Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: This is Kiss Breakfast.
- 0:02Speaker 2: Yeah, good morning. You are on Kiss. Mikey, Amy, Gerard,
- 0:05Speaker 2: and a brand new show starting on Channel 9, One
- 0:08Speaker 2: Euro House. Darren Palmer is on there. This is all
- 0:12Speaker 2: about getting a house in Europe for a bargain. Well,
- 0:14Speaker 2: we're going to chat to him. He's here now.
- 0:16Speaker 3: Hello.
- 0:16Speaker 2: Good morning.
- 0:17Speaker 4: Morning.
- 0:17Speaker 1: Morning. What gave that away? The one euro house part or,
- 0:21Speaker 1: you know, the fact that we're buying a house that
- 0:24Speaker 1: would be cheap because it's one euro?
- 0:26Speaker 2: Well, can you explain it? Because, Amy, you were looking
- 0:28Speaker 2: at buying one when you were in Europe.
- 0:30Speaker 1: Were you?
- 0:30Speaker 5: Well, we just got back from Italy and my husband,
- 0:33Speaker 5: before we left, he was like, Italy, they've got this
- 0:35Speaker 5: big scheme on over there and they're basically encouraging.
- 0:38Speaker 6: People from all around the world to buy these. Are
- 0:42Speaker 6: they essentially like abandoned, run-down homes?
- 0:45Speaker 1: So here is the thing.
- 0:46Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 0:46Speaker 1: Two things that you just touched on and I love.
- 0:49Speaker 1: All around the world.
- 0:50Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 0:51Speaker 1: So the one Euro house scheme happens all over Sicily.
- 0:57Speaker 1: There's a few other places. Yeah. But also one Euro
- 1:00Speaker 1: house like as a show. Yeah. Started in the Netherlands
- 1:04Speaker 1: in 2018. It's been in six separate countries. They've made
- 1:09Speaker 1: one in Sweden, one in USA, one in UK, one
- 1:11Speaker 1: for us, and one in Italy for themselves. Amazing. So
- 1:14Speaker 1: it's been around for years and years and years because
- 1:18Speaker 1: everybody loves this idea of buying a one-euro house, which
- 1:23Speaker 1: is literally what it costs to purchase the property.
- 1:26Speaker 4: Yes.
- 1:27Speaker 1: Then there's, let's say, about 8,000 euros worth of red tape. Okay. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:33Speaker 1: Government's got to get paid. Stamp duty and all that. Yeah, or,
- 1:35Speaker 1: you know, just greasing the right wheels. I don't know
- 1:37Speaker 1: how it goes. Yeah, yeah. Martia, yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Literally. Hey,
- 1:42Speaker 1: I didn't say a word about that. I want to
- 1:44Speaker 1: go back there. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But, yeah, it's a
- 1:48Speaker 1: really inspiring idea that you can go into these beautiful
- 1:52Speaker 1: old homes. Some are like 400, 500 years old, some
- 1:57Speaker 1: of the stonework that's in the foundations of them. And
- 2:00Speaker 1: you can bring something back to life that hasn't been
- 2:04Speaker 1: lived in maybe for 30 or 40 years because young
- 2:07Speaker 1: people just leave these towns because they're very pretty. They're
- 2:10Speaker 1: very picturesque. But they may be a wee bit remote.
- 2:14Speaker 1: There's no work there. Kids, young people don't have a
- 2:19Speaker 1: lot of– opportunities there. So, you know, there's like a gelateria,
- 2:23Speaker 1: there's a pizzeria, there's like a couple of corner stores.
- 2:27Speaker 1: We had two hardware stores that were both closed at
- 2:30Speaker 1: the same time of the day after the siesta. But
- 2:34Speaker 1: there's a big sort of outflux, that's not the right word,
- 2:38Speaker 1: but of young people in these towns. So what they
- 2:42Speaker 1: do is sell the homes that are empty and have
- 2:43Speaker 1: been for a long time to people like us.
- 2:46Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 2:46Speaker 5: And is it true that you have to use, obviously
- 2:49Speaker 5: you can go over there and you can help refix
- 2:52Speaker 5: it and renovate it, but do you have to use
- 2:54Speaker 5: the local trades?
- 2:56Speaker 1: I mean, you would be dumb not to. Yeah, of course.
- 2:59Speaker 1: Because one, I speak a little bit of Italian, but
- 3:02Speaker 1: not a lot. Yeah. I'm sorry. And that's about the
- 3:11Speaker 1: extent of it. So try to converse without using locals.
- 3:16Speaker 1: You're not going to get very far. And also they
- 3:20Speaker 1: know how things work and they do things really differently
- 3:23Speaker 1: to us.
- 3:24Speaker 2: Okay, so if you renovate that home, you could live there,
- 3:27Speaker 2: no problems. Is there much around though? Like would it
- 3:30Speaker 2: be like, Us going and buying a $ 1 home in
- 3:33Speaker 2: Broken Hill or something like that.
- 3:34Speaker 1: Not at all.
- 3:36Speaker 2: Okay.
- 3:36Speaker 1: So what you'll see on the show tonight and every
- 3:39Speaker 1: single night for the next eight weeks, I guess, on
- 3:42Speaker 1: Channel 9.
- 3:42Speaker 7: Yep.
- 3:43Speaker 1: Is the amazing places that we get to go and see.
- 3:47Speaker 1: Like there's so many beautiful, like we went to Natural
- 3:52Speaker 1: Hot Springs. We went to jump in the ocean from
- 3:55Speaker 1: a yacht and There's a beautiful little town called Cefalu,
- 3:59Speaker 1: which is.
- 4:00Speaker 6: That's where I went.
- 4:00Speaker 1: I went to Cefalu. It's gorgeous. Va bene. It's absolutely beautiful.
- 4:07Speaker 1: I mean, and there's places all over Sicily that are
- 4:10Speaker 1: really gorgeous, like Agrigento. Have you heard of Agrigento?
- 4:14Speaker 5: This is where you stay in these little shacks, right?
- 4:18Speaker 1: Off... No. So Agrigento is the valley of the temples.
- 4:24Speaker 1: And because... It used to be like Roman and Greek
- 4:30Speaker 1: and Arabic. There's like a full version of, I forget
- 4:35Speaker 1: what it's called, the Parthion in Greece. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 4:40Speaker 1: I get confused between the Parthenon and the Parthion. Yes.
- 4:42Speaker 1: It's the Parthion, right, in Greece?
- 4:44Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 4:45Speaker 2: Sure, why not?
- 4:46Speaker 1: Anyway, there's a whole Parthion there and five others in
- 4:51Speaker 1: different levels of disrepute. You can just walk around them
- 4:54Speaker 1: and touch them. It's like it's… Full on. It's like
- 4:56Speaker 1: seeing it without all the crowds. It's awesome.
- 4:58Speaker 2: So would you recommend people go and do this?
- 5:00Speaker 1: Does it sound like it?
- 5:01Speaker 2: Yeah. I'm trying to work out what is the catch?
- 5:05Speaker 2: You're buying a home for a dollar.
- 5:07Speaker 1: The catch is this.
- 5:09Speaker 6: And their towns are being rebuilt with beautiful homes, right?
- 5:12Speaker 1: Yeah, but that's the benefit. The catch is this, right?
- 5:15Speaker 1: So generally people have a time period where they have
- 5:18Speaker 1: to renovate it.
- 5:19Speaker 2: Okay.
- 5:20Speaker 1: They are obliged to renovate it. You can't just leave it. Correct.
- 5:23Speaker 1: You can't buy it and land hold it. You have
- 5:25Speaker 1: to renovate it within a certain period of time. Then
- 5:30Speaker 1: it's hard. It's hard work. Yeah. Like I was just saying,
- 5:33Speaker 1: I started... work one day at 6 a.m. and finished
- 5:36Speaker 1: at 11 p.m. Yeah.
- 5:37Speaker 6: And you're on the tools as well, aren't you?
- 5:39Speaker 7: Yeah, mate.
- 5:39Speaker 1: Yeah. No, we were building stuff and DIYing stuff. You
- 5:44Speaker 1: know the block budgets? Yeah. Ain't that?
- 5:47Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 5:48Speaker 1: Hard work. Yeah. Hard work. We are buying things online.
- 5:53Speaker 1: I got my luster bronze tapware sent over to Sisley
- 5:58Speaker 1: from my tapware partner, Mia.
- 6:00Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 6:01Speaker 1: And I asked for it on like day two. Yeah.
- 6:04Speaker 1: And it got there just in time to be installed
- 6:07Speaker 1: into the house. And I was, like, pulling my hair
- 6:11Speaker 1: out because it was stuck in Italian customs. Yeah. And
- 6:13Speaker 1: so there's all these things that you can't control because
- 6:16Speaker 1: culturally things just run differently.
- 6:19Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 6:20Speaker 5: Well, I follow an account, and this is before I
- 6:23Speaker 5: knew your show was coming out, but I follow an account.
- 6:25Speaker 6: It's called The One Euro Dream.
- 6:28Speaker 5: And it's four Aussies and they have done exactly what
- 6:31Speaker 5: you're doing. And they've gone over to Sicily and is it?
- 6:36Speaker 5: I mean, obviously, Sicily is quite huge. Is it in, like,
- 6:39Speaker 5: a certain area where all these houses.
- 6:41Speaker 6: Are for sale?
- 6:42Speaker 1: Yeah, so over the six different countries that have all
- 6:46Speaker 1: done one-euro houses, they've all been in Sicily.
- 6:49Speaker 2: Oh, amazing, yeah.
- 6:50Speaker 1: Two of them were in Sambuca, which is not the drink,
- 6:54Speaker 1: but it's a place. There's been– anyway, I do a
- 6:58Speaker 1: little research. It's interesting. They're all in Sicily. The one-euro
- 7:03Speaker 1: sort of– project that everybody loves. Every single show that's
- 7:09Speaker 1: been done over the last 10 years, 8 years, has
- 7:13Speaker 1: been in Sicily. Well, there we go.
- 7:15Speaker 2: Well worth doing. And you can catch it, Shana Blaze
- 7:17Speaker 2: and Darren Palmer take the ultimate Italian gamble in one
- 7:21Speaker 2: Euro house. 8.40 tonight on 9 and 9. Now, mate,
- 7:25Speaker 2: while you're here, we want to take some calls. You
- 7:27Speaker 2: obviously know home styling.
- 7:30Speaker 1: Do I?
- 7:30Speaker 2: You do.
- 7:31Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 7:32Speaker 2: You are the best in the business. We've got some
- 7:34Speaker 2: people that want to ask you some homestyling questions. So,
- 7:38Speaker 2: stand by. We're going to do that next. 131065. You've
- 7:41Speaker 2: got a question for Darren Palmer? Yeah, and you will
- 7:43Speaker 2: know him from the block. Darren Palmer is joining us,
- 7:46Speaker 2: and he's got a brand new show, One Euro House,
- 7:48Speaker 2: starting on Channel 9 tonight. We thought we'd get some
- 7:52Speaker 2: homestyling dilemmas. You know your shit when it comes to this.
- 7:56Speaker 2: People are calling in on 131065. You'll be able to answer,
- 8:00Speaker 2: I'm sure. You ready to go, Darren?
- 8:01Speaker 1: I hope so. Wouldn't that be embarrassing if I couldn't
- 8:03Speaker 1: find the answer?
- 8:04Speaker 2: All right, Ava's on. Hey, what's your question for Darren?
- 8:08Speaker 1: Hi, Darren.
- 8:09Speaker 7: I've got a really big issue here. Me and my
- 8:12Speaker 7: boyfriend just recently moved in together and his big PlayStation
- 8:16Speaker 7: is so ugly, he's refusing to take it out of
- 8:19Speaker 7: the living room. and I don't know what to do.
- 8:22Speaker 2: Can we make it look prettier?
- 8:24Speaker 1: Have you considered a new boyfriend? I'm thinking about it. Mate,
- 8:29Speaker 1: that sounds like a lost cause. No, no, keep your boyfriend.
- 8:33Speaker 1: I'm sure he's lovely. I would put it out of sight.
- 8:37Speaker 1: I would try and find a cabinet and put it
- 8:41Speaker 1: inside there. Anything that is useful but not particularly beautiful
- 8:46Speaker 1: needs to be hidden, much like the reason why I
- 8:49Speaker 1: wear clothes sometimes.
- 8:51Speaker 2: All right, so a big cabinet. How do you feel about...
- 8:54Speaker 2: Because I love a TV on the wall. I don't
- 8:56Speaker 2: like TV cabinets anymore.
- 8:58Speaker 1: I concur. Yes? I wildly concur with you. But you
- 9:03Speaker 1: can still get a cabinet and hang it on the
- 9:05Speaker 1: wall because... PlayStations, et cetera. I mean, not everybody has
- 9:11Speaker 1: a DVD player anymore or a CD collection. We don't
- 9:15Speaker 1: need TV cabinets, right? No, you don't unless you've got
- 9:19Speaker 1: a PlayStation or some sort of bunch of things that
- 9:23Speaker 1: you want to plug into your TV, in which case
- 9:25Speaker 1: cable through your walls and you can actually locate them
- 9:29Speaker 1: away from the TV itself as well because most of
- 9:31Speaker 1: those things have the controllers. You don't need... Bloody cables
- 9:36Speaker 1: and stuff. So as long as it's sensible, you can
- 9:38Speaker 1: kind of hide stuff. Yeah.
- 9:40Speaker 2: And it looks way better just with a TV.
- 9:41Speaker 1: No kidding, man.
- 9:42Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 9:42Speaker 7: Flush.
- 9:43Speaker 2: Yeah, flush, flush, flush.
- 9:45Speaker 1: I like a bracket mount so you can pull it
- 9:47Speaker 1: off the.
- 9:47Speaker 6: Wall and turn it around, you know.
- 9:50Speaker 1: Et cetera. Or something that you could even close it
- 9:53Speaker 1: behind or like pull a painting down over.
- 9:56Speaker 2: Oh, like hidden.
- 9:57Speaker 1: Yeah, I love a hidden TV.
- 9:58Speaker 2: All right, Stacey.
- 9:59Speaker 1: Stacey. on.
- 10:00Speaker 2: What's your question for Darren Palmer?
- 10:02Speaker 3: Good morning, team. So I'm going to throw my husband
- 10:05Speaker 3: under the.
- 10:05Speaker 7: Bus here as well.
- 10:06Speaker 3: We recently renovated our house last year. So we're going
- 10:10Speaker 3: for this nice little coastal theme.
- 10:12Speaker 2: We both love the beach.
- 10:13Speaker 7: We both love the water.
- 10:14Speaker 3: However, he has this two-seater, bright red, that is fully stained,
- 10:20Speaker 3: 15-year-old couch that he will not part with.
- 10:23Speaker 1: Bright red. So we've got.
- 10:24Speaker 3: This beautiful theme, kind of trying to get that coastal
- 10:27Speaker 3: whites and light vibes, and now I've got this brown, red, stained,
- 10:32Speaker 3: hideous couch in the middle of our now spare room.
- 10:36Speaker 3: What do I do?
- 10:38Speaker 1: What you do is make a phone call and get
- 10:42Speaker 1: two strong men to take that thing out into your
- 10:45Speaker 1: backyard and then pour lighter fluid over it and burn it.
- 10:49Speaker 3: Mikey and Darren, what are you doing this afternoon?
- 10:52Speaker 1: I said big strong men and there's only one of
- 10:54Speaker 1: us here. It's not me.
- 10:56Speaker 2: No, it's not me either. The red, it's just like
- 10:59Speaker 2: if you're trying to do the right colours.
- 11:00Speaker 1: It's aggressive.
- 11:01Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 11:02Speaker 1: Oh, my God. I mean, are you trying to paint
- 11:05Speaker 1: a picture of... Anyway, I'm going to leave the pictures
- 11:09Speaker 1: alone in my mind. Red and coastal do not go together.
- 11:13Speaker 6: Absolutely not, yeah.
- 11:14Speaker 2: Could you reupholster? Is there any point doing that these days?
- 11:18Speaker 1: Look, there is one point in reupholstering thing these days
- 11:22Speaker 1: is if it's a high quality enough piece of furniture
- 11:25Speaker 1: and it doesn't go into landfill, then there's a fantastic
- 11:27Speaker 1: reason to reupholster something.
- 11:30Speaker 6: Reupholstering is actually quite expensive.
- 11:32Speaker 5: Like for what you pay to get it reupholstered, you
- 11:35Speaker 5: could probably just buy a new lounge.
- 11:36Speaker 1: That's the thing. So there's such effective, inexpensive furniture options
- 11:43Speaker 1: these days. Yeah. Burn that couch. Yeah, set it on fire.
- 11:47Speaker 2: All right, and now Jaden, you're on. What's your question, mate?
- 11:51Speaker 7: Hey, good morning, everyone.
- 11:52Speaker 1: How's everyone?
- 11:53Speaker 2: Good, mate.
- 11:55Speaker 7: Good, good. So, big dilemma.
- 11:57Speaker 4: My boyfriend is a massive, ridiculously Roosters fan. And because
- 12:02Speaker 4: of their win over the weekend, he wants to display
- 12:07Speaker 4: his ugly merch. So we're in an argument of whether
- 12:11Speaker 4: I should let him hang up or not. So should
- 12:13Speaker 4: I give in and let him hang it up or
- 12:16Speaker 4: should I stand my ground and say absolutely not?
- 12:19Speaker 2: Yeah, so what do you feel about football merch in the–
- 12:22Speaker 2: what room? In the garage.
- 12:25Speaker 1: I agree with Amy. Living room, kitchen. We've had three
- 12:31Speaker 1: phone calls, and I am just hearing three for three,
- 12:34Speaker 1: this is relationship problems. Because you people seem to be
- 12:38Speaker 1: choosing the wrong partners. Because, oh, my God.
- 12:41Speaker 3: Who?
- 12:41Speaker 7: Okay.
- 12:44Speaker 2: A lot of people would have footy merch.
- 12:45Speaker 1: A lot of people, but I'm sensing this is a gentleman.
- 12:48Speaker 1: He's talking about his gentleman boyfriend.
- 12:50Speaker 7: Yes.
- 12:51Speaker 1: So not a lot of the gays want to decorate
- 12:54Speaker 1: the lounge room with a rooster's merch. Let's be clear.
- 12:58Speaker 1: I'm not being general, but not this gay.
- 13:02Speaker 2: Of course.
- 13:03Speaker 1: And I think there is a time and a place
- 13:05Speaker 1: for anything that is very, very personal. So, for example...
- 13:10Speaker 1: Wedding photos, in my opinion, go in your bedroom, not
- 13:14Speaker 1: in your lounge room.
- 13:15Speaker 2: Interesting.
- 13:16Speaker 1: There is an idea of communal spaces and private spaces.
- 13:21Speaker 1: Communal spaces are where people live, congregate, and have guests.
- 13:25Speaker 1: Private spaces are the places for one or two people only.
- 13:30Speaker 1: If that one or two people have very passionate interests
- 13:34Speaker 1: in something, then... Keep it hidden because you don't know
- 13:38Speaker 1: what those interests might be. And generally, sometimes they're not
- 13:42Speaker 1: for the public.
- 13:43Speaker 6: They're not for everyone else.
- 13:44Speaker 2: So Rooster's merch, where should he put it? Garage or
- 13:46Speaker 2: like a study or something?
- 13:47Speaker 1: Wherever it gets his temperature going, that's the right place
- 13:52Speaker 1: to put it.
- 13:52Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 13:53Speaker 1: I would say go ham anywhere you like as long
- 13:57Speaker 1: as everybody doesn't have to look at it.
- 13:59Speaker 2: Okay, there we go.
- 13:59Speaker 1: There you go.
- 14:00Speaker 2: Thank you. Darren Palmer. There's one more. Oh, we got more.
- 14:03Speaker 7: Go on.
- 14:04Speaker 1: I've got more. I've got more of me.
- 14:07Speaker 2: Josie, hello.
- 14:09Speaker 7: It's Jose.
- 14:10Speaker 2: Oh, Jose. Well, I am sorry.
- 14:13Speaker 3: Josie.
- 14:16Speaker 2: I've never read that in my life. Jose, go for it.
- 14:21Speaker 5: Yes.
- 14:21Speaker 6: I live in my house for 33 years.
- 14:25Speaker 2: A cold draft.
- 14:25Speaker 1: Maybe you need an exorcism, mate. Maybe there's ghosts.
- 14:28Speaker 6: No, okay, so cold drafts, the things you want to.
- 14:30Speaker 1: Check clearly are The spaces around your windows, the spaces
- 14:52Speaker 1: around your doors, the gap underneath your door. You want
- 14:55Speaker 1: to check the gaps between your skirtings and your floorboards.
- 15:00Speaker 1: That's why people cork all these things because there can
- 15:03Speaker 1: be gaps between the floorboards and the walls and then
- 15:05Speaker 1: they can come in underneath the skirting boards as well.
- 15:09Speaker 1: You want to just look and check any gaps that
- 15:13Speaker 1: might need to be sealed that aren't there for ventilating
- 15:17Speaker 1: between the two sets of walls because that's important. And then, gosh,
- 15:23Speaker 1: heavy drapery will always create a barrier between the outside
- 15:28Speaker 1: cold and the inside cold. But sometimes if you are
- 15:32Speaker 1: living in an old home and it's double brick, they
- 15:34Speaker 1: are just cold.
- 15:35Speaker 5: And there's no insulation back in the olden days.
- 15:37Speaker 2: Nah.
- 15:39Speaker 1: It was, yes, in 1990. Yes.
- 15:42Speaker 2: Homes were built awfully though, weren't they? Up until probably
- 15:46Speaker 2: the 90s.
- 15:47Speaker 1: Yeah. Well, it's funny. Even 1930s, we've got lots of
- 15:50Speaker 1: double brick buildings in Sydney and they're quite cold in summer.
- 15:54Speaker 1: which is good, but very cold in winter. But, you know,
- 15:59Speaker 1: we do have these things called heaters now.
- 16:02Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 16:04Speaker 1: It's not to be flippant, but if you can find
- 16:07Speaker 1: an energy efficient way to heat these spaces, they also
- 16:10Speaker 1: retain heat fairly well. Yeah.
- 16:12Speaker 2: Good on you, mate. You can check it out tonight.
- 16:14Speaker 2: Shana Blaze, Darren Palmer, take the ultimate Italian gamble in
- 16:17Speaker 2: one Euro house tonight, 8.40 on Channel 9 and 9. Now,
- 16:23Speaker 2: Darren Palmer, thanks.
- 16:24Speaker 1: A lot, mate. Amazing. Just be kind because the budgets
- 16:26Speaker 1: aren't the same as the block, that's all I'm saying.
- 16:28Speaker 1: We will. Okay, okay.
