- 1:03is your questions, my answers, real Parkinson's Q&A, and I want
- 1:07to dive right in. I love this episode.
- 1:09We do this once a month. And these questions are taken
- 1:11right from the last four weeks since the last last time we did
- 1:14this in the right from the comments in YouTube and offer
- 1:18podcasts. So anyway, let's kick things off
- 1:20with a gem. And this is from Mary Kane 5668,
- 1:24who wrote You gave up bacon? Are you serious?
- 1:28Well, Mary, great question. And let me clear this up right
- 1:31away. I didn't actually give up bacon.
- 1:33If Parkinson's ever tries to take my bacon away, we're going
- 1:36to have a real fight on our hands.
- 1:37But here's the truth. All of us have that one thing
- 1:41that we don't want to give up, don't we?
- 1:43You know, for some it's bacon and for some it's coffee.
- 1:45For some it's chocolate or wine. Parkinson's is really is already
- 1:49stealing enough from us. So I'm a believer in holding on
- 1:53to those little joys that keep life delicious, like peanut
- 1:56M&M's. Moderation.
- 1:57Sure. Total sacrifice.
- 1:59Not if I can help it. Hey, how about this in the
- 2:02comments? What's one thing that you would
- 2:06never give up? Never.
- 2:08OK, here's a bright season for that one with Parkinson's.
- 2:11If you have to choose between joy and perfection, choose joy.
- 2:14Perfection won't keep you warm at night, but joy just might.
- 2:18OK, great question. Moving on.
- 2:20This one comes from Jimmy Guyton.
- 2:23Jimmy Guyton, 7882. And he asked this, what is the
- 2:27worst stiffness that you've had? Your leg, you had in your legs
- 2:30and your feet. OK, well, thanks for this one,
- 2:33Jimmy. Well, see, stiffness is my
- 2:35biggest symptom, so I feel you on this one.
- 2:38The worst I've had, honestly, it was one night.
- 2:41I think I woke up about two or 3:00 in the morning and it felt
- 2:43like my calves were made of concrete.
- 2:45I remember I swung my legs out of bed and they just didn't
- 2:48move. And here's the funny part, I
- 2:50actually tried negotiating with them.
- 2:52I'm sitting there in the dark whispering come on guys, just 10
- 2:55steps to the bathroom. It didn't work.
- 2:58But here's one that does help me.
- 2:59Stretching before bed, a warm shower and some magnesium spray
- 3:03on the legs. That combo at least makes me
- 3:06feel like I'm have a fighting chance.
- 3:08So that was an excellent question.
- 3:09Here's a racism with that one. With Parkinson's, sometimes you
- 3:12have to sweet talk your own legs just to get them on your side.
- 3:16Been there, done that. How about me in the comments, if
- 3:18that's been you, me in the comments.
- 3:21All right, moving right along. This next question comes from
- 3:24Susan M444 and she asked this. Do you ever feel like your meds
- 3:30wear off at the worst possible times, Susan?
- 3:35Absolutely. And I swear Parkinson's has a
- 3:38sense of humor about it. Right.
- 3:40My meds never went off when I'm just alone watching TV.
- 3:43No, no, no, no, no. They wait until I'm in a grocery
- 3:45store line or sitting in a meeting.
- 3:48I remember one time I was at a birthday party, and just as
- 3:51everybody was singing, like, just like, you know, happy
- 3:53birthday, my body froze up like a statue.
- 3:55You know, there I was looking like this wax figure while
- 3:58people are all belting out happy birthday.
- 4:00But what helps me is keeping a rescue dose handy and always
- 4:04being honest with people. Rescue dose of what you ask?
- 4:07Well, of my levodopa and my pills.
- 4:09So I always have some in almost every pocket just in case.
- 4:13And you know, and again, being honest with people, sometimes
- 4:15I'll say, hey, meds were meds just wore off.
- 4:17Give me a second. And guess what?
- 4:19Those people that matter, they'll understand that.
- 4:21Don't be afraid to speak up and tell people what's going on.
- 4:24I promise you they will surprise you.
- 4:27OK? I'm racism for that one.
- 4:29OK, Parkinson's has terrible timing, but you get to decide if
- 4:34it ruins the moment. Parkinson's has terrible timing,
- 4:38but you get to decide if it ruins the moment.
- 4:40All right, that was a really, really great question.
- 4:43And let's wrap up this first episode with one more.
- 4:46And this one is from Clive Adams 4538.
- 4:48And he asked this, do you ever get embarrassed by the facial
- 4:51masking? Well, Clive, I always love your
- 4:54questions in the comments and thank you for being so real
- 4:57about, about everything. But yes, truthfully, it's one of
- 5:02the hardest things for me, right?
- 5:05I, in Group photos, I look like I, I look back at these photos,
- 5:08right? And I see myself with like no
- 5:10expression. My mouth's half open and well,
- 5:12everybody else is smiling. I'm just sitting there and I'm
- 5:14just like that. And you know, I don't know, I
- 5:19talk to people about it and they say, I don't see it.
- 5:22You know, I'll say, you know, I'm looking at these pictures
- 5:23and oh, please don't take a picture.
- 5:25And you know, if you got any pictures, go back and look at
- 5:27them again, because I, I just don't like, you know, these
- 5:30group shots and, and they always tell me they don't see it.
- 5:33And I don't know if that's true or not because I then I see it.
- 5:37Don't you like, if you, when you start getting that facial
- 5:39masking and you know, you know, how about in the comments, if
- 5:42you do you see it or do other people say they don't see it?
- 5:45I because I do. And it does bother me.
- 5:48It really absolutely bothers me. It's one of those things, I
- 5:50don't know if I'm vain, maybe I'm a little vain.
- 5:52Maybe I'm a little, you know, maybe some people are saying it
- 5:56really doesn't matter to them. And and that's great.
- 5:58I hope. I wish I felt that way and I
- 6:00don't. I know I see it and it bothers
- 6:03me and that's the bottom line. And, you know, it's tough
- 6:06sometimes. But here's the thing that I've
- 6:08learned. OK, so people who love you, they
- 6:11don't need your face to tell them how you feel.
- 6:13OK, so I'm almost kind of worrying like, what do people
- 6:15think? What are they thinking of?
- 6:17What do they feel that I'm thinking right now?
- 6:19But people that love you don't need your face to tell you how
- 6:22you feel. They already know it.
- 6:24And if I remind myself that even if Parkinson's takes away my
- 6:27smile, it can't take away my joy unless I let it, right?
- 6:33Parkinson's cannot take your joy unless you let it take your joy.
- 6:37And you have to change that mindset.
- 6:39And do I have a Parkinson's for that one?
- 6:42Well, guess what? I kind of do.
- 6:45And this is a tough one for me again.
- 6:47But this is after much contemplation.
- 6:49This is what I came up with with Parkinson's, sometimes your face
- 6:54forgets to smile, but that just means that your heart has to
- 6:59smile louder. I think that's a pretty good
- 7:03one. And I think that's a good place
- 7:05to pause, right? We've got, I've got way more
- 7:07questions. I mean, I had to pick the best
- 7:0910, but I've got way more real questions lined up for Part 2.
- 7:12That one really hit me actually. And so I appreciate that.
- 7:14But you know, I'm going to give you 1.
- 7:16There's there that included. There's one coming up in Part 2
- 7:18and it's going to come right up after this.
- 7:20So don't you know, keep hang on here.
- 7:23But it made me laugh out loud the first time I read it so
- 7:25much. So you don't want to miss that
- 7:27one. But before you go, if you've got
- 7:29a burning question about Parkinson's or about me, drop it
- 7:32in the comments. And who knows, it might show up
- 7:34on the next month's Q&A. But guess what?
- 7:36I want to thank you so much for watching.
- 7:38And don't forget to subscribe. And I'll see you in Part 2.
- 7:42And I think you can probably see it if Parkinson's or sorry,
- 7:45Parkinson's, if YouTube's doing its thing, I think you can
- 7:48probably see it right about here or here.
- 7:50One of these two. Just click there.
- 7:52Come on with me. Let's go to Part 2.
