- 0:22SPEAKER_00: We're in the middle of a short series on writing habits here on the Daily Writer Podcast, and this has been a lot of fun.
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: And I appreciate you joining me for this little series that we're doing.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: Today we're going to talk about one of the hardest yet most important practices to develop when you're building a writing habit.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: So this is actually practice number six, and it is keep writing even when you think it's bad.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: So maybe this has happened to you in the past.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: You write some kind of piece, now it might be a blog post or social media or podcast or an article or an email.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: You write something and you don't think it's that great.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: However, you share it and people love it.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: Well, it's baffling, but it's true.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: We're not always the best judge of the quality of our work.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: As somebody once said, what you think of me is none of my business.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: And there's some truth to that when it comes to how other people perceive our writing.
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: Whenever we're writing, we tend to judge it sometimes really harshly, but it's important that we realize we don't always know when something's going to resonate with other people.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: In other words, it's almost impossible to be objective about our own work.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: So keep on writing even when you don't think you're doing a very good job.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: The great William Faulkner said, get it down, take chances.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: It may be bad, but it's the only way you can do anything really good.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: Plus, when you keep on writing, it's the only way to actually finish something.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: If you're always in editing and revising mode and you're never in creation mode, it'll take forever to get something done.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: So just keep on writing and you can go back and revise it later.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: Here's today's question.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: Do you feel that you are objective about your own writing?
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: And are you able to keep writing even when you don't think you're doing a very good job?
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: Be honest.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: Today's episode is an excerpt from our new ebook, How to Build a Writing Habit.
