- 0:19Speaker 1: So what is his truly indecent proposal? Not say, is
- 0:24Speaker 1: to murder his wife?
- 0:26Speaker 3: Got some money and I need someone gone.
- 0:29Speaker 1: But is he being framed? I have done nothing wrong
- 0:32Speaker 1: that it's all a lie. Detectives are about to get
- 0:35Speaker 1: a double surprise.
- 0:36Speaker 4: And he introduced himself as the twin brother.
- 0:40Speaker 1: Then mask gunman storm a superban New York house, take
- 0:43Speaker 1: the homeowner's hostage, and then.
- 0:46Speaker 5: I need a police officer.
- 0:51Speaker 1: Twenty one year old college student Dimitri Hampton is ruthlessly killed.
- 0:55Speaker 1: God hold, someone takes someone life like that? Was it
- 0:59Speaker 1: a and him home invasion?
- 1:01Speaker 6: Do you think that your house was targeted?
- 1:03Speaker 1: A mystery woman comes forward exposing who was underneath the mask.
- 1:08Speaker 1: But one huge mistake is about to let a suspected
- 1:11Speaker 1: killer off the hook.
- 1:12Speaker 6: You physically fell to the floor.
- 1:14Speaker 7: Yeah, it's like another stab in that right now.

- 1:41Speaker 1: and money. We've got the new details on the outrageous
- 1:44Speaker 1: plot to kill so someone could collect a whole lot
- 1:47Speaker 1: of cash. He's a man willing to pay for a
- 1:51Speaker 1: murder for in.
- 1:52Speaker 5: A deal right now.
- 1:53Speaker 8: This is a goat.
- 1:54Speaker 1: She's a lady who suddenly finds herself as his hired gun.
- 1:59Speaker 1: This is all this undercover cop will put his life
- 2:03Speaker 1: on the line to try and stop it before it's
- 2:06Speaker 1: too late.
- 2:06Speaker 3: Immediately when he got the call.
- 2:09Speaker 1: And haul the kill her husband in for questioning.
- 2:12Speaker 7: I feel as that I have done nothing wrong.
- 2:17Speaker 1: His name is a fac Menejuala and he will never
- 2:20Speaker 1: forget meeting the woman who changed his life forever. According
- 2:24Speaker 1: to Belize, she's a call girl he found on Craigslist
- 2:28Speaker 1: who he paid all of forty dollars for a certain
- 2:31Speaker 1: sexual favor.
- 2:32Speaker 4: Afterwards, he offered her additional ways to make money.
- 2:36Speaker 1: This lady of the night may have heard some unusual requests,
- 2:40Speaker 1: but this one takes the cake.
- 2:42Speaker 4: He referenced that he wanted to off somebody and this
- 2:46Speaker 4: would be beneficial to both of their needs.
- 2:49Speaker 1: So who does he want dead?
- 2:51Speaker 4: Originally he referred to the victim in this case as
- 2:54Speaker 4: a roommate, then it turned into a girlfriend. Then he
- 2:58Speaker 4: finally admitted that the target was in fact his wife.
- 3:02Speaker 1: His wife, the mother of his three year old son,
- 3:06Speaker 1: the woman he has cut out of their honeymoon. Photo
- 3:08Speaker 1: text messages reveal a bitter custody battle, his wife threatening
- 3:12Speaker 1: to take their son and leave the country, writing at
- 3:16Speaker 1: the airport, goodbye, my phone is going dark. Shoe, things
- 3:20Speaker 1: can't be any other way, af Fok writes back. Please
- 3:23Speaker 1: don't go with him, Please just make a mature decision.
- 3:27Speaker 1: You're taking him away from his father. Police say he
- 3:30Speaker 1: desperately wants sole custody of the boy and his wife gone.
- 3:35Speaker 4: There was the financial aspect where he was in debt.
- 3:38Speaker 4: There was a million dollar life insurance policy on the victim.
- 3:42Speaker 1: So is this call girl the kind of girl who
- 3:45Speaker 1: would kill a man's wife. Well, for fifteen thousand dollars
- 3:49Speaker 1: paid in installments, it's a deal sort of.
- 3:53Speaker 4: Her initial idea was possibly duping him after obtaining a
- 3:56Speaker 4: million up front cut.
- 3:57Speaker 1: Run Please say that over these of several meetings, he
- 4:01Speaker 1: lays out every detail of how he wants the job
- 4:03Speaker 1: done at the couple's gated community townhouse in Laurel, Maryland.
- 4:09Speaker 4: He gave specific instructions how to make entry where his door.
- 4:12Speaker 1: Was man asullas thought of everything, even to the point
- 4:16Speaker 1: where he's telling her, you know, if you wear yoga pants,
- 4:19Speaker 1: they're more flexible and you'll be able to move around more.
- 4:22Speaker 1: He even considers having her do the job with a car.
- 4:26Speaker 4: I think at one point you might have suggested a
- 4:28Speaker 4: runner over, but.
- 4:29Speaker 1: The unlikely lady killer from Craigslist has to think of
- 4:32Speaker 1: her own safety too. In later meetings, cops say she
- 4:36Speaker 1: actually records the conversation on her cell phone in case
- 4:40Speaker 1: something should happen to her.
- 4:41Speaker 7: I want's swing by my house, just like going to
- 4:43Speaker 7: show you a couple of things.
- 4:44Speaker 8: I really really really want you to know that I
- 4:48Speaker 8: will be a regular source of inform you and then
- 4:51Speaker 8: I'll hitch you up with the mumpstone going to you
- 4:55Speaker 8: once I do this deal to give you money. Right here,
- 4:58Speaker 8: we officially announced that our helped up.
- 5:00Speaker 5: We're in a deal right now.
- 5:02Speaker 1: This I gotcha. He's intoxicated with dreams of a dead wife.
- 5:08Speaker 1: When get this, they actually get pulled over at a
- 5:12Speaker 1: sobriety checkpoint. What the hell?
- 5:17Speaker 9: What happened here?
- 5:19Speaker 5: Reason I stop?
- 5:20Speaker 6: You get a hit? Light out?
- 5:21Speaker 10: Are you aware of that? Yeah, that's why I have
- 5:22Speaker 10: my flashes on the bottom on.
- 5:24Speaker 1: I do know that it's out. So let me give
- 5:26Speaker 1: you my license right now.
- 5:27Speaker 11: Give me.
- 5:30Speaker 3: That's really it is too much.
- 5:32Speaker 2: They have light on on both sides.
- 5:33Speaker 5: They're blocking this whole street right now.
- 5:36Speaker 7: The cool I gotcha, Let it go out, grab a flight.
- 5:40Speaker 3: So what I did today is I just gave you
- 5:42Speaker 3: a repair order.
- 5:43Speaker 8: So you have ten days to get it done and
- 5:44Speaker 8: get it signed.
- 5:45Speaker 5: We're sure your cooperation.
- 5:46Speaker 1: Have a good night, but not so fast. Suddenly, as
- 5:50Speaker 1: they pull away, the officers back at the window.
- 5:55Speaker 2: Are you serious, man?
- 5:57Speaker 8: Just let you know you got a break.
- 5:59Speaker 10: Lay out of passion.
- 6:00Speaker 1: Okay, I'm gonna I'll get that look at too, thank you.
- 6:04Speaker 1: But the call girls slash hit woman is rattle.
- 6:08Speaker 2: This is all too much.
- 6:10Speaker 1: I'm beyond uncomfortable. Next reality hits home for the would
- 6:15Speaker 1: be killer and she's about to make a decision that
- 6:18Speaker 1: stuns even the police.
- 6:20Speaker 4: Anytime a story comes up like this, it is hard
- 6:22Speaker 4: to believe.
- 6:23Speaker 1: And an identical twin brother has cops wondering is there
- 6:27Speaker 1: a double cross in the works.
- 6:29Speaker 4: One of the issues that we had was being able
- 6:31Speaker 4: to prove that this is mister Manezuela. It's not the
- 6:33Speaker 4: twin brother that's doing all of this.
- 6:37Speaker 1: We're back with more on the cheating husband who meets
- 6:40Speaker 1: a girl on Craigslist, but he's got more in his
- 6:42Speaker 1: mind than hooking up. It's more like taking out. Oh fuck,
- 6:47Speaker 1: Manajuala wants his wife dead.
- 6:49Speaker 12: He had plans in place. It was no doubt in
- 6:52Speaker 12: our minds that he was wanting to be successful in this, and.
- 6:55Speaker 1: Now the call girl he's hired not for sex but
- 6:58Speaker 1: to kill his wife, is having second thoughts. At one
- 7:02Speaker 1: point during their harrowing traffic stop, she prays in fear,
- 7:06Speaker 1: even while holding the two hundred dollars down payment for
- 7:09Speaker 1: murder in her hand. Police say she first planned to
- 7:18Speaker 1: take that upfront money and run, but now she's having
- 7:22Speaker 1: an attack of conscience about leaving manage while his wife
- 7:25Speaker 1: and child in mortal danger.
- 7:27Speaker 12: She had nothing to gain from it by reporting it,
- 7:29Speaker 12: and she was in our area doing an illegal activity.
- 7:32Speaker 1: In an incredible turn of events, she bolsters her courage,
- 7:36Speaker 1: takes the plunge, and goes to police.
- 7:39Speaker 4: It's hard to believe, but she produced. She actually showed
- 7:41Speaker 4: us text messages and the audio recording that she had done,
- 7:47Speaker 4: which obviously complete credibility to her story.
- 7:50Speaker 1: Comps need to use her to set a trap, but
- 7:53Speaker 1: also to keep her out of danger while going after
- 7:56Speaker 1: manage Walla, and they're on a risky learning curve with
- 7:59Speaker 1: no room for error.
- 8:00Speaker 12: Murder for hire cases are extremely rare. I had never
- 8:03Speaker 12: seen that before, and this was the first one we'd
- 8:06Speaker 12: ever worked.
- 8:07Speaker 1: And they have to come up with something quick before
- 8:09Speaker 1: he finds someone else to kill his wife.
- 8:12Speaker 4: She was advised to suggest that she had a cousin
- 8:15Speaker 4: that could do the job. He's not in town at
- 8:19Speaker 4: the moment, but he will be coming up soon.
- 8:21Speaker 1: The supposed cousin is actually an undercover cop and it
- 8:25Speaker 1: will be his first time in a murder for hire
- 8:27Speaker 1: sting as well.
- 8:29Speaker 12: Make no mistake the undercover officer in this case. You
- 8:31Speaker 12: know he was putting his life in danger for the
- 8:33Speaker 12: protection of this woman and her child.
- 8:36Speaker 1: Please are certain that Manejoala will not hesitate to active
- 8:39Speaker 1: threaten if.
- 8:40Speaker 12: He changes his mind or if he thinks he's exposed,
- 8:42Speaker 12: and then the one person he's going to get rid
- 8:44Speaker 12: of is the person he's telling this information to, which
- 8:46Speaker 12: in this case with the undercover officer.
- 8:47Speaker 1: Now the courageous call girl is in no less danger,
- 8:51Speaker 1: but means Manejoala one last time alone, he agrees to
- 8:55Speaker 1: meet her cousin.
- 8:56Speaker 4: The very next day, we had the from a text
- 9:00Speaker 4: mister Manzuela stating that her cousin had arrived and that
- 9:03Speaker 4: he wished to meet with mister Manezhula.
- 9:06Speaker 1: We sat down with the undercover cop posing as the
- 9:08Speaker 1: hitman cousin and was agreed to keep him undercovered.
- 9:12Speaker 3: I knew it was gonna be a challenge, but you know,
- 9:15Speaker 3: I was definitely up for it and looking forward to him.
- 9:19Speaker 1: At their first meeting in the undercovers car, Manuala gets
- 9:22Speaker 1: down to business quickly.
- 9:24Speaker 10: I got some money, Okay, I need some money going.
- 9:30Speaker 1: Lock on Helen know Later Manajulla breaks out his phone
- 9:35Speaker 1: and shows the undercover a real home video of exactly
- 9:39Speaker 1: where to find his wife in the house. It's a
- 9:42Speaker 1: literal roadmap to murder.
- 9:44Speaker 3: He kind of opened the door, walked up the steps,
- 9:47Speaker 3: showed me that he laid on the left side of
- 9:48Speaker 3: the bed, and this is where I could find it.
- 9:50Speaker 10: It needs it like an accident, like a house for
- 9:53Speaker 10: operator or anything else you suggest, girlfriend.
- 10:01Speaker 12: I mean, just.
- 10:05Speaker 1: Manage Wallace says he'll take his son to the boy's
- 10:08Speaker 1: grandparents on the night of the murder, but he will
- 10:10Speaker 1: be there himself when it happens, and he wants to
- 10:12Speaker 1: be a victim to anything to make it look convincing.
- 10:17Speaker 13: Event Yeah, even even like dabbing the arm or.
- 10:20Speaker 1: Like the gods. At another meeting, a detective inside the
- 10:24Speaker 1: unmarked car follows the two men as they take a
- 10:27Speaker 1: look at Manage Walla's house.
- 10:29Speaker 7: Give me two hundred feet up.
- 10:31Speaker 1: That's the gated community.
- 10:32Speaker 8: The only way to get chance.
- 10:33Speaker 1: They Once you do job, come back up to the
- 10:36Speaker 1: woods over here.
- 10:38Speaker 8: To get parked.
- 10:40Speaker 1: And he'd also like the killer cousin to bring along
- 10:43Speaker 1: a can of spray paint for some finishing touches on
- 10:46Speaker 1: his way out the door, something to make it look
- 10:49Speaker 1: like a hate crime.
- 10:50Speaker 3: I believe he's Muslim, and he talked about spray paying
- 10:54Speaker 3: something on the walls as well too, to kind of
- 10:57Speaker 3: make it seem realistic.
- 10:59Speaker 1: But detective are about to be thrown a curveball. A
- 11:03Speaker 1: fox identical twin brother rsh seen here at his wedding
- 11:07Speaker 1: in the arms of three women, could arsh be setting
- 11:11Speaker 1: up a twin or vice versa. It gives a whole
- 11:13Speaker 1: new meaning to the term dead ringer.
- 11:16Speaker 12: We didn't know if we were dealing with some kind of,
- 11:18Speaker 12: you know, weird family issue here or something like that.
- 11:21Speaker 12: I don't think there was any way we weren't going
- 11:23Speaker 12: to do this without making sure that, you know, we
- 11:25Speaker 12: didn't have the twin brother trying to set his brother
- 11:28Speaker 12: up for a crime.
- 11:29Speaker 1: In fact, that becomes a major issue in the sting,
- 11:32Speaker 1: making sure they had eyes on the twin while they
- 11:35Speaker 1: went after a Fox. During a third meeting with the
- 11:38Speaker 1: undercover manageuall forks over a one hundred dollars advance. It
- 11:43Speaker 1: seals the deal and the fate of his ill begotten
- 11:45Speaker 1: murder plans.
- 11:46Speaker 3: Gave me the money.
- 11:47Speaker 1: He got out the car, I pulled out, Cops swoop
- 11:51Speaker 1: in and make the arrest.
- 11:53Speaker 12: I was there when he was taken into Cussidy, and
- 11:55Speaker 12: he was shocked and very upset. I think he thought
- 11:59Speaker 12: he was going to get away with it.
- 12:01Speaker 1: Back at the police station, cops have a talk with
- 12:04Speaker 1: Manage Walla.
- 12:05Speaker 4: What I have to do here is tell you the
- 12:06Speaker 4: most of your starts against your solicitation and commit money.
- 12:09Speaker 10: Wow, I feel as if I have done nothing wrong
- 12:12Speaker 10: and everything that has gone on so far that in
- 12:16Speaker 10: your investigation is all fabricated. It's all a lie.
- 12:20Speaker 12: Do you think fabricating and lying? I was fabricating In line,
- 12:23Speaker 12: He's trying to explain it as that this was a
- 12:25Speaker 12: game he was playing and that he was just setting
- 12:27Speaker 12: this up.
- 12:28Speaker 4: He was going to be the big hero that came
- 12:30Speaker 4: to the rescue and saved his wife, and I was
- 12:32Speaker 4: going to help their marriage. That plan was completely not feasible.
- 12:36Speaker 10: My family and I we have a beautiful relationship, We
- 12:39Speaker 10: have a beautiful family. Everything is perfect in my life
- 12:42Speaker 10: right now.
- 12:42Speaker 1: Talking about mistake obviously obvious. But Manage Walla lawyers up
- 12:48Speaker 1: detective sit down with his wife and tell her the
- 12:51Speaker 1: whole story. Despite their bitter custody battle, she could not
- 12:54Speaker 1: believe the man she married wanted her dead.
- 12:57Speaker 4: Her reaction was just absolutely shocked. She had no idea
- 13:01Speaker 4: her life was basically being turned upside down in an instant.
- 13:04Speaker 4: It took a lot of convincing to get her to
- 13:06Speaker 4: understand what was going on. She really didn't believe us,
- 13:09Speaker 4: and I don't blame her. I probably wouldn't believe me either, But.
- 13:13Speaker 1: Even now, the surprises keep coming. Cops wanted to keep
- 13:16Speaker 1: Manage Walla up behind bars until his trial, and they're
- 13:19Speaker 1: worried about that twin brother.
- 13:21Speaker 4: During bail review process, there was a concern that he
- 13:25Speaker 4: might be able to actually take his brother's identity and
- 13:27Speaker 4: flee the country.
- 13:29Speaker 1: But Detective Brannigan is stunned to find Manage Walla free
- 13:32Speaker 1: in the courthouse even as he's trying to keep him
- 13:35Speaker 1: in jail.
- 13:36Speaker 4: I looked at him, and how is how did he
- 13:39Speaker 4: make bail already?
- 13:40Speaker 1: How is he?
- 13:40Speaker 4: I was very confused and I actually had to went
- 13:43Speaker 4: up and introduce myself. Then he introduced himself as the
- 13:48Speaker 4: twin brother.
- 13:49Speaker 1: It's harsh. That's a relief, and cops say he was
- 13:53Speaker 1: never implicated in any wrongdoing. But while being held manage
- 13:58Speaker 1: Wallaw also gets a visit for from a longtime secret
- 14:01Speaker 1: girlfriend who also gets the shock of her life.
- 14:04Speaker 12: She had no clue he was married, and it was
- 14:07Speaker 12: kind of odd because even when she found out, she
- 14:09Speaker 12: was still trying to figure a way to stand by him.
- 14:12Speaker 1: Later, in front of a judge, manage Walla never tells
- 14:15Speaker 1: that story about fabricating the crime.
- 14:17Speaker 12: He pled guilty to solicitation commit first degree murder, in
- 14:21Speaker 12: which he was sentenced to fifty years suspend all but twenty.
- 14:25Speaker 1: In the end, it's the result of some fine police
- 14:27Speaker 1: work and a tip from a call girl with a conscience.
- 14:31Speaker 12: She could have never even reported it and we would
- 14:34Speaker 12: have been an underwiser. There's no doubt in my mind
- 14:36Speaker 12: that if she hadn't reported this, his wife would have
- 14:39Speaker 12: ended up deceased.
- 14:40Speaker 1: And along with that good samaritan, cops say they also
- 14:45Speaker 1: caught a little bit of a lucky break. While talking
- 14:47Speaker 1: to the informant, managed Walla confessed that this was not
- 14:51Speaker 1: his first time he tried to hire someone to kill
- 14:53Speaker 1: his wife, telling the undercover officer he even provided that
- 14:57Speaker 1: person a truck to commit the act. The hired man
- 15:00Speaker 1: took the truck and ran, never to be seen again.
- 15:05Speaker 1: Coming up a college student destined to serve and protect, do.
- 15:09Speaker 6: You know why he was passionate about criminal justice?
- 15:11Speaker 14: He wanted to help his community in other people's.
- 15:14Speaker 1: Command until a violent home invasion ends in gunfire. Oh
- 15:21Speaker 1: my god, this is the man police say pulled that trigger.
- 15:27Speaker 1: But he is a legal mistake about to blow the
- 15:30Speaker 1: whole case.
- 15:31Speaker 13: Someone got away with murder.
- 15:33Speaker 1: We're breaking news on the controversial murder of Dmitri Hampton
- 15:37Speaker 1: that's coming up. Welcome back to Crime Watching Daily. It's
- 15:43Speaker 1: a word we use often, justice, defined as the quality
- 15:47Speaker 1: of being fair and reasonable. Well, when it comes to
- 15:50Speaker 1: the murder of Dmitri Hampton, there's certainly nothing fair and
- 15:53Speaker 1: reasonable going on, that's for sure. Our special legal correspondent
- 15:57Speaker 1: Amy Dash as the details.
- 15:59Speaker 8: Chris.
- 15:59Speaker 6: It's there's a story of murder and heartache with an
- 16:02Speaker 6: almost unbelievable ending, one that cost a lawyer his job.
- 16:08Speaker 7: I wanted to keep them safe.
- 16:11Speaker 1: They are the painful sights and sounds of those who
- 16:14Speaker 1: loved a twenty one year old Dmitri Hampton.
- 16:17Speaker 6: He had bold and what did he talk to you
- 16:20Speaker 6: about wanting to become and do with his life?
- 16:23Speaker 1: The main thing he said was military. Dmitri's family tells
- 16:27Speaker 1: our special legal correspondent Emy Dash his dream was to
- 16:30Speaker 1: join the Air Force and work in criminal justice.
- 16:33Speaker 6: Do you know why he was passionate about criminal justice.
- 16:35Speaker 14: There's a lot of violence out there that's going on.
- 16:38Speaker 14: So he wanted to help to his community, in other
- 16:40Speaker 14: people's community.
- 16:41Speaker 1: And it made sense. Dmitri was raised to serve and protect.
- 16:46Speaker 11: When my mother died, he said to me, Mommy, who's
- 16:48Speaker 11: going to keep the family together now? And I said,
- 16:51Speaker 11: you are, That's your responsibility, Dmeitri.
- 16:55Speaker 1: Little did Dmitri know that call to duty to protect
- 16:58Speaker 1: his own family would come sooner than expected, and it
- 17:02Speaker 1: would cost this young hero his life.
- 17:05Speaker 11: Most precious thing that we had, they took it from you,
- 17:11Speaker 11: They took it.
- 17:15Speaker 1: All was quiet inside Letitia Diego's modest home in Flanders,
- 17:18Speaker 1: New York. It was frigid mid January.
- 17:22Speaker 6: Were you sleeping? I was?
- 17:24Speaker 2: It was like three o'clock in the morning.
- 17:26Speaker 1: Letitia's boyfriend, Eric Walker was by her side down the hall.
- 17:30Speaker 1: Letitia's sixteen year old daughter was tucked safely in her bed. Dimitri,
- 17:35Speaker 1: Letitia's cousin was still away, His girlfriend, Frances was down
- 17:39Speaker 1: in the basement of the home. In a split second,
- 17:42Speaker 1: a peaceful night is shattered by horrifying sounds of terror.
- 17:46Speaker 2: Let me kicked my door in, came in the house,
- 17:49Speaker 2: help myself from my boyfriend hostage.
- 17:51Speaker 6: Skia masks yeah.
- 17:55Speaker 1: A raging, masked invader points a gun at Letitia and
- 17:58Speaker 1: her boyfriend Eric.
- 18:00Speaker 7: Me, where is it? Where is it? That's what I said,
- 18:03Speaker 7: Where is what?
- 18:04Speaker 2: He's shaking his gun. I just covered my face with
- 18:06Speaker 2: the pillow. I thought he was gonna shoot me. And
- 18:09Speaker 2: then I hear someone in the other room screaming, don't move,
- 18:12Speaker 2: don't move. I'm screaming because I thought it was my
- 18:16Speaker 2: daughter too. My sixteen year old was home at the time.
- 18:20Speaker 1: But the teen is huddled in her bedroom closet. She
- 18:24Speaker 1: stays quiet in the basement. Dmitri's girlfriend francis, here's all
- 18:29Speaker 1: the chaos upstairs and calls out Dmitri's name, inadvertently giving
- 18:33Speaker 1: herself away to the gunman.
- 18:35Speaker 5: That this fella went down the stairs and pointed a
- 18:38Speaker 5: shotgun at her and told her to come upstairs and
- 18:41Speaker 5: sit on the living room couch.
- 18:44Speaker 1: From the kitchen, the sounds of a knockdown, drag out fight.
- 18:47Speaker 5: There was an immense physical struggle that had occurred. There
- 18:51Speaker 5: was a door knock down.
- 18:53Speaker 1: It's Dmitri cornered by one of the armed intruders, but
- 18:56Speaker 1: unwilling to give in, he fights to pry the weapon
- 18:59Speaker 1: from the gunman's hands.
- 19:01Speaker 2: I heard all of the yelling and rumbling around.
- 19:05Speaker 1: Then the distinct and deafening sounds of gunfire, and a
- 19:10Speaker 1: voice crying out from the kitchen, a painfully familiar voice.
- 19:15Speaker 2: The next thing I heard was Dmitri yelling. I still
- 19:19Speaker 2: have my face buried in a pillow. When I heard
- 19:22Speaker 2: Dmitri yelling, and he came in a room. He was saying,
- 19:25Speaker 2: call the police. I reached out for him. It's home,
- 19:32Speaker 2: to just sit down.
- 19:33Speaker 6: Had they left at that point?
- 19:35Speaker 14: Whoever was in the house was gone.
- 19:37Speaker 1: It was only then that Letitia realized her beloved cousin
- 19:41Speaker 1: had been shot, blood gushing from his chest.
- 19:47Speaker 5: Yes, I need a police officer, I need somebody here.
- 19:52Speaker 4: Oh my god, okay reading Yes.
- 19:58Speaker 1: Dmitri would hang on to life all the way to
- 20:01Speaker 1: the hospital.
- 20:03Speaker 7: My mom quote me, says Dmitri staking me at the hospital.
- 20:10Speaker 6: What are you thinking at that time?
- 20:12Speaker 7: I'm hoping that he's going to be all right.
- 20:15Speaker 6: You pray yeah.
- 20:18Speaker 1: But minutes later, the valiant young man would take his
- 20:20Speaker 1: final breath. Dmitri Hampton died trying to be the protector
- 20:24Speaker 1: he had promised his mother he would be.
- 20:27Speaker 14: He was gonna fight, and that's what he did.
- 20:30Speaker 6: Do you think that he was fighting to protect you
- 20:34Speaker 6: and your daughter?
- 20:35Speaker 7: I know he was.
- 20:36Speaker 5: He loved his family.
- 20:37Speaker 11: He was gonna do what he had to do.
- 20:40Speaker 1: Coming up, the alleged killing crew is unmasked by police.
- 20:44Speaker 1: Their depraved deeds.
- 20:45Speaker 11: A family affair, two brothers, a sister, and a step son,
- 20:50Speaker 11: all criptals, But.
- 20:52Speaker 1: The wheels of justice take a crushing wrong turn.
- 20:55Speaker 7: Another stab in the back, another stab in.
- 20:57Speaker 1: Nor Dmitri Hampton had goals to serve and protect his community,
- 21:06Speaker 1: and in his last moments alive, he did just that,
- 21:08Speaker 1: protecting his family from several armed men who stormed into
- 21:12Speaker 1: their home. Our Special Legu correspondent Amy dashes back now
- 21:15Speaker 1: with more on the search for the trigger man and
- 21:18Speaker 1: his accomplishment. Dmitri Hampton fallen victim to the very kind
- 21:23Speaker 1: of senseless violence. He's so despised.
- 21:25Speaker 6: What would you say that your brother.
- 21:27Speaker 14: Stood for positivity, togetherness in the community. He always wanted
- 21:31Speaker 14: to help.
- 21:33Speaker 1: He was just twenty one, a college student, destined for
- 21:36Speaker 1: a career in the air force and criminal justice, but
- 21:39Speaker 1: cut down in a violent home invasion.
- 21:44Speaker 11: Listen to me, do you know who the person was not.
- 21:47Speaker 6: Jenny Chamber were masked a gun and there was a gentleman.
- 21:54Speaker 1: Dimitri's family shares their heartbreak with our special legal correspondent
- 21:58Speaker 1: to Amy dash Leon here.
- 22:03Speaker 3: I couldn't believe. How the hell excuse me, god, how
- 22:07Speaker 3: would someone take someone life like that?
- 22:10Speaker 6: Do you think that this was random? Or do you
- 22:13Speaker 6: think your house was targeted?
- 22:14Speaker 2: Eric had hit the lotto a couple of times, so
- 22:17Speaker 2: they thought the money was in there.
- 22:20Speaker 1: Eric Walker, Letitia's boyfriend had hit the lottery, But was
- 22:24Speaker 1: there something more sinister that would he listed a home invasion?
- 22:28Speaker 5: Eric Walker himself admitted that he had dealt drugs.
- 22:32Speaker 6: Did he say crap?
- 22:34Speaker 1: Yes? But Walker insisted his drug dealing was all the past.
- 22:39Speaker 6: Do you know if your boyfriend was dealing drugs out
- 22:41Speaker 6: of the house, this is a ruler.
- 22:43Speaker 2: No, that would make my house a crack house. Nobody
- 22:46Speaker 2: was selling anything.
- 22:48Speaker 1: Even police radio exchanges that night confirmed there was no
- 22:52Speaker 1: evidence of dealing.
- 22:53Speaker 7: This is a drug house, burgoing drug where the history
- 22:56Speaker 7: in Nicole doesn't show.
- 23:01Speaker 1: Any real drug activity. As for Dimitri, there's no obvious
- 23:06Speaker 1: reason he would be the intended target.
- 23:09Speaker 4: We don't have anything on him.
- 23:10Speaker 8: He was never a sip.
- 23:12Speaker 1: Really, with no visual witness identification and an uncertain motive,
- 23:18Speaker 1: the mass men in black remain in the dark. But
- 23:22Speaker 1: what if it was sound not sight that would provide
- 23:26Speaker 1: a clue police get a break. The teen who hid
- 23:29Speaker 1: in the closet during the home invasion said she recognized
- 23:32Speaker 1: the voice of one of the assailants, a man she
- 23:34Speaker 1: knew as Matthew Messiah Booker.
- 23:38Speaker 6: How did your daughter know him?
- 23:40Speaker 2: I don't know what kind of relationship they had. I
- 23:42Speaker 2: just heard that she was hanging out with him.
- 23:46Speaker 6: So did he know where you lived?
- 23:48Speaker 1: He did, and it wouldn't be long before investigators say
- 23:51Speaker 1: they could place Messiah Booker near the scene of the crime.
- 23:55Speaker 6: Police had reason to believe that his cell phone was
- 23:58Speaker 6: pinging off of a tower. You're the home at the
- 24:01Speaker 6: time of the murder?
- 24:01Speaker 1: Yes? Around town, the rumor mill was repeatedly churning out
- 24:06Speaker 1: the name Messiah Booker as the killer. Dimiti's mother remembers
- 24:10Speaker 1: one tortureis anonymous phone call.
- 24:13Speaker 11: I had the phone to my air and they said
- 24:16Speaker 11: I can't get involved personally killed. Your son is Matthew Booker.
- 24:19Speaker 11: They call him Messiah, and I dropped the phone on
- 24:22Speaker 11: the floor I was screaming to the top of my head.
- 24:26Speaker 1: But there's still not enough to make an arrest until
- 24:29Speaker 1: a surprise witness blows the lid off the case.
- 24:32Speaker 5: My name is Onnka Walker.
- 24:35Speaker 1: Oneika Walker was Messiah Booker's girlfriend. She was there that night.
- 24:40Speaker 5: She spoke about a planning of a burglary that she
- 24:45Speaker 5: had witnessed.
- 24:46Speaker 1: In fact, Oneika said she even drove one of the
- 24:49Speaker 1: getaway cars the night of the murder.
- 24:51Speaker 5: In terms of the prosecution theory, she put the code
- 24:56Speaker 5: defendants and herself at the timeplace of the.
- 24:59Speaker 1: Offense from court transcripts. Messiah came running into my car.
- 25:04Speaker 1: I kind of asked him, like what happened. Messiah and
- 25:07Speaker 1: this guy were tussling back and forth. Messiah said that
- 25:09Speaker 1: he pulled the trigger. He said that he shot him
- 25:13Speaker 1: and he saw blood. In exchange for her testimony, Oneika
- 25:19Speaker 1: was charged with misdemeanor hindering prosecution, but four others would
- 25:23Speaker 1: face charges of murder and burglary. Messiah Booker, his brother,
- 25:28Speaker 1: Cory Wallace, his sister Danielle Hall, and Wallace's step son
- 25:32Speaker 1: Michael Parrish. The motive armed robbery. Corey Wallace would rat
- 25:38Speaker 1: out his sibling, Messiah as the shooter. For Messiah Booker's attorney,
- 25:43Speaker 1: it wasn't exactly an act of brotherly love.
- 25:46Speaker 6: What did your client think when he found out that
- 25:48Speaker 6: his own brother was willing to testify against him?
- 25:52Speaker 5: As you might imagine, that was a distressing moment to
- 25:55Speaker 5: find out that your own flesh and blood is willing
- 25:58Speaker 5: to do such an app I think he felt betrayal.
- 26:02Speaker 1: But for prosecutors, blood is not thicker than a solid conviction.
- 26:06Speaker 1: The Suffolk County da is good to go.
- 26:09Speaker 6: So the prosecutor made you feel confident that this was
- 26:13Speaker 6: an opening, shutcase. Yes, and they had all the evidence
- 26:16Speaker 6: that they needed to get their conviction.
- 26:17Speaker 1: Yes. Coming on the.
- 26:20Speaker 13: Travesty of justice unfortunately occurred right before my very eyes
- 26:26Speaker 13: in this courtroom.
- 26:27Speaker 1: The skills of justice would come crashing down on the
- 26:30Speaker 1: family of Dmitri Hampton.
- 26:32Speaker 6: You physically fell to.
- 26:33Speaker 14: The floor and just started screaming.
- 26:35Speaker 6: Can you answer whether you hid evidence from defend and
- 26:38Speaker 6: Matthew Booker.
- 26:43Speaker 1: Twenty one year old Dmitri Hampton is gunned down in
- 26:45Speaker 1: a violent home invasion. Police and the prosecution are convinced
- 26:48Speaker 1: they know who the trigger man is and he's going
- 26:51Speaker 1: to go to prison for a long time. However, no
- 26:54Speaker 1: one was ready for what happened in that court room.
- 26:56Speaker 1: Once again, here Special Legal Correspondent Amy Dash.
- 27:00Speaker 6: In all my years as a lawyer, I don't think
- 27:02Speaker 6: I've ever seen a legal mistake this bit.
- 27:05Speaker 1: I want my freedom, my family back, I want justice.
- 27:09Speaker 1: Matthew Messiah Booker, the man police say callously fired a
- 27:13Speaker 1: nine millimeter weapon in the chest of a promising young
- 27:17Speaker 1: college student. He's defiant. I am innocent of all, Charger,
- 27:22Speaker 1: and in his mind above the law.
- 27:24Speaker 5: Every time they put on an enroll suit.
- 27:28Speaker 14: Uniform badge is only a costume of decession.
- 27:32Speaker 5: He has a philosophy that he is a sovereign citizen,
- 27:36Speaker 5: that the American system of justice does not necessarily have
- 27:39Speaker 5: jurisdiction over him.
- 27:41Speaker 1: But the Messiah's mantra falls on deaf years. He is
- 27:45Speaker 1: alleged cohorts face murder Chargers Messiah thought to be the
- 27:49Speaker 1: actual shooter. An English mother tells our Special Legal correspondent
- 27:56Speaker 1: Amy Dash, she prays for a conviction.
- 27:59Speaker 11: He's a master manipulator for the man.
- 28:02Speaker 1: She believes is his soul as killer.
- 28:05Speaker 11: He's a social path. Sociopaths usually don't feel anything they
- 28:08Speaker 11: have no regards for human life.
- 28:10Speaker 13: Mister Aaron, did you have an opportunity to speak with
- 28:13Speaker 13: your client?
- 28:14Speaker 1: Brendan Ahern is a former prosecutor turned defense lawyer.
- 28:17Speaker 5: As a criminal defense attorney, this was my first jury trial.
- 28:21Speaker 1: And Messiah Booker is the first of four co defendants
- 28:24Speaker 1: to face judge and jury for the botched but murderous
- 28:28Speaker 1: home invasion. Ahern knows his client is up against two
- 28:32Speaker 1: compelling eyewitnesses who made deals with prosecutors.
- 28:35Speaker 5: It was the mother of his child that they had
- 28:38Speaker 5: been together for a substantial period of time, and the
- 28:41Speaker 5: brother of my client that were cooperated as witnesses and
- 28:45Speaker 5: testified against him at trial.
- 28:48Speaker 1: Prosecutor Glenn kirch Rock was also armed with damning cell
- 28:52Speaker 1: phone tracking.
- 28:53Speaker 5: There were cell tower evidence that indicated that the phone
- 28:58Speaker 5: of some of the alleged participants were pinging off of
- 29:03Speaker 5: a tower nearby at her around the time of the offense.
- 29:09Speaker 1: In a sixteen year old witness and the home invasion
- 29:11Speaker 1: claims she recognized Messiah's.
- 29:14Speaker 11: Voice the prosecutor who was telling us the whole time,
- 29:16Speaker 11: don't worry about it. You know this is a slam dog.
- 29:19Speaker 11: We got all the evidence, you know, We don't want
- 29:22Speaker 11: these guys to turn on each other's and they already.
- 29:24Speaker 1: Did, but there would be no slam done. In fact,
- 29:28Speaker 1: the case against Matthew Messiah Booker would end in a
- 29:31Speaker 1: bombshell blog.
- 29:32Speaker 7: How can something like this happen?
- 29:35Speaker 1: The prosecutor is accused of egregious misconduct, allegations that rocked
- 29:39Speaker 1: the court. A Hearn discovers Middriw that prosecutor kurtz Rock
- 29:44Speaker 1: withheld critical evidence from the defense.
- 29:47Speaker 5: It was a great volume of materials. It was hundreds
- 29:50Speaker 5: of pages of notes and statements taken from witnesses.
- 29:54Speaker 6: Did you think the failure to turn over evidence was intentional?
- 29:58Speaker 5: The only way that that could have been done is deliberately, methodically,
- 30:02Speaker 5: and systematically, and I stand by my position in court
- 30:06Speaker 5: that it was intentional.
- 30:08Speaker 1: Eharn argued that the evidence was held by Glenn kurtz
- 30:11Speaker 1: Rock named other potential suspects.
- 30:13Speaker 5: These were people that had made admissions to family members,
- 30:17Speaker 5: that admitted that they played a role and gave details
- 30:21Speaker 5: that in my view, could only be known by people
- 30:23Speaker 5: who had entered that home or had intimate knowledge of
- 30:26Speaker 5: what had occurred inside the home. But I didn't see
- 30:28Speaker 5: a single shred of paperwork that indicated that those people
- 30:31Speaker 5: had been interviewed and closed out as suspects.
- 30:34Speaker 9: The appearance is obviously that somebody went through and surgically
- 30:38Speaker 9: removes items that they felt would be harmful to their case.
- 30:42Speaker 6: At this point, this trial is a mess.
- 30:45Speaker 1: Without a doubt, it was more than a mess. The
- 30:48Speaker 1: case against Booker was, for all intents and purposes, decimated,
- 30:53Speaker 1: as was Glenn Kurtzrock's career in the DA's office. As
- 30:59Speaker 1: for Booker's charge, it was just too much of a
- 31:02Speaker 1: gamble for prosecutors.
- 31:03Speaker 6: When you heard charges dropped, what was your reaction?
- 31:07Speaker 14: I fell to the floor.
- 31:08Speaker 6: You physically fell to the floor, Really yeah.
- 31:11Speaker 14: At work and just started screaming. Felt like they told
- 31:15Speaker 14: me that my brother was killed all over again.
- 31:18Speaker 1: Booker gets the deal of a lifetime murder charges dropped.
- 31:21Speaker 1: He'll plead to five years for attempted burglary.
- 31:24Speaker 7: It's like another stab in the back, another stab.
- 31:27Speaker 1: Nor Dimitri's mother has a message for the world's luckiest
- 31:33Speaker 1: formerly accused killer.
- 31:35Speaker 11: Matthew has a dark soul, no concern for the life
- 31:39Speaker 11: that he took from our family.
- 31:41Speaker 4: He is heartless.
- 31:43Speaker 1: But in this case, the more poignant message is the
- 31:46Speaker 1: one his heartbroken mother gave to the Suffolk County DA.
- 31:49Speaker 11: This is not justice, nor will we ever get justice
- 31:52Speaker 11: for our loved one. This court have taken the only
- 31:55Speaker 11: thing that truly mattered to me, and that is trust
- 31:59Speaker 11: for the criminal system, it has failed.
- 32:04Speaker 9: It's a culture where sometimes the idea of seeking justice
- 32:08Speaker 9: gets lost in the idea of seeking a conviction.
- 32:14Speaker 1: The DA wrote a letter of apology to Dimitri's family, stating,
- 32:18Speaker 1: in part, the conduct of the prosecutor was inexcusable. The
- 32:21Speaker 1: consequences are devastating and unnecessarily inflict more pain on those
- 32:26Speaker 1: left behind to cope. Even though prosecutors apologized, they're convinced
- 32:31Speaker 1: they nabbed the right killer, but without his defense being
- 32:34Speaker 1: permitted to see all the required evidence, the state's case
- 32:38Speaker 1: is destroyed.
- 32:40Speaker 6: What do you have to say to the District Attorney's office?
- 32:43Speaker 1: Why, you know what, I probably could have did a
- 32:49Speaker 1: better job than they did. The DA's office did not
- 32:53Speaker 1: respond to our requests for comment, but we tracked down
- 32:56Speaker 1: the former prosecutor.
- 32:58Speaker 6: I tried for a couple months to get you to comment.
- 32:59Speaker 6: Can we talk to you now? You know what?
- 33:01Speaker 7: Like I said, I'm not going to.
- 33:02Speaker 1: Be making any public comments on you looking for an
- 33:05Speaker 1: explanation to offer the Billiard family of Dmitri Hampton.
- 33:08Speaker 6: Can you answer whether you hid evidence from defendant Matthew Booker.
- 33:13Speaker 6: Is there anything you can say as to how more
- 33:15Speaker 6: than one hundred pages of evidence was missing from the file.
- 33:19Speaker 7: I'm not going to be making any public comments.
- 33:21Speaker 1: And on this day the scales of justice deliver a
- 33:25Speaker 1: five year punishment that in no way equals the value
- 33:28Speaker 1: of Dmitri Hampton's life.
- 33:30Speaker 13: Someone got away with murder.
- 33:33Speaker 1: Still not good enough for Messiam. He tried to withdraw
- 33:36Speaker 1: that plea on the day of sentencing, causing a raucous
- 33:39Speaker 1: scene in the courtroom with constant interruptions.
- 33:42Speaker 13: You want to remain in his fortright for the remains
- 33:45Speaker 13: this proceeding, Why all right, take them out?
- 33:49Speaker 9: Take him out.
- 34:00Speaker 1: Siah Booker is not about to have the last word
- 34:03Speaker 1: or the last memory of a murder case gone wrong.
- 34:06Speaker 1: That's a privilege reserved only for Dmitri Hampton.
- 34:09Speaker 13: Everything that I learned about Dmitri Hampton indicated to me
- 34:14Speaker 13: that he was a fine young man with a bright future.
- 34:22Speaker 6: Do you think you'll ever get justice?
- 34:24Speaker 11: No, it's not about the justice. At this point. We
- 34:27Speaker 11: know that's gone. Dmitri is at peace. Dmitri don't know
- 34:30Speaker 11: anything about the justice.
- 34:31Speaker 6: So would you say that your brother was undoubtedly a hero.
- 34:35Speaker 7: Yeah, It in my mind is like, yeah, I'm proud
- 34:38Speaker 7: of you, brocause he took your business, you know,
