- 0:00SPEAKER_00: What if I told you that worship,
- 0:04SPEAKER_00: what we're doing today,
- 0:07SPEAKER_00: is a workshop,
- 0:10SPEAKER_00: is a laboratory of faith.
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: What we do with God shapes what we believe about God.
- 0:21SPEAKER_00: And what we believe about God shapes what we do when we gather.
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: I learned that when I went to seminary many,
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: many years ago in Brenda Martin Hurst's class on worship.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: I'm sorry about this, Brenda.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: If you're watching, I don't remember much about the class today.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: except this.
- 0:47She said that worship informs our theology about God and our
- 0:55theology about God
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: informs our worship.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: I have found that to be very,
- 1:04very true as I have led congregations and participated in
- 1:09congregations over the
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: years.
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: We read some scriptures today in Acts.
- 1:14The scripture from Acts says that the church devoted themselves
- 1:20each day to
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: teaching,
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: to table,
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: to prayers.
- 1:25And that rhythm of faith and life formed a people that at that
- 1:34time looked like the
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: risen Lord Jesus.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: N.T.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: Wright,
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: who is one of my favorite theologians,
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: often says this,
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: that we become that which we worship.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: And if that is true,
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: then our liturgy,
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: in other words,
- 1:54the things that we do and say and sing and pray in worship is
- 2:01all spiritual
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: formation.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: Our habits are
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: Our faith habits train our hearts long before we notice them.
- 2:15Anyone who has gone to church camp and sung church songs knows
- 2:22that this is true
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: foundational and formational in us as youths.
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: We are the Church of the Brethren,
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: and this series is all about letting our joys be known,
- 2:38the things that make us uniquely brethren and highlighting
- 2:42those and sharing those
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: with one another,
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: remembering those with one another,
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: and then also sharing those out in the world.
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: So here is the Brethren way, I think, in one image.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: Towel, table, table.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: Tank.
- 3:03The towel of John 13,
- 3:05the table of 1 Corinthians 11,
- 3:09and the baptismal tank.
- 3:11It probably wasn't a tank,
- 3:12but it's a river,
- 3:13and there's a tank back there.
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: So, tank.
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: of Acts chapter 2.
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: Going under with Jesus and rising into new life.
- 3:24We had a wonderful experience of community of faith last week
- 3:29of baptizing four
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: persons into our faith community.
- 3:33Wonderful reminder and act of reaching back and also reaching
- 3:39forward into who we
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: are as the church of Jesus Christ.
- 3:44And we were reminded last week that historically our people
- 3:49said Scripture first.
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: Not creeds, but the New Testament as our rule of faith.
- 4:00And that commitment from early brethren and our continued
- 4:05commitment to that has
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: shaped a simple Jesus-centered worship.
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: Baptism came by triune immersion like we did last week, right?
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: Into the Father, into the Son, and into the Holy Spirit.
- 4:23Our worship act revealed a Trinitarian theology of who God and
- 4:29how God acts in our world.
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: Three dunks as dunkers into one love.
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: Another tenet or ordinance that we have is the love feast.
- 4:44SPEAKER_00: Braves our beliefs into a single night.
- 4:48SPEAKER_00: We wash feet because Jesus actually said,
- 4:52you should do this as my disciples in remembrance of me from
- 4:56now until I return.
- 4:58We share a meal and the cup and remember and belong to this
- 5:05faith community that we belong to.
- 5:08When Paul corrected the Corinthians in the scripture that we
- 5:13read here this
- 5:14SPEAKER_00: morning,
- 5:16SPEAKER_00: he wasn't being picky.
- 5:19SPEAKER_00: He was being pastoral.
- 5:23We need to remember that table worship that ignores the poor
- 5:30tells a false story about God.
- 5:36right theology and understanding of God's heart and love
- 5:41demands a reconciling table.
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: And that is what Paul was talking about in Corinthians.
- 5:50SPEAKER_00: In Philippians, he says, rejoice.
- 5:53SPEAKER_00: Why?
- 5:53SPEAKER_00: Because the Lord is near.
- 5:56SPEAKER_00: So we pray, we sing, we
- 6:00SPEAKER_00: Breathe.
- 6:01SPEAKER_00: Worship tutors our anxiety and grows our gentleness as a faith community.
- 6:10SPEAKER_00: And our polity,
- 6:12SPEAKER_00: the way we do things,
- 6:13SPEAKER_00: the polis of who we are,
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: our structures and such matches our worship.
- 6:21SPEAKER_00: We practice congregational discernment together.
- 6:27SPEAKER_00: Christ as the head.
- 6:30SPEAKER_00: So the gathered body listens for the Spirit together.
- 6:36SPEAKER_00: Why?
- 6:37SPEAKER_00: Because we believe that the Spirit gifts the whole body,
- 6:42not just singular individuals like the pastor or the priest or
- 6:49the apostle.
- 6:50SPEAKER_00: So our services make room for many voices, teaching.
- 6:58Testimonies,
- 6:59music,
- 7:00prayer requests,
- 7:02all shared as we gather as the worshiping community.
- 7:07If you're new here,
- 7:08that's why we do the different things that we do in our
- 7:12worship.
- 7:15Our calling as the Church of the Brethren includes something
- 7:18that is unique,
- 7:20SPEAKER_00: unfortunately,
- 7:21SPEAKER_00: to our faith community.
- 7:25SPEAKER_00: Love feast and communion.
- 7:29SPEAKER_00: And I want to remind you,
- 7:31SPEAKER_00: those that have been here for a long time and those of you that are new,
- 7:36SPEAKER_00: we plan these not as extras,
- 7:42SPEAKER_00: but as core formation.
- 7:46SPEAKER_00: The love feast and communion that we have together,
- 7:50SPEAKER_00: they preach with bread,
- 7:53SPEAKER_00: with water,
- 7:55SPEAKER_00: and with towels.
- 7:58As you saw last week,
- 7:59even how we receive members is a worship-shaped event.
- 8:05SPEAKER_00: We welcome by confession of faith and by baptism,
- 8:10SPEAKER_00: and belonging is celebrated as a gathered community,
- 8:15SPEAKER_00: not as some little small thing that happens in secret somewhere else.
- 8:23A lot of my formation has happened in a variety of places over
- 8:27the years,
- 8:28just as yours has.
- 8:30SPEAKER_00: My particular experience,
- 8:32a lot of my faith formation happened in Italy when I was a
- 8:36missionary there for 10
- 8:38SPEAKER_00: years.
- 8:39SPEAKER_00: And what I found was church often happened at tables in homes.
- 8:47SPEAKER_00: Espresso, pasta,
- 8:51SPEAKER_00: Scripture and stories all braided together as a faith community.
- 8:58SPEAKER_00: I learned that kitchens can be sanctuaries.
- 9:04SPEAKER_00: And saints, they wear aprons.
- 9:12As you heard again this morning,
- 9:14I have a wedding venue and a sunflower patch that's 10 acres.
- 9:22SPEAKER_00: But at weddings, I learn on the farm that tables are holy places.
- 9:29SPEAKER_00: Hospitality is a holy event.
- 9:34SPEAKER_00: And a set table where families gather and become one says you matter.
- 9:44SPEAKER_00: And it's a reminder to me that that is true for the Lord's table as well.
- 9:52SPEAKER_00: I was a GM at a Marriott, as I probably keep telling you.
- 9:55SPEAKER_00: I apologize for that.
- 9:56SPEAKER_00: But we trained.
- 9:58SPEAKER_00: Marriott trained us to anticipate and then to fulfill.
- 10:05SPEAKER_00: And I believe that that is good for worship, too.
- 10:10SPEAKER_00: We prepare.
- 10:12SPEAKER_00: We welcome.
- 10:14SPEAKER_00: We notice one another as we are here.
- 10:17SPEAKER_00: And we serve one another as we gather to worship.
- 10:24SPEAKER_00: So, how does worship inform theology for us?
- 10:30Well,
- 10:31I believe foot washing shapes a theology of humble equality
- 10:37among us.
- 10:39SPEAKER_00: The shared meal shapes a theology of reconciliation.
- 10:45Baptism shapes a theology of dying and rising daily as brothers
- 10:52and sisters.
- 10:53SPEAKER_00: Anointing shapes a theology of God with us in weakness together.
- 11:00SPEAKER_00: Congregational prayer shapes a theology of peace, hope, and healing.
- 11:09SPEAKER_00: And how does theology inform worship?
- 11:12SPEAKER_00: Well,
- 11:13SPEAKER_00: because we center on Jesus,
- 11:16our services elevate the New Testament scripture as a church of
- 11:20the brethren.
- 11:22SPEAKER_00: Because we believe in the body, well, we practice participation.
- 11:27That's why I'm always asking you to be a worship leader or tell
- 11:31a children's story
- 11:32SPEAKER_00: or do other things in worship.
- 11:34SPEAKER_00: Be a greeter, be an usher, get involved in ministry.
- 11:39SPEAKER_00: Because we trust the Spirit, we make room for silence and surprise.
- 11:46SPEAKER_00: Who remembers the balloons?
- 11:49SPEAKER_00: Not many of you.
- 11:50SPEAKER_00: I guess it wasn't much of a surprise.
- 11:53SPEAKER_00: Oh, some of you, yeah.
- 11:56SPEAKER_00: Because we hold to peace, we pray for enemies.
- 12:05SPEAKER_00: and we seek reconciliation and repair.
- 12:10SPEAKER_00: And because we value simplicity,
- 12:13SPEAKER_00: we resist performance,
- 12:16SPEAKER_00: which,
- 12:16SPEAKER_00: as you might imagine,
- 12:18SPEAKER_00: is a little bit difficult for me.
- 12:20SPEAKER_00: But nonetheless, I work on it.
- 12:24SPEAKER_00: This week, I wrote a substack piece called Towel Before Taser.
- 12:32It names my personal grief for neighbors who are homeless and
- 12:37mentally ill in D.C.
- 12:40SPEAKER_00: and also in the valley.
- 12:44SPEAKER_00: I realize capacity is thin and dignity is fleeting right now.
- 12:53SPEAKER_00: But I believe Jesus is calling us to come nearer.
- 12:59SPEAKER_00: I believe that worship must lead us to a witness.
- 13:06SPEAKER_00: The towel means we serve first, not sweep away.
- 13:12SPEAKER_00: The table reconciles us.
- 13:14SPEAKER_00: The tank sends us to live out our baptisms in public.
- 13:20SPEAKER_00: So,
- 13:21SPEAKER_00: we carry the towel,
- 13:23SPEAKER_00: the table,
- 13:24SPEAKER_00: and the tank into our homes,
- 13:26SPEAKER_00: into our streets,
- 13:27SPEAKER_00: and into our workspaces.
- 13:29SPEAKER_00: We show up.
- 13:31SPEAKER_00: We learn names.
- 13:34SPEAKER_00: And we make room.
- 13:37SPEAKER_00: This is how our worship tells the truth about God's love where we live.
- 13:44SPEAKER_00: Now, Paul warns that worship can lie.
- 13:50SPEAKER_00: about God.
- 13:53SPEAKER_00: If our table excludes,
- 13:56SPEAKER_00: our songs boast,
- 13:58SPEAKER_00: and our prayers ignore pain,
- 14:01SPEAKER_00: our practices need repentance,
- 14:05SPEAKER_00: not polishing.
- 14:09SPEAKER_00: So, three practices for us this season.
- 14:15SPEAKER_00: The towel.
- 14:17SPEAKER_00: Serve in quiet ways that cost you something.
- 14:22SPEAKER_00: Table, eat and reconcile especially with those who are unlike you.
- 14:30And tank,
- 14:31remember your baptismal vows and renew them in your daily
- 14:37choices.
- 14:39SPEAKER_00: And I'll just add a fourth, T for testimony.
- 14:45Tell each other where Jesus met you because stories train
- 14:52belief and form faith.
- 14:57SPEAKER_00: Young and old, listen, you are not spectators.
- 15:02SPEAKER_00: You are a royal priesthood, a holy nation.
- 15:09SPEAKER_00: that is called to serve with your sleeves rolled up.
- 15:14SPEAKER_00: So bring your gift.
- 15:17SPEAKER_00: The Spirit will braid it in.
- 15:20SPEAKER_00: Let's keep worship participatory and Christ-centered.
- 15:25SPEAKER_00: Let's plan well and then hold plans lightly.
- 15:28SPEAKER_00: Let's love be the loudest thing in the room.
- 15:35SPEAKER_00: Amen.
