Transcript
- 0:11Let's go over the rules. Wes, I remember the rules. You sure?
- 0:16Don't open the door for anyone. Don't make any noise. Don't draw attention.
- 0:20Don't hesitate for a second. I don't care who it is.
- 0:24Okay? Okay. All right. You call me if there's an emergency. If not,
- 0:29I'll reach out to you. We got this.
- 0:36All right everybody welcome back to another halloween month three quarters.
- 0:42And we peppered in another one here there's a fan pic from one of our listeners
- 0:47frank shout out to you frank thanks for reaching out and he mentioned a film
- 0:53called werewolves i happened to see this last year i saw it in the theater you
- 0:57saw this was in the theater that's got a theater release? I didn't.
- 1:02Universal Pictures. Right? Yeah.
- 1:05I was directed by Stephen C. Miller. Guy's talent. Let's kind of stand him.
- 1:09But he had some good stuff.
- 1:12A Silent Night was really good. If you like slasher films, watch Silent Night.
- 1:16It's brilliant. It's the first remake of Silent Night, Deadly Night.
- 1:19It wasn't really a remake. It was a subtle kind of remake, but not.
- 1:26Reimagining, as they call it. Yeah, I guess you can see it that way.
- 1:29And then Under the Bed, two good films he's done I really enjoy.
- 1:32But it's not about that. This film's not about direction.
- 1:36It's not about a terrible lot, to be honest. Well, this is about FX creature
- 1:42feature god, Alec Illus.
- 1:45We've talked to him plenty of times. We're talking Alien franchise, all of them.
- 1:52We're talking Tremors. We're talking Hollow Man. We're talking Starship Troopers. We're talking prey.
- 1:59This guy is FX God next to the men we've talked to before, Rob Bottin,
- 2:06Greg DiToro, and so forth and so forth. Savini.
- 2:09Now, Al Gilles did all the practical effects for this film.
- 2:13And all the werewolf suits and stuff. And that's how I wanted to see.
- 2:18Don't care. Don't give me a, I don't need a plot. Because, well,
- 2:22we do have one, but it's batshit crazy.
- 2:24What's this film about? Is it about vampires? You know, the title is sort of in your face. Yeah.
- 2:34So they want to do a practical, there's obviously some CGI with the transformations, which is fine.
- 2:40And actually it's quite good when they blend it together. but they wanted to
- 2:45do mostly practical and they tried to do that now,
- 2:51I enjoyed the film. I grew up, I love my creature features.
- 2:56The howling, anything Joe Dante touched. Joe Dante was prana, the howling, gremlins.
- 3:03You have, you know, I didn't like critters. A lot of people like critters.
- 3:06But in the 80s, you had a lot of creature features. Tremors were your creature features. Ghoulies.
- 3:11And yeah, ghoulies, ghoulies. We have to get to that. We've had that in a long time. Yeah.
- 3:17Ghoulies. There's like four of those fucking things. Yeah, I know.
- 3:19A creature retrospective. But there's a charm to those films.
- 3:25And I think people, fans of those films, have lost their way.
- 3:32And I don't think they really get what this film was doing.
- 3:36You know, we all grew up with it, especially my age group, grew up with movies
- 3:41like this. And we fucking loved it. Popcorn film.
- 3:44That's all it is. They're not trying to reinvent the wheel.
- 3:47Fucking hell, they're not. That's it. They're not. So anybody who's trying to
- 3:51find layers in this fucking film, fuck off.
- 3:55Go watch your fucking folk shit or your cult shit. I don't care.
- 4:02This is for creature feature fans. If you're not seeing the layers or you're
- 4:07peeling back what they're trying to do here, then this movie isn't for you.
- 4:13It's a B-movie schlock. It's just like Snakes on a Plane. It tells you on the
- 4:19title, you just say that Trevor What's this about?
- 4:22Well Werewolves But at the same time, you hit the nail on the head Just a couple
- 4:27of sentences earlier Where you said that those older ones Have a charm to them,
- 4:34And sadly This one is For me anyway And while I also appreciate What they're
- 4:41doing and what they're trying to do Especially with the practical stuff and
- 4:44all This does lack charm for me.
- 4:49Well, let's jump into it because we got to dive in this really complex plot.
- 4:55There's been a supermoon.
- 4:59Supermoon's coming. Yeah. I love it.
- 5:02I love the fact that you pretty much made this The Purge, but with werewolves
- 5:05and starring The Purge star, Frank Grillo. Yes.
- 5:10First, let's get our boy Frank out of the way. I love Frank Grillo.
- 5:13Underrated actor. You guys have to see a movie called Boss Level,
- 5:17him and Mel Gibson. It's Groundhog Day action film. It's wonderful.
- 5:21I don't know how he never got theater-esque release, boss level.
- 5:25Joe Carnahan did it. It's so batshit crazy and awesome action film.
- 5:31We're going to get to it, boss level.
- 5:33He's responsible for two of the Paris movies, the two best ones.
- 5:37He played Crossbones, was promised to be this huge villain because Crossbones
- 5:42is a big villain for Captain America. They killed him off.
- 5:45So he got fucked over by Marvel.
- 5:48And now he's with DC, so good on him. I like Frank Grillo. He's got that quality.
- 5:57He's kind of like Jason Statham. I was just about to say.
- 6:01Jason Statham. Oh, well, no, there's a difference. Jason Statham. I love you, Jason.
- 6:05You know how much I love Jason Statham. But Frank Grillo is kind of like the
- 6:09Jason Statham, but has a slightly more elevated...
- 6:14He's a little better in the acting. I don't think he's enough to do here.
- 6:17Well, I mean, it's fucking werewolves, you know what I mean? It's not Shakespeare.
- 6:21That's my point. Yeah, I don't think he's, in terms of being an action star,
- 6:26he's no Stallone or Arnie. Okay, that's my point.
- 6:31Give me some of his action films that he's done.
- 6:35Well, that's what I'm saying. Well, this one, I'm specifically referring to
- 6:38this one, which he set up as an action star here.
- 6:42But you get my point. Yeah. He's not an action star. That's not fair.
- 6:45Yeah. You can't judge him based on this. That's not fair. Well,
- 6:49he's doing an action star here.
- 6:51Yeah. I've seen his other films. I know what Frank Grohl gives.
- 6:55I'm fine with Frank Grohl's performance in this.
- 6:57But, you know, you can't judge a man's career if you haven't seen it.
- 7:01I'm not. I'm speaking specifically about this.
- 7:05All right. But you said not an action star. He's done action films. He's done it quite good.
- 7:08I gave him the Purge series, and Barslav was fucking amazing.
- 7:12God, he has to see Barslav. Underrated, Jim. Okay.
- 7:16I tell you, he can act. And actually, it's the best here. No, you're fine.
- 7:20You just said Frank Grillo's piece of shit. Real nice. Real classy move there, Trevor.
- 7:24Real classy. Not at all, Frank. I think he's all right, but he's no action star to me based on this.
- 7:30But anyway, I'll tell you someone who can act and who I've always liked,
- 7:34and he's basically the best person there. Let me guess, La Bamba.
- 7:37Yep, Lou Diamond. Well, La Bamba, yes, but he's more Chavez to me from the Youngblood's films.
- 7:45See, that's the problem. He's not good in this. He's not. He has a presence. He's quite bad.
- 7:50He doesn't. He does. And I'll tell you what, you're pissed off Frank Grillo
- 7:55who said he can't act and he's a piece of shit which I can't believe you said that.
- 7:59But Lou Diamond Phillips he's the worst thing in this and it's because you're
- 8:03so you're so clouded by 80s La Bamba that you're not seeing he has a presence yeah,
- 8:13and I like get me wrong I like Lou Diamond Phillips well not according to what
- 8:17you've just said there but not in this film he's terrible no no he is,
- 8:22don't get me wrong He's not up against much because everyone else You know all
- 8:25of the supporting cast Especially the two main female characters And that stupid
- 8:29kid Are basically cardboard cutouts,
- 8:32Lou Diamond Phillips, in the context of this film, whenever he's on the screen
- 8:37and it's not very long, it's basically an extended cameo, he is the best thing
- 8:42about it and the best thing about this film overall, I would say actually.
- 8:46No, no, no. Best thing in this thing is the Wolves. Period. Plus he's Gervais.
- 8:51The Wolves are... You need to get over it. You got a hard-on for young guys.
- 8:56You need to pull... Okay, you just gotta stop. You fucking just pull it out and wham.
- 9:04Anybody from Young Guns is on this podcast. You pull it out and you wham.
- 9:08You're just fucking, yeah. Chavez.
- 9:13Your mind is in the gutter because I don't even think like that.
- 9:16You know what I mean? It's obviously a reflection of yourself.
- 9:20And there's some sort of guilt on there for all of the Indiana Jones films and
- 9:24all of the rest that you whanked over.
- 9:26But anyway, But yes, I like Lou Diamond Phillips.
- 9:32I've always liked Lou Diamond Phillips. He was in one with Keith Sufferland
- 9:34called Renegades, I remember. Yeah, I saw that.
- 9:38I've always liked him. I think he's the only one here that has a presence. Sorry, Mr. Grillo.
- 9:45I'm sure you're a great guy and all the rest, but I think you're let down here.
- 9:51But we'll get to more of it later. As for the other actors in it, Frank Grillo's okay.
- 9:57I'll be honest. he is okay here but for me Lou Diamond is the best as for the
- 10:03other actors alright okay go ahead okay 20 minutes 20 minutes,
- 10:11yeah need your kleenex.
- 10:16All right here's the plot it's intense
- 10:19oh yeah so every once in a while this supermoon event happens and what it does
- 10:26is glare from the supermoon causes changes into the people's dna turning them
- 10:31to werewolves yep now another one's back the supermoon is back and now everyone's in lockdown,
- 10:39kind of like a purge style. Lock everything down, blah, blah, blah.
- 10:42At the same time, you can let me finish or are you just going to keep interrupting me? Go ahead.
- 10:48I can't wait to talk to Frank Grillo. So now, Wesley, played by Frank Grillo,
- 10:56and Doc, played by Lou Don Phillips, who you said is the greatest actor of all time.
- 11:02Better than most? Have a serum that will if this happens again,
- 11:09won't cause people to change.
- 11:11And it's called Moonsheen. Is it Moonsheen or Moonscream?
- 11:16I was a bit confused. No, it's Moonscream.
- 11:20Like Moonscream? Right, right, right.
- 11:22Okay. Come on, man. Put it together. I thought it was like Moonscream as in,
- 11:27you know, scream at the moon type thing.
- 11:29That doesn't make any sense. Why would they call that? Because it warms at the moon.
- 11:33It hurls at the moon. It screams at the moon. You know?
- 11:36That's fucking... You would be a fucking horrible marketing executive.
- 11:40If I had to let me write it, I'd write it a lot better. Well,
- 11:43I had Moon Screen for the start.
- 11:46So, they have all these test subjects.
- 11:50And so all these test subjects are going to, they're all, they're all volunteers.
- 11:54These are good things, by the way. Three of them didn't want to be there, I guess.
- 11:56I do love them once. So we're going ahead of ourselves.
- 11:59We got Wesley, Amy, Doc, Cody, Lucy, Amy, Reagan, Evan, Miles.
- 12:04Okay. There's your, there's your, your, your cast of nobody besides Wesley.
- 12:10And we find out that Wesley's brother was killed. He was a firefighter. Yes.
- 12:16And he's kind of looking over Lucy and Emma. and he boards up their house and
- 12:21he says, I got to go and we got to try out this, you know, moon screen crap.
- 12:26And that's the whole point of him. Yeah. His whole thing is he needs to get
- 12:32back to their house to save them.
- 12:34And then there's a story. That's all it is, guys. You don't need any.
- 12:37You don't need any. That's it. There's no subplot.
- 12:40And don't even say that's it because the shit you listen, you watch and you
- 12:44get past it too because it's so bad, it's good.
- 12:47Fuck off. this no I
- 12:50just wanted werewolves eating stuff and killing people and creepy werewolves
- 12:55and we got that but it's all about the delivery and the charm and it is lacking
- 12:59here I would say don't use my word don't use my word no I'm fine I said charm
- 13:03you don't own the word yeah it is my word I use whatever word I want it's my word TM TM.
- 13:09TM right right,
- 13:12anyway I'm going to be fair here like I always am and I'm going to say no you're
- 13:17not I did like the scenes where they had, like, the ones who they were basically
- 13:22experimenting on with the moon screen.
- 13:27And I thought those scenes worked well, and they do set it up well.
- 13:31The problem is, the rest of it turns into a nothing burger, where it's just...
- 13:37There's some good ideas throughout this.
- 13:39I mean, I like the beneath-the-planet-of-the-apes type cult who were sort of
- 13:44living underground, you know, in that supermarket-y thing, but it's not explored.
- 13:48There's good ideas here, but they aren't explored.
- 13:51You know, you said the exact same thing about House by the Cemetery.
- 13:54The exact same review, but that gets passed.
- 13:57Well, with House by the Cemetery, it has so much more... Let me finish.
- 14:03What? It has so much more artistic merit.
- 14:06What does it? What artistic merit? Of course it does.
- 14:10What's the artistic merit? Give me the artistic merit in House by the Cemetery.
- 14:13Well, the flipping ideas on display. The look, the aesthetic.
- 14:18And the sheer over-the-top sort of craziness of it.
- 14:22Of course it does, 100%. This is just too bland.
- 14:28Put it like this here. See, in 40 years' time, do you think people are going
- 14:33to be still talking about and remembering werewolves, whereas they still are
- 14:36with Fussie's films? Yep.
- 14:39Right you know yeah i'm struggling
- 14:42you'll be in your wheelchair right you'll be
- 14:45in your wheelchair rolling yourself somewhere
- 14:48and you'll go past future
- 14:52shop and and there'll
- 14:55be like the 20th anniversary war werewolves
- 14:58and there'll be the eyes of people waiting to get in
- 15:01and then there'll be there'll be the heist house by
- 15:04the cemetery you'll be the only one wheeling in and you
- 15:07couldn't get it because they won't have a rap for you so there you
- 15:09go what shit are
- 15:13you talking about anyway okay listen
- 15:17listen in my future wheelchair i'm gonna have like some sort of rockets on it
- 15:20and i'm gonna blow the shit out of you standing in line watching werewolf waiting
- 15:24for the 20th anniversary screening of werewolves i'm gonna shoot the shit out
- 15:28of you like i don't know some sort of cheesy early 90s action film so what you're
- 15:32saying here is i make a joke you know,
- 15:37humorous or not you turn it into killing a bunch of people.
- 15:42In a line waiting to go to see a movie yeah because it's a shit movie so that's
- 15:46how much that's how much I feel about it you know,
- 15:50shit yeah and then I'll just wheel myself off and watch House Bender Cemetery,
- 15:56with Bob yeah but you can't get in House Bender Cemetery has Bob,
- 16:00this alright it has Lou Diamond Phillips but apart from that it has no one else,
- 16:06Wow.
- 16:09So it's,
- 16:12I do love when Amy's husband, he's in the car, she's one of the doctors,
- 16:18and Miles, her husband turns to her and goes, you need to keep in mind,
- 16:23I volunteered to do this.
- 16:25He volunteered to test this shit and become a wolf. Yeah.
- 16:28And he kisses his wife goodbye. I mean, it's like, really?
- 16:31I mean, what the fuck? It was just, It was a powerful moment.
- 16:36A tip between the Dr. Amy and Miles, her husband, who's going to go be a werewolf. Tell me this.
- 16:42Does the supermoon affect everyone or does it, because it's sort of,
- 16:47at the start, they're sort of saying,
- 16:49you know, with the whole sort of, you know, the text that comes up on the screen,
- 16:53it sort of says that it only affected a certain amount of the population.
- 16:57It only depends on the people's DNA that it affects. Right. But the people who
- 17:01they don't know who it doesn't affect.
- 17:04So those people are still going to stay indoors because they don't want to take a chance.
- 17:07Yeah. And obviously there are wolves on the rampage as well.
- 17:09So they don't want murdered either.
- 17:11But, but later. That's why they, that's why they have to lock up.
- 17:13Because the wolves are coming. But later on. Yeah. I know that.
- 17:16But later on, it sort of suggested that it affects basically anyone that sees a super moon.
- 17:21Or is it because this is a different super moon, which is even more powerful? I don't know.
- 17:27Enlighten me. I don't know. No, I don't know. I think you're reading Beyond the Supermoon thing.
- 17:34It's a subtext. I'm trying to get to the subtext of War Wounds,
- 17:37you know? If you... You know what?
- 17:39That's your problem. And maybe that's Frank's. Sorry, Frank.
- 17:42I'm calling out a listener. Oh, dear.
- 17:44He's a nasty piece of work, especially this morning when he hasn't had his coffee,
- 17:48or his wank over at Indiana Jones.
- 17:51I love how you twist my words and you're making a joke on something I already
- 17:56made against you. You can't flip it.
- 17:58It doesn't make any sense. Well, I found it funny, so whatever.
- 18:04Jesus. Oh, my God. Anyway.
- 18:08I want to watch Werewolves again. I know what you think. So,
- 18:11yeah. So, all the test subjects, they think it's working because they're not getting moonbeamed.
- 18:18And they think it's working. But yet, no, it ends up, there's just a delay.
- 18:23And they end up turning to Werewolves. Cool. Actually, cool transformation scene.
- 18:26Again, these scenes are good.
- 18:27I do, and then we see our boy, Lou Diamond, turn into one. The bomber turns into it. Yes.
- 18:33And the chaos, they break out and chaos ensues.
- 18:38And I do like some of the creepiness. There's a nice shot where you cut to a
- 18:43neighbor girl, and she's in the kitchen by herself.
- 18:46She's looking for her mom, and she's going back and forth from the house.
- 18:50One long shot, and she stops. and in the kitchen, in the blur,
- 18:57there's one of those big walls standing there.
- 18:59It's a nice scene. She actually comes back into the film.
- 19:02It's a gun-toting neighbor who's turned into one, isn't it?
- 19:06You know, Cody ends up turning into one, too. Yeah. That's actually a nice shot
- 19:09where the werewolves want to get in, and so they take a fridge because he's
- 19:14got this compound in front of his fucking yard, and they take the fridge and
- 19:18throw it through his house.
- 19:19Yeah. Not to eat them, but to turn them. It's kind of clever.
- 19:24And it's a nice shot when they throw the fridge. It's slow motion. He flies backwards.
- 19:29It's done slow-mo. It's a nice little shot, actually. And then he looks up,
- 19:32he sees the moon, and he turns.
- 19:34And he knew right away gung-ho nut job was going to be bad wolf guy yeah of
- 19:38course obviously he's the main human villain for want of a better word yeah,
- 19:44but there's something when they're when they're taking over the lab and,
- 19:48there's some nice shots with the wolves full body and the one thing I do like
- 19:52about it it doesn't cheat you see the wolves you see the wolves the entire film
- 19:56it's not like oh is that really a wolf whose head hiding in the background no
- 20:00it's a wolf so they show you the full on suits and everything.
- 20:05The wolves do look well They're not as good as Say maybe the likes of an American
- 20:10werewolf In London or dog soldiers But they do look well I would have preferred
- 20:14there is a bit of CGI And I didn't like the CGI,
- 20:18Whenever they used it so I would have preferred them Just to have stuck to practical
- 20:21But at the same time They don't use CGI in the wolves The only time they use
- 20:24CGI is when they're turning,
- 20:27Well they couldn't afford to be transformed Yes that's why I'm saying I get it,
- 20:31Oh, okay. So why judge it? Because we're here to critique a film.
- 20:36Between your hatred for Frank Grillo.
- 20:40And now this. Frank, buddy. Frank Grillo. Because there's two Franks here.
- 20:44There's Frank, the listener, and there's... I love both Franks.
- 20:49So, yeah. I like the whole lab scene. They play a lot with, you know...
- 20:54They have a lot of fog machines. Yeah.
- 20:57Just conveniently. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, and they do that so the wolves come out,
- 21:02which I kind of like. I think it's kind of neat when you see the wolves coming
- 21:04through the fog and steam, whatever the fuck it is, and the blood is coming off.
- 21:09There's one where one werewolf bites the guy's face off. Yeah. That was good.
- 21:17But I do like the fact that what it's missing is, and I'll be honest with you, I'm more just laughing.
- 21:23I'm having a good time with it. I enjoy, I like werewolves.
- 21:26So I get why people aren't going to be a fan of it. what it's missing is tension and that's the big.
- 21:33I'm sticking up for it because I think it gets bullied I don't like films that
- 21:36get bullied that have talent like Frank Grillo in it and Alec Gillis who's a
- 21:41genius as I mentioned at the beginning of the podcast,
- 21:43and so I'm not going to insult the man's work because of what he's given us
- 21:46he's an Academy Award winning filmmaker I have nothing against him yeah you
- 21:50did you just peed all over him and anyways.
- 21:53So that's why I'm sticking up for it guys yeah it's not it's a sci-fi movie
- 21:58the upgrade is what it is.
- 22:00But I'll tell you what, it is missing the tension.
- 22:02Because what they try to do, and this is the director's fault,
- 22:05the whole concept of the film is we cut to Frank Grillo and Amy, his sidekick,
- 22:13as they're trying to get back to the house that he left his niece at.
- 22:20Yeah, so he's got to get a point A to point B. Simple enough, right?
- 22:23But what they do, as he's being attacked by wolves in the city,
- 22:26they're being attacked by the wolves in the house you cut back and forth cut back and forth,
- 22:31You're supposed to build tension that way. It does fall flat there.
- 22:35I would also add to that, a werewolf film that does this 300 times better and
- 22:42not to disrespect this film, I'm trying my best to give it praise.
- 22:46Is The Descent does that 3,000 more times better.
- 22:49And they're in the same cabin, but all you do is cut from one room to another, but it builds tension.
- 22:55You're like, fuck it, hell. They're only three feet apart, but you're still being built.
- 22:58The Descent does it really well. Neil Marshall. to do this better. Yeah, yep.
- 23:02But that's the director's fault.
- 23:05And that's why I'm not a big fan of Stephen Miller. And he does do a bad disservice,
- 23:10but by not giving us that test in between the scenes. I agree. However...
- 23:15The action and the blood and the gore, I'm going with it.
- 23:19And that's what I'm taking it with me. I'm taking it as a stupid creature feature
- 23:23and just having a good time with it.
- 23:24Well, what I would, to the lack
- 23:26of tension, is also the complete lack of personality of the characters.
- 23:31There is no real relatable or sympathetic characters, including the Frank Rillo
- 23:35character, although he's probably the best of the bunch.
- 23:38But you just can't relate in any way to these characters because they're one-dimensional.
- 23:43And so i did not for a single
- 23:46moment give a single shit about you know
- 23:49the sister-in-law and the niche
- 23:52at home in fact that was on the side of the werewolves but again
- 23:55the performances of by the most actresses are basically
- 23:58one-dimensional as well and like
- 24:01i said they're cardboard cutouts so i get that
- 24:04it's a werewolf creature feature but you
- 24:07want to have some sort of character that you can
- 24:10relate to and has a bit of personality we just
- 24:13don't get that here at all you know even
- 24:16the new diamond phillips character who's only in it briefly while i like lou
- 24:20diamond as was stated and he has an excellent presence he's basically just werewolf
- 24:25fodder essentially you know it's a glorified cameo but yeah the lack of tension
- 24:31is another thing and you know even the action sequences are
- 24:36a bit too rushed and they try and throw in like cool one liners you know like
- 24:40bite me you know later on but again it's all about the delivery and that boils down to the director,
- 24:47there's some good ideas here like I say but it's down to the overall delivery
- 24:53which falls flat and just becomes a bit boring there's no real charm there's
- 24:59a couple good shots I like where.
- 25:02Lucy wants to help Regan, and Regan ends up getting eaten.
- 25:10And what the wolves do is that they take her body, and she's still alive,
- 25:14and they throw her against the electric fence. Yeah.
- 25:17They try to get through this electric fence. Those kind of things I like.
- 25:20There's a scene at the supermarket where they see a young girl who's turned.
- 25:25And they don't know how to handle that because it's obviously a young girl.
- 25:28And so those now a scene
- 25:31like that would have played better in dawn of the dead i think does it it would
- 25:36be better because because it's ramera yes yes but they but they try they but
- 25:41they do try to do elements of that like putting children in in peril like what
- 25:47happens to the reagan character,
- 25:49because lucy can't open the door for her because that's one of the roles and
- 25:53so she ends up getting eaten and thrown into electric fans.
- 25:56I do. I think that's good stuff. I see that. I'm seeing more than what other people are seeing.
- 26:01They probably just don't care at this point, which is fine. To each their own.
- 26:05What I'm going to say to these scenes, because I do think these scenes are decent,
- 26:08and I do think they're warranted.
- 26:10I love the Gatlin gun scene, where you got these fucking commandos who are trying
- 26:17to kill everything that moves, and the wolves take them out,
- 26:22and then they have to fight the walls and they have,
- 26:24and there's a scene that's pretty terrible where Amy has to.
- 26:28What is it? Amy is going to, I'm going to, I'm going to be their decoy.
- 26:32Yeah, she, she ends up getting, and I'm going to grab a Gatlin gun.
- 26:35Well, I'm like, just kill her. Cause this is stupid. Who would,
- 26:37well, see that again, that, that street gang, that was another one of the ideas
- 26:42I liked, but again, it's not fully explored.
- 26:44They're not in it long enough, but don't really get to know those characters.
- 26:47So it was an idea that should have been explored more even have them as like,
- 26:53like main supporting characters or whatever here's another
- 26:56thing but see with a werewolf film or a
- 26:59zombie film or the like whenever a main
- 27:02character has to go through a change
- 27:05to turn into the monster there has to be a certain sympathy
- 27:08it has to be a certain tragic element to
- 27:11it but we don't i know to sort of try and do it
- 27:14with frank grillo whenever he turns but we just don't
- 27:17have that we're not emotionally and i know which werewolves but
- 27:20we're not emotionally invested in the character i mean
- 27:23you have it and dawn of the dead whenever people turn
- 27:26you know there's that certain sympathy jeff goldblum and
- 27:29the remake of the fly you know and america david and american warwolf in london
- 27:33there's that tragedy and that sympathy there's absolutely zero of it here yeah
- 27:37but you're not going to get that here i mean i said that the title alone it's
- 27:42a snakes on a plane but with wolves yeah it's it's not trying to reinvent the
- 27:46wheel they're not trying to be that.
- 27:48They're just trying to do dumb creature feature i guarantee that's all they
- 27:52wanted to make I think you're comparing apples to oranges.
- 27:55But anyways, yeah, I mean, with the character development or something like this.
- 28:04Yeah, there's not much to it. There's really nothing to it. Yeah.
- 28:09It's really about watching werewolves eat people. That's all it is.
- 28:12One of the big flaws I have, if you've got Alex Grillo and his team behind all
- 28:17this, if you're not going to build us character tension or give us a script.
- 28:23Exactly. A part of story. At least give us more gore.
- 28:30And even if it's just a lot more blood and carnage. We get a lot of carnage,
- 28:34but we don't see a lot of it.
- 28:36You got some really fun stuff like when he turns into a wolf,
- 28:39which there's copying 30 days of night at this point.
- 28:42But when they do that, there's a great scene where Cody's this badass werewolf.
- 28:48He's supposedly this badass as a human, but Frank Griller just rips his head
- 28:52off. That was a good scene.
- 28:54And then she, obviously she can't suit him because it's, you know, I can't suit you.
- 29:00I don't get it. So she takes the last bullet and she shoots a hole in the ceiling,
- 29:06which I like the idea, to show that the sun's out.
- 29:09Yes. And so he turns back at the last second.
- 29:12Yeah. But why is he had pants on all of a sudden? Yes. Yeah.
- 29:15Yeah. It's basically because essentially, because I was looking out for him. Was he Warren?
- 29:21Was he Warren? Oh, you were looking out for him? Oh, I see what you're saying.
- 29:23I was saying, was he really Warren jeans? Was he like the Incredible Hulk? You know?
- 29:28Warren jeans? you know whatever he like turns
- 29:31into a wolf but i'm talking about the 1970s incredible hulk by the way the tv
- 29:36show but yes i think because it would have been inappropriate in front of his
- 29:41niece to be standing there butt naked so far enough but yes it is an error but
- 29:46here it's the fucking least of this film's problems trust me,
- 29:50nah nah I disagree right well
- 29:53again it lacks charm it lacks basically everything apart
- 29:58from you know some good ideas like I say to be
- 30:00fair that aren't explored and the special
- 30:04effects the practical special effects are well done
- 30:07too but apart from that yeah well
- 30:11you have Lou Diamond Phillips as well so you know that's always a big thumbs
- 30:14up but apart from all of that yeah it's just
- 30:17it's a nothing burger you know
- 30:20it's bland and zero charm guys keep in mind this is the man who gave a pass
- 30:26to return to salem's lot and stop what my mom will shoot he literally says it
- 30:31on this podcast he likes shit he likes films that have no direction blah blah
- 30:35not a comic and all and artistic.
- 30:38He no there's no you do not like artistic merit you even said it if it's stupid and bad you like it.
- 30:44It puts a smile on my face. That's what you always say.
- 30:47But anyways, I'm going to go. I'm giving it a pass. No, I'm not giving it a
- 30:51major pass. I'm not a fucking idiot.
- 30:53Okay? Yes, you are. There's a lot better werewolf movies out there.
- 30:56I know what I'm going to see. I know what I'm paying to see.
- 31:00I'm paying to see Alec Gillis and his work. And he pays. And that's what I got.
- 31:04I didn't care about anything else. And I like Frank Grillo, no matter what.
- 31:08So, you give me those two things, I'm happy. It's got some very clever moments
- 31:12with the werewolves trying to get into the house and how they tear down the
- 31:16telephone pole or try to take off the electricity, throw in the dead body into the electric fence.
- 31:22De-electralize, whatever they do.
- 31:24I like the experimental scene. It's got a lot more going for it than the negative.
- 31:29If you're looking for a fucking plot or anything like that, then no, it's not your film.
- 31:35You can sit there and laugh all you want. You love this shit,
- 31:37but for some reason, you won't give this a pass.
- 31:40It makes no sense. Your logic in film, I'm so tired of you using that as a scapegoat.
- 31:45So let me, guys, it is what it is. It's creature feature.
- 31:51It's not going to hold up to the candle to the window, the movies we have mentioned.
- 31:54Of course not. It's not trying to do that.
- 31:57But we're tired of the fucking CGI world we live in, where everything's fucking green screen.
- 32:03This is big guys in suits running after people.
- 32:07I don't like the director. Yeah, it shows here. The tension's not there. I understand that.
- 32:12I'm not saying it's an Oscar winner by any means.
- 32:15But come on don't we miss people in
- 32:18will of costumes eating people so come on
- 32:21it's an hour and a half fucking Saturday matinee
- 32:24turn it on the TV and you then
- 32:27rewatch it what I just said and then you go okay maybe it's not the train wreck
- 32:31it's not great but it's not the train wreck people saying it is I certainly
- 32:36don't hate this filming why would it I just came away from it with nothing so
- 32:42if it works for you good on you and, yeah, each to their own.
- 32:46But I just came away with it with nothing, really.
- 32:49But, well, apart from Lou Diamond Phillips, of course. But there you go.
- 32:53We know how you feel about Lou. Oh, yeah.
- 32:57Oh, the bamba. Chavez! Chavez, man! You know? Young Guns.
- 33:05Oh, boy. I can't wait till Young Guns 3 comes out. You're going to be the first one in line.
- 33:11In my machine gun wheelchair. because it's taken that long to come out.
- 33:17It's so childish. It's so childish. So what?
- 33:21I'm a consummate professional. I'm right. You know, a consummate professional
- 33:26who accuses his charming co-host of wanking over films.
- 33:34Honor! It wasn't even private. You know what I mean?
- 33:40Yeah, so professional. But then again, professionalism is not an option.
- 33:44So, uh, I said, Frank, thanks, buddy.
- 33:50I know you comment a lot in our posts and stuff and we do appreciate your support.
- 33:54You've been there since day one. So we certainly don't mind doing this film
- 33:57for you. We know you're not a fan of it, but that's because you have no taste, just like Trevor.
- 34:02Well, all right, guys, we're going to wrap this one up. Thanks for joining us.
- 34:06Next up, we're going to do.
- 34:08Barbarian? Our boy. We're going to do Barbarian and weapons.
- 34:14Double feature for our new boy, Zach Krieger's. Zach Krieger's name is?
- 34:18Yeah, Zach Krieger. Krieger.
- 34:20And so look forward to those. And then we've got, like I said,
- 34:23Long Walk Home, Stephen King's.
- 34:26And then we got, we're trying to see what's going on with Frankenstein.
- 34:32This new one coming out, it's coming out November 13th. So we might get to it
- 34:37after snowing it. We can call it a Christmas movie.
- 34:40We don't know yet. But we're definitely going to end with Diozento Suspiria.
- 34:46But that's all we've got. Thanks again. Give us a shout at Citizenframe underscore
- 34:50podcast on Instagram and of course Facebook.
- 34:53That's all I've got. Anything you need to add? I'm a way to put on some moon
- 34:57screen. So apart from that, all good.
- 35:01Yeah, I bet you can put it on moon screen and then a little young guns at the same time. Sick fuck.
- 35:06I love young guns. I had young guns too. I bet you do. I can't wait for young
- 35:10guns three. I bet you can. Yeah.
- 35:15All right, we're out of here. Take care of yourselves.
