- 0:15Speaker 1: What's up, everybody, how's it going? Welcome to JFK Book Reviews,
- 0:20Speaker 1: a division of the Lonegoming podcast. I Am Big Bad Bob.
- 0:25Speaker 1: Joe is currently disposed at the archives this week, so
- 0:29Speaker 1: again it's just me and you, Ron Davus, But that's okay.
- 0:39Speaker 1: You're probably getting sick or tired of look at my
- 0:41Speaker 1: stupid face by now. But here we are again with
- 0:47Speaker 1: another exciting edition of JFK Book Reviews, and this show
- 0:50Speaker 1: is not going to really be about reviewing, per se.
- 0:58Speaker 1: I have a fan fantastic smattering of fictional, factional fictional
- 1:07Speaker 1: books today by special request from my friend Deborah, So
- 1:13Speaker 1: we are going to cover some recommendations from me to
- 1:19Speaker 1: you today concerning fictionalized accounts of the assassination. Now, this
- 1:27Speaker 1: is by no means the be all, end all or
- 1:31Speaker 1: all of them, and if you have some good ones,
- 1:34Speaker 1: I'd really be interested in hearing about it in the
- 1:36Speaker 1: comments section. All right, So, without further ado, let's just
- 1:41Speaker 1: get the elephant in the room out of the way.
- 1:43Speaker 1: We've already done a book review on this, but it
- 1:46Speaker 1: is Stephen King's eleven twenty two sixty three, and only
- 1:51Speaker 1: because she is so goddamn thick uh again. In my opinion,
- 2:00Speaker 1: this is the top dog when it comes to fictionalized
- 2:06Speaker 1: historical fiction concerning the assassination. I mean, nobody does it
- 2:13Speaker 1: better than Stephen King. And my god, this book is great.
- 2:19Speaker 1: I love it. So check out the book review for
- 2:22Speaker 1: eleven twenty two sixty three if you want more of that.
- 2:24Speaker 1: But I hadn't included because it's the greatest fictionalized version
- 2:30Speaker 1: in my opinion, of the assassination, And you know, tries
- 2:37Speaker 1: to answer a lot of the what if questions? What
- 2:40Speaker 1: if this? What if that? All right? Without further ado
- 2:47Speaker 1: the book? You see shit right here, The Third Bullet
- 2:58Speaker 1: by Steven hunter Man. There's a hell of a glare
- 3:01Speaker 1: on this thing. He's got a very shiny cover. Third Bullet. Now,
- 3:09Speaker 1: this is a Bob Lee Swagger novel. You might recognize
- 3:13Speaker 1: the name if you've ever seen the Mark Wahlberg movie Shooter.
- 3:22Speaker 1: Bob Lee Swagger is basically a retired marine sniper who
- 3:28Speaker 1: goes around and investigates all kinds of stuff in all
- 3:31Speaker 1: these different series of books, but in this one in particular,
- 3:39Speaker 1: he's drawn into an investigation involving the third Bullet, allegedly
- 3:48Speaker 1: fired from the dow text building, and it tries to
- 3:57Speaker 1: answer the questions about government cover up wide lee Harvey
- 4:02Speaker 1: Oswald about to become one of the most hunted man
- 4:04Speaker 1: on Earth, risk at all by returning to his rooming
- 4:06Speaker 1: house to secure a pistol he could have easily brought
- 4:09Speaker 1: to work with him. How could a conspiracy the wind
- 4:12Speaker 1: unpenetrated for fifty years have thrown together in the two
- 4:15Speaker 1: and a half days between the announcement of the President's
- 4:18Speaker 1: route and the assassination itself. And I really really enjoyed
- 4:27Speaker 1: this book. So, I mean, all the books you're gonna
- 4:30Speaker 1: hear me talk about today are my recommendations to you.
- 4:33Speaker 1: Things that I endorse, things that I would encourage you.
- 4:36Speaker 1: If you're a fan of JFK Assassination Lord, you should
- 4:40Speaker 1: get and you should read because they are good books.
- 4:44Speaker 1: I'm not gonna be recommending any shit books here today,
- 4:48Speaker 1: and I won't be giving any reviews. I won't be
- 4:50Speaker 1: giving detailed analysis of the plot because these are fiction novels.
- 4:56Speaker 1: I mean, you already know the ending, okay, in the
- 5:00Speaker 1: real world, and when we normally do the JFK book reviews,
- 5:05Speaker 1: we can do a review because again it's not like
- 5:09Speaker 1: it's you know, a top secret plot, so I'm not
- 5:15Speaker 1: going to give a detailed analysis about what the book
- 5:18Speaker 1: is about. There will be links below where you can
- 5:22Speaker 1: purchase every book that I will be talking about here
- 5:26Speaker 1: today through Amazon. This book here was published in twenty thirteen,
- 5:32Speaker 1: and you can get a paperback like the one that
- 5:35Speaker 1: I have here brand new for ten ninety nine or
- 5:44Speaker 1: about six bucks if you want to use copy for
- 5:47Speaker 1: very good. They do have hardcovers for fourteen eighty two
- 5:52Speaker 1: right now and used hardcovers for six dollars and seven cents.
- 5:58Speaker 1: So again, that's Steven Hunter. The Third Bullet featuring Bob
- 6:04Speaker 1: Lee Swagger, retired marine sniper investigator. You know he's throwing
- 6:10Speaker 1: into a fantastical story. I highly recommend it. Check it out,
- 6:17Speaker 1: all right, folks. Next up we have I have somewhere
- 6:22Speaker 1: to put all these damn books. The JFK Conspiracy, The
- 6:30Speaker 1: Missing File by Jim Bowles. She's a she's a little hefty,
- 6:39Speaker 1: a little hefty, But this book here incorporates real historical
- 6:49Speaker 1: figures in the conspiracy based on facts uncovered over the
- 6:56Speaker 1: last half century. Does cover things from a conspiracy angle,
- 7:02Speaker 1: but it is a fictionalized account. He uses characters such
- 7:08Speaker 1: as Jack Moriarty, chief Investigator of the House Select Committee.
- 7:15Speaker 1: You know, it's interesting, very interesting. This book was published
- 7:23Speaker 1: in two thousand and eight at three hundred and eighty
- 7:27Speaker 1: six pages. The author spent thirty years as a police officer,
- 7:34Speaker 1: twenty years the sheriff Jim Bowles, when commander of the
- 7:43Speaker 1: Dallas Police Inspections Division, was assigned to work with Jack Moriarty,
- 7:47Speaker 1: chief investigator of the agency, making him the last officer
- 7:49Speaker 1: assigned to the assassination of President Kennedy. So again, very interesting.
- 7:57Speaker 1: This guy actually had ties to the assassination, worked in
- 8:01Speaker 1: Dallas for a very long time for the Dallas Police
- 8:03Speaker 1: Department in the Sheriff's office, interfaced with the HSCA, and
- 8:08Speaker 1: then wrote a book a fictionalized account from a conspiracy angle,
- 8:15Speaker 1: So make sure to check it out. That is JFK
- 8:18Speaker 1: The Missing File by Jim Bowles, a very interesting read. Now,
- 8:24Speaker 1: this book here is available on Amazon for twenty dollars.
- 8:31Speaker 1: Used one copy left, so good luck finding it again.
- 8:36Speaker 1: I'll put links to Amazon for all of these books
- 8:40Speaker 1: in the description for you to check out. Next up,
- 8:44Speaker 1: we have a book published recently last year as a
- 8:47Speaker 1: matter of fact called JFK Loose Ends by Joseph Covino Junior,
- 8:57Speaker 1: Joey Jr. JFK Loose inn Again. This is a fictionalized
- 9:04Speaker 1: investigation into the murder of JFK. And it's really a
- 9:12Speaker 1: good introduction into a lot of the characters that are
- 9:18Speaker 1: fictionalized in this book, such as Jesse Curry. The only
- 9:24Speaker 1: fictional person in this book is the detective for the
- 9:29Speaker 1: Dallas Police Department assigned by Jesse Curry to investigate these crimes,
- 9:36Speaker 1: which are the suspicious deaths after the assassination. It's told
- 9:44Speaker 1: in a flashback form and goes into real life witnesses
- 9:51Speaker 1: and personally experienced personally experiencing their fates. Betty Mooney, Warren Reynolds,
- 9:58Speaker 1: Edwin Walker, Jim Cothy, George Senata, George de Mornshield, Oswald's
- 10:04Speaker 1: benefactor yako Ok, a beautiful Japanese Oswald acquaintance, Mary Pinchot Meyer,
- 10:11Speaker 1: JFK's mistress, and a covert assassin code named Mitchell. So
- 10:20Speaker 1: all kinds of good stuff in here. Clock's In at
- 10:22Speaker 1: two hundred and ten pages, is currently available on paperback
- 10:29Speaker 1: on Amazon for nineteen ninety nine and ninety nine on
- 10:37Speaker 1: the Kendle, So that is JFK. Loose Ends. Like I said,
- 10:43Speaker 1: it's not a huge read. Two hundred and ten pages.
- 10:45Speaker 1: It goes quick. Check it out. Excellent, excellently written. Not
- 10:53Speaker 1: too many people know about this book, so check it out. JFK.
- 10:56Speaker 1: Loos Ends, Joseph Covino Junior, Joey Jr. Go support him
- 11:00Speaker 1: independent publishing. Oh right, folks. Next up, we have an oldie,
- 11:07Speaker 1: but a goodie, as you'll see right over here. This
- 11:14Speaker 1: book is called Strange Peaches Now. It's a very cool book.
- 11:22Speaker 1: It's old. It's old. It was publishing the thing in
- 11:25Speaker 1: nineteen seventy one originally, and it's about a TV Western
- 11:31Speaker 1: star who quits his successful TV series and returns to
- 11:35Speaker 1: Dallas to make a documentary film that reveals the truth
- 11:38Speaker 1: about his hometown, which includes the jfk assassination. His quest
- 11:45Speaker 1: forces him to learn if he is capable of using
- 11:48Speaker 1: his six gun for real as he moves from booze
- 11:50Speaker 1: and radical politics in oil men's palaces into the infamous
- 11:55Speaker 1: Carousel Club in the underworld of arms and dope smuggling
- 11:59Speaker 1: in a city right for the murder of a president.
- 12:02Speaker 1: And that is Strange Peaches Now. I'm a fan of
- 12:08Speaker 1: the other cover. Sorry, this one the original that came
- 12:13Speaker 1: on the hardcover. This is the soft cover. She's a
- 12:18Speaker 1: little thick clocking In a four hundred and seven pages
- 12:24Speaker 1: Strange Peaches by Edwin Shrake says, when anybody asked me
- 12:29Speaker 1: what Dallas was like during the time of the Kennedy assassination,
- 12:32Speaker 1: I always refer them to one book, Edwin Shrakes, Strange Peaches.
- 12:38Speaker 1: That quote is from Don Graham of Texas Monthly Magazine.
- 12:44Speaker 1: So yeah, this one is very cool, very cool Strange Peaches. Again,
- 12:50Speaker 1: it's an oldie, but a goodie, fictionalized historical faction. Interesting.
- 13:00Speaker 1: Next up, we got an interesting one if I can
- 13:07Speaker 1: pick the right book. Here, here we go. For all
- 13:12Speaker 1: my Brits across the pond, I give to you sixty
- 13:18Speaker 1: three Closure all right, by the author of London Blues,
- 13:24Speaker 1: Anthony FreeWin or Fruin probably Fruin and the Great JFK
- 13:34Speaker 1: Conspiracy novel sixty three Closure. Now this book, I'll read
- 13:40Speaker 1: it back to you. It says, after a close friend's
- 13:41Speaker 1: apparent suicide, Christopher Cornwell receives several photos the friend mailed
- 13:47Speaker 1: prior to his death. Cornwell discovers, by chance, the presence
- 13:51Speaker 1: in one of the photos of Lee Harvey Oswald, the
- 13:54Speaker 1: alleged assassin of President Kennedy. But how could Oswald have
- 13:58Speaker 1: been photographed and a small all herschardfire shit Hertfordshire's market
- 14:04Speaker 1: town when he was supposed to be living in Russia
- 14:07Speaker 1: as a defector. At the same time as Cornwell investigates
- 14:11Speaker 1: the photos, he unknowingly becomes the target of an investigation
- 14:14Speaker 1: himself by a shadowy agency is determined to maintain the
- 14:17Speaker 1: secrets now as in nineteen sixty three. So for all
- 14:22Speaker 1: you Brits over there who wants some Lee Harvey Oswald
- 14:25Speaker 1: fiction about him supposedly being in Hertfordshire, check it out
- 14:33Speaker 1: sixty three closure. This book has three hundred and forty
- 14:36Speaker 1: three pages. She's what we call slim thick. Published in
- 14:42Speaker 1: nineteen and ninety eight. You can find this on Amazon again.
- 14:46Speaker 1: Links in the description for ten fifty four used and
- 14:53Speaker 1: seven ninety nine kindle other used from six dollars and
- 14:59Speaker 1: fifty four cents, and it might be different over on
- 15:02Speaker 1: Amazon UK. I don't know how that works, but if
- 15:06Speaker 1: you're in America and you want this book, link is
- 15:10Speaker 1: in the description and you're looking at about ten bucks. Again,
- 15:16Speaker 1: excellent out of the box thinking. When it comes to
- 15:21Speaker 1: you know, figures in the Assassination, it's a different story
- 15:27Speaker 1: than the ones we're all used to. So that is
- 15:30Speaker 1: always good, always good, all right. Next up, we got
- 15:35Speaker 1: a big trilogy, a big trilogy in the Assassination by
- 15:41Speaker 1: a big swinging dick who you may ask, James motherfucking
- 15:48Speaker 1: l Roy, that's who. You may have heard of him before.
- 15:54Speaker 1: He's written the books The Black Dahlia made into a movie.
- 15:57Speaker 1: That was his first book. He's written the book La
- 16:00Speaker 1: Confidential made into a movie. You may have heard of it. Uh.
- 16:04Speaker 1: And this is his Underworld series. It's it's a trilogy.
- 16:10Speaker 1: And the first one in the trilogy is called American Tabloid.
- 16:15Speaker 1: And I'll read you the back. Uh. We are behind
- 16:22Speaker 1: and below the scenes of JFK's presidential election, The Bay
- 16:25Speaker 1: of Pigs, the assassination in the underworld that connects Miami,
- 16:30Speaker 1: Los Angeles, Chicago, and DC, where the CIA, the Mob,
- 16:34Speaker 1: j Edgar Hoover, Howard Hughes, Jimmy Hoffer, Cuban exiles, and
- 16:40Speaker 1: various loose cannons conspire in a covert anarchy where the
- 16:46Speaker 1: right drugs, the right amount of cash, the right and
- 16:51Speaker 1: murder buys the moment of a man's loyalty. So again
- 16:59Speaker 1: I'm I'm a fan of James Elroy's writing style, and
- 17:05Speaker 1: this is no different. And again we got a trilogy here, folks,
- 17:11Speaker 1: we got us a trilogy. So this book here clocks
- 17:16Speaker 1: in at five hundred and seventy six pages. Excellent book.
- 17:24Speaker 1: It was first published in nineteen ninety five. So it's
- 17:27Speaker 1: an oldie, but a goodie. That's American Tabloid by James Elroy.
- 17:34Speaker 1: Now we moved to the second book in the series.
- 17:39Speaker 1: It's known as the Cold six thousand national bestseller. In
- 17:47Speaker 1: this savagely audacious new novel, James Elroy plants a pipe
- 17:51Speaker 1: bomb under the America of the sixties and lights the
- 17:53Speaker 1: fuse and watches the shrapnel fly. On November twenty second,
- 17:58Speaker 1: nineteen sixty three, three men converge in Dallas, their job
- 18:02Speaker 1: to clean up the JFK hits, loose ends and inconvenient witnesses.
- 18:08Speaker 1: They are Wayne Tedrow Junior, a Las Vegas cop with
- 18:11Speaker 1: family ties to the lunatic right, Ward Littel, a defrocked
- 18:15Speaker 1: FBI man turned underworld mouthpiece, and Pete Bondran, a dope
- 18:21Speaker 1: runner and hitman who serves as the mobs emissary to
- 18:24Speaker 1: the anti Castro underground. It goes back from there. In
- 18:28Speaker 1: the next five years, these night Riders run a whirlwind
- 18:31Speaker 1: of plots and counterplots. Howard Hughes takeover of Vegas, j
- 18:35Speaker 1: Edghovah's war against the civil rights movement, the heroin trade
- 18:38Speaker 1: in Vietnam, and the murders of Martin Luther King and
- 18:41Speaker 1: Bobby Kennedy. So yeah, freaking awesome, right, freaking awesome. You
- 18:53Speaker 1: can find it on Amazon new paperback for nineteen bucks
- 18:57Speaker 1: used as low as six bucks, hardcover seventeen bucks as
- 19:03Speaker 1: low as well seventeen bucks used. But yeah, that is
- 19:12Speaker 1: the second book in the series, The Cold six thousand,
- 19:17Speaker 1: The Cold six thousand That brings us to the third
- 19:21Speaker 1: book in the series, Folks, and it's called Blood Is
- 19:27Speaker 1: a Rover or Blood's a Rover, Blood's a Rover. Let's
- 19:35Speaker 1: see America's master of noir delivers his masterpiece, a ripped
- 19:40Speaker 1: ring deverishly wild ride to the bloody end of the sixties.
- 19:45Speaker 1: It's dark, baby, and hot, hot hot. Martin Luther King
- 19:49Speaker 1: is assassinated, Bobby's assassinated Los Angeles nineteen sixty eight. Conspiracy
- 19:55Speaker 1: theories are taking hold on the horizon looms the Democratic
- 19:58Speaker 1: Convention in Chicago and violent constant gunfire Pepper South La. Violence, greed,
- 20:05Speaker 1: and grime are replacing free love, and everybody, from Howard Hughes,
- 20:09Speaker 1: Richard Nixon, and j I. Guy to right wing assassins
- 20:12Speaker 1: and left wing revolutionaries are getting dirty. At the center
- 20:16Speaker 1: of it all, it's a triumvirate. The President's strong arm goon,
- 20:20Speaker 1: an ex cop and heroin runner, and a private eye
- 20:22Speaker 1: whose quarry is so dangerous she could set off the
- 20:25Speaker 1: whole powder keg again. Awesome book. Loved it, six hundred
- 20:32Speaker 1: and fifty eight pages. She's a thick one, and you
- 20:36Speaker 1: put all these together, I mean you're up near around,
- 20:41Speaker 1: you know, two thousand pages of JFK fictionalized goodness. This
- 20:47Speaker 1: book can be found on Amazon for fourteen bucks paperback,
- 20:53Speaker 1: twenty two in hardcover. And this book, the last of
- 20:57Speaker 1: the trilogy, was published, I believe, in two thousand and nine,
- 21:02Speaker 1: and I forgot to say, but the Cold six thousand,
- 21:04Speaker 1: I believe was published in two thousand and one. So again,
- 21:10Speaker 1: some very good fictionalized books. They actually have a bundle
- 21:19Speaker 1: where you can shop this series and get all three
- 21:22Speaker 1: books for thirty six dollars and ninety seven cents on Amazon.
- 21:25Speaker 1: So very interesting. Again, like I said, this is not
- 21:29Speaker 1: the be all end all of all of them. You know,
- 21:33Speaker 1: there was Don Delulo's Libra. There's a bunch of other
- 21:36Speaker 1: good ones. I can't do them all, nor do I
- 21:40Speaker 1: have them all, but these are the ones that I've had,
- 21:44Speaker 1: these are the ones that I've read, and these are
- 21:46Speaker 1: the ones that I can recommend to you for a
- 21:52Speaker 1: good read. And that's ultimately what we're looking for here.
- 21:55Speaker 1: If the subject of the assassination is interesting to you
- 22:00Speaker 1: and you want a great fictionalized read, check out some
- 22:03Speaker 1: of the books that I've brought to you here today
- 22:06Speaker 1: for your reading perusal. And that has been another exciting
- 22:14Speaker 1: edition of JFK Book Reviews. Again, if I missed anything,
- 22:16Speaker 1: or you want to point me in the direction of
- 22:18Speaker 1: some cool novels that I may have missed, feel free
- 22:22Speaker 1: in the comments section to let me know what you like.
- 22:26Speaker 1: I'm always down to check out some new books, that's
