
- 1:21:40a deep love it, love it all right, Let's go to number two.
- 1:21:45This might be tougher. We'll see. I keep telling you, you
- 1:21:50listen to me more, you live longer. I keep telling you, you
- 1:22:00listen to me more, you live longer. There's no negative points. Fives
- 1:22:09four bukes. Now I can't be that. We just did it, uh,
- 1:22:13Edge of Tomorrow. It sounds like a movie like that. Oh it
- 1:22:15does sound like that. It is not that. Yeah, five four do
- 1:22:23you have? I guess neil, I got nothing to one. This,
- 1:22:26of course, was Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom. Short round.
- 1:22:30Wo okay, ye, let's go to number three. I'm French. Why
- 1:22:43do you think I have this outrageous accent? To you, silly king?
- 1:22:50These are hard soon he says it with an accent, very a very big
- 1:22:59accent. Why do you think I have this outrageous accent, you silly king?
- 1:23:06Yes, it's gotta be Mony Python. I'm gonna say, hold on,
- 1:23:15you gotta do the whole title. Yeah. Yeah, that's why I
- 1:23:17was trying to pick which Money Holy Grail it is mon Python and the Holy
- 1:23:24Grail. Yeah. I don't know the character or the actor though. Okay,
- 1:23:31do you know something it is not? Eric Idol? No, okay,
- 1:23:35yeah, that's hard. Do you know Money Python and the Holy Grail.
- 1:23:39Neil not well enough? Okay, it was John Cleese, clease.
- 1:23:45Yeah, he's doing the French soldier, just French soldiers, A tough one.
- 1:23:51I love that. So you got you got one point. You got
- 1:23:59that point, honestly done. I think you guys are gonna get number four.
- 1:24:02I had to put in some easy ones and some tough ones. So
- 1:24:05here's number four. You'll definitely get this. You shall not pass, Bukes,
- 1:24:15Lord of the Rings. I appreciate the attempt. Shall shall not pass.
- 1:24:24It's Gandalf the Gray at that juncture. Uh and Ian God, I
- 1:24:30can't I can't think of his last name? Whoa You still have not gotten
- 1:24:34a point for the title of the movie. By the way, Oh,
- 1:24:38I'm sorry, Lord of the Rings. Uh that's Fellowship of the Ring.
- 1:24:42Fellowship of the Ring. Yep. And you could have been tricky because he
- 1:24:45says that in the second one too. Yeah. No, that been funny.
- 1:24:53Uh. Ian, Why can't think of his name? I have three?
- 1:24:59No, that's not it, Neil, who is it? Ian McKellen
- 1:25:04McKellen. Neil gets one, you get two? M all right, James.
- 1:25:13Number five. This we'll see, we'll see how we do. Number
- 1:25:17five. No, I'm a stunt man. It's not a great quote,
- 1:25:23but it is a quote. No, I'm a stunt man, Neil,
- 1:25:29Neil fall guy. No, but very good. Guess bus Bugs Once upon
- 1:25:35a Time in Hollywood? Got it nice? Those are the two stunt man
- 1:25:40movies. Yeah, pretty much, pretty much. Brad Pitt, Brad Pitt.
- 1:25:45I don't I don't remember what his name is. Yeah, you'd have
- 1:25:50to. I don't know. I don't know. Yeah, do you know
- 1:25:54me? Oh man, I don't think I can. Well, he says
- 1:25:59it, but I don't know. Yeah, he says it a bunch.
- 1:26:03I don't think I have it. I've only seen that movie once, the
- 1:26:06same I got to rewatch it. His name was Cliff Booth, Cliff Booth,
- 1:26:14and Leo's name was Dalton something, Dalton breaking, Dalton. I remember.
- 1:26:24So that was five? What are we halfway through? I have five?
- 1:26:28Neil has four? This is it? I don't know what. Oh
- 1:26:33wait, so the movies that start with a vowel, right it is not?
- 1:26:42Nope, so we so far we have anchormand the Legend of ron Burgundy,
- 1:26:45Indiana, Jones and the Temple Doom, Money Python in the Holy Grail,
- 1:26:49The Lord of the Rings, Fellowship of the Ring, and Once upon
- 1:26:53a Time in Hollywood? Is it movies with long titles? It absolutely is
- 1:26:59a point. Nice. They have at least five words in the title.
- 1:27:03Nice. So there you go. Number six, What are you waiting for?
- 1:27:19And now I'll say it how she says it? Please do? What
- 1:27:23are you waiting for? And there's a twirl around and it's an overhead shot
- 1:27:30and she's screaming and what is that from? I can hear it in my
- 1:27:34brain for what are you waiting? She's being chased by something bugs bus No,
- 1:27:43I don't have it. You're just giving yourself time. Uh. You
- 1:27:51guys must not have watched I know what you did last summer. Man,
- 1:27:57that's a deep cut. You said it's raining, right, I think,
- 1:28:01So, my god, you're disappointed with me for not getting that one.
- 1:28:05I think, Yeah, what are you waiting for? That's so great?
- 1:28:13It was like the only memorable quote from that movie. All right, let's
- 1:28:17go to number seven. This is also a tough one. I live for
- 1:28:21the People because I love the people. Oh my god, I know that
- 1:28:27one too, but what is it? I live for the people because I
- 1:28:33love the people? Five four three two the Fred Hampton. It is the
- 1:28:46Fred Hampton movie. Is the reason I picked it is because Neil was on
- 1:28:53for that. That was Judas in the Blacks, and it was Daniel you
- 1:29:00were into my head. Wait for a second, but I actually remember it.
- 1:29:04Just kidding that was not guessing that, but I did think it was
- 1:29:09maybe from that. Okay, damn it. I should have been more emphatic.
- 1:29:14Mm okay, let's go to number eight. I think you will get
- 1:29:16this one. Bread makes you fat, pukess makes you fat. It's a
- 1:29:28it's uh Michael Sarah. Yes, Oh sorry, I should say that Scott
- 1:29:32Pilgrim versus the world. Yes, and his name is Scott Pilgrim. Boom,
- 1:29:36you got three pints makes you fat? That line is so dumb,
- 1:29:45so much. I love that that line comes in like a montage of the
- 1:29:50date and it's just like a five second clip of that conversation and then it
- 1:29:55cuts forward again. I love it, so h All right, let's go
- 1:30:00to number nine. Let's see how you doing this one. If you want
- 1:30:04to know what a man's like, take a good look at how he treats
- 1:30:08his inferiors, not his equals. If you want to know what a man's
- 1:30:15like, take a good look at how he treats his inferiors, not his
- 1:30:19equals. I know I know this one too. Four. There's just no
- 1:30:26other clues to there are, Pep. It is kind of tough. No
- 1:30:31guesses, Wolf of Wall Street. Nope, yeah, nope, Neil,
- 1:30:36no guests. I don't know. No, that's not r gonna about for
- 1:30:41me. This was from Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. This was
- 1:30:45a serious black damn played by Gary Oldman. Wow, he we're gonna hear
- 1:30:51about that one. Yeah. I was not close on that one, clearly.
- 1:30:56It's like, I know I've heard this before. We only have one
- 1:31:00left you guys, where are we at? Point? Wise? I have
- 1:31:02eight, Neil has five for me. Yeah, all of us kind of
- 1:31:11so, I will say I've never seen number ten. But I did say
- 1:31:15that this was a big quick quote from him. Okay, I asked you
- 1:31:21to give me a refreshing drink. I wasn't expecting a rainforest. You could
- 1:31:26fall in love with an orangutang in that? God? What is that?
- 1:31:34Oh? I asked you to give me a refreshing drink. I wasn't expecting
- 1:31:39the rainforest you can fall in love with an orangutang in that that's my best.
- 1:31:45That's it good? That's good. I don't know who it is,
- 1:31:48but it's good. But it's good. Is it? Jason? Pretty an
- 1:31:57impressions. I liked that, Jesus. I don't know what movie that's from
- 1:32:01though, Yeah, only one I can think of is Verish. It's a
- 1:32:05long title, long title, Jason Statham, long title. That's not the
- 1:32:14big air one, is it for? No's not a fast and furious to
- 1:32:19know. I should have done one for you. Oh so this was from
- 1:32:27Lockstock and Two Smoking Bears. Good, damn it? Okay, that's a
- 1:32:30good Yea. That's another movie that I need to rewatch. I love that
- 1:32:32movie. It's just been a long time. I thought you guys both liked
- 1:32:35it. That's why I picked it. But I still haven't seen it,
- 1:32:40and I have to because I've been on a guy Richie kick and I love
- 1:32:43his damn it definitely should. Yeah, it's a good one. But you
- 1:32:45got called. That's a good pull, man. That's a good pull.
- 1:32:50The bonus was stop or my mom will shoot? Fantastic. I love but
- 1:33:01it's nicely done. Buddy. You'll tell us how we do our top five
- 1:33:05characters with unnaturally dyed hair amazing A fight for the Ages. I kep waiting
- 1:33:13for you just because I know the whole title. I was waiting for too
- 1:33:15long. Foo. Thanks for everything, Julie new I don't know any quote,
- 1:33:19so I was like, I actually probably won't even get it. That
- 1:33:24would have been good man. Yeah, I didn't even think the long titles.
- 1:33:28You know, it's interesting, wrinkle, because it's another step you can
- 1:33:30trip up on just getting some words wrong and a long title, you know
- 1:33:34for sure. Yeah. I tried to make you know the big anthology ones
- 1:33:41where it could only be from that movie. Yeah, you called me out
- 1:33:44on the ushell and that pass was on the side. You would have been
- 1:33:47like, yeah, the other one. Yeah, I didn't think about that
