Transcript
- 0:00You know, one of the hardest conversations that we have with
- 0:03Parkinson's isn't about meds or symptoms or even exercise.
- 0:08It's about driving. When is it the time to stop?
- 0:13How do you know when the risk is too high?
- 0:15Nobody ever tells you exactly. But today, I'm going to share
- 0:19the five biggest warning signs that might be time to give up
- 0:23the keys and stick with me until the end.
- 0:26Because not only will I share the changes that I personally
- 0:28noticed on my own driving, but we're adding something brand new
- 0:32to the podcast, a surprise segment that we've never done
- 0:36before. And you trust me, you do not
- 0:39want to miss it. Welcome to Living with
- 0:41Parkinson's, The Good, the Bad, and the Reality.
- 0:45Real talk, real life, real community with Bryce Perry.
- 0:50Let's begin. Hey friends, I'm Bryce and this
- 0:54is living with Parkinson's. The good, the bad and the
- 0:57reality. Now, I was diagnosed with
- 0:59Parkinson's back in 2010 when I was just 40 years old.
- 1:02So when I talk about symptoms and the pain and even things
- 1:06like driving, I'm not reading from a brochure.
- 1:09I'm living it every single day just like you.
- 1:13If you've been here before, thank you.
- 1:15This community means the world to me.
- 1:18And if you're brand new, welcome.
- 1:19This is a place where we keep it real.
- 1:21The laughs, the frustrations, and the little winds that get us
- 1:24through. And if you're sitting there
- 1:26wondering if it's getting close to your time to giving up
- 1:28driving or maybe you've already had to stop, well, stay with me
- 1:33because I'm going to give you not just the five warning signs,
- 1:36but also some practical tips to help you deal with that
- 1:39transition. So if that sounds like the kind
- 1:43of support you need, hit subscribe right now if you
- 1:45haven't already. Because none of us should have
- 1:47to figure out Parkinson's on our own.
- 1:50OK, now let's get into this. The first winding warning sign
- 1:55that it might be time to give up driving is slowed reaction times
- 1:58right? With Parkinson's, Hesitation
- 2:00sneaks in where we didn't used to be.
- 2:03You see a yellow light and instead of instance instantly
- 2:05deciding to stop or go, you freeze for a beat.
- 2:09Or you come up to a stop sign and your foot takes that extra
- 2:12second to hit the brake. On the road, those little delays
- 2:15can mean everything now. I've even caught myself
- 2:18hesitating more than I used to, even at simple green lights.
- 2:22And I'll admit, sometimes Carmen will say, hey, Bryce, are you
- 2:24waiting for an invitation? If you're noticing the same
- 2:28thing, drop a comment below. Your story might meet.
- 2:30Your story might help somebody else who's going through it too.
- 2:33And it also helps me know that I'm not alone in this.
- 2:36Now, if reaction time is one part of it, the second warning
- 2:40sign is even bigger. And that's coordination, just
- 2:44handling the car itself, turning the wheel, staying in your lane,
- 2:49even parking. Now for me, you know, I still
- 2:51drive and I drive at night, but I notice I move a lot slower and
- 2:56so does the car. And when I park my death depth
- 2:59perception, it isn't what it once was.
- 3:02There's not even a little bit of what it once was.
- 3:05You know, the other day I thought I nailed a perfect
- 3:08parking spot straight perfect between the yellow lines, right.
- 3:11Carmen looks out the window and she's like Bryce, you are two
- 3:14feet into the next base. Now, if you ever had your
- 3:17copilot call you out, let me know in the comments so I know
- 3:20that I'm not alone in this and and then that way too.
- 3:23Or if you haven't, if I don't get any comments, then I can
- 3:25give her some, some, some, you know what?
- 3:27But I just don't like being alone, do I?
- 3:31Anyway, give this video a like, if you're ever had one of those
- 3:34oops parking moments, please, please do.
- 3:37Anyway, another red flag is getting lost or disoriented.
- 3:41Now that's number three. You're driving somewhere you've
- 3:44been 100 times and suddenly you second guess where you're going.
- 3:47Now that's unsettling. I remember pulling into a
- 3:51grocery store lot once and then completely forgetting why I was
- 3:53there. I laughed later.
- 3:55But if it happens on the road it could be very dangerous, right?
- 4:00So brain fog and cognitive changes can sneak into your
- 4:02driving? Have you ever had that happen?
- 4:05If you have, please share it below because I know there's a
- 4:08lot of people that struggle with this and your comment could
- 4:10really help someone else feel normal about it.
- 4:13Now. The 4th warning sign.
- 4:15The 4th warning sign is close calls and mistakes.
- 4:18No, maybe it's clipping A curb or drifting out of the out of
- 4:22your lane or rolling through a stop sign.
- 4:24You swear that wasn't there, right?
- 4:26But we've all had those oops moments.
- 4:28I had one recently. I clipped the curb.
- 4:30Don't, please don't tell Carmen. I would, you know, if she saw
- 4:34that I would like try to like, don't worry.
- 4:36The the curb zigged, you know when it should have zagged and
- 4:39whatever. She probably wouldn't laugh, but
- 4:41it reminds me that these little things, they add up, right?
- 4:44And here's the truth, if you're noticing more close calls, it's
- 4:48this. Not bad luck.
- 4:49It's a warning light flashing on your dashboard.
- 4:52And I don't want to be the one to tell you, but I will be.
- 4:54And finally #5 what other people notice.
- 4:59Now, sometimes family and friends see things before we do.
- 5:03If your spouse, your kids, or even your buddies say maybe you
- 5:06shouldn't be driving as much, that's worth listening to.
- 5:10That doesn't mean they're attacking you.
- 5:11It means that they care. And if you're watching this as a
- 5:14care partner, let me know in the comments.
- 5:17Have you ever had to have that conversation?
- 5:19I'd love to hear how you handled it because many, many care
- 5:22partners have to handle and have the same conversations.
- 5:26And guess what? That brings us to the surprise I
- 5:28teased earlier. We're going to start something
- 5:30new here, and it's called the Carmen Care Partner Corner.
- 5:34Carmen's my wife and my care partner.
- 5:36Wife first, care partner second. Now it's a quick reflection for
- 5:40care partners, right? Because I know so many of you
- 5:44watch these videos too. Now here's what Carmen wanted me
- 5:48to share today. If it's time to talk about
- 5:51driving, don't dance around it. Be clear, be firm, and be kind.
- 5:57No, she always says giving up the keys isn't weakness, it's
- 6:00wisdom. It's about safety, not pride.
- 6:04And if I'm worried about your driving, I'm going to tell you,
- 6:07I'm going to tell you straight because I love you too much not
- 6:10to. Now that's Carmen.
- 6:12She negotiates for a living, right?
- 6:15So she doesn't mince words. Her advice for care partners is
- 6:18this lead with love, but don't tiptoe.
- 6:20If you come at it with honesty and heart, the message will land
- 6:24and they'll know it came from a place of love.
- 6:26Now that's pretty tough. But thanks, Carmen.
- 6:30I appreciate those times. And we're going to we're going
- 6:31to do this from a care partners corner every, every, every
- 6:34episode. And if you like that, say it in
- 6:36the comments, let me know that that was a good, that was good.
- 6:38You'd appreciate it and you'd like those little, little
- 6:41segments that we're going to have.
- 6:43But before we go any further, let's talk for a moment about
- 6:46the science behind all of this, OK, Parkinson's effects,
- 6:49dopamine, right? We know this.
- 6:50And dopamine isn't just about movement.
- 6:52And hopefully you know that by now as well if you've been
- 6:55following the podcast. Now, it also plays a role in
- 6:58processing speed, spatial awareness and multitasking.
- 7:02Dopamine. Did you know that that's why
- 7:04reaction time slow down and why judgement feels a little off
- 7:08now? You add in fatigue, stress and
- 7:10meds wearing off and suddenly driving becomes a whole
- 7:13different challenge. But here's the hopeful part.
- 7:17Researchers are making progress on cognitive treatments and even
- 7:20technology like assisted driving systems and down the road, self
- 7:24driving cars. So while it's hard now, the
- 7:26future looks brighter. And if you believe that's good
- 7:30news, hit the share button and let someone else know that, hey,
- 7:33there could be hope about driving again, or not losing it
- 7:37or not having to give it up. But in the meantime, let's get
- 7:39practical. What do you do if it's time to
- 7:42stop driving? OK, here's some tips.
- 7:45First, don't wait until it's an emergency.
- 7:48Keep a little journal of your driving experiences.
- 7:50And if you notice more close calls or hesitations, write them
- 7:52down. And that way, when it's time to
- 7:54talk to your doctor or your family, you've got real
- 7:56examples. OK.
- 7:58Second, plan for alternatives. This is huge.
- 8:02Think about rideshares, community shuttles, or even
- 8:04carpools through your local Parkinson's groups.
- 8:07You know, losing the keys doesn't mean losing
- 8:08independence. It just means reshaping it.
- 8:12Third, for care partners, don't bring this up mid drive.
- 8:16That's a recipe for disaster. Do it calmly at home, with love
- 8:19and patience. Carmen's told me more than once,
- 8:22if I have to talk to you about something serious, I'm not doing
- 8:24it while you've got the wheel in your hands.
- 8:27And she's right. 4th For those of us living with Parkinson's,
- 8:32reframe it. Instead of thinking I'm losing
- 8:35independence, think I'm choosing safety.
- 8:38That mental shift makes a world of difference.
- 8:42And finally, stay social. Sometimes giving up the keys.
- 8:46It feels like isolation, but this is where friends, family,
- 8:49community, the inner circle, if you're in it, that's where they
- 8:53come in. So if you're watching this and
- 8:55you've already stopped driving, share in the comments how you
- 8:58stay connected. That advice might change
- 9:00someone's life. OK, here's today's Bryce ISM for
- 9:05those of us living with Parkinson's.
- 9:08With Parkinson's, giving up the keys doesn't take away your
- 9:11independence. It proves your strength to
- 9:14protect it. And guess what?
- 9:17You made this far, You get a bonus.
- 9:19Bryce ISM and this one's for the care partners.
- 9:22If you're the one, if you're the one having the driving talk,
- 9:27remember this. You don't need to wrestle the
- 9:29keys out of their hands. Just remind them.
- 9:31The car insurance will probably do it for you.
- 9:33Ah, there you go. Now I want to hear from you.
- 9:38Have you noticed any of these warning signs in your own
- 9:40driving or maybe in a loved one? Drop your story in the comments
- 9:44and remember, I read everyone and I reply to everyone and a
- 9:48lot of people read the comments. So your words might help
- 9:52somebody else. And if you found this helpful,
- 9:54please hit that that button, that like button so YouTube
- 9:57knows to share it with others who might need it.
- 10:00And one last time, if you want to go deeper and where we can
- 10:03actually talk about these tough things, like in real time, like
- 10:06back and forth and have a talk about it, check out the inner
- 10:08circle. We meet live once a month and
- 10:10the conversation goes on every day in between.
