- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:03culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:06media, the creator economy and the digital space every Monday
- 0:10through Thursday. I'm your host Lauren Meisner,
- 0:13the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:18Welcome back to Mini scroll everyone.
- 0:19Happy Tuesday. Let's get right into the stories
- 0:22for today because I have three stories for you guys.
- 0:25The first story is that Euphoria has finally responded to the
- 0:29massive backlash over their foundation shade range
- 0:32expansion. So for a little recap, last year
- 0:36Euphoria came under fire when it released a Skin tint serum
- 0:40foundation with a very non inclusive shade range.
- 0:44The foundation had 15 shades, but the darkest was a golden
- 0:47brown. Off the back of criticism from
- 0:49the beauty community, Euphoria founder Fiona Kochan made a
- 0:53TikTok in October, which has since been deleted.
- 0:57She said the brand intended to extend the shade range before
- 1:00the launch, but wanted to test the product out with some
- 1:03initial shades first quote. It was always my intention to
- 1:07launch this as a proof of concept to see if people even
- 1:10liked the base formula. She said this year the brand
- 1:13launched 10 new shades of the foundation.
- 1:16And people got even more mad because the darkest shade, Shade
- 1:21600, was quite literally just jet black face paint.
- 1:26So this turned into a huge scandal in early May after many
- 1:30black content creators made videos about this shade, noting
- 1:33that it didn't have an undertone, like basically at
- 1:36all. In fact, cosmetic chemist Javon
- 1:38Ford did a breakdown of the shades ingredients and he found
- 1:42that it was basically just black pigment mixed with a tiny bit of
- 1:47white. So essentially a dark Gray
- 1:50foundation. No one's skin tone is dark Gray.
- 1:53OK. So things really took off,
- 1:55though, when the brand tried to almost make a light of all of
- 1:58this feedback. They started a series on TikTok
- 2:01where they went in search, quote UN quote, for someone who suits
- 2:05shade 600. In one TikTok, Fiona approached
- 2:08people on the street and put it on their skin to prove, quote,
- 2:11UN quote, that it works on some people.
- 2:13This was in direct contradiction, obviously, to
- 2:16what she had said previously, which I mentioned before, which
- 2:19is that they were requiring proof of concept that people
- 2:22would buy their shades before releasing them.
- 2:25So this got picked up everywhere.
- 2:26It was all over mainstream news. Now, just over a month later,
- 2:31Euphoria has returned with a statement addressing the
- 2:34backlash. They posted an Instagram story
- 2:37today. It's two slides.
- 2:39The first slide says our commitment to providing
- 2:41inclusive products. The second slide, we care about
- 2:44our customers. And as we continue to drive
- 2:46change, we are creating a new position internally dedicated to
- 2:49examining both our current products and those in
- 2:51development, so we can best meet your needs.
- 2:53OK, So when you go to their website, they have like a values
- 2:56page as they mentioned in that post.
- 2:59So it's under our commitment section.
- 3:02And it says over the last year, we expanded our shade range
- 3:05based on feedback from the Euphoria community.
- 3:08Inclusion is a lifelong pursuit and we are continuing to listen
- 3:11to community members and industry experts to help Dr.
- 3:14meaningful change across our industry.
- 3:17And then they also say we have created this new role.
- 3:20So nowhere so far in here is, you know, an apology or even
- 3:25kind of like a direct address of what happened.
- 3:30No explanation as to how they developed shade 600 or how they
- 3:34developed the shade range like the shade expansion in general.
- 3:38They really glossed over this. So then when you go to the job
- 3:41description, OK, so they are hiring for a director of product
- 3:45development with a strong commitment to DEI principles,
- 3:51diversity, equity and inclusion. So one of the key
- 3:54responsibilities it says manage the product development process
- 3:57from concept to launch, overseeing product life cycle
- 4:01from creating the marketing brief to delivery at the
- 4:03warehouse, including formula development, packaging
- 4:06development, Co GS and margin, ensuring alignment with
- 4:10Euphorias brand values and DEI goals.
- 4:14OK, so the number one criticism about all of this is well, the
- 4:19first criticism is that this was not an apology or even a proper
- 4:22address. The second I, I guess maybe they
- 4:25don't think they need to apologize.
- 4:27Like they released a shade that I guess they believe does suit
- 4:33someone. I mean, they found quote UN
- 4:35quote, found someone to suit that shade.
- 4:37So maybe they really don't see the problem here with like the
- 4:40lack of undertone and how they tried to play it off and all of
- 4:44that. Maybe they don't see an issue
- 4:45with that. But the second biggest criticism
- 4:49is that the job posting that they're hiring for is like two
- 4:53or three different jobs. Like being the director of
- 4:56product development is very different than being ADEI
- 5:00expert. So I want to read a comment on
- 5:03Instagram. It's one of the top comments on
- 5:05their like posting about this. It's by a user named Lytia MH.
- 5:10They write just went to look at the job.
- 5:12Why is this ADEI director and product development position?
- 5:16It's like 3 jobs in one. There should be an expert
- 5:19focused solely on product development because product
- 5:21development should be inclusive from the jump.
- 5:24Then there should be an internal DEI consultant with experience
- 5:28in new media, artist relations, comms, inclusion at the
- 5:31corporate and consumer level who works with product development
- 5:35marketing in all departments to ensure all efforts are made for
- 5:38continued inclusion across the brand and its identity.
- 5:42Come on now euphoria y'all keep taking these LS because you're
- 5:45being hard headed. I think that's exactly what it
- 5:48is. Product development for a beauty
- 5:49brand should be inclusive. That's should be the baseline in
- 5:542024. So you know, to be like our
- 5:58product developer needs to have like DEI at the forefront.
- 6:02That should just already be the baseline.
- 6:04And then of course, as this person notes, there are specific
- 6:08like consultants, like there's like full careers built around
- 6:11how to help corporations with DEI.
- 6:14And completely agree, there should be a specific person who
- 6:18is like brought in as a consultant for this role who
- 6:22works with product development. It shouldn't be like a catch all
- 6:25job. All right, the next story that I
- 6:26have for you guys is that Sabrina Carpenter has announced
- 6:28her new album following the success of Espresso.
- 6:32So Sabrina Carpenter has announced her 6th studio album,
- 6:35Short and Sweet, to be released on August 23rd.
- 6:39Espresso, which is, you know, the actual bop of the year, is
- 6:44the title single. She also teased that she has a
- 6:47surprise for fans on Thursday night.
- 6:50Some people think, could it be another single?
- 6:52Others are thinking maybe it's like a tour announcement.
- 6:55But I don't know if artists release tickets before an album
- 7:00has been released. I feel like no, I'm thinking a
- 7:03single, but I don't know enough about Sabrina Carpenter's
- 7:07artistry lore to have, I think, a real opinion on that.
- 7:11But I'm very, very excited and I'm looking forward to see what
- 7:15direction she goes in. Annabelle said to me today
- 7:19Sabrina Carpenter is in her pop girly sell out era in a good
- 7:23way. And I totally agree.
- 7:25She really needed that bubble gum pop hit like Espresso to
- 7:29just shoot her to super stardom after the era's tour 'cause she
- 7:32was already like on that way and becoming more popular and
- 7:35Espresso has just shot her into the stratosphere.
- 7:38So if she brings us like a bubble gum pop bop album, that
- 7:42will solidify her and then she can release, you know, kind of
- 7:46those like heartier, more meaningful, more like ballad
- 7:50type songs that she's a little bit more known for, I would say.
- 7:53Or that at least that has been part of her discography for
- 7:57longer. But yes, I'm so excited.
- 8:00Espresso's amazing. She's amazing.
- 8:02She was so good on the era's tour.
- 8:04Oh my God. Like, she commands a stage.
- 8:08It was unreal. She was up there with just her
- 8:11band behind her, no backup dancers, really like, no frills.
- 8:16And it was such a performance. Like, she is truly a performer.
- 8:21All right. And the last way that I have for
- 8:23you guys is that X has announced, as in Twitter has
- 8:28announced that it will soon allow adult content on the
- 8:32platform. So in a new blog post, X wrote
- 8:36quote you may share consensually produced and distributed adult
- 8:39nudity or sexual behavior provided it's properly labeled
- 8:43and not prominently displayed. We believe that users should be
- 8:47able to create, distribute and consume material related to
- 8:49sexual themes as long as it is consensually produced and
- 8:53distributed. Sexual expression, whether
- 8:55visual are written, can be a legitimate form of artistic
- 8:58expression. They say.
- 8:59We balance this freedom by restricting exposure to adult
- 9:02content for children or adult users who choose not to see it.
- 9:06And then of course, they kind of talk about how they ban other
- 9:09types of content that would harm minors and things like that.
- 9:11This is so interesting. It's giving last ditch attempt
- 9:19at bringing users back to acts because when Tumblr banned
- 9:24nudity, that obviously just like shook the Internet and it
- 9:28destroyed Tumblr. So I think maybe the theory here
- 9:33is that X is open to being or trying to be somewhat of the new
- 9:38Tumblr or like get at least some of that audience.
- 9:41I think maybe this isn't also an attempt to, I was going to say
- 9:45build community on X, but actually don't think that's what
- 9:50it is. I think it's an absolute play
- 9:52for more users. It's no surprise X is absolutely
- 9:56floundering under Elon Musk. It's really sad to see how he's
- 10:01completely destroyed the platform and maybe take a little
- 10:04bit of the traffic that you know would exist on Tumblr and maybe
- 10:09they'll go to XX is a pretty mainstream platform.
- 10:13It's doesn't feel maybe as intimidating to express yourself
- 10:18on that platform as it would to find different forums and things
- 10:21like that. I think that's why Tumblr was so
- 10:23successful with, you know, the nudity side of things is because
- 10:27it did feel like artistic expression as X is staying here
- 10:30and Tumblr was like a mainstream platform.
- 10:33It didn't feel like you were really like consuming or
- 10:36producing pornography like it. It felt like it was for a
- 10:40different purpose. And I think that's maybe what X
- 10:44is trying to do here based on this statement.
- 10:46I don't think it'll work. X is literally just this
- 10:50platform filled with illusory blue check men that are on this
- 10:55like feedback loop with each other of talking about how great
- 11:00they are and how Elon Musk is the best.
- 11:02And it's just like brain rot over there times 1000.
- 11:06It's almost unusable so yes, I feel like this is a play to get
- 11:10people back on side. I don't think it will work.
- 11:13I think it will further turn the platform into a completely
- 11:16obsolete side of the Internet, but we will see anyways guys
- 11:20that is it for mini scroll today.
- 11:22Thank you so much for listening. Please remember to rate review
- 11:25and subscribe. It helps me so much it helps me
- 11:27grow and I will talk to you guys.
- 11:29Oh my God, tomorrow. But tomorrow will be our
- 11:33miniseries. I'm so excited.
- 11:35So tomorrow we are launching our gaming miniseries.
- 11:37For the next 5 weeks, every Wednesday instead of mini
- 11:40scroll, you guys will get a 10 to 15 minute episode about a
- 11:43topic in gaming and how it relates to women in gaming.
- 11:46And I have an interview in each episode with different
- 11:49streamers, journalists, even gaming scholars.
- 11:53Very cool. Like people with doctorates in
- 11:57gaming. So it's very cool.
- 12:00I'm excited for you guys to hear that.
- 12:02So the first episode will go live tomorrow.
- 12:04Anyways guys, that's it, bye.
