- 0:59Speaker 2: every Thursday at nine o'clock. Sorry you were a little late,
- 1:01Speaker 2: Jeff having a Rockies discussion. This is the time of year.
- 1:06Speaker 3: I think you don't hear very often on the morning.
- 1:09Speaker 2: Well, this is this is the deal. Like you know,
- 1:10Speaker 2: I'm a baseball guy and so I love this time
- 1:14Speaker 2: of year where spring hope or hope springs eternal and
- 1:18Speaker 2: all that different stuff, and you have optimism about the team.
- 1:21Speaker 2: But if I'm fighting these Rockies fans who understandably are
- 1:25Speaker 2: dejected about that franchise, and I'm just like, I'm not
- 1:28Speaker 2: going to throw in the towel before the season starts.
- 1:30Speaker 2: I want to be happy.
- 1:31Speaker 4: Listen. We love a young, impressionable mind that is new
- 1:36Speaker 4: to town and clearly hasn't suffered them.
- 1:39Speaker 3: It's fine. Well, I mean, I don't know how else
- 1:41Speaker 3: to explain it.
- 1:42Speaker 4: I mean, I just told him, Leggy, I've been I've
- 1:44Speaker 4: been beaten over the head by this bat for you know, decades.
- 1:47Speaker 4: And that's fine. I was in your shoes before, I
- 1:49Speaker 4: really was. I get it. It's I love it. I
- 1:53Speaker 4: love that raw optimism.
- 1:55Speaker 3: I wish I had more of that.
- 1:56Speaker 4: But you'll find out, You'll.
- 1:58Speaker 5: See, well, you know, they're just in the same division
- 2:01Speaker 5: as the Dodgers.
- 2:02Speaker 3: That's so end the story.
- 2:04Speaker 4: That's where they just shut the book.
- 2:06Speaker 3: Shut the book.
- 2:07Speaker 2: But but my argument, like we'll get the football in
- 2:10Speaker 2: a second. They can actually apply to football. My argument
- 2:13Speaker 2: is you don't need to be better than the Dodgers
- 2:15Speaker 2: for one hundred and sixty two games, get in the
- 2:17Speaker 2: playoffs and be better for like a seven game series
- 2:19Speaker 2: or a five game series. That's what you need.
- 2:22Speaker 5: I think it's going to be hard to be better
- 2:24Speaker 5: than them for one game. I mean, that's you know
- 2:27Speaker 5: the Dodgers are. They've they've warped the whole system. You know,
- 2:31Speaker 5: they got they got people in baseball trying to figure
- 2:34Speaker 5: out if they need to like tear down the entire
- 2:37Speaker 5: financial structure of baseball because of what the Dodgers have done.
- 2:41Speaker 5: So some of it's just the bad luck of the draw.
- 2:44Speaker 5: But you know, I'll I'll go. I love baseball. I've
- 2:49Speaker 5: always loved baseball. But it's man, there's uphill battles and
- 2:53Speaker 5: then there is there are cliffs. Well this is a cliff.
- 2:58Speaker 3: Listen.
- 2:58Speaker 4: He's a former baseball right or himself, And you're right, Jeff,
- 3:01Speaker 4: you know better than most. The biggest issue in Denver,
- 3:05Speaker 4: Colorado for the local baseball team is maintaining pitching. You
- 3:11Speaker 4: can develop it, they get hurt, you can't go buy
- 3:14Speaker 4: it here. Nobody's coming here to pitch with the rest.
- 3:18Speaker 4: Nobody's doing that. You know, you mentioned the Diamondbacks there, Brett.
- 3:22Speaker 4: They got Kurt Shilling and Randy Johnson to go to
- 3:24Speaker 4: Arizona to pitch. Those guys aren't coming here.
- 3:26Speaker 2: Early two thousands.
- 3:28Speaker 4: But those guys aren't coming here. Pictures don't look it's
- 3:31Speaker 4: not happening.
- 3:33Speaker 3: Now.
- 3:33Speaker 5: You, your agent is gonna say, you have these choices,
- 3:38Speaker 5: let's rank them, you know, by money, you know, beyond
- 3:42Speaker 5: the money.
- 3:43Speaker 3: You would have to have.
- 3:44Speaker 5: A significant competitive stream to want to show everybody it
- 3:49Speaker 5: doesn't matter or you don't care about physics or whatever
- 3:53Speaker 5: to come and pitch here. If you are a free agent,
- 3:57Speaker 5: a marquee free agent pitcher.
- 3:59Speaker 2: Well let's stay on that. The agent discussing the the
- 4:04Speaker 2: options with their player. We've asked about t Higgins before,
- 4:09Speaker 2: you've told us he's prototypical. Sean Payton. Guy just saw
- 4:12Speaker 2: today Sports betting ag for some reason, has the Broncos
- 4:16Speaker 2: as the favorites to land him outside of Cincy. Here's
- 4:18Speaker 2: my question, though, is it wise for the Broncos to
- 4:21Speaker 2: pay upwards of thirty million dollars a year for a
- 4:24Speaker 2: wide out this offseason?
- 4:26Speaker 5: I think history has shown that wide out is not
- 4:29Speaker 5: a position that puts you over the top. But I
- 4:32Speaker 5: know people who consume football through fantasy football. Don't agree
- 4:37Speaker 5: with that assessment. But general managers most in the league
- 4:42Speaker 5: you know, to me, Justin Jefferson as a unicorn. Justin
- 4:46Speaker 5: Jefferson is a good enough, special enough wide out to
- 4:51Speaker 5: lead you.
- 4:52Speaker 3: To great places.
- 4:54Speaker 5: But you don't see the you know, unless they make
- 4:57Speaker 5: a spectacular catch in the final minute of the Super Bowl.
- 5:01Speaker 5: You don't see wide receivers in the discussion for Super
- 5:04Speaker 5: Bowl MVP very often. You don't see him in the
- 5:07Speaker 5: discussion for League MVP very often. I mean, there was
- 5:11Speaker 5: a triple Crown winner this year and the wide receiving
- 5:15Speaker 5: you know, one of the like fourth or fifth time ever,
- 5:18Speaker 5: and this team didn't make the playoffs. Yeah, I mean
- 5:20Speaker 5: that that's the problem I have from a just the
- 5:25Speaker 5: ten thousand foot view of diving all in on a
- 5:28Speaker 5: wide receiver.
- 5:29Speaker 3: I think there are higher value positions.
- 5:32Speaker 5: Doesn't mean I don't think they don't need more pop
- 5:36Speaker 5: for in the offense. However it comes at running back,
- 5:39Speaker 5: wide receiver, tight end, whatever. They need more impact. That
- 5:43Speaker 5: doesn't have to be the passing game, but they need
- 5:46Speaker 5: more impact.
- 5:47Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 5:47Speaker 4: We said the same thing regarding the guy like Higgins.
- 5:50Speaker 4: In my estimation Leggie. They need a chain mover third
- 5:54Speaker 4: and three. I don't care what the situation is.
- 5:57Speaker 3: However, they gotta do it, run the ball, whatever.
- 6:01Speaker 5: And this team has had so little impact at tight
- 6:05Speaker 5: end for years, I mean years. They're they're so far
- 6:10Speaker 5: behind the league curve of the best offenses at running
- 6:14Speaker 5: back and tight end that they're either going to go
- 6:17Speaker 5: their own way and show that you can do it differently,
- 6:22Speaker 5: or they're going to, you know, at some point get
- 6:24Speaker 5: in the parade, which against all of these nickel defenses,
- 6:29Speaker 5: that's the matchup. The best offenses are winning down after
- 6:33Speaker 5: down after down, and the.
- 6:34Speaker 3: Broncos don't win them.
- 6:36Speaker 5: Only the Panthers and the Giants, two of the worst
- 6:40Speaker 5: teams in football, had more three and outs than the
- 6:44Speaker 5: Broncos this year. So don't bring me that they're suddenly
- 6:49Speaker 5: have turned the corner on offense with Bo Nicks or
- 6:52Speaker 5: anybody else.
- 6:53Speaker 3: They're one of the worst in the NFL at three.
- 6:57Speaker 5: And outs, and you don't go very far, especially in
- 7:01Speaker 5: this AFCUH with that on your resume.
- 7:04Speaker 4: You know what I noticed in the Super Bowl leg
- 7:06Speaker 4: It's funny you bring that up. The Philadelphia Eagles offense
- 7:10Speaker 4: clearly a little different than the Broncos offense. But one
- 7:13Speaker 4: thing they did not get away from. Even though it
- 7:15Speaker 4: didn't do much, they kept pounding and pounding and pounding.
- 7:22Speaker 4: I think Barkley was, what do the average I got
- 7:24Speaker 4: two yards of carry? He wasn't doing much. But they
- 7:27Speaker 4: never abandoned who they are and that's the difference. Too
- 7:31Speaker 4: many times the Broncos just abandon the run game.
- 7:36Speaker 5: Well, you guys know my theory. It's a disease in coaching.
- 7:41Speaker 5: Teams will live with fifteen bad pass plays in a
- 7:45Speaker 5: role and keep on chucking it. But you have one
- 7:49Speaker 5: bad run and you got coaches and play callers running
- 7:53Speaker 5: for the hills. I never understand it, have never understood it,
- 7:58Speaker 5: especially against nickel defenses. I mean, Zach Bond was an
- 8:04Speaker 5: All Pro linebacker for the Eagles. He probably played at
- 8:08Speaker 5: two hundred and twenty three pounds this year. That's what
- 8:11Speaker 5: you're looking at on the field right now. Inside linebackers
- 8:15Speaker 5: are the size of former safeties. Safeties are corners. I mean,
- 8:20Speaker 5: it is a lighter world out there defensively, and if
- 8:25Speaker 5: you don't pound, you're missing great opportunities to move the ball.
- 8:30Speaker 5: And it doesn't mean you're not smart. Doesn't mean you're
- 8:32Speaker 5: not innovative, doesn't mean people won't call you a genius.
- 8:37Speaker 5: It just means you, you know, you prefer pretty over winning.
- 8:41Speaker 2: At the start of the year, you're inside, speaking of
- 8:44Speaker 2: that position, your inside linebacker room was Alex Singleton and
- 8:48Speaker 2: Cody Barton zero one or both come back next year
- 8:51Speaker 2: and play.
- 8:53Speaker 5: I think Singleton, you know, obviously has the best chance
- 8:56Speaker 5: because he's recovering well from his injury. It's just a
- 8:58Speaker 5: matter of what they want to do. You know, they're
- 9:02Speaker 5: I know they're looking. You know, they're that right now.
- 9:06Speaker 5: Their coaches are are looking over the free agency choices
- 9:11Speaker 5: to see if they match the personnel department. So that's
- 9:14Speaker 5: what their Broncos are doing right now. They're meshing what
- 9:17Speaker 5: the coaches want, what the personnel department thinks is available.
- 9:22Speaker 5: So they are doing that. I know they want to
- 9:24Speaker 5: be bigger on the inside, you know. So your hope
- 9:28Speaker 5: is if you're the Broncos without much turnover, that Singleton's
- 9:32Speaker 5: back and there's you know, it's just a question of
- 9:34Speaker 5: how how he's recovering from the injury and and how
- 9:37Speaker 5: they feel about, you know, where they are against the
- 9:40Speaker 5: cap and all of that.
- 9:42Speaker 4: Leggy, I assume you're doing the Combine again this year?
- 9:44Speaker 3: Correct? Yes and thirty nine.
- 9:48Speaker 4: Yeah, you are like the mayor of India. I mean,
- 9:50Speaker 4: if you want nightlife recommendations in Indianapolis, talk to them.
- 9:54Speaker 3: I could recommend maybe everything else.
- 9:58Speaker 4: So this just came down Travis Hunter, see you start,
- 10:02Speaker 4: formercy you start, is going to the Combine and he
- 10:05Speaker 4: is going to be listed officially the corner cornerback.
- 10:09Speaker 3: Yeah, that's that's his position.
- 10:11Speaker 5: Okay, I know it's not a popular opinion, but he
- 10:14Speaker 5: he I've told people he is an awesome wide receiver,
- 10:19Speaker 5: an amazing athlete of awesome wide receiver. He is the
- 10:24Speaker 5: rarest player at corner and it is much harder for
- 10:28Speaker 5: an NFL team to find Travis Hunter at corner than
- 10:32Speaker 5: it is for them to find Travis Hunter at wide receiver.
- 10:35Speaker 5: The other and I did a story with Champ Bailey
- 10:38Speaker 5: earlier this year because Champ is the real, the last
- 10:42Speaker 5: real two way player in big time college football. And
- 10:46Speaker 5: Champ returned kickoffs and punts his last year too, and
- 10:50Speaker 5: played both ways, so he's the best person to speak
- 10:54Speaker 5: about what Travis Hunter faces. And he says, you know,
- 10:58Speaker 5: the two way window. So it's gonna be very short
- 11:02Speaker 5: for Travis Hunter in the NFL. You're not gonna if
- 11:04Speaker 5: you do it, you're not gonna be able to do.
- 11:05Speaker 3: It for very long.
- 11:07Speaker 5: And it's easier in the day to day world of
- 11:11Speaker 5: the NFL for him to be a corner and sprinkle
- 11:14Speaker 5: in on the offense than the other way around.
- 11:17Speaker 3: So that's why he thought too, that that's the direction
- 11:23Speaker 3: that it would go.
- 11:23Speaker 5: And I think Travis Hunters being told that by NFL
- 11:27Speaker 5: teams as well well.
- 11:28Speaker 4: The assumption was he'd go where the money is in.
- 11:30Speaker 4: The money's at the wide receiver position.
- 11:33Speaker 3: Yeah, but his career, yeah, I agree with his.
- 11:36Speaker 5: Career will be much better, longer, awesome, And ask pats
- 11:41Speaker 5: Er Tan, there's money at corner. You know, there's a
- 11:44Speaker 5: lot of money at corners. So no, he's just he's
- 11:49Speaker 5: the rarest player.
- 11:51Speaker 3: You know. The issue is snap count. I mean, just
- 11:55Speaker 3: take the numbers.
- 11:56Speaker 5: He was over a little over fourteen hundred at see
- 11:59Speaker 5: you this past season, fourteen hundred snaps, fourteen thirty something
- 12:03Speaker 5: like that. If you are a starting defensive back in
- 12:07Speaker 5: the NFL, you play between one thousand and eleven hundred,
- 12:11Speaker 5: so you're already almost to his college total on one
- 12:16Speaker 5: side of the ball in the NFL. So that's the issue.
- 12:20Speaker 5: If he plays fourteen hundred snaps like this year when
- 12:24Speaker 5: he was by far the leader in college football, you
- 12:29Speaker 5: play fourteen hundred in the NFL, you're only playing about
- 12:32Speaker 5: two point fifty on the other side of the ball,
- 12:35Speaker 5: and that's not very many.
- 12:37Speaker 3: What's his weakness at receiver or.
- 12:41Speaker 2: Just in general? Like, what would you say?
- 12:45Speaker 5: His weakness is he's too awesome at everything, so nothing
- 12:48Speaker 5: is really refined.
- 12:50Speaker 3: If that makes sense.
- 12:51Speaker 1: No, it does.
- 12:51Speaker 2: It's just so funny to put it that way. Uh,
- 12:54Speaker 2: weakness is you're too great good.
- 12:56Speaker 3: You're awesome.
- 12:57Speaker 5: You're awesome at everything, so people want you to do everything. Now,
- 13:02Speaker 5: as a receiver, his routes are a little muddy, as
- 13:05Speaker 5: they call it. But he wins on talent and that
- 13:08Speaker 5: you know, it's just epic amounts of tailent. I mean,
- 13:11Speaker 5: come on, but uh, you know he's not winning because
- 13:15Speaker 5: the top of the route is sharp, and it's and
- 13:17Speaker 5: the and the you know, the twelve yard dig is
- 13:21Speaker 5: exactly at twelve yards and all of those things. And
- 13:25Speaker 5: that's that's what people look at in the draft. I mean,
- 13:27Speaker 5: that's that's they great. Everything is just part of the gig,
- 13:31Speaker 5: but that his only weakness is that he can do
- 13:33Speaker 5: so much. He's really not been allowed to refine a
- 13:38Speaker 5: lot of those things.
- 13:39Speaker 2: Just one other thing, real quick. Speaking of his teammate,
- 13:42Speaker 2: who is also pretty good, Shador Sanders, who looks like
- 13:45Speaker 2: he's going to be one of the top picks. I
- 13:46Speaker 2: just saw something the other day and if you ask
- 13:48Speaker 2: any scouts like what are the most important details and quarterbacks,
- 13:52Speaker 2: most of them will have accuracy near the top of
- 13:54Speaker 2: the list, if not at the top.
- 13:57Speaker 3: He's the most accurate guy on the board by far.
- 13:59Speaker 2: Shador. I didn't know this for it was a minimum
- 14:02Speaker 2: pass attempt for a season. I think it was like
- 14:03Speaker 2: four fifty or something.
- 14:04Speaker 4: Yeah, he was.
- 14:05Speaker 3: His numbers are it's all time.
- 14:07Speaker 2: No, no, it's number one ever in college football for
- 14:09Speaker 2: completion percentage.
- 14:10Speaker 5: Well since say measure we don't know what it looked like. Yeah, right,
- 14:15Speaker 5: but no, it's that's his Uh. His finest attributes are
- 14:19Speaker 5: his processing, his toughness, and his accuracy. And that makes
- 14:25Speaker 5: you a hell of a quarterback in the NFL. His
- 14:27Speaker 5: issue is he has got to show that holding the
- 14:32Speaker 5: ball was a choice and not a habit. And that
- 14:35Speaker 5: that's a humongous thing in the NFL world.
- 14:39Speaker 3: Because I mean, you just look at it.
- 14:42Speaker 5: Uh, you know, his his hold the ball numbers are
- 14:45Speaker 5: also by far ahead of everybody else in.
- 14:49Speaker 4: The I love that terminology holding the ball is a choice,
- 14:52Speaker 4: not a habit, because the choice would be, Hey, my
- 14:54Speaker 4: my offensive line has too many holes in it, and
- 14:56Speaker 4: it's the only chance I have here.
- 14:58Speaker 5: Now I'm the best chance, yes for a big play,
- 15:01Speaker 5: So I'm going to try and make it. But you've
- 15:03Speaker 5: got to show people, because if it's a habit, I
- 15:07Speaker 5: will tell you. And look, I know people always tell
- 15:10Speaker 5: me all the time, you're not a coach, leg, You're
- 15:13Speaker 5: not a scout.
- 15:13Speaker 3: I get it.
- 15:14Speaker 5: But I will tell you holding the ball is the
- 15:18Speaker 5: most difficult habit to break for a quarterback.
- 15:22Speaker 3: If it's really a habit.
- 15:24Speaker 2: Yeah, Jeff Lagwell joins us every single Thursday right here
