Transcript
- 0:19Speaker 1: Hey, Hurdler's EMILYA.
- 0:21Speaker 2: Badi here chiming in with another installment of five Minute Friday.
- 0:26Speaker 2: I have a favor to ask you right off the bat,
- 0:28Speaker 2: the first thing you hear in this episode, I want
- 0:31Speaker 2: your feedback in the show notes. I'm including a link.
- 0:36Speaker 2: I am doing a lot of planning for Hurdle in
- 0:40Speaker 2: twenty twenty one, and I want to know what you like,
- 0:44Speaker 2: what's sticking, what's resonating. All the good things, maybe some
- 0:49Speaker 2: of the bad things. I just want to get on
- 0:51Speaker 2: the same page because I want, if you're coming back
- 0:53Speaker 2: to this feed week after week, to be giving you
- 0:56Speaker 2: content that you care about and that resonates with you,
- 0:58Speaker 2: and that I I am just doing something good. So
- 1:03Speaker 2: please show notes, Google form Hurdle Feedback Survey.
- 1:07Speaker 1: I'm all heres. This week, I'm.
- 1:10Speaker 2: Chatting about my hair. I know that's like a random
- 1:14Speaker 2: thing to bring up on the podcast, but for a
- 1:17Speaker 2: few days this week, I wore my natural hair and
- 1:20Speaker 2: I was getting a ton of feedback on it, and
- 1:22Speaker 2: it made me want to bring this conversation to the show.
- 1:27Speaker 2: So here's the deal. When I was in high school,
- 1:30Speaker 2: I used to wear my natural curly hair all the
- 1:32Speaker 2: time and I'm not talking about like the curling iron
- 1:35Speaker 2: waves that you might see.
- 1:37Speaker 1: Like, I don't even know who to give an example of.
- 1:40Speaker 2: I always feel like I want to say Kardashian curling
- 1:42Speaker 2: iron waves, but maybe that's like Kardashian circa two thousand
- 1:46Speaker 2: and seventeen.
- 1:47Speaker 1: Maybe not now. I don't know. A lot of people
- 1:50Speaker 1: wave their.
- 1:50Speaker 2: Hair with a curling iron I am one of them.
- 1:52Speaker 2: I love to do it that way. It makes me
- 1:53Speaker 2: feel really pretty and attractive. I'm sitting here with my
- 1:56Speaker 2: hand under my chin, like if you could see me.
- 1:59Speaker 2: It just makes me feel nice.
- 2:01Speaker 1: Anyway.
- 2:01Speaker 2: I used to wear my hair though my natural curls
- 2:04Speaker 2: all the time, which are definitely tighter. It's like a
- 2:07Speaker 2: bigger style. If you go on over to the newsletter
- 2:11Speaker 2: plug link in the show notes, you'll see a photo
- 2:14Speaker 2: of me with my curly hair. In high school, I
- 2:17Speaker 2: was doing a lot of weight cycling. Then I was
- 2:19Speaker 2: constantly in and out of weight watchers meetings, and at
- 2:24Speaker 2: this time, when I was wearing my hair like this
- 2:26Speaker 2: from high school to college, I was feeling really uncomfortable
- 2:29Speaker 2: in my own body. I was also constantly wearing my
- 2:33Speaker 2: hair like this when I was at my heaviest my
- 2:35Speaker 2: freshman year of college. And so when I think about
- 2:39Speaker 2: that time in my life when I wasn't the happiest,
- 2:41Speaker 2: when I didn't have a really good self image, I
- 2:44Speaker 2: envisioned myself with this hairstyle. So fast forward to now,
- 2:49Speaker 2: it's like, God, ten years or so at least, I
- 2:53Speaker 2: look completely different than I did in high school and
- 2:56Speaker 2: at the beginning of college. I have had for a
- 2:59Speaker 2: long time trouble disassociating this hairstyle with the emily that was.
- 3:07Speaker 2: Like when I look at myself in the mirror and
- 3:09Speaker 2: my hair is naturally curly, I'm like seeing something that's
- 3:13Speaker 2: not real. Like I know that I do not currently
- 3:17Speaker 2: look like I did back then, but I look in
- 3:19Speaker 2: the mirror and I feel like I see the rounder cheeks.
- 3:23Speaker 2: I see some of that, you know, negativity, maybe that
- 3:27Speaker 2: surrounded how I felt at that time. It's like I'm
- 3:30Speaker 2: instantly transported back to so many of the scenarios that
- 3:33Speaker 2: made me feel lesser than, like my high school cafeteria
- 3:37Speaker 2: and the people that would make fun of me, or
- 3:39Speaker 2: god knows what. It's been interesting this week because I
- 3:43Speaker 2: don't know what got into me on I think it
- 3:45Speaker 2: was Wednesday to just like rocket naturally, but I did
- 3:50Speaker 2: and maybe for the first time in a I don't know,
- 3:55Speaker 2: like I don't want to say ever, but maybe the
- 3:59Speaker 2: first time in a life long time, I did my
- 4:01Speaker 2: hair like this, which it's currently the same curls right now,
- 4:05Speaker 2: and I felt really confident and really just home, like
- 4:12Speaker 2: this is who I am. I'm not sitting here saying
- 4:15Speaker 2: like I'm just gonna suddenly wear it like this exclusively
- 4:18Speaker 2: all the time, but I am saying, and I'm telling
- 4:21Speaker 2: you the story because I want to articulate that just
- 4:23Speaker 2: because someone changes, maybe losing weight made you a happier person,
- 4:28Speaker 2: maybe gaining weight made you a happier person, that doesn't
- 4:31Speaker 2: mean that there isn't going to be legacy work to do.
- 4:34Speaker 2: I am still doing the work. I am still working
- 4:38Speaker 2: on my inner dialogue and my overall body positivity and
- 4:42Speaker 2: embracing who it is that I've become because I am
- 4:44Speaker 2: proud of her. And I'm sure that maybe you have
- 4:48Speaker 2: something that you struggle with that transports you back to
- 4:52Speaker 2: a different point. And it's just so important for us
- 4:55Speaker 2: to recognize who it is that we really are and
- 4:58Speaker 2: to see what is actually happening in front of us.
- 5:01Speaker 2: If we want to continue to move forward. So I
- 5:04Speaker 2: prompt for you this week, what is one story that
- 5:08Speaker 2: you are telling yourself that is not true? What is
- 5:12Speaker 2: one story that you are telling yourself that is not true?
- 5:16Speaker 2: And you need to let go of listener question of
- 5:20Speaker 2: the Week this week. I feel like I cannot stick
- 5:22Speaker 2: with journaling no matter how many times I try. How
- 5:24Speaker 2: do I do it? I have gone through so many
- 5:27Speaker 2: different evolutions of journaling, Like I had a one line
- 5:31Speaker 2: a day journal that I used for about a year.
- 5:33Speaker 2: I've had like other various prompted journals, some that I
- 5:36Speaker 2: still use sporadically. I've used simple mind journals, like I've
- 5:40Speaker 2: done all of the things and the two biggest tips
- 5:43Speaker 2: that I can offer you one journal at a time
- 5:45Speaker 2: that invigorates you instead of makes you feel dread like
- 5:49Speaker 2: for me, I'll compare this to meditation. I do not
- 5:52Speaker 2: love meditating first thing in the morning, but I do
- 5:54Speaker 2: love meditating like in the middle of my work day
- 5:56Speaker 2: when I need a breath of fresh air. The middle
- 5:59Speaker 2: of the day at meditation practice works for me. The
- 6:01Speaker 2: morning meditation practice does not. So find a time for
- 6:04Speaker 2: journaling that invigorates you and feels right my next tip
- 6:08Speaker 2: is then find a journaling style that feels good for you.
- 6:12Speaker 2: I mentioned a variety of different ways that you can
- 6:14Speaker 2: do it for me. Right now, the lined journal and
- 6:17Speaker 2: ending each day with something I'm grateful for just feels right.
- 6:21Speaker 2: It might not feel that way forever, but for now
- 6:23Speaker 2: it feels good. So lean into a journaling practice that
- 6:27Speaker 2: is convenient and invigorates you and also excites you in
- 6:31Speaker 2: the style that you are journaling. If you have a
- 6:34Speaker 2: listener question, I'm all ears, you can always send those
- 6:37Speaker 2: over to me via email or DM at Emily at
- 6:40Speaker 2: Hurdle dot us or on Instagram at Hurdle Podcast or
- 6:44Speaker 2: at Emily a Body. And now finishing off with highlights
- 6:47Speaker 2: of the week. Links to all this goodness can be
- 6:50Speaker 2: found in the show notes read Uncomfortable Conversations with the
- 6:54Speaker 2: Black Man by Emmanuel at Sho. So I've highlighted a
- 6:58Speaker 2: manual before this. This man is such a good hearted human.
- 7:03Speaker 2: You have definitely by now watched his viral videos on
- 7:07Speaker 2: YouTube or Instagram or Facebook. And this week he released
- 7:11Speaker 2: his first book. I obviously haven't read it yet. The
- 7:14Speaker 2: reviews are calling it a perfect read for those who
- 7:17Speaker 2: might be intimidated by Waightier books like How to Be
- 7:20Speaker 2: an Anti Racist, so I'm amped for him. I loved
- 7:23Speaker 2: that yesterday. I think he posted that they sold eighteen
- 7:26Speaker 2: thousand copies in the first day, so definitely give that
- 7:31Speaker 2: a look. See listen Coffee's Overcold through with Emma Abrahamson.
- 7:36Speaker 2: I know that many of you follow along with Emma Abrahamson.
- 7:39Speaker 2: How could you not?
- 7:40Speaker 1: She is electric and such a good human.
- 7:43Speaker 2: We met a couple of years ago, maybe just over
- 7:45Speaker 2: a year ago, at Nike World Headquarters, and have stayed
- 7:48Speaker 2: in touch ever since. This week on the show, she
- 7:50Speaker 2: is chatting with Kelly Roberts. Kelly is a friend of mine.
- 7:53Speaker 2: She's also the founder of the Sportsbrus Squad movement and
- 7:56Speaker 2: the bad Ass Lady Gang. I think this combo is
- 8:00Speaker 2: completely up the hurdler's alleys, so check that out. Watch
- 8:05Speaker 2: If you haven't done this yet, I would be surprised.
- 8:08Speaker 2: The Queen's Gambit on Netflix. I think last week maybe
- 8:12Speaker 2: I put out a feeler on social media looking for
- 8:14Speaker 2: a new show to watch.
- 8:15Speaker 1: I watched all.
- 8:16Speaker 2: I think seven episodes of The Queen's Gambit within forty
- 8:20Speaker 2: eight hours can't reckon enough. I think that Anya Taylor
- 8:24Speaker 2: Joy the lead actress is absolutely stunning, and the storyline
- 8:29Speaker 2: is basically this girl that became an orphan because of
- 8:33Speaker 2: an accident. At the orphanage, she's playing chess in the
- 8:36Speaker 2: basement with one of the maintenance guys. She becomes a
- 8:39Speaker 2: chess wizard and it follows her story into that life
- 8:43Speaker 2: and just such a cool storyline.
- 8:46Speaker 1: Ten out of ten.
- 8:47Speaker 2: And lastly, I talked about journaling, so this is appropriate, right.
- 8:53Speaker 2: You have got to check out. I think this is
- 8:54Speaker 2: the coolest gift idea. Baron Fag has a limited edition
- 8:58Speaker 2: Letters to the Future journal. It is basically designed to
- 9:03Speaker 2: write letters to yourself and it comes with envelopes that
- 9:06Speaker 2: you can seal to open at a later date. I
- 9:09Speaker 2: know it's kind of wacky, but I think that's what
- 9:11Speaker 2: makes it a really cool gift idea, because how cool
- 9:14Speaker 2: would it be if you once a month wrote a
- 9:17Speaker 2: letter to yourself that you would then open that month,
- 9:20Speaker 2: a year, two years, three years later.
- 9:22Speaker 1: Now.
- 9:22Speaker 2: I know some of you who are maybe organization freaks
- 9:26Speaker 2: or minimalists unlike me, maybe may.
- 9:30Speaker 1: Cringe at this idea, but I just I think it's great.
- 9:33Speaker 2: I do, I do.
- 9:34Speaker 1: I think that's it for now.
- 9:35Speaker 2: The last thing I do want to throw into the
- 9:37Speaker 2: mix here if you haven't seen yet, there are a
- 9:40Speaker 2: ton of new hurdle sessions coming up in the next
- 9:42Speaker 2: few weeks. I've got intro to Freelance Writing, take Your
- 9:46Speaker 2: Running to the Next Level, an awesome end of your
- 9:48Speaker 2: goal Setting workshop, and the Handling Hurdle Moments Seminar. I
- 9:53Speaker 2: did a Q and A about the Handling Hurdle Moments
- 9:55Speaker 2: Seminar earlier this week. I am just so lit and
- 9:59Speaker 2: fired up about all of these and I would love
- 10:02Speaker 2: to see you in one of them. The link again
- 10:05Speaker 2: to sign up for any of this is in the
- 10:07Speaker 2: show notes, and I'm also offering, because you're still listening
- 10:10Speaker 2: to this, an exclusive coupon code for you to use.
- 10:15Speaker 2: If you head on over to the link of the
- 10:16Speaker 2: show notes to sign up, use the coupon code podcast
- 10:21Speaker 2: to get five dollars off any of the session. Again,
- 10:24Speaker 2: the coupon code for the sessions is podcast only, good
- 10:28Speaker 2: for the first twenty five redemptions on the site. How
- 10:35Speaker 2: that was fun at Emilaly Body and at Hurdle Podcast
- 10:39Speaker 2: Another Hurdle Conquered.
- 10:41Speaker 1: Catch you guys next time.
