Speaker 3: Republican delegate from the fifty fifth Delicate, Jbacres. How you doing,
1:56
Speaker 3: my friend, I'm doing great, man, Bobs. He's not just
1:58
Speaker 3: going to stop by, He's actually in this.
2:00
Speaker 5: Yeah right now. I fell out of pressure with Bob Washington.
2:02
Speaker 3: You can't keep an old broadcasting guy out of a studio.
2:05
Speaker 3: Most people wait in the green room. I look up
2:07
Speaker 3: and Brunner's just walking right in here. That's fine. I
2:09
Speaker 3: told him he's welcome to stays Bob Brunner. He can
2:12
Speaker 3: do what he wants.
2:12
Speaker 5: I could use my TV voice with Bob and there,
2:14
Speaker 5: Good Morning, West Virginia. It's great to be here.
2:17
Speaker 3: You got to do that classic, the old top forty voice.
2:21
Speaker 3: You know, you got to get it good morning. So
2:23
Speaker 3: you got it, you got it, you got it. You're
2:25
Speaker 3: the best dressed guest I've had on the show in
2:27
Speaker 3: a while. I'll say that.
2:28
Speaker 5: Well, I mean, I wor a suit, even though there's
2:29
Speaker 5: no video on your show in the morning's all Wars
2:31
Speaker 5: suit just for you, man. I am not a suit
2:33
Speaker 5: and tigery. I'm totally a jeans and T shirt guy.
2:35
Speaker 5: If I have my choice, I know.
2:36
Speaker 3: And so I will start by just a little bit
2:40
Speaker 3: talking about the tvt last night, and then when I
2:42
Speaker 3: go to turn into a sports secment, but I mean,
2:44
Speaker 3: it's what a great event for Charleston. I mean, because
2:47
Speaker 3: you know they won last night, and now the next
2:49
Speaker 3: game is going to be in Charleston Monday. The next
2:51
Speaker 3: Monday night at College. You could match the center.
2:53
Speaker 5: That's awesome, man. And it's like, is it a million
2:55
Speaker 5: dollar person if you win the whole thing? Which is great?
2:57
Speaker 5: So that that was an exciting win last night. It
3:00
Speaker 5: was so yeah, good for those guys. I hope they
3:02
Speaker 5: win the whole thing. That would be fantastic.
3:03
Speaker 3: Seventy nine sixty eight was the final score over Elite Nation,
3:07
Speaker 3: and now they'll advance to take on the next And
3:10
Speaker 3: I love these team names Shocked, shell Shocked. They're the
3:13
Speaker 3: you know, the the offshoot of the of the Terrapins
3:16
Speaker 3: of Maryland. You see what they did there? Yes, shell Shock.
3:19
Speaker 5: Yeah, we talked about Maryland. I saw a flashbacks to
3:21
Speaker 5: the role coach Garry Williams used to sweat through his
3:24
Speaker 5: suit jacket on the sidelines during the games. That's what
3:27
Speaker 5: I remember about Maryland the most.
3:28
Speaker 3: So you ever do that in court?
3:30
Speaker 5: I have not yet, Buddy. If I do, you'll know
3:31
Speaker 5: that I'm losing. What about under the Capitol though, that's
3:34
Speaker 5: probably happened a couple of times.
3:36
Speaker 3: Yeah, So appreciate you stopping by the studio. I had
3:40
Speaker 3: risinally promoted that delegate to Dana Ferrell would be here.
3:42
Speaker 3: I talked to Dana last night. I text him because
3:44
Speaker 3: I talked to him on Monday and he said, yeah,
3:47
Speaker 3: he said, pencil me in on Wednesday and I said,
3:49
Speaker 3: I'll check with you. So yesterday afternoon, late afternoon, early evening,
3:52
Speaker 3: I text him and he called me and he sounded
3:54
Speaker 3: a little bit like Bonnie Tyler doing total Eclipse of
3:57
Speaker 3: the heart. He was like, well, Dave, I don't think
3:59
Speaker 3: I'm going to be able to make it.
4:00
Speaker 5: So yeah, he called me a sign a little rough.
4:02
Speaker 5: So if he's feeling better, I'm like the JV today,
4:04
Speaker 5: I'm yeah, JB.
4:06
Speaker 3: The JVS, right is what what's on your mind today?
4:08
Speaker 3: Let's uh, let's start with p I A. Let's let's
4:10
Speaker 3: just dive right yet.
4:11
Speaker 5: Yeah, let's talk about something non controversial. We can talk
4:14
Speaker 5: about religion after that. I guess. So, uh, we're speaking
4:17
Speaker 5: religion in a sort of a weird way. You and
4:20
Speaker 5: I are texting about what we're going to discuss today
4:21
Speaker 5: and rest in peace Ozzy Osbourne. You were like, he's
4:24
Speaker 5: still dead, and I said, we're not sure, Dave. He's
4:26
Speaker 5: a prince of darkness, so who knows what's going on?
4:28
Speaker 5: That's true, Yeah, But when it comes to p I A, uh,
4:31
Speaker 5: that that is something I know that some people probably
4:33
Speaker 5: would like that discussion uh to be dead, because there's
4:36
Speaker 5: really when you look at it, just being realistic, there
4:39
Speaker 5: will be no solution that we come up with that
4:42
Speaker 5: is going to make everybody happy. Unfortunately, we know that's true.
4:46
Speaker 3: Uh.
4:46
Speaker 5: You know, all the things that are on the table,
4:48
Speaker 5: you know from the Governor's office so far that we've
4:50
Speaker 5: heard as an example, uh, you know, they're they're going
4:53
Speaker 5: to result in restrictions of some type, either restrictions and
4:56
Speaker 5: benefits or restricting the members who are on p I A.
4:58
Speaker 5: This is not a discussion having where we're going to
5:00
Speaker 5: expand it. And you know, unfortunately PI in the past,
5:05
Speaker 5: it's like a lot of government programs, and it absolutely
5:09
Speaker 5: serves a good purpose, like we need PIA for our
5:11
Speaker 5: state employees. Some people I've heard them say, we just
5:14
Speaker 5: need to get out of this business and drop PI totally.
5:16
Speaker 5: But one thing you've got to remember is that under
5:18
Speaker 5: a federal law, state of West Virginia is an employer.
5:21
Speaker 5: We've got to either provide the health insurance or provide
5:24
Speaker 5: some funding for health insurance for state employees. And what
5:28
Speaker 5: we've heard from the Governor's office and I believe this
5:30
Speaker 5: to be true, is if we did get rid of
5:32
Speaker 5: P E I A, then the benefit we would have
5:34
Speaker 5: to provide our employees and the open marketplace would actually
5:37
Speaker 5: be more expensive than the substity we provide. So I think,
5:40
Speaker 5: you know, financially, PI is something that we need to
5:42
Speaker 5: keep in place. Need to keep it in place for
5:44
Speaker 5: our state employees who do deserve it. I know some
5:46
Speaker 5: other folks run at the county level and some nonprofits,
5:49
Speaker 5: and you've had some guests. We've talked about whether or
5:52
Speaker 5: not those other folks other than the state employees should
5:54
Speaker 5: be on PA. I don't know if that discussion will
5:57
Speaker 5: go forward in a serious manner, but I know it's
5:59
Speaker 5: at least something that's sort of on the table. So
6:03
Speaker 5: it is. It's something that we'll probably see in a
6:05
Speaker 5: special session. I don't know when I'm gonna ask you.
6:08
Speaker 3: Are we hearing anything about special session?
6:09
Speaker 5: I hear I've heard some different things. You know, we
6:11
Speaker 5: initially heard maybe July. You know, we're so deep into
6:14
Speaker 5: July now. I don't think it's going to happen. I
6:16
Speaker 5: don't think it'll be August. Can't promise you that. So
6:18
Speaker 5: if if you make me guess, I guess we might
6:20
Speaker 5: see something in September. But we need to have a
6:23
Speaker 5: plan in place. You can't just call the legislature in
6:25
Speaker 5: and say figure this out when we get there, Like,
6:27
Speaker 5: we need at least some working plan in place, that
6:29
Speaker 5: we have a framework that we start from. And I'll
6:32
Speaker 5: say this too the governor. Well, the p i i
6:35
Speaker 5: A Board, which is you know, generally linked to the
6:38
Speaker 5: executive branch. Is how we view that the pei A
6:41
Speaker 5: Board can make some of the changes we've heard about
6:44
Speaker 5: on their own. They don't need legislative action on some
6:46
Speaker 5: of these things. Some other things like we've heard about
6:49
Speaker 5: a fraud unit potentially that might be introduced to try
6:51
Speaker 5: to control some of the costs in PAF. That's something
6:54
Speaker 5: that would probably require some legislative action, but that's not
6:57
Speaker 5: a huge piece of the puzzle. What we've heard is,
6:59
Speaker 5: you know, maybe that'll say this a million bucks a year,
7:02
Speaker 5: which is great, that's a lot of money, but that's
7:03
Speaker 5: a drop in the bucket for the cost of PA.
7:05
Speaker 5: So you know, anyway, long story short, it's gotta be
7:09
Speaker 5: something to gets to addressed. We cannot keep kicking the
7:11
Speaker 5: can down the road. I do think in the past
7:13
Speaker 5: PEIA was expanded beyond its initial purpose. It'd be great
7:17
Speaker 5: if we could afford it. But I think it went
7:19
Speaker 5: beyond what it was initially planned for, which is state employees,
7:22
Speaker 5: primarily teachers, I would point to them mostly. Uh, And
7:25
Speaker 5: now we've created a situation where it's at risk because
7:29
Speaker 5: you know, I think some past you know, political bodies
7:32
Speaker 5: expanded it beyond what was initially for for different reasons,
7:35
Speaker 5: somewhat you know, probably sometimes for political reasons. And now
7:38
Speaker 5: we've got to take care of it.
7:39
Speaker 6: Well.
7:40
Speaker 3: And you know, one of the things about about state employees,
7:43
Speaker 3: whether it's a teacher and the other state employee, was
7:45
Speaker 3: years ago it was like, well, we don't pay you
7:48
Speaker 3: as much, but you got these great benefits, you know,
7:51
Speaker 3: and U and that was that was a draw, you know,
7:54
Speaker 3: Delegate as you know, that was a draw to get
7:55
Speaker 3: people to go into these into some of these fields.
7:58
Speaker 3: And if we don't have that as a draw, I mean,
8:01
Speaker 3: we got teacher openings all in every county in the
8:04
Speaker 3: city of West Virginia right now.
8:06
Speaker 5: Well, and there's also a matter of fundamental fairness, which
8:08
Speaker 5: I'm also very sympathetic to, is you know, do you
8:10
Speaker 5: start change making employees change horses mid stream? I mean,
8:13
Speaker 5: if they have a current benefit, you need to do
8:17
Speaker 5: everything you can within your power. That's reasonable. You can't
8:19
Speaker 5: bankrupt the system, but you know everything within your power
8:22
Speaker 5: to make sure that the people who have a benefit
8:24
Speaker 5: that they and their families rely upon, that they have
8:26
Speaker 5: a stable and consistent benefit that they they can rely
8:29
Speaker 5: upon from you to year. There's nothing more important to
8:31
Speaker 5: a family. I mean, the paycheck is more important, but
8:34
Speaker 5: very close second is your health insurance benefits. Obviously, for
8:36
Speaker 5: some families it probably is the most important benefit if
8:39
Speaker 5: they have people who have very serious health care needs.
8:42
Speaker 3: And again, you could go back I've only been doing
8:44
Speaker 3: this show for five years, but you could go back
8:46
Speaker 3: to any talk line or anything like that ten years ago,
8:49
Speaker 3: fifteen years ago, twenty over and over. Yet they were
8:51
Speaker 3: talking about PEI and I'm hoping that we don't have
8:55
Speaker 3: in another fifteen or twenty years, when somebody else is
8:57
Speaker 3: sitting in this chair, that we don't We're not saying, well, well,
9:00
Speaker 3: all right, what are we gonna do about PA, because,
9:02
Speaker 3: as you said, it's been kicked down the road so
9:04
Speaker 3: many times.
9:05
Speaker 5: Yeah so, but you know, in big picture, one of
9:07
Speaker 5: the ways that we help solve the PEA challenge or
9:11
Speaker 5: really any challenge in the state is improving the economy
9:14
Speaker 5: of the state. So I can tell you in the
9:15
Speaker 5: off season, if you say there's an off season the
9:18
Speaker 5: legislature right now, we you know, I guess different legislators
9:21
Speaker 5: do different amounts of work. I mean, it really is
9:23
Speaker 5: a year round job. I was at a community meeting
9:25
Speaker 5: two nights ago. I was in a conference called Monday
9:28
Speaker 5: with some folks about economic development. And so during the
9:30
Speaker 5: off season I spent as much time as I can
9:33
Speaker 5: on economic development issues because the more people who have
9:36
Speaker 5: good paying jobs, you know, the more taxes they pay
9:39
Speaker 5: into the system because they have a good paying job.
9:41
Speaker 5: The more you can, you know, contribute to your school system,
9:43
Speaker 5: your roads, you can contribute to solving pea challenges and
9:46
Speaker 5: other things. So my big picture hope is that we
9:49
Speaker 5: improve the economy of the state as best we can
9:51
Speaker 5: and get as many people working here, living here, and
9:53
Speaker 5: moving into West Virginia, which we do have I've said
9:56
Speaker 5: this before positive news the past a couple of years.
9:58
Speaker 5: We do have net positive migration into West Virginia for
10:00
Speaker 5: the first time in decades. So you know, it's not
10:03
Speaker 5: accelerating as quickly as impatient people like me would like
10:06
Speaker 5: to see. But you know, I will say I do
10:08
Speaker 5: think that there are positives that we see out there
10:10
Speaker 5: if we look in the great place.
10:11
Speaker 3: Can you are you at liberty to discuss any of
10:13
Speaker 3: the economic development stuff? I mean, and we don't want to,
10:15
Speaker 3: you know, ruin it, but I mean, what are you
10:17
Speaker 3: looking at? You and others? What are you looking at?
10:18
Speaker 5: Well, els, I can tell you broadly. The call I
10:21
Speaker 5: had a couple of days ago revolved around the energy sector,
10:23
Speaker 5: specifically power generation. You know, there are some states that
10:28
Speaker 5: really know we're short on time. I wish I had
10:30
Speaker 5: more time to discuss this. But some states are adverse
10:33
Speaker 5: to energy generation. They don't want more energy capacity or
10:36
Speaker 5: generation or state despite the fact that energy needs are
10:39
Speaker 5: exponentially increasing in this country. You've had people on here
10:42
Speaker 5: talking about data centers, for example, hyperscalers. The energy needs
10:46
Speaker 5: in this country are going to exponentially increase, you know,
10:49
Speaker 5: over the next several years. So we need more energy
10:52
Speaker 5: generating capacity. And there's some states who don't want it.
10:55
Speaker 5: And so the message that many of us are trying
10:57
Speaker 5: to send is, hey, we do want more energy generating
10:59
Speaker 5: capacity city in West Virginia. It'll help you know, decrease
11:02
Speaker 5: the amount that our rate payers currently pay the more
11:04
Speaker 5: you put on the grid here in West Virginia, and
11:06
Speaker 5: it creates jobs. I mean these if you get a
11:08
Speaker 5: large energy generating capacity facility that provides decades worth of
11:12
Speaker 5: revenue and decades worth of jobs, these are you know,
11:14
Speaker 5: multi billion dollar projects if they if they locate here.
11:17
Speaker 5: So that's one of them. We also recently in June
11:20
Speaker 5: was you know, met some people on some aerospace you know,
11:23
Speaker 5: economic development proposals. A lot of folks don't realize this,
11:27
Speaker 5: but the aerospace industry is one of the fastest growing
11:30
Speaker 5: market sectors in West Virginia. I know we talk sometimes
11:32
Speaker 5: about the more traditional jobs in the state, which we
11:34
Speaker 5: need to also grow and protect, but aerospace is one
11:37
Speaker 5: of the high tech industries that West Virginia really we
11:40
Speaker 5: do have a place on the map for that now.
11:41
Speaker 5: So that's something else that we're trying to focus on.
11:43
Speaker 3: You know, we're talking with the Delegate to jb Acres,
11:47
Speaker 3: and one of the things that I think that I
11:50
Speaker 3: have I've had conversations with Delegate to Dana Ferrell about
11:53
Speaker 3: has been tourism. And when we think about tourism, we
11:56
Speaker 3: don't always think about Kanawa County. I mean, let's be honest,
11:58
Speaker 3: so many people think about the Snowshoe area. They think
12:01
Speaker 3: about some of these areas. There's a lot of exciting
12:03
Speaker 3: things going on in that realm in kanaw County. I
12:06
Speaker 3: mean we've seen the expansion of the half of the
12:07
Speaker 3: McCoy Trail we had along with the Kanawh County commission
12:12
Speaker 3: doing work on the park in Tornado and things of
12:15
Speaker 3: that nature. I mean, there's a lot of good things
12:16
Speaker 3: here in Kanawha County going on as far as tourism goes.
12:19
Speaker 5: Yeah, I was actually in Tornado two nights ago and
12:21
Speaker 5: that half film on Corey Trail in the park, I
12:23
Speaker 5: went by both of those. Commissioner A. Lance Wheeler's done
12:25
Speaker 5: a great job on those issues. That's an area he's
12:27
Speaker 5: focused on. And I'll tell you, Delegate Faruh he just
12:30
Speaker 5: mentioned there's probably no one who's a better advocate for
12:32
Speaker 5: Kanall County than him. He really does focus on local
12:35
Speaker 5: tourism issues as well as anybody does. I'll give him
12:37
Speaker 5: credit for that. And I'll tell you this as well.
12:40
Speaker 5: When we met with some folks on aerospace back in June.
12:43
Speaker 5: This ties back in one of the things we talked
12:45
Speaker 5: about when we did a look back on that meeting,
12:47
Speaker 5: and we said, we need to start including our tourism
12:49
Speaker 5: people when we go out and meet with some of
12:52
Speaker 5: these companies. If we're going to like a symposium or
12:54
Speaker 5: you know, a place where there's like a conference and
12:56
Speaker 5: a lot of potential employers, we start taking tourism with
13:00
Speaker 5: us and highlighting tourism is another reason to locate companies
13:04
Speaker 5: or businesses in West Virginia, because it is true, you know,
13:06
Speaker 5: tourism is certainly a part of our portfolio. You can
13:10
Speaker 5: highlight the quality of life in this state, and we
13:11
Speaker 5: have a lot of things to offer the people who
13:13
Speaker 5: we hope to come who will come here and work.
13:15
Speaker 5: So I agree with you. You know, that's just so.
13:17
Speaker 5: I think tourism you draw people in on a temporary basis,
13:20
Speaker 5: but I think you can also use it to sell
13:22
Speaker 5: permanent residence.
13:23
Speaker 3: Well, and that's what you know, with all these things
13:24
Speaker 3: that have gone on in Charleston, like the Regatta, like
13:27
Speaker 3: the TBT, like the USA Bike Championships that we're in town,
13:34
Speaker 3: a lot of these things are a selling point. You
13:36
Speaker 3: talked to folks at the CVB, They'll say, Hey, we
13:38
Speaker 3: want you to come here. We want you to, you know,
13:40
Speaker 3: take advantage of all these things. We'd like for you
13:42
Speaker 3: to consider maybe moving here at some point and getting
13:45
Speaker 3: some of these people that have moved away back to
13:47
Speaker 3: West Virginia. And I'm a big believer in Delia. The
13:49
Speaker 3: more activities you have, because people can only work so much.
13:53
Speaker 3: You know, you work eight thirty to five or whatever
13:55
Speaker 3: your hours are, you got to have other things that
13:59
Speaker 3: I mean, the jobs are right, but you got to
14:00
Speaker 3: have other things to kind of keep them there as well. Well.
14:02
Speaker 5: It's one of the quality of life things that I've
14:04
Speaker 5: talked about for years is you know, there's you know,
14:07
Speaker 5: quote unquote more stuff to do in New York City
14:10
Speaker 5: than Charleston, Westerns. I mean, we know that, but what's
14:13
Speaker 5: your quality of life in New York City If you
14:14
Speaker 5: have a regular job where it's taking an hour more
14:17
Speaker 5: to get to work, you're working, you know, nine to
14:20
Speaker 5: five at best, and it's taking an hour more to
14:21
Speaker 5: get home if you have kids, you know, or even
14:23
Speaker 5: getting to see him during the day, when do you
14:25
Speaker 5: see him in the evenings, and you're really spending most
14:27
Speaker 5: of your time just traveling and working. If you're in Charleston.
14:29
Speaker 5: I mean, Dave, I'm five minutes from my house. So
14:32
Speaker 5: the quality of life here, even though we may not
14:35
Speaker 5: have as many you know, you know again quote unquote
14:37
Speaker 5: things to do in the immediate area, the quality of
14:40
Speaker 5: life is so good that it should draw more people here,
14:43
Speaker 5: which then increases the amount of activities you do have.
14:45
Speaker 5: So I totally agree with you. I think quality of
14:46
Speaker 5: life has got to be one of our major selling points.
14:48
Speaker 3: That look, jb Acre's always a pleasure to have you

17:34
Speaker 10: Hey, do man to see the legendary You know, I'm
17:37
Speaker 10: just visiting the legends here. Well, I'm sure JV appreciates
17:42
Speaker 10: you saying that about it, you know, to I come
17:45
Speaker 10: to the studio and I think of the people that
17:47
Speaker 10: I used to come and visit with here back in
17:50
Speaker 10: the day, and and of course you among them. But
17:52
Speaker 10: my gosh, this there's a lot of history here in
17:55
Speaker 10: this building.
17:56
Speaker 3: I mean, this is only and I could be wrong.
17:58
Speaker 3: This only the second time I've had you on the show.
18:00
Speaker 3: We had you on when we talked about the anniversary
18:03
Speaker 3: of the Buffalo Creek flood, and Logan County had you
18:05
Speaker 3: and Speedy Bevans on the show before, but got to
18:09
Speaker 3: get you on here more. Man, They're going to give
18:10
Speaker 3: you something to do. What keeps you busy these days?
18:13
Speaker 3: Mostly I do a lot of volunteer work. I volunteer
18:16
Speaker 3: with the Bicycle Race. I do a lot of volunteer
18:21
Speaker 3: work with the festival folks and my big job as
18:25
Speaker 3: the chairman of the West Virginia Music Hall of Fame
18:28
Speaker 3: and trying to keep that boat alive, which is a
18:32
Speaker 3: nonprofit in the era where all of the major nonprofit
18:37
Speaker 3: funders are cutting back on funding. For example, we had
18:40
Speaker 3: our big show back in the end of April and
18:43
Speaker 3: the week of the show where we had, as you know,
18:47
Speaker 3: major country and other music performers coming in on their
18:51
Speaker 3: own nickel, thank god, from several places. We lost ten
18:55
Speaker 3: thousand dollars with funding. Yes, sorry, canceled goodbye and that
19:00
Speaker 3: kind of stuff. It keeps an old man busy. Hold
19:04
Speaker 3: are you bob? If you don't mind my ass, I
19:06
Speaker 3: will be eighty in two months, eighty in two months.
19:09
Speaker 3: To what do you contribute? Attribute not contribute to? What
19:12
Speaker 3: do you attribute the fact that you are at eighty
19:15
Speaker 3: years old? You're nearly eighty eighty years old, you look great,
19:17
Speaker 3: you sound great. What's the secret? Probably just too mean? Okay,
19:22
Speaker 3: too mean to die? Yeah? Okay, well, well Ozzie proved
19:25
Speaker 3: that yesterday that you don't have to be too mean
19:26
Speaker 3: to die. With all due respect to the Prince of Darkness.
19:30
Speaker 3: So First, we've spent a lot of time last couple
19:33
Speaker 3: of days, well yesterday on all the shows talking about
19:35
Speaker 3: Tom McGee. Tomgee, of course, passed away on Sunday, age
19:39
Speaker 3: of seventy eight. He was in hospice care. Decorated military veteran,
19:44
Speaker 3: you know, reinvented himself, you know, he was a television
19:48
Speaker 3: anchor person and then had had some issues well documented
19:53
Speaker 3: which he talked about. And then what the law school
19:55
Speaker 3: at age sixty? You what do you remember about Tom.
19:57
Speaker 10: G Well, actually our tended to diverge because for a
20:03
Speaker 10: brief period of time I took four years off of
20:06
Speaker 10: my journalism career and went to work for Gaston Caperton.
20:10
Speaker 10: And after I had finished working with Gaston, I was
20:14
Speaker 10: been doing his papers, his book which every governor has
20:18
Speaker 10: a book, and I got a call from Channel eight
20:21
Speaker 10: and they wanted to hire me as anchorman. I said,
20:23
Speaker 10: why do you want to hire me? You got Tom McGee.
20:25
Speaker 10: They said, his ratings suck and we're and we're dumping him.
20:29
Speaker 10: And so I told them that I needed a couple
20:32
Speaker 10: of months to finish the book and.
20:35
Speaker 3: That after that I would be available.
20:37
Speaker 10: And Tom did not have his contract renewed there and
20:42
Speaker 10: he was very upset about that. Later he went to
20:45
Speaker 10: work for Channel thirteen and we became competitors for a
20:48
Speaker 10: few years. I never really knew Tom personally, but I
20:53
Speaker 10: think Danny Jones accurately recounted yesterday that in those halcyon
20:57
Speaker 10: days of the mid and late eight he and uh
21:02
Speaker 10: he and Danny were quite the men about town and
21:05
Speaker 10: uh and uh and uh uh Tom, according to his
21:09
Speaker 10: co workers at Channel eight, most of them came to
21:13
Speaker 10: me after the fact and that Tom left and said,
21:16
Speaker 10: oh he he apparently cut cut quite a wide swath.
21:21
Speaker 3: Well, but I mean it's it's a story though, of redemption. Yeah,
21:24
Speaker 3: because he turned his he turned his left around. He
21:27
Speaker 3: turned many negatives into many positives. And I was told
21:30
Speaker 3: yesterday that he hadn't had a drink in like twenty
21:32
Speaker 3: years or something like that. Yeah, uh and uh uh.
21:35
Speaker 3: And he certainly was a great, great talent, I mean
21:39
Speaker 3: to come here, you know, I mean, he's a major
21:41
Speaker 3: market talent. I mean, obviously, and he came here and
21:44
Speaker 3: he had some personal issues, but he was a great broadcaster. Nonetheless,
21:47
Speaker 3: what was it about the field that made you interested
21:50
Speaker 3: in going in it? And why did you choose a
21:53
Speaker 3: career in broadcasting. When I was in college, are you
21:57
Speaker 3: from where?
21:57
Speaker 10: Originally, well, my my dad was an Air Force sophomore
22:00
Speaker 10: here from everywhere, from everywhere.
22:02
Speaker 3: He was an educator.
22:03
Speaker 10: But when I was in college, my advisor in college,
22:07
Speaker 10: and we had advisors at the time, suggested journalism and
22:12
Speaker 10: he said, you are obstreperous and nosy and large, and
22:17
Speaker 10: people like that tend to be able to poke into
22:20
Speaker 10: other people's business and that makes you happy. It does
22:23
Speaker 10: not make you happy to be meek and subservient. And
22:27
Speaker 10: in most careers, to start out, you need to be
22:30
Speaker 10: meek and conservative, you know, a subservient. And in broadcasting
22:37
Speaker 10: you can stick a mic in the governor's face and say, governor,
22:40
Speaker 10: why have you done this? And the governor can snarl
22:42
Speaker 10: back at you, and that becomes you get famous for that.
22:47
Speaker 3: Yeah, But I mean, how did you okay, how did
22:51
Speaker 3: you end up in this market? I mean, what was
22:53
Speaker 3: it about?
22:54
Speaker 10: Again? My advisor in college. I had three offers when
22:57
Speaker 10: I was graduating with a broadcaster Wilson Agree, back in
23:01
Speaker 10: the sixties, and one of them was a combination radio
23:06
Speaker 10: operation three stations in Kentucky and uh and one of
23:10
Speaker 10: them was in Illinois, and the third one was in
23:13
Speaker 10: West Virginia. It was the lowest paying of the three
23:16
Speaker 10: and it was the lowest man on the staff. And
23:19
Speaker 10: my advisor said, this boss Johnson guy, he's pretty sharp.
23:23
Speaker 10: Go to work for him and you'll get some good experience.
23:27
Speaker 10: You'll make your way in this life. And so I
23:30
Speaker 10: signed on with bos Johnson. He took me down Ritter
23:34
Speaker 10: Park in Huntington and said, this is what Huntington, this
23:36
Speaker 10: is what West Virginia looks like. I said, oh my,
23:39
Speaker 10: I had no idea.
23:42
Speaker 3: And a year.
23:43
Speaker 10: Later I was I finished my active duty in the
23:47
Speaker 10: Army Reserve. And when I finished my active duty, I
23:51
Speaker 10: was promoted to Charleston news director. And I've been in
23:54
Speaker 10: Charleston with the exception of ten years at various stations
23:59
Speaker 10: around the other part of the country. I've been here
24:01
Speaker 10: for the rest of my life.
24:02
Speaker 3: And so what was it about Charleston know that made
24:05
Speaker 3: you want to stay here? People? That's the number one
24:08
Speaker 3: answer we get, no matter what is people, these are
24:10
Speaker 3: good people. They don't warm up to you initially, but
24:13
Speaker 3: once from here are you yeah? But once they decide
24:17
Speaker 3: if you don't say Sissonsville with the extra s right.
24:20
Speaker 3: And if you don't say Putman County, they know you're
24:24
Speaker 3: not from here. But once they decide that you're honest
24:28
Speaker 3: and straightforward, they're your friends for life. Yeah, we're talking
24:31
Speaker 3: to Bob Brunner of Dave Aland showing five eighty Live
24:33
Speaker 3: is brought to you apart by your hometown baseball team,
24:36
Speaker 3: the Charles the Dirty Birds. Birds are at high point
24:38
Speaker 3: this week back at Gomart Ballpark Friday night. Tickets, promotions, schedules,
24:41
Speaker 3: merchandise more available at Dirty Birds baseball dot com. Let's
24:45
Speaker 3: talk about some of those big stories you covered early.
24:48
Speaker 3: Let's go back to the Dirty Birds. Okay, early August.
24:51
Speaker 3: You know is going to be the birthday for the
24:55
Speaker 3: toast Man. It is, and there's going to be a
24:57
Speaker 3: big party at the ballpark, Okay, on first Saturday in August,
25:01
Speaker 3: about an hour and a half before the game. So
25:03
Speaker 3: if you want to come and toast Rod Blackstone for
25:06
Speaker 3: a change, yeah, there you go. I'm mentioning make a
25:09
Speaker 3: note of that, make a note that the Toastman, Rod
25:11
Speaker 3: Blackstone celebrated what an icon here in Charleston. I mean,
25:14
Speaker 3: Rod Blackstone has been for so many years.
25:16
Speaker 10: Oh it, we we started that quote cheering section back
25:20
Speaker 10: in Watt Powell Park many many years ago, and George
25:24
Speaker 10: Manahan and Rod Blackstone and I we were kind of
25:29
Speaker 10: the main ring leaders. And it's certainly for for Rod
25:33
Speaker 10: developed it from an advocation into now a full time obsession.
25:38
Speaker 3: Obsession. Yeah, go ahead, all right, all right, No, that's fine.
25:42
Speaker 3: So let's go back and talk about about your early days.
25:45
Speaker 3: What are some of the earlier like what was the
25:47
Speaker 3: first big story that you covered or broke.
25:51
Speaker 10: Barrington mind disaster up in the northern part of the state.
25:53
Speaker 10: I was had been there at S A Z for
25:56
Speaker 10: a couple of few months, and the report that were
26:00
Speaker 10: up there, carl haveberly was not able to really grasp
26:07
Speaker 10: and cover the entire story. And Charlie Ryan was also
26:11
Speaker 10: our anchor in Charleston and the general manager. It was
26:15
Speaker 10: in the middle of rating period in November, and so
26:18
Speaker 10: our general manager wanted Charlie back to Charleston so he
26:22
Speaker 10: could anchor the show from the studio here right here
26:25
Speaker 10: by the way, And so they sent the kid, the
26:30
Speaker 10: new kid up there. And the thing that I found
26:32
Speaker 10: so mind boggling for a young man recently out of
26:39
Speaker 10: college was the acceptance of death. I expected to run
26:47
Speaker 10: into angry relatives, cursing the coal companies and cursing the
26:51
Speaker 10: state agencies that allowed this kind of thing to happen,
26:54
Speaker 10: and instead it was kind of a mute. Yeah, he died.
27:00
Speaker 10: Seventy eight people were burned to death or choked to
27:03
Speaker 10: death in that mind and it, you know, like Buffalo Cricollo.
27:09
Speaker 10: A few years after that, there was that sort of
27:12
Speaker 10: quiet acceptance that, yeah, the company's killing us, but we
27:15
Speaker 10: don't do much about it.
27:16
Speaker 3: That's very interesting that you would say that because of
27:18
Speaker 3: somebody who is from Logan County and my grandparents lived
27:21
Speaker 3: on Buffalo Creek. I never really thought about it until
27:26
Speaker 3: until you pointed that out. There was very Now My
27:29
Speaker 3: grandparents were lucky, they had some property damage. They didn't live,
27:32
Speaker 3: you know, really far up the creek, and I didn't
27:36
Speaker 3: hear a whole lot of people that were upset. I
27:39
Speaker 3: think people were more upset outside. I mean they were
27:43
Speaker 3: more upset in Charleston and Huntington about the situation than
27:45
Speaker 3: what the people of Buffalo Creek were.
27:47
Speaker 10: From what your saying, Farmington wast and you remember Governor
27:50
Speaker 10: Archmore's first news conference after the disaster, it was an
27:53
Speaker 10: act of God. Yeah, no, it was an active coal company.
27:58
Speaker 10: And you know, in reference and not caring.
28:02
Speaker 3: We had a text here said Bob Runner might be
28:04
Speaker 3: turning eighty, but he's quite a young man on the
28:06
Speaker 3: tennis on the tennis court. I don't know who sent
28:08
Speaker 3: that in. You a good times player, bum.
28:11
Speaker 10: I played tennis with some other old fogies a few
28:14
Speaker 10: days a week, and it's my one of my prime recreations.
28:18
Speaker 10: And thank you for saying that, because I maybe I
28:21
Speaker 10: play at the age of seventy five, but he's.
28:24
Speaker 3: Still pretty bad. You're doing, You're playing, which is more
28:27
Speaker 3: than I'm doing. All right, So let's go back to
28:30
Speaker 3: to Buffalo Creek, and again I had you on the
28:32
Speaker 3: show a couple of years ago. It was actually in
28:35
Speaker 3: twenty twenty two on the anniversary of Buffalo Creek. You and
28:37
Speaker 3: Speedy Babins were on the show at that time. When
28:42
Speaker 3: you got called down, you know, to go cover that story.
28:45
Speaker 3: Did you realize that it was? I mean, were you
28:48
Speaker 3: prepared for what you saw there? Because that's what I
28:50
Speaker 3: hear from a lot of people, people like the late
28:52
Speaker 3: Marty Backus, who we also had on that show, Denny Frost,
28:55
Speaker 3: Jim Mitchell, Bill Becker. You know, some of those people,
28:59
Speaker 3: they just weren't prepared for what they saw when they
29:02
Speaker 3: went there.
29:02
Speaker 10: Now we're talking about Man specifically. When that National Guard
29:07
Speaker 10: helicopter landed us and my camera and Man and I
29:11
Speaker 10: in Man, all I.
29:12
Speaker 3: Could see was beach.
29:15
Speaker 10: I had never been to Man before, and so for me,
29:18
Speaker 10: it was like, what's this disaster? How can one hundred
29:23
Speaker 10: and twenty five people be dead? Why are their bodies
29:25
Speaker 10: sacked up at the Junior High. I didn't understand. I
29:30
Speaker 10: couldn't conceptualize the size because it looked like a beach.
29:34
Speaker 10: And I think I've told you that was one of
29:35
Speaker 10: the most frustrating things about television was that so often
29:39
Speaker 10: television dramatizes disasters with great camera shots, but in Buffalo Creek,
29:45

33:18
Speaker 3: Bridge and Charleston. We get issues to repair a three
33:22

33:25
Speaker 3: lane will also be closed on the bridge to allow
33:29
Speaker 3: a boom truck to access the underside of the bridge.
33:32
Speaker 3: Apartment of Highways Bridge crews are going to patch the
33:34
Speaker 3: hole with a quick curing concrete. Now, crews hope to
33:38
Speaker 3: have two lanes of traffic westbound and the eastbound lane.
33:43
Speaker 3: The fast lane opened by five pm this evening, but
33:47
Speaker 3: the westbound center lane will remain closed until the concrete cures.
33:52
Speaker 3: The Apartment of Highways are going to update the public
33:54
Speaker 3: on the status of the repairs. The Apartment Highways has
33:58
Speaker 3: adopted a three phase plan to address the aging concrete
34:02
Speaker 3: there on the ford Hill Bridge. So that's where we

34:30
Speaker 10: I tell you what the studies done on concrete on
34:35
Speaker 10: our roads may indicate that we have had contractors over
34:39
Speaker 10: the decades. I'm not talking about this one specifically that
34:43
Speaker 10: maybe had a little more air and a little more
34:45
Speaker 10: sin than the concrete than they were supposed to have.
34:47
Speaker 3: Maybe the words of Bob Brunner, Jack says, great to
34:50
Speaker 3: hear Bob Brunner on the show This Morning, Boss Johnson,
34:52
Speaker 3: Bob Smith, Bob Brunner or Hall of Fame broadcasters. You
34:55
Speaker 3: had the confidence that they have because he was reporting
34:59
Speaker 3: the truth, reporting the truth. Do you realize what I mean,
35:03
Speaker 3: speak truth to power? I mean, and we've been talking
35:06
Speaker 3: about this with the passing to Tom McGee over the
35:10
Speaker 3: last couple of days. What a big deal that six
35:14
Speaker 3: pm television news was, whether it was any of the
35:17
Speaker 3: three channels here in Charleston. I mean, and you had
35:20
Speaker 3: Bob Smith. You know, Bob Smith actually got his start
35:23
Speaker 3: at the radio station where I worked twenty years in
35:25
Speaker 3: Logan and was anchor at Channel thirteen for a number
35:28
Speaker 3: of years, where he came up with the immortal, the
35:31
Speaker 3: immortal opening line on the eleven o'clock news one night
35:35
Speaker 3: that sent the whole area into spasms. Okay, he said,
35:39
Speaker 3: good evening.
35:40
Speaker 10: Our major story tonight is the death of a big
35:43
Speaker 10: ugly woman.
35:46
Speaker 3: Woman from big ugly Well. But for most people, they
35:50
Speaker 3: didn't get that. Yeah, they didn't get that.
35:52
Speaker 10: And Bob, Bob will go to his go to his
35:55
Speaker 10: rocking chair, wondering about that.
35:57
Speaker 3: He's doing pretty well for himself, spokesperson for Victory Toyota.
36:01
Speaker 3: Still doing the commercials. And I've never done one. Yeah,
36:04
Speaker 3: you never done a commercial ever? Would you do one now? No? Okay?
36:08
Speaker 10: I felt I built trust with people in this market
36:11
Speaker 10: for years and years and by speaking truth to power,
36:15
Speaker 10: and that's kind of you know, that's kind of what
36:17
Speaker 10: I do well. And that's good because you're a better
36:19
Speaker 10: person I am, because I would sell my mother on
36:21
Speaker 10: there if I thought I could get money for you know.
36:24
Speaker 10: But all right, so we're kind of in the mid
36:26
Speaker 10: seventies and he goes WSAZ was the top rank station.
36:30
Speaker 10: That wasn't even close, I mean at that point. And
36:34
Speaker 10: I always got a big kick out of that because
36:36
Speaker 10: at one point we were like number three rated show
36:39
Speaker 10: in the market, six o'clock news, and I really was like,
36:43
Speaker 10: puffed up, that's big deal, I'm hot stuff. Then they
36:46
Speaker 10: pointed out that number one was Porter Wagoner and number
36:50
Speaker 10: two was Truth or Consequences.
36:53
Speaker 3: Yeah, there you go. It's a you take victory into
36:56
Speaker 3: little in the little things. So you continued on WSAZ
37:00
Speaker 3: till when did you leave w SAZ.
37:02
Speaker 10: I left in nineteen ninety to go to work for
37:04
Speaker 10: Gaston Caperton as governor. Don who Don Marsh, who has
37:10
Speaker 10: a wonderful conference room here.
37:12
Speaker 3: At the station.
37:14
Speaker 10: Don was then the gazette editor and Don told me,
37:17
Speaker 10: that's the stupidest thing you've ever done. We need people
37:22
Speaker 10: speaking truth to power. And my response to him was
37:25
Speaker 10: that I believe that Governor Caperton was honest and he
37:28
Speaker 10: cared and that only made up about ten percent of
37:31
Speaker 10: the politicians in West Virginia, and he was at that
37:34
Speaker 10: point his popularity was thirteen percent. Don said he has
37:38
Speaker 10: no chance of being reelected. It's going to be down
37:41
Speaker 10: in flames, and I said, well, we'll give it a shot.
37:43
Speaker 10: So we got him reelected, and then I came back
37:46
Speaker 10: to media.
37:48
Speaker 3: What was it about Gaston Caperton?
37:50
Speaker 2: Though?
37:50
Speaker 3: Because I'm sure people in our business always have offers
37:54
Speaker 3: like that, and we've we've lost people that have gone
37:57
Speaker 3: into state government, you know, and some of us dumb
38:00
Speaker 3: enough to come back like I was. But but what
38:03
Speaker 3: what was it about Gaston Caperton that you saw that
38:06
Speaker 3: you said I want to be with this gas.
38:07
Speaker 10: The two things he was honest and he cared. There
38:10
Speaker 10: there wasn't a dishonest moment in his body. And he
38:13
Speaker 10: really cared about doing things right. And you know, he
38:17
Speaker 10: he called teachers names, and he did well. He started
38:22
Speaker 10: to started off with a five hundred million dollar actual
38:24
Speaker 10: deficit and had to rebuild the state's budget and he
38:28
Speaker 10: did it all and he did it honestly and uh
38:31
Speaker 10: and with care.
38:32
Speaker 3: But Dave Alan Chowing five Dyeline brought to you part

38:39
Speaker 3: about the first days of the Caperton administration when you
38:41
Speaker 3: came in.
38:42
Speaker 10: Well, see, I wasn't in Caproni at the first Oh,
38:45
Speaker 10: that's right, that's right. As a matter of fact, he
38:47
Speaker 10: considered me a mortal enemy because during the statewide debate
38:51
Speaker 10: where he was worrying about getting elected.
38:53
Speaker 3: I asked.
38:55
Speaker 10: A statewide audience, why if he wanted to be governor
38:58
Speaker 10: of West Virginia, he would not let either of his
39:01
Speaker 10: two sons attend any public school. And he should have
39:04
Speaker 10: been ready for that, but he wasn't, and he stumbled around.
39:08
Speaker 10: And d Caperton came to me after that debate and said,
39:12
Speaker 10: you just cost him the election. And I said, if
39:16
Speaker 10: if I did, I'm sorry, but I'm still speaking the truth.
39:18
Speaker 3: He's a legitimate question.
39:19
Speaker 10: You wouldn't send your kids to school here, and now
39:21
Speaker 10: you want to run the school system.
39:23
Speaker 3: You know what were the biggest differences for you between
39:26
Speaker 3: the state government job in the media, not being able
39:30
Speaker 3: to accept what I considered to be reasonable and nice
39:34
Speaker 3: gifts like you know, you're in the media business. You
39:36
Speaker 3: get concert tickets, you know we used to we don't know.
39:40
Speaker 10: Well, my you know, and my wife at the time
39:43
Speaker 10: would say, you can't take those anymore. Oh, you're right,
39:46
Speaker 10: I can't. I can't take anything. I can't take a
39:48
Speaker 10: I can't take a lunch or a bottle. The salesman
39:52
Speaker 10: for various places back in the old days would bring
39:54
Speaker 10: by a bottle of liquor for Christmas couldn't take that,
39:58
Speaker 10: so I was able to serve. I'm purely on my
40:01
Speaker 10: government salary.
40:03
Speaker 3: Well, and again, as I was talking to Deligate Acres
40:05
Speaker 3: about earlier, you know, one of the reasons why people
40:07
Speaker 3: going to government work many times is because it's sometimes
40:10
Speaker 3: not the highest rate of pay. But you know, when
40:13
Speaker 3: I when I was in state government, you know, one
40:15
Speaker 3: of my things was, wait a minute, I get President's
40:17
Speaker 3: Day off. I mean, I'm a guy that worked Christmas
40:19
Speaker 3: morning just about every year, so June teenth, all of them,
40:24
Speaker 3: you know, all of the holidays, and so after so
40:29
Speaker 3: you left, After you left, what did you do next?
40:31
Speaker 10: Well, I, as I said, I worked for Gaston for
40:34
Speaker 10: four years as a director of communications. And after that
40:38
Speaker 10: I finished his papers, did his book, and then I
40:42
Speaker 10: went back to went to Channel eight and worked there
40:44
Speaker 10: for four years. And then I went to Montgomery, Alabama,
40:48
Speaker 10: was news director for the CBS station down there at
40:51
Speaker 10: the state capital of Alabama. Worked for the Red Cross
40:54
Speaker 10: for a couple of years, and then I worked as
40:56
Speaker 10: my best job I ever had, and I say this
40:59
Speaker 10: because I was always an administration but they hired me
41:02
Speaker 10: in Tennessee the CBS stations to be the Tennessee Traveler.
41:07
Speaker 3: They gave me.
41:08
Speaker 10: A big Ford explorer and the cameraman and I drove
41:14
Speaker 10: all around the state and my job was find something interesting.
41:20
Speaker 3: What a playground for a report. I mean it's great.
41:22
Speaker 3: I'd be all about the job like that. Maybe we
41:24
Speaker 3: should we should talk to the folks here and we
41:26
Speaker 3: should do that here with Metro News, you know, well
41:29
Speaker 3: Bob and Dave on the road, there we go. I mean,
41:32
Speaker 3: I'm going to find the places to eat. That's what
41:33
Speaker 3: I'm going to do. Oh yeah, I'm a foodie.
41:36
Speaker 10: I can tell you. I can tell you the first
41:37
Speaker 10: eighteen right now.
41:40
Speaker 3: Give me give me two. Give me two places in
41:42

42:02
Speaker 10: handmade pizzas up there. That would be my first one.
42:04
Speaker 10: And my second one would be whatever is serving the best,
42:09
Speaker 10: uh the best hot bolooney And there's one in Fayette County.

Speaker 3: have a joke of a Department of Highways and allowing
45:56
Speaker 3: our government to have to accept low bids on projects.
46:01
Speaker 3: All right, Brunner, I know you want to say something, man,
46:03
Speaker 3: so go ahead. I just said, bingo. That's all I said.
46:07
Speaker 3: Was was was being good. And it's at any time
46:10
Speaker 3: during your career when you were doing stories on let's say,
46:14
Speaker 3: controversial things, court cases, things of that nature, do you
46:17
Speaker 3: ever feel I mean, you're a big guy, so I
46:19
Speaker 3: don't think Aboudy really physically threatened you unless they had
46:22
Speaker 3: like a gun pulled on you. But I mean, were
46:24
Speaker 3: you ever fearful of some of the stories you gus reported.
46:27
Speaker 10: Not fearful of the stories, although there were suggestions even
46:31
Speaker 10: from one circuit judge that I've got a control carry
46:35
Speaker 10: permit for gun. I never I've never had a weapon.
46:39
Speaker 10: I don't I don't carry weapons, So I'm sorry to
46:41
Speaker 10: tell people that so they know I'm more vulnerable.
46:44
Speaker 3: But what the hell.
46:45
Speaker 10: But in any event, I was we were talking off
46:50
Speaker 10: the air about Logan County and and your background there,
46:54
Speaker 10: and I will never forget late sixties. Somebody was being
46:58
Speaker 10: looked at by the Grand Injury down there, and Bernard
47:02
Speaker 10: Smith was like the county manager. He was also a
47:05
Speaker 10: state centator.
47:06
Speaker 3: Who's everything like that? And he came up. I was
47:08
Speaker 3: holding a microphone in his face. He came up.
47:10
Speaker 10: One of the great quotes I ever got on television.
47:14
Speaker 10: He not only don't know nothing, he don't suspect much.
47:19
Speaker 3: I can hear him say something like that, I was stopped.
47:25
Speaker 3: How do you follow up that?
47:27
Speaker 8: You?
47:28
Speaker 3: Who are some of the other characters like that that
47:31
Speaker 3: you that you covered from time to time? Be it
47:34
Speaker 3: somebody that was well known, somebody an elected official, non electificial?
47:37
Speaker 3: Who are some of the more colorful characters? The most
47:40
Speaker 3: colorful was hey, James manch Oh, I have no doubt there.
47:42
Speaker 3: You know, when we were talking about Logan County, the
47:46
Speaker 3: Prince of Logan County was Bill Becker. You had to
47:48
Speaker 3: have lunch with Bill down.
47:49
Speaker 10: At the smokeout Bok House, and Bill owned the Becker
47:53
Speaker 10: family still owns the radio station.
47:55
Speaker 3: There is mister Becker I think passed in I want
47:58
Speaker 3: to say nineteen ninety five or ninety five, and Missus
48:01
Speaker 3: Becker died about ten years or so later. But the
48:04
Speaker 3: Becker family still owns the radio station where I work
48:06
Speaker 3: for twenty years, still on the air. Still as a
48:09
Speaker 3: matter of fact, right now, I don't want people tune
48:11
Speaker 3: it out, But what's your opinion? The call in show
48:13
Speaker 3: is on and at one thirty Trading Post will be on.
48:15
Speaker 3: Oh trading Posts. Oh logan, we coined it. We coined
48:20
Speaker 3: the phrase years ago. Logan county eBay an eBay first
48:24
Speaker 3: became a thing because you could trade a shotgun. You
48:27
Speaker 3: could trade you trade gun, trade a shotgun for a wife. Yes, yeah,
48:31
Speaker 3: that's what and logan that's what we call a military wedding. Uh.
48:37
Speaker 3: But what made a James Manson so much fun to cover?
48:40
Speaker 10: He was the first politician I was with who understood
48:44
Speaker 10: a thirty second sound bite. And if you were with
48:47
Speaker 10: a James and he had a bunch of trash somewhere,
48:49
Speaker 10: you'd say, a James, we got thirty seconds.
48:51
Speaker 3: He'd do you thirty seconds.
48:53
Speaker 10: You know, let's parge these proud and peaks of these
48:56
Speaker 10: jumble jungles of junker and he'd get on TV that
49:00
Speaker 10: like perfect.
49:00
Speaker 3: Yeah, he was a colorful guide. Of course he's going
49:03
Speaker 3: to be remembered for it, much like Arch More. Uh
49:07
Speaker 3: you know, ar many people have told me, and we'll
49:10
Speaker 3: close with this, many people told me that Arch Moore
49:14
Speaker 3: was the best, one of the one of the best
49:16
Speaker 3: governors that West Virginia ever had agreed except for which
49:22
Speaker 3: is kind of like saying, other than that, missus Lincoln,
49:24
Speaker 3: how was to play or maybe because up Yeah, okay,
49:28
Speaker 3: all right, your memories of Arch Moore? Uh Emperor, Yeah,
49:35
Speaker 3: little guy he wasn't wasn't very big, oh five foot six.
49:39
Speaker 10: Actually, he was really upset that his state troopers detail.
49:43
Speaker 10: They they had a minimum height requirement for state troopers,
49:47
Speaker 10: so Arch was usually dwarfed. But whenever they had a
49:50
Speaker 10: new class at the State Police Academy, he would find
49:52
Speaker 10: the shortest guise to put on his own security details.
49:55
Speaker 10: So he did not appear to be so small.
49:57
Speaker 3: And people, I think forget about Arch's military career. I mean,
50:00
Speaker 3: this is a guy that was he had a space
50:01
Speaker 3: blown off. Yeah, yeah, completely, and he was able you know,
50:05
Speaker 3: to uh, you know, he was able to go on
50:08
Speaker 3: to be arch More. He had to relearn to speak. Yeah,
50:11
Speaker 3: people forget about that. I've read a couple of biographies
50:13
Speaker 3: on arch More. You're exactly right about that. Hey, Bob,
50:16
Speaker 3: it was a pleasure having on the show. Let's do
50:18
Speaker 3: it again, somebody, let's do it again. We could we
50:21
Speaker 3: could continue this, I think, but hang out here with
50:23
Speaker 3: me just one second, because I'm gonna go to this
50:25
Speaker 3: guy over here. Do you know TJ. Meadows By? I

51:00
Speaker 15: the opioid dollars. He's going to stop by update from
51:03
Speaker 15: Ohio County. How are they recovering? Got the money yesterday?
51:06
Speaker 15: How will that be used? James Moore, he's a president

Speaker 3: to town because he's actually gonna be in studio. Hey Man, lawsuits,
51:29
Speaker 3: galore lawsuits and uh and don't plan on leaving the

Speaker 3: in late. I saw it. They got ooh my, my my, mine,
51:39
Speaker 3: my mind.
51:40
Speaker 15: Yeah, they're gonna have to escalate that. I mean, I
51:42
Speaker 15: think twenty seven they're gonna redo it. It's not gonna
51:44
Speaker 15: last until twenty seven now.
