Ah, April Fools. [laughs] He has better things to do than to, uh, s- hang out with two dorks on a pretend radio show. I, who I, I oughta... Yeah. [laughs] Oh, hey, we also have Mr. JP LeMaire here today.
• 2:23
Hey, did you know he can speak Chinese? Actually, yes, I did. [laughs] He's here to tell about us, uh, tell us about his new fat dually called the Dopamine. Man, my brain loves that stuff.

• 3:25
Zion Cyclery is supporting the music portion of the show. [upbeat instrumental music] And those jerks at fatbike.com. [laughs] Gomez is a piece of work. That Facebooking Facebooker. [laughs] Hey, where's that bell?
• 3:44
[bell ringing] [laughs] Top of the hill, people. Top of the hill. Top of the hill. Uh- Beer stop. We're gonna take a quick break here before we bring in Mr. Sav from Surly.
• 3:55
Somebody should bring old, uh, Sven a beer here. What? [upbeat instrumental music] I got a beer. Oh, he's got a beer. Yeah, you, you can assume the position. I need a beer.

• 5:07
[upbeat instrumental music] We're not back yet.
• 5:52
[laughing] Uh, see, there's, there's- Watch out for Zito. He's sat on a mic... Zito bringing the beer down. Hello. Um, he just sat on something. He sat on a mic. [laughs] So he sat on Mike's mic. Mike's mic...
• 6:05
chill Hey, Mike. Where'd Mike go? I'm Mike. Oh. I'm the new Mike. Mike is supposed to raffle crap off at this time. My middle name is Michael. He's getting beer. My middle name is Michael. Chill.
• 6:18
I bought bikes- Hey, JK, while you're back there- You, you people wanna win some stuff?... grab those raffle tickets. Are you guys recording this? Everybody got a raffle ticket?
• 6:27
Bring, bring the helmet of tickets back with you. Where the raffle tickets? Yeah, where are you guys? I got ticket number 178. Oh. 178. 178.
• 6:46
That's- Oh, Zito. It's Zito Oh, it's a good winner. That's- Whoop, whoop. That- that's- [laughs] Hey, Zito, we got you the darkest of birthday presents. 178- Nothing.
• 7:00
That's for a, that's for a 100 millimeter pair of bronze clown shoe rims. Bronze clown shoe rims, courtesy of Surly Bikes Intergalactic. [piano playing] Mr., Mr. Jim Huber everybody. Mr. Jim Huber. Mr. James T.
• 7:15
Huber, Dr. James T. Huber. I like this guy. I like him. Look at that. Great. That g- that guy's a pro. Yeah, yeah. Round of applause. All right, we're gonna get serious again. Now we're gonna get serious.
• 7:30
Uh, take this Baracode off. Please welcome I hear myself through my eustachian tubes. [laughs] Brain in juice. [laughs] All right, lead off with JK.
• 7:50
Whenever you're ready, JK. He's fiddling with his phone again. Ah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. All right. Welcome back to the radio program, everybody.
• 8:05
[laughs] Please welcome to the program, from Surly Bikes, Captain Eric Sovereign.
• 8:18
[upbeat music] You can tell I work for Surly 'cause of the hat. [laughs] Well, welcome, Sov. Thanks for joining us on the show. It's my pleasure to be here. [laughs] With conviction- So, So-...
• 8:35
with conviction next time. What? [laughs] So, Sov, let's not beat around the bush. Let's get right down to where the rubber meets the road, and get to the nitty-gritty. Nitty-gritty, I'm in. All right, did you hear me?
• 8:49
[laughs] Yes, yes. [laughs] Hey, Sov, I got a question for you. While doing a little show prep, I caught up on some of the Surly blog posts. A lot of good stuff in there.
• 8:58
Don't hear from you all that often anymore, but you did pen a good one called Don't Be a Dick. Can you tell us a little bit about what Don't Be a Dick's all about?
• 9:07
So, yes, Don't Be a Dick is, uh, is something I learned from a, a fella in the UK named, uh, Charlie, Charlie the Bikemonger. Charlie.
• 9:18
And, uh, he started a r- a race/ride that I was on, and the only rule of this race was don't be a dick. So
• 9:28
it goes a long way to, like, how you comport yourself in the real world of, uh, trying not to mess with other people and whatnot.
• 9:36
And on a race, don't ride in front of cars, don't throw dirt out into the shit, and don't, don't, you know, be a jerk wad. So Don't Be a Dick is kind of a way of being, so it's, it's something that I'm into. Right on.
• 9:53
The dao- I concur... of Sov. [laughs] So, like, you know, go be yourself, but, like, don't screw up anybody else's shit, except for the guy that just complained about the sound. Yeah. Yeah.
• 10:05
[laughs] I mean, it's 8:30 on a Friday night, and the guy was like, "It's too loud." [laughs] This is, this is, uh- "It's too loud. Close the door"... this is the early show crowd here.
• 10:13
All right, now, now that we're all in touch with our feelings, uh- [laughs] I forgot what I was gonna say. In touch with that fucking- So-... furnace... Sov, tell us,
• 10:30
is Pugsley dead? And if Pugsley is dead, is, was it sibling rivalry that, that drove Wednesday to murder? I would, I would like to go on the record at this moment and say that Pugsley is not dead. Oh, yes.
• 10:48
Spitto. All right. So [laughs] we've been, we at Surly, we've been, uh, producing the Pugsley for 10 years now. 10 years. 10 years. Possibly 11, I'm not sure. That's like a decade.
• 11:07
Fat bikes are a fad. Fat bikes are a fad, but the Pugsley was built at a time when there wasn't a lot of other stuff around. So it has, you know, the 135 spacing. Yeah. It has a lot of other stuff, so it's like- Yeah...
• 11:20
what can we do with what we have? So now that we have some other bikes, and maybe the Wednesday is what the Pugsley would have been had we designed it today, but there's still a lot of people- Yeah...
• 11:34
Spinner included- [laughs]... who appreciate the 135 spacing- Whoo... and the ability to find, you know, sort of regular parts that work with it. So- Nice, yeah, boo...
• 11:47
we're gonna, we're gonna go back to the drawing board, which is actually a computer. Right. And we're gonna have a new Pugsley, and it's gonna come out about a year from now. See you.
• 12:00
And it's gonna have some updated stuff and whatnot, but it's still gonna have that, still that elemental Pugsley thing, which is like what do you have that works with this?
• 12:09
What do you have down in the basement that you can build a bike with? And that's kinda, that's the idea of it. We're gonna still have a fat bike. It's still gonna be called the Pugsley.
• 12:19
It's gonna be awesome, and, uh, I, I think you should wait until you buy a fat bike until that comes out again. [laughs] Dude, that's big news. That's, that, that is...
• 12:29
You just dropped the bomb, um- We're not gonna kill it. We're not gonna kill it, unless at some point somebody from the design department says, "We're killing it." And then we'll adapt, and then it'll be dead.
• 12:40
[laughs] So for now, it's... We're... It's coming back. Finally starting to help. Probably. Maybe. Hey, so you got into town, uh, earlier today. Did you get a chance to go for a bike ride? We did go for a bike ride.
• 12:54
Ladies and gentlemen, one of my dearest friends in the universe, Chris Zito- Woo! Right over there. He's right there. Woo. He lives in Milwaukee.
• 13:07
He's a Milwaukee kind of guy, and, uh, so my buddy Paul Ziegel, Paul- Yeah. Paul's out there. Hi, Paul. Paul's, Paul's now officially my boss,
• 13:19
and, uh, Paul and I knew we were coming to this, and we contacted the Zito, and we said, "Can we sleep at your house?" [laughs] And Zito said, "Yeah." [laughs] So today, we, we came in.
• 13:36
We r- got in about 2:00, and we rode down south. We, we hit The Swinging Door. Right on. We hit what? A beer at Sabbatic. Sabbatic. Lydia's 15.
• 13:53
Lydia's, and we did a whole southern thing, and we did the, uh, the jungle, the Urban Jungle Cross course. Oh, yeah. Yeah, yeah. Anybody here done the Urban Jungle Cross? Anybody? Anybody? Yeah.
• 14:05
JK, JK, you're with DFL, weren't you? Has anybody done the Urban Jungle Cross? [laughs] Yeah.
• 14:12
So we went and rode that, and we got real wet, and we drank a lot of beers, and occasionally did some shots, so that's how I got here. Did you, did you [laughs] did you need shots after you rode the...
• 14:21
So did you climb through a hole in the fence, or, or is the fence gone? No, there's... Apparently, there's a place where you can go around the backside from the south- Oh... and there's not a fence there. All right.
• 14:33
So that means you can get in. Awesome. Right on. So- And it was rad... you mentioned Paul. Paul's the new, uh, brand manager at Surly, and- Paul. Aloha, Paul. So- Chicago. [laughs] Yeah, yeah.
• 14:51
You just did a little gymnastic, uh, flip-flop to a round off to a double back summersault- I gotta-... for listening to you on the radio, man... I, I gotta say, the one, the, the one and only thing that we asked,
• 15:01
uh, during the interview process of, you, you know, "You're gonna run the Surly brand, you know, this thing, this juggernaut that is the Surly brand- Indeed... can you do a cartwheel?" [laughs] And clearly- Clearly...
• 15:14
clearly- Clearly... he's brought the cartwheel to a whole new level. So S- Paul's been around, Paul's been around since day one, though, for Surly.
• 15:21
Paul is responsible for the first ever Surly product, which is the Singulator. No way. Yeah, back in the old days when everybody was trying to make single speeds out of whatever they had, this guy right here
• 15:38
was there for the birth, the, the, the naissance, if you will, of the, if you're into France, uh, the Singulator. So Pete Ziegel's Singulator, that's that guy right there. Not true.
• 15:51
[laughs] So Paul, now th- you had a long car ride to get here, and you're, you're coming here to be interviewed. Did you have any words of advice for Sav?
• 16:01
Any, any subjects that, that we should actually, like, stay away from? Well, the last trip I went on, Sav was, Sav was known... He was referenced as the dad, so I'm like, "Dad is looking out for us."
• 16:15
[laughs] I'm not the dad. [laughs] I always thought of Sav more as, like, an eccentric uncle. [laughs] So it's like April Fools' Day, Sav. Uh, do any pranks from the past stand out in your mind?
• 16:33
Pranks from the past. Pranks fr- that's a P-popping prank from the past. Wait, what was yours, Paul? What's the prank? What's the April Fools'? What was the April Fools' thing?
• 16:44
Well, we do have some new product that we wanna talk about. Some new Surly product. Oh, a new April Fools' product, all right. New Surly product. Well, we have the, uh- Police are here and they need you...
• 16:53
Body Bluff, the Body Bluff. Have you heard of that? That new one? Body Bluff. Yeah. It's kinda like a Buff. Oh, yeah, we're gonna have a Body Bluff.
• 17:04
Yeah, it's a full-body Buff, but there's a lot of holes for various appendages. [laughs] I like this idea. So it can be, it can be a s- Oh, really? It can be a skort. Oopsie. [laughs] It can be a, a Buff.
• 17:19
Something's going on, dudes. Dave Lunz is talking to the police. Don't forget the tube top. It can be all kinds of stuff. Uh-oh. Tube top. Dave Lunz- It can be a, it can be a tube top. [laughs] The Surly tube top.
• 17:31
Who would buy a Surly tube top? Anybody out there? Would anyone buy a Surly tube top? Surly tube top. We have one. We have one young lady. I think we should give her a prize. Yeah, we, we have one. One.
• 17:42
I could use it for a tourniquet. He could use it for a tourniquet, so one. We've sold one. Get it off. Lunz, you want to talk about it. Is there an echo in here? There might be. No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
• 17:56
Ba, ba, ba, ba, ba, ba, ba. I think we are actually, uh, we're being boarded by the Federation Starship, uh, Milwaukee Police is here, and, uh, this should be f- pretty fabulous on the radio show. Maybe-
• 18:09
Oh, the other thing that we're gonna produce this year, and this is for sure, is the Surly Camp Post. Camp post? The Camp Post. So you pack up all your stuff on your bike- Yeah... and you go camping- Right...
• 18:27
and you get there, and you're like, "Where am I gonna sit?" Right. So you pull your seat post out of your frame- It turns into that... it has a tripod on the bottom, comes out, and there's your seat.
• 18:41
Is it that loud with a voice in? The Camp Post. Bam. You were telling me to turn the mics on a minute ago. That's a- They love it. I think th- I, I can tell- I think we're gonna sell three or four of them. Oh, yeah.
• 18:53
I think that- [shouts] Double or nothing. Oh, crap. I think that, uh, we're going to take a break because our host is out talking to, uh, Milwaukee's finest- [laughs]...
• 19:04
to try and find out why people are in here talking very loudly through microphones. [laughs] Ladies and gentlemen, the Milwaukee Police Department.
• 19:14
[cheers] Hey, yeah, a little, uh, round of applause for our men in blue, or ladies in blue. [applause] [upbeat music] A big round of applause for the PD. The PD. Clap your hands. [laughs] All right.
• 19:33
[laughs] Why don't you play some soothing, we-want-peace-with-the-police music, Mr. Daisy?
• 19:40
[upbeat music] Hey, so listen up.
• 20:48
This is your brain. La, la, la, la, la, la. Sing a happy song. La, la, la, la, la, la. Smurf the whole day long. And this is your brain on plusbikes.com.
• 21:03
[upbeat music] Any questions? You're tuned to Fat Bike Radio.
• 21:15
[upbeat music] Ladies and gentlemen, the band.
• 21:53
The band. Milwaukee's finest- The band... asked us to turn it down for some reason A round of applause for the band. Smooth people. [upbeat music] Apparently, these brick buildings echo out on the street pretty well. Uh.
• 22:07
Who knew? Apparently, the sound of my voice was making people tear their own eyes out, or ears out- That's probably what it was... something. [laughs] So right on. Yeah, so- Where were we, Sav?
• 22:18
Yeah, there was a dude that came by, and he was a, a, he was... He didn't like the noise 'cause he's old. But I'm old, and I like the noise. I like the noise. Noise bad. [laughs] So Sav, you, uh, have been a- Yes...
• 22:35
you have been a guest on our show maybe, uh, this is maybe your fourth or fifth time. This is my thrice time. No way. Thrice. [laughs] Tre. Wow. So congratulations, and you have been a fabulous guest.
• 22:52
Can we, can we give you a back rub or, or anything else before we kick you off and- Let me-... move on to our next guest? Let me say this- Yes... let me say this. Go. You, you say something. Congratulations to you- Oh...
• 23:05
on your 100th show. [upbeat music] This is where everybody in the crowd claps.
• 23:21
[laughs] [cheers] Yay, clap. Clap. Yeah. Take a bow. Or pull up your shirts. Uh, this is probably the, the show where we'll, [laughs] I'll be arrested. [laughs] The 100th and last.
• 23:35
Or maybe, do you think they'll take you, or, or both of us then? I'm hoping I get arrested. [laughs] I heard they have McDonald's. Next raffle is for Gomez's bail. [laughs] Am I done? I think you're done.
• 23:49
Thank you, ladies and gentlemen. 'Cause here, here's your boy, Spinner. Spinner, I love you. Spinner. [laughs] This, this- I haven't been in a fire with you in a while. I know. I saved Sav's life once.
• 23:59
I'll tell you about the story. Actually, I just kept him dry. He did. He saved my life once. [laughs] Thanks a lot, folks. Uh, ride Surly Bikes, or don't. [laughs] Or wear Surly pants. All right.
• 24:10
[upbeat music] If you need a new pair of Surly pants- Sav from Surly, ladies and gentlemen... Sav Surly also has a new pair. Hey. All right.
• 24:15
We're gonna take a break, and we're going to do a little sound test for the officers of the Milwaukee Police Department so that we can get this thing, uh, legal, and I can stay out of jail. Yeah.
• 24:27
And JK is gonna raffle off some more stuff. [upbeat music] Everything. Everything gonna be all right this morning.
• 24:46
That's Chris Daisy on the guitar. [crowd cheering] Hey, I, I, I, I guess- Yeah... we're, we're back, right? We're back. Yeah, we're back, I think. Hey, we're back. We're back. Something's happening again.
• 25:00
It, it's time for that- Woo!... Fatty Farm Field Report thing. Hey, the Fatty Farm Field Report is brought to you by Quiring Cycle.

• 25:20
Hey, this week on the Fatty Farm Field Report, we're proud to welcome Mr. JP Lemire to the stage. [crowd cheering] Yes, yes, yes. Thanks, you guys. I wanna say
• 25:34
it's great being here in Milwaukee, coming over from Minneapolis, thanks for the invite. This is such a sweet venue. This is a cool party, but the band is cool. What, what, what's the band name again? Smooth Evil, baby.
• 25:47
Smooth Evil. [drumbeat] Smooth and evil? There you go. Smooth Evil. Now you got it. There he is. That's JP right there, folks. So JP, welcome to the big 100 shoe anniversary. Welcome, man.
• 26:05
Good to have you here. Thanks, you guys, so much. You know, we heard that your company has drilled deep into the earth and discovered huge deposits of dopamine. [laughs] What's that all about?
• 26:15
[laughs] You guys are funny. The dopamine is- [laughs] We try to be funny. [laughs]... kind of a... It's, it's the name. I don't know. Is that a, is that a illicit name? I mean, that's not like saying dope.
• 26:27
It's- It's dopamine in the brain... it's dopamine. It's a scientific term. Right. You gotta get up right like this on the mic, dude. [laughs] I'm, I'm telling you, you really gotta get up there, 'cause I can't hear you.
• 26:39
Get up where? No, right up at the microphone. Right, oh, right at the mic? There you go. Yeah. The dopamine, the name of the Dopamine, well, I thought it would be a cool bike name. This is live, man.
• 26:50
We don't edit anything. [laughs] Everyone is hearing it now. [laughs] So JP is here, actually- If you can't, I can hear it... to make a little announcement about a new dual suspension fat bike called the Dopamine.
• 27:04
So we were just being kind of, uh, dopey with some- Dopey... uh, mock comedy there about dopamine. But, uh, dopamine is a, it's... What's it called? It's a- A neurotransmitter... a neurotransmitter. Is it? Is that right?
• 27:19
It's a neurotransmitter? I think that's right. That sounds right, anyway. But it's a, it's a chemical created by the brain that, like- Makes you happy... would... Right, makes you happy.
• 27:29
Yeah, or when you do something that makes you happy, it's released maybe. I don't know the order. The ch- I think that we should find out how to make this, but the, your bike is a dual suspension fat bike.
• 27:39
Can, can somebody Google that, please? [laughs] So your, your bike is a dual suspension fat bike, all carbon, and you're famous kind of for open mold designs.
• 27:50
Can you tell us, uh, what design phil- philosophy that you followed, or maybe what suspension system that you are using? Right. So all it is is the, um, the most probably
• 28:02
popular or prevalent full suspension frame in the world is one of the open mold frames from Asia.
• 28:08
And that factory that makes that, we just had them make it in a fat bike version, so they just r- you know, widened out the rear, uh, chain stays a little bit and, uh, you know, redid the front.
• 28:23
You know, Lemire Cycles, we don't ever claim to, you know, come up with our own layup schedule, and we don't have, you know, any engineers on staff.
• 28:31
We just kind of basically trust the Asians that are already making everybody's bikes, and we just tell them what we want in terms of, you know, we want this head tube angle, we want this length of chain stay,
• 28:43
blah, blah, blah, whatever our requirements are, this size seat post, and they make it. And so it's basically that super popular open mold 29er and 650B full suspension frame that people have seen online for years.
• 28:58
And, um, it's a great solid design that, uh, is hopefully really good. We'll see. Right. You have samples that are on the water right now.
• 29:09
So they're, they're just a day or two away from being able to actually ride a Dopamine. Yeah. Well, we, we went through three iterations of it.
• 29:18
So the first thing we did is there was already one entity in Asia making a, a, a different full suspension fat bike. I mean, of course, the Bucksaw is the, you know, the main, the first full suspension popular fat bike.
• 29:35
So, uh, there was one factory that made a different version of it, s- what they saw as improvements. We tried that right away, 'cause we didn't wanna have to spend 15 grand on our own mold if we can avoid it, right?
• 29:49
We'd rather buy something that's good and, um, but we tried it, and there were some issues with it, and then we said, "Okay, we gotta pony up and do our own mold," which we did.
• 29:59
And then we did, uh, one version of that and, uh, fixed some issues, did a second version, and now the third version is what we feel good about releasing for prime time. Right on, man.
• 30:13
So, you know, with the ever niche-ifying fat bike market, I mean, things are going in a bunch of different directions. What, what made you decide to get into full suspension fat bikes?
• 30:22
Well, I just figure, like, where we are in Minneapolis, they have... We're lucky in Minneapolis, and you guys are here, too. You've got groomed trails, and groomed trails are awesome. You don't need suspension.
• 30:34
But out in Colorado, out, everywhere outside of the Midwest- You've got shared hiking trails with fat bike trails, and snowshoe trails, and dog trails, whatever it is, and you got that bumpy surface.
• 30:50
And same thing at our big place in Minneapolis called Theodore Wirth Park. It's just kind of bumpy, and, uh, I mean, not horrible bumps or not like the Rocky Mountains, right?
• 31:01
But just enough to, you know, give you the feedback on a fully rigid bike, which is what a fat bike is, typically. So I said, "Let's do a..."
• 31:10
And then, "Let's do a full suspension fat bike," but then you think about all the other rides.
• 31:16
I mean, I just plan to ride it in the marathon race class all summer with three-inch tires and 650B+ wheels, and I just think it's, for a lot of people, it's the do-everything bike.
• 31:26
You just buy one off-road bike, one road bike, and- It's the Holy Grail, for sure. Hopefully. The quiver killer, as they say. Yeah, w- the, it is a, it, it's a
• 31:40
mind-blower the first time that you ride a 22 to 24-pound fat bike. It really becomes more than a fat bike. It becomes just your everything bike. Mm-hmm.
• 31:51
I, I, I asked myself, "Why am I gonna ride my gravel bike, which is, like, 30 pounds, when I can ride a 24-pound fat bike with 20 PSI?" And it is like, well, I've been, I've been doing some of that, and it, it...
• 32:04
I didn't believe it at first, but I think that a super light carbon bike is, man, it's, it's the one bike that you need. The desert island bike. Well, JP,
• 32:18
when you get that, uh, when you get that dopamine shipment in from China- [laughs]... you gotta, uh, you gotta definitely give us a call, man. I'll sell you guys some dopamine. Well, for you guys, I'll give it to you.
• 32:30
Listen, I'll give you a little... The first hit of the dopamine is free. After that, we start charging. [laughs] This sounds remarkably familiar.
• 32:39
Well, JP, I knew you would be, I knew you would be a good guest, man, so thanks for coming to Milwaukee. Yeah, thank you. Let's, uh, let's give Mr. JP Lamere a big hand. JP Lamere. [cheering] [upbeat music] Thanks.
• 32:53
All right, we're gonna wrap up this nonsense. Yeah, we can let the band do what it does and make us look good. We like to, uh, end the show as we always do, by thanking Surly for their support.
• 33:06
Surly makes bikes, parts, and chaos. So stick around, studio audience. Smooth Evil's gonna rock the place a bit more, and we have El Ramos set to come up and do a little bit later on.
• 33:21
Uh, for you, our radio listeners, we'll catch up with you sometime soon. Right on. And we also are gonna go play bike games. Bike games. Mr. Eric Sovereign is going to lead us in bike fun.
• 33:31
So stick around for some music and some bike fun. Thanks, guys. Until then...
• 33:37
[upbeat music] [singing] All alone in the dark.
• 36:20
In the cold, in the park. I turn around and I penetrate. With a kiss to me when I'm feeling great. Oh.
• 36:37
  And I do it again.
• 36:49
[singing] Oh, the haves, the have-nots.
• 37:11
Oh, the needs, oh, they don't stop. I give them love and I give them speed. I give them everything they, they need. And I'd do it again.
• 37:31
  Oh, I'd do it again.
• 37:36
I'd do it again All right, all right, all right.
• 38:47
That was Smooth Evil with Triple Anthem, and finishing off our Big Show 100 is El Rongo and their ditty, White Crane Ridge. See you folks next time.
• 39:03
[singing] The crater reaches cold most of the night.
• 39:36
Get off the land, but not without a fight. Go to the hills, through the swamps, torture the seas. Fight for the land and our names and our history.
• 40:05
As it's high, we wait on the moon. By our drive and our strike presumed.
• 40:20
Got a sound and a move and a torch like a thief in the night. Make our move when we see the whites of their eyes.
• 40:33
  The
• 40:42
time has come, tonight we rise.
• 41:27
From the streets, from the parks, in the hills at the next high tide. Guided by the stars, sacred as the plague. Take back what's once ours in our fathers' name
